Hello mamas,
It’s so lovely to meet you all and to step into a new month as editor of Mother, Baby & Child.
As we move out of what felt like the neverending month of January, mum to mum, February feels like a collective exhale. We’re back in the groove of school runs and earlier starts, and the festive cobwebs have finally blown away.
Now that family routines for 2026 have found their feet, it’s time to enjoy the outdoors and the glorious weather that invites us to live al fresco. After-school park stops, homework in the garden, sunset walks around the neighborhood – there’s so much joy to be found in life’s everyday simplicities, offering the perfect opportunity for the kids –and you – to decompress.

On page 20, we explore beautiful outdoor spaces across the UAE, from hiking and ziplining in the mountains of Jebel Jais to snorkelling around Sharjah’s Shark Island – which, I might add, is far less intimidating than it sounds. There are so many wonderful adventures to be had. We also round up the country’s best farms for animal encounters, free play, and discovery.
In keeping with the month of love, you’ll find suggestions for Valentine’s date nights on page 19, as well as family-friendly brunches on page 14 – the kind curated to be fun for the whole family, not just the kids.
This month also marks the arrival of the holy month of Ramadan – a time of respect, appreciation and reflection for all that we’re blessed with. For those celebrating, we’ve included a dedicated Ramadan section from page 29, where we explore child-friendly activities during Ramadan, family-suitable iftars, and emotional wellbeing while fasting.
When it comes to health and wellness, you’ll find expert insight into shaping healthy eating behaviours in children, must-visit spas in Dubai, the latest wellbeing news, and beauty finds you’ll actually use.
I hope this issue helps you continue discovering this wonderful country we all call home. Wishing you and yours a lovely month ahead, and a very blessed beginning to Ramadan.
Warmly,

Mummy and mini: matching bedtime magic with Mimi & Nunu
There’s something quietly powerful about the moments we wind down with our children – bedtime stories, cuddles, and the ritual of slipping into pyjamas that feel just right. Mimi & Nunu, a new sleepwear brand founded by British creative and mum Peta Al Akawi, taps into that everyday magic with a generous dose of colour, nostalgia and self-expression.
Created for families who love prints and believe that “more is more,” Mimi & Nunu is all about turning simple routines into moments of comfort and connection. The brand’s debut print, Jungle Disco, is a playful celebration of imagination: rollerskating leopards, disco balls, palm trees and rainbows dance across a soft pink backdrop, inviting both grown-ups and little ones into a world where bedtime feels anything but boring (and, what’s more fun than matching?)
Designed with both adults and children in mind, Mimi & Nunu’s matching sleepwear pieces encourage togetherness without taking themselves too seriously. Inspired by Peta’s own journey through fashion, creativity and motherhood, and by her daughter Mavia’s expressive style, the brand gently suggests that even at the end of a long day, there’s room for joy, colour and authenticity.
Priced at AED 495 per adult set and AED 295 per child set, the button-down matching sets are made from 100% breathable cotton and can be purchased via mimiandnunu.com.

DO
Where to go, what to do, and how to make the most of time together. This month we’re exploring the UAE’s great outdoors and all there is to enjoy, the best family-friendly brunches in Dubai, and where to go for a special date night –just the two of you.
From playful entertainment to crowd-pleasing menus, these family-friendly brunches prove you don’t have to compromise on quality to enjoy a relaxed, memorable weekend with the kids.

If you’re searching for a family brunch that feels like a full-blown mini holiday, Lapita’s Polynesian-themed LuWow Brunch has just delivered one of the most exciting new Saturday spots to be.
Taking place every Saturday from 1pm to 5pm (extra points for extended hours), LuWow Brunch invites families to step into an island escape where colourful décor, upbeat music and the spirit of aloha set the tone from the moment you arrive. Hosted across three restaurants – Kalea, Kahuna and The Daily Scoop – the brunch is designed to keep everyone happy, from toddlers to teens (and parents, of course).
Food-wise, this is no ordinary family brunch. At Kalea, highlights include a seafood-on-ice station with fresh lobster and oysters, a sushi corner, and a charcoal grill serving Angus striploin, ribeye and lamb chops. There’s also a comforting roast station and Asianinspired favourites such as fragrant Thai chicken curry.
Over at Kahuna, families will find crowd-pleasing specialty pizzas –think burrata, pepperoni and parmegiana – alongside fresh salads, bruschetta, mushroom and cheese arancini, and a live gnocchi station finished tableside in a Parmesan wheel with truffle oil and Alfredo sauce.
For little (and big) sweet tooths, dessert is where LuWow shines. The Bake House tempts with beautifully crafted treats such as almond cherry cake, pistachio Paris Brest and coconut and passion fruit verrines. Meanwhile, The Daily Scoop is pure childhood
joy – featuring waffles, ice cream creations, a chocolate fountain, a donut wall and an impressive selection of 14 ice cream flavours with endless toppings.
A standout moment for children is the much-anticipated dessert room reveal, where young guests gather for a special unveiling of The Daily Scoop’s candy-themed dessert room.
Entertainment is at the heart of this brunch, with a packed line-up designed to keep energy levels high throughout the afternoon. Expect live Polynesian-style singing and dancing, circus acts, drumming workshops, character appearances including roaming Smurfs, and interactive performances by Magic Phil that encourage everyone to join in. Younger guests are well catered for with face painting, colouring stations, arts and crafts, island games and more –allowing parents to relax knowing the kids are fully engaged.
Adding appeal, brunch guests are welcome to enjoy full access to Lapita’s resort facilities, including swimming pools, a lazy river and splash pad, making it feel like a true daycation. For families wanting to extend the adventure, there’s also the option to add entry to one of Dubai Parks and Resorts’ theme parks: Motiongate, Legoland or Legoland Waterpark, for AED 199 extra per person.
Our verdict? This brunch feels like a holiday – and one that both parents and children will be counting down to all week long.
Packages are priced at AED 300 per person with soft beverages, AED 400 with house beverages, AED 500 for the sparkling package. Children aged three and under dine for free, while children aged 4 to 11 are priced at AED 150.

To reach Shark Island, you’ll find a group of small boats along Khorfakkan beach corniche. Most captains will barter with you, but average around AED 25 per person for a 10-minute boat ride to the island. You can rent masks and snorkel sets from one of the dive centers along the beach or bring your own.
It’s important to note that the island is inhabited, so you’ll not find any stores, restaurants or toilets once you’re there, so best pack a bag full of all the necessary goodies before setting off.

As Ramadan approaches and daily routines, eating habits, and sleep cycles begin to shift, these changes can affect more than physical health. Clinical Psychologist, Valen Valentine from Thrive Wellbeing Centre in Dubai shares expert guidance on helping children navigate the emotional and mental health challenges the holy month may bring.
How can parents support children who are fasting for the first time emotionally?
Fasting for the first time is as much an emotional experience as a physical one. Parents can support their children by focusing on encouragement rather than pressure, reminding them that effort matters more than perfection.
Create a calm, patient atmosphere and check in regularly about how they’re feeling, not just whether they’re just “doing well” or feeling hungry. Let them rest, acknowledge their pride, and celebrate small achievements. It is very important for parents to stay tuned to their emotions; frustration, fatigue, or pride and validate them all with warmth and understanding.
What emotional challenges do families commonly experience during fasting, and how can they prepare for them?
Most families often experience heightened sensitivity, emotional fatigue, and irritability

especially in the first few days of fasting. Children usually mirror parents’ stress, so predictability/routine and calm become key.
Emotional preparation means managing expectations as fasting is a learning process. Talk together as a family about what might feel hard and brainstorm coping strategies

ahead of time such as resting after school, quiet time before iftar, or gentle reminders to speak kindly even when we’re hungry. When families plan for the emotional side of fasting, it strengthens patience and connection.
How can parents model emotional patience and empathy for children while fasting?
Children learn mostly from what they see. Parents can model emotional patience by slowing down their responses when irritability rises; taking a breath before reacting, using softer tones, and admitting when they feel tired too. Saying, “I’m feeling hungry, and it’s making me grumpy so I will take a minute to calm down,” teaches and shows empathy in action. When children witness parents regulating their emotions with honesty, they learn that patience is a shared family value that even adults practice, not just an instruction.
What signs should parents watch for that a child or teen may be emotionally overwhelmed?
Parents should keep an eye out for sudden withdrawal, tearfulness, irritability, or negative self-talk like “I can’t do this” or “I’m a failure.”
Teens may become quieter or snappy and want to spend their time sleeping, while younger children might become clingy or resist routines.
Physical signs like fatigue, stomach aches, or difficulty concentrating can also reflect emotional overwhelm.
If a child’s distress lingers, let them take a compassionate pause.
Reassure them that it’s okay to take breaks, adjust, or fast for shorter periods. The goal is spiritual growth, not perfectionism and they will remain proud of them regardless.
What simple rituals can families introduce to encourage emotional check-ins?
Simple, consistent rituals help children feel emotionally grounded while fasting. Families can start an evening reflection ritual where after iftar, they spend five minutes sharing one “thankful moment” and one “challenging moment” from the day.
Younger children can draw their feelings and teens can write or talk. Families might light a candle or hold hands for a short gratitude circle. Even a small pause to take a slow breath together before breaking the fast can restore calm and connection. These small rituals teach mindfulness and empathy. When emotional check ins become part of the daily rhythm of fasting, families strengthen both fait and emotional resilience together. ----

Curiosity often starts with one simple question – “Why?” For many children, that question sparks a lifelong love of learning.
STEM learning – science, technology, engineering, and maths – builds on that curiosity by developing problem-solving, critical thinking, and creativity. Through hands-on, engaging activities, children can explore ideas, solve challenges, and gain skills that open doors to future opportunities.

Volcano eruption experiment
One for the thrill-seekers. Kids can create small ‘volcano’ using a bowl or bottle, and make it erupt using baking soda and vinegar. This activity teaches chemical reactions and gives a sense of cause and effect, helping to build critical thinking.

Build a nest
Help your littles make mama birds and their chicks feel welcome in your back garden by creating a nest. Ask your child to find some materials that would make a good nest, find a suitable spot outside of your home, and let them put together a homely nest to see if the animals take to it.
The challenge? To stop the egg from cracking. Task the kids with creating a container of safety suit that prevents an egg from cracking when being dropped from a height. This activity is great for teamwork and friendly competition to see which designs survive the drop test.

Kids can design ramps, tracks, or mazes for a marble to travel from start to finish. This activity encourages use of imagination and creativity by using different materials and spaces, while learning about gravity, speed, and angles through hands-on exploration.
This activity shows children how the capillary effect works in a clear and fun way. With a little physics, a hint of chemistry and a dash of childhood magic, you can create your very own rainbow. Simply fill several clear glasses with water, then add food colouring to each one and stir well. Place an empty glass between each filled glass and link them together using paper or cloth napkins. White napkins work best, as the colours show up more clearly. Before long, the water will begin to travel upwards through the napkins, carrying the colour with it. As the colours move and meet, they blend together, forming a beautiful rainbow before your eyes.

A birthday party at one of these spots pretty much guarantees you “cool mum and dad” status.

This natural, forest-style kids playground located just off Kite Beach offers up a mix of fun activities for kids, including animal encounters with friendly creatures like tortoises and goats, water play areas, climbing structures, wooden forts and more. It’s a space designed for play, exploration, and imagination, in a magical wilderness setting filled with trees, plants, streams, and farm animals.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS
Prioritising moments of wellness for physical, mental, and emotional health optimisation. This month we’re looking at shaping healthy eating behaviours in children, the must-visit spas in Dubai, covering wellbeing news and beauty you’ll actually use.

Good nutrition plays a vital role in children’s health, supporting growth, wellbeing and habits that can last a lifetime. Introducing healthy eating early helps children develop a positive, balanced relationship with food as they grow. Better still, building these habits doesn’t have to feel like a chore – it can be enjoyable, nourishing and something the whole family benefits from. Here are five simple ways to begin
1Lead by example
As the old saying goes – “monkey see, monkey do”. It’s important to lead by example and eat well – in front of your children. When kids see their grown-ups tucking into nutritious foods regularly, they are more likely to develop healthy attitudes towards eating, as opposed to children who grow up with parents constantly dieting, over- or under-eating, or refusing whole food groups like vegetables.
2Don’t use food as a reward
By offering children chocolate or sweets as a reward for eating their dinner, it adds pressure to mealtimes and sends the wrong message – that chocolates and sweets are the things worth eating – that they are the most valuable, as they are positioned as the treat.
To help kids value all food groups, try occasionally offering sweets during their routine snack times so that they are not used as bargaining tools or seen as just treat items they need to earn.
3Limit the number of choices offered
Creating different meals at dinner time for each member of the family is not only inconvenient but it does not help eating habits.
It’s important that there is at least one item on the table that a child is familiar with and likes, however, keep other options outside of what the family is eating limited. When children are only given their go-to foods, it prevents them from experiencing others.
4Take the pressure off to “finish your dinner”
While this approach may seem helpful in ensuring your child gets the nutrients they need, it can sometimes backfire, leading to food aversions and negative associations with mealtimes. Offering small portions of fruit or vegetables alongside a healthy food they already enjoy can help, as can letting them choose a new option to try together – a bit of positive encouragement also goes a long way. Making fruits and vegetables more visually appealing – arranged in fun, colourful shapes – may spark their interest, too. Just remember, it often takes several attempts before a child accepts and enjoys a new food, so patience and persistence are key.
5Keep portion sizes age-appropriate
Children are much smaller than us, and therefore, need smaller portions than us. Serving too much food on your child’s plate can be intimidating and discouraging for them – not to mention disappointing for the parent who sees a full plate, even after the child has tried everything.
6
Limit sugary juices and unhealthy snacks
If children are regularly topped up with cookies, crisps and juice pouches throughout the day, they’ll never reach the dinner table with a hearty appetite. Try to have limited and structured snack times so that tummies are ready to enjoy a healthy, balanced meal when they sit down at mealtimes.

What’s a brain bar? You ask. In a first for Dubai, Akari Wellness has introduced a science-led wellness sanctuary dedicated entirely to adaptogenic beverages and evidence-based therapies, including Red Light Therapy and Intermittent Hypoxic-Hyperoxic Training.
At the heart of Akari Wellness, Dubai lies the Brain Bar, an innovative café concept dedicated entirely to adaptogenic beverages. Located at One Central, the concept is integrated into Akari’s science-led wellness sanctuary, offering guests a purposeful pause to support both mental clarity and physical performance.
Designed to complement Akari’s evidencebased therapies, including Red Light Therapy and Intermittent Hypoxic-Hyperoxic Training, each drink is created with functional ingredients such as adaptogens, botanicals, collagen, and superfoods. The menu is entirely sugar-free and features Akari’s own house-made macadamia milk, a lactose-free alternative that is naturally low in sugar, anti-inflammatory, and gentle on digestion.
Speaking about the new concept, Katia de Rham, Founder of Akari and Brain Bar, said: “I started drinking adaptogen beverages almost a decade ago, and over time I realised how much of a difference these plant-based ingredients can make in supporting focus, energy, and resilience. We wanted to create something clean, healthy, intentional, and enjoyable, much like the space itself. ”
Looking specifically how this bar could help mums, the brain bar’s menu serves up a range of drinks that support steady energy, focus, and hydration without the jitters or afternoon crash. When used over time, the unique ingredients found in these beverages can aid stress management by regulating the HPA axis

and cortisol levels, as well as help to combat fatigue, brain fog (pregnancy brain), mood, emotional balance, and improve sleep quality.
Signature blends at the Brain Bar include ‘Shroom for Thought’, a lion’s mane and chaga latte designed to support focus; ‘Mind Over Mushroom’, a rich adaptogen-infused cacao latte; and ‘Cloud Nine’, a light matcha blended with coconut water. For skin and recovery support, options such as ‘Soft Focus’, combining collagen and tremella with cacao, and ‘Skin in the Game’, an adaptogen-

Lion’s Mane Mushroom: the brain builder

Reishi: the nervous system regulator
Reishi is famous for calming the nervous system and supporting immune balance. It helps your body respond to stress more effectively and promotes long-term resilience without sedation.

infused coffee latte with collagen, are crafted to deliver benefits from the inside out.
If you’ve heard the word ‘adaptogen’ floating around, you may think it’s just another health buzzword, but behind it sits a growing body of research, and a long history of traditional use. Adaptogens are a group of plant-based herbs and mushrooms that help the body respond more effectively to stress, fatigue, and mental overload – something many parents know all too well.
Rather than providing a quick jolt of energy like caffeine or sugar, adaptogens work more subtly. They support focus, mood, and sustained energy without the spikes and crashes, helping the body stay steady through long days and short nights.
What makes adaptogens unique is the way they work with the body. They help regulate stress hormones, support brain chemicals that influence mood and concentration, and strengthen the body’s ability to cope at a cellular level. Instead of pushing the system into overdrive, adaptogens encourage balance.
By supporting the nervous system, brain chemistry, and energy pathways, these plants help create the conditions for clearer thinking, more consistent energy, and greater resilience over time – benefits that can feel especially meaningful in the busy, demanding season of parenting.
