As we welcome in the new year, let me also wish you a makahiki hau ‘oli nö (Happy New Year)!
Ka niu pe‘ahi kanaka o Helumoa is a Hawaiian ‘ōlelo no‘eau, or proverb, that welcomes you to Royal Hawaiian Center here on the historic lands of Helumoa. Locks of Love Cartier’s iconic LOVE collection
From top: An assortment of Love bracelets adorn a woman's wrist; the new Love collection bracelet in white gold; and the Love ring in pink gold and diamonds.

SINCE ITS introduction in 1969, Cartier’s Love bracelets have been permanently locked tight on to its clients’ and loved ones’ wrists. Created by late Italian jewelry designer Aldo Cipullo, the Love collection—which now includes rings, pendants, earrings and cufflinks—has gained popularity for its modern minimalist style, screw motifs and everlasting symbol of love. High-profile celebrity couples, such as Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton and Ali MacGraw and Steve McQueen, were once spotted donning the then-new Cartier line, along with many notable New York residents. Lovers around the world soon gravitated towards the unique jewelry piece, happily linking and locking its two C-shaped halves—with the help of a miniature screwdriver—on to their significant others’ wrists. Today, anyone can don a Love bracelet; it’s no longer just for couples. What’s alluring about the collection is that it can be for a relative, a friend, a graduation gift or a treat-yourself indulgence. Its unisex design, with both feminine and masculine features, is one of the key reasons to the collection’s success. Any excuse to bestow the gift of love is a reason to gift a piece from the Cartier Love collection. Whether you desire something classic for yourself or a piece to express your enduring love for someone, Cartier’s Love collection is a perfect fit no matter your preference or occasion. Cartier’s new Love collection debuts in February 2017. The boutique is located in Building A, Level 1. For more information, go to cartier.com or call 808.922.7555

Evolved Elegance Jimmy Choo's Spring Summer 2017 collection highlights elements of nature BY KRISTEN NEMOTO
INSPIRED BY the artistic styles of the late Frida Kahlo and David Bowie, and Swiss artists Gerda Steiner’s and Jorg Lenzlinger’s Falling Gardens immersive botanical installation in Venice’s 17th-century church San Staë, Sandra Choi was mesmerized when she came up with this season’s imaginative vision. “I started by thinking about these staggeringly beautiful phenomena of nature—mind-bogglingly gorgeous things—whose only designer is evolution,” said Choi, Jimmy Choo’s creative director, in a released statement. “The 21st century has become so fast-paced we often forget to be still enough to look around and marvel at the wonders we co-exist with.” From this concept came a combination of what Choi describes as “magnificent handiwork, bold experiments

in form, and powerfully potent color and decoration.” The results: Stiletto heels are broadened to give them some weight and kick to the otherwise usual skinny heel; hand-stitched iris petals adorn the sides of sandals to create a fun yet sculpted shape; and metallic designs play ode to nature’s structural lines and graceful silhouettes. The season’s designs, in the end, went through a thoughtful and lovely array of decorative designs and a fusion of materials. “I considered the sensibility it takes to be attuned to this kind of beauty,” Choi noted. “What it takes to have the perspective both to see it, and in a way also to be it.” Jimmy Choo is located in Building C, level 1. Eia Hawai‘i, a he moku, a he kanaka. He kanaka Hawai‘i ē. He kanaka Hawai‘i. He kama na Kahiki. These are the opening lines to the celebratory chant, Eia Hawai‘i, intoned by Kamahualele upon spotting Hawai‘i Island on a voyage from Tahiti to Hawai‘i; an arduous journey of approximately 2,300 nautical miles. Kamahualele is the foster son of ali‘i (chief ), Mō‘ikeha, and navigated Mō‘ikeha’s wa‘a kaulua (double-hulled) canoe northward in the Pacific Ocean during what was the high Middle Ages of Europe during the 12th century. the celestial paths of the sun, moon and stars, and the directional passage of swells and other nature-telling signs—Kamahualele successfully traversed Kanaloa’s expanse (Kanaloa is one of four major Hawaiian deities, and is lord of the ocean, long-distance voyaging and healing). Eia Hawai‘i is Kamahualele’s appeal to his ali‘i to

Mō’ikeha’s ancient expedition sets the stage for an even grander feat in 2017 when the wa‘a kaulua, Hōkūle’a, returns from its maiden, multi-year worldwide voyage. The thrilling finale to this unprecedented journey will be shared in
our Fall issue due out in August. Our Summer issue, which will debut in May will delve deeper into Hōkūle‘a’s 40-year history. Our Winter—and final—issue for 2017 will arrive in November during the Hawaiian New Year, which will conclude the anthology of articles dedicated to Hōkūle‘a; necessary keepsakes for maritime enthusiasts and lovers of all things Hawaiian. 2017 will reveal the connection among the Polynesian Voyaging Society, Hōkūle‘a, Kamehameha Schools, the legacy of Princess Bernice Pauahi and Royal Hawaiian Center, telling a compelling story that spans 185 years. In other words, stay tuned. In 1976, during what is now recognized as the second Hawaiian Renaissance, the newly christened Hōkūle‘a hoisted her sails for her maiden voyage. The jubilee surrounding her sea launch lived up to the meaning of her name —Star R OYAL H AWAI I AN C EN TER

of Gladness. Under the tutelage of master navigator, Mau Piailug, from the Carolinian atoll of Satawal, Micronesia, this voyage would rekindle the long-standing debate of how the islands of the Pacific Ocean were inhabited. Norwegian explorer, Thor Heyerdahl, contributed to the debate in 1947 with his Kon-Tiki raft expedition. After 101 days at sea, Kon-Tiki ran aground on the reefs of the Tuamotu Islands having set sail from Callao, Peru. Heyerdahl deemed it a success.

Hōkūle‘a’s contribution was founded under a different pretense: to empirically prove that the peoples of the Pacific Ocean were bona fide seafarers who navigated to their destination. Thirty-four days after setting sail from Maui, Hōkūle‘a, coasted into Papa‘ete, Tahiti, greeted by the majority of the island’s people. While the bow of the ship lay nestled on the welcoming sands, its stern slowly dipped lower in the water as gleeful children climbed aboard, overtaken by the joyous celebration of Hōkūle‘a’s arrival. The world deemed it a success. For Hōkūle‘a, there would be 10 more major voy-

ages before the greatest undertaking of this humble vessel. In the wake of this momentous journey, a revival took place in the hearts and minds of people all across the great ocean. In Hawai‘i, the triumphant 1976 Tahiti voyage served as a fiery spark to kānaka (Hawaiians) to ho‘olako Hawai‘i, to enrich ourselves by rediscovering our native selves; and to equip ourselves with our ‘ike kūpuna, our ancestral knowledge, to better meet the challenges that lay ahead. After sailing around the planet for four years, Hōkūle‘a will ho‘i hou (return again) to Hawai‘i via Tahiti in what is now the 21st century; nine centuries after Mō‘ikeha’s voyage, affirming the remarkable, longstanding tradition of wayfinding by the peoples of the Pacific Ocean. Fun Things to Do at the Center What to see and do at Royal Hawaiian Center
Be Original. Be Crazy!
Shopping centers have always been hubs for socializing. And this is certainly the case at the Royal Hawaiian Center, where visitors from around the world gather to shop, dine and learn about Hawaiian culture. As the Center offers more experiences, consumers use the environment to bond with their children, family members and friends. They take ‘ukulele and hula lessons; they learn to strand a lei; they lounge on chairs sipping coffee during a shopping break; and they laugh and talk story while walking throughout this 310,000-squarefoot, four-tiered building. Here are some of our favorite fun experiences right here at the Center.

AS SHOPPING CENTERS have been re-imagined the past decade so, too, have “food courts.” Once limited to an assemblage of standard chain vendors, these communal dining spaces have now morphed into restaurant markets. At Pā‘ina Lānai, visitors can take their palates on a globetrotting adventure, from the streets of Vietnam to the barrios of Mexico to Tokyo’s Ginza.
Oodles of Noodles Pronounced “fuh,” pho is the popular Vietnamese noodle soup known for its aromatic smell. The medley of rice, noodles and meat is accompanied by fresh vegetables and herbs, including bean sprouts, basil, mint, lime and peppers. Rip up a few leaves of herbs and sprinkle it over and squeeze a bit of lime if needed. Chopsticks in one hand and a soup spoon in the other, savor the flavors. “Chinese soup is too oily and Japanese soup is too clean,” says Pho Factory owner Krystal Giang. “Vietnamese pho is right in the middle; it’s perfect.” Pho Factory, 808.922.1888, phofactoryusa.com
Hola meets Aloha Twenty-four years ago, Mark Ellman couldn’t find good Mexican food anywhere on Maui. So the celebrity chef decided to open Maui Tacos. The idea was—and still is—to provide the flavors of Mexico with a touch of aloha. The hybrid results in such dishes as the Lāhainā Burrito, composed of charbroiled chicken or shredded beef with Maui Tacos rice, cheese and fresh guacamole; and the Maui Taco’s The Original, offering a choice of charbroiled chicken, shredded beef, barbecue pork or ground beef; and selection of pinto, black or refried beans with fresh mix greens and cheese. Each can be garnished with a host of salsas, including the Hula Heat, Pineapple Paradise, Hola Aloha, Maui Mex, Maui Firedancer and Pineapple Passion. Maui Tacos, 808.931.6111, mauitacos.com
Round of Applause Translating to “round and round” in English, kulu kulu brings its ethereal pastries to the Pā‘ina Lānai. Since opening its first Hawai‘i location in 2012, the Japanese-style pastry shop has attracted patrons with its Diamond Head puff pastry, a light, airy cream puff that possesses just the right amount of sugar. Other must-tries include the blueberry petite tarte, papaya-and-mango cake and mocheese, a delicate strawberry cheesecake covered with mochi. “We are honored to have our third store here at such a very important historical place,” says general manager Miki Ono. In addition to its cream puffs and array of signature roll cakes, this location offers soft-serve ice cream in three flavors: Maui Vanilla Bean, Kona Coffee and the “Hawaiian Twist.” kulu kulu, 808.931.0915, kulukulucake.com

Casual Classics
Burgers and pizzas remain popular mainstays BY SIMPLICIO PARAGAS PHOTOS BY STEVE CZERNIAK
Mahaloha Burger
WHILE “FOOD COURTS” have certainly evolved into fastcasual, gourmet experiences over the years, they still offer the mandatory classics: burgers and slices of pizza. Much like McDonald’s has its special secret sauce, Mahaloha Burger has its own closely guarded topping, which is made daily from scratch, according to owner Jesse Aguinaldo. “It tastes somewhere between a Russian dressing and Thousand Island,” says Aguinaldo, who opened this location in 2011 and added a second outpost in Kailua in 2015. “I call it my happy sauce.” With lines two and three deep at times, Mahaloha’s popularity is attributed to its 100-percent, grass-fed Big Island beef. The charbroiled flavor is unlike any other burger. The patties are always fresh—never frozen—and juices flow with a single bite. The double patty version is messy but well worth the extra napkins. Topped with

lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, grilled onions, cheddar cheese and the “happy sauce,” the two ground beef burgers are then sandwiched between a grilled buttered bun. “It’s a cross between a brioche and Hawaiian sweet bread,” says Aguinaldo of his specialty bun. “We probably do about 10,000 burgers a month.” As good as these burgers are with just the standard toppings, the addition of a sunny-side-up egg and slices of bacon make them even better—but messier. Add avocado to the mix and you’ve got the ultimate brunch burger. Other offerings include chicken katsu, salmon, teriyaki, blue cheese and vegetarian burgers; fish and chips; and hot dogs. Mahaloha Burger, 808.926.6500, mahalohaburger.com One of the more enduring names among national and international food courts, Sbarro is known for its classic New York-style pizza made from hand-stretched
dough. Having celebrated its 60th year in 2016, the pizzeria chain has been committed to the timeless tradition of hands-on pizza making and a fearless pursuit of fresh flavor, bringing the best of its Italian roots to the heart of Waikīkī and beyond. The company now boasts more than 800 eateries in 33 countries. “Very few brands hold the privilege of celebrating 60 years in business,” said Sbarro CEO David

Happy Moments Gather some friends and enjoy a variety of pupu and craft cocktails at the Center’s restaurants BY SIMPLICIO PARAGAS IN HAWAI‘I, pau hana is a time-honored tradition to mark the end of a workday. Yet, it’s more than just “happy hour;” it’s unplugging, and leaving work and stress behind. For Royal Hawaiian Center visitors, it marks a break from shopping or the beginning of an evening out with friends.
Dim Sum Then Some It would be hard for some aspect of dim sum not to “touch your heart,” as one of the translations of the term dim sum indicates. At Beijing Chinese Seafood Restaurant, everyone can pick a favorite from the innumerable little dishes 60
