EDITOR’S LETTER
Welcome to the JUNE ISSUE
Hope you are all keeping safe and well. We are now just starting to see the lockdown relaxing slightly, so hopefully there is light at the end of the tunnel, but please still be aware and take the government guidelines seriously, we are still losing people to this terrible virus, our hearts go out to anyone who has been affected by it. With a lot of businesses being able to open again, our local restaurants and cafés/bars are still doing takeaway services until they can allow customers back in, so please support them through this, and non-essential retail shops should be opening later this month. Whilst there may not be any holidays on the agenda just yet, at least the weather has been kind to us, so on page 61 we have a few essential items for chilling out in the garden, and our recipe on page 32 would be great to eat in the sunshine. The local community have been great throughout this and hopefully some of us will look back on this in years to come with some memories, celebrating VE day, clapping on a Thursday night, and all the virtual quiz nights with family and friends. Enjoy this months issue, and next month hopefully we will be back to some kind of new normality.

Our lives are currently very different and lots of us have changed or added to our work roles, started doing online Zoom classes instead of going to the gym and started crafting or learning new things. We are a versatile race and it’s amazing how innovative so many people are being, none more so than our fundraisers. Wanting to support our Help your NHS hospital appeal means our supporters have come up with some interesting challenges. First was Ben Blowes who, having had his 50 mile race cancelled, decided he would complete the run in his own front garden! This transpired to mean a total of 2080 laps of his front garden which also meant very sore ankles and knees by the end. Ben has raised almost £6,000 and seemed to start the ball rolling for crazy fundraising after appearing on the TV and radio during his mad challenge! The Rector of the Box River Benefice, Fr Robert Parker-McGee, decided Easter eggs weren’t enough this Easter Sunday so shaved his head to become a proper egg head for our appeal and raised £1155 in the process. The local reverend wanted to do this act as a show of solidarity to all the wonderful NHS staff working so hard. And the young fundraisers have also got involved; 7 year old Freddie Turner started taking online exercise classes raising over £2,000 and 11 year olds Ella Stewart and Sam Blackwell have completed a triathlon. Ella is the daughter of respiratory physio Helen Stewart so knows only too well how Covid-19 affects patients on a daily basis. The duo have spent the last few weeks completing a 2.4 mile swim (neither has a big pool but as we said innovation is the key – a bungee cord tied to the side means you can do resistance swimming and soon clock up the miles), a 112 mile bike ride and a full 26.2 marathon run…phew! They finished raising over £2000!!! Local football clubs are on board too with donations received from Thetford FC and Ipswich Town FC while Thurston Rugby Club spent their lockdown time running and cycling their Thurston Rangers Rainbow Relay Run. They raised a staggering £18,000 and money is still coming. Each relay was run from their own villages to avoid unnecessary journeys and the hand over was done by filming each other. They then finished their lap in true rugby tradition…with a beer! Finally, Long Melford Cricket Club have started their challenge of walking, cycling or running 2020 mile in just 61 days. We wish them luck and will keep you posted on their progress. CORONAVIRUS UPDATE The community centre remains closed during June. Whilst we really want to open up the facility again to all the hirers and social club users, the one thing that we will not do is open the centre up without following the suggested guidelines laid down by goverment making the centre safe for all users and staff. One thing for certain is we will have to operate in a different way in the early weeks and months. However this is not impacting on the post office which remains open or the regular blood doner session the next one scheduled during June. So until we know more. CORONA VIRUS It has been a very tough eight weeks since this pandemic hit our shores, we have lost many lives and sadly still losing more. The photo is of the Air Ambulance which landed on the field near the play area at the top of the estate airlifting a patient to west Suffolk hospital, hopefully a successful outcome. There seems to be light at the end of the tunnel and hopefully we might be nearing the end. I can’t find words to express the wonderful way our estate and indeed our town has rallied to help those in need with shopping, dog walking, looking in to see everyone was coping, even phone calls are important. Thanks to every one of you and thank you for the continuous applauding on Thursday nights.

Walking around the estate it was wonderful to see the display of flags and bunting, again, bringing people together in a common purpose, street parties while keeping safe distancing rules, Kembold Close looked great with their Pearly Kings and Queens, a small close arranged a tea party marking out seating arrangements offering a free cupcake to anyone who passed by, once again thank all of you who took part, a great way of remembering our brave services men and women lost 75 years ago.

BREAK IN
Over the weekend of 1st and 2nd of May some idiots broke into the fish and chip shop on Lawson Place. They kicked in a window panel on the front door crawled through looking for things to steal, however I spoke with the owner who informed me that they leave nothing on the premises overnight and the only thing stolen was their tip box, how low can you get. The cost to repair the damage will be expensive.
Safe spacing I received a call from Ali the manager of the pharmacy requesting help in getting some measure of keeping control of people entering the pharmacy and doctors, I contacted the council they informed me that there was nothing they could do as it was not a council matter, a bit of quick thinking I remembered that there was a builder working on a wall and he was almost finished so I asked him if he could lend us his spacers he uses to block the path while he was working, he gladly obliged, so Ali got her crowd control measures.
Healthy Estate I don’t know if people have noticed how green and fresh our woodlands are, how loudly the birds are singing, we even have deer in the woods, a family of foxes up on Ten Acre field and a swan on the pond by the under pass near Suffolk Park. I think the rest from carbon is changing everything, if you can get out there and enjoy our beautiful woodlands.

A LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL?
There now seems to be a possibility of your splendid Community Centre re-opening on or around 4 July according to the government’s plan to ease lockdown. Let’s hope so! This June edition shows a small sample of the many organisations which use our building and facilities. We hope to welcome them all back very soon. We are grateful to HM Government for a grant which will help offset our loss of income and keep our finances in reasonably good order. Our two dedicated members of staff are currently on furlough for which we also receive financial support. Volunteer redecoration has now been completed throughout the Centre with new feature walls in the Small Hall and Committee Room. New LED lighting has been installed in the main hall, taking advantage of it being empty at this time, our valued local electrician, Luke Alexander, has once again provided excellent service and attention. Together with Southgate Church, we extend our grateful thanks to Sally, Gemma, Jeremy and Cat who produce this splendid community magazine each and every month, and who help us to communicate with all the people of the area we serve. They have made the sensible decision to produce a combined edition of The Directory for Southgate and Moreton Hall during a period when advertising has understandably dropped off. We ask our readers in Southgate to support all of their advertisers during this time so that this splendid publication can continue to prosper. See you all soon! NEWS It’s May and we are still in lockdown and although there has been some easing of measures I’m sure none of us could ever have imagined that as we celebrated Christmas we would be facing this crisis. Watching or listening to the news there appears to be little else mentioned, Coronovirus daily updates, numbers, graphs, slides, all which can be worrying and distressing and I know this has been very difficult for some residents. However, Patrick and I have been heartened by the support residents in Southgate Ward have shown towards one another and it makes us extremely proud to be your councillors. A few examples of kindness are sunflower hearts being shared so we can enjoy seeing them in gardens in the summer, potatoes shared with pensioners, cakes baked and delivered and toys, games and books left outside houses for others to enjoy for free. This weekend, 23rd-25th May, Jessica Rudd has very kindly organised a Zoo Trail around the Nowton Estate, 40 households will be taking part and I’m sure local families will thoroughly enjoy this. Ian Davey, landlord at the Macebearer has been running a drawing competition for the children with the winner will receive a beautiful elephant. All entries have been posted in the pub windows.
Darren Ward, Manager at McColls and the Bury St Edmunds Rickshaw have worked together to meet the needs of residents who have requested food deliveries. Darren and his staff have worked hard under pressure and difficult conditions to provide us with our everyday essentials and I know this is greatly appreciated by residents. Although McColls is part of a chain, Darren has been supporting local businesses by stocking their produce, such as eggs, honey, fruit and vegetables. The Home But Not Alone Service launched by West Suffolk Council at the commencement of the lockdown has helped many vulnerable people connect with a volunteer helping them with getting shopping and medication. FOXES ON MORETON HALL
F
oxes are rarely seen on Moreton Hall. Sometimes on a quiet evening you might see one from your car. More often, one can find their droppings, especially at Ten Acre Field, next to Moreton Hall School. The droppings are distinctive, often full of hair from mice or voles, sometimes studded with seeds or berries, usually curled round by 180 degrees and tapering to a point at one end. and always deposited on a grass tussock or other place conspicuous to other foxes. Ten Acre Field is a good spot for foxes, with a woodland fringe almost devoid of people, and plenty of rabbits on the boundary with Moreton
Hall’s only arable field. The farmer, a tenant of West Suffolk Council, must be pleased that the foxes keep down the number of rabbits which munch the crops and profits. Foxes live in social groups with a dominant pair and subordinate adults. The dominant pair get all the best feeding areas and the others are forced to travel more widely. Its the subordinate foxes which more usually enter gardens to feed, or are seen more often, because they have to work harder to find food. So the reason we rarely see foxes is probably because there are few subordinate adults; the dominant pair
keep to themselves in the best locations and there are few others forced to work hard for a living. The fox population density is low here at the moment, unlike cities such as London where foxes are abundant and frequently seen. Foxes are under threat from diseases spread by our dogs. The toxocara parasite, which foxes catch from dog poo, can also cause a nasty illness in children. Another similar parasite arrived from France in the 1980s, and was almost certainly brought in to the country by pet dogs. Picking up dog poo prevents health problems to children as well as to our bushy-tailed wild predators.

LSS continues to give a huge and heartfelt thank you to everyone who is working so hard to provide and keep open many services during Covid-19 lockdown. LSS 2020 meetings With the latest Government advice in mind, we have decided to cancel LSS’s meeting for the 10th August. The next LSS meeting is scheduled for the 19th October and we will of course heed any Government advice about groups of people meeting up,liaise with Moreton Hall Community Centre and also we will, nearer that date, ask patients about how they feel about attending a meeting? Exercise is good for you... Hopefully the slight easing of lockdown restrictions will allow for more exercise outside for some people, but many will be missing their regular Zumba, yoga and other exercise classes. Whilst these can be done via Zoom and other online classes it is not quite the same as meeting up with others and may be having a coffee afterwards. Exercise plays an important part in coping with living with Lymphoedema and Lipodema and with the health maintenance of these chronic conditions, so it is essential to do what exercise you can whilst we continue with the Covid-19 lockdown. Doing Simple Lymphatic Drainage (SLD) massages twice a day can help to reduce painful fluid retention. Using a handheld roller to massage arms and legs can also be beneficial. Always remember to massage in an upwards direction whether doing SLD or if using a roller (these can be ordered from Amazon, Argos and other similar places) Do please stay safe and well.

Crafting is still being achieved in the challenge group and new skills are being nurtured. New talent has been gently uncovered which gives us ideas for going forward with Positively Crafty. Members have still been keeping in touch and encouraging each other with the weekly tasks set, like a small close knit family. As you can see needle felting, ways with wool, cards and embroidery have been ongoing and with new people joining in may mean new interests to try. This has been really helpful for those who are alone and feel isolated. A lot of things that were crucial in our lives and that we are now being deprived of is having a profound effect on our mental wellbeing. This uncertainty can cause many feelings to rise to the surface and invade our every day calm. If your mind is working against you, you may feel more drawn to doing things that create more negativity than positivity. Distraction is one small way to help overcome this and learning to focus on what you can control rather than what you cannot. Taking care of your physical health, keeping in touch with others close to you and using relaxation techniques can help too. Solace can be found in sharing your feelings with others in a similar position. Seek out and create moments of joy in your day, set your intention and make choices that bring happiness and make you feel good. Minimise the things that do not serve you well especially if they have become a habit. Being deprived of other human contact has been such a loss to those who rely on regular social interaction so a chat date or a video call where you can see another person and their facial expressions can be of real value. This is a really tough time and it is vital to stay connected and become adept at the same time making the best of each day in the best way you can. Your senses help to focus on the present and help you find calm in the moment and it is these moments that can bring you joy. Touch, hear, smell, taste, see, listen and breathe can help you find a way to activate relaxation as can reconnecting with nature which is a great advantage to our mental wellbeing. Through all this we are being guided by the government rules which change accordingly and we have to bear in mind many of our members are vulnerable. As much as members would like to come together sadly it is not to be. CPSG meetings remain postponed for the immediate future and when it is safe to do so we will meet again. You may have noticed work being carried out by this company throughout our area. For those who are unaware of the purpose, it is to bring fast full fibre broadband to the whole of Bury, paid for by the Government at a cost of £8 million, starting in Moreton Hall. It should be noted that the envisaged service will be separate from BT/Openreach, in as much as it will require a specific service provider, currently either, Talk Talk or Vodafone, to connect your property separately, which in most cases involves channelling across your driveway and drilling an access hole in your wall, unless you have a convenient telegraph pole.Those of us who have moved from cities such as Cambridge may remember this being done to provide cable tv. The problem so far is reinstatement of the verges and access ramps. Instead of covering with top soil and reseeding the verges, their excavations have resulted in subsoil now visible leaving an ugly scar on the verges, and strips of tarmac on the ramps and footpaths. Brown Bin Collection
I have heard, whilst writing, from the District Council, that the brown bin collection will resume on June 1st, with the normal fortnightly collections. All residents will be informed of this. In the meanwhile I have purchased one of the recommended composters so that stored garden waste can be dealt with properly, in the meanwhile

It does not matter what time of the year it is, drivers will find a reason not to turn their engines off. In winter to keep warm, in summer to keep cool or the favourite “I am only going to be a couple of minutes while I wait for my passenger. In the last week or so, there have been comments from members of the Air Quality Group, of which the Residents Association are members, all remarking on how more tolerable life is during this period of lockdown. Air quality is so much improved without the constant traffic flow we suffered before. At present there does not appear to be a willingness to involve our Parking Enforcement Officers in controlling the idling problem. We will be lobbying to get this matter addressed. There are free posters and stickers available from the District Council which we urge our members and Councillors to obtain and distribute. Allowing your vehicle to idle is an offence, and could be dealt with by the District Councils new enforcement officers, under laws that already exist.

Besides the continuous building of new houses, there are large projects underway on the Business Park, such as warehouses, factories and a supermarket. The Residents Association continually monitor this construction and pass on the concerns of our residents and ourselves, to the relevant authorities. HEALTH & BEAUTY Welcome back to the 19th Hole, it’s now June and we have been back on course for a couple of weeks. It has been great to watch everyone get back out on the golf course, and in my experience at the golf club I work at people are sticking to the social distancing rules that have been put in place. It’s has been and continues to be a very strange time for us all, and I believe us as golfers are very lucky to have a sport that could return this early after lockdown. The fact that the weather has been amazing as well is a bonus, I do hope that those of you that have been able to get out have enjoyed your golf and can continue to do so.

COACHES CORNER - SHOULD YOU BE LISTENING TO THIS SWING ADVICE?
So throughout lockdown we have been running a series on our YouTube channel PGA Life 365 called “Improve @ Home” this months coaches corner is taken from one of those videos. So we have either had it said to us or heard it said to others after a poor shot… YOU JUST LIFTED YOUR HEAD UP! Should we be listening to this advice?? Ok so if we take a look at the address position in Image 1, you can see that chin is on my chest (Head Down). From this position it will make it hard for me to make a big enough turn into my backswing (Image 2) to produce enough power to hit the shots I will need to throughout my round of golf. In the next Image (3) you can see me “Head Down” at impact, this position with my head fixed down at the floor isn’t letting my body turn and move as it needs to into impact and beyond. This will effect the
amount of control over the club face and the point at which I make contact with the ground. These will directly effect the direction, height and power of the golf shots you will be hitting from this position. Hold your finish… Image 3 shows a “head down” finish position. We all know the position we are looking for here (Image 4) but you will have to make a lot of adaptions from this “Head Down” position to achieve this classic finish. So we asked you should you be listening to this advice… the short answer is NO! There could be lots of different things going on in your golf swing, so if your struggling with any of the things listed above then please get in contact with myself or another PGA Professional don’t just KEEP YOUR HEAD DOWN. Local Bury St Edmunds food business Infusions Limited has reopened its click and collect service for the public, offering quick and easy, contact free food shopping to everyone. The company, based on the Rougham Trading Estate, initially started the service in response to food shortages in the supermarkets at the start of the crisis with great success and were processing between 300-400 orders a day. However a serious fire in one of their warehouses at the end of March devastated their infrastructure and meant they temporarily had to cease trading. The new service, which starts on Monday June 1st, allows customers to shop and pay for a wide range of food products online at www.infusions4chefs.co.uk before collecting the next working day. Orders can be placed 24 hours a day, seven days a week and collections are available between 10am and 6pm Monday to Friday and 10am and 6pm on Saturday. The extensive product range includes store cupboard essentials such as pasta, canned goods, rice, flour and yeast as well as refrigerated items such as cheese and butter. In addition, the company stock tableware, cleaning products (including hand sanitiser!) and a range of sundries and gifts. Director of Operations at Infusions Limited, Sarah Stamp explained: “We have a warehouse full of literally thousands of different food products which we usually sell to hotels, pubs and restaurants who are currently unable to open. When people were initially struggling to get hold of core items like pasta which we stock, we decided to start offering our products to the public and were amazed both at how grateful they were not to have to battle the crowded supermarkets and how popular the service was. We have received so much support from our amazing customers since the fire, we are delighted to be able to take these first baby steps towards reopening our business fully.� The new service involves zero contact and adheres to all social distancing guidelines with all staff wearing face masks and each crate being sanitised after each use, so offers reassurance to those who find supermarkets overwhelming at this difficult time, or who are self-isolating.

AUBERGINE, TOMATO & HALLOUMI PIE Bake this veggie pie for a meat-free meal – you can feed the family and still have leftovers for lunch the next day. Serve with a handful of salad leaves.
INGREDIENTS: 6 tbsp olive oil or rapeseed oil 2 large aubergines, cut into thin rounds 1 large red onion, halved and sliced 2 garlic cloves, crushed 2 tsp ground coriander 400g can chopped tomatoes 1 ½ tbsp pomegranate molasses or good balsamic vinegar small bunch mint, leaves chopped 270g block halloumi, cut into 8 slices 500g block all-butter puff pastry 50g pine nuts, toasted 1 egg, beaten 1 tbsp sesame seeds
METHOD: Heat 2 tbsp oil in your largest frying pan. Cook the aubergine slices for about 5 mins on each side until golden brown and soft – you’ll need to add more oil between batches. Remove from the pan and set aside. Fry the onion in the remaining oil until soft, about 8 mins. Add the garlic and cook for another min or 2. Stir in the coriander, chopped tomatoes, molasses and some seasoning. Simmer for 15 mins until you have a thick, rich sauce. Stir in the mint leaves. Heat a drizzle more oil in a pan and fry the halloumi slices for 2 mins on each side until golden brown. Set aside with the aubergine. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Roll out the pastry to a rectangle, 50 x 25cm, and cut into two squares (don’t worry about all the edges being neat at this stage). Place one on a baking sheet lined with parchment. Layer the tomato sauce, aubergine, halloumi and a scattering of pine nuts (in that order) onto the middle of the pastry, leaving a border around the edge, about 1.5cm. Keep layering until the ingredients have all been used up. Brush the edges with a little egg. Roll the second sheet a little larger, then lift over the pie and press down the edges to seal. Neaten the edges with a knife, then brush the whole pie with more egg. Score fine lines over the top with your knife to decorate, making sure you don’t pierce the pastry. Cut a small cross in the centre of the pie and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Bake for 30-35 mins until golden brown.

Rougham Control Tower Aviation Museum So We Continue!!
Our May Message – Stay at Home, Save Lives, Protect the NHS, Control the Virus. So, again, in accordance with the National situation, the museum will remain closed until further notice. We hope you are keeping safe and well. This time of restraint means we have a responsibility to protect the lives if others – friends, colleagues, families – everyone! There will be times in the future when we will be together again, times to enjoy each other’s company and times to reflect at the museum. Please stay safe so you can join us when we open. On a very positive note, in a previous article I mentioned how a Memorial for ‘Mission Mistress’ was to be erected. Our latest update from Michelle Chopping is “The planning permission has been granted but unfortunately this has been put on hold. I had hoped for it to be completed in July this year but as things stand this will not be possible. The completed granite with the engraving takes 4 months to complete. The granite was ordered just before lockdown, but even if the work were completed in the coming months it would be nicer to make it a special day with special people. At the moment this would not be possible, so the intention is possibly for next spring/summer. I am so looking forward to seeing through.” This is a brilliant project that Michelle has organised and we look forward to seeing this new memorial. Please watch this space for updates.

POSTCARD CLUB To give an insight into the wide variety of postcard topics collected by our members, we begin with David Romano, who writes: Collecting Postcards. It’s not just the image side of old postcards that are interesting. The messages are, too. I collect cards posted during the First World War – English, French, from the Front. Many that I turn up are as dull as the ones we write today – raining now, went paddling yesterday, how’s Uncle Bert’s gout? But just sometimes, someone opens up – so ‘I think the war news is good on the whole, don’t you? Of course, the July advance has cost us many lives, but we have to sacrifice in order to obtain anything that is really of value, don’t we? Several young men from our town have been killed, including the brothers of two girls whom I teach at Sunday School. It is a very difficult time, isn’t it?’ That writer was struggling.

What’s been happening at...
HARDWICK Primary School As you will be aware the Government announced plans for schools to open to more pupils from 1st June, specifically the initial return of children from Reception, Year 1 and 6. We worked through the numerous pieces of guidance from the DfE and formulated a plan which took into account the guidance and the safety and well-being of children, staff and parents. This involved a huge amount of work, carrying out risk assessments, and initiating measures to minimise the risks to children, parents and staff to enable a manageable return to school. The whole phased return for the designated year groups returning has been a massive military style logistical operation with the brilliant Senior Leadership Team and all staff totally dedicated to its success. From arrival and collection arrangements, formulating class “bubbles” to ensure safe distancing, one way systems, hygiene and cleaning routines the planning has been meticulous. Importantly the provision for Key Worker pupils continues with ever increasing numbers attending, as well as the crucial home learning arrangements for Years 2, 3, 4 and 5. It has been a massive unprecedented challenge for the school, indeed for every educational facility, since lockdown we have been open every weekday even during the Easter holidays. Those learning at home have had plans, activities, resources, support and feedback there have been phone calls, mental health and wellbeing support, and as always encouragement. Staff that have been in school have been amazing with the children helping them smile and help them learn, trying to normalise life. Believe me, we all want children back in school, we all want to do the job we love doing but we want everyone to be safe in doing so. We’ve been on call all day, every day for the best part of three months while juggling own home commitments, at Hardwick we will do whatever we need to do in this next phase with professionalism, compassion and enthusiasm because simply... teachers are all superheroes in disguise and our children mini individual miracles. JUNE’S TIPS FOR A GREENER ENERGY SUPPLY.
These unprecedented times have given many of us a moment to reflect on the future.
We are all saddened by the terrible effect of COVID 19 and hope for a conclusion as soon as is safely possible. If there are any positives to take from the last 2 months then one of them is the cleaner air we now breathe and the reduction of greenhouse gas output. This month I will give a brief outline of energy companies producing the greenest electricity and if you have a chance please think about a change.

Energy companies generally use a range of fuels to produce electricity, these include coal, natural gas, nuclear, renewables (e.g. wind / solar) and others. Each of these fuels produces carbon dioxide (the main greenhouse gas causing climate change) during the production of energy and according to the ratio of these fuel sources each company has a greater or lesser greenhouse gas impact. Please see the table on the right - this table shows the grams of Carbon Dioxide produced for every kWh of electricity produced (see last months’ article ref. kWh). The lower the output, the greener the company. Companies using a lot of coal and / or natural gas are more polluting than companies using more renewable energy sources. There are now several companies that only use renewable sources to produce electricity these include – Ecotricity (the pioneer in this field), Octopus, Ebrico, and Bulb. Of course energy coming from the grid is not direct from the electricity supplier but you can be happy in the thought that all the electricity your green supplier adds to the grid is coming from renewable sources.
I have been using one of these suppliers for 10 years and if you have the inclination please give them a go. Stay safe!

What to do in your garden this June...
I suspect that with the continuing Covid 19 Pandemic those of us fortunate enough to have gardens will be spending more time than ever in them. With the longest daylight hours of the year June is the month to really enjoy your garden. Hopefully many of you will be growing fruit and vegetables and you will have been able to watch the progress of any seeds or bulbs that you have planted. As I write this there has been no brown bin collection in recent months so many of us will have a big heap of green garden waste. I hope some of you have started a compost heap as there is no better way to deal with your green waste. Good Gardening!

l Use your hoe regularly to get on top of the annual weeds which seem to spring up overnight! l Do a night patrol with a torch and the kids to collect slugs and snails. Empty contents on to bird table in the morning! l Remove blanket weed from ponds and add to your compost heap l Many house plants will enjoy a few weeks outdoors in June as long as you remember to water them.
l Pinch out any side shoots from your tomato plants. You can pot these up to create new tomato plants. Start to feed once the first truss is setting fruit. l Harvest salad crops, and resow every 2 weeks for a constant supply of tasty leaves. l Protect your currant fruits from the birds with netting l Peg down runners on your strawberry plants to create more plants for next year. If you don’t need more plants simply remove the strawberry runners completely. l Sow outdoors: Beetroot, carrots, courgettes, French beans, lettuce, marrow, pak choi, peas, pumpkins, radish, runner beans, salad leaves, sweetcorn and turnips. l Keep an eye on your onion and garlic. When the leaves start to yellow and die back, they’re ready to harvest. l Earth up potatoes as they grow creating a trench either side l If you have apple trees you will notice the June drop when small apples will naturally fall from a cluster. However you can improve the quality and size of your apples by removing more.

Flower Garden l The risk of frost is over so full steam ahead now with planting containers and hanging baskets with summer bedding plants l When your Hardy Geraniums have finished flowering you can cut them back for a second, smaller flush of flowers and fresh foliage. l Remove dead foliage from your spring flowering bulbs but only after it has died back naturally. l Divide big clumps of Aubretia l Plant some Nicotiana for some evening scent

VE DAY
Last month we had the 75th Anniversary of VE Day. This was marked in inimitable style all across Moreton Hall. We had our own socially distanced celebrations in Kembold Close, with almost the whole street gathering to mark this important occasion and participating in the two minute silence from our driveways. I was due to have the last of my Mayoral engagements for the civic year at the cathedral, but this was so amazing in these troubled times and it was touching for all of us to spend time with our friends and neighbours.
To Bee or not to Bee
Residents around the Wagtail area may have noticed a small area of cordoned-off grass, we also have some around the Audi garage. This was an extended and ongoing project after our local woodlands hero, Nick Sibbett, posted on the Moreton Hall Voice Facebook page that he’d spotted a Bee Orchid in the grass verges. I put out a message to all and we also found some more. With the help of Simon Ingram (thanks!) we’ve made sure this protected and the rare species will be able to now fully grow and reproduce this year. If you spot any nature in need of protection on council ground, please get in touch as we’re mapping them.

At District Council, it has been business as usual as much as possible, relatively speaking. We have been using Teams to communicate. At Town Council, we have used delegated powers and virtual tools to carry on with important work. Cllr Kevin Hind has done an amazing job collating our planning responses. We have deferred physical meetings, obviously. This has meant an extension to the civic year and the side-effect that I will remain as Chair and Mayor until we are able to legally meet for decision making. This is being reviewed tri-weekly in line with central government. 48 | JUNE 2020
BORED GAMES Quick Covid update. Thanks to those participating in the support schemes and again thanks to David and Anna. I’ve been part of a buddy scheme for contacting isolated or elderly residents for contact chats, for instance. We have had some very innovative projects from locals to keep our morale up, such as our anonymous(?!) board game donor or Leon’s “Bartrupski Kitchen” virtual nightclub! I’m also going to thank local heroes Adrian and Colin. You know what for ;).
Friendly Neighbourhood Fibre-man At time of writing, the City Fibre infrastructure works are ongoing and have reached us here in the “old” part of Moreton Hall near the pub. I’ve had lots of feedback from everyone on the standard of their work. To remind you, they committed to restoring pavements and verges, which has largely happened, however we have had some snagging issues which I’ve been compiling and reporting on your behalf - indeed this has taken several days after around a dozen issues have been found so far, including boxes sinking into the ground and raised ironworks on Bederic Close. I’ll continue to represent us to the City Fibre board, so please get in touch if you wish to escalate anything.

MORETON HALL Dear Friends, Maybe, just maybe, we are beginning to see some light at the end of the tunnel. As I write we are beginning to see a relaxation of the government’s guidelines on the pandemic. Now we must pray urgently that there is not a second spike; that suddenly more people start contracting the virus and, of course, dying from it. At Christ Church, Moreton Hall, we have been very pleased to be part of the local authority’s care programme and through our networks we have supported those who are vulnerable and isolated. I would think that this ministry will need to continue for the next few months and it is my hope and prayer that it will continue after the pandemic is over. Loneliness is one of the biggest problems we face on Moreton Hall. There are many people who may be at work but live alone and many people who are retired and living on their own a long way from friends and family. It has been a surprise to find how many people need our help and support at this time. One of the biggest enemies to good friendship and good neighbourliness is our own busyness. Probably one of the greatest benefits of the pandemic is that all of us have had to slow down, stop and reflect and think about how we live our lives and who and what is important to us. We should not just switch back to our old lifestyle when this is over. There is a very strong probability that we will not go back to how we were before. Certainly the airlines and the holiday system we once had will not be there and maybe not for many years yet. I think cheap flights will probably be a thing of the past.

Many people are asking ‘where is God in all this?’ It has been interesting to note ever since we have been televising our services and doing thoughtfor-the-day how many people have got in contact with the church to watch and pray with us. National statistics say that there has been a 25% increase in church attendance through online services and it is estimated that over half the population of the country has been praying regularly. There has been a launch of new prayer apps Like the bible in one year (BIOY)See https://justdisciple.com/christianprayer-app/ which you might like to consider. So, part of the answer to ‘where is God?’ is that He has been right alongside you. For many people He has become for the first time a living reality and for others He has become more real than ever before. That is a friendship worth cultivating and retaining once the pandemic is over. In my long years as a priest I have noted people have come to me in great distress and asked for prayer, which I have been glad to give, but when the crisis is over we do not see them again.
I hope it will be different this time. While many people have died, and our hearts go out to the bereaved and those who have lost so much, God has also saved many more through the NHS. There are many people who have encountered the virus now giving heart-felt thanks for saving their loved ones. God has not abandoned us. He has stood with us. He wants to lead us into a better world. If we can learn the right lessons from the pandemic and build up our community lives and have more time for each other that will please Him. I think if we put less trust in our technologies and our systems which have not proved adequate for the challenge and put more trust in Him we will build a better world, a more tolerant world, a more understanding world and, if I might say so, a more blessed one. Don’t count the days. Make the days count. Alison Burgess, Family and Community Worker at Southgate Church writes … Who could have guessed, just a few months ago, that life would have changed for us all so dramatically. Not just us, but the whole world. These are days that will go down in the history books. Since lockdown was announced in March, all Southgate Church’s youth and children’s groups have stopped meeting together, as they were used to. But… this hasn’t kept us apart! Our work is continuing, albeit in new and different ways. Early in lockdown, I came across this quote ‘Don’t count the days. Make the days count.’ Since then, we’ve really tried to live that out in the work we’ve been doing.
Sunday Club Each week, the Sunday Club team send out
activity packs to children and young people. The packs include a bible story, crafts and activities. We get together on Zoom on Sunday afternoons too which has been lots of fun.
SPOTS (parents, carers and toddlers group) I take my hat off
to parents everywhere! You are doing an amazing job! We’ve been keeping in touch with families and toddlers from our Spots group by sending them weekly letters, crafts and even recipes for budding bakers. We get together on Zoom for a story and singing time too. It’s been wonderful to receive photos of the children enjoying the crafts and activities they’ve been sent.
Youth Club and Liquid – We’ve been keeping in touch with the young people in our youth groups through weekly letters and activity packs delivered to their homes. We’ve a sunflower growing competition in full flow (or should that be full grow!) we had our own VE Day celebration, we celebrated Star Wars Day and we even had best selling author Bob Hartman, join us on Zoom for Storytelling Week. Our letters and Zoom meet ups have been a great way for the young people to keep in touch, have some fun and create a sense of togetherness even though we are apart. Nobody knows how long this stange time in our lives is going to last but we hope that despite the difficulties, we’ll all have some positive memories to look back on, and know that through this time, we made the days count. Christian Aid Week was scheduled for 10th to 16th May and normally there would have been a house collection in this area organised by Southgate Church. This year it has had to be cancelled due to the Coronavirus, but Christian Aid still needs to raise money to help support projects in the poorest countries around the world.
