Welcome , and thank you for being here.
As we close our Ensemble season with Hoods Uncloaked, I’m holding a deep sense of gratitude—and a quiet kind of awe. What you’re about to experience is the result of months of questioning, creating, listening, and building—together.
This season, we’ve been exploring stories that shape us. And this piece centers a question that feels both timeless and urgent: When the law protects the powerful, how do the powerless seek justice?
That question didn’t come from a script. It came from our young artists. From their lived experiences, their observations, and their courage to sit with complexity.
But they didn’t stop there.
As they helped build this work, they wove in deeper questions— about place, about belonging, about what it means to love where you come from. About what we owe to our communities—and to each other. What does it mean to be responsible for one another? To show up, to protect, to challenge, to care? How do we hold both pride and accountability for the places that shape us?
Hoods Uncloaked was devised from the ground up—with young people shaping the story arc, contributing to the music, and making bold creative choices about how this world would come to life. What you’ll see is the result of their thinking. Their voice and a shared vision.
This work is also held by a powerful community of collaborators. We are honored to continue our partnership with guest director and playwright Shavonne Coleman, whose guidance continues to challenge and elevate this process. We are grateful to House of Jit, Cornell Batie, Jamiliah Minter, and Olivia Perry for helping shape the movement language of this piece—bringing energy, precision, and deep cultural roots into the work.
You’ll feel that influence throughout the performance—especially in the music. Our young artists chose to center techno, a sound born right here in Detroit. A sound that is innovative, expansive, and unapologetically rooted in place. A sound that reminds us that creativity can entertain while pushing boundaries, building culture, and telling stories in ways words alone cannot.
Detroit is a city that knows how to create.
The birthplace of Motown.
The home of techno.
The engine of the automobile industry.
A UNESCO City of Design—and the only one in the United States.
Creativity lives here. It always has.
And that matters—because creativity is not a luxury. It is how we make meaning. How we imagine new futures. How we stay connected—to ourselves, to our communities, and to each other.
This experience is a reminder that we must keep creating. We must keep telling stories. We must keep sharing brave space for young people to speak—and for all of us to listen.
Because when young people are given the tools, the trust, and the platform, they lead with creative brilliance. They question. They care deeply. They hold mirrors up to the world and invite us to see more clearly.
So thank you for being part of this moment. For showing up. For witnessing. For holding space.
My hope is that something from this performance stays with you—a question about justice, a reflection on your own sense of place, a renewed commitment to community, a spark of creativity. Something that moves with you beyond this room.
Because the stories that shape us don’t end here. They live on—in how we see each other, how we show up, and how we choose to build what comes next.

The writer and Director, Shavonne Coleman, inspired by Afro-futurism began our process by having the young artist imagine Detroit in the future, both the good and the bad in 10 years, 2036 and 100 years 2136. This play is Detroit-futurism inspired by the past, dreaming of the future and investigating what needs to be done in the present. “During one rehearsal, a young artist reflecting on the walkouts happening at schools across the country wondered, “…why do kids have to do what adults should be doing?’”Bringing to my attention that teens often don’t see what adults are doing in adult spaces just like adults don’t see what teens are doing to organize in teen spaces— so why not explore what young people organizing looks and feels like. Influenced by elders, energized by peers.

FAST FACTS FOR FIRST TIMERS
For 32 years, Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit has created pathways to equity and opportunity through the arts. Our work prepares youth to excel on stage and in life, developing next generation leaders through transformative arts experiences.
Accessibility is a priority. We offer low to no-cost arts and leadership training, mentorship and academic support, digital resources, and ticket discount programs for schools and youth.
Our impact is measurable: 95% of ensemble members graduate high school on time and pursue college education, with a 74% college persistence rate since 2019. Our alumni are changing the world as lawyers, educators, entrepreneurs, Tony and Grammy winners, engineers, playwrights, and community leaders.
Looking ahead, we remain committed to reflecting Detroit’s unique spirit in our work. We will continue to foster youth agency, co-creating safe and brave spaces for young individuals to build the skills, tenacity, and networks they need to thrive through adulthood.
