MISSION & VISION
Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School is a Catholic educational community committed to providing a quality college-preparatory education for young women. In the tradition of the Sisters of Mercy and their foundress, Catherine McAuley, we prepare students to live in a complex, dynamic society by teaching them to think critically, communicate effectively, respond compassionately to the needs of their community and assume roles of Christian leadership.
In partnership with parents, we empower young women to acknowledge their giftedness and to make decisions with a well-developed moral conscience. We foster an appreciation of the diversity of the global community and a quest for knowledge and excellence as lifelong goals.
Dear McAuley Community,
At Mother McAuley, we are proud of the traditions and legacy that sustain us. Some traditions range back to our earliest days in 1846, when the Sisters of Mercy first committed to establishing an all-girls school with young women as the primary concern. I keep these words of Catherine McAuley on my desk as a daily reminder of their work, and the importance of carrying on their mission:
“The sisters and those who minister in their name shall be convinced that no work of charity can be more productive to the good of society, or more conducive to the happiness of the poor than the careful instruction of women, since whatever station they are destined to fill, their example and advice will always possess influence.”
Some traditions have developed throughout the years: Mercy Day celebration, McAuley’s Got Talent show, cart rides in celebration of student successes. And then there are traditions that might not be as visible, but which underlie everything we do at McAuley. Building champions is one of them.
The word “champions” might lead one to think about our powerhouse athletic program, and rightly so. Over the years, our student athletes have earned 50+ conference titles, 20 state championships, and two national championships, with unparalleled success throughout the state of Illinois and across the nation for decades. But this is just one way we build champions.
Looking at this year alone, our students have excelled across the board: winning awards in art, design, journalism, and music; advancing to state competitions for academics, athletics, and even for our boisterous student fan section; receiving
recognition through college scholarship offers; earning opportunities to participate in state-wide orchestras and theatre productions; and more!
These are wonderful accomplishments and moments we have celebrated! But at McAuley, a “champion” is not always tied to trophies or awards or big, shining, winning achievements. Our students, and in turn, our alumnae, are champions in the ways they present themselves, assume leadership roles, work to better their families and communities, support their friends and colleagues, and spread the Mercy values that were learned within our walls.
We are able to build champions because we proudly provide an environment where our young women can explore and discover their interests, and be supported in the pursuit of their dreams. With this in mind, we are continually investing in state-of-the-art technology, tools and updated spaces to promote student growth and learning.
Thank you for your part in building our champions and the champion spirit that runs through our hallways. We ask that you continue to support our efforts through prayer, cheering us on in all endeavors, and investing in our school to keep us mighty and strong for another 175+ years.
Catherine McAuley...pray for us. Our Lady of Mercy... pray for us. Mary, mother of God, pray for us.
Thank you to all for partnering with us!
In Mercy,
Carey Temple Harrington ‘86 President
FEATURE STORY
Field of Dreams TURF
by Maura Moran Vaughan ‘07
The beginning of each school year at Mother McAuley brings a fresh wave of newly minted freshmen. Bright-eyed, possibly a bit nervous, but excited - these young women are just beginning a journey of self-discovery, with endless possibilities ahead due to McAuley’s commitment to provide state-of-the-art, equitable facilities, opportunities, and funding for all students.
The installation of the new turf field in the summer of 2022 is the latest example of this commitment. With the new field, our student athletes and student body have access to a safe, well-maintained, professional space, which had previously only been seen in all boys or co-ed schools. While we are celebrating 50 years of Title IX, equity in attention and facilities for women still have a long way to go. But as usual, McAuley is at the forefront of providing these essential opportunities to the young women of Chicagoland. Our soccer, lacrosse and softball teams can stay on campus for practice and competition, and receive the support and community that only our storied MacNation fans can provide.
When asked how she feels about the new field, head varsity soccer coach, Jenna Johnson Ryan ‘05, shared, “Excited, proud, optimistic. I think having a turf field on our own all girl school campus speaks volumes about the support and respect Mother McAuley has for their athletes.”
The field also elevates the level of competition that can be played by the student athletes who utilize it. “We have a home field the team is proud of!” Jenna exclaimed. “It takes us to the next level. Being able to train and play games on such a high quality field brings a certain confidence to the team and the program.”
Assistant varsity coach and McAuley physical education teacher, Megan McCauley ‘12, agrees. “We never play games on grass,” she explains. “The pace of play is much different from grass to turf.” With the new field, the players have been given a chance to learn, grow, and build skills that will benefit them come game day.
Emily Grzyb ‘23, varsity soccer player, jokes, “The new turf field has taught us to be very grateful that we no longer have to worry about rolling an ankle in the grass divots,” referring to the uneven ground in the grass field on which they had previously practiced. “On a serious note, I think it has made our team want to work harder to be successful and give the field a great start to its next years full of memories and triumphs.”
The field has also been in use throughout the fall and spring seasons providing an outdoor space for PE classes, pep rallies, our Senior Olympics, and a powder puff tournament, with more events to come.
Help us provide an even better experience for our students as we furnish the new field with lights, a scoreboard, and moreDONATE TODAY!
Building Champions On and Off the Field
We know that the education of a McAuley student does not stop when she leaves the classroom. All of our student athletes learn the lifelong lessons of teamwork, leadership and resilience that both complement and reinforce their well-rounded academic experience. Another tenet of a McAuley education is service, and for the last few years, this has been an important focus for the soccer team.
“We started giving back as part of the BodyArmor Tournament,” shared Coach McCauley. “My favorite was winning the showdown for charity as part of the BodyArmor series, and then donating a check to Ronald McDonald House Charities with the team.”
“But honestly over the years the girls have decided to volunteer on their own,” she continues. “For example, this year they chose to volunteer for the Special Olympics on a Saturday that we originally planned to be off. They organized and planned everything on their own. We even caught ourselves holding back tears after reading an email that was sent to us from the coordinator expressing how they have had plenty of volunteers throughout the year and this group especially stood out to them.”
“When we look back on a season, not every game stands out, but an email from the director of Special Olympics recognizing how special of a group our team is, is unforgettable,” remembers Coach Ryan. “We are fortunate to give back to those who need it and I am proud the girls recognize that and take advantage of every opportunity to do so.”
These service projects have had a positive impact on the players. “This year’s service project stood out to me because we were able to volunteer with the Special Olympics,” Emily Gryzb ‘23 says. “Being able to interact with these adults was such an extraordinary experience because the love and generosity that each of the individuals displayed was so inspiring. I went into this volunteering thinking I was going to be helping others, but these individuals truly were the ones who helped me realize that community and kindness make the world a better place. These projects inspire me to be the best I possibly can and always know that I can make a difference no matter how small.”

Ted Lasso follows a fun-loving American football coach who is inexplicably chosen to head a struggling English Premier League football team. In December 2022, the 50th reunion of the Class of 1970 was finally in full swing. After multiple rescheduled dates over the intervening two years due to COVID-19, attendees were even more thrilled at the chance to reconnect with their classmates and celebrate such a big milestone together.
As the night wore on, the women shared stories about their lives: their careers, their families, their travels; they reminisced about their time at Mother McAuley, laughing at fond memories and shared experiences; and inevitably, talked about their current interests: favorite hobbies, books, movies… and TV shows.
At the mention of one show, sisters Gina Reynolds ‘70 and Sheila Reynolds Trainor ‘70, and Loretta Wendt Jolivette ‘70 found out they have something unique in common - their nephews are both stars and creators of the popular Apple TV+ show, Ted Lasso
Ted Lasso:
A Shared Background
Jason Sudeikis, who stars as the title character, Ted Lasso, and Brendan Hunt, who portrays Coach Beard, have strong ties to Chicago. They first met and became friends during their time at The Second City, and, despite Jason growing up in Kansas City, they both have close family in Chicago - many of whom are Mother McAuley alumnae.
Jason and Brendan were both raised by McAuley women - their mothers, Kathy Wendt Sudeikis ‘64 and Martha Reynolds Thomas ‘70, respectively.
Kathy - whose sisters, Loretta Wendt Jolivette ‘70, Marti Wendt Doherty ‘71 and Nancy Wendt Healy ‘72, all attended Mother McAuley - has been a leader in the world’s travel industry

for more than 45 years. Today, she is the Vice President of Corporate Relations for Acendas, a $200 million travel company in suburban Kansas City. In 2017, she was inducted into the McAuley Hall of Honor.

Martha is a triplet with Gina Reynolds ‘70 and Sheila Reynolds Trainor ‘70. Her sisters Tracy Reynolds Aleksy ‘68 and Molly Reynolds ‘72 graduated from McAuley, as well, due in large part to their mother, Sheila Taaffe Reynolds SXA ‘39 Sheila attended McAuley’s predecessor, Saint Xavier Academy, from first grade through college, and was inducted into the McAuley Hall of Honor in 2013.

Sadly, Martha passed away in 2016, but we had the chance to sit down with Kathy and Gina to talk about their lives and the serendipitous connection between their two families.
“The family we’re born with, and the family we make along the way”
(Kelly et al., 2021)
Connection is at the very heart of human nature, and Ted Lasso manages to beautifully illustrate how people flourish and
become the best versions of themselves through authentic relationships.
For the writers and producers of the show, this began at an early age with the family they were born into. Throughout the course of our conversation, Gina and Kathy shared many insights into their large families and the strong bond that connects them to this day. Their anecdotes tell stories not without strife, but full of humor and love.
And then, there’s the family we make along the way. “They have chosen each other, and their loyalty to each other is incredible,” Kathy shares about Jason, Brendan, and the third creator of the show, Joe Kelly. “My brother, George (who is best known for playing Norm in the show, Cheers), told Jason to ‘pick the people that know you best, and work with them.’ And at Second City, it’s all about trust. Improv in general is always ‘and,’ not ‘but,’ and you invite the other person in. So you trust that person completely. And when they go to a TV series or they go to another opportunity, they’re constantly saying, ‘I’ve got people who could play that role. I’ve got somebody who can write.’”
And that’s what they did. The character of Ted Lasso was first introduced in 2013 during a series of commercials for NBC Sports to promote the English Premier League in the U.S. Jason had pulled in his friends Brendan and Joe to create the concept for the commercial, and the three were inspired to put together a story and a script based off the character. The rest is history.

This idea of trusting other people, supporting and advocating for other people, is an essential underlying theme of the show. It’s one reason the show has been so successful - this beautiful example of connection resonates with people across generations. Learning how this message was influenced by their personal lives makes the show that much more compelling.

Everything has an Intention
Given how the idea of “connection” transfers seamlessly from real life to the world of Ted Lasso, it’s no surprise to learn that the series is full of nods to the creators’ families, their friends, and moments in their personal lives.
Some are small Easter eggs - in season 2, episode 5, an autographed photo of Jason’s uncle, George Wendt, can be seen hanging on the wall of a restaurant, next to an autographed photo of Roy Kent, one of the fictional football players - while others are larger tributes.
Many of the players’ names recognize friends and family, including a player in season one, Martin De Maat, who is named after Brendan and Jason’s teacher and the artistic director of The Second City during their time there. The team travels to Amsterdam in season three, an episode which pays homage to their time working at one of the city’s comedy clubs, Boom Chicago. Gina also shared that Brendan’s son made an appearance in an episode, passing by Ted in a stroller.
Kathy shared one moment in particular that was significant for her. In season 2, episode 10, there’s a funeral and Jason’s character, Ted, arrives late. He chooses to sit in the last pew on the right side, which isn’t even worth noticing for most people. But the last pew on the right is where Kathy’s mom could be found every Sunday for Mass. The whole parish knew to expect her there, and when all of the family would be in from out of town for Christmas, they would all sit together in that back row. “That was such a nod to Nana and the south side,” Kathy said. “It’s little things, you either know the inside story, or not.”
When asked if they thought any of the characters were inspired by real people, both Gina and Kathy felt that, coming from such large families, it’s probably a combination of people and traits that would have played a part in the creation of the show’s characters. They could, though, pinpoint the inspiration for Ted’s mustache - a clear replica of the mustache his father sports. Coach Beard is always reading, a characteristic Gina shares is true to Brendan himself. Gina also shared stories of Brendan’s mother, Martha, who had a mischievous nature and was always good for a laugh. She would often pretend to be Gina when answering the phone - this playful humor has made its way onto the show.
Kathy also shared, “I would guess that having a strong female character as his adversary [in season one] is definitely reflective of a McAuley girl. As I said when I was blessed to get inducted
into McAuley Hall, we were the generation that talked back… I saluted the husbands for accepting us… It was unusual for the wife to have her own position and her own standing, and that of course is the tradition that the all-girls school creates for you.”
“It goes back to not needing a ‘yes man’ as your spouse, and letting the female strength show through,” she continues. “Cause you know, we’re caught between strength and being ‘bossy’ and ‘aggressive’ and all of that kind of stuff, so there’s a subtle touch to that. I think Hannah Wadingham [who plays Rebecca Welton] represents that type of a female pretty darn well.”
“Write what you know”
This advice from Mark Twain is often quoted, and perhaps for good reason. In the case of Ted Lasso, drawing inspiration from past experiences, incorporating so many salutes to the people and places who have gotten them to where they are, building off of the foundation that has made them, is what makes the show successful. It feels real and relatable.
In this issue of Inscape, there are stories and examples of how McAuley builds champions of athletics, of sportsmanship, of empathy, of self-determination, of giving back and showing up for others; many of the same themes found in Ted Lasso. The foundations that are built here give our students and alumnae the tools and skills to succeed no matter the situation - even if they find themselves coaching soccer in the English premier league with all odds against them.

They studied at a variety of schools to receive their PharmD degrees, including Midwestern University, Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine, Butler University, and University of Illinois-Chicago. They also work at a variety of places including Jewel Osco Drug, Kroger/Mariano’s Pharmacy, Jesse Brown Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Walgreens Boots Alliance, Centerwell Specialty Pharmacy, and Meijer Pharmacy. Maggie shared, “I was drawn to pharmacy at an early age, as I watched my older sister become a pharmacist, and I observed the impact that pharmacists have within our healthcare system. I chose pharmacy because I felt called to a profession where I could make an impact each day by helping patients while still maintaining a healthy work-life balance to build my own family. As I look ahead to the future, I’m excited about our profession and its evolution as innovations in technology, healthcare, pharmaceutical drugs, and vaccinations continue to occur.”
Hispanic Heritage Month
During Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 - October 15), members of the Latinas Lead Club partnered with the Alumnae Department to conduct interviews of our Latina Mighty Macs. These women are champions in their careers, and shared their insights with our McAuley community.

ALUMNAE NOTES
A Full Circle Moment
by Maura Moran Vaughan ‘07
The water polo team won second in state this year, marking the program’s 14th state appearance since the team was first formed during the 2001-2002 school year. With three first place finishes and, now, three runner up finishes, the water polo program has been an impressive force through the years.
In 2021, McAuley welcomed Maggie Wood Bax ‘07 as the head water polo coach. A four-year starter on the Mighty Mac team, Maggie competed at the state tournament every year, ending her career as a Mac with both the state championship title and Player of the Year recognition.
Maggie then played water polo at Iona College (now University) in New York, where she was a four-year Division 1 starter. In 2011, her senior year, she became Iona's first 100 goal scorer and led the nation with 119 goals, helping Iona secure the MAAC Championship and its first NCAA Championship berth that season. She was the first Iona player to eclipse 100 goals in a season and first to eclipse 300 in a career.
Now, as coach, Maggie has had the opportunity to encourage and train a new generation of water polo players. Her hard work and dedication have paid off - not only has her team won second in state this year, Maggie was recognized as Illinois Water Polo Coach of the Year, MCAC Conference Coach of the Year and the Lyons Sectional Coach of the Year.
When asked how she feels about these accomplishments, she says, “Besides incredible, I think the first word that comes to my mind is proud. I am so proud of the commitment this team put in during the season. The effort with which they put in to improve and to get better makes me so incredibly proud.”
As for her coaching awards, she continues, “It is not something I went into conference, sectionals or state thinking about. My main focus was the team and how we could be the best team we were capable of being every game. And although my name is on the award, it truly takes a village to get where we did. I am so grateful for my assistant coaches Tammy Stelnicki, Mary Kate Duffy ‘14 and Katie Kopale ‘09. The strategy of each practice, the constant back and forth communication every day, the brainstorming drills and plays show how much we all truly cared about this team.”
Maggie has always loved coaching because she knows the positive impact she can have on an athlete. On a more personal note, she
Bella Morquecho ‘23 was named the MCAC Senior Player of the Year this year, and will be heading to Iona University to continue her water polo careerjust like Coach Bax!
shares, “When our daughter Charlotte Bax passed away in 2021 after losing her battle with Congenital Heart Defect, I told my husband I wanted to find a job that made me truly happy because Charlotte made us realize there is so much more to life. I googled water polo coaching positions and saw McAuley's Head Coaching position was open.”
Since becoming coach, Maggie and her husband, Tim, have welcomed their second child, Cormac (or Mac, for short). Their angel baby, Charlee, and Mac are notable mascots and inspirations for Maggie, her fellow coaches, and the team.
“There is no other feeling quite like helping the girls of McAuley water polo develop their passion, dedication, work ethic and respect for others, not only in the pool but also in life,” she continues. “There are so many things I try to instill in the girls… if I really have to pick one I would say sportsmanship. Because good sportsmanship teaches the girls to be gracious and respectful towards others.”
With Maggie at the helm, it is clear the athletes are learning how to become champions - both as water polo players and as people.

Sister Mary Brian Costello, RSM
The Mother McAuley community is deeply saddened to share that Sister Mary Brian Costello, RSM passed away peacefully on May 22, 2023 at Mercy Circle.
Sister Brian spent more than 80 years as a Sister of Mercy serving in a variety of educational ministries. In all of these settings her primary focus was preparing young women for lives as competent Christian leaders in a rapidly evolving world, making them “Future Ready”.
Sister Brian arrived at Mother McAuley in 1959 and served in many roles, including English teacher, Curriculum Director, and Principal (1970-73). She also served as the Director of the Big Shoulders Campaign for the Archdiocese of Chicago and Chief of Staff and Superintendent of Schools in the Chicago Archdiocese (1984-1991).
Sister Brian was named the Executive Director of Mother McAuley for the 1970-71 school year, and was renamed principal during 1972-73. During these years, Sister Brian sought innovative ways to integrate the liberal arts and critical analysis skills into all areas of the curriculum. As Sister Brian observed, “The Liberal Arts of learning and communication are particularly effective in developing a woman’s way of learning.” In addition to innovative content, Sister Brian recognized the possibilities of emerging technologies and opened a television studio to allow master teachers to reach into each classroom. She also introduced advanced placement classes allowing students to test out of some college level courses.
“Brian was passionate about the importance of excellent education for young women. From her early years at McAuley, she was innovative in creating a liberal arts curriculum and adopting new teaching methods that today are the norm. Her leadership was extended to the many schools in the Chicago Archdiocese as Superintendent of Schools. Her contributions were recognized locally and nationally with many honors, but she was most alive working to find ways to assist and encourage those who were most in need of opportunity.”
- SISTER TERRY MALTBY, RSM
From 1973 to 1979, Sister Brian served on the leadership team of the Sisters of Mercy, Chicago Province where she had responsibility for the Sisters’ apostolic works and planning for the future of the Sisters of Mercy education and other ministries.
In 1979, Sister Brian joined the Planning Team at the Archdiocese of Chicago School Office. Then in 1983, Cardinal Joseph Bernardin named her the first woman and non-cleric Superintendent of Schools for the Archdiocese with oversight responsibility for three hundred seventy-five schools. The plan also led to the creation of The Big Shoulders Fund to assist center city schools. Sister assisted Cardinal Bernardin in establishing the Fund and served on the Fund’s executive committee.
In 1987, she was awarded the first Catherine McAuley Leadership Award
at the annual Celebration Gala. This award is one of Mother McAuley’s highest honors, recognizing individuals who have demonstrated a deep level of commitment, loyalty, and service to the school.
In 1989, Cardinal Joseph Bernardin named Sister Brian Chief of Staff, a position she held until his death in 1996, and for an additional year under Cardinal George. In this role, she coordinated and directed the activities of the Cardinal’s office, including his national and international activities and communications. She was also on the Cardinal’s senior administrative team.
In 1993, she was awarded the Harold W. McGraw Jr. Prize in Education for her outstanding work to support education in the city’s poorest and most vulnerable communities. Her work included establishing summer learning centers for economically disadvantaged children and developing innovative learning programs for preschoolers, including children with learning disabilities or children in need.
Sister Mary Brian formally retired in 1997, but remained active on many boards and committees.
She was inducted into the first McAuley Hall of Honor in 2013, a prestigious honor bestowed upon a member of the McAuley community whose story reinforces the belief that McAuley’s influence provides the foundation to achieve extraordinary things.
McAuley continues to honor her legacy by bestowing the prestigious Sister Brian Costello Award to a senior each year. The recipient of this scholarship has the honor of speaking to her classmates and their families at the Baccalaureate Mass.
In the summer of 2022, McAuley named the Sister Brian Costello, RSM Learning Resource Center in dedication to our former principal.
Sister Brian received her B.A. from Saint Xavier University, her M.A. from the University of Notre Dame and did post graduate work at Loyola University, Northwestern University, and the University of Massachusetts. She received Honorary Doctorates from Saint Xavier University, Felician College, Loyola University, and Holy Cross College.
Sister Brian will be forever a part of McAuley, in our hearts and in our minds.
“McAuley is very much a part of the life of the Sisters of Mercy. I’m a Sister of Mercy; it’s my identity. Once you’re in a school, become part of it and believe in what it’s doing, you stay with it. You don’t leave.”
- SISTER BRIAN

Alumnae Champion New Scholarship Opportunities
Thanks to the generous support of several McAuley alumnae, whose investment affords us the opportunity to provide young women the lifetime advantage of a McAuley education. We are so grateful for all of the opportunities given from hearts leading with love, kindness, and mercy.
THE FRIENDSHIP MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP was established by a group of amazing friends, in loving memory of Patricia Dalton Dart ‘82 and Barbara Cherry Marzano ‘83, best friends who battled cancer yet remained supportive, kind, and loving to all. The scholarship will provide an annual award of $1,000 for students whose families are battling cancer and entering their freshman year of Mother McAuley High School. The first recipient was awarded this spring.
DENISE
SULLIVAN HUGUELET ‘72
SPIRIT
OF SERVICE SCHOLARSHIP is in memory of Denise Sullivan Huguelet ‘72, a special education teacher for more than 30 years, a mother to five, grandmother to eleven, and friend to all that met her. Her son Mike shared, “We traditionally think of accomplishments as titles and awards and bank account amounts...She didn’t look at accomplishments as, ‘I want to obtain this position’ or ‘I need to get this thing to validate my skill set.’ She just served. I think the accomplishments that I’m proud of her for and that she’d
be most proud of are the individual student successes...Those were the accomplishments that she would be proud of. In the small moments, she could make somebody feel better and do something that they didn’t think they could do.” This $1,000 non-renewable scholarship was awarded to one member of the incoming class.
BE THE VISION SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to aid graduating seniors pursuing a higher degree at a 2-4 year college/university. Scholarships were presented to Bridget Sullivan ‘23 (Iowa State University) by Alumna Shavonne Ford Stupart ‘96 and family, Caitlin McDonagh ‘23 (St. Ambrose University) by the Satkas Family, and Ndeye Kambe ‘23 (University of Missouri) by the McFadden Family.
Nikki Jennings ‘88 SENIOR FEE AWARDS were granted to 15 graduating seniors who needed aid with their senior fees including prom, graduation, Kairos, AP testing and courses, and dual credit courses fees. Nikki flew in to share breakfast with this group of students in person to share her story and the importance of paying it forward to the next generation.
Incoming Freshman Scholarship Night
On May 21, we held our Incoming Freshman Scholarship Night. We are filled with pride to announce that $694,000 in meritbased scholarships were awarded to the Class of 2027. Many of these scholarship are renewable, and will continue to support students throughout their four years at Mother McAuley. Congratulations to all the recipients. We are so excited for you to join our McAuley family.
As she was deciding where to attend high school, incoming freshman student Catherine Hedderman ‘27 did her research, including a lengthy conversation with her Great Aunt Kay (Kathryn) Neary McKeough ‘57, a member of Mother McAuley’s first graduating class. This discussion confirmed Catherine’s decision; shortly thereafter, her Great Aunt Kay excitedly and proudly received her acceptance news. The next step was to apply for the TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE SCHOLARSHIP awarded to legacy students. Catherine received the scholarship, but unfortunately, was unable to share that good news with her great aunt, the one relative with whom she would share this common bond. Kathryn Neary McKeough passed away unexpectedly on May 2, 2023, just three weeks prior to the Class of 2027 Scholarship and Awards Ceremony. Along with Catherine’s parents, her Aunt Kathy McKeough Murphy, Kay’s daughter, attended the ceremony and presented Catherine with her mother’s McAuley Class ring from 1957. The McAuley Ring symbolizes a community that bonds you with a sisterhood filled with traditions, a McAuley spirit, and a heart of mercy and compassion that is our shared legacy.
Mercy Day of Giving 2022
On September 23-24, we raised $119,352 from 665 donors for Mercy Day of Giving 2022. Thank you to our donors, alumnae, ambassadors, faculty and staff, students, parents (past and current), and friends, who participated in Mercy Day of Giving. We are beyond grateful and blessed to have such a wonderful, supportive community.
We knew we could count on our McAuley family to not only reach but surpass our goals of raising $100,000 from more than 500 donors during our Mercy Day of Giving. Thank you to all of you who believe in our mission, vision, and desire to continue providing this transformational education to young women.
During the annual in-school Mercy Day celebration, Ciara Hosty ‘23 and Jen Novosel Callahan ‘02, teacher and Director of Student Activities, were honored with this year’s CATHERINE McAULEY AWARD! We are so grateful to both of them for embodying Catherine’s spirit and living out her legacy of service, compassion, and hospitality. This celebration kickstarted the 2022 Mercy Day of Giving by reminding us of our shared roots in gratitude to our foundress Catherine McAuley.

Planting the Seed - The Class of 1973 Legacy Gift honoring their 50th Reunion
Excitement abounds as the Class of 1973 plans their 50th Reunion for Friday, October 13, 2023. The committee’s work began months ago as they set their goals: locating and communicating with all classmates, planning the mass and celebration, and most importantly, leaving their mark with a legacy gift to the school. Their mission is to carry on the teachings of Catherine McAuley; educated women are an asset first to themselves, then to society. With this in mind, the Class of 1973 is launching a Class Appeal to raise $50,000 to help fund the restructuring of McAuley’s award-winning STEM program into a STEAM program, ensuring the liberal arts will always have a prominent place in a McAuley education. Reunions offer much more than a great night or the opportunity to support future Mighty Macs; connections and friendships, both old and new, are sparked. We commend the Class of 1973 for setting their goals high to ensure a great future for all Mighty Macs to succeed.

WHY PLAN?
Planned Giving allows donors to have a greater financial impact on organizations in which they believe! Despite this fact, fewer than 10 percent of Americans utilize planned giving. Yet, there is a wide range of options for potential gift givers, making it much easier to fit philanthropy into their budgets and long-term plans. Planned giving offers flexibility for donors from a broad range of financial backgrounds.
SCHOOL NEWS
Dear McAuley Community, FROM THE PRINCIPAL
What a joy this past year has been as I stepped into the role of Principal at Mother McAuley. I have had the opportunity to work alongside a team who is dedicated to continuing the mission and vision of Catherine McAuley and the Sisters of Mercy, and have been inspired by the creativity and drive of our students, our faculty and staff, and the wider McAuley community.
There have been many notable moments and accomplishments this year that reflect the idea that McAuley builds champions, which you can read about in the following pages. These outcomes are impressive, and I would like to take a moment to recognize all of the ways in which our students are set up for success - because champions are built over time, with practice and with a strong support system. This system includes their peers, and the many faculty and staff members who help guide them along the way.
Thank you to our faculty, who not only bring boundless energy and enthusiasm to the classroom, but devote their free time to helping students succeed and continually show up for them as advocates and cheerleaders both in and out of the classroom.
Thank you to our coaches, who not only hone our student athletes’ skills, but teach them the importance of sportsmanship and the power of teamwork.
Thank you to our club and organization moderators, who provide leadership and learning opportunities to our students, and who spend countless hours planning for and providing students with events, activities, valuable meetings and experiences, and time for our students to foster connections and friendships with their peers.
Thank you to the entire McAuley community for showing our students that they are valued.
I am thrilled, too, about the programs and services we have been able to enhance over the past year, and that
we are working on over the summer of 2023, that offer students a supportive and welcoming environment:
• In 2022, we modernized our Learning Resource Center and renamed the space the Sr. Brian Costello Center, in honor of Sr. Mary Brian Costello, RSM. This center is now fully handicapped accessible, more convenient for individualized instruction for students with learning obstacles, and provides a comfortable, updated learning space for our students.
• The counseling department works diligently to provide support, services and events for students and their families, including resource assistance and college and career planning. 100% of the Class of 2023 was accepted to a college or university and collectively awarded $90.1 million in college scholarships.
• This summer, two STEAM labs in the Science department are being renovated to provide advanced technology and functionality for our students.
• Our Math Lab space, along with the Media Center, will be enhanced.
WIth these supports in place, and our ongoing commitment to providing an unparalleled educational experience to the young women of Chicagoland, I know we will continue to build champions for years to come!
Thank you for welcoming me into the McAuley family. I look forward to all of the excitement to come in the 2023-24 school year!
Fondly,
Kathryn M. Baal, PhD Principal
