Hello and welcome to our July issue. Well, after a week in the sun, I am feeling refreshed and ready for the summer! I was lucky enough to miss the heavy downpour of rain we had here in the UK for that whole week, but sadly came back to a backlog of gardening as the grass has grown nearly as tall as me! Ok, I may not be 6ft but it is still very, very long!! We had a lot of entrants for last months crossword competition, with a prize of Tea for Two at Ravenwood Hotel, so we thought, let’s do another one! This months prize is another Tea for Two, but this time at the lovely Glasswells Coffee Shop! So grab your pen and turn to page 46. PARKING
It’s been one of those months, parking problems all over the place. Sadly, in most cases the problem has been on land that the council has no power over, the council can only take action where the problem takes place on the highways controlled by the County Council. There are so many roads that have not yet been adopted by the Council and therefore are the responsibility of the developers. Some of these roads have been there for over ten years and are still waiting to be adopted, which means these roads and grass areas will not be maintained by the council. I have requested a map showing these areas, when I get it I will publish it. There is a problem with parking on the estate, especially where there is no path, people seem to park wherever they like without giving a thought for others, sadly, as this is on private land the council have no jurisdiction and cannot intervene, however, that said, where these vehicles cause an obstruction for fire and ambulances, the police can take action. It would be much better if people were a little more caring.
YOUTH CLUB
The club is in good shape and we now have a new helper, she is Mrs Giadian Vasnic, Giadian is a social worker and is very keen to get involved, so we now have Vickie, Erica and Giadina, all we need now is one or two dads, that will bring new blood, new ideas, if you have a couple of hours free once a month please join us. We would love to have you with us.

VANDALS
We have had a spell of about two years without much vandalism but sadly there has been some in May/June, bottles smashed on paths on the football fields, the play areas, the youth club and other places. The worst thing is that these are areas where children walk to school, walkers take their dogs, the elderly go to doctors. It could result in children being taken to hospital or dogs taken to the vets inflicting heavy vet bills. There has also been some idiots breaking utility signs by kicking them down, breaking young saplings, ripping out plants form gardens and planters, there is no need for this and if these idiots realise the costs of replacing the property then perhaps they might stop.
DOG FOULING
I have had so many complaints regarding dog fouling, it’s almost an everyday occurrence. There is not a lot that can be done about it unless the persons who are not clearing up after their dog or in some cases dogs can be named, then they can be fined up to £1,000. There is a lady who walks on Ten Acre with three dogs all off leads running in all directions, she could never know when or if her dogs have fouled. I have heard about another lady who takes her dog out and lets it foul on a piece of grass near the homes and never clears up, if anyone knows who she is, please let me know and I will report her, as dog owners we have a responsibility to clear up after our dogs, don’t rely on others to do it for you. “There is no such thing as the poo fairy”!

Kicked into the Long Grass
You will have noticed many grass areas which have not been cut recently. It has been very disappointing that the officers have not given me a satisfactory explanation as to why, but we know there is a backlog and that “the team has been a bit delayed”. Each bit of land has a regular schedule for cutting in the summer months, for example Layhill Covert is every three weeks. I managed to get this area and Ten Acre Field done quite quickly after reports, however some others, such as Heldhaw Rd await work at time of writing. we are exploring the possibility of planting wildflower verges which are lower maintenance and I’d love to hear your opinions on the number/email below. Is it a great eco idea or will it look messy?

An advance reminder that the My WiSH charity has brought back the fabulous Soap Box Challenge for a second year. This was a great charity event seeing some local thrill seekers career down Mount Rd in homemade go carts. I bumped into one of this year’s competitors at one of my customers this month who will be representing the Police Cadets and you can see pictured their cart build in progress. Please support our local hospital charity on 31st August- I’ll be attending and I’ll see you there!
A Step in the Right Direction You will have seen that the Town Council funded PPS work to the pavement on Symonds Rd at Pond Covert has been completed. Thanks to all who have responded to my article last month. We have applications in for Barton Rd, more Symonds Rd, Kembold Close, Oswyn Close and Heldhaw Rd. Welcome everyone Our County, District and Town Councillors are now settling in, and will be pleased to hear any concerns or answer any questions you may have. If you have difficulty contacting them, please let us know. We are aware that there have been some teething problems with email addresses. Association of Associations Meeting Robert and I attended the last meeting of the Association of Associations, where representatives of residents associations in Bury meet to discuss common topics. One topic was air quality with a presentation from Cllr Diane Hind. A Town wide Forum is being arranged to discuss this further, and one possible result may be, a vehicle anti-idling policy. We will continue to participate in these meetings to ensure your views are shared across the Town. Community Centre Meetings attended by the Residents Association are being held to deal
with the refurbishment and possible enlargement of the premises. Discussions are also taking place regarding the increase in available parking and parking control. Finally fears of break-ins have prompted an increase in home security systems such as Hive. The range of these systems can be such that your system could also capture your neighbour’s activities and as such be an invasion of their privacy. The onus is on the owner of the system to ensure this doesn’t occur so please try to ensure CCTV coverage is of your property only. W hat’s been happening at...
ABBOTS GREEN Academy The holidays arrived early for the Year 6 pupils at Abbots Green this month. With a 5am start, the energy and enthusiasm could be heard from streets around as the children started their adventure to Torquay. As part of the week children were able to take part in some exciting activities such as swimming, mountain biking, Jacobs Ladder and of course a disco or two along the way! Not only were the activities exciting for the children but they also required a huge amount of bravery and resilience. The week was broken up with excursions to Torquay zoo and The Eden Project giving the children a chance to have some hands on learning experiences. The steamy glasses in the Arizona zone will remain a memory forever! As the children got off the coach on Friday evening, the buzz had certainly continued. ‘That was the best week of my life’ and ‘I have never screamed and laughed so much in a week’ to summarise the truly memorable time that was had by all. As a member of the Abbots Green community we are proud to offer our pupils opportunities that enhance their curriculum and enable them to develop as individuals along the way. Sitting in the woods
N
ow that we’ve got the rain and cold out of the way, we can move on and look forward to summer! This is the best time of the year to get out and make the most of nature; flowers are in full bloom, trees should be greener than ever, and the amount of wildlife around is unbelievable! So, in order to take and enjoy this opportunity as much as possible, you’re going to need a few things, that us at Woodland Ways can provide. First on the list is benches in the woods. Seats in the outdoors are sometimes taken for granted, but they do a lot to help visitors to the wood, especially the elderly and less able. They provide the opportunity to just sit, relax, and enjoy the beauty of nature. They can also encourage people to get outside more, if they know there is somewhere they can rest for a while. Benches don’t have to ruin natural views either, in fact they do quite the opposite! They
blend in with the natural environment, therefore not disturbing anything attenders to the woods would want to see. Unfortunately, there are a few downsides to having benches. They are quite costly, and not everyone appreciates them being there. Vandalism is on the rise, and if the benches are subject to someone’s graffiti, they can destroy the natural look we’re going for. So what do you think? Should Woodland Ways invest in some benches in some of our beautiful woodland areas? Which of the woods needs a bench most? And should it be a standard park bench, a simple log such as the one already at Natterer’s Wood, or something more special? A carved log with embedded artwork might be lovely but who pays for the extra cost? Please do let us know. Enjoy the summer everyone! by Aimee Hartley

Dear reader,
Although the sun didn’t exactly shine for us in June, the Pavilion at Ravenwood Hall certainly shone with our wonderful fundraisers at our annual thank you event. Each year we host this evening event to thank some of the amazing people who have supported us over the year. All our fundraisers are incredible and we WiSH we could invite everyone, but there is just not a venue big enough! Usually held in February we decided we would take on the theme of an afternoon tea and host it in the summer. Still, thanks the generosity of Craig Jarvis at Ravenwood Hall a fantastic time was had by all as we enjoyed music from Joey and Ben, two talented students from County Upper School. The saxophonist and pianist played a medley of classics to welcome our guests. Ravenwood Hall put on a delicious cream tea, with a selection of finger sandwiches, scones with lashings of clotted cream and jam, brownies, cakes, mini lemon meringue pies and of course, not forgetting, tea and coffee. Once everyone was full to the brim our guests enjoyed a brief talk from Sue, Steve Dunn and Craig, before watching a video of their incredible achievements and some thank you’s from our staff. The video is on our Facebook page @MyWiSHCharity, so do take a look, who knows, if you have fundraised for us you may well feature in it! Over the past eighteen months people have held cake sales, run marathons,

cycled up mountains and walked down hills. They have chosen My WiSH as their charity of the year. They have generously donated £500,000 to open the cardiac diagnostic unit. They’ve open their gardens, swum in open waters, line danced and held gaming marathons. They’ve joined in our events including the World War 1 Trail and the Soapbox Challenge. The list is endless and sometimes incredibly creative! Our fundraisers work tirelessly to enhance the care we give to our patients. They all volunteer their time, train endlessly and work incredibly hard to raise funds. Some do it to say thank you for the care given to a loved one who has sadly passed away, some to say thank you for the care given to friend or family member and some to celebrate the end of their journey and recovery. All share a mutual passion, West Suffolk Hospital. When our donors start supporting us they become part of our family and many have now become lifelong friends. It is a privilege to know them and we are so thrilled we had this opportunity to thank them in such a special way. All that is left to say is a massive, massive thank you to everyone who has supported us over the years, we are incredible grateful to you all! LSS PROUDLY PRESENTED... Lymphoedema Support Suffolk, joined by Sally Daniels and Sue Smith from My WiSH Charity along with Cris Barlow of Bury Rotary, presented the West Suffolk Lymphoedema Service with a Lymph Scanner at LSS’s 3rd June meeting. LSS had raised a £1,000 towards the purchase of the Lymph Scanner with My WiSH, Bury Rotary and Freemasons Lodge of Steadfast Unity also making donations.
LSS gives its congratulations to WSLS for winning the 2019 West Suffolk Hospital Foundation Trust’s Shining Light Award for Clinical Team of the Year. WSLS also won the Chair’s Award for Excellence in that category. LSS Meeting Diary Dates: August 5th, October 7th and December 2nd 7pm – 9pm at at Moreton Hall Community Centre. Welcome back to the 19th hole, this month with the change in the world schedule we have another major championship…. THE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP!!
June saw us crown a first time major winner in Gary Woodland at the US Open hosted at the amazing Pebble Beach Golf Links. This month The Open Championship is hosted for the first time at Royal Portrush GC in Northern Ireland. This golf course looks like it will be an incredible test of golf for the worlds best players, and if the weather plays it part in this championship then it will be a tough week for the players. My Major Pick: I think Rory will come good and win another Open Championship. Drill 1) Strike, strike is king in every shot we hit in golf. So this simple GATE drill makes you return the club to the ball as you addressed it and works to achieve better strikes.
Start with the gate wider and slowly bring it in so the tees are close to the toe and heel of the putter. Simply miss the tees and strike it pure! This drill is used daily by TIGER WOODS, so it’s safe to say its worth a try! Drill 2) Start line, after reading your putt its now key to start it down the correct line. Again using a GATE that’s now placed a few feet down your chosen line, your aim is to roll your putts through this gate and down your target line. To make this drill harder simply make the gate smaller and test your putting skill more. Drill 3) Speed Control, is a last key ingredient to holing putts. This simple drill allows you to dial in the speed of the surfaces you are playing on that day before you start your round. We have completed these over 10ft, 20ft and 30ft. However, this drill can be performed over any distances, you are simply trying to gain the speed to these three distances so that you have some swing length parameters to work within on the course. Positively Crafty A hexagon card was achieved in the June session. Coloured shapes using glue with teardrops to finish off .Fiddly but fun and very effective. We even had time to finish off the last layer of coating on the bottles which
have been ongoing for a while as each layer administered takes time to dry. In July we will be working with vellum and making flowers. The sessions are light hearted with a lot of banter. There may not be many of us but we certainly enjoy ourselves and always go home with a sense of achievement even if we do work at different levels to each other. It is all about joining in, helping each other and having a laugh. Just being with people in a socially engaging atmosphere can make a huge difference to someone’s day. Crafting has helped some of our members in their day to day by giving them a change of focus, become totally absorbed in a task, use their hands, calm their minds, take their attention away from their pain. Sessions are held on the first Thursday of each month from 1pm to 4pm. Refreshments included.
Finding something that gives positive effects even if they are only little things like interacting can stabilise your mental health. When you are in pain, feeling comfortable in your own body can be challenging and pushing yourself to do simple things is a constant struggle. Be a friend to yourself, you owe it to yourself. Take the pressure off yourself and provide a more achievable outlook. Treasure the giving of letting the negativity and the hurt go. Afford yourself the same courtesy you would give a friend. Do for yourself what you would want a friend to do for their own self-care which includes rest, recuperation and healing. Action plans and problem solving are part of selfmanagement so if you are an over achiever give them some thought, more importantly if you are finding your day to day incredibly hard they may be useful tools. pain - this creates more “slack” in the muscle thus decreasing the pressure on the affected tendon. l Non-steriodal anti-inflammatories – help decrease the feeling of pain. l Extracorporeal Shock-wave therapy – this can help chronic suffers by stimulating blood flow to the area amongst other things. l Massage to release the tension in the forearm muscles. Long term cure: l Adjustment of technique - ask your coach for advice on the equipment you are using, tips of how to hold the tool or racquet better to reduce the amount of force you take through the forearm. Perhaps you may need newer strings or a better hold of the club? Adjusting the how you hold a tool may help ease discomfort significantly. l See a manual therapist such as a sports therapist or osteopath. Exercises that strengthen the forearms and stretches that lengthen it will help build up the muscle again, so it won’t protest under those aggravating movements. l If manual therapy doesn’t work then your GP may be able to refer you for a steroidal injection or x-ray if symptoms do not subside after conservative treatment. Exercises The idea behind exercises is to decrease the demand on the muscles and allow them to build up resilience again from easy to more dynamic movements. This allows the tissue to heal in response to the appropriate amount of stress whilst teaching you and the muscles involved how to move better again.
How long does it take? On average you should feel symptoms ease within the first few weeks of starting manual therapy. To get to full strength and reduce the re-occurrence of symptoms significantly can take around 12-18months. This is dependent on how much you can modify your activity, compliance to carry out athome exercises and ability to heal/adapt. It important to note, the recovery does take time but bear in mind that a repetitive use injury has normally built up to the symptom of pain for some time - so it will take time to un-do months or years of incorrect technique and re-learn new ways to perform tasks. This is normal for healing in any injury. Even for those that end up having surgery, the exercises act as pre-habilitation and put you in better stance for a full and successful recovery post operation. Dark Circles Under Your Eyes? Here are 5 Tips to help improve them... 1. Cover Delicately! Heavy concealers and foundations will overwhelm delicate eye skin, and while they might lighten the appearance of dark circles, they’ll also emphasise whatever texture is there, whether that’s fine lines, deeper wrinkles, or dry skin.
2. Check Your Stress Levels. Lack of sleep causing dark circles isn’t just an old wives’ tale. It’s scientifically proven! So make sure you’re getting enough sleep for your body to feel relaxed and rested.
3. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate. The skin under your eyes is some of the thinnest on your body—and when you don’t drink enough water, it becomes even thinner. Make sure you drink ten to twelve glasses of water minimum per day and even more if you drink coffee or alcohol!
4. Make Sure It’s Nothing ‘Medical’! Sudden dark circles or those present for a while that aren’t usual for you, may be a sign of something going on inside your body. So, if you’re worried, pop yourself over to your GP!

After the business of our AGM in May, our guest speakers Sue and Sally joined us in singing Jerusalem. Sue Smith is the Head of Fundraising and Sally Daniels is the Appeals Manager the WiSH Charity which provides fundraising for West Suffolk Hospital and Newmarket Hospital and the community services they provide, also the MacMillan Unit. In their first year the two ladies raised £1.2 million and were instrumental in setting up the ‘Memory Corridor’ at the West Suffolk Hospital particularly for dementia patients. There are now two further part time staff. Sue explained how donations are spent and gave us a slide presentation of the many various items that have been purchased which are over and above the essential equipment provided by the NHS. This year it is hoped to raise £2 – 4,000 in order to create a ‘Butterfly Garden’ for end of life patients to spend time with their families and pets. The Charity achieved ‘Outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission. http://mywishcharity. wsh.nhs.uk/Charity/Home.aspx The Bury St Edmunds Rickshaw came to visit us in June and although it was pouring with rain outside, many of our ladies took a ride around the hall. Libby Ranzetta and Sam Reid share the administration as well as riding the rickshaw. They explained that our President Ann Williamson was also instrumental in obtaining the necessary funding from various Locality Budgets and the rickshaw launched in June 2018. There are 32 volunteers who cycle and other volunteers they call ‘Chatty Chums’ who are happy to accompany someone who may not have anyone to go with them. DBS checks are carried out on all volunteers and it is very safe and easy to access for disabled users. INFUSIONS GROUP CREATE NEW TEEN AT BURY ST EDMUNDS’ WOMEN’S REFUGE
ROOM
On Friday 7th June, Jo Churchill MP will unveil the brand-new teenage room at Bury St Edmunds’ Women’s Aid Outreach Centre. The room is designed specifically to offer a safe and welcoming space for teenagers affected by domestic violence and was funded, decorated and furnished by local company Infusions Group, the company behind the ICE Café on the Rougham Industrial Estate. Bury St. Edmunds Women’s Aid was set up in 1974 to provide safety and support to women and children experiencing domestic abuse. The main refuge in Bury St Edmunds has 23 bed spaces offering temporary accommodation in a safe environment for women and their children recovering from the traumatic effects of domestic violence, but Bury St Edmunds Women’s Aid also offers a range of community services and counselling to support families rebuilding their lives after abuse and these are based at their outreach centre in the town centre, where this new teenage room has been created. The staff at Infusions Group chose Bury St Edmunds Women’s Aid as their charity of the year for 2018, and they raised over £2400 during the course of the year, by donating tips from their ICE Lunch Bar, through raffles and staff charity quizzes and through a half marathon run by one of the company’s owners. During the course of the year, the company also donated Easter eggs, cooked Christmas lunch for staff and the ladies and children staying at the Refuge at that time, donated and hosted a team building day and arranged a Halloween party for children affected by domestic violence. On Friday, they will also hand over a cheque for the balance of the fundraising which will be used to buy more equipment for the room. In December of 2018, the four directors of Infusions Group visited the Outreach Centre, decorated the room and built flatpack furniture, 38 | JULY 2019

kitting out the room for young people to use. The new room includes an area for make-up and nails, a craft area, bean bags and Wi-Fi as well as a chalk wall. It is designed to be as accommodating as possible for teenagers in a supportive, safe and caring environment, away from younger siblings. Heather Hunt, CEO of Bury St Edmunds Women’s Aid said: “We’re so grateful for this donation. It’s made such a difference so far and will only prove to be even more beneficial as time goes on for this particularly vulnerable group, giving them a bit of space and freedom whilst at the same time keeping them safe.” John Jackaman, Managing Director of Infusions Group, says: “We loved working with the team at Bury St Edmunds Women’s Aid and were pleased to do our part. Super Healthy Pizza The quantities for this are generous, so if you have any leftovers, pop a wedge of cold pizza into your lunchbox the next day
Ingredients:
100g each strong white and strong wholewheat flour 1 tsp or 7g sachet easy-blend dried yeast 125ml warm water For the topping 200g can chopped tomato, juice drained handful cherry tomatoes, halved 1 large courgette, thinly sliced using a peeler 25g mozzarella, torn into pieces 1 tsp capers in brine, drained 8 green or red olives, roughly chopped 1 garlic clove, finely chopped 1 tbsp olive oil 2 tbsp chopped parsley, to serve

Method:
Mix the flours and yeast with a pinch of salt in a food processor fitted with a dough blade. Pour in the water and mix to a soft dough, then work for 1 min. Remove the dough and roll out on a lightly floured surface to a round about 30cm across. Lift onto an oiled baking sheet. Spread the canned tomatoes over the dough to within 2cm of the edges. Arrange the cherry tomatoes and courgettes over the top, then scatter with the mozzarella. Mix the capers, olives and garlic, then scatter over the top. Drizzle evenly with the oil. Leave to rise for 20 mins. Heat oven to 240C/ fan 220C/gas 9 or the highest setting. Bake the pizza for 10-12 mins until crisp and golden around the edges. Scatter with the parsley to serve.

Gnocchi With Spinach and Pepper Sauce
Our shortcut version of Spain’s beloved romesco sauce boasts all the smoky flavor of the original with a fraction of the prep time. Gluten Free? Replace with cauliflower gnocchi!
Ingredients:
16-oz whole-wheat potato gnocchi 1 5-oz baby spinach 1 1/2 ounces Manchego cheese, grated (about 6 Tbsp.) and divided 3 tablespoons olive oil, divided 1/2 cup jarred roasted red peppers, chopped 1/4 cup smoked almonds 1 plum tomato, chopped 1 baguette slice, torn (about 1/2 oz.) 2 tablespoons sherry vinegar 1 garlic clove 1/2 teaspoon paprika 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper
Method:
Cook gnocchi according to package directions, omitting salt and fat. Drain gnocchi; return to pan. Add spinach, 1/4 cup cheese, and 1 tablespoon olive oil; cover and let stand until spinach wilts, 2 to 3 minutes. Gently toss to combine. Pulse red peppers, almonds, tomato, baguette, vinegar, garlic, paprika, crushed red pepper, and remaining 2 tablespoons olive oil in a food processor until smooth, about 1 minute. Divide gnocchi mixture among 5 bowls. Top evenly with sauce and remaining 2 tablespoons cheese.

TRAVELLING TO EUROPE Currently, British citizens can travel visa free with no limit on the amount of time spent in an EU country. This position will continue until the United Kingdom (UK) leaves the European Union (EU). Should we be faced with a no deal Brexit, then British citizens will need to comply with all of the laws of each EU country in respect of its entry and residence regulations. It is likely that in the event of a no deal, British citizens travelling to an EU country will need an existing passport which has been issued within the last 10 years and the passport itself must be valid for a minimum of 6 months beyond the date of arrival into the EU. Furthermore, the passport must be valid for at least 3 months from the date of departure from the EU.

Healing the Natural Way Natural healing has been practiced around the world for thousands of years. Over time many disciplines have developed linked by the common belief that everything is energy. Locally and Internationally we have been witnessing many great tributes and events to remember the life changing relationships involved here in the UK 75 years ago. The commemoration of D-Day in 1944 has highlighted our relationship with our friends and allies both in Europe and in America (and in other countries of the world). The hostilities of the second world war were not felt just overseas but also here locally in Bury St Edmunds. I hope that I can speak for all our members, volunteers and the local community with links to that period, WE WILL NEVER FORGET. We are extremely proud at the Museum to be a group who respect and remember how RAF Bury St Edmunds (Rougham) played a major part in the conflict. This is the reason we volunteer, WE WILL REMEMBER THEM. Our Memorial and all the artifacts reflect the commitment and sacrifice given by so many, for our freedom. As with many museums in the region, we give our time and energy freely to provide a continuing memorial. Continuing to be updated, continuing to be 50 | JULY 2019

New leadership team at Sybil Andrews Academy outline improvement plan Sybil Andrews Academy has vowed to make “rapid improvements” following a recent Ofsted inspection.

Local Quiz Night Raises Over

Regarded as one of the region’s biggest quiz events, a local family run hearing care company held their bi-annual quiz night which managed to raise an incredible amount for a UK deafness charity. The Hearing Care Centre hosted their seventeenth quiz fundraiser in Kesgrave on Sunday 9th June 2019. Presented by BBC radio presenter Stephanie Mackentyre, the evening was supported by 200 guests who enjoyed 9 rounds of tough trivia, with five teams taking home cash prizes. Tickets for the quiz sold out in less than a week, which further demonstrated the event’s popularity. Thanks to generous support from local businesses, ticket sales and a bumper raffle, £1,624.37 was raised on the night. This was then boosted with an extra £1,000 as a fundmatch from the team at Barclays in Ipswich, taking the total to £2,624.37. This event was all in aid of Hearing Dogs For Deaf People, a charity close to the hearts of The Hearing Care Centre. Karen Finch, Managing Director and founder of The Hearing Care Centre, expressed: “Hearing Dogs give many deaf people confidence, independence and companionship. I want to give a huge thank you to everyone who helped us support this great charity”. a white paper plate, orange tissue/crepe paper, a black pen, a piece of orange card and a stapler n Draw a faint pencil line down the centre of the plate n Fold in the two sides of the plate to meet the lines and staple in place. n Either draw a pair of eyes or stick some googly eyes in position and add eye lashed for details. n Draw a black triangle for a nose or use black paper and glue n Cut out some triangles from orange card and staple for ears n Fill in the face of the fox by scrunching up small squares of tissue or crepe paper and glue in place.

Community unearth medieval finds at Abbey dig A community archaeological dig in part of the former Abbey of St Edmund has unearthed a medieval ring and pottery. The dig which took place over two days, saw 32 members of the public aid an archaeological excavation of the former Eastgate Nurseries across the River Lark from the Abbey Gardens in Bury St Edmunds. The site will accommodate new tennis courts, picnic area, the town’s fire beacon and link paths providing easier routes between Ram Meadow and No Mans Meadow. It is the first community archaeology to take place at the site since the formation of the Abbey of St Edmund Heritage Partnership in 2016, a partnership that is led by St Edmundsbury Cathedral and West Suffolk Council in collaboration with nearly 20 other local and regional public, private and voluntary organisations. Archaeological investigations showed that the river terrace was extensively quarried, from around the 12th century for the sand and gravels that were probably used in the construction of the stone buildings in the Abbey. The dig also found animal bones and traces of clay lined pits as evidence of a tannery that was on the site close to the Abbots Bridge. The Rev Canon Matthew Vernon, Chair of the Heritage Partnership said: “The Abbey of St Edmund Heritage Partnership is keen, whenever it can, to invite local residents and visitors to get 60 | JULY 2019
involved in this work to help develop a better understanding of the significance of the Abbey of St Edmund area. “We are already looking at how best to engage the local and wider community in some of the archaeological investigations that could take place within the area over the next few years. “On this occasion, there was an opportunity for a limited number of people to take part in a supervised community archaeological dig. This was on the site of what will become the new tennis courts and a new picnic area at the former Eastgate Nurseries adjoining the Abbey Gardens. We look forward to sharing the findings of these archaeological investigations more fully in due course.” Cllr Joanna Rayner, West Suffolk Council, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture said: “What is great, is the sense of renewed interest not just in St Edmund but also the Abbey of St Edmund, of which the Abbey Gardens is just a part. The archaeological investigations could add more to our understanding of this wonderful heritage area which has great national and international significance. We look forward to engaging people in its story in new and exciting ways when, as a community, we share celebrating 1000 years of the Abbey in 2020.” The Heritage Partnership, relies on the time and effort of volunteers, and we are looking for more people to offer their skills and expertise. What to do in your garden in July.. Summer is here and there are as ever plenty of jobs to do in the garden. However there are also plenty of gardens to visit. If you are looking for some inspiration or to buy a few plants then a visit to Place for Plants at East Bergholt to visit their 20 acre garden makes a good outing. Moat Farm Garden at Stowmarket is open on July 7th from 11am as part of the National Garden Scheme. The moat here is home to rare water voles

Change Ahead for Companies House Companies House is the United Kingdom’s Register of limited companies. Created in 1844 it now faces massive change as the government steps up its fight against economic crime. As Chris Ridgeon writes, the government is consulting on proposals to significantly change the role of Companies House and has launched a consultation process around steps to increase the transparency of UK corporate entities. The potential reforms outlined in the consultation document amount to the biggest changes to the UK system for setting up and operating companies since the Register was created in 175 years ago. Kelly Tolhurst, Minister for Small Business, Consumers and Corporate Responsibility, says in her introduction to the paper that the UK is recognised as a global leader on corporate transparency. That’s just one of the reasons why it is an attractive location to set up and operate a business. She adds that regrettably the same factors that make this system successful make it attractive to exploitation. Recent years have seen concerns grow about the misuse of UK corporate entities, the filing of false information at Companies House, and the use of innocent people’s information on the companies register to commit fraud and other acts of harm. The consultation is open until August 5 this year and is targeting three principle areas: • Information that companies are required to disclose • Increasing the checks on the information disclosed • Improving the exchange of intelligence between Companies House and UK Law Enforcement bodies The government wants the views of those affected by the reform, set out in five parts: 1. Knowing who is setting up, managing and controlling companies 2. Improving the accuracy and ease of use of data on the Register 3. Protecting personal information on the Register 4. Ensuring compliance, sharing intelligence and other measures to deter abuse of corporate entities 5. onths of anticipation. Weeks of planning. Days of packing. The excitement is at fever pitch… and that’s just the parents! Yes, the long awaited school residential trip is upon us at last. Back in the day, the only school outing we got at primary school was a daytrip to Easton Farm Park or Framlingham Castle. Which to be fair, were both wildly exciting. However, nowadays it seems expectations are higher and the last few weeks of primary school must consist of at least one residential adventure. There’s a couple of things about this that stand out to me. Firstly, the teachers. Wow, I mean, just wow! Taking 60 over excited 11 year olds away is a noble and selfless undertaking worthy of some sort of medal. I used to coach half a dozen of them at football training once 68 | JULY 2019

a week, and I needed some ibuprofen and lie down after just an hour. Secondly, the children. How exciting must this be for them? For many the first time away from home, with friends, and nonstop outdoor activities. It’s almost like a dream. If there were any nerves, my son didn’t show them. I think the eagerness to try raft building, kayaking, abseiling etc.. far outweighed any trepidation of being away from home. Packing started in earnest a couple of weeks ago. At least the lists did. Ensuring favourite clothes were washed and ready, sourcing every item of the essential kit list provided. The end result was a suitcase the size of the child. Still, we were confident it contained all required, plus plenty of spares.
On the morning of departure, my son confidently dragged his 40kg, child sized suitcase to school. His little sisters insisted on big hugs and even snuck in a couple of kisses, which to his credit he tolerated, then he was off. A pat on the back and a final reminder to ‘be good’, was all he got (or wanted) from me. As I left the school gates, I noted a tearful parent. Initially I wondered what on earth was wrong. Had they just received some bad news? Perhaps they had stubbed their toe on the kerb? Then suddenly I understood. This is the emotional goodbye. I was pretty emotional too as it happened. As I walked home with enthusiastic children’s laughter in the air, I couldn’t help but chuckle myself, with a grin like a Cheshire cat. Yeah, I’ll miss the lad for sure, but I think I’ll cope.

CRICKET CLUB
Bury St Edmunds Cricket Club are well into the 2019 season and are in a healthy position fielding 4 teams on Saturday’s as well as two in the Hunts Bats Sunday League. In addition fixtures are being fulfilled at under 9, 11, 13 and 15 age groups. The first team play in the East Anglian Premier League and at this moment are placed 4th in what is one of the highest standards of cricket outside the first class game. The team have been strengthened by the acquisition of Daniel Moriarty and Justin Broad who joined the club during the winter, there have already been a number of outstanding performances with a century not out by Ben Seabrook on the opening day of the season, the outstanding bowling has come from Sean Cooper who played for England Over 50’s against Australia last winter he has taken 3 wickets in an innings twice but his 5.24 against Vauxhall Mallards was superb.
The club provides cricket for all ages and abilities and the home matches are played at the Victory Sports Ground which has the finest facilities for cricket in the region.
Bury’s 2nd XI are at the moment second in Division 3 of the Two Counties League and are aiming for promotion.

URGENT APPEAL FOR VOLUNTEERS
TO HELP ISOLATED OLDER PEOPLE
A charity is urgently appealing for volunteers to help lonely older people in the Bury St Edmunds area.
Contact the Elderly, a UK charity dedicated to tackling loneliness and social isolation among older people, provides Sunday afternoon gatherings for people aged 75 and older. The charity has been providing its services in Bury St Edmunds for just over six months and already has a very popular group the area, welcoming 6 guests every month. Through the group strong bonds have been formed and friendships made – and 95% of the older guests that the charity helps say they now have something to look forward to. John Adams, 94, a regular guest at the tea party said “It’s so lovely to come to these parties because you get homemade cakes. Sunday’s are so lonely but now I have a tea party to look forward to.” The charity is committed to helping lonely older people in the area and due to the success of the first group, now has older people on the waiting list in the area. The charity currently has space for a few more guests to join the new group and is keen to raise awareness of these openings among the local community. It is also appealing for volunteers who can spare just a few hours each month to help with the running of local tea parties – and enjoy a cuppa themselves. Each guest is collected from their home by a volunteer driver and taken to a volunteer host’s home, where they meet with a small group for tea, chat and friendship. The group is welcomed by a different host each month but the drivers remain the same which means that over the months and years, acquaintances turn into friends and loneliness is replaced by companionship. Contact the Elderly’s Development Officer, Alex Berwick said: “Sundays can be particularly lonely 80 | JULY 2019
for older people who live alone and our tea parties give them a chance to get together with others, make new friends, eat delicious cakes and enjoy a cup of tea. Our monthly events make a real difference to the lives of those in the group and we would encourage anyone interested in coming along, or those who know of people it might appeal to, to get in touch.”
Alex Berwick added: “We also have a real shortage of local volunteers in the area – it’s not a big commitment, and our volunteers genuinely get as much out of the experience as our older guests, so I’m calling for anyone who is interested in giving something back to their community to get in touch.” Contact the Elderly has been dedicated to tackling loneliness and social isolation among older people for more than 50 years and is supported by 11,000 volunteers. Last year it helped 6,223 older guests in 813 groups across the UK. Christ Church MORETON HALL We live in an age when people think they can find fulfilment by just looking inwardly. The truth is we only truly discover ourselves when we come into a right relationship with nature and with those around us. It is God’s world and if we look after it and if we care for everyone and everything in it, it is by that path we discover who we really are and find the peace and fulfilment all we need. It is my prayer for us all that in these times of worry and concern we keep looking outward, caring, supporting and loving one another and saying our prayers to God, and then we will find His peace and contentment here are three stories that illustrate my point
Food Banks As we approach the school holidays many of us are thinking about the joy of having our children with us. The holidays; where we go as family or with friends, to enjoy ourselves and relax, or perhaps, we are looking forward to enjoying a summer of sport and the Garden. Sadly for many homes across Bury St. Edmunds the children being at home for six weeks is something which, while it is not dreaded, does fill many families with real concern. Money begins to run out before the end of August and so do food supplies. There is as much call on food banks in the summer holidays as there is at Christmas time. So Christ Church Moreton Hall will be running another food bank appeal through June and July to enable the local food banks to be fully stocked for the summer holidays. I hope you will be able to support us.

Tragic Incident A few days ago on church grounds we found a female duck that had been killed. On closer inspection the poor animal had two holes in its body, not caused by a gun, or an animal, or a knife. It may have been caused by somebody firing a crossbow bolt. While we are not sure exactly what happened we have informed the police. If somebody is killing our wildlife with such a weapon they should be know the church grounds are covered by Council CCTV. They may have been recorded. It is a criminal offence to kill wildlife and if they miss, next time, they may hit something or someone else. I hope we are wrong but be assured we will keep a vigilant eye over all the estates ducks we all enjoy so much.
Christian Aid. Thank you so much for your generosity during the recent Christian Aid campaign. Over ÂŁ1700 was raised locally and will be going to support projects in Sierra Leone. Also thank you for sending in the cards to our local MP and the Cabinet Ministers. I have received many letters back in connection with this. So this summer I prayer for you all that you may find all the peace and all the joy and all the love you need. For I have found all three in knowing loving and following Jesus Christ.
