Hello and welcome to our June issue. Here at the directory, we would like to wish all our younger readers very good luck if taking their GCSE or A levels this month. ELECTION

Well itâ€™s all over and Moreton Hall has the same three councillors, that will give us continuity. Just to let people know why I stood as an Independent, both my wife and I have been Conservatives for over 30 years, Patsy has been the councillor for Eastgate Ward for 16 years, myself for 20 years and were reselected to stand again for Moreton Hall. We assumed we would be standing for the ward we represented but no, the then Chairman of the Bury Conservative Party had other ideas, he decided that both Patsy and I would stand for Moreton Hall. I objected, but was told that there was no other choice, I was not happy about this and we decided to stand as independents, the result of which was that I was returned, but Patsy lost by 3 votes, to say she was upset is an understatement. I am still a conservative at heart and hope to return if allowed, but I will carry out my duty and support the wishes of the people of Moreton Hall. That said, the three councillors for town are Pete Thompson, Tony Whittingham and Cyrille Bouche. I would like to thank you all for your votes and I will endeavour to serve you to the best of my ability over the next four years.

The play park on Heldhaw Road is open but the grass needs cutting again, I am not very happy with the state it is in and shall ask the Parks Manager to come and see for himself and hopefully we can get it sorted out. We are having problems on the park near Skyliner Way, complaints about anti-social behaviour, damage caused by youths, broken glass and dog foul. I will speak to the Council Families Officers and see how we can address this problem. I would ask anyone who sees or hears about people misbehaving to let me know.

YOUTH CLUB

The club is doing fine, we have a healthy number of children attending again, mainly girls, but a couple of boys, hopefully more will join. The building is unused almost every day so anyone who would like to hire it please contact Patsy at the following email address: patsywarby@yahoo. co.uk for more information. That’s about it for the club news.

UPDATE ON BOY RACERS

The injunction seems to be holding up, I have had no comments regarding cars racing around or late night disturbances, update on the three guys with the air rifles, they went to court and had the weapons confiscated and destroyed, two were given community service and fines, hopefully we will not have trouble with this again.

SAFETY & SECURITY There have been a few attempted break in’s in and around the estate with vans, sheds and houses. It’s funny that as soon as we get some good weather the thieving starts. Some people are blaming the fact that the lights are going out at 11.30pm and not midnight, having spoken with police, they say that there is no reason to believe this is correct. Most of the break in’s happen in the afternoon, so just be careful, make sure your house and gardens are secure.

You may have noticed some extra works on our pavements around the estate. We have funding at Town Council which was set up last year for additional works to minor defects to “Pavements and Public Spaces” which the County Council feel are minor enough to bump down the list (i.e. leave). Without wishing to open the floodgates, as we appreciate the whole area needs attention, please feel free to suggest areas to us, your Town Councillors (you can get me on 07810 868986) where you feel resurfacing is necessary. This doesn’t remove the obligation for the County to perform their job on highways, of course, and their work will be unaffected - this is an additional project to improve our area. 14 | JUNE 2019

Our recent local election is now over. Congratulations to those who won their seats for the next four years and commiserations to those who have left their posts, either by choice or on the vote. I’m sorry to report that Moreton Hall Councillors Clive and Patsy no longer sit on the Town Council, however my good friend and now colleague, Tony Whittingham will be joining me in serving our area. Thank you to everyone who gave me their vote and I pledge to do the very best that I can to serve Moreton Hall over the next four years.

At the local elections for West Suffolk Council on the 2nd May Trevor Beckwith, Frank Warby and Peter Thompson were re-elected as our Moreton Hall representatives on West Suffolk Council. On the Town Council there were three candidates for three seats so Cyrille BouchĂŠ, Peter Thompson and Tony Whittingham were returned unopposed. Patsy Warby and Clive Springett, previously town councillors are not on the Town Council now, but thanks are due to them for their hard work on behalf of the community over many years. Street Lights are a current topic of conversation. These are a County Council responsibility and let our County Councillor Trevor Beckwith have your comments. Trevor can be contacted at trevor.beckwith@suffolk.gov.uk. Trevor in conjunction with the Residents Association is pushing for a meeting with the Safety and Speed Management team at Suffolk County Council to discuss the noticeable increase in Heavy Goods Vehicles using Orttewell Road as a short cut through what is a residential area with houses and the playground very close to the road. W hat’s been happening at...

ABBOTS GREEN Academy This month at Abbots Green we would like to share our Entrepreneur skills! At Abbots Green, children are proud to take on roles throughout the school. We believe that every child from Reception to Year 6 should aspire to taking on roles and responsibilities ranging from Eco Warriors, Playground Rangers, Charity Committee members or in this case join the Tuck Shop Team. Children at Abbots Green are proud to take on the role of managing the schools Tuck Shop Budget to provide the school with tuck each week. As part of this role, children carry out the task of managing the financial spreadsheets to ensure that they will be making profit as well as getting the best deal for playground snacks. In doing this, the children quickly price match products to ensure that when the online shop is ordered they get the best value for money. As one child said ‘we know that popcorn is the most favourite snack so when it is on offer we buy in bulk!’ As if this isn’t enough, using the profit, children have developed their idea further. As a team, the children now plan into their weekly Maths session an opportunity to purchase fruit as an additional item available on entry for visitors arriving to the school. As a school, Abbots Green is proud to eat fruit and vegetables for snack only; with this in mind the Tuck Shop Team decided that they would encourage others to do so too! Mrs Morrison, Headteacher, has been thrilled with how motivated the children have been to take responsibility for their own Tuck Shop ‘not only does this give children an opportunity to understand the value for money but also share our vision and ethos with the others too!’ If you would like to come and visit the school to find out more about exciting learning opportunities with a rich purposeful curriculum at the heart of it, please do not hesitate to contact the school office on 01284 718818 or at office@abbotsgreenacademy.co.uk.

More cowslips please!

ver thgge last few weeks, we’ve seen cowslips across Moreton Hall. At Natterer’s Wood, in the grass at Woodland Ways Pond, and in their thousands at ten-acre field. The Junior Parkrun has carefully avoided the cowslips in its routes, althogh some of the spectastors have not scrupled to trample. Cowslips were originally named ‘cowslops’, or cow-pats, because they grow well in cattle-grazed pastures. They grow well in hay meadows too, and the annual late-summer hay cut by St Edmundsbury Borough Council in ten-acre field is just right for these small flowers with their yellow petal-lobes each with an orange spot at its base. We can make cowslips the Moreton Hall flower! The cowslips at ten-acre field do not need seed every year to grow the next year, so here’s an opportunity to spread this delightful

wild plant across our estate. You can collect seeds for the flowerhead after the flowers have faded to leave the dull brown pod. Just sprinkle them on some grass where it won’t be mown in the spring until at least June - maybe in your lawn if you don’t want to use your lawnmower next spring! Or find somewhere else with a long grass policy and sprinkle the seeds. Regularly mown playing fields, for example, won’t be suitable but anywhere with longer grass is worth a try. The polyanthus, so common in garden centres as a pot plant or a bedding plant, was developed from cowslips hybridised with primroses and to keep our long grass speaces wild, its not a good idea to do some gardening and plant some polyanthus. Let’s get wild cowslips growing everywhere and make Moreton Hall an even better place!

This month we wanted to tell you just how your donations help us to help others here at the hospital. This is Benny’s story told in the words of his Mum and Dad… “In November 2016 my 10 month old son, Benny, was admitted to the rainbow ward as he was having difficulty breathing. He was diagnosed with bronchiolitis and initially started on oxygen, via a nasal cannula, and observed overnight. By the morning his lungs were struggling to work and he was becoming very tired. The Doctors explained that he needed more support with his breathing and they were going to give him hi flow therapy. This meant putting him on an Airvo 2 machine which helped support his breathing more than giving him oxygen via the nasal cannula. It was a really scary time for us all but the Airvo 2 helped him so much and allowed his body to rest so he had the strength to get better and prevented him from having to be transferred to another hospital for more invasive treatment. If it wasn’t for kind generous people like you, Benny would not have been able to use the Airvo that helped save his live. We are so grateful to you for donating to My WiSH Charity and to the rainbow ward for looking after our precious little boy. Benny is now fit and well, and it is so important to support this wonderful charity as you never know when your

child might need to use a piece of equipment they’ve purchased. Spring has finally sprung... The days are gradually lengthening so doing outdoor activities are becoming more inviting to do. Those of you who enjoy gardening, do remember to wear gardening gloves and appropriate footwear to help protect your skin from getting scratched, stung or damaged. If your skin suffers damage, then treat it straight away with an antiseptic solution/wipe, a medicinal cream that is suitable for you to use, and cover with a plaster/ dressing to prevent any further infection of the affected area. If you need advice on skin damage then do contact the West Suffolk Lymphoedema Service who can advise on the best action to take.

LSS 3rd June meeting Paul Watson, Director of Programmes & Advocacy, from the charity Lepra will be speaking at LSSâ€™s 3rd June meeting. Lepra is the charity that LSS, WSLS and the Ipswich Hospital Lymphoedema Service all support by collecting old compression garments for re-use. The charity works in India supporting and enabling those who suffer with Lymphatic Filariasis (LF), sometimes known as Elephantiasis. Do bring along any old (clean) used compression garments to hand to Lepra to help with their work.

Pebble Beach is an amazing golf course with its small greens, fast fairways, great bunkering and of course for the US OPEN brutally long rough it always makes for an amazing tournament. The biggest question is who will capture the third major championship of 2019? Will Tiger find his form again around a course he loves? Will Brooks continue his run in major

Coaches Corner – How to get out of the ROUGH!! So with the US OPEN on the television and you all seeing the worlds best have to recover from the rough, I have listed below some helpful tips from escaping these

HEALTH & BEAUTY tricky lies. If you put these simply tips into play next time you’re in a tricky spot in the rough, you will find yourself back in play and making better scores.

DON’Ts Don’t try and help it up and out… you have changed your set up to help yourself come down steeper so don’t try and help it out, and lean back. Just commit to these changes and swing down and through the shot, try not to let your weight fall onto your back foot.

DOs Don’t get too brave from these lies, select enough loft to get the ball from these lies. After selecting a club opening face slightly will allow you to stop the club head closing at impact by the longer grass length. Re position your weight, shift across onto your lead foot. This will allow you to create a steeper angle of attack into the ball and with the lofted club you have selected will give you a great chance to escape this lie. Swing steeper and hold on tight, being steeper and holding it a bit tighter to the club through impact will help you stop the clubface closing through impact.

Do not expect full control over this shot, remember it’s a shot you’re either trying to get back into position or are happy if it hits the green or surrounding areas. If you achieve to much from these lies then you will often find yourself playing the same shot again or worse, get back in play first before taking on shots to the flag. Hopefully putting these simply steps into your game when you need to escape some tricky lies will help. If you are having problems with this or any other part of your game, then I would be pleased to assist you in enjoying this game more. As this should be the most important aspect for anyone’s round of golf. CPSG hold out a hand of friendship and support to people living in long term pain however it is not something we dwell on when we come together. Seeing the person is our main focus, not their condition although saying that there are opportunities at meetings to reach out to others in similar positions, to engage in positive conversation and to be accepted as you are. Social interaction plays an important role and we have many a laugh together. Speakers are varied and in May a dance facilitator joined us with the ethos of looking at ways to help ourselves feel better more often. Bringing the focus to the breath and with music aiming to encourage subtle shifts away from our heads and overthinking, and more towards feeling settled and relaxed in our bodies. Movement with structure and routine to encourage presence and focus (being danced, seated or standing), and in contrast also something more, free-flowing and creative for the soul! Using an eclectic mix of music and dance styles as a starting point with a good amount of social interaction and fun throughout the session. Also being encouraged to work at our own level and in our own comfort. To bring the session to an end we did a sequence using rhythm sticks. All members participated in this creative style of movement to music in their own way and it was really joyful. Having someone with their own struggles with pain and fatigue who feels great admiration for what we do and always enjoys meeting everyone when facilitating for our group is truly special and very welcome. 28 | JUNE 2019

Positively Crafty Silk painting was achieved in the May session, as you can see from the photos many designs were available to choose from. We always find when doing this members are totally absorbed in creating a colourful palette and concentration is key to maintaining clean lines. Fatherâ€™s Day falls in June so card making is the theme for that session and in July we will be creating flowers with velum.

The next session takes place on Thursday 6th June from 1pm-4pm. Refreshments included. The next CPSG meeting takes place on Thursday 20th June from 2pm-4pm and the speaker will be a charitable organisation, one that provides a very important service to people and one to support. Open Day Success Despite Chilly Conditions On Sunday, nearly 160 visitors braved the chilly conditions to try their hand at sailing at the St Edmundsbury Sailing & Canoeing Association’s (SESCA) Open Day at Lackford Lake, near Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. The event formed part of the Royal Yachting Association’s ‘Push The Boat Out’ initiative to encourage everyone to get out on the water and celebrate sailing and boating. During May, sailing clubs and water sports centres across the country are opening their doors and inviting the public to come along and try sailing for free. Mike Steele, SESCA’s event organiser, said: ‘Everybody seems to have thoroughly enjoyed themselves and spoke enthusiastically about their experience and impressions of the Club. It was great to see so many people out on the water enjoying themselves. SESCA is located in a beautiful part of West Suffolk, on the edge of a wildlife reserve. We had a total of 156 visitors and gave 144 sailing tasters. The kayaking also proved very popular. We received payment for one family membership on the day and four other families indicated that they intend to join. A further 30 visitors took away membership application forms, which bodes well.’ The Club is very grateful to Haart Bury St Edmunds, who kindly provided ‘For Sail’ signs to help promote the event; BBC Radio Suffolk, who invited SESCA to talk about the ‘Push The Boat Out’ in Suffolk on their Sunday morning programme; SESCA Group Members: WASH

Sailability, who took out visitors in their disabled sailing Access dinghies and the Mildenhall and Newmarket Sea Cadets, who provided a colourful display of their water sports activities on the Lake. SESCA is one of the most isolated sailing clubs in the country. It is the only sailing club in West and Mid Suffolk and SW Norfolk. It prides itself on being accessible to all with very low membership fees and a fleet of Club boats available for members to hire at token cost. Anyone who missed the Open Day is most welcome to visit the Club to find out more about it’s activities.

SESCA’s 7th Antigua Sailing Day Regatta The St Edmundsbury Sailing and Canoeing Association’s ‘7th Antigua Sailing Day Regatta’ will be held on Sunday 2nd June at Lackford Lake, 5 miles NW of Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. The Regatta was initiated six years ago as a fun event to celebrate and coincide with Antigua Sailing Week in the Caribbean. Amazingly, through a Google alert, reports of the Regatta came to the attention of the Antigua Sailing Week Race Committee and the Antigua & Barbuda Tourism Authority, who were so impressed with the initiative that they kindly offered to come on-board as event sponsors. Visitors and spectators are welcome but no dogs are permitted on site as the Club is in a nature reserve. 30 | JUNE 2019

Any type of traumatic injury, such as a fall, can cause capillaries (small blood vessels) near your skin’s surface to break and leak red blood cells. This causes the reddish-purple or “black and blue” appearance of bruises on your skin. Technically known as contusions, bruises may result from virtually any injury to blood vessels in your skin. As your body begins to heal, and metabolises the blood cells, the bruise will typically fade to a green, yellow or brown colour before disappearing entirely. It’s virtually inevitable that you’ll get a bruise once in a while, but if you have bruises appearing often and can’t figure out why, there could be an underlying reason. You may have simply bumped your arm or leg and forgotten, or it could be something else entirely. 32 | JUNE 2019

What Causes Easy Bruising? There are many reasons why you become more prone to bruising, with old age, genetics, having pale skin, increased strain during exercise and sun damage being some of the most common. Some diseases

may make you more prone to easy bruising too so if in doubt, it’s worth getting checked by a doctor. Taking medications like aspirin, anti-platelet agents or anticoagulant medications could make you prone to bruising as well.

Reasons You May Bruise Easily Your Age:

As you get older, your skin loses some of the protective fatty layer that provides cushioning against bumps and falls. Your skin also becomes thinner while the production of collagen slows. This means that it generally takes much less force to cause a bruise than it did when you were younger.

Purpuric Dermatosis: This vascular condition, which is more common in the elderly, causes thousands of tiny bruises, often on your shins. The bruises are the result of blood leaking out of small capillaries.

Blood Disorders: Blood disorders can cause unexplained bruising, often because your blood fails to clot properly. If you have severe and frequent unexplained bruising, it’s a good idea to see a doctor to rule out such disorders, especially if it seemed to come on suddenly.

People with diabetes may develop dark skin discolourations, often in areas where skin touches other skin frequently. These discolourations may be mistaken for bruises, but they are actually due to underlying insulin resistance. Excessive Straining During Exercise: Putting your muscles under excessive strain, such as may occur during heavy weight lifting, can cause blood vessels to burst and lead to bruising. Microscopic tears in your muscle fibre caused by exercise can also cause bruises. In addition, if you engage in sports or vigorous exercise, you may be exposed to bumps and small traumas that cause bruises but not remember the actual impacts.

Certain Medications:

Medications such as aspirin, anticoagulant medications, and anti-platelet agents reduce your blood’s clotting ability and make bruising more likely. Medications including aspirin, prednisone,

prednisolone, oral contraceptives, and others may also weaken your blood vessels, which increases the likelihood of bruises.

Family History: If you have close family members that tend to bruise easily, there’s a chance you will too (although there are usually steps you can take to overcome this potential genetic tendency).

Pale Skin: Pale skin doesn’t make you more prone to bruising, but it does make any bruises you do get more visible than they would be on someone with darker skin.

Sun Damage: While your body needs regular sun exposure to produce vitamin D (and get a host of additional benefits), excessive sun exposure – especially the type that leads to burning – can cause your skin to lose its pliability and resilience. This, in turn, makes bruising easier and more noticeable.

With yet another May Bank Holiday and the obliguratory sunday afternoon spent with friends in the beer garden of our local, there was only one thing to do the following monday morning with a slight hangover... a full english breakfast with the husband! By Sally Walters

So... after dragging ourselves out of bed early (well before midday!), we decided to go across town and visit Glasswells Cafe for, what I can only describe as, a very relaxing, well worth the travel, yummy breakfast. As you walk through the shop, browsing the beautiful furniture displayed all over their very large showroom, you can find the cafe set just on the right hand side, and as soon as you get there you can smell the fresh coffee brewing and the aroma of the kitchen cooking an array of wonderfully fresh food. We were greeted by the very smartly dressed staff, they welcome you with a smile, and let you take yourself off to a table of your choice, within seconds of sitting down we are shown the menu and left to decide for a minute or so, before being asked if we would like to order, yes, they come to you! No queuing here with trays and waiting impatiently whilst the customer in front decides

whether they want a latte or hot chocolate, this is a totally stress free experience! After deciding on both a full english breakfast, large for my husband with a pot of tea, and the smaller option for myself, with a mocha, if you are like me and love coffee but love hot chocolate just as much, this is the choice for you! The best of both worlds! Our friendly waitress takes our orders and we did not have to wait very long for our coffees to come, followed shortly by our very much needed breakfasts. It wasn’t that busy but can imagine on a saturday or sunday morning it may have been much more hectic, but the service, I am sure, will be just as good! After clearing our plates, we both agreed they were yummy, and we were very satisfied with our choice, I just wish I had room to sample one of the many home baked cakes that were

displayed at the counter, they all looked delicious! Next time, and yes, I will be going back, I will make sure I skip the breakfast and go straight for the sweet or just make sure I have plenty of room for both! A Cream Tea with a Scone is only £4.15 per person or I may even have to try out their Afternoon Tea offer, for only £19.95 per person this sounds like a lovely treat, for my upcoming birthday maybe, hint hint!! There verdict is, we would definitely go back to Glasswells as we felt that it was very good service, and for the extra waitress service you get there compared to most instore cafes around the area, the prices were exceptional. We are giving Glasswells Café a very well deserved 10/10.

As regular readers will know, I am a fan of ICE Cook School so, when the culinarily skilful chaps over there announced that they would be opening a café, I was certain we would be in for a treat! Of course, I couldn’t wait to get in to see what delights would be on offer so when Sarah, a director of ICE, suggested a ‘working lunch’ we jumped at the chance and went along to see what they had been busy doing! Located a stone’s throw from Moreton Hall on Rougham Industrial Estate, ICE Café offers a funky, vibrant setting with something yummy for all tastes and appetites. Myself and Sally went along for lunch on a Tuesday shortly after they had opened their doors. We were greeted by friendly staff and quickly shown to our table. The menu is varied. I am fairly particular (AKA fussy) but there was plenty I wanted to try. I settled on a classic – Chicken Burger with ‘posh’ chips. Sally chose the macaroni cheese with pulled pork (and chips on the side for good measure!!) The portions were generous without being silly. The food was utterly delicious. To wash it down we both chose a cocktail from the virgin menu. I had a raspberry lemonade and Sally a sweet fruity concoction. They could have been improved by a bit of alcohol but, we may not have made it back to office if we had gone down that path! The food was delicious but there was no space for dessert – that will have to be a separate visit! With the welcoming atmosphere and the excellent bike routes from Bury St Edmunds, ICE Café would be the perfect family treat. The children’s menu is varied with more than the standard ‘chicken nuggets’ and includes starter/main/ dessert/drink. Clearly set up to cater for smaller diners, there is even a small sized table and chairs for them to enjoy their meals independently whilst the grown ups enjoy theirs! Marshmallow & strawberry kebabs Having a barbecue but not sure what to serve as dessert? Toast up these sweet skewers with salted caramel drizzle

Ingredients:

20 marshmallows 16 strawberries, hulled Â˝ x 397g can NestlĂŠ Carnation Caramel toasted hazelnuts or crumbled biscuits, for sprinkling (optional)

Method:

Thread 4 long metal skewers with 5 marshmallows and 4 hulled strawberries each. Carefully hold over a campfire or gas stove, turning slowly, until the marshmallows are toasted. Stir a pinch of salt into caramel and drizzle over the top. Sprinkle with hazelnuts or biscuits, if you like. The marshmallows will be very hot, so allow to cool for a min or so before eating. 44 | JUNE 2019

Karate Club News A massive congratulations goes to our club member Ruby Hunt this month, who won a gold medal in Cyprus on Sunday 5th of May, at the prestigious World Karate Federation Youth League K1, which is karateâ€™s equivalent of the world premier league. Ruby had to win 5 tough fights for the gold medal, beating Cyprus 11-1, Russia 2-1, Greece 6-2, Russia 3-0 and USA 4-3. She fought in the 12-13 year old -42kg category and received a black eye along the way for her trouble. Ruby has a busy year ahead defending her title as English and British Champion and competing for a place in the England Team going to the World Championships in Chile this October! Good luck Ruby - we will keep you all posted with her achievements. What’s so good about Pilates? Although Pilates does not have the ancient lineage of yoga, it still aims to improve overall wellbeing by adding an element of focus and awareness of our bodies, as we work them. This awareness promotes a sense of wellbeing, allowing us to recognise our limits and potential, whilst working with our bodies to tone and sculpt in ways that hopefully reduce the chances of injury. Joseph Pilates developed his revolutionary method of fitness in the early part of the last century. Following a sickly childhood Joseph became interested in health for the body, heart and mind. He began working on a series of exercises to help him develop the body he wanted, over the years the positive results of his programme became evident to the military, later gathering an extensive celebrity following of the rich and famous.

These days, Pilates classes are readily available across the world. A little research will show the many benefits and differences, reformer classes use machines for resistance and strengthening, others use mat work and equipment such as balls, straps and hoops to the same effect. It takes around 14 sessions to really notice the physical changes of a flatter stomach, better posture and tighter core. You should also notice an increase in energy and greater mindbody connection as your body becomes sculpted and toned. Core strength is the key, stronger tummy muscles means better deportment and less pressure on the back. Classes are designed to create a lean toned body rather than build bulk and muscle, the strength of a ballet dancer compared to a wrestler!

Classes are suitable for everyone, no matter what level of fitness you are in. Every teacher has their own style and you may want to try a few different classes before you find the right teacher for you. Find out a bit about your teacher, why they decided to train, how long they have been working and what they hope their students will achieve. You need someone who is committed to helping you become the best version of you possible. Top tip: If you feel a bit nervous a beginner’s class may take off the pressure to help you relax and enjoy taking care of yourself. Yes, a very BIG Thank You. How many visitors have we had? Over 300 in 5 weeks AND additional visits from veterans and groups. Thank you again for this brilliant support. A very, very warm welcome to all. It has been a great pleasure to welcome Vets, families and friends, with a past link to the airfield and local area to the Museum. Recently Graham, Clifford and other volunteers hosted a party American visitors (pictured below). They included Tail Gunner Stu Bachmann (seated on the left) with Crew Chief Ray Duncan (in the middle). These ex-servicemen were from the 487th BG based at Lavenham 1944-45.

Graham said “Crew Chief Ray Duncan and Tail Gunner Stu Bachmann, along with Jerry Ogle President of the 487th BG Association, enjoyed their visit with family members. Ray and Stu are amazingly sprightly for gentlemen in there 90’s. Ray witnessed General F W Castle boarding “444” on 24th December 1944, the mission in which he (Castle) failed to return. It was an honour and a privilege to show them around, thanks go to Clifford, Wendy and Richard for keeping them entertained.”

The Icini Group (MG Car owners) enjoyed the great weather of a typical British Summer Day (Bright, sunny but Chilly!). About 40 vehicles (with drivers and passengers) – from MG’s to Jag’s - descended on our Tea Room. Having these classic vehicles parked around the Tower creates a fabulous atmosphere and gives great photo opportunities.

ow, the climate change agenda has really taken centre stage in the last few months. We gave you a few ideas to help you reduce your CO2 imprint in April, and this month we are ramping it up. Just remember our saying ‘lots of small changes equal a big change’, together we can all make a difference.

1 Think before you buy that plastic bottle of water Each 1 litre bottle creates a whopping 250g CO2, that’s 1,000 times more than water from your tap. Four of those a week is 52kg CO2 a year. Simple solution, carry your own (metal) water bottle.

2 Reduce your time under the power shower

If you reduce your shower time from 8 minutes to 4 minutes, you save around 68 litres of water every time. That’s also a massive 245kg CO2 per year from reduced water and energy use.

A few weekends back I was at The Hadleigh Show running a craft activity inside the Education tent. The theme was ‘farm to fork’ and we did some vegetable stamping. I thought I would share it with you this month, and perhaps you could make a bookmark for dad this Fathers Day or use the technique on a card for someone special.

YOU WILL NEED: a sheet of A4 white card cut into landscape strips approximately 5 cm wide, a carrot or parsnip, some ribbon, a hole punch, an ink pad either black, red or yellow and a black felt tip pen n Punch a hole in the top of the strip of card in the middle if you can n Slice the end off the carrot or parsnip and dip in the stamp pad n Press firmly onto the card n Repeat as many times as you can fit on. Remember to leave space around the outside for legs etc n Using a black pen draw on the eyes, striped, dots, legs etc n Thread some ribbon in the top of the bookmark. You could always laminate the bookmark too so it lasts longer. JUNE 2019 | 59

O Keep rows of onions well watered if it is dry O Earth up potatoes O If you have apple trees you will notice the June drop when small apples will naturally fall from a cluster. However you can improve the quality and size of your apples by removing more.

Sybil Andrews Academy

The headteacher of a Bury St Edmunds school has taken part in a topping out ceremony to celebrate the final beam being laid during the construction of one of two new teaching blocks. Trenica King, headteacher at Sybil Andrews Academy, attended the ceremony to mark the milestone and see the progress of the buildings. “It is very exciting to watch the new teaching blocks take shape as we prepare to welcome more young students to the school,” she said. Barnes Construction, which built the academy on the Moreton Hall estate in 2016, is the main contractor for the new project, which will provide additional classrooms, staff rooms and break-out areas for the school. It will also see the expansion of the school’s external sport facilities to include a multi-use games area. Mark Bailey, director at Barnes Construction, said: “It is great to be back helping the academy further expand their facilities. Work is progressing well, and the team is working hard to ensure that the first block is up and ready by September.”

THE RUNNING MAN BY ANDREW SOUTHWOOD

was running the Boston marathon. Okay, so it was Boston in Lincolnshire… but I couldn’t justify the carbon footprint of a flight to Massachusetts. Anyway, the UK race was as flat as a pancake and had great pb potential, so I was excited. Training started in earnest in early December, some 5 months before race day. I had invested 1000’s of tough miles and 100’s hours of precious time. It’s no surprise that my nerves were showing as I shuffled about on the market place start line in Boston town centre, that cool Sunday morning. My race strategy was instilled in my mind – months in the planning. I knew exactly what I wanted to do, now I simply had to execute it. Fast fwd 20+ miles to the business end of the race. I had flash backs to monstrous treadmill sessions, tough long runs, dog attacks and my winter cross country racing. The end was coming and I was damn sure I wasn’t going 68 | JUNE 2019

to cave in now. Think of the rewards, think of the postrace calories, think of the facebook status! Essentially, think of anything to take the mind off the pain and almost overwhelming urge to stop. Finally some company, as a fellow runner pulls alongside. We exchange grimaces and silently share a bottle of water as we run past the final water station. No words are needed. We are both facing our inner demons, racing the clock, not each other. Unexpectedly we find ourselves passing 2 broken men. Walking or perhaps crawling the last 2 miles. They had pushed themselves beyond their limits. Such is the nature of this brutal distance. A stark reminder that the line between personal records and complete implosion are impossibly close. As with any marathon the last mile is agony. My legs filled with Lead and form

that of a drunk spider monkey. Re-entering the town centre we last saw over 2hrs ago, the modest but enthusiastic crowds urge me on. I high five a couple of youngsters on the way through, or maybe I slapped them in the face?! It’s all a bit of a blur if I’m honest. I cross the line and collapse onto the metal barrier a few feet away. The elderly lady who was handing out the finisher’s medals checks on me. I hold onto her and sob with joy/relief/pain. I am physically and emotionally utterly wrecked. She spoke some kind motherly words to me and let me cry some more. “It’s ok dear. You take as long as you like…”. I have no idea who she was, but I will remember that moment for the rest of my life. For the record, I finished with a pb by several minutes (2hr 47min). I gave it everything I had, which is all you can do isn’t it… until next time at least.

CRICKET CLUB

Bury St Edmunds Cricket Club have made a very promising start to the 2019 season winning two of the first 4 games and rain preventing a win in the one abandoned match. The first match proved an excellent away win at Horsford the home team were bowled out for 199 with wickets spread around 3 good catches taken by George Loyd. The Bury innings stuttered losing 2 early wickets but on debut Ben Seabrook made 104 not out well supported by fellow debutant Daniel Moriarty with 65 not out in fact almost all the runs were scored by new players as Justin Broad had made 19. Swardeston played well to win a week later despite Bury scoring 241.7. The game away to Copdock was rain effected having bowled the home team out 121 that included 3 wickets for Alistair Allchin and 5 catches behind the stumps by Alfie Marston Bury were just short of the target when the match was abandoned, a week later Bury won an important toss at Mildenhall which was followed by a very good performance the home side were all out for 93 with some superb bowling from Sean Cooper (3.7) who incidentally had played for England Over 50â€™s in Australia in the winter he was well supported by the other bowlers.

Bury scored the runs for 5 wickets to win and reach the dizzy heights of 3rd in the East Anglian Premier League. The 2nd XI have won 3 and lost 1 of their first 5 matches having also had a game lost to the weather. With 4 Saturdays teams and 2 Sunday teams to field most weeks the club could still like some more players so by all means if you want a game or know someone who would like to play make contact with me at david@ ejbarker.co.uk or on 07876 496064 . Abbey Gardens improvements to offer more to visitors The Abbey Gardens in Bury St Edmunds will be improved with a new information point and plant sales area to offer even more of an attraction to visitors. The Abbey Gardens, part of the former Abbey of St Edmund founded 999 years ago, attracts more than 1.2 million visits per year with the footfall recorded at its entrances. One of the big attractions of the Abbey Gardens is the floral displays looked after by the West Suffolk Council Parks Team and a team of volunteers. People are also interested in the history of the Abbey and finding out more information about the area. The aviary also continues to be popular and while it will remain, part of it which has stood empty for more than five years, is to be demolished over the next few weeks. That will make space for the installation of the new visitor information point and plant sales area. While plants have been sold in the gardens for many years, a lack of space in the rangers hut by the bowls green has meant that they have had to be moved in and out of the building at the beginning and end of each day. The new modular building, which will have a sedum roof, will overcome this and allow the plants to be displayed much better. The new facility will be operated by the Parks Team, and will replace the rangers hut which is no longer fit for 76 | JUNE 2019

purpose. A decision on the future use of the old rangers hut has not yet been made. The existing kiosk, known as The Garden Café, sells ice cream, lollies and drinks and is expected to stay open throughout the construction work which it is hoped will be completed by early in the school summer holidays. A spokesman for the West Suffolk Council said: “The Abbey Gardens and the wider historic fabric and heritage of the Abbey of St Edmund continues to be a popular attraction for local residents and visitors alike. “We recognise that people visit the gardens for leisure activities as well as to relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings and that is why we are continuing to invest in its facilities as well as building new tennis courts on the site of the former Eastgate Nurseries on the other side of the river. “West Suffolk Council is a member of the Abbey of St Edmund Heritage Partnership, set up to help people better understand the life and times of St Edmund and the Medieval Abbey and to ensure its conservation for future generations to enjoy. Further improvements will be made in the area as the work of the Heritage Partnership progresses including a series of community celebrations next year to mark 1000 years since the foundation of the Abbey.”

Christ Church MORETON HALL June is a very special month in the church’s calendar. First we want to give thanks to God for all the money that was collected during Christian Aid Week. Then it’s the Birthday of the world wide Church. For Many the most important Christian festivals are Christmas; when Jesus is born and Easter, when we remember both His death and resurrection for the salvation of the world. However, for the church the feast of Pentecost is just as important as the other two because on that day the church began. Up until then the followed Jesus thought of them as being Jewish. On the day of Pentecost something extraordinary happened. Fire came down from heaven. the disciples found could speak in other tongues. They were al empowered and equipped to go out into the world and share the gospel. And because they did, we are all here today.

Jesus promised that the church would do even greater things than He had done. That is why at Christ Church, Moreton Hall, Sunday by Sunday we are committed to the healing ministry. We have seen a steady flow of people come forward and receive relief from suffering including physical, mental and emotional pain. We have also found that when we pray for people who want to receive more of God, the Holy Spirit comes upon them as powerfully as He did on the day of Pentecost. On this 9th June there are two special occasions I would like to invite you to. At 10:30 AM Christ Church, Moreton Hall, we are going to have a Pentecost celebration day. We will not only celebrate what God has done in our lives, but we rejoice in what God has done across the world through the universal church. The second is that at 4.00 p.m. in the Cathedral there is a special service called “Catch the Fire” when the whole diocese comes together to celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit.

There was something else about Pentecost which was really important and is often not understood. For now God the Holy Spirit, came down and dwelt amongst His people. The Jews had been used to worshipping Father God in heaven. The disciples knew that God was present with them as Jesus Christ. Now the third member of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit, had come to meet them, but not in a body like Jesus. He came into their hearts, minds and souls. Christians know that not only does God dwell with them, but somehow He is inside them changing them and improving them.

These two special services are the culmination of ten days of prayer which begin on 30th May on the Feast of Ascension. For 10 days together with the whole Anglican Communion and many other denominations, people will have been praying ‘Thy Kingdom Come’. We are praying for people to become Christians as they did on that first day and as they have done ever since all over the world.

Now because Christians are filled with the presence of God their lives should be totally transformed to be as Christ-like as possible. So now they are equipped to do many of the things Jesus Christ did. In fact,

Churches Together is an affiliation of Christian Churches of all denominations, in town and village churches in and around Bury St. Edmunds.

All churches are welcome to bring gazebos (in case of heat or showers), and their own church banner if you have one, and drinking water will be available.

Our next big event is planned to be a Summer Celebration in the Abbey Gardens on the afternoon of Sunday 30th June.

Of course, everyone can use the café to get tea/ ice creams, and the public toilets are nearby.

All the churches, as well as individuals, are invited to bring a picnic to have on the grass near the ‘Dovecote’ (to the left of the play area as you approach through the gardens from the Abbeygate). There will be a stage, and some churches will have a music slot to sing and play including some worship songs. This will be an opportunity to hear various styles of worship. This will be from 1.00 pm until 4.00 pm. At 4.15 pm we shall have a joint ‘Songs of Praise’ service with a choice of hymns/songs from different churches.
