EDITOR’S LETTER
Welcome to the MAY ISSUE
We are still on lockdown as we go to press, we hope you are all staying safe and well. This has been a very strange time for all of us, but hopefully we are getting through this together as a community. It looks like you have all been doing your bit, looking after elderly neighbours and those who need to self-isolate. It makes us here at the directory proud to be part of this lovely community. The homes and gardens in the area are looking beautiful too. We have tried to make the magazine a postitive read this month, with a recipe to try at home on page 32. Our fashion spread on pages 62-63 has some casual wear to lounge around in. With all the hair salons and beauticians currently closed, go to pages 26-27 where we give you some fab beauty tips on keeping up a regime up in your own home, which will hopefully give you a boost. On page 36 we have a crossword and sudoko puzzles to keep you busy too! Please support each other and all our local businesses, even if they are closed, maybe make enquiries for future work, it will honestly mean the world to them at this moment in time, and hopefully we’ll all be back to some sort of normality soon. Take care everyone!

3 Tips for keeping those ‘locks’ looking glam in lockdown... STEPHEN JOHN
1. 2.
3.
All staff here at Stephen John are missing all of our beautiful clients/friends and looking forward to having you all back in the Salon as soon as the government says it is safe for us to open our doors again, but in the meantime here are a few little tips on how to keep those locks looking lovely in lockdown...
Use this time to give your hair a rest from heat tools and excessive styling and use a conditioning treatment once a week. Redken All Soft Mega Mask is one we highly recommend here at the Salon.
Play around and learn some new ways to style your hair, practice with hair accessories to hide the greys rather than resorting to a home hair colour, where corrections in the salon can be costly! Check our social media for our very own head scarf tutorial.
Blondes looking brassy? Try using Redken Blondage for maximum toning benefits. Leave on wet hair for 5 minutes to take your hair from brassy to sassy!! Use in conjunction with Blondage conditioner so it doesn’t dry the hair out, this can be done once a week until you’re able to get booked back into the salon.

Wow! Haven’t you guys been amazing, in looking after our staff!! We have received an abundance of emails and calls over the past month from hundreds of kind hearted people. The result has not just been a plethora of Easter eggs but hampers, toiletries, tea and coffee packs, food packs plus handmade scrubs, ear savers and knitted hearts for both the patient and their family members. We are honestly so overwhelmed by your support and we cannot thank you enough, there has certainly been many a tear shed by our team who have just been so touched by your kindness. The staff are also incredibly grateful, and when they are feeling quite vulnerable themselves, it’s amazing to be able to give them a boost and show our appreciation thanks to your donations. With money donated so far we have been able to provide our staff in need with food welfare packs, and also for our staff in isolation. We have printed labels for staff to wear which help identify who they are whilst in full PPE, we have purchased covers for equipment such as communication devices vital to front line staff, which reduces the risk spreading infection, and puzzle packs for our patients who cannot receive visitors. With your help we can continue to provide staff and patients with what is required in these unprecedented times. Our emergency appeal ‘Help your NHS hospital’ is still running so if you would like to make a donation, please visit www.justgiving.com/ HYNH or, to donate £5, text HYNH 5 (or the amount you wish to donate), to 70085. You can also email us at fundraising@ wsh.nhs.uk if you would like to support the hospital and our staff in any other way. If you would like to donate aid please can we ask that you do not just turn up at the hospital, contact the team who will safely coordinate it for you. Thank you so much, and stay safe. CORONA VIRUS It has been a very difficult eight weeks dealing with this virus, people are worried about work, money, their elderly parents and indeed their own lives, I have been told to stay at home for 12 weeks as I have COPD. There is no easy answer, we have a brilliant surgery alongside a wonderful pharmacy, they will do everything they can to help where they can. Despite people being advised not to gather in groups of more than two, my wife witnessed two large families on the field next to the youth club, children running around, parents huddled together, so much to obeying government orders not to. Mindless action that could cost lives, wake up people, this thing is real. STAY HOME KEEP SAFE! To date (15th April) there have been 12,350 deaths with yesterdays total 768 and it will get worse.
TOGETHERNESS I am very proud of the help and support being shown to people around our estate, offers of shopping, dog walking and phone calls. The whole estate has come together in this time of need and are helping wherever they can. I thank each and every one of you, well done! Together we will get through this. A big thanks to our Postmen/women refuse collector, storekeepers, care workers and of course Doctors, Nurses, Ambulance personal, and all that are working hard for us at this time.

Hedgehogs I have had an email from Mr Clive Seeley who found a young hedgehog in a very distressed condition near Oswyn Close, he contacted the local hedgehog rescue who asked him to catch it and they came and took it to a vet, the vet established that it had been poisoned, probably by slug pellets, sadly it could not be saved. Clive requests that people not use these pellets if there are hedgehogs in your area. Thank you in advance.
BOARD GAMES
As the youth club is closed during these troubled times, we have some board games, if anyone would like some give me a call and I will arrange to open the club so that they can be collected. My number is 07818 455472.
Litter pick
At the beginning of March, we had a litter pick over Saturday and Sunday, we had a very good turnout on both days. Thanks to all that attended very well done. We collected over twenty bags of litter, we also found out that someone had been dumping Tesco bag full of household litter behind the electricity station off Cranesbill Drive, the council will investigate this and hopefully catch the people concerned.
Global warming It is at times like this that you look for the good that’s happening, according to the scientists the hole in the Ozone layer is closing and this is because of the low Carbon monoxide output, no aircraft flying, less vehicles on our roads resulting in pollution levels being way down.
Until the next time, take care and stay safe!

Anyway here are a few topics that are relevant at the moment.
This is for those that are vulnerable, at home and with no other support from family or friends available to them. They can call the Home But Not Alone freephone 0800 876 6926 which is staffed from 9am to 5pm, seven days a week.
BROWN BIN COLLECTION
PARKING
This has ceased due, we are informed by West Suffolk Council, to the deployment of all available staff to the collection of black and blue bins. We’re told the period of unavailability will be added to current contracts so that there is no financial loss to residents. We will however ask Councillors to reinstate the service as soon as possible. More garden waste will be produced due to the onset of the growing season, plus of course people are at home and more gardening is being done.
The District Council is now responsible for illegal parking as of 6th April

SOUTHGATE Commun
YOUR COMMUNITY CENTRE IS STILL HERE
‘T
The sounds of song and dance, laughter and fun filled entertainment are etched in it’s walls but it is eerily quiet. Some thirty groups and users, and 300 visitors a week visit the Southgate Community Centre, but these are not normal times and we have had to shut our doors due to this uncompromising inexorable virus sweeping the planet. But we are just a sleeping giant, as a charity the Centre is run by voluntary Trustees, many have to self-isolate at home, but behind closed shutters essential maintenance is continuing. New lighting and decorating throughout, grass and hedge cutting - we are ready and waiting to open immediately when the curtain of uncertainty is lifted. We are on stand-by for the NHS should the nearby West Suffolk Hospital need our facilities – we miss everyone and everything about our Community Centre but the celebrations when this is over will be immense and heartfelt.
Stay safe always and think of these words adapted from the Rudyard Kipling poem... If you can talk with crowds, but keep your distance, Or walk with friends – nor lose the common touch, If people stay away on your insistence, If you can drink alone, but not too much. If you can fill each unforgiving minute, With books and music, writing, song and dance, Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it. Andy Abbott, Chair of Trustees
Thank you NHS With thanks to the children of Hardwick Primary School for a sentiment we all heartily endorse.

Moral Fibre
What’s the difference between my diet and Moreton Hall? Moreton Hall has enough fibre in it! Or at least it will do soon. You may have seen some of our roads and verges being dug up to accomodate the new £8m Bury St Eds Cityfibre network. This has been implemented by Suffolk leaders (as part of the national £4b rollout) to enhance business, NHS and public services connectivity, but it also means householders will receive fibre right up to their front doors at speeds up to 900mbps for both upload and download. I have just done a speed check and had just 56mbps download and 19mbps. This is largely because although we have fibre, the final stages of the network are currently copper wires. We have been lobbying for better connectivity for years and this is significant news. Cityfibre have said they will be performing works sensitively and re-instating verges and pavements. So far, they haven’t done this very well and communications have been poor. That said, they have not been able to deploy door-knockers or information properly due to the lockdown. Please keep me informed at peter.thompson@westsuffolk. gov.uk if you have any issues with the rollout.
On the Verge...
Speaking of verges being dug up, there has also been some controversy over the new verge near the community centre. This used to be cobbles, however they were raised and someone hurt themselves on them, so officers have replaced with a grass verge with a small fence for safety. I have had some complaints over the new solution from the church and have tried to alter the solution, however this isn’t church land and unfortunately the council sees safety trumping convenience, so it looks like it will be staying.
ONE IN ONE OUT Not shop customers this time. Schools. We have had the grave news that Moreton Hall Prep will be closing it’s doors for good at the end of summer term on 30th June. Unfortunately another victim of Covid 19 and very sad news for the staff and pupils of the school. I have already had huge amounts of correspondence on the subject. Whilst sad, there’s also some work to be done and I have already made some representations around the long term fate of the building and grounds. At time of writing, I cannot say anything, however there may already be two separate possibilities, one of which links to a larger and very exciting project. Be aware, I’ll be resisting any form of housebuilding on the fields.
It’s gone viral And speaking of lockdown, I hope everyone has been keeping well. We have had huge amounts going on in the background and it’s been one of the busiest times I’ve had as a councillor and Mayor. I must have spent over 20 hours last week just on legalities surrounding allotments, as an example. I have my details on the Suffolk-wide database, Home But Not Alone which can be accessed by vulnerable residents on 0800 876 6926. At time of writing, a postcard is being sent out which we’ve been working on for people to get support. Over the Easter weekend, the line took 202 calls. 68 could be re-directed for help or advice, 92 were helped getting food, 69 were helped with getting medicine and 7 were lonely. I was able to help with a single resident in their 80s near Mount Rd and I have put the great people at Kingsgate Church in touch, too. Thanks to Anna and David. If you run a voluntary group in Moreton Hall and want to help, you can register at families.communities@westsuffolk. gov.uk. Also, a huge thanks to all those at Tesco and the Post Office, amongst others, for their great resilience in tough times. The staff have been fantastic, especially after Tesco had a disgusting robbery last month. The organisation on social distancing here and at the pharmacy has been amazing. 20 | MAY 2020
Things are looking up!
On the upside, you may have seen the lovely skywriting over Easter above the town. We got a great view of it over Moreton Hall. This was reportedly done by the C3 church. I can’t vouch for them or what they do, but it brought great joy to many people. We’ve also seen amazing nighttime lights courtesy of Elon Musk and his Starlink internet satellites and courtesy of some great weather through April.

RED KITES IN MORETON HALL
R
ed Kites are birds of prey, with reddish feathers and a distinctive forked tail. They were once common across the UK, including Bury St Edmunds, as they scavenged for carrion. They also eat worms and will eat small mammals if they can catch one. Even Shakespeare refers to one, scavenging in the streets of London. However, from Victorian times they were, like many birds of prey, shot on site by gamekeepers, egg collecting and the DDT pesticide crisis in the 1960s was the final straw. By the 1980s they were confined to a
small mountain in mid Wales, and even into the early 2000s they were so special that at least one family from Moreton Hall went there to look for them. Since, then, through re-introduction schemes in many parts of the country and public re-education, red kites have rapidly spread and one or more pairs are thought to have moved across country to nest in the extremities of West Suffolk. Back in February, Simon was lucky enough to see one soar majestically over the traffic lights at The Bartons , and take
a good photo too, whilst in one of the legendary traffic queues. If we are lucky, this will be the first of many sightings and we look forwards to the day when red kites are common again throughout our town. Buzzards are now a fairly common sight, and some of us have seen sparrowhawks dash through our gardens in search of its feathered food. Let’s hope that the magnificent red kite might join these other birds, and maybe even nest in one the Woodland Ways woods and warm our hearts as it goes about its daily life.

LSS would like to give a huge and heartfelt thank you to everyone who is working so hard to provide many services, many of which were taken for granted before Covid-19, during these surreal times we find ourselves living through. Stay safe and well.
Update on NHS Lymphoedema Services The West Suffolk Lymphoedema Service continues to provide a service to support patients to the best they can through this difficult time, however, they are following national guidance and offering all clinic appointments as a telephone clinic appointment. WSLS are doing so to ensure patients do not attend the hospital and put themselves at risk, along with supporting the staff. WSLS will though complete home visits where appropriately triaged, if a patient is showing a large risk of deterioration. Hopefully this will allow patients to remain safe in their own homes, preventing potential hospital admissions, and providing safety to those who need it most throughout a time which is so uncertain. So far this has been really well received, patients appear to be selfmanaging well and very appreciative for WSLS’s time. When advised nationally, WSLS will look at re-integrating our clinics appropriately and hope that patients remain safely at home and please remember that WSLS are always available at the other end of the phone. Staff are working remotely, so please leave a voicemail on the Lymphoedema Service main number 01284 712732 and they will contact patients shortly after.
Ordering Compression Garments If you do regular ordering of garments and the garment fit remains stable, then using Patient Choice, contact details below, is probably the best method to use. Patient Choice can receive your garment prescription electronically from your GP or you can send your prescription direct to them, best to discuss this with them. I order my garments online through my surgery as they are good at both ordering and then delivering garments but, I am aware that not every surgery, if you can get to or contact one, offers that service. HEALTH & BEAUTY
BEAUTY TIPS to stay at home for!
We are living in exceptional circumstances that require us to give the best of ourselves. It is a time of calm, serenity and a lot of patience. We have to spend a lot of time at home due to the health crisis caused by the Coronavirus and any precaution is never enough in these cases. In life, there are always two ways of seeing things and seeing difficulties as opportunities, so take advantage of the time you are at home to take care of yourself more than ever. Here are some tips so that you can maintain a beauty routine every day.
1
Manicure to start the week
We start the week paying special attention to our hands, which are suffering more than they should due to continuous washing and alcohol sanitizers. Keep them hydrated and spend a little time and pamper them extra. French manicure is one of the simplest and most elegant ways to wear them, it will also continue to be a trend this spring or try to give your look a little colour and fill yourself with good energy, what matters is that you spend time for yourself.
2
It’s time for facial masks Now is the perfect time to put on that mask that had been waiting for a long time in the bathroom drawer. After applying it, lie down and relax completely, letting its magic work on your skin. You can use masks of cellulose or cream, which must be removed. If you do not have any at home, you can make it yourself with products that you have at home. Remember to apply them to a clean and clear face.
26 | MAY 2020
3 Meditation, good for body and soul
In these moments that you have to be at home, it is normal to be stressed and with some anxiety, in addition to the fact that it is very difficult to manage to live with other people in the same house for so long. For all these reasons, starting to meditate for a few minutes each morning or before going to sleep can be an excellent routine that will help you decrease anxiety and therefore contribute to your inner ... and outer beauty. Also, if you add a fragrance oil to the moment you can reinforce your vitality since it is ideal to combat those moments when we have the lowest spirits or are a little sad.

Learn makeup tricks
Just because you can’t leave home doesn’t mean you have to go with your face washed. Take advantage of the free hours to watch the beauty tutorials that interest you the most and learn new beauty techniques and tricks that you can put into practice very soon we hope!
5
Take care of your hair We always end up applying that conditioner quickly, take advantage now that you have time and let it rest, take it easy. If you do not have any you can make it yourself with ingredients that you surely have at home. Take care of your hair and hydrate it in depth on the days you have to stay at home.
Dress to impress! Staying at home does not mean being dressed badly or in pajama all day. Women’s fashion is also present when you are working at home or when you finish your exercise routine. When you choose clothes to be at home it is important to choose comfortable items and with a good fabric. You need to feel fresh and pretty.

19TH H
OLE
THE
HEALTH & BEAUTY
Welcome back to the 19th hole, well what can I say apart from its been a strange few weeks since I last wrote an edition of the 19th hole. As I write this we are still not able to get out on the golf course, however I hope that it won’t be long until we can. Like everyone reading this I am missing my golf badly throughout this time, but I have been trying to keep up some practice so that I am ready to play when the government allow us to. If you’re doing any practice, struggling or simply wanting to push your game, then myself and fellow PGA professional Simon Byford would love to here from you. Together we run a YouTube channel (PGA life 365), and we are currently doing TWO MINUTE TIP video every week day. So if you have a topic you would like us to cover then please get in contact through any social media platform. FACEBOOK - INSTAGRAM - TWITTER
TOUR NEWS
At the time of writing this we have no professional play worldwide, there has been talk that the PGA Tour will be back playing in June but with no spectators. I am not sure if this will happen, but as it stands currently I wouldn’t be surprised if this date gets put back. Time will tell I guess! Major Championships 2020 The Open has been canceled and will be back in 2021, however the remaining three majors have at present been rescheduled for later int he year. So will see might see some of the worlds best players battle it out for the top prizes in the professional game.
COACHES CORNER - Football Fun
This month we look at how you can start your downswing movement better… and you can do this drill at HOME. Do you often find yourself finishing your swing off balance or on your back foot like you can see me demonstrating here? If this sounds like you or you still feel that your movement could improve in your downswing this indoor or outdoor drill is for you. Ok so this month’s drill is very straight forward and easy to complete, all you will need is an object to throw around. (I suggest something soft so that there are no breakages) This drill can be completed indoors or outdoors, and as a pair or on your own. The best thing about this drill is that you wont need lots of space or have to take any lumps out of your garden for it to help your game.
The Drill: Stand with whatever item you have chosen in your golf posture like you would before hitting a shot. Making normal shortened swings move your arms into a short backswing position (around waist high). From here we want you to just work towards your partner and throw them your chosen object at around waist high. As you will see from the image if you do this with some success then your finish position will be completely different from where you normally end up. This movement when added to your golf swing will allow you to have a more consistent movement through your swing to help to achieve those great strikes. We hope the information above helped, and you can keep up the practice in the safety of your homes for now. DON’T FORGET the guys at PGA LIFE 365 have a videos on this topic and much more. Please visit them on YouTube at PGA LIFE 365 and don’t forget to help them out with a LIKE and hit SUBSCRIBE to get all of their content FREE OF CHARGE every time they release a video. I hope this edition of the 19th Hole has helped, if you would like any advice or help with your golf game please get in contact. STAY HOME - STAY SAFE

Our May Message – Save Lives, Stay at Home, Protect the NHS So, in accordance with the National situation, the museum will remain closed until further notice. I re-present last months comment from our Chairman, Graham Sage “Due to the Government announcement (23rd March 2020) we have no choice but to delay the 2020 opening of the museum until a later date. Rest assured we will continue to get the museum ready for it’s opening, whenever that may be. We’ll keep you all updated as to progress in the coming weeks. We have cancelled all public meetings and all US visits have been put on hold, as we have no idea when things will get back to somewhere near normal.” We all look forward to seeing our visitors but your health (and ours) is a priority, which we must all respect. Please stay at home and stay safe. BUT the Chairman and volunteers have still been active behind the scenes. Remembering the need for being 2m apart, they have continued with cleaning, restoring and maintenance of the exhibits and buildings. We are progressing well with the re-vamp of most of the displays so that when we reopen they will have a fairly comprehensive history of the ground crews, airmen, missions and also local connections linked to Rougham. One project completed is a ‘restoration’ of an old sign from the Museum Before... that’s been in storage for many years and not in the best condition. Graham has mounted it on MDF and re-painted it. It’s now going to be a welcome to the After Museum and put out each day we’re open, (whenever that will be!!). These are the ‘before and after pictures’. Well-done Graham! We are not sure about the “Echoes” event, planned for August; a decision on this will be made in the near future, following authority advice. We will update this information at the earliest possible time – please watch this space. Graham has also reminded us that the beginning of our season brings the renewal of our membership
fees – or joining fees if you wish to contribute to us (but you can join any time!). We hope you will continue to support the Museum and memories of the 94th Bomb Group here at Rougham Airfield. As you can see we also accept fees in US Dollars – we have members from the USA and from our local US bases at Lakenheath and Mildenhall. We thank you for your interest and support, you are always welcome to visit us or request historical airfield information. Our membership options and rates for 2020 are: UK Annual: Single £15 Joint £20 Family £25 Life Member £125. US Annual (at current exchange rate): Single $18.64 Joint $24.87 Family $31.09 Life Member $155.46. Payment can be made by Bank Transfer or Cheque (US Check) payable to Rougham Tower Association. Email Wendy at info@rctam94th.co.uk for an application form, (either hard copy or via email). With membership you receive the tri-annual newsletter “The Rougham Round-up” with articles on the museum and other interesting stories and events (either by post or email - preferred) and also entitles you to 10% discount on the PX (Museum Shop), and to vote at the AGM (November). Donations also gratefully received!! Many thanks. Graham Sage. RTA Chairman/volunteer. I will conclude with my monthly brief request. When we reopen we will still need volunteers, helpers – as before. If you are able to volunteer – we all seem to currently have a little ‘time on our hands’ – please contact us. Thank you – for reading about us, for supporting us, for your subscriptions and donations. In these exceptional times – STAY SAFE. Chat again next month. We look forward to hearing from you – and seeing you when possible. For our details please refer to our web site www. rctam94th.co.uk E-mail info@rctam94th.co.uk Mobile 07931 971771 MAY 2020 | 37

We’re here to help In the last issue of this magazine we offered advice on the help available to businesses if the submission of their annual accounts was being hindered by Coronavirus – Covid-19. How life has changed for everyone in a few short weeks because it’s no longer just about filing annual figures! Writes Chris Ridgeon. Like others around the Moreton Hall area, we are open for business. It would be wrong to add ‘as usual’ because we’re all living through extraordinary times. Coronavirus has turned our lives upside down and, like so many enterprises, we continue to support our clients as well as offering a lifeline to newcomers. Over the last few years, we’ve followed the HM Revenue & Customs mantra that ‘digitisation’ and ‘digitalisation’ are the ways forward. We’ve followed the ‘Cloud’ route and encouraged our clients to do likewise. Now, it’s paying off. Over 90 years old, Whiting & Partners has ten offices across the eastern region, eleven if you include Milton Keynes in the East Midlands. Our offices have been closed since ‘lockdown’ started. Our 160+ staff have been working from home and going about our business by landline, mobile phone, e-mail, Skype and Facetime. Office switchboards are answered promptly and incoming post is checked physically on a regular basis. We are available to help if you need us. Since the Chancellor introduced the special measures to help businesses, employers and workers, there have been regular, almost daily, updates and revisions to meet changing demands. As an example, the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme attracted 3.2m applications in its first few days following its launch on Monday, April 20. Our website: www.whitingandpartners.co.uk is updated regularly to reflect those changes, but human contact is important, so don’t hesitate to pick up the phone to speak to us at Greenwood Court, in Skyliner Way. We’ll be happy to help.

Easter egg thanks for West Suffolk key workers
West Suffolk bin crews have expressed their appreciation after receiving 200 Easter eggs as thanks for their frontline service during the pandemic. They are among a range of key workers who between them have shared 500 eggs donated through the NHS Supplychain in Bury St Edmunds. The welcome gesture was arranged through a local lady, Tara Chandler, a registered childminder for other key workers. Tara explained “I know we are protecting the NHS by staying at home and all playing our part in protecting others, but it is the key workers who are allowing life to go on, and we wanted to recognise that. A friend of mine who works for the NHS Supplychain asked if I could help to distribute some extra Easter eggs that had been kindly donated by Wilkinson’s and I was all up 40 | MAY 2020
for it. I got in touch with the West Suffolk Council and the local NHS doctors’ surgeries and pharmacies and the wider Bury St Edmunds community and delivered the eggs over three days, obviously observing the social distancing rules” Cllr John Griffiths, Leader of West Suffolk Council said, “I thank Tara and the NHS supplychain for this delightful and caring gesture. It is this just this kind of thoughtfulness we rely on in these unprecedented times. Our staff are working tirelessly to get support to the vulnerable in our communities, to local businesses and to deliver
essential services such as emptying bins and working in our streets and parks. I am proud that everyone is playing their part and I am humbled by the willingness of our residents and businesses to do theirs.” As well as bin crews and street scene workers, Tara delivered eggs to the local sorting office, the ambulance and fire station, Oxlip House, Sebert Wood and Abbots Green schools who are still open for key workers children, the Moreton Hall post office, Mount Farm surgery and Pharmacy and the Howard Estate Pharmacy and two boxes of chocolate bunnies to the Hermes office.

MAY’S ENERGY SAVING TIPS IN YOUR HOME.
I hope you are all coping with lock down and I appreciate that each one of us has our
own battle with this difficult time. Hang in, this will not be for ever!! This month we will give you a few tips to help you work out the amount and cost of energy you are using per appliance. If you have children turn it into a useful and educational game.
1. 2. 3.
If you have a smart meter this is the time to put it to good use, check each major appliance in your home to see how much energy they use and how much money they cost. You may be shocked by the price of a shower, a functioning tumble dryer or a boiling kettle. If you don’t have a smart meter, you can purchase an electronic energy meter on line for a few pounds and by plugging in appliances to the meter see how much energy they use and from that how much money they cost. See below for a simple calculation to work out the cost. Note: the energy meter will give you a kilowatt hour reading so you miss out the first part of the maths below. Here is the very simple maths to help you work out the cost of using an appliance: On the back of appliances you will find a label. This gives a whole range of information but you are only interested in the watts figure -
Cost of energy is usually worked out in Kilowatt Hours (kWh) i.e. 1,000 watts of power per hour. If we take a light bulb rated at 50 watts, and divide this into 1,000 this gives us a figure of 20. This means you could keep that light bulb shining for 20 hours to equal 1kWh of electricity. 1,000 ÷ 50 Watts = 20 hours. This principal applies to all electrical gadgets. If we now go to an electric bill and scroll down to charges from the energy company, we will find a price per kWh e.g. 15 pence. From this we can deduce that if we keep the light bulb shining for 20 hours it costs 15p.
4.
Ever heard of ‘vampire energy’, this is the name given to wasted energy used by appliances and gadgets left on standby. It has been calculated to cost each household £100 per year. Make it a habit to unplug or switch off anything that is lying idle.

t-shirt tote bag YOU WILL NEED:
An old t-shirt and a pair of scissors n Cut the arms off the t-shirt to make it like a vest n Cut a scooped neck in the front and back of the t-shirt n Cut slits at the bottom of the t-shirt about 5cm in length, make sure you are cutting both the front and back at the same time n Turn the t-shirt inside out n Take the top and matching bottom strip and tie in a double knot n Repeat on each strip until ever one is double knotted n Turn the bag the right way up n Put your sunglass and book in it and take a trip into the garden!

Garden Confidential
by Tom Clarke
What to do in your garden this May... During this time of the Covid 19 Pandemic the garden has never been more important. Yes we have to recognise that those of us with gardens are the lucky ones and we should make full use of it providing as it does a safe sanctuary to get a physical workout. But it is much more than that! The little bit of freedom to enjoy the sunshine after being cooped up indoors in isolation has untold benefits to our mind. Taking our minds of the ongoing world events and just for a while delighting in nature enables a sense of normality.
Plant of the Month ACANTHUS SPINOSUS

jobs for the month
General Maintenance
l Check for nesting birds before clipping hedges l Recycle junk mail. If you have one of those shredding machines then shred your envelopes and paper and add to your compost heap. l Remove any blanketweed and lay on the side of ponds for a day so any life can return to the water. l Keep mowing your lawns regularly. Sow seed to fill any bare patches and edge your lawns l Increase water given to houseplants
Lawn Maintenance l Lawns will need cutting ideally every two weeks l Edge the lawn to create a ‘gutter’ around the lawn edge (this stops the lawn from growing into the border). l If you have a problem with moss and weeds apply a combined moss and weed killer or continue to rake.
Vegetable & Fruit Garden l Earth up your potatoes until you have a canopy of foliage. The tubers start to swell as the plants come to flower, but don’t be tempted to harvest until the flower trusses are fully out. If we don’t get rain you will need to water to swell the tubers l Pinch out the tops of the broad beans once the flowers are visible, as it helps to keep the black fly at bay l Surround strawberries with straw to protect the fruit l All soft fruit berries will need a net protection or your blackbirds will make short work of them l If you haven’t done so already prepare a trench for some runner beans. Dig a trench a spade wide and around 2 spades depth. Add into this any vegetable and grass cuttings before covering with soil. Erect your cane supports before planting your runner beans.

THE
Socially Distant Runner BY ANDREW SOUTHWOOD
I
’m lucky. I’ve always been an unsociable runner. I could count on one hand the number of training runs I’ve done with company this year. I am of course miserable and don’t like people, and people don’t like me. Although, those aren’t actually the reasons for my solitary training.
noticed a big increase in runners, walkers and cyclist out and about. Pretty much everyone respecting the social distancing rules. More smiles and waves than I ever used to get. All of us it seems are eager to make some sort of human connection in that short time out of our homes.
During these tricky times, my daily run has never been so important, or so welcome. Don’t misunderstand me – my family is everything to me, but boy, do I need that time to myself every day! Whilst pounding the country lanes I sort my head out, planning ahead and resetting my stress and anxiety levels. It’s all about my mental wellbeing, not so much the physical, that’s just an added bonus.
The unspoken hugging of opposite sides of the path is now the norm. A big smile and knowing look tells me the other person is enjoying their daily allowance just as much as me. Ironically, I feel the enforced physical distancing has brought the community closer together in some respects. Never, in 20 years of running, have I felt such positivity from passers-by.
I am clearly not alone anymore. Daily exercise has become a bit of thing hasn’t it? I have
In an attempt to make my runs even more remote my routes now mainly comprise

of rural country lanes, out in the beautiful forgotten Suffolk countryside, just a mile or so from the busier paths. I can cover 10 miles seeing only a farmer in his truck, a dog walker and a cyclist. Without exception we will all acknowledge each other. A subtle nod or enthusiastic “Good morning!”, either way, we all know the score, and we are all on the same side. I hope that the other side of this lockdown, some of you continue this new exercise regime so many seem to have adopted. It’s good for the body and soul, of that we must surely all agree? Equally, the solidarity and community spirit that has risen, like the cream in a bottle of Gold Top, must also prevail. Some good will come of this, and once its all over I’ll be high fiving everyone I run past!

WHAT TV BOX SETS WATCH ON
CHERNOBYL
Sky’s depiction of the Chernobyl disaster, which saw the explosion of one of the powerplant’s nuclear cores, has been ranked as the top TV series of all time on media website IMDB. It fully deserves this place. There’s a unnerving level of accuracy and realism with the five episodes of the miniseries. Each is more gripping than the last. At its most frightening, Chernobyl will make you worry about future nuclear accidents, at its least it will have you reaching for the history books to learn more about the disaster.
THE HANDMAID’S TALE
Based on Margaret Atwood’s best-selling novel, The Handmaid’s Tale centres on a future dystopian United States where women are treated as property of the government. In an attempt to repopulate the world, fertile women are forced into sexual servitude. But Offred isn’t planning on living in the status quo, she’s determined to survive the barbaric system and find the daughter who was cruelly taken from her.
WESTWORLD
Loosely based on a 70s movie written by Michael Crichton (the author of Jurassic Park), Westworld starts as a story about a Wild West-themed amusement park populated by hyper-realistic androids known as ‘hosts,’ but it descends into something quite different when the hosts start to break out of their pre-set routines. Anthony Hopkins stars in the first season of this sometimes confusing, but always worthwhile HBO production – and both seasons are streaming on Now TV ahead of the upcoming third.
TRUE DETECTIVE
All three seasons of True Detective are currently on Now TV and Sky. The first season starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson is an iconic, tense and disturbing investigation spanning decades and while the second is rather uneven by comparison and probably best skipped, the third season starring two-time Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali is a brilliant return to form for the series.
THE WALKING DEAD
Now into its tenth season, The Walking Dead remains one of the most popular shows in the US despite its epic 10-year run. Brit Andrew Lincoln plays main protagonist Rick Grimes, a sheriff who wakes from a coma to discover there’s been a zombie apocalypse. He comes to lead a group of survivors as they look to carve a safe space in a dangerous world full of the undead, gangs, fanatical religious groups and numerous frenemies. Iffy second season aside, it’s a consistently brilliant show that’s just begging to be binged. 50 | MAY 2020

MORETON HALL Dear Friends, At the time of writing we are expecting to be locked down for at least a further three weeks and the latest news is it may well be for much longer. These are very trying times for everyone on the estate. While Suffolk does not seem to have been as badly affected as other parts of the country, by now many of you will have friends and family who have contracted the virus and some of you will have lost friends to it. I know of at least two deaths on the estate and one of my friends died around Easter from a village in another part of Suffolk. Some of you will know that on a daily basis I have been putting up a thought-forthe-day on the Psalms. Very shortly we will be putting up Psalm 23. I think Psalm 23 has some very powerful words for all of us. David sees himself as a lamb and His Father as the Good Shepherd. He sees himself as being totally reliant on his Father God, the Shepherd, to provide him with adequate
food, shelter and water. He believes God will lead him through difficult places, but always to safe pasture. The reference to ‘behold you prepare a table for me in the face of my enemies’ is a shepherding technique. The shepherd would go ahead of the main flock, find a safe space, light a fire and then go over the ground where the sheep would lie that night. Then by removing all scorpions and snakes so that it is completely safe for the sheep to be there while the shepherd guards them. That is what He is doing for us all.
something better is prepared for us on the other side of the grave, if we put our trust in Jesus. Therefore, at these dark times be comforted and strengthened by the promises of God.
David then goes on to talk about ‘even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil because your rod and staff comfort me’. For some of us Covid-19 will be the end of our lives. For others the tragedy of mourning for loved ones and wondering what would have happened if things had been different. Through all these dark times, God is here to protect us and to guide us. We have the promise that death is not the end and
At the end of this letter you will find a poem written by me on Easter Day which is a summary of the virus and something about the hope we have. I hope it will give you comfort and peace.
Also know the church now has an extensive phone network and we are trying our very best to care for anybody who is vulnerable. If you know somebody who is vulnerable and is in need of some form of practical support please either contact the Borough on 757118 or you can ring me and we will see if there is anything we can do to help.
Assuring you of our prayers and good wishes,
With every good wish Yours sincerely,
Revd. Canon Jonathan Ford. Minister Christ Church Moreton Hall

We long to be active, In our passive resistance. Inhabiting attics, Waiting and listless. Church as sanctuary, forbidden. WE ARE YOUR LOCAL CHURCH HERE FOR YOU
GOD ALONGSIDE US
A few weeks ago, the Christian Church celebrated Easter, remembering the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Bible tells us that Jesus appeared to his disciples on the night of his resurrection and then again, a week later. One of the disciples was not present the first time and refused to believe what his friends told him until he met Jesus for himself. This man has gone down in history as “doubting Thomas”, a name which seems a bit harsh. He was Thomas the realist. What he was told was truly unbelievable. Thomas’ doubts did not drive him away from Jesus, quite the opposite - Thomas went closer to Jesus than the others because he wanted to see and feel the wounds of the crucifixion. Jesus not only allowed him, He encouraged him. It’s OK to have questions. Many of us Christians, people of other faiths or none, will have questions at this time as our lives have become so altered by the impact of the Coronavirus. Many of them are a variation on the theme: “Where is God in all this?”. In another encounter in the Bible, we read of Jesus meeting with friends whose brother had just died. Standing with them outside the tomb, Jesus did not simply observe their grief, He shared it and wept with them. If you want to read these stories for Pentecost is the yourself, they are in John’s gospel chapters 11 and 20. festival when Christians At Southgate Church, we will never claim to have all the celebrate the gift of the answers. As Christians we believe God has not turned His Holy Spirit. It is marked back on His creation and the people He loves, but through on the Sunday 50 days Jesus, God relates to us. He understands emotions and the after Easter – this year difficulties of human living. Just as Jesus stood and wept with on 31 May. Pentecost is His friends, God comes alongside us in difficult times, shares regarded as the birthday our grief and comforts us. God is not a potentate ordering of the Christian church, this or that to happen, but the world is full of chance and and the start of the accident, and God has let it be so because that is the one sort church’s mission to the of world in which freedom, development and responsibility world. It is also the 46th and love could come into being. God is committed to this birthday of Southgate kind of world in love and to each person in it, and is with us in Church! this time of trouble, giving himself to us in fortitude, healing and faith to help us through.

what’s on in MAY
We are your local church, open to everyone of any faith or none. So please if you are in need of support of any kind please contact, Jackie, our Church Administrator. If we can help we will and if we cannot help you ourselves we will find someone who can. You are not alone! So how do you ‘do’ church during a time of lockdown? We are using a variety of methods to keep in contact with one another and provide support where we can, and you are very welcome to be part of that.
ON-LINE – ZOOM AND YOUTUBE
Churches and Christians across the country have been getting innovative on-line. Southgate Church is using Zoom and YouTube extensively to continue to meet up. If you want to join in all you need to do is register your e-mail address with us and we will send you invites to our Zoom meetings with all you need to link in. Simply send Jackie our Church Administrator a quick e-mail asking to be added to our Zoom e-mail list and she will take it from there. Our regular meetings are being turned into Zoom Meetings. So far we have : Sunday Mornings at 10.30am – Main Church Service Sunday Mornings at approx. 11.30am – 12.00 noon – Zoom Coffee – a time to chat and share Sunday afternoon – 4pm – 5pm Zoom Sessions for children. Monday 7pm-8pm – Zoom Liquid – for teenagers Wednesday 7.30pm – 8.30pm – Zoom Bible Study / Discussion Group More to come as we Zoomify our other groups and invent completely new events on-line.
E-MAILS
Once a week we e-mail out our newsletter with details of the weeks Zoom events, prayer needs and other church and family news. WE can put you on our distribution if you would find this helpful.
TELEPHONE CALLS
In addition to on-line methods of working we are also contacting people by telephone to have a friendly catch up and make sure everyone is coping at this time. If you are Self Isolating or Shielding it is difficult to get the shopping you need, we have a pastoral team that will organise someone to get it for you. Simply contact Jackie, and explain what you need and she will see how we can help.
God bless!
