Welcome to the NOVEMBER ISSUE Hello and welcome to our October issue.
So, it’s not even Halloween yet and already the Christmas decorations have started appearing in all the shops! What is going on? I’m not quite ready to admit Christmas is creeping up on us just yet. Hope you have all been enjoying our Indian Summer, warm and sunny days, but a little bit chilly in the mornings and evenings, my only complaint is that it can make it difficult to know what to wear each day. If like me you love Halloween go to pages 80 and 81 for a few fun buys, not just for dressing up but for the house too! And if you want to cook a nice autumn meal, turn to pages 38 and 40 for some recipe ideas that are sure to make you feel warm inside. TRIBUTE TO MR TERRY BUCKLE It is with sadness that I have to report that Mr Terry Buckle passed away on the 8th October. Terry was known to all, he set up the first community centre on Heldhaw Road and was instrumental in procuring the community centre on Lawson Place, I served with Terry as councillor for Moreton Hall. Terry worked very hard as councillor, your problem was his and he got it sorted. He became Mayor in 2013 and again he could not do enough, visiting care homes, schools and many other civic engagements. As a family man Terry was devoted to both his wife Pam and family, he raised four children as well as fostering over 60 young vulnerable children, giving them a chance in life. Thank you Terry for your service, it has been an honour to have known you as a friend and colleague over the last 28 years, your duty done, rest in peace old friend. God Bless.

There is only 18 months left on the hall lease and we are desperately looking for a new committee to run the club, the club is in a good financial state, there is plenty of equipment for the children to use, so if anyone would like to come and talk to us regarding taking over we would be delighted to meet you.
DRUGS Sadly, we have a drug problem on our estate, at the AGM of the Residence Associations last week. The head of Sybil Andrews eluded to the fact that they are having problem with drugs and are working with the police to combat the problem, We are not alone in this, other estates are suffering the same or worse. County Lines as it’s named is a very hard core of London drug gangs operating outside London, they use young school children to sell their drugs. They will find a vulnerable person, move into their house and use it as an outlet for selling drugs, it’s called cocooning, Please keep an eye on your children don’t let them get caught up in this mess.
TEN ACRE FIELD I have good news and bad news, firstly we have at last got our new bench, it was delivered and installed on the 9th and very smart it is too, the 3pm dog walkers celebrated on Friday with cake and gin. Here is hoping it does not get vandalised and will remain a place for walkers to rest. Bad news is, I am inserting a letter I Received from a resident exactly as it was written “Dog Foul, The woman is tall and has four dogs with her, two on either side. One is a Dalmatian type, one a terrier, a small curly coated possibly poodle cross, finally a sable staff type. Two fouled on the field last Friday 4th October around 12.30pm” If anyone knows this lady perhaps a word would not go amiss, or she might be walking your dogs, please have a word.

You will have seen that the new Acorn Park is now open! It took a little time to let the groundworks settle, but we now have a great new facility which cost over £60k to implement, showing the commitment to invest in Moreton Hall. I’ve had some reports of damage to the equipment already, however that was sorted out quickly please respect the facility.
Bikers Against Bullying
I had the very great honour last month to attend the anti-bullying rally organised by veteran biker group “Never Surrender”. Mainly made up of ex-army, they came to support a 14 year old girl who attends Sybil Andrews and who has been the brunt of a bullying campaign. Penny, an organiser and friend of the affected family had put the group in contact. We met at Krazy Horse (thanks to Paul for their hospitality) and rode a route through to Bury Town FC, making quite a splash on the way, before a presentation in the club house! I managed to hitch a ride on the back of a trike to join the cavalcade and pretended not to be terrified. We had expected around 50 bikes, but well over 300 turned up with attendees from as far away as Liverpool and Devon, who had travelled specifically to support the event. We have a great relationship in Bury with the military and I couldn’t help but recognise that not only had these people dedicated their lives and careers to the defence of us all, they are now in retirement continuing to stand up for vulnerable citizens. There are far too many people to humbly thank, but I’ll pick out Dean, Mick and Stan as the promoters and Penny for sparking it all off. In summary, there was a clear message - bullying of anyone in our community will not be tolerated. In Dean’s words “you now have 300 aunties and uncles just a phone call away”.

Terry Buckle the first Chair of the Community Association and the driving force behind the Community Centre has died. He was a long serving Councillor for Moreton Hall Ward on St Edmundsbury Borough, Council. Mayor in 2013/2014 and a stalwart of the Moreton Hall Community. At the Annual General Meeting on the 9th October Cliff Hind was re-elected Chair and Robert Houlton-Hart was re-elected secretary of the Residents Association. Our thanks to Nick Froy Executive Head of Sybil Andrews Academy and Trenica King Principal of Sybil Andrews Academy for their informative and illustrated talk on Sybil Andrews The Future after the AGM and for answering residents’ questions. Highways and Traffic continues to be a concern to residents. With the recent cabinet reshuffle at Suffolk County Council we are now going to have to deal with the 4th Cabinet Member with responsibility for highways in almost as many years. The new road is woefully underused, yet the increase in HGV’s using Orttewell Road is very noticeable and the queues at junction 44 don’t get any smaller. West Suffolk Council has declared a climate emergency and has set up a Climate Change Task Force which is due to produce an interim report towards the end of this year with the aim of West Suffolk having zero carbon emissions by 2030. The Council has set up an Air Quality Group comprising representatives
of resident’s associations throughout the town which met recently. Ideas discussed were car sharing, Park and Ride, Electric Vehicles, reduction in the use of one-off plastics., better and use of buses. The question of introduction of fines for engine idling was mentioned and according to recent newspapers articles this is being talked about at national level. If you need to report something to West Suffolk Council like overgrown hedges, uncut grass, abandoned rubbish, full litter bins then they can be contacted at customer.services@ westsuffolk.gov.uk. THE STATE OF NATURE 2019
T
he State of Nature report was published a couple of months ago, by over 70 nature conservation and research organisations, using data from thousands of volunteer and paid surveyors. Since 1970, agriculture has become more efficient, the country’s population has increased and urban areas have expanded. Emissions of many pollutants have been reduced dramatically, although diffuse air and water pollution continues to have a severe impact on habitats and freshwaters. The 21st century so far has been warmer than the previous three centuries. Climate change is driving widespread changes in the
abundance, distribution and ecology of species across the UK, and 13% of species are threatened with extinction. In Moreton Hall, there has been dramatic change since 1970. Arable land has mostly been lost, replaced by development. Arable species such as skylark and brown hare are no more. The woods have been encapsulated into the development, as have most of the original hedgerows. Whilst the woods are being managed positively, although in very different way to the reasons they were planted, the hedges are in slow decline towards becoming urban garden hedges. There’s probably much more
flower-rich grassland here than in 1970 thanks to Woodland Ways. There’s a new mammal species which colonised in the 12990s, the muntjac deer, and many cats which enjoy catching our wild mice, voles and small birds. One positive is a huge increase in woodland area in Moreton Hall. In the early 1980s, when the estate was first dreamed of, the council insisted on large woodland belts being planted and this overarching design persisted deep into the 1990s. As a result there are more trees here than ever before. Woodland Ways next work party is at Home Covert on Sunday 10th November at 10am.

With the days now feeling cooler and the night’s drawing in it’s often seems more attractive to sit warmly indoors with a cuppa but exercise is important all year round. Exercise really helps with the self maintenance of Lymphoedema and Lipodema and also helps with your self esteem too. Plus, if its exercise with a group of friends, it’s a very sociable thing to do – exercise, laughter and may be a coffee afterwards with friends = a fabulous time! Some of those who attended LSS meetings have found going to Zumba Gold sessions really beneficial, for all the reasons above. Jo Brown runs local Zumba Gold sessions, with the motto “shake it at your pace”. Sessions cost £3.50 a class with no need to book. Unfortunately the speaker scheduled for the September meeting failed to show so we carried on with the AGM followed by a quiz that was all about flowers, some well known and some unusual. Accompanied by a buffet of savouries and fresh cream cakes the afternoon was one of enjoyment and stimulation.
As you can see Christmas cards were achieved in the October session. To make the card everyone was given a green card, a topper with a white deckled edge, an insert and an envelope. There was a choice of stamp to use of either snowmen or gingerbread men. The white card was stamped with the chosen image which was then covered in white embossing powder and heated until the black outline became more emphasised, turning shiny. These images were then coloured using Promarker pens. The topper was adhered to the green card with double sided raised pads. A sentiment was added to finish off the front of the card. The insert was cut to size, stamped with a Christmas message and taped to the inside thus finalising the card. Throughout the making of the card everyone was chatting, laughing or concentrating on what they were doing. The one thing that is good to see is everyone wanting to help each other and at the same time enjoy what they are doing.
In October the presentation gave us all an insight as to what is available for people aged 60+ and how lives can be improved. Many services and a wide range of information and advice from home adaptions to technology, to befriending to healthcare and more are available if the need arises. In November the presentation will be a continuation of a story all about life in Turkey. This will be a very expressive talk and one of passion, love and adaptation. This meeting will be on Thursday 21st November from 2pm to 4pm with the speaker presentation taking up the first hour. Both meetings include refreshments and are held in the small hall at Southgate Community Centre. There is no formal meeting in December. The coffee morning and craft session will go ahead as planned. With forthcoming occasions keeping us all occupied time is taken up however we have allowed ourselves time out in December for the group Christmas Lunch. Organising outings can prove challenging and if they do not succeed can lead to disappointment as we found out this year so fingers crossed the lunch is a real winner! 24 | NOVEMBER 2019

We took time to remember our member Doreen Cornell who sadly passed away in September. FULL PAGE FLIGHT LAB Doreen had been a member of both Moreton Hall and Cockfield WIs. Some of our members had an interesting visit recently to Wattisfield Pottery. We had an interesting tour around the workshop and then tried our hands at decorating a pot. They were fired for us and we received all our beautiful items at our October meeting. Then all the ladies at Moreton Hall WI donned their dancing shoes this month for a lesson in Zumba Gold and Seated Zumba. Our instructor Jo Brown told us how Zumba has developed since it was invented a few years ago in Columbia, and how her career has moved on from being a professional dancer to becoming a Zumba instructor. She then put us through our paces with a little help from friends Mick & Renee, Polly and myself who are seasoned Zumba Gold members of Jo’s classes.

The colder weather is no reason to stop playing or working on your game however. The winter months is a great time of year to target areas of your game that’s need some work before the next golf season starts. So with this in mind I have set out below some things you may want to apply to your own game in attempt to make next season as good as it can be for you personally. Firstly, identify strong and weak areas within your game. This should cover every aspect of play including on course strategy and mind-set. Prioritise and plan how you are going to turn these weaknesses into stronger areas. Structuring your practice and play throughout the winter will allow you work on highlighted areas, using effective drills to help assist your development. Coaches Corner – STOP DUFFING CHIP SHOTS!
This month we look at a way that you can escape those nasty winter lies around the greens and not have any DUFF chips. The traditional way to play these greenside chip shots has been to use your wedge or other iron. However, the guys at PGA Life 365 have another option for you this month, and it’s the HYBRID chip shot. We have said HYBRID chip but it could also be played with a lofted fairway wood. The reason we have used this style of club is that the increased sole size will allow you some more forgiveness from these nasty winter lies. SET UP: This is all about getting you in a neutral position to allow you to execute this shot to the best of your ability. We are looking for you to have the BALL CENTRED in a NARROWED STANCE, and feeling as though you are standing TALLER AT ADDRESS.

CHEESY BONFIRE BREAD Best eaten fresh, this savoury bread can also be made ahead and frozen – perfect for Bonfire Night
INGREDIENTS: 200g wholemeal flour 200g plain flour, plus extra for dusting 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda Bicarbonate of soda 2 tsp cream of tartar 1 tsp salt 1 tsp caster sugar 25g butter, melted 300ml milk, at room temperature 175g cheddar, coarsely grated 3 tbsp pumpkinseeds 85g ready-roasted pepper from a jar, drained and chopped

METHOD: Heat oven to 190C/170C fan/gas 5. Sift the dry ingredients into a large bowl and make a large well in the middle. Combine the melted butter and milk, then pour into the well. Mix to a soft dough. Dust the work surface with flour. Add most of the cheddar, 2 tbsp of the pumpkin seeds and the chopped peppers to the dough. Gently knead to combine on the floured surface. Divide into eight lumps and shape into rough rounds two fingerwidths deep. Put the pieces side by side on a floured baking sheet, scatter the remaining cheddar and pumpkin seeds over the top and bake for 30 mins until golden brown and the cheese is bubbling. Cool on a wire rack and eat while warm. Can be frozen at this point. To reheat, wrap the bread tightly in foil and bake at 200C/180C fan/gas 6 for about 30 mins.

APPLE PUDDING CAKE
INGREDIENTS: 250g plain flour 200g caster sugar 2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 1/2 dessertspoons ground cinnamon 225ml milk 350g dark brown soft sugar 325ml water 30g butter 100g chopped peeled apples 60g chopped walnuts
METHOD: Preheat oven to 180 C / Gas 4. Grease the bottom of a 23cm square baking dish. In a large bowl, mix together the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and cinnamon. Make a well in the centre and pour in the milk. Mix well and pour into prepared tin. In a saucepan, combine brown sugar, water and butter. Bring to the boil and pour over mixture in the tin. Sprinkle top with nuts and chopped apples. Bake in the preheated oven for 35 to 40 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the centre of the pudding comes out clean. Serve warm. Tip: The walnuts are optional, or you can use a different nut if desired. Serve as is or with custard.

INGREDIENTS:
For the pastry 400g plain flour 1 tbsp English mustard powder 100g lard 100g butter 2 eggs, beaten (1 for the pastry and 1 for egg wash) For the filling 1kg braising steak such as brisket or skirt, cut into chunks, any sinew and fatty bits discarded 50g plain flour 1 tbsp English mustard powder 3 tbsp rapeseed or vegetable oil 250g bacon lardons 2 carrots, cut into small chunks 2 onions, chopped 2 bay leaves 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce 1 tbsp tomato purée 600ml beef stock 6 thyme sprigs 150g strong crumbly blue cheese, such as stilton 1 piece marrowbone, about 10cm depending on the depth of your pie dish (optional)
METHOD: First, make the pastry. Put the flour, mustard powder, ½ tsp salt, the lard and butter in a food processor and pulse until combined. Add 1 egg and pulse again. Add 1 tbsp cold water, if needed, until it forms a short pastry. Knead quickly into a ball, then wrap and chill in the fridge for at least 30 mins. Can be made three days ahead or frozen for two months. Season the steak generously and toss with the flour and mustard powder. Heat half the oil in a large pan. Brown the meat in a few batches, adding more oil as you need to and making sure you don’t overcrowd the pan. Turn the meat only when the underside has a nice dark crust. Transfer the chunks to a plate as you go. Add the bacon to the pan and fry until beginning to crisp. Tip in the carrots, onions and bay leaves and cook for another few mins until the veg is soft. Stir in the Worcestershire sauce and tomato purée for 1 min, scraping the tasty bits from the bottom of the pan, then add the stock, thyme and browned beef. Season, cover the pan and simmer gently for 2½ hrs, stirring now and again to prevent the sauce from sticking, until the beef is tender. Remove the lid for the last 30 mins to thicken the sauce. Alternatively, braise in the oven at 160C/140C fan/gas 3 for the same amount of time. Leave to cool. Can be chilled for up to three days, or frozen for two months. Transfer the beef to a pie dish and crumble the cheese over the top. Place the marrowbone in the centre, nestling it into the meat. Alternatively, use a pie funnel or piping nozzle. Roll out the pastry on a floured worktop until large enough to cover the pie and about ½cm thick. Brush the remaining beaten egg over the edges of the pie dish, drape the pastry over, trim the excess and pinch around the edge to seal. Cut a hole for the marrowbone or pie funnel to poke through, and brush the top all over with beaten egg. Use the pastry trimmings to decorate the pie however you like. Chill for about 30 mins while you heat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. If you have any beaten egg left, give the pie a final brush for extra glossiness. Bake for 45-50 mins until the pastry is deep golden.

We look at lifestyle, physical health, stress levels, home and work environment, sleep habits, history and goals. By examining everything going on in your life, it is easier to get a picture of who you are, what is working for you, what is not and what you really need. Once or twice a year it’s worth mapping out your life to see how things are progressing. Are there simple changes you can make to make life easier? Look at the different elements of who you are and what you do, draw or write down the areas of your life that matter most. Prioritise that list of what you would like to change and work your way through. It is a good idea to set a realistic completion date for each one. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself or try to do too much at once. The idea is to relax and destress, be kinder to yourself and make life easier Humans are meant to be happy and healthy, it is our natural state. We are generally, calm, caring people when obstacles are taken away. Happy is a lovely way to live; it requires some effort but is achievable by everyone. And you deserve it! Rougham Control Tower Aviation Museum As The Nights Draw In… With the summer season behind us, three things spring to mind. Firstly what have we over the next few months? Tuesday 26th November Bob Archer (photographer and journalist) presents a slide show on USAAF aircraft of World War 2. £5.00 entry will include food (chilli or soup). Sybil Andrews students benefit from new teaching block Students at Sybil Andrews Academy have begun benefitting from a newly opened teaching block. The Bury St Edmunds secondary school has officially opened its third education block which will be primarily used by music and drama students as well as enhancing existing provision for SEND students.
“The students love their new space while the social skills they learn in music and drama, confidence-building and creative skills for example, are then transferred into other subjects.” The new education blo ck was again overseen by Concertus Design and Property Consultants who have managed the building of the school since it opened three years ago.
Trenica King, headteacher, said she was delighted with the new facility which has opened as the school increases its capacity to around 700 students.
Charles Coulson, associate at Concertus, said: “We wanted it to be consistent with the other two buildings while also having some subtle differences.
She said: “It is wonderful to have this amazing new space to inspire our music and drama students.
“We have worked with the school to create this university-style setting and it is great to see the building fully opened and being used so enthusiastically by students and staff.”

The AGM was held in September with a delicious buffet meal followed by an interesting talk by Martyn Taylor who showed us photos of features and sights we may have missed seeing in Bury St Edmunds along with their history. Jen Shuttleworth, the outgoing chairman then announced that her gift to charity following her two year’s service was going to Medical Detection Dogs. Norma Howells then spoke about this amazing organisation and it’s brilliant work. The next meeting of the flower club is on Wednesday 16th October at 7.30pm and visitors are welcome to attend. ST EDMUNDSBURY GARDENERS’ SOCIETY Bringing people ‘who love gardening’ together The presentation given at the September meeting was all about ‘Garden Birdlife’. Members and guests learnt about the fascinating work that goes on at the British Trust for Ornithology. The data that they collect and analyse reveals so much about our native birdlife. There was considerable information as to how birds can be attracted to our gardens. Gardens are of value to wildlife and different species of bird that visit are able to utilise the number of resources they contain i.e. food, feeders, water, shelter, places to breed, plants. Gardens develop and change over time and this is why gardening is an absorbing and pleasurable past time. Even if you have an established garden being mindful of wildlife you can enhance it and make it more favourable to attract these visitors.
The speaker Jamey Redway chatted comfortably about her passion for birdlife and indeed all wildlife, along with her own personal observations of garden birds. It was encouraging for gardeners to know that the wonderful birdlife that gives so much pleasure is under the watchful eye of the BTO and hopefully in safe hands for future generations to enjoy. Saying that there is still much to offer in your own garden to be able to play a small part in this. The next meeting at the Quaker Meeting House is on Tuesday 26th November at 7.30pm and the presentation will be on Candle Making. for Remebrance Day. I made some of these last year for Bury In Bloom and they are pictured on one of the bollards in the town. I wonder if you can spot it? YOU WILL NEED:
Red A4 paper, a green paper straw, brass split pin, hole punch, pinwheel poppy template, black sharpie pen.
n Cut out the template onto your red paper. There are lots available online if you search. n Punch a hole in the top corner of each ‘petal’ where indicated with a dot n Pierce the centre of the paper with the split pin and then feed over each corner petal until you have done all 4 n Pierce the pin through the top of the paper straw n Fold the split pin back on itself once it’s through the straw. n Colour the brass pin with a black sharpie or stick a black button over it with glue. n Blow the corner of a petal and watch it spin. n Try using a red plastic wallet cut up to put it outside in the wind or use felt and make a broch to wear. What to do in your garden this November.. With the arrival of November a lot of colour has disappeared from the garden. Trees have largely shed their leaves, the lawn has almost stopped growing and most perennials become dormant. However this is an opportunity for the gardener to plan and prepare for next year. You can also clean your tools and tidy the shed. Spread any compost you may have available. There is more opportunity to see the birdlife in your garden so encourage this with by stocking bird feeders and filling a bird bath. A garden wildlife camera fixed to a tree near a feeder can provide some interesting videos and photos and is worth considering as a present.
General Maintenance l Lawns enter a state of dormancy when temperatures fall below 6c (43f). It is a good time to aerate your lawn by putting a fork into at intervals all over. Keep the leaves off by raking up or mowing them up. l Create compost bins for collecting fallen leaves and dead plant material using old pallets. l Raise pots off the ground for the winter by using bricks or ‘pot feet’, to prevent waterlogging.
Flower Garden l There is still time to plant up your containers and borders with Spring flowering bulbs such as daffodils and tulips. l Last chance to plant out winter bedding plants such as wallflowers, Bellis, forget-me-nots, Primula, winter pansies (viola). l From now until early winter is a good time to prune roses especially climbing roses. This is a general prune reducing the size of the shrub by about a third to prevent wind rock. Try to gather up the fallen rose leaves as much as you can as this will help to prevent black spot infection getting any worse.
l Primulas, Pansies and violas will make an attractive display in a hanging basket or container and can be set out now. l Now is the time to dig up your dahlia bulbs for storage over winter in a dry, frost free place. Gently remove most of the dirt from the tubers cut back all of the growth and then keep somewhere dry upside down so any moisture drains from the centre of the tubers. Remove further dirt once the plant has dried in a further couple of weeks and keep in a little compost or covered with newspaper. wintering.

Off-Payroll Working Tax Rules Change Controversial changes to off-payroll working tax rules are currently scheduled for next April but will these changes now be introduced asks Philip Peters. As our economy is facing the uncertainties of both Brexit and possibly an election, will the government really still wish to restrict the free movement of high level workers in the UK economy? With a budget expected sometime in the Autumn, the Chancellor might postpone these changes for a year or even totally cancel them. We have asked the question ‘are you ready?’ regularly in our newsletters, magazine contributions, advertising and on our website to help prepare readers for many changes to the taxation system. The same phrase can be repeated because readers, particularly knowledgebased contractors working through their own personal service companies, should be familiar with the changes due in April 2020 to ‘off-payroll working’ tax rules. These are being made across the private sector as part of the government’s general strategy over recent years to eliminate tax avoidance, tax evasion, and in this case, tax planning. They follow the steps introduced in April 2017 across the public sector, to strengthen existing IR35 legislation and to increase the tax collected from those who HM Revenue & Customs consider to be ‘disguised employees’. This legislation will, effectively, tax these workers as if they had been engaged directly by the end client under normal PAYE rules and will stop them saving tax by: • • • • •
Taking most of their remuneration as dividends, Shifting income remuneration to a lower tax rate spouse, Leaving profits in the company, Claiming tax relief on many extra expenses, Taxing profits as capital repayments upon company dissolution or liquidation.

I
t was around 3 weeks ago that Chicken Pox started doing the rounds at school. So, it was with some relief that my daughter finally came out in spots last week. It’s good to ‘get it out of the way’, so they say. For a few minutes she was so pleased, almost proud, to show us her spots and have us confirm the diagnosis. When we pointed out this would mean she would miss her friends birthday party she had been so looking forward to, she was slightly less happy. Poor girl. For us, as parents, it was the logistics of it that caused us the initial headache. No school for the week and childcare predicaments to resolve. It was pretty selfish of her not to combine this with halfterm, when one of us would be about all week anyway, to be honest.

Luckily her siblings had already done ‘the Pox’. One was a tiny baby and one when they were about 3… no idea which one? It’s all a big sleep deprived blur in the foggy part of my memory banks to be honest. The novelty rapidly wore off. As the first day or two passed the spots worsened. Appearing in some very uncomfortable places. The ones by her eye and in her ear were particularly annoying, but, with the help of some regular doses of Piriton, she bravely ploughed through. There is a theory oats help to relieve the itching, so it was with great amusement she bathed with some homemade oat bombs - old socks stuffed with porridge oats. If nothing else it distracted her for a bit. By the middle of the week the discomfort receded and it became more of a case of
boredom. I have always been keen to get out of the house with the kids. Just a trip to the park or a walk around Home Bargains, anything to get out for an hour. However, she was still in quarantine, so these were not options. We played a few games, did some Lego, lots of reading and even resorted to jigsaws (which she loves - but I find utterly pointless). It was exhausting, for me (and my wife) at least. It has only been a couple of years since we spent that long alone with her every day. The demands of a 5 year old are perhaps more energy zapping than that of a 3 year old? Or maybe we are just no longer used to it? The one to one time was of course special, but boy will we be pleased for a return to normality. But wait - it’s halfterm now isn’t it?!

Camp Tails Doggy Daycare is fast approaching their 3-year anniversary after recently becoming independent and having a huge exciting rebrand. We caught up with Managing Director Jon to find out about what must be the happiest place around... What’s a typical day at Camp Tails?
Lots of fun! The dogs get dropped off first thing in the morning, there’s lots of hello’s and excitement followed by some free play with an assortment of toys. Once all the dogs have arrived, we will sometimes do some scheduled games or brain activities that takes us to lunch. We then have a little rest and cuddle time followed by an afternoon of more free play. We often mix things up with some themed games at special times of the year. If you want some enjoyment in your day we recommend checking out our Instagram stories for some cute videos and action of what we do!
Who tends to use a dog day care?
Anyone really, from those not wanting to leave their dog at home whilst they are at work, to those who want to give them a play day treat but more often than not its to aide and improve their dogs social skills which we have become well known for in the local community.
Do all the dogs play together?
Yes, but we do have zones for different dogs too as well as a defined puppy area. We actively encourage and teach the dogs all to get along and we have some smaller breeds that absolutely love the big pooches so we help them to play safely! 70 | NOVEMBER 2019
How many dogs do you care for?
We currently have between 45 and 60 dogs a day, all happily playing and socialising. That’s a lot of dogs – we must be crazy? Surprisingly to most, no. It’s a controlled environment designed to stimulate and enrich the dog’s lives so we provide everything they need. Most importantly they are supervised at all times by trained dedicated Camp Councillors who are there purely for the dog’s enjoyment and safety! They love their Aunties and Uncles!
What else do you do?
We have Bi-monthly puppy parties that are a great introduction into what we do and at the same time an opportunity for us to help new owners with the first steps of puppy ownership. As we continue to grow we have some exciting projects lined up so watch this space! Camp Tails provides a safe custom-built facility where your dog can learn, socialise and have fun with other likeminded dogs. All off lead and unkenneled with loads of positive reinforcement. All dogs need to have an assessment prior to attending that is completely free with no obligation to determine if it’s the right option for your canine pal.

MORETON HALL Thank you all so much for your great kindness over our Harvest Food Bank appeal a big thank you to for Sebert wood school for supporting it so generously. A large number of bags have gone to the Store house and more bags are still coming in. Thank you all for supporting our Light Station on 31st October. It was great to see so many children come for the Goodie bags. It was also good to meet their parents and serve hot chocolate. We really hope you enjoyed it and as it proved to be successful, we hope to do it again next year. Autumn is very much the season of remembrance. We honour all those who laid down their lives in two world wars and many conflicts since then. We also remember those injured by war, who need our care and support every day. Please join us at church for our own remembrance service. We continue to remember those less fortunate than ourselves, November begins we will be running another major Shoebox campaign. Shoeboxes are freely available for you to pick up from the church and then fill them and return them

to us during office hours. When you collect your box you will also receive a leaflet explaining what is suitable for you to put in it. We are going to launch this month with a special Shoebox Family Service on 3rd November and then complete our Shoebox campaign on Sunday 24th November when we will celebrate all the Shoeboxes we have collected. Last year we did in excess of 700 and I hope we can improve on that this year. The Shoeboxes go all over the world, South America, Africa, Eastern Europe, Asian sub continent, and beyond. They go to children and young people in deprived areas who will not have any sort of Christmas unless they receive a Shoebox. What will only take a few pounds for us to fill, can mean a great deal to them there. The main impact of your gift is not necessarily the contents of the box but for the young people themselves is the fact that they know they are not forgotten. In places of grinding poverty, often with single or no parent families, haunted by the fear of violence, civil war and AIDS, Shoeboxes make a real difference. Your Shoebox means that not only does
somebody know about their plight, but somebody cares, and cares enough to do something about it no matter how small it might be. This simple acts gives them both joy and hope. The reason why we do remember is because at the heart of Christianity is the call to remember. Jesus calls us to remember him at the communion. We remember that Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection at Easter were for us. At Christmas while we might need a little reminder Jesus is at the centre of it all. For the real point of all these great events is Jesus never forgets us. He remembered us when we were cut off from him by sin. He remembered us when he died on the cross as he promised the thief. Our hope is he will remember us on the day of resurrection. So as we remember others so we help ourselves to remember Jesus and his great love for us all.

SURREY COUNTY CRICKET CLUB HAVE SIGNED YOUNG LEFTARM SPINNER DANIEL MORIARTY ON A TWO-YEAR DEAL. Bury St Edmunds Cricket Cub are thrilled that Daniel Moriarty has secured a two year contract with Surrey, credit goes to Paul Whittaker and Sean Park who took the decision to bring Daniel and Justin Broad over from South Africa, as Dan has a UK passport the transition is easier as he qualifies for England. Speaking after agreeing his first professional contract, Moriarty said: “I’m very proud and honoured to have been offered a contract with one of the most prestigious counties in the game. “I really enjoyed my time with the 2nd XI earlier this year and I’m now looking forward to getting stuck in at The Kia Oval and pushing for a place in the first team throughout the next two seasons.”
Broad was the 2nd highest run scorer with an excellent 936 runs scored in total at over 55 per innings. Dan will be playing cricket in the Surrey Premier League next season so he will be a loss but from the clubs point of view it is terrific for him to become a professional cricketer with one of the best county’s and sends out the signal that playing for Bury St Edmunds can take you to the highest level. Bury’s season closed with a Presentation Evening when 22 players were rewarded with trophies for scoring over 100 or taking 5 wickets in an innings. Dan had an excellent season for Bury St Edmunds in the East Anglian Premier League taking 35 wickets at an economy of 2.9 runs per over, the bowling generally has been excellent with Sean Cooper taking 31 wickets at a similar economy with Alistair Allchin taking 26 and Josh Cantrell 20.
