welcome to Harlem Renaissance Remixed: Mosaic in Concert.

Thank you for joining us to honor those whose lives served as blueprints for modern music, art, literature, and performance. Through research, curiosity, and creativity, I am grateful for the opportunity to explore and highlight the lasting impact of the Harlem Renaissance. I also extend my deepest thanks to the extraordinary young artists whose dedication brings this vision to life. May we never forget the vital role Black artists have played in shaping American culture.

This tribute examines the power of influence and the evolution of popular music. At a time when Black Americans were denied respect and recognition, they created art that could not be ignored. From the elegance of dandyism to bold musical and literary expression, they reclaimed their voice and opened paths that continue to shape generations. We trace the roots of jazz in improvisation, syncopation, and call-and-response; feel the emotional storytelling of the blues; and witness how these forms continue to shape modern R&B, rap, and neo-soul.

For every artist inspired by Quincy Jones or Toni Morrison, there stood a Duke Ellington or a Zora Neale Hurston—living examples of what is possible when doors are opened. We celebrate the bravery of Billie Holiday, the showmanship of Cab Calloway, and countless others. Their artistic expression, honesty, and fearless critique paved the way for today’s artists to speak freely, explore new possibilities, and challenge the notion of what is “allowed.”

Thank you to Mosaic Youth Theatre for entrusting me with such a meaningful project. And to you, our audience: thank you for giving us the gift of your time and attention. Your presence is a testament to the way art can inspire, uplift, and build community. My hope is that tonight you not only enjoy the performance but also leave with a deeper understanding of why it is so important to honor and remember history.

FAST FACTS FOR FIRST TIMERS

For 32 years, Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit has created pathways to equity and opportunity through the arts. Our work prepares youth to excel on stage and in life, developing next generation leaders through transformative arts experiences.

Accessibility is a priority. We offer low to no-cost arts and leadership training, mentorship and academic support, digital resources, and ticket discount programs for schools and youth.

Our impact is measurable: 95% of ensemble members graduate high school on time and pursue college education, with a 74% college persistence rate since 2019. Our alumni are changing the world as lawyers, educators, entrepreneurs, Tony and Grammy winners, engineers, playwrights, and community leaders.

Looking ahead, we remain committed to reflecting Detroit’s unique spirit in our work. We will continue to foster youth agency, co-creating safe and brave spaces for young individuals to build the skills, tenacity, and networks they need to thrive through adulthood.
