The Ballad Of Emmett Till By Ifa Bayeza Directed by Talvin Wilks October 7 – November 20, 2022 A decade in the making, The Till Trilogy is a three-play cycle by the award-winning playwright Ifa Bayeza, honoring the life, death, and legacy of Emmett Till. Using music, poetry, and imagination to reflect on a turning point in American history, the productions were staged simultaneously, in a rotating repertory, for the very first time, with 10 actors playing 75 characters. The first play of the Trilogy, The Ballad of Emmett Till, recounts the last two weeks of Emmett Till’s life on his journey from Chicago to Money, Mississippi, in 1955. Audiences met a 14 year old boy with boisterous energy and boundless charm whose fateful encounter with Caroline Bryant changed his life and our country forever.

Douglas February 1 – 26, 2023 Eric, a classical pianist, and Bilal, a jazz musician, are brothers by blood, united through a love of music but separated by prison bars. When Bilal’s trial reveals hidden secrets and unexpected truths, the young men are forced to ask whether their love, and music, can withstand betrayal. Inspired by true events, award-winning playwright and breakbeat poet Idris Goodwin’s moving play with music offered audiences the opportunity to reflect on faith, family, and politics with equal parts imagination and intensity. Unseen By Mona Mansour Directed by Johanna Gruenhut March 30 – April 23, 2023 American conflict photographer Mia wakes up in her ex-girlfriend’s Istanbul apartment and doesn’t recall how she got there, although the contents of her camera might. A cross-cultural, timeshifting journey ensues as Mia pieces together the details of her past and wrestles with the costs of her profession. Our production of Unseen welcomed playwright Mona Mansour back to DC following Mosaic’s acclaimed debut production of The Vagrant Trilogy, which was produced Off-Broadway by The Public Theater in April 2022.

This true story, based upon the actual comedy sketches, songs, and jokes of the Jewish and German cabaret stars who were forced to perform at concentration camps or die, amplified the need for justice in the face of rising antisemitism. Sold out performances took place at the Edlavitch DC Jewish Cultural Center with post-show discussions led by US Holocaust Memorial Museum staff. Inspired by the forced distancing of the pandemic and created while the artists were living half a world apart, this innovative collaboration and presentation spanned both continents and mediums—with the play’s action taking place simultaneously in two countries during a global live performance-meets-digital theater event made specifically for this moment.
