Have you ever woken up remembering a dream that left you wondering whether said dream has a hidden meaning?
Well, if yes, you can be sure that you are not the only one having these questions. There are various “dream diaries” rooted in different cultures, assigning possible outcomes of your life even to the weirdest creations of your mind. You can also be sure that we, the Adriatic Times Team, did our best to provide you with a compiled version of different dream diaries. Never again will you be left in the annoying unknown associated with finding the true meaning of your dreams.
If your answer to the first question was a “no”, you are still very welcome to familiarise yourself with the one and only Adriatic Dream Diary, a source of information as reliable as the Delphic Oracle.
Dream about losing one’s teeth
Having a dream like this may indicate that the house of the dreamer will become empty, metaphorically or literally. This may include the loss of a family member, their departure or temporary absence, or some illness or misfortune, but also a possibility that one’s relationships with other housemates will deteriorate.
Dream about taking a test
Tests are usually associated with fear and anxiety. Having a dream in which one is taking a test may indicate an underlying fear of failure. Additionally, if in a dream the dreamer is taking a test for which they don’t feel prepared, it may mean that the dreamer is not ready for the challenges of their life.
Dream about public nudity
The meaning of this dream is very ambiguous. On one hand, if the dreamer feels uncomfortable in their dream it may indicate that they are insecure about themselves or that they are ashamed of certain things, preferring to keep them hidden. On the other hand, if the dreamer feels comfortable, it may mean that the dreamer is brave and open to new life experiences.
Dream about falling
If the dreamer is falling in their dream it may indicate that they are in danger. Moreover, if the dreamer is falling from a high altitude it may signify that they will lose some of their savings. If the falling happens in slow-motion, it may suggest that the dreamer has issues with human interactions.
Dream about pregnancy
Being pregnant in a dream may mean that one’s life will soon be full of new possibilities and opportunities. A dream like this doesn’t necessarily prove that the dreamer will get pregnant, but rather that they will be presented with a chance to realise their dreams. However, if in the dream the dreamer is not pregnant themselves, but instead sees someone pregnant, it may mean that they will get lucky in the material dimension.
DREAM
I heard a sweet voiceComing from my old mother,A hint of joy shone,
But alas, it was a dream.
The trickling spring there Was falling, like pearl It was clear as crystal. It was a shattering dream!
And the melody was sad, dear Remembered childhood days.
I felt my mother's kiss
Oh, too bad it was a dream!
Longing pressed to her chest, She wiped my eyes - it was very wetBut my tears were falling...
Oh, why was it a dream...
Art Focus
WITH ALICE RUSTICO
To begin with, what types of art are you particularly interested in creating?
I’m a huge DIY:er. I like arts and crafts, and even though I’m not particularly artistic I can embroider, knit and crochet quite a bit. These are the things I focus on, something I can touch and work on over an extended period of time and which is relaxing.
How do you perceive art as an everyday form of expression for you? And how do you incorporate it into your everyday life?
I might sound really grandma-like, but whenever I crochet or knit I tend to go for specific colours that make me feel either happy or calm: so a lot of pink, a lot of purple, a lot of yellow I think it is really therapeutic for me and something I do because I feel like doing it. It is an outlet and helps me unwind. It is a little time for me, and me exclusively, unless the cat decides she wants my yarn…
And I make sure to make room for it, not necessarily every single day, but I do try to do that so I can take my mind off of work and life.
Do you think the way we dress and present ourselves in the world is a form of artistic choice? And if so, what choices have you made about the way you want to express yourself?
I think it definitely is, and as well a form of personal expression. Since coming to work here, I think I’m more aware of the way people dress Not necessarily because I pay attention, but because the students in the college especially tend to.
I’m a child of the 80s and 90s, which I think were very bad fashion periods where the clothes definitely weren't “ me ” . So I was never the stereotypical youth in the way I dressed and it always made me feel like I wouldn’t fit in with the people my own age, which might be why I really do admire that the students here either just don’t care or are very bold in the choices that they make. And they always tend to look amazing! I usually gravitate towards a very weird mixture of Disney stuff and vintage looking clothes, because that is the way I like things But it does influence quite a bit how I perceive myself and others in a way - but I love the non-judgemental vibe at the college which is quite refreshing.
Do you then think that art has more value as an object you observe and experience only from a distance or as something you can also utilise and immerse yourself into?
I would say both. I can still enjoy a sculpture or painting but there is also something incredible about being immersed in art. Last year, there was a Monet exhibition where they at the very beginning of the exhibition projected the Water Lilies that Monet was so very famous for on this wall, and you would basically walk into the painting which took the experience to a whole new level. Even though you couldn’t touch them it felt like you were in the garden with him when he painted the Water Lilies and that to me was a really new way of experiencing these paintings which I like so very much Of course if you talk about other artforms, like manual arts or cooking, then the perk is that you get to eat the art you make or wear the sweater you knitted
Is there in your opinion such a thing as “good” or “bad” art? Have you ever felt pressured by your surroundings’ view of what is good and bad art?
Sometimes I fail to understand the point of some artforms where it feels like the artist has just thrown a bucket of paint at the canvas I’m sure that this might be super meaningful for them but it makes me wonder what the difference then is in comparison to the drawings I did when I was five. I would also say that my opinion was very much influenced by having studied art history when I was in high school and so, as with everything else in the Italian school system, we start from ancient Roman times and then we move on and don’t necessarily talk about contemporary art, leaving me stuck with a
College decision season is approaching. Many people are waiting for the results of their college applications. Some already know their destination and others are still unsure of where they’ll go after leaving Duino. It’s a time of dreams achieved, expectations let down and ambitions reshaped. Ogi has been working in the college admissions office for years and guides students through the process of university applications.
Do you have any advice for people who’ll receive their results soon?
When talking about university applications, I think the key aspect is not to put too much expectation on it. Some ideas students have about a certain place can often be a product of imagination. Their success and what they will do in their lives, in their careers, in their studies depends more on how they’re going to behave and what they’re going to do when they get there. Once they reach these places and have those experiences they’ll understand that their preconception about a university that was their dream choice is wrong.
To take it a step further, there’s more to universities than the name. Prestigious universities often have an aspect of competitiveness as well. Sometimes the students might have the profile to be admitted to those places but maybe other aspects of the university life do not match their preferences. I had stories in the past of students that got into their “dream college” and hated it. My job is to identify those aspects and to try to advise the student on what would suit them best. For example, you might qualify for this, you might be admitted but I don’t think it's the kind of experience you’re looking for and what you would enjoy doing. It’s a complex issue because not every clue is in one’s academic profile or in one’s expectations and dreams. A lot of it you can only learn once you get there. Through the experience I had working with previous generations I try to identify the best fit and relax the students. My main advice would be not to develop very high expectations and become fixed with a certain name or idea and to be more open minded instead.
Now, not as a university counsellor but as an adult in general. Is there anything you would like to say to the students? Something you would’ve liked to know when you were a teenager yourself?
As an adult and partially as a university counsellor, I think education is a long process. Nowadays everybody thinks that the next step is the most important one. The next step after this graduation is probably three four years of an undergraduate degree and in the world we’re living in now, that's probably not the most important step in your education. The most important steps will come after. Partly in terms of specialisation and to some extent because during their university education a lot of students will realise what they actually want to do in their lives. Now they might have an idea and this idea might be more or less precise but during the next four years those ideas will get clearer andthey might even completely change their future and their studies and so on. Given the fact that people these days often continue to study further than an undergraduate degree, the next phase is an important one, but not the one that will define one’s career or life.
Is achieving our dreams really what we want most or is it a clichè?
Some dreams might be influenced by the environment. By friends, by peers, by where you are, the upbringing you’ve had and so on. I do believe some dreams are influenced by the environment and are not so personal. That they’re not entirely a product of your own will in a way. Personally speaking, I really admire students and people in general who have a dream and act on achieving it. I might have had dreams but often I was a bit too realistic in considering the future.
I was maybe not courageous enough to try certain things that maybe one could’ve tried and maybe failed, fine, but you know you could’ve tried. Partially they’re influenced by the environment but then there are people who have a genuine dream and kind of work towards achieving that and that is certainly admirable.
INTERVIEW W/
OGI
FINN AND FRANS
The air was thick with a sense of foreboding and icy tendrils of fear stuck themselves in every crevice of the room.
Frans sat nervously on the couch, his hands shaking as he confided in Finn. “You don’t get it, Finn. The ghosts are real, and they’ve killed everyone we love.”
Finn raised an eyebrow, taking a sip of his beer. “That sounds frightening, Frans. Perhaps you should see a doctor.”
Frans leaned in, his eyes darting around the room. “I swear, I’ve seen them. The ghosts, I mean. My Aunt Margaret, my grandma, they’re both dead but I keep seeing them. They’re following me, Finn. And they’re not alone.”
Finn scoffed, leaning back in his chair. “Come on, Frans. You’re not seriously suggesting that dead people are coming back to life and murdering us, are you? You need to calm down.”
Frans let out a shaky breath and raked his fingers through his hair, pulling at it in desperation. “You’re not getting it, Finn. It’s not just that they’re dead, it’s like their ghostly remnants are still here, simmering with spite and malice, and they’re out for blood!” He slammed his fist into his palm, punctuating his words with a frantic urgency. “We’re being haunted Finn! Haunted by the undead, the angry, and the downright pissed off!”
The ghost watched the two boys from the corner of the room, seething with anger at Finn’s dismissive attitude. “Oh, you think I’m not real, do you?”, the ghost thought. “Well, let me tell you something Finn. I’m very real, and I’m going to kill you both.”
Finn rolled his eyes. “Well, that’s just ridiculous. What do you suggest we do? Call a ghostbuster?”
“I’m telling you, Finn, these ghosts are real! They’re out to get us!” Frans got to his knees in front of Finn, his watery eyes pleading. “We have to do something, Finn. We can’t just sit here and wait for them to kill us. ”
Finn rolled his eyes. “Dude, you need to relax. You’re giving me anxiety just listening to you. ”
Frans glared at him. “This isn’t a joke, Finn! I saw my grandpa’s ghost last night. He was holding a chainsaw and charging at me!”
Finn chuckled. “Uh-huh. And how did you escape?”
“I woke up screaming, covered in sweat!” Frans exclaimed. “But it felt so real, Finn. I can’t shake the feeling that something terrible is going to happen.”
The ghost boiled with wrath and resentment as it watched Frans and Finn argue about its existence. They had no idea what they were dealing with. They didn’t understand the depth of the ghost’s rage, the intensity of its fury. “You boys don’t believe in ghosts? How cute,” the ghost thought to itself. “Well, I’m about to make you believers, all right. And by ‘believers,’ I mean terrified corpses. ”
Finn rubbed his temples. “Look, man, you ’ re letting your imagination run wild. Maybe you just need to lay off the ghost stories before bed. Maybe you need to see a therapist or something, Frans. This is getting out of hand.”
Frans crossed his arms. “Oh, sure. Just ignore the fact that the ghosts are murdering everyone we know. Besides, I can’t afford a therapist, Finn,” Frans replied. “Not with all the funeral expenses I’ve been paying lately.”
“Funeral expenses?” Finn shook his head and huffed. “What funeral expenses?”
“You know, for all the people the ghosts have been murdering!” Frans exclaimed. “My aunt and uncle, my neighbour, my dog…”
“Your dog was murdered by a ghost?” Finn asked incredulously.
“Yes!” Frans nodded solemnly. “He was decapitated by a ghostly machete!”
“You two are in for a real treat,” the ghost cackled to itself. “I’m going to haunt you so hard, you’ll be begging for an exorcism. Let me assure you, I have a whole arsenal of spooky tricks up my spectral sleeves. Oh, how I will take your lives. Slowly, painfully, until you beg for mercy. But there would be no mercy, only the cruel ecstasy of slaughter.”
Finn couldn’t help but feel sorry for Frans. “That’s terrible, man. I’m sorry for your loss. But you ’ re clearly delusional.”
Frans scowled, getting frustrated with Finn’s scepticism. “Look, Finn, I don’t have time for this. I need to start preparing for the inevitable ghostly invasion.”
Finn shrugged. “Suit yourself. But I’m not joining you on your ghost hunting escapades.”
Frans looked him dead in the eye. “When the ghosts come for you in the night, don’t say I didn’t warn you. ”
The ghost couldn’t wait any longer. It approached the two boys with a wicked grin, its ethereal form contorting into an otherworldly shape. Frans and Finn froze, their faces ashen with fear. The ghost floated towards them, its transparent form flickering in the dim light.
MY DREAM Varoujan Sepetdjian
Elizabeth’s 15 years old nephew:
The realization of dreams does not fall from the sky, you have to fight for them, strive for them and definitely achieve them, my mother used to say when I was a little younger than now Of course, I have been convinced more than once that when you want something badly, the whole universe helps you achieve it. For example, when I was a little kid, I wanted a red bicycle, then skates, then a high grade in English, and when I couldn't find friends around whom I felt comfortable, I dreamed of finding them with all my power. Yes, I found them. The best friends in the world.
I still have many dreams, but in my country since 2020, when thousands of boys a little older than myself were killed and most of my homeland was occupied, having dreams has become an extravagance Now is the time of goals where I live Tangible goals, scientific goals that give wings to fly not only to me, but also to my small country. Yes, I am a small drop in my country, but I know that a drop is sometimes worth an ocean.
I want and strive to study well. I want to apply what I learn. I may not be able to create, for example, a coffee machine, but maybe I can create something that prevents my enemy from using the coffee machine he has created. Maybe I'll write a book that will help my fellow citizens get back our lost lands without a fight, maybe I'll become a good doctor and heal my enemy's son, and he'll decide that he doesn't want to be my enemy anymore These are thoughts that make a dream a goal, one of which I will definitely commit to and achieve. Because I am sure that dreams have the ability to come true and one should dream very carefully.
why do we dream?
The science behind dreams
Have you ever thought about why we dream at night?
Arjin Acar
Well the answer is a bit more than just an explanatory sentence. Actually scientists still don’t have a clear reason behind why our brain dreams, there are different theories that try to find an explanation. Some of them are purely psychological and some of them purely biological. Let’s see some popular theories and maybe you will make your mind about the answer to the question, “Why do we dream?”
Theory 1
“Yes, Freud also has an idea about this.”
The first theory comes from our good old friend Freud who somehow has an opinion on everything. Freud thinks that dreams represent unconscious desires and thoughts and motivations. Even though by modern psychology this theory has not been found reliable, research suggests that there is a dream rebound effect in which a suppression of a thought tends to result in dreaming about it.
Theory 3
“Can dreams help me pass the IB?”
According to another theory the purpose of dreams is to help us solve our problems. Research shows that dreaming promotes creative thinking and many people claim to have their “aha!” moments in their dreams. Dreams give inspiration consciously or subconsciously to the person having them. This is caused by the ability to make unexpected connections between memories and ideas while dreaming that creates a fertile ground for creativity.
Theory 2
“Everything always has to be connected to REM sleep.”
Activation-synthesis model of dreaming (proposed by J. Allan Hobson and Robert McCarley) claims that the circuits in the brain get activated in REM sleep. This triggers the amygdala and hippocampus to create electrical impulses. Random thoughts, images, and memories are created as a result of the theory and our brain pulls together various images and memory pieces to make a cohesive sense of it.
Theory 4
“Dreams are our guardian angels.”
According to a more evolutionary approach, dreams prepare ourselves to confront dangers in the real world. The dream acts like a social simulation which provides the dreamer a safe environment to practice survival skills. While dreaming, through the fight or flight instincts, we build mental capability for handling threatening scenarios like running from a murderer, jumping from a cliff, being kidnapped, forgetting to take an exam etc.
You have just read four different theories that try to explain why we dream. In reality, the reason behind our dreams might be one of these theories, some other theory, or a mixture of some. Who knows, maybe you will be one of the scientists who will discover the real reason behind dreaming, until that day choose your theory and have sweet dreams :)
