MANGO have unveiled their first line of tech accessories, ranging from earbuds to a wireless charger, power bank, and bluetooth speaker, amongst others. The item I love the most is their sleek thermal bottle, since I’m making a conscious effort to cut back on single-use plastic. Besides, my car will look a whole lot cleaner without the pile of plastic bottles on the floor. Dhs129

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN JANUARY? Everything to look forward to in the city

anuary! Talk about coming down from the magic of Christmas and New Year with a huge thud. Luckily, this is Dubai and there’s always something mega to distract from the end of the festivities. Oh, and the weather is still sweet which makes all the difference. This month it’s all about getting the kids settled back into school and getting into that routine again. The Dubai Shopping Festival is also here from December 26th to February 1st 2020 which means mega deals. Retail therapy is always a winner. But if you think the DSF is just about shopping then think again. Dubai Tourism are a bit more ambitious than that. There are music concerts, firework shows, roaming family entertainment across the city, raffles, daily prize giveaways and markets. If that’s not enough to light up the New Year for a month, I don’t know what is. It’s also a New Year. It’s 2020! New Year - New You so it’s time to act on those New Year’s resolutions. For me it’s some additional work ambitions and trying to squeeze some exercise in somewhere - another thing I need to get into a routine with. Speaking of 2020, I can’t wait to hear about what the Dubai EXPO 2020 has in store for us and I’m sure more announcements will be made this month too. The pavilions and activities look out of this world, all aimed at various demographics including families, students, couples, business travelers and loads more. Activity-wise, I’m most excited about continuing beach life and al fresco dining. Pretty much enjoying the outdoors as much as possible as the summer always comes around sooner than we think.

WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU’RE EXPECTING About to become a mother for the first time? Here’s an honest month-by-month experience from a gorgeous mum-to-be
Bilna Sandeep Civil Engineer, and a Career and Biz Coach
APRIL We shifted to a new apartment in Dubai and were busy setting up our new home. But towards the end of the month, I started seeing a decline in my enthusiasm. I was constantly too tired. One day while driving back home, I couldn’t breathe properly and felt my trousers had become too tight. I thought, maybe it’s time to take a test. I did and all we could see was a faint line. We decided to go to the doctor, and it was confirmed by evening that I was pregnant. We couldn’t really believe we
were going to be having our second baby.
MAY While I did not have much morning sickness, I was always tired and moody. Being a fulltime working mom, I found it very difficult to cope up. After dropping my elder son to the school bus drop off point, I would sometimes head home and fall asleep. I am a social media person, but I wasn’t really active on Instagram those days. I just didn’t have anything positive to say.

P A R E N T I N G
JUNE Oh boy! This month was tough. The summer heat was killing me and being a Civil Engineer, I had to visit various site offices. Though I took a break from the site walks due to safety issues, I still had to go around attending meetings.
JULY This month was equally hot, but my workload was getting better. Also, my mood swings were going away. I kept hydrated - fresh coconut water was my go-to drink! I also carried around little packets of laban, as it gave me energy. Because I had Gestational Diabetes during my first pregnancy, I was told to keep food intake under control. I found myself so hungry after work, that I would gobble up anything and everything.
AUGUST I had gained 12 kgs by this month. At my fifth month scan, we opted not to find out the baby’s gender, like we did during the first pregnancy. This was also the time for my sugar test. The GTT results came out and I had Gestational diabetes (GD) as expected. The doctor asked me to consult a dietician.
SEPTEMBER I was placed on medication along with insulin shots and a strict diet. I was so scared to prick myself and I had to take insulin shots four times a day. My hands would shiver every time I pricked myself. It’s kind of surprising how our mind and body works together. We learn, adjust and get used to any sort of pains for our precious little ones. So did my body. I now prick myself and its become a part of my life. In between I also got a Urinary Tract Infection
(UTI). My water intake, while I went on vacation, was apparently too low. Though I am a selfcare advocate, I always forget to take care of myself when I go home.
OCTOBER I was asked to increase my insulin dosage every few days to keep my sugar levels under control. Ever since I started on insulin, my weight gain became stable. In fact, I did not gain any weight until the 37th week. By the end of the month, I got busy with my nesting phase. Being a second time mom, I was also being careful to make sure I did not buy anything that was not required. I bought only the absolute minimum items that would be necessary and suitable to our life.
16 | JANUARY 2020 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
NOVEMBER This month went by being busy with baby shopping. I also felt much energetic and went ahead and started planning my business that I plan to launch soon. I was also surprised at my burst of energy in creating a new YouTube channel for young and ambitious women covering topics related to career and small businesses.
DECEMBER Though my due date is 1st Jan 2020, I was told I will have to be induced two weeks earlier due to my GD. Excited, anxious, scared! I am having a mix of all sort of emotions as I write this.
A NURTURING HOME Mariam Ahmed, Owner of Pets in the City, discusses her role as a mum, entrepreneur and pet-owner
P
akistani-Canadian Mariam Ahmed was raised in Saudi Arabia, moved to Cyprus for a higher education, and lived in Canada for ten years before relocating to Dubai. “I yearned to return to the Middle East as have always considered it ‘home’. I decided to move to Dubai 16 years ago, as around that time Dubai was coming up really fast, and the best part is it still continues to grow, beautifully,” the mum of a little girl Aira tells me. Her current role entails heading, nurturing and growing her pet grooming business, Pets in the City. “I decided to leave the corporate world behind few months after my daughter was born. I’ve always been a workaholic with self-imposed tight work regimes. I felt very guilty when I couldn’t deliver the same standards to either of my roles, as a mother or in the corporate world. That’s when I decided to focus solely on her,” says Mariam. That decision, however, didn’t last very long as shortly after leaving her job, her current pet business started to materialize. Mariams admits that working for herself has its perks though. She can work from home at odd hours, take her baby along to supplier meetings, and so on. “It wasn’t long before my signature became known as the ‘mom-preneur’; someone who attends meetings, trade shows, baby in tow!” she laughs and says.

Mariam’s daily routine begins before dawn salah, which is followed by the school rush and drop-off, breakfast meeting and planning with her husband - also her business partner – and the day’s agenda that comes to a halt by 5 or 6pm. “I’ve groomed my daughter, since birth, to realize that anywhere can be considered a ‘play zone’ and that the park can even be an office, if I bring the laptop along!” Mariam says working with her daughter and doing almost everything by herseslf, without a nanny, has helped her understand her daughter better, as they grow and bond together. “I feel these young years will pass by incredibly fast, so I really want to enjoy her to the max, by keeping her with me as much as possible.” As for bonding with her pet cat, Maa named by Aira - Mariam explains she grew up in Jeddah, and the whole neighborhood’s cats were ‘hers’. “I’d crawl under parked cars or even pull them out of trash bins to rescue them, in my sense of the word! I’ve been a ‘fur-rent way before becoming a parent,” she tells me while cuddling her cat. Mariam wanted her daughter to have that similar sort of love, respect and comfort towards animals. So, on her first birthday, they introduced a cat to the family. “It was so natural for my daughter at that stage;
they don’t have any fear or inhibitions at this age, unless you’ve placed any of your own fears or beliefs into your children.” Gradually, Mariam’s family grew to include dwarf hamsters and budgies. And of course, all the strays she has rescued over the years.
I’ve groomed my daughter, since birth, to realize that anywhere can be considered a ‘play zone’
Apart from the best time to introduce a pet to the family, Mariam has a few tricks up her sleep when it comes to parenting. “A solution to many a tantrum, is food. Be wary and think of the following: has it been two hours since the last meal? Feed again. Did you put bit more salt or sugar in their meal? If they’re asking for candy, it’s feeding time again. I’ve seen a labeled ‘bad’ boy, a toddler; go from mean bully to calm and smiling just by giving him a sandwich.” I agree with the saying that life teaches and reteaches at various stages of our lives. What has worked for Mariam is to ‘un-learn’ and ‘re-learn’ to adjust and change with whatever life brings. Such a lovely motto to live by. “When I was in the corporate world I’d comply with the organization’s culture, to grow. I’ve applied the same practice when I had my daughter. Each day is a new learning, a new beginning for her, and a new lesson for me." Visit petsinthecity.me

COPING WITH BABY ECZEMA
If your baby has eczema, it automatically impacts the whole family. Their sensitive skin is red, itchy and irritated, making them uncomfortable and distressed, which is awful for any parent to witness.
And if they’re up scratching in the night and not getting all the sleep they need, chances are they’re more irritable during the day. And of course, if they’re sleeping less, you are too, which means you’re more tired than ever, all the while keeping an eye on them 24/7 to try and stop them scratching, while desperately trying to figure out how to make it go away. Although, it’s not easy, what’s important to know is that eczema is very common during infancy, with one in four babies experiencing it, so you are absolutely not alone. Plus, there are steps you can take to ease their discomfort.
HOW TO TREAT BABY ECZEMA
According to midwives, the below points could ease your baby’s eczema. • Try to reduce scratching as this can damage the skin and make eczema worse. Anti-scratch mittens may help, keep your baby’s nails short and clean and keep their skin covered with light clothing. • If certain fabrics irritate your baby’s skin, avoid them and stick to natural materials such as cotton. • Use emollients – moisturizing treatments applied directly to the skin. • Heat can aggravate eczema, so keep the rooms in your home cool, especially your baby's bedroom. • Avoid using soaps and opt for only the purest products for your baby’s skin. WaterWipes are accredited by the eczema association in the US and Allergy UK. • If you are ever worried about your baby’s skin, always consult your healthcare practitioner.

GIVING BIRTH IN DUBAI Paralympian, Author and Speaker Jessica Smith shares a real, raw experience of her pregnancy journey
MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | JANUARY 2020 | 23
H E A L T H
A
year ago, my family and I landed in Dubai ready for a new adventure and excited about starting our new life here as expats. My husband and I have two young children aged 4 and 2, and we had always discussed trying for another, but upon arriving in Dubai we decided to give ourselves at least a year to settle in and then revisit the idea. Three months later, I found myself taking a pregnancy test, which was positive. Amidst all the excitement I had so many questions ranging from where to find an obstetrician to insurance issues as well as cultural practices at different hospitals. To be honest, it was quite daunting, and I did contemplate returning home to Australia to give birth. However, that simply wasn't a practical option. What unfolded, was by far the most empowering and supportive process, right throughout my entire pregnancy journey. Never did I think that giving birth in a foreign country would in fact be the best birthing experience I would encounter. I struggled with Hyperemesis (HG) throughout all three pregnancies and I can only describe that experience as traumatic, and therefore I knew this third pregnancy would be my last. My OB was Dr Christian Jozsa from Healthbay Clinic. From day one I felt very relaxed in his presence. He was supportive of my wishes to have a natural water-birth delivery, encouraged it and at each visit, explained how beautiful the experience would be. This was a pleasant surprise for me as I made the assumption that water-birth delivery would surely be uncommon here. Since becoming a mother for the first time, four years ago, I am in total awe of the female body and the power we exert during pregnancy and delivery. I have a newfound respect for myself and all women. After having my daughter, I became obsessed with birth stories and imagery of such intimate raw moments that represent the incredible strength and vulnerability that women are able to express at the same time. After two relatively easy births, I decided that my birth plan, the third time around, would involve as little intervention as possible. I had heard about hypnobirthing and wanted to explore this as an option of dealing with the pain and fear I still had from hearing so many traumatic (and very unhelpful) birth stories that are often told to expecting mums. I wanted to feel empowered during delivery, but I knew this would take a lot of inner strength. I wanted to work at retraining my brain to welcome the pain and enable my
body to use the pain with the mindset that with each level of pain intensity, I was closer to meeting my baby. I like to think my pain threshold is quite high, in fact all my years as an athlete I actually enjoyed training in different states of physical pain, because I was able to identify pain as a necessary part of achieving my end goal. I applied a similar mindset to birth; each surge and each level of intensity was necessary and that helped me to mentally process everything. Hypnobirthing is not simply about natural water births, it's about being informed to make choices that you are comfortable with. It's about learning skills and techniques and is ideal for any woman who is pregnant, whether you are planning to have an elective c-section, or if in fact you do want an intervention-free birth like I did. Even though I wanted a water birth, I also knew that on the day anything could happen.
24 | JANUARY 2020 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
Hypnobirthing was such a valuable tool as it helped me feel prepared for whatever scenario I might find myself in. Sometimes things can go wrong, but sometimes it's not about having to alter your plans for medical reasons, but instead unforeseen circumstances such as the environment not being what you had hoped for, the birthing pool not being available, staff shortages, or your OB not making it to the delivery (mine didn't!). I attended hypnobirthing classes by Ana Piera from The Dancing Birth (@thedancingbirth) and it was so informative, so gentle and calm the whole experience made me feel confident and excited about giving birth. Ana Piera is a certified doula, childbirth & hypnobirthing instructor, certified breastfeeding counselor and the mother of three young boys. She offered to be my doula, (a non-medical support person who assists the mother and couple during
the birth, by offering emotional and physical support as well as information) and at first, I wasn't sure that I wanted someone else in the room with me. However, I felt so comfortable in her classes, formed a true connection, and loved the way she approached birth judgment free. It was the best decision I could have made! She added a calm presence when things were getting tough, was soft and gentle, helping me and my husband to stay focused. As I slipped in and out of my own zone to deal with the pain, she calmly held me or put pressure on areas to help alleviate the surges. There were moments when I was really struggling with the surges of pain, my husband was a wonderful support, but when he could see that I was losing focus he started to get stressed, and it was at that moment that Ana stepped in and brought me back into the moment. I will be forever grateful for her support. I went full term with both my previous pregnancies, 40 weeks and 39 weeks, however I was certain (and somewhat hopeful) that baby number three would come early. So, at week 37 I was ready. By week 38 I was irritable and tired and by week 39, even more. By week 40 I was over it. I tried everything to naturally bring on labour, eating a pineapple a day, walking, bouncing on the swiss ball, yoga, eating spicy food and even watching stand-up comedy - you name it! But of course, I had to remind myself that there are in fact two people involved in birth, the mother and then the most important person, your baby. And it is the baby who will ultimately decide when they are ready to be welcomed into the world. I had to go back to practicing patience and gratitude, then four days after my official due date, while doing the regular school run, I started to feel contractions. I waited a couple of hours to make sure the contractions were regular, then I called my husband who works in Abu Dhabi, knowing he would need to leave immediately. As the day went on, I knew it was happening, and was determined to spend as much time as I could with my other two young children before their lives drastically changed. With contractions in full swing I still managed to do the school pick up. Once we were home, I just sat and played with the kids waiting for my husband to arrive. Thankfully my mum and brother were visiting from Australia and took the kids out for the evening so that I could relax and have some quiet time at home with my husband before heading to the hospital. I
sat on my swiss ball watching more stand up comedy to help the oxytocin flow. By 8pm it was time to head to the hospital. I chose Al Zahra Hospital to give birth, as it was well set up for water-births. Even though there is only one birthing pool, all other rooms are equipped with inflatable pools for women who wish to labour in the water. The doctor on duty advised that I was approximately 5cm dilated and to expect another four to six hours of labour. I looked at my doula and husband and shook my head, I knew it wouldn't take that long. I was right. The surges began to intensify almost immediately after I saw the doctor. I was managing really well with various breathing techniques and standing as I felt that relieved a lot of the pressure as the baby was beginning to transition. The room was calm and quiet, but I took myself into the bathroom for a moment just to myself. It was as if I knew the baby was ready. I slowly got into the bath and straight away felt a sense of calmness, but at the same time I felt the most extraordinary surge of pain. It was time. With the incredible support of my husband and doula, I was able to really be in tune with my body. No one told me when to push, but rather I was able to trust my body and allow it
to do what came naturally. So, with no forceful pushing, I was able to feel my baby make its way down and out. It was and will always be one of the most incredible memories for me to cherish. I was able to catch my beautiful newborn son and bring him to my chest immediately. What makes this experience even more special, is that it was captured through images and video by the incredibly talented Julie from ' (hellopetitbebe.com). I only wish she could have been at the births of my other two children. I now have photos and video footage that I can look back on for the rest of time. At 10.35pm on November 25th, Idris James was born into the water, and it was the best experience of my life. My stay at the hospital was lovely, the staff were accommodating but not forceful. They respected my wishes to visit us when we were awake and not to bother either myself or my new baby if we were sleeping. I even received a complimentary head and neck massage the day after delivery. Overall, the experience here in Dubai was wonderful. I am beyond delighted that I got the birth I had dreamed of. I will be forever grateful to everyone who formed part of my support team, my husband, my doula Ana, the midwives and my doctor (even though he wasn't at the birth) and my birth photographer.

POSTPARTUM RUNNING Getting back into running can be tough for some mums. Founder of the post-natal running group Trax Tribe, Tala Elajou, discusses her journey back onto the track 26 | JANUARY 2020 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
Running, babies and the post baby weight aren't exactly easy topics to talk about; it’s a minefield for mental health, your body isn’t the body you had pre pregnancy, you are wracked with the guilt that comes with wanting to get out of the house and have some time alone running. How about the fact that you find yourself inexplicably unable to control your bladder the way you’re used to? These are the first thoughts that will come to mind when new mums want to get back out running, but it's just the tip of the iceberg. The first question that will arise is, when can I start running after having a baby? Now, not all doctors will understand how important running might be to you, but at the end of the day, a doctor is the one who can assess the impact pregnancy has had on your body. Your OB or family doctor is the best person to give a general timeline for how long you should take off before attempting to run again, and their word is important. Usually, the general recommendation is six weeks off after giving birth, but even that may not be enough depending on numerous and personal factors. Your mind might feel ready to go, but your body might not be. Or maybe, your body feels good to go, but mentally you don’t feel good about it yet. Don’t feel ever any pressure to rush back. After getting the all clear from your OB, it is also worth seeking advice from a pelvic floor therapist (Tamara Ghazi at DISC is a fantastic chiropractor who worked with me throughout my pregnancy and has now also become a pelvic floor specialist), because this is one expert who really knows what the body has been through during pregnancy and birth. Not only will a pelvic floor therapist be able to see where your body is really at, but they understand what a postpartum mother is going through better than most physicians, and will likely give you the all-clear around the same time your intuition would have told you it is time. Whenever you decide that it’s your time to
go, be prepared for a long and bumpy road ahead. You will go through so many ups and down and you will be humbled because you will struggle. Eight months after having my son, I ran the Berlin Marathon. It was my own postpartum journey that led me to realize how lonely postpartum running can be. I did all my training for the marathon on my own. I would have loved to have had a group of like-minded women to go through the same journey I had, go for a run in a sleepdeprived state yet, share that same goal of running again after having had our babies. That’s where the idea of Trax Tribe; a postnatal running group in Dubai, came along. This isn’t about training for a marathon, we did that in child labor. This is about a community created for mum’s that love
to run. Getting back into running won’t be easy, but with Trax Tribe, the journey can be easier for you. I want mums to feel supported, be part of a community of likeminded mamma’s who love to run and are on the same journey. Mums, if you’re looking to get back into running or try it out for the first time, Trax Tribe will be that support, that family (which we need as expats), that community who guide you throughout your whole post partum journey. Who knows? Along the way you might make some lifelong friends and run in races you never thought you would have after having a baby. Join Trax Tribe every Sunday and Wednesday from 8:30AM at a Springs location and Kite Beach. Follow us on Instagram for details @traxtribe

CREATING RITUALS OF REMEMBRANCE Surviving the year following the loss of a child is never easy for parents. Ami Summers, author of therapist-reviewed grief workbook, Heart Space, takes us through the process she went through and her intentions for the New Year
When we lose a pregnancy or child, sadly, we lose a little part of ourselves. We mourn for what we’ve lost inside our bodies and what we will miss outside our bodies. And, we grieve for what could have been, and that little part of ourselves that we may not see again. When we lost our daughter Arla at 38 weeks, my husband (Dave) and I didn’t hesitate to see a grief counsellor. At the time, when it felt as if the ground had fallen away from our feet, our counsellor said something that to be honest, absolutely horrified me: “To truly get through grief, you have to go through it.” He explained that there is no ‘scooting around the edge’ with grief. It’s an immersive full-body experience, unmatched in its intensity. Grief pulls us underwater and just as we swim to the surface and begin to catch our breath, a wave will break and churn us into the deep below once more. Unforeseen and all consuming. “Oh no”, I thought. It was a sensible and matter of fact statement to make, which accurately portrayed the grief Dave and I would go on to experience – and I rationally agreed with
all that our counsellor said. However, during the intensity of our grief in those initial stages, there was a small part of us that ached for the ability to press fast forward, be spared and skip over some of the harrowing stages. I believed that if we focused on
28 | JANUARY 2020 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
finding a positive outcome from the tragedy of her death, we could bypass some of the heartache. I learnt over the next few months that our counsellor had indeed been right. Grief could be enlightening but was
the struggle of grief: I surrendered, I let go, and came to terms with the absoluteness of it all and tucked it under my wing as a blessing in disguise. The sadness allowed me to sit with the loss of our daughter, feeling like I had truly lost, and allowed me to embrace missing her and what could have been. The shapeshifting continued in that first year. Before long, it was December and a new year was on the not-so-distant horizon. As I had done in previous years, I went about setting some intentions – it was more rewarding than ever before, and feelings of hope and empowerment crept in and became the dominant emotion. Out of the shapeshifting comes a new, better version of self. One that is often stronger, wiser, more connected, and who embraces the whole experience of being human – from the lowest lows and depths of anger, to the enlightened highs and clarity that grief can bring. And as a new year manifestation, this is now my favourite intention to set. To think higher and feel deeper. After all, no matter how painful and dark places are that grief can shapeshift into, it's the purest form of love. If we hadn’t loved wholeheartedly, we wouldn’t feel loss.
also tumultuous and unpredictable. I realised the grieving for my child would be a shapeshifting lifelong experience that indeed, we had to go directly and wholeheartedly through. On some days, there was anger. Anger
became motivation, energy, and adrenaline to get through a difficult day. Denial protected the heart when it was feeling particularly raw, when my ‘mother-heart’ felt like I couldn’t protect her. Acceptance provided short term relief and peace from
Manifesting new year’s intentions was pivotal - while it brought the expected feelings of sorrow, it also encouraged feelings of hope and a vision for the future. Anyone who experiences grief could tell you that that feeling right there, of hope and courage, is the most valuable of them all. Being able to find it during the difficult parts is a gentle reminder that you’re okay and you are progressing through your journey. One day at a time.

MATTRESS MATTERS
Good, relaxing sleep is as vital as a balanced diet and regular exercise, for maintaining optimal health and wellbeing. We sleep a third of our lives, and the quality of sleep we get directly effects the other two thirds of our lives. Dominik Zunkovic, Founder of WHISPER mattresses discusses why these special mattresses are great for the family
30 | JANUARY 2020 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
The New Year is all about a fresh start, giving your mind and body a reset and focusing on lifestyle elements that help you achieve this. A mattress is one of them. It’s the most significant element of our daily routine, to help us rest, recover and recharge for the day ahead. Find out what a mattress should be doing for your body and the health benefits of investing in this particular one. In today’s day and age, everyone uses their mobiles in bed. Why should people invest in mattresses that block EMF rays? Any electronic devices – mobiles, tablets, laptops and even the charging cables next to your bed and electricity cables in your walls – all emit electromagnetic waves (EMFs) which are very harmful to your health. EMF waves do not only interfere with your brainwaves and disrupt regular sleeping cycles but are also categorized as a class 2B carcinogen (cancer and tumor producing) by the World Health Organization. You can leave your electronic devices outside your bedroom if you want to eliminate EMF exposure, however, you cannot remove the electricity cables from your walls every night. These charging cables, in fact, produce over 1,000 times more EMFs than a modern smartphone. With these in mind, it is essential that we protect ourselves from such radiation during the eight hours we spend in bed, after all, that is a third of our lives. The Original Mattress comes with the Silver Shield. It comprises a grounding cable and once plugged into an outlet next to the bed, the Silver Shield technology creates a 1-meter zone around the mattress, which eradicates 99% or more of all EMF waves. The Silver Shield technology has been tested and certified, and we are happy to show a live demonstration too. Discuss the health benefits of investing in a good mattress. Any specific advantages for mums? During sleep, the human body is working to support and maintain our physical health. Also, it is in the deeper stages of sleep that our body is able to re-energise and remove harmful toxins from our brains, which if they build up over time can actually kill you or lead to disorders such as schizophrenia, autism, or Alzheimer’s. The sleep-loss epidemic happening today is not only caused by modern lifestyle. Getting too hot at night also causes interrupted sleep, while there are those who get aches and pains in the morning due to
bad sleeping posture. Our bodies change over time, and in the case of women, even more rapidly when they are expecting a new family member. In those cases, it is very important that the mattress adjusts to the individual and not the other way around.
use for five to ten years of your life.
3
One of the largest sleeping problems reported globally is issues with too much heat at night. Search for mattresses that use open-cell foams and completely breathable fabrics.
4
How to pick the perfect mattress? Five tips to keep in mind when shopping
1
It is impossible to determine whether or not you will sleep well on a mattress in a brightly lit showroom, simply by lying down on it for a few minutes. Choose a brand that offers a reasonable trial or exchange period. Our customers get a risk-free 100-night sleep trial, and if our products do not suit them, we pick them up and refund them in full. Great sleep shouldn’t be risky nor expensive.
2
The mattress is probably the only item you use more than your phone. Don’t be afraid to invest in an item that directly effects your wellbeing and happiness, and you will
Look out for products that adjust to your body to offer optimal support. The bulgy parts of your body (hips and shoulders) are supposed to sink in more, to ensure your spine and neck are properly aligned. Just sticking a few different types of foams together isn’t going to get the job done, so try and see the design of the inside of the mattress to assess whether or not it is able to offer you proper alignment.
5
Choose hypo-allergenic products that prevent congestion, allergies, bacteria, dust mites, and bed bugs. Over two million dust mites will settle in a mattress that is a year or older, if it has no protection against them. Look out for products that use longterm preventive measures like silver yarn to ensure you are protected against these pests.
WHAT WE THOUGHT? A tried and tested review
The WHISPER mattress isn’t your typical kind. It arrives in a large box – making it insta-worthy! – with two experts to carefully place the plush mattress on your bed and further explain the benefits. Designed to deliver deep sleep, the mattress contains silver, which has long been known for its antibacterial properties. It also naturally ionizes, that is, it reacts with oxygen to form small particles called ions. I was told advances in technology allow 99.9% of all bacteria to be eliminated during the ionization process, killing dust mites and bed bugs as well. Not only is this important for general hygiene reasons, but it is also beneficial for maintaining clear and
radiant skin – always a plus for women! It did take a couple of days for my body to get used to the mattress, which is normal. My first impression was that it felt like a soft mould, with that sink-in feeling that is common with hotel beds. Within a few weeks of using it I noticed an incredible improvement with my usual back and neck aches, and I no longer found myself waking up in the middle of the night. The result, I woke up refreshed and was incredibly alert at work as well. Just goes to show that good sleep really does make a remarkable difference. Visit whisper-sleep.ae for more information

and helped me learn the diversity of culture, gave me a broader perspective of education and people. Having served in a corporate like Lloyds Steel and a CSR school of Zydus Cadila, this was altogether a different experience which I cherished much.
Please tell us about your school curriculum. We basically serve the Indian Community and follow CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) Board. We have the NCF (Nation Curriculum Framework) to guide us. Our books for senior classes are published by NCERT (National Council of Education and Research Training). The NCF and NCERT serve as base, however the Educators are free to explore avenues and follow the need-based pedagogy.
What sets your school apart from others in the city? Our 9 Gems philosophy which ensure physical fitness, mental alertness, moral uprightness, spiritual divinity, in short, the holistic development of each child, as well as our GCIE (Global Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship) which prepares children for the 21st Century skills and career. Programs like Qutuhal (the journey of Curiosity), WoW (Weekends of Wonder) CBGCA (Chandu Borde Global Cricket Academy) to name a few are our unique initiatives.
Any specific activities? Under GCIE we have Space trooper’s activity for the Winter Camp and boot camps to nurture young entrepreneurs.
We also organize Al Tasamuh, an interschool event where the competitions are based on 9 Gems. In addition to this, we offer Home Economics where children are trained in finance, home tasks and moreover themselves.
Any notable achievements from the students in the past? Our first board batch secured 100 % results. We were the second best in Al Tasamuh inter-school event. One of our students also secured first position in Shakespeare Challenge at regional level.
What should parents keep in mind when enrolling their children at your school? At GIIS, our mission is to nurture the generation of today to lead the world tomorrow. Our education system consists of globally experienced and caring teachers that inculcate strong virtues and values in students to develop an allrounded personality. Our students are our top priority and we encourage interactions between students and teachers to build strong relationships. Each parent seeks a degree of assurance for a secure and promising future for their youngsters. Sometimes, such insistence leads to a life embattled with doubt and fear which calls for a change in mindset and more acceptance of newer structures. GIIS follows a belief system that revolves around embracing new structures and challenges their students to engage in deep learning and mindful thinking. The ‘Parent of the Year’ is not the one with the most successful child; but the one with the happiest.

HIT THE RE:SET BUTTON Aakanksha Tangri, founder of Re:Set (an online platform which focuses on mental health) discusses the need for this wellbeing resource
36 | JANUARY 2019 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
How would you define Re:Set? Re:Set is an online platform which focuses on real stories and resources around education, parenting, mental health, wellbeing and people of determination. We feature powerful in-depth stories and original reporting alongside digestible resources for people to access topics that are often stigmatized. It’s a safe space where people can share their stories, ask questions and read about those who lived through the experiences or have been on a similar journey before them. How does Re:Set aim to dispel stigma around mental health? One of the first steps to dispelling stigma is by talking about it and that’s exactly what we’re doing through various avenues such as #ReSetDialogues where we feature panelists who are experts, people living/who have lived through a particular mental health condition among others and have the community participate in that. Re:Set also has free resources around mental health, for people to access, and we raise awareness through our stories on our website and on social media. I’d like to add that many of us are able to have these conversations and facilitate them because we’re privileged enough socio-economically and culturally. It is important to remember that talking about one’s challenges and being vulnerable takes a lot of courage and strength. Can parents benefit from this source? Yes, absolutely! Parents are judged all the time, especially mothers. Whether you aren’t breastfeeding your child till a particular age or you’re breastfeeding for too long, whether the parent chooses to stay at home or goes back to work, how much screen time you give your child, every decision comes under scrutiny and parents are often wracked with guilt and made to feel like nothing they do is good enough. We realize that, and Re:Set is a non-judgmental place for parents. We are a resource and forum to share insider knowledge, know-how and dialogue around the challenges and success of parenthood.
Any specific topics parents/schools should be discussing with children? Mental health, bullying (including cyber) and peer pressure, social media and academic pressure are all relevant topics for parents and schools to have a conversation with children about. According to the World Health Organization, 10-20% of youth between the ages of 10-19 experience mental health conditions with depression being the fourth leading cause of illness and disability among those aged 15-19. It’s important that children know there are responsible adults they can turn to when they need help or that there is simply someone to speak to. Having a stable support system, especially one where educators and parents work in conjunction, will provide kids with the emotional support they need.
Why should mental health and wellbeing be a significant topic at classrooms and home? Statistics show us that mental health challenges are prevalent among the youth and having conversations about these often stigmatized topics will not only normalize them but empower and encourage kids to seek help when they need and dispel the stigma. Children will also learn empathy and be able to understand what their peers or even their parents could be going through. Starting conversations early will make people more proactive and not reactive and get help at an earlier stage. Discussing the importance of well-being and well-being techniques will equip students with the necessary tools they need as coping strategies and help them be more holistic and wellrounded individuals.

TALISE OTTOMAN SPA, JUMEIRAH ZABEEL SARAY
Get ready to be transported to the Ottoman Empire, when you visit this expansive spa nestled on The Palm Jumeirah. For years, friends and family members have been recommending Talise. Not just for the extensive spa offerings, but for the incredible ambience and hospitality. I was given a tour of the spa premises built with marble, dark woods, mosaics and murals, and instantly made a mental note to try each of the facilities, including the stunning indoor salt-water Thallasotherapy swimming pool, adventure showers, heated marble loungers, and Jacuzzi. I was taken to the changing room soon after and was asked to slip into my robe and head to the steam room to let my pores open up for the Turkish Hammam experience that was to follow. After taking in steam for ten minutes, I was escorted to the Turkish Hammam area and was lost for words. My eyes first met the jacuzzi sited right in the centre, surrounded by private relaxing areas and lanterns. As I walked through the large wooden doors at the back of the room, I was blown away by the attention to detail. I took off my robe to lay down on the large marble slab placed at the centre, looking up to the dome decorated with intricate colourful tiles, really capturing the essence of the Ottoman Empire. My therapist poured large jugs of warm water all over my body and began scrubbing my skin with medium pressure to slough off dead skin cells. There’s a strange gross,
yet satisfying, feeling when you see layers of dirt being cleansed off. After scrubbing my body from head to toe in various motions, I was washed again and felt a thick airy layer of foam being applied. The soft foam coated my body entirely before she massaged it with olive oil soap to nourish skin. I was soon taken to the water fountain area, where I was asked to take a seat as warm water was poured over. A minty shampoo was used to cleanse my hair, instantly refreshing my scalp, before a conditioner was applied. All along, all I could think of was, 'This is how the royals were bathed back in the day. How incredible!’
44 | JANUARY 2020 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
Once done, I headed to the cabana outside - touching my soft supple skin all along - to quench my thirst with ayran (a salty drink) and dried fruit, before jumping into my swimmers to use the facilities. The marble recliner lounge was where I spent most of my time, as the heat helped alleviate back pain. To relax, listen to the sound of nature and breathe in fresh air, I headed for the Thai terrace with a cup of warm herbal tea in hand. The traditional Turkish hammam experience (45 minutes) is priced at Dhs510. Contact +9714 453 0456

The restaurant also offers an extensive selection of concoctions that the staff are happy to recommend according to your liking. The chef has given traditional dishes an Asian twist, with chillis playing the lead role on this innovative menu. We began our meal with moreish lotus root chips and a creamy guacamole for that authentic experience, followed by charred corn salad with homemade queso fresco and sundried tomatoes to complement each ingredients’ flavours and textures. From the taco menu, we had to try the El Dorado; a black tortilla pressed with 24k gold, succulent A9 Wagyu, avocado cream and shaved black truffle. A dish that isn’t just gorgeous to look at but tastes incredibly delicious too. The baja fish tacos came in highly recommended as well, with a stunning habanero mayo that coated the crisp fish. For entrées, don’t miss the Mexszechuan chicken; a true representation of the chef’s travels through Asia. Arbol chilli, coriander, cashew nuts and crunchy fried garlic chips coat the entire chicken, lending a gentle heat with every flavoursome morsel. If you have space for one dessert, share the Mictlan. The beautifully presented dessert features a gold covered skull filled with a velvety chocolate and lime mousse accompanied by mint moss. Contact 04 873 3377 46 | JANUARY 2020 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
REVIEW
SOUL STREET, FIVE JUMEIRAH VILLAGE CIRCLE This vibrant, bustling restaurant is perched on the fifth floor of the hotel and is filled with character. The interiors are segregated by design elements native to various countries and regions – a tuk tuk and paintings to resemble India; cherry blossoms for Japan; Parisian boulangerie for France; Pablo Escobar for Latin America, Arabia, and graffiti for that European city vibe. Begin your meal with the Raj Kachori; a light, fluffy semolina shell with pumpkin mash, sweet yoghurt and a mix of chutneys - a great twist on the otherwise heavy classic version – and the lip-smacking chicken satay or the tostones (fried plantain topped with black beans, pico de galo, chipotle aioli and picked cabbage). Rice-lovers have to try the creamy curd rice served with flavoursome shrimps and a spicemarinated onion mixture. Little ones will absolutely love the chicken tenders (Franco) that they can dunk into accompanying sauces. For something a bit more substantial for the family, we highly recommend the Bombay Bhaji Pav, comprising buttery mashed potato cooked with spices, served with onions, lime and pav (buttered buns) on the side. Another highly recommended entrée is the beef bao. Three pillowtextured soft buns are filled with rice, slaw and a delectable minced beef mixture coated with a typical dark Asian sauce. End the meal with a bubble waffle ice cream sundae or churros. Contact 04 455 9989

HEAD FOR THE SLOPES
St. Moritz offers fun, après and more for the family. By Rowena Carr-Allinson 48 | JANUARY 2020 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
Everyone’s heard of St Moritz. A snowy playground for the rich and famous, it’s where European royalty likes to ski and where millionaires zoom in private jets to make the most of the Swiss winter wonderland. But, what most don’t know is that it’s a super child-friendly environment where families can relax and kick back in luxury and comfort.
ACTIVITIES Ice skating
CHECK INTO…
The Kulm Hotel in St Moritz to stay in one of the country’s most famous historic hotels, where it’s all about plush comfort and five-star service. Part of being taken care of is that no detail is left unthought of – and that includes junior’s needs too. In the room, you’ll find activity booklets and pencils, daily sweet treat deliveries (Kinder eggs and raspberries were our favourite!) and a furry companion for the night to take home – not to mention the softest dressing gowns in the right size and matching slippers. In addition to skiing, St Moritz also has a beautiful ice skating rink where the kids can try their hand at gliding on the ice. A graceful sport from a bygone era that still has the kids in fits of laughter.
Horse drawn sleigh trips
If, like us, your ski plans are somewhat scuppered by an unwilling child (or bad weather) there’s heaps to do in the hotel, including a fabulous spa and pool. Overlooking the snowy mountains and the frozen lakes, the kids can spend hours splashing in the shallow ‘baby’ pool and on the slide, not to mention enjoying the warm water and spa bubbles in the outside pool. Even the kids get that being outside in -10 but in warm water, is a unique treat. The Kulm Hotel’s kids club is on another level too. The kids won’t believe their luck. Whether you want to ski or not, whatever your age, the five-star hotel has it all figured out, with activities including pizza baking, movie nights and even an indoor bouncy castle.
It sounds like something out of a fairy tale, but kids who ski in St Moritz get the horse-drawn carriage treat daily. After riding up to the first level of the Corviaglia mountain on the funicular train, there’s a carriage ride through a private road to the base of the slopes where the ski school is set. Picturesque and fun.
The hotel also offers its younger guests free ski lessons with the Swiss Ski school. An instructor will pick them up at the ski room and bring them home after lunch, while parents can happily hit the slopes together. The Ski school starts from 3 years of age and runs on weekends or weekdays for full or half days. Winter rates at the Kulm Hotel St. Moritz start from CHF675 (approximately Dhs2,500) for two, sharing a double on a halfboard basis and including multiple benefits; for more details and to book, visit kulm.com MOTHER, BABY & CHILD | JANUARY 2020 | 49

WHAT EVERY PET OWNER SHOULD KNOW
What a great privilege owning a pet can be. How they reward us with a beautiful companionship that feeds our souls. Our pets depend completely on us to meet their every need. As part of their daily care we take our four-legged friends for vet visits and for professional grooming sessions to ensure they stay clean and healthy
Grooming, aside from maintaining our pets’ appearances is vital to their comfort, good health, and helps them feel great. It may be your professional groomer who’s the first to detect health issues and can alert you if veterinary attention is needed. As grooming appointments are often far apart, there are a few things you can also do to ensure the best for your beloved pet. Regular hair brushing is so vital and the most basic care every pet requires. It will avoid having your pet getting shaved; that your groomer may recommend once matting is too much. Brushing sessions can become a bonding time for you and your pet, so use it to your advantage. Brushing a long-haired pet should always be done before their bath else any tangles or knots will worsen and become tighter on the skin once wet. Detangling carefully and deep brushing is crucial to avoid matting, by brushing all the way to the pet’s skin and gently working out knots with the brush. In the event your pet is shedding and has an undercoat it’ll need to be thinned out, professionally. Many pet breeds have over-active tear ducts and it leaves stains and a build-up in their eyes. You can wipe the corner for your pet’s eyes using wet wipes, gently. Eye ‘boogies’
will eventually harden and can leave a thick crust in the corners of your pet’s eyes and along the nose. This can result in bacterial or yeast infection of the eye. If you detect a foul odour around the eyes this could be a sign of an infection. Your professional groomers are able to remove the ‘boogie’ build-up, however sometimes there is irritation and even a sore left in this area, in case the build-up has hardened. This can be easily avoided by cleaning pets’ eyes regularly. Now, who doesn’t enjoy a good ear cleaning! After you bathe your pet, give their ears a good cleaning. Dogs with heavy ears and those breeds with hair growth inside the ear canal are prone to ear infections. Your groomer will remove the hair from the ear as necessary. At home you can use a veterinarian recommended ear cleaner and cotton balls to clean the inside of the ear and just slightly down the ear canal. Extremely dirty ears may need to be flushed and massaged to loosen up any dirt and wax build-up. Swelling, redness around the ears, pet scratching or shaking their head or a foul odor coming from the ears is a sign of infection and a vet visit may be due. Pets’ long nails can make it difficult to walk and often get snagged on blankets and
54 | JANUARY 2020 | MOTHER, BABY & CHILD
clothing and may curl and grow into the paw pads, causing extreme pain and infection. Clipping your pets’ nails at home is safely done as long as you avoid the vein line that grows inside the nail. Do not cut too short or too close to the vein line. If your pet has black nails these will be especially tricky to spot the vein. “Quick stop” or cornstarch can be applied to stop any nail bleeds. Regular pet bathing, at home or at the salon, is entirely safe; just avoid the ears. If you notice the skin drying out simply increase bathing intervals. Contrary to popular belief a sudsy lather is not required. As long as you reach their skin and offer a good massage followed by a deep rinse your pet will benefit largely from the session. If skin is itchy post bath it may be due to residual shampoo. A soapless or oatmeal shampoo also helps, if deep rinse post shampoo isn’t sufficient. If you notice any severe flaking, inflammation, oiliness, or a foul skin odor, your veterinarian may recommend a medicated shampoo. Remember, excess moisture from not drying your pet properly may lead to ear infections. Caring for your pet is rewarding for both yourself and them. Your time spent may help save money spent at the vet’s or at salons. Visit petsinthecity.me
