Welcome to the JULY ISSUE
What a great start to the month, we can go shopping and finally get our hair cut, and best of all.... the pubs are now open! With all this change, things feel like they are starting to go back to some sort of new normal, although we are still not out of the woods, so please stay safe and follow the government guidelines. With any luck, in next month’s magazine, more businesses will be able to open and we can bring you more news about what’s open and places to go, perhaps we’ll all be able to enjoy the rest of the summer out and about a bit more. Moreton Hall Community Centre
OPENING SATURDAY JULY 4th The Moreton Hall community centre and social club have both been closed since lockdown started. So as the rest of the world starts to take tentative steps to re-open, we feel we can do so as well. Of course, all this is subject to government regulations and at the time of writing we are still a little in the dark as to what these will be. But we have been making plans and changes. We are incredibly happy to say that we plan to re-open the social club on Saturday 4th July from 3.00pm until 11.00pm. We will operate on reduced hours as well and the other days we will open are Fridays 4.00pm to 11.00pm and Sundays 12.00 midday to 8.00pm. These hours will remain in place until the centre is fully open and being used by our evening hire groups and once the local pool and darts leagues return to action. We will have to operate differently. The club will be open to “members only”. Memberships are available. We will be working with a small reduction in products available for sale due to reduced operating hours. The seating capacity inside the clubroom will be reduced and like a number of other establishments we will operate a one-way system of movement around the room. There are other measures we have taken and a few changes that we have made. With effect from Monday 6th July the community centre will be open as normal. All hire groups have been informed of this and these groups will now consider their options to see if they are able to return. The individual group organisers will be contacting their groups. Nobody knows when weddings and parties will be allowed. We have been taking bookings for 2021 and 2022 so if you are looking to book an event it maybe worthwhile taking time to contact us to find out about availability. However you use the community centre we look forward to seeing you soon and your support will be greatly appreciated.

Dear reader, It’s been a tough few months for us all but life is slowly returning to normal. The hospital doors are, once again, beginning to open to appointments and daily tests and, as a team we are starting to return to our familiar charity roles. One of the things I will take away from the Covid-19 pandemic though is community spirit. You have all been amazing. Right back in March, when the first patients started arriving at the hospital and the world started to close down, we launched our Help your NHS hospital appeal. The aim of this appeal was to enable us to support West Suffolk Foundation NHS Trust where it needed it. In the beginning we had no idea what this would be, what would help or where would support be needed? You gave so generously though that, when requests started to come in, we were able to immediately help. One project we are really proud of are the ‘Calm Rooms’ we have provided to both West Suffolk and Newmarket Hospitals. These quiet rooms have peaceful lighting, comfortable chairs, things to help distract such as colouring books and pebbles for staff to decorate. The idea is that they are non-covid areas so staff can ditch the PPE, not talk about coronavirus and just destress and recharge before heading back to the ward. Feedback has been amazing and we hope we can keep one or two going forward as working in a hospital is never an easy task, pandemic or not! We have also been ensuring our isolated patients are cared for. It must have been really hard for patients facing days alone in a side room without visitors for company. We have purchased lots of things to keep them amused including TVs with DVD players, arts and crafts including paint by numbers and easels and a couple of Amazon Fires. We have also teamed up with the hospitals Keeping in Touch team who have been

working hard to ensure patients stay connected. They are even offering a FaceTime/Zoom service so loved ones can video chat, thank goodness for modern technology hey! Our part in this is to send a Knitted Heart. A relative orders a heart for the patient and we send one to them too. This has been so successful we hope to continue it in the future. We even managed to connect a family whose mum/nan has been in the hospital. The family live in Dubai, Hong Kong and Turkey so are unable to get over to visit which has been so hard for them but receiving the hearts has been really special and we know their mum was thrilled. I can’t finish without thanking our amazing and crazy fundraisers who have continued to walk/run/cycle/swim and even canoe for our appeal. Those who have crafted and created, everything from ear savers to scrubs to knitted hearts and to those who have donated wonderful hampers and goodies for our staff. Your generosity knows no bounds. We know your donations and support are a huge boost to the hospital staff. To know they are supported by the community of west Suffolk makes their tough jobs that little bit easier. It is an amazing place to work and every cog in the wheel is vital. Lots of us have learnt new roles over the past few months but it has been fantastic to get to know so many new people in the Trust and I know we have made some lifelong friendships along the way. You may have seen the amazing poppy display along Rougham Tower Avenue this month. Ordinarily, this ground would be under crop and in the future there are industrial units and an innovation centre in planning, so this will be a rare sight. It was nice to see it coincide with the 76th anniversary of D Day, too.
SOFA, NO GOOD
To Bee or not to Bee - (Bee!)
On the same subject as litter, we also saw last month an abandoned sofa on the ground behind Sealey Tools. There is a lovely pond and an area which seems to be well used by bikes. We’ve seen awareness of the patch of land grow through lockdown as people are out walking, which has had the downside that the resident swans that were there seem to have moved on and we have seen some waste there. Unfortunately, there was an abandoned sofa thrown in the pond and at time of writing we’re having a bit of a job retrieving it. The bed of the pond is very soft so getting it out isn’t easy, plus I have no real worker support from operations at council as that patch of land is privately owned. I have traced the ownership and written to them to grow some awareness about the maintenance of the area.
I’ve written about the protection we have tried to implement to our rare flowering plants in Moreton Hall. As with the poppies, we can see some wildflowers growing in the drainage verges near Rougham Airfield, including camomile. This shows what we could achieve in other areas of the estate. I understand we lost some bee orchids near Matalan, but the mapping worked next to Desira on Bedingfeld Way (pictured) and Wagtail Drive. We have them in flower and hopefully they’ll lay seed. We also have pyramid orchids growing near Natterers Wood. Amazing!
The Litter End The Way you Snake We always get litter issues as the weather improves and people are out and about (and throwing litter everywhere!) The public bins are on a regular emptying schedule and are occasionally overwhelmed. With lockdown, there are more people out and about and walking or cycling, enjoying the sun. I had the bin at Heldhaw park changed for a larger capacity type. Thanks to Barry and Harry for their impromptu litter pick at Appledown where they cleared 4 binbags full. 14 | JULY 2020

Jade Cox has done a sterling job in organising and promoting the Moreton Hall snake, which is on the walkway near Sycamore Drive. We’re trying to get the snake set in concrete to have a more permanent reminder of the work the children have done during lockdown and to have a positive memory. Great work (especially the red one)!
Speaking Frankly
I just want to take a second to thank Frank Warby for the decades of selfless public service he has perfomed for all of us in Moreton Hall. He’ll be missed greatly at Council.
TOWN COUNCIL MOVE
This month, we have moved office. We’re now tenants at the Guildhall Trust, 79 Whiting St, which will shortly be accessible (at a social distance, of course) by the public. It’s a very exciting move, making us anchor tenants to help keep the Guildhall financially viable, as well as giving us a bigger, more flexible space with much better value for the taxpayer. Most of all, it puts a sitting council back in the Guildhall after a hiatus of only about 400 years!

W The Community has been well served by our 3 local businesses at Lawson Place since the lockdown. Congratulations to all the staff and management at our local Tesco’s, all at Hubbard’s butchers and Juliet at the post office. The Coffee House has now reopened for takeaways. Support your local business’s at Lawson Place. There has been no response from Suffolk County Council about the HGV traffic to date. Having said that the County Council are undertaking a review of the Lorry Management Network better described as an HGV review. The technical aspects of the review are continuing but the second part the community led review has been postponed till May 2021 at the earliest. If you have any problems with HGVS these can be reported on line at: https://www.suffolk.gov.uk/roadsand-transport/lorry-management/ report-a-heavy-goods-vehicleincident/ Civil Parking enforcement has now come into force. This is being run by West Suffolk Council who have taken over parking enforcement from the police. On Moreton Hall the ticket machines have been installed but not yet brought into use. Parking will continue to be free with the 3-hour limit remaining but you will need to enter your vehicle registration number 16 | JULY 2020
and print off a ticket. The Club and Community centre will issue permits for events. Litter has noticeably increased since the easing of restrictions. There are plenty of litter bins around and it remains a mystery as to why they are not used. The other option is taking your litter home with you and using your own bin.

SOUTHGATE’S NOWTON ESTATE ZOO TRAIL We’re all going to the Zoo tomorrow, Zoo tomorrow, how about you? … and you could have stayed all day! All the popular animal visitor attractions may be temporarily closed but residents in the Southgate area created their own zoo environments over the May Bank Holiday weekend where visitors could be transported to different continents spotting their favourite animals. The Zoo Trail was the brainchild of local resident Jessica Rudd whose initial idea on Facebook created a huge amount of interest with some 24 roads, walks and closes and over 50 homes over the whole area eventually taking part in the creative extravaganza. Front gardens were transformed in an innovative way to have some fun whilst social distancing but still getting out and about. A zoo map of houses taking part, children’s activity sheet with a checklist of animals spotted as well as strict instructions not to enter enclosures and not to touch the animals as they may bite made it a fantastic family adventure and hundreds toured the area over the three days. Jessica was thrilled with the response “I thought then it was a great idea to get children and adults out doing something different whilst abiding by the current social distancing rules! I’ve recently had a baby and thought that I could organise it whilst I’m at home more and not having to juggle work and home schooling like most parents currently are during the lockdown. I used to be a children’s nanny so also understand how hard it can be to keep children entertained and find free events to attend, let alone during a world pandemic!! I have been blown away by the response! We ended up with over 65 animals being on display at over 50 addresses! Residents have been excited to join in with creating zoo enclosures. Many of them have enlisted the help of their children to create animals and fact boards! The Zoo Trail has been a lot of fun and also very educational. Quite a few families have said they incorporated the zoo trail into their home schooling for their children! It’s been wonderful to see lots of people smiling during these uncertain and difficult times. I think it has given most people a project to get stuck into and an event to look forward to that suits everyone!” The feedback has been all positive so with this success, Jessica is organising a follow up over the August Bank Holiday weekend.

NEWS In last months edition I mentioned the Zoo Trail that Jessica Rudd, a resident on the Nowton Estate, was organising for May bank holiday weekend. This was a brilliant event, supported by over 50 households and visited by lots of residents and visitors to the area. Not only was this a fun event but it was educational as lots of information was provided about the animals. AlongCaie Walk there was a real horse in a garden, much to the delight of the children - and adults! Patrick and I would like to thank Jessica for all her hard work bringing this fun event together and for everyone who took part in making it such a success. Keeping with the animal theme, another resident - Fay Lambert - has started a rock snake along Caie Walk on the Nowton Estate where children (and adults) can paint stones and place them on the footpath to create a snake. So far in excess of 200 stones have been painted and placed and Fay has also very kindly offered a small prize for a competition for the under 16’s to create a Nowton Rock Snake poster. Again, thank you to Fay for organising this and to all who havepainted stones but keep painting as there’s a long way to go before it reaches Southgate Community Centre! Last week Patrick and I had our first councillor walkabout since before lockdown - socially distanced of course. We picked up on a few issues raised by residents but also some we noticed whilst walking around, these were mostly footpaths, potholes and trees. I have been made aware that not all households are receiving this Directory so I have arranged for a bundle to be left at McColls each month where free copies can be collected. WHERE HAVE THE CHAFFINCHES GONE?
C
haffinches are familiar to many, widespread across Moreton Hall, but are in crisis. Their pinkishorange undersides, grey hoodie and white flash on their sides make them as beautiful as a robin, but perhaps a little understated as they feed in our gardens, in our shrubs and on our bird feeders. The Garden Birdwatch scheme has several participants in Moreton Hall and the survey findings are grim. In the period 2012 to 2018, chaffinch numbers fell by 30% and no-one knows why. One possible cause might be the trichomonosis disease which has killed 67% of our greenfinches since 2007. Its a disease
that causes lesions in the throat that can cause a diseased bird from swallowing its food. When the disease it bad, the bird has to spit out the food, which is then available for another bird to eat and pick up the disease itself. did it take five years for the disease to get into the chaffinch population, or is there an unrelated cause? Research is starting in to this mystery, looking for patterns such as greater declines in areas where diseased greenfinches are more common. Are there differences between townie chaffinches and countryside chaffinches are bird feeders actually a problem in attracting birds to form disease hotspots? Are there
reasons unrelated to the disease, such as reduced food availability or climate extremes affecting reproductive success or survival rates? When the reasons for the decline become clearer, there’s a chance that something can be done about it. In the meantime, we can keep an eye out for these lovely little birds, or listen to their chaffy-chaffy-chaffychaffy-CHAFFfinch song in the woods, hedges and gardens that make up Moreton Hall. There are chaffinches living in Natterer’s Wood now that couldn’t live there before Woodland Ways planted it with trees, so there is at least a new habitat for the survivors.

West Suffolk Lymphoedema Service (WSLS) Update WSLS continues to be as busy as ever albeit in a different guise. One of the members of the team that had been seconded to work at West Suffolk Hospital has rejoined WSLS couple of weeks ago, so there are now two team members that are doing telephone consultations for those who are due for review as well as going on quite a significant number of home visits for those who need to be seen urgently - either as new referrals or whose condition merits a visit if it is safe to do so. Another member of the team, who was seconded to work at West Suffolk Hospital, also will be rejoining the team for 3 days a week soon. New referrals have continued to come in every week, if fewer than normal, although they seem to be on the increase again now. If you have any queries or issues regarding your condition then contact WSLS on 01284 712732 and leave a message. You will then be contacted by one of the team who will either offer advice, order more garments if appropriate or arrange a home visit if necessary. With regards to clinics reopening, although some locations are restarting community clinics WSLS remains under the guidance of WSFT and have been advised that at present there are no plans to restart routine clinics until after 31 July. Obviously significant work is going on in the background to risk assess all clinic locations and to ensure that the correct measures are in place to minimise any risk of infection. This means that the number of patients that WSLS will be able to see per clinic will reduce and telephone/video consultations may continue for the foreseeable future. Do please stay safe and well.

CPSG is run for patients with chronic pain and run solely by patients with chronic pain. Our main objectives are to bring people together who are suffering this debilitating condition within a ‘safe’ environment, to be able to share concerns and ideas, build friendships and for you to know you are not alone. The group is designed to encompass all needs for all age ranges (18+) and genders. We have a very relaxed attitude - it’s all about feeling comfortable with others and sharing time together. People gain a considerable amount from being able to meet other people in similar circumstances. We are a warm, welcoming and friendly group offering regular get togethers, social engagement, a change of focus and support. The atmosphere created is a warm hearted sociable blend to encourage positive feelings. Members are there for each other and we do our best to ensure meetings run smoothly and are enjoyable to attend. Coming together on a regular basis helps prevent isolation and loneliness. Throughout this crisis social engagement and being regularly connected to others have held some members together who have felt very fragile and very much alone. Fear has crept in that this will continue and they will become isolated. This can become overwhelming and can take an emotional toll so before it spirals into a panic reach out for support. Someone to whom you can talk openly to and share your concerns. Someone you know well enough and who will be there for you. Knowing you are not alone in your struggle can not only help you but them as well. People are what make the experience succeed - choose them wisely - look for the good - be understanding - be there for each other - have a sense of purpose - focus on the here and now treat yourself kindly. The challenge group are still achieving crafting tasks from needle felting to designing a bracelet to making love tokens to planting up pots to continue making cards to scrapbooks of their time in lockdown to finishing off a tissue box cover to writing a poem to making a face out of vegetables/garden materials to Origami. It is all about being creative and thinking of ways to adapt crafts by using alternative materials and enhance them with added materials. You can turn your hand to most things if you put your mind to it and more importantly give it a go to have some fun. Crafting is the original concept of this group that keeps the connection going as well as giving the people themselves one-to-one support, encouragement and a helping hand or word of comfort in times of need. Being there for each other and listening has been vital to each others wellbeing also they are being urged to keep going when times have been really tough. This has been a lifeline and having someone to turn to when you are at your lowest ebb can be a real saviour in this time of crisis. CPSG meetings will remain postponed until the autumn. HEALTH & BEAUTY Welcome back to the 19th hole, and once again the weather has been great for us golfers. We have also seen the introduction of three and four balls again, which has allowed us all to play the sport we love and see friends and family. As golfers I believe we are in a privileged position to be allowed to do this and enjoy our leisure time and long may this continue. This month I should be previewing THE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP, however this event has been postponed until 2021. So you are going to have to wait a year until you get to see Royal St Georges in all its glory.
ROYAL ST GORGES PREVIEW Founded in 1887 and intended by its founder, Dr William Laidlaw Purves, to be a rival to St Andrew’s in the South of England, St George’s is consistently ranked amongst the leading courses in the World. The Club occupies a unique place in the history of golf, for it was here in 1894, that the Open Championship was first played outside Scotland. In all there have been 14 Open Championships played at St George’s, more than any course outside of Scotland. The Open Championship returns to St George’s for the 15th time now in 2021, when the Club will host the 149th Open Championship GOLF IS BACK! Golf has returned to our screens but not as we know it just yet. It was great to see the PGA tour golf return in June, but personally I thought it looked a little strange to see no fans and not here any reaction to shots that were hit. However in time this will return and things will go back to normal, whatever normal will be after all this is over. Fingers crossed we get back there as soon as it is safe to do so. This month we are going to look at the importance of having a consistent pre shot routine that you can stick to no matter what is happening around you. So we are going to break this section of your preparation into TWO areas. We are going to have a THINK ZONE and a PLAYING ZONE. THINK ZONE As you can see from the image the THINK zone away from the golf ball. This can be behind the ball like I am here or wherever you want to do your thinking elements.
In this zone you are looking to complete all parts of your preparation such as. - JUDGING CONDITIONS - DISTANCE - AIM - CLUB SELECTION - SWING THOUGHTS Once this area has been completed and you’re ready to move to the playing zone there should be no more thoughts that run through your mind. PLAYING ZONE This zone is now the point of no return, and you are just here to execute the plan you have made for yourself in the THINK zone. If you have any negative thoughts, doubts or anything else that is stopping you from hitting your shot then you need to return to the THINK zone and start the process again. The PLAYING zone is for just that PLAYING golf, move into the ZONE and HIT THE SHOT. I would suggest putting your golf bag between your THINKING and PLAYING zones to act as a barrier and to set your point of no return. Now you need to test what is going to be included in your pre shot routine. Make your plan and stick to this in every situation you find yourself in on the golf course. SUMMER SQUASH, MINT, AND PECORINO PASTA
Squash, mint, and lemon juice lighten up this fresh summer pasta made in under 30 minutes for the perfect weeknight meal.
INGREDIENTS: 12 oz rigatoni 2 tbsp olive oil 1 shallot, halved and thinly sliced 1 1/2 lb. zucchini and summer squash (about 4 small), thinly sliced into halfmoons Kosher salt and pepper 3 oz. pecorino cheese (about 1 cup), grated, plus more for serving 1/3 cup of mint, thinly sliced
METHOD: Cook pasta per package directions. Reserve ž cup cooking liquid, then drain. Meanwhile, heat oil in large, deep skillet on medium. Cook shallot, stirring occasionally, until golden brown, 3 to 4 minutes. Add squash and ½ teaspoon each salt and pepper and cook, tossing occasionally, until squash is very tender but still holds its shape, 10 to 12 minutes. Add pasta to skillet and toss with squash and cheese, adding reserved cooking liquid 2 tablespoons at a time, to form a sauce that coats pasta. Fold in mint and lemon juice. Top with additional cheese and black pepper if desired.

I am so glad that the brown bins are again being emptied, the amount of garden waste that has ben dumped is staggering, gardens are pristine but the poor woods suffered, the worst case is the dumping of a large sofa in the water hole near Suffolk Park, the pond is a lovely beauty spot with plenty of wild life, ducks, swans, more hens, hares, rabbits and butterflies. Please respect our nature areas.

You might have noticed the grey meters going up in our car parks, I believe they are to control the parking because people are misusing the three hour stay and parking all day, When I have more information I will let you know. ROAD WORKS Many complaints about the road works going on at present sadly it is important work if you want a faster broadband, as they say you can’t make an omelette without breaking some eggs so be patient the guys are working as fast as they can and then you can surf the net with super speed.

Old problem is back
I enclose part of an email I received from a local resident, A gentleman and his daughter were walking their dog on Ten Acre field, they decided to play catch with a tennis ball when their dog was attacked by another persons dog, the dog also bit the man on the leg. The daughter ran after the dogs owner and explained what happened, the owner denied that their dog would bite or attack anyone, refused to help and just walked off. Ten Acre Field is a great place to walk your dog but please take control of your dog and clean up their mess, remember children also play up there. While I am on about Ten Acre, can I remind people that there is a law against lighting fires or BBQs. At the beginning of June some people bought a BBQ and had a little feast leaving behind the BBQ which was new and left their empty can and bottles for someone else to clear up.
Retirement After a combined service of 36 years my wife and I have decided to retire from public service, we have seen our estate grow and develop, watched children become adults. We are very proud to have served our community and although we are no longer councillors, we will still be here to help anyone who needs us. I would like to thank all those who supported us through 36 years plus. Thank You.

What’s been happening at...
HARDWICK Primary School After much planning and a nervous start we have opened our doors once again to Reception, Year 1 and Year 6 children who wished to return to school alongside pupils of key workers. It was not long before the Hardwick team spirit kicked in and our super resilient children and staff adapted to the new way of life. As you can see pupils were so very happy to be back at school, all the detailed planning by staff worked wonderfully with safe distancing , one way traffic, cleaning, and working in “bubbles” successfully and seamlessly effective. JULY’S MEAT EATING TIPS TO HELP REDUCE YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT
A
t last we are feeling our way out of lockdown and learning to live with the new normal. As previously mentioned one of the positives that has come out of the pandemic is a slow down of pollution, particularly green house gas production, the driver of climate change. This month Ecofrenzy will take a quick look at the impact of meat production on carbon dioxide equivalent emissions . After reading this you may think it is a good time to change your meat eating habits.

We are all hearing that eating meat (especially beef) and consuming dairy products is disastrous for climate change. After a lot of digging into this subject, we at Ecofrenzy have to agree. To give you a simple visual idea of methane emissions (21 times more potent that carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas) from some of our most popular meat and dairy sources please have a look at this illustration. This shows the disproportionate emissions from cows compared to pigs and suggests that meat eaters could have a significant effect on their carbon emissions by a) eating pork instead of beef b) eating meat less frequently.

If we now scale it up to a global level according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation the livestock industry contributes around 14.5% of greenhouse gases to our atmosphere, that’s a staggering 7.1 billion tonnes of CO2e. This table gives a more detailed break-down according to species output: We appreciate that many people love meat and are by no means suggesting that everyone should embrace a vegetarian lifestyle, but we are suggesting at least a change in our meat eating habits may be good for our future. We would love to hear back from you if you decide to change to a less impacting type of meat, both positive and negative. There is of course an added bonus that you could save money in the process. a white plastic spork (a spoon and fork combined) I have lots FREE at my studio if you need one just message me. Red pipe cleaner, blue, red and white clay, glue, googly eyes, large wooden lollipop stick and pens to decorate with a rainbow. n Stick the google eyes on n Use a pink felt tip to add rosy cheeks n Roll the blue clay into a thin snake and curve into the mouth. Glue in place.
n Roll the red clay into a thin snake and position as eyebrows. Glue in place.
n Twist the red pipe cleaner around the
handle and fold the ends into 3 circles to make the hands

Sadly all our WI meetings have been cancelled since April until further notice, however, members have been keeping in touch via the internet and monthly FULL PAGE FLIGHT LAB newsletters. Luckily we have been blessed with lovely sunny weather most of the time which helps to keep everyone’s spirits up. Our newsletters have contained favourite recipes for others to try out, quizzes, puzzles and riddles and snippets about the many and varied things everyone has found to do. One of our ladies has decided to wear a different item of her jewellery We have amused ourselves by having a ‘virtual’ Easter Bonnet parade in April (see picture below). We received requests for help sewing scrubs for the NHS and several ladies were able to assist. Face masks have been made, squares have been knitted which I have joined together to make lap blankets for dementia patients at West Suffolk Hospital also knitted teddies for anyone who needs one! Needless to say, we are looking forward to the time when we can reinstate our monthly meetings.

Our Message continues – Stay at Home, Save Lives, Protect the NHS, Control the Virus. Hello and welcome to the July edition of our Museum Bulletin. I and other members are remaining safe, looking forward to being ‘let out’ into our history at the Museum! In accordance with the National situation, the museum will remain closed until further notice. With some relaxation of restrictions we await guidance as to when we can welcome you all. We hope you are keeping safe and well. This time of restraint means we have a responsibility to protect the lives if others – friends, colleagues, families – everyone! If it is possible we might be able to open in August but we will not jeopardies anyone’s safety by rushing into an unsafe situation. Further updates will follow when available, please watch our web site and Facebook page. Information for events is starting to emerge, some good and some not so good. Unfortunately our ‘Echoes Of The Past’ in August will not take place; hopefully a date in 2021 will be scheduled. The proposed ‘Airfield FlyIn’ on the 19th and 20th September in still ON – more details to follow. Last year this event broke the previous record for visiting aircraft with 150 over the two days. Fair weather will hopefully exceed this number. Our annual Departures Memorial in December is ON – Sunday 13th 11.00am. This is the opportunity to remember those who contributed so much during WWII. We look forward to this special day. As the Museum is recognised as a memorial, it is fitting that we always remember the dedication and service of all members of the services, National and International. It was with great sadness that we received the news from USAAF Lakenheath of the loss of a pilot. First Lt. Kenneth ‘Kage’ Allen, assistant chief of weapons and tactics for the 493rd Fighter Squadron, was killed when his F-15C Eagle went

down on June 15th. Our condolences go to his wife, Hannah, his family, friends and base colleagues at this time. As I mentioned previously, we have also had direct contact with individuals and families who have experienced the effects of this horrible Covid-19 infection. Our prayers go to all those who have contact with affected folk and families – we wish them all a speedy recovery. For those who wish to ‘hear and see’ more of the Museum our first ‘new’ newsletter has been released. It is in ‘electronic form’ and can be found on both the Museum Facebook page and the RCTAM94th web site. If you have difficulty finding or opening this please contact us via the e-mail address below. We can then send the link to you. This is a great read with plenty of airfield and squadron historical information. We hope you enjoy it. MORETON HALL We live in frustrating times. I cannot begin to describe the measure of frustration so many people are feeling. Frustration about being confined; frustration about being alone; frustration of being afraid of what might happen when you meet people; frustration over low employment, no employment or, in some cases, even more employment than they had before because everybody is bombarding them with emails and extra work. We have had a number of lectures and programmes on the television talking about our wellbeing and offering advice on how to deal with all the difficulties we have. But the real problem with frustration is that without realising it often we say and do things which are not really representative of how we feel about something or someone. We find that once a word is spoken or an action taken, it is very difficult to call it back. If we were not so frustrated we would never have said, or done things like that. Often when we are depressed, upset and angry we want a focus, someone or something to blame. Once we have decided what that is sometimes our actions and words are disproportionate to the issue in hand and innocent and worthy people get hurt. We need to guard against the ill effects of frustration which can often lead to a judgemental spirit; angry words and wrong actions can lead to a breakdown of family and community life.
As a Christian I believe that wellbeing is not a gift that you generate by yourself, but comes to you from God. Only when you have a right relationship with Him can you have right relationships with those around you. Equally God calls us seek to have good relationships with others so we can have a good relationship with Him. As we have been studying the Psalms, we have seen that David plumbs the depths of human despair, frustration, anger and disappointment. Yet he always turns his thoughts back to God to seek forgiveness for himself and trust God to deal with David’s problem situations. David also sees that God is Lord of all and has love in His heart for every single one of us. David never asks for an opportunity to take revenge but rather hands over all the frustrations, disappointments and dangers to God to deal with in His own way and in His good time. As a Christian who has worked ecumenically for most of my ministry, I have found in the Church there are people with very diverse religious and political views who nonetheless come together in their worship and service to God. But I have learnt that while everybody does seem to have a dark side, and can think say, and do things they shouldn’t, they also have a tremendous amount of good in them.

A case in point is Winston Churchill. In recent years he has become a national icon who provided hope and certainty in a very dark and difficult time. But he also had a dark side. I grew up in a home, that while they thought very highly of Winston Churchill, they were under no illusions about some of his attitudes and beliefs, which kept him out of office in the 1930s. It was because of this, there were grave reservations over his appointment as Prime Minister in 1940. He probably lost the election in 1945 for the same reasons. We should bear that lesson in mind when we deal with everyone around us, particularly those who offer so much in public service. Everybody who does good, occasionally makes mistakes and says and does things that perhaps with hindsight they regret. I cannot think of any political leader in the last hundred years that hasn’t made that mistake. In the midst of our frustrations we all need everybody to listen carefully, to understand patiently, and to confront gently if it needs doing, we also to bear with people and not to be too judgemental. In this way we will hold our families together, hold our relationships together, and hold our community together. I hope and pray that you will all have the space to overcome your frustrations and above all build a strong relationship with Our Father God who loves and cares for us all.

Hope on the Horizon The picture below was painted by a local artist and represents the storm surrounding us all as COVID-19 ravaged our normal way of life – getting the basics of food was challenging as shelves emptied in supermarkets, work became uncertain as opportunities dried up, and order books collapsed forcing companies to review staffing levels. Even now you may be facing real challenges of making ends meet and paying bills if you were made redundant as a result of your company closing down or drastically restructuring. In addition to physical needs, wellbeing surfaced as we all faced issues of fear and uncertainty over what the future might hold and our very purpose and identity was challenged as the certainties of work, income and position in life were stripped away. We all endured long periods of lockdown and loneliness and some are still facing these issues as they continue to shield because of underlying health issues. Some faced (and are continuing to face) the worst kind of torment as they have lost loved ones and were unable to say goodbye or have a funeral in the way they would have planned to. At Southgate Church we closed our physical doors and moved on-line using Zoom to keep meeting together and encouraging one another by phone calls and shopping for those shielding in the community as we became aware of needs. We continue to pray for God to deliver us from the grip of this pandemic and extend his grace, mercy, and peace to everyone. So, you might legitimately ask where is God in all this mayhem? We think the picture provides an answer – right in the middle of it with us. The Cross is the only discernible object, symbolising God’s steadfast love for us, amid the storm. We have seen this love demonstrated by the NHS staff’s selfless care for others, the way our neighbours have helped out, when the supermarkets kept going and home deliveries kept coming, when volunteers stepped up to deliver food to the shielding: God delivering ‘our daily bread’, meeting our needs through extraordinary people. As we negotiate the bumpy waters of coming out of lockdown the Cross also reminds me that we all need to reassess where our certainties lie – not in jobs, money, socialising or even the certainty of another day – all of these for many were wiped away in a flash by the virus. But we need a new hope that is steadfast and certain – a certainty based upon the promises of Jesus.
