Ideal to whip out during flights, the hottest parts of the day or in restaurants; these are tried and tested (by us!!) life-savers that kids will love (and a welcome change from eye spy!) Water Bombs

It’s sometimes hard to know where to turn for health advice that doesn’t just offer drugs or surgery as the only two options. Les get the low down on some interesting scientific research into the hidden benefits of certain key complementary therapies. In a previous life I was a rep for a pharmaceutical company and I thought the only option for illness or dis-ease was drugs or surgery, however 20 years on I have learned that the human body has an amazing capacity to heal itself if we just give it the right conditions and show it a bit of love! Recent scientific research has shown the following results (the reason you don’t hear about it when you go to the GP surgery it that the big Pharma companies don’t want you to and they still have a major influence on how and what our GP’s prescribe for us.) and I firmly believe that one day very soon we will be able to see a prescription written for things like yoga, pilates, tai chi and meditation, along with some of the well researched and scientifically proven complementary therapies. The more we all start to demand choice in our healthcare system the healthier we will all become. Zinc can relieve your cold finds Cochrane Review A new review has found that if you take zinc regularly you can reduce your risk of
catching a cold, and if you start taking zinc when the cold catches you, you will beat it quicker. The new meta-analysis - published by the Cochrane Library – includes 15 randomised controlled trials studies totalling over 1300 participants. It was found that zinc supplements significantly reduce both symptoms and severity of illness. Tai Chi the best exercise for Arthritis In a meta-analysis of seven studies, researchers from the George Institute in Sydney, Australia discovered that Tai Chi improves pain and disability better than other exercises and health plans among arthritis sufferers. (Source: Arthritis & Rheumatism, 2009; 61: 717). Yoga better for Back Pain then conventional treatments BWY teachers led a group of 156 patients with chronic lower back pain and taught them 12 weeks of yoga compared with a control group who just had conventional treatments from a GP. Over the years, our diet as a nation has become poorer. Although food is plentiful and readily available, the quality and variety of nutrients it provides has become less than that of a typical diet in the 1950’s. Along with the time saving invention of ready meals and fast food restaurants came additives and preservatives many of which our digestive system was not designed to deal with. The old fashioned diet of meat and two vegetables really was not such a bad thing. We consumed less calories and provided our bodies with the nutrients it requires to function properly without the need for additives to make it last longer, look nicer or taste better. The food was more often than not grown locally and the meat was also produced on local farms. This, combined with a more active lifestyle meant that we were not only slimmer but fitter and most importantly healthier. Today our lives are much busier, we are all trying to deal with the ever increasing demands of longer working hours, busy family lives, financial worries and general time constraints. This unfortunately means that we often neglect the most important thing, our own body. We no longer sit down and eat breakfast as a family, eating a nutritious meal to start our day. Breakfast is really important. Your body has not had food since the previous evening and your blood sugar levels are becoming low. Breakfast should consist of foods that will not cause sudden sugar high. It should consist of foods that will release their energy slowly, thus preventing mood swings, tiredness, and hunger later in the morning.

Most breakfast cereals are high in sugar content and although they contain added vitamins and minerals they are not in their natural state and have been stripped from the food during the manufacturing process, only to be added back in later. The same applies to cereal bars and breakfast bars. Try to make time to eat a proper breakfast. Porridge with some fruit, fresh or frozen fruit and natural yoghurt. A boiled or scrambled egg and a slice of wholemeal toast or even grilled bacon and scrambled egg. Muesli with no added sugar. These are all good breakfasts that get your nutritional day off to a good start.

Exercise is the miracle cure we’ve always had, but for too long we’ve neglected to take our recommended dose. Our health is now suffering as a consequence. This is no snake oil. People who do regular activity have a lower risk of many chronic diseases, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke and some cancers. Research shows that physical activity can also boost selfesteem, mood, sleep quality and energy, as well as reducing your risk of stress, depression, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. “If exercise were a pill, it would be one of the most cost-effective drugs ever invented,” says Dr Nick Cavill, a health promotion consultant.
People are less active nowadays, partly because technology has made our lives easier. We drive cars or take public transport. Machines wash our clothes. We entertain ourselves in front of a TV or computer screen. Fewer people are doing manual work, and most of us have jobs that involve little physical effort. Work, house chores, shopping and other necessary activities are far less demanding than for previous generations. We move around less and burn off less energy than people used to. Research suggests that many adults spend more than seven hours a day sitting down, at work, on transport or in their leisure time. People aged over 65 spend 10 hours or more each day sitting or lying down, making them the most sedentary age group. Sedentary lifestyles

Inactivity is described by the Department of Health as a “silent killer”. Evidence is emerging that sedentary behaviour, such as sitting or lying down for long periods, is bad for your health.
Given the overwhelming evidence, it seems obvious that we should all be physically active. It’s essential if you want to live a healthy and fulfilling life into old age.
Not only should you try to raise your activity levels, but you should also reduce the amount of time you and your family spend sitting down.

Common examples of sedentary behaviour include watching TV, using a computer, using the car for short journeys and sitting down to read, talk or listen to music – and such behaviour is thought to increase your risk of many chronic diseases, such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes, as well as weight gain and obesity.

Moderate-intensity aerobic activity means you’re working hard enough to raise your heart rate and break a sweat. One way to tell if you’re working at a moderate intensity is if you can still talk but you can’t sing the words to a song. Examples of moderate-intensity aerobic activities are: • walking fast • water aerobics • riding a bike on level ground or with few hills • playing doubles tennis • pushing a lawn mower
“Previous generations were active more naturally through work and manual labour, but today we have to find ways of integrating activity into our daily lives,” says Dr Cavill. Whether it’s limiting the time babies spend strapped in their buggies, or encouraging adults to stand up and move frequently, people of all ages need to reduce their sedentary behaviour. “This means that each of us needs to think about increasing the types of activities that suit our lifestyle and can easily be included in our day,” says Dr Cavill. Crucially, you can hit your weekly activity target but still be at risk of ill health if you spend the rest of the time sitting or lying down.

BBQ Pulled Pork Serves: 4 | Total time: Over 60 Minutes | Syns per serving: FREE
Ingredients
1.5-2kg pork shoulder, all fat removed 5 tbsp Worcestershire sauce 1 tsp mustard powder 500g passata 3 tbsp balsamic vinegar 2 cloves of garlic, crushed 3 tbsp sweetener Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Method
In a small bowl, mix passata, Worcestershire sauce, balsamic vinegar, mustard powder, garlic, sweetener and seasoning. Transfer to a small pan and simmer for 15 minutes, or until the sauce thickens. Meanwhile, trim and remove all visible fat from the pork and sear all sides in a hot frying pan sprayed with low calorie cooking spray. Transfer to a roasting tin lined with aluminium foil and pour the sauce over the pork making sure all the meat is covered. Cover with the foil and bake on 160°C/140°C Fan for 4-5 hours. Remove the pork from the oven and place on a cutting board. Allow the meat to cool for approximately 15 minutes, then shred into bite-sized pieces using two forks. Tip: Chef’s tip: Serve with homemade coleslaw, Slimming World-style sweet potato chips in 60g wholemeal rolls.

Honey-Soy Chicken Kebabs Honey, soy sauce and garlic make a terrific marinade and basting sauce for chicken kebabs with your favourite vegetables - try onion, peppers, cherry tomatoes or mushrooms. Barbecue or grill.
Serves: 12 Cook: 30 min
Ingredients 4 tablespoons vegetable oil 5 tablespoons honey 5 tablespoons soy sauce 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 8 skinless, boneless chicken breast fillets - cut into cubes 2 cloves garlic 5 onions, cut into pieces or silverskin onions 2 red peppers, cut into pieces skewers

Method In a large bowl, whisk together oil, honey, soy sauce and pepper. Before adding chicken, reserve a small amount of marinade to brush onto kebabs while cooking. Place the chicken, garlic, onions and peppers in the bowl, and marinate in the refrigerator at least 2 hours (the longer the better). Preheat barbecue for high heat. Drain marinade from the chicken and vegetables, and discard marinade. Thread chicken and vegetables alternately onto the skewers. Lightly oil the cooking grate. Cook kebabs for 12 to 15 minutes, until chicken juices run clear. Turn and brush with reserved marinade frequently.

Sparrowhawks Sparrowhawks were once in trouble in the UK. The use of vast amounts of crude pesticide in the 1960s resulted in birds of prey eggs becoming very thin, and few chicks hatched. Numbers dropped fast. When the issue was identified, pesticide testing, regulation and use improved and continues to improve even today. Sparrowhawk numbers increased, to around 35,000 pairs across the UK. Sparrowhawks are occasionally seen on Moreton Hall, as a grey streak dashing across your garden, or, if you are lucky, a grey streak ending in a puff of feathers as they catch their prey. They catch and eat birds as big as a woodpigeon, or as small as a wren. Sometimes you will find the partially eaten remains.
However, detailed monitoring of birds shows that sparrowhawks are most common when other birds are more common, i.e. if prey numbers go down, sparrowhawks need to move away or die. And anyway, with 8.5 million cats in the UK, what do you think would affect bird numbers most? That 240 cats for each sparrowhawk. Its easy to help sparrowhawks. Just put out a bird feeder, maybe peanuts or bird seed, and a bird bath. This will help concentrate small birds into your garden and increase the probability that a sparrowhawk will come along. On a good day, you may even see the kill, as dramatic as any of David Attenborough’s films of lions and wildebeeste.

NEW PLAY AREA There is to be a new play area here on Moreton Hall which will cost lot of money. This will be a community facility to be enjoyed by all residents. Sadly I have already had several complaints about the misuse of the area with dog foul lying round and dog bags being put in the wrong bins. There has also been complaints about older youths causing problems. Our Locality officer suggested that I should endeavour to set up a friends of the play area group, who would help to oversee the project. I think this would be an admirable idea and if anyone would like to be part of the group, please contact me and I will set up a meeting. With the advent of a new school and the football scheme, the council are trying to provide social facilities to accommodate the growing needs of our estate. What we need from our locals is respect for these facilities, if anyone sees vandals smashing things up or dog walkers not clearing up after their dogs please let us know or dial 101 and let the police know, will let you know when the area is ready for use.
PARKING People are still not using the Heldhaw Road parking area, the council have erected lighting on this site so it is safer to use. I almost got a parking ticket last week for parking in the wrong place, luckily I had just got out of my car when the warden spotted me, so it proves they are around so be careful.
DRINK AND DRUGS SUMMER HOLIDAYS
In last months issue I alluded to the fact that there had been no drinking parties on the fields. Sadly I have to report that in July there has been a few parties on Layhill field and quite a mess left behind, there were also evidence of drug taking and drug taking equipment plus empty sachets which contained drugs. Vandalism has also reared its ugly head again. A sign taken from the community centre was smashed and taken down Symonds Road before being dumped. The most annoying part is that whoever it was just left the broken sign on the pathway. Once again if you see this kind of behaviour, please ring 101 or email me.

During the summer holidays it is hard to keep children occupied, by way of trying to help families through this period, I will be opening the youth club on Thursdays between 11am and 1.30pm. Families ate invited to come along with their children, where they can use the club facilities such as toilets, kitchen and some of the equipment. You can bring your own food have a picnic, play family rounder’s and other games. There is one stipulation, NO children under eight unaccompanied allowed. They are not babysitting events. Sorry but we don’t have the staff to cover this. Bring your families out and enjoy some of those illusive hot summer days and it’s free.

The headlines have been dominated this week by the Assisted Dying Bill which even if passed by the House of Lords, should be rejected by the House of Commons. This has raised many issues around justice and the care of the elderly. I want to take this opportunity to bring to the debate a very difference aspect. That is the effect on those relatives who have to play a part in assisting a beloved relative to die. My own experience of this, is when the doctors recommended to my mother and me that the ventilator upon which my father depended (he had not regained consciousness for nearly a month) should be turned off. We complied and very quickly he slipped away. There were many good reasons for doing this, including the quality of life he would have had if he had survived. While it was fully supervised by the medical profession, with the complete compliance of the family, nonetheless it was an extremely difficult choice and his passing has left a huge scar on us all. Over fifteen years later I still miss him; he would be 82 now if he had lived. When asked by a relative to consider ending their life, most of us, out of compassion will say “Yes�. But to my mind any relative who agrees will find the emotional cost very high and there may be a scaring to the memory that the years will not heal; this at a time when palliative care through the hospices and home care has never been better. No one need die in pain or without care in Britain today. As for the medical profession who will have to undertake this, consider two points. The first

is that all doctors go into the profession to extend life, not to end it. Being asked to conduct assisted suicides would be an immensely difficult thing for many of them to do and could not be undertaken lightly. What damage are we doing to them by asking for their help? And will there be conscious clause for those who cannot say yes for ethical and religious reasons? Secondly, prognoses are incredibly difficult. Every doctor will tell you stories of people given six months to live who do not last six days and others who have been given six months to live who last six years. The present Bill says that if somebody is going to die anyway what does it matter? Well, in addition to the victim, it will matter to the family; it will matter to the doctors and carers. It will still matter long after the event has taken place. We need to be very careful who is damaged by this. We also know that not all relatives are nice, as the Archbishop of Canterbury says in his excellent article in The Times. (http://www.thetimes. co.uk/tto/opinion/columnists/ article4145621.ece) More poignant and persuasive yet is the words of Bishop Inge whose wife died from cancer at 51 last
year. (http://www.theguardian.com/ commentisfree/2014/jul/17/ my-wife-knew-she-was-dyingbut-chose-life). People can be pressured into doing things because they don’t want to be a burden. Perhaps finally there is this, sometimes it is harder to observe pain than it is to bear it. We all need to be very careful in the decisions that lie ahead with this Bill and the continuing debate in our country. Classic and Sports Cars by the Lake returns for fifth year Plans are under way for the popular family event Classic and Sports Cars by the Lake, which will be held for the fifth successive year this month. The organisers of the event, held at Hall Farm, Fornham St Martin, already have more than 480 car entries and are confident 600 vehicles will be on show on Sunday 31 August, from 11am-4.30pm. The show, which raises funds for St Nicholas Hospice Care, is organised by Andrew and Gina Long, of Hall Farm, along with the Hospice’s voluntary Special Events Committee. Andrew Long said: “Classic and Sports Cars by the Lake has established a loyal following of car and motorcycle exhibitors, who are
the stars of the show. What’s been happening at... Abbots Green Community Primary School “We’re All Going on a Summer Holiday!” has been our whole school project for the Summer Term.... and what better way to consolidate all our learning than a trip to the seaside! On a sunny Monday morning at the end of term 250 children from Abbots Green boarded several buses to embark on a day trip to Felixstowe. The Reception children’s eyes lit up when they realised they had been allocated the double-decker bus for their journey. There were genuine squeals of delight all the way and even cheers as we crossed the Orwell Bridge!
We had a truly wonderful day with the older children visiting Landguard Fort while the younger ones dug gigantic holes on the beach. There were also seaside quizzes, beach art and beach games throughout the day and an ice cream for everybody courtesy of the Friends of Abbots Emily in Sunflower Class said “I enjoyed the Green. beach art the most, we made a mermaid.” We received some lovely comments from Louise in Orchid Class added “I enjoyed Landguard members of the public who watched in Fort, the massive cannon was awesome!” amazement as 250 green jumpers wandered Thomas in Foxglove Class also commented on back and forth on the promenade and the day Landguard Fort, “Everyday the soldiers ate tea passed so quickly. You may have noticed that high on our list of priorities is trying to get the infrastructure to improve in line with the present and future developments on our estate. Skyliner Way is high on the list of problems, a chicane formed by a traffic island and parked cars, navigated in opposing directions by HGVs, busses and the odd brave resident. A lighthearted description yes but a serious problem that is about to get worse. The new school is scheduled to open during September 2016, the Football Facility is still being re planned and will be a full time business operation, add 1750 households by 2031 whose residents will need to pass through, by or around Moreton Hall plus a fully filled Business Park and Skyliner Way may need to be dual carriageway. Maybe an over exaggeration even alarmist because extending the road to Junction 45 will make that unnecessary. So I’m told. Please get in touch and give us your views on the management and future of our estate. Have a little rant I enjoyed mine. The Inspector has made his report on Vision 2031 and first impressions are that it is as expected and we will be discussing it at our next meeting on 21st Aug.

At a recent “Our Place” Meeting, organised on behalf of the Bury St Edmunds County Councillors it was confirmed during a briefing on the reorganisation of schools that the target date for opening the New School is Sept 2016. The County Council Area highways Manager then gave a report on road maintenance and traffic management events. Work commences on the Puffin Crossing adjacent to Sainsbury’s in Bedingfeld Road in August. Should this be known as “Trevor’s Crossing”?. My post World Cup fitness regime is well and truly underway. Cycling to work maintains a base level of fitness, but the food and drink excesses during the last month or two needs more than a pootle across town to burn off. One theory I have is that by spending a few quid on running shoes you will feel obliged to use them regularly. With this in mind I elbowed my way into that horrendous discount sports superstore in town for my ‘usual’ trainers. I have bought a pair every 3 years or so for the last 10. I know them very well, and the best part is I do not even need to try them on. Sadly, they now seem to have been discontinued. This means I have the painful task of finding a suitable replacement. Not something that can sensibly be done with kids in tow (…my son removing every garish football boot off the display saying, ‘How about this one Daddy?’). Finding time to run is another matter. In the days before kids

(remember those?) I would get up early (well, what I naively thought was ‘early’ at the time) and go out. Logistically this is simply not a viable option now, unless of course I took the early rising children with me? Then there’s the evening. By last summer both the children were finally settling well at bedtime, and I found that I had up to 2 hours of what could laughably be called ‘free time’ some evenings. Now, with a 3 month old added into the mix, that’s out the window again for a while. So, I have reverted back to my lunchtime exercise routine. Aside from the heat, which invariably means I lose half my body weight in fluids on a run, it works well. It doesn’t impact on my home life and I even find
it gives me a bit more oomph in the afternoons. The showers at work are ridiculously hot, and the route is not inspiring, but it does the job. Well at least I presume its doing the job? I guess I continue to weigh the same as I did in 1994, and probably look the same (with the exception of the hairline). But I feel better, fitter and generally healthier than last month already. However, it’s always good to have a goal, an over arching purpose to the training. I have a few times and distances ‘to do before I am 40’ (…so in about 15 years, cough cough). But looking more long term, I want to be able to go out running/cycling with my kids when they are grown up… and keep up!

l Lavender can start to look a bit untidy once the flowers have faded. Use a pair of shears to give it a good trim back. l You can keep buddleia flowering by cutting off any flowers that have turned brown l If you haven’t done so already give your wisteria a prune l A number of flowers such as Aquilegia and Lady’s Mantle will turn to seed this month. if you want extra flowers then let these seeds drop. However if you don’t want loads of extra plants then make sure you remove all the flower heads.

Clear these into your compost heap and sow a late salad crops of lettuce, radish and onions l With the warm weather watering in particular is best done in the evening or the morning as are routine jobs such as weeding, hoeing and dead heading spent blooms
Rudbeckias are easy-to-grow perennials featuring golden, daisy like flowers with black or purple centres. They are best planted in large groups and will grow between 2 and 6 foot depending on the species. They are attractive to butterflies though also cut well for a vase. You can easily increase your stocks by division of the clump or allow self seeding Flowering can last from Summer to the first frosts when it is best to cut the stems down to about an inch above the soil. In the Spring it is worth applying a mulch around the plants.

WHAT’S ON IN AUGUST? Artheads ‘Colour Outside the Lines’ Exhibition Open Art Evening Sunday 10th August at 6pm
Artheads provides a safe, friendly, drug and alcohol free environment in which people can explore their imagination through art, music and other creative outlets. Finding a creative, social outlet like Artheads has been proven to help people who are at a crucial crossroads in their life. People who are trying to address their drug, alcohol or mental health problems face big challenges: these can range from having a lot of free time, to more entrenched issues, such as low confidence, poor self-esteem and the need to work through psychological issues. Our activities aim to engage the whole community in order to challenge stereotypes and misconceptions around addiction and mental health problems. We do this regardless of the ability to pay. Exhibition Artheads Art Co-ordinator, Bryan Thorpe explains,”Colour Outside the Lines is about freedom of creative expression - the essence of awareness of who you are as a person. More and more Society can seem to be a series of prescribed forms, questionnaires and tick boxes. Colour Outside the Lines is an exhibition of artwork by people who not afraid to express themselves or who worry about what people think. Most have already been on the margins of society but now through artistic expression they can grow and learn. Awakening their consciousness, having the strength to go where it leads and not being afraid where it takes them. The moreton hall community centre news Hello all and welcome to the August edition of the Moreton Hall Directory! Thanks all who came down and supported our Annual Funday on Sunday 27th July – a fantastic day was had, so we’d just like to say a big thank you to the organiser, Nigel Cross, and all who supported and helped him arrange what is always a long and tiring day that is absolutely well worth it! Bring on next year! We’d also like to say that although alas, England did not make it through the world cup, there was still a fantastic atmosphere in the clubroom regardless thanks to those who came down and supported England (even for the 3rd game, which was possibly just an excuse to have a drink or two...). Thanks to Matt and Nathan who organised the clubroom for those dates – all we can say is bring on the Euros! On Saturday August 2nd and August 30th we have the definite return of Saturday Night Bingo. July’s session was unfortunately post phoned, but we’re back and raring to go for some cheesy entertainment in the summer months! Starts from 7pm, kids are welcome to the first games where there are cans of drink and chocolatey goodies up for grabs, then we play for cash! On August 9th Dave Dobbyn is hosting a pre season race night for St Eds 66 football team – come on down if you want to support (a maybe even earn some cash while you’re at it!). Starts from approximately 8pm, and is bound to be a great night. We then have another in house darts tournament on 23rd August – it’s the same format as before, so for those wanting to test their arrow throwing skills, join us at 7pm to register with your fiver for entry and compete. All entrance money goes towards the prize fund – bring your friends, family – the more people enter, the more there is to win! On September 6th we’ve booked live band Retrio to perform in the clubroom - it’s free entry for all to get in, and it’s a themed 60’s/70’s night, where the band will be playing all of those, dare I say it, groovy classics you love! Dress up if you want, we will be aiming for an 8pm start.
We’ll be continuing our bingo nights and darts tournaments throughout the autumn and winter months, as well as putting on some great live music and disco events. On October 11th we’ve got a brilliant live band called Jukebox Fury to play in the hall for you all, which will be a fantastic event as anyone who has heard them play will know. On October 25th we’ve got our Halloween disco, where our club committee will run Halloween themed games for children before a spooky disco will start in the clubroom – always a good day for both kids and adults alike, and as with the vast majority of our events it is free entry to get in. In November we’ve got the long anticipated Family Fortunes Quiz! This is on Saturday November 8th, and remains the same format as with all of our quizzes - £1 to enter, with all entry money going towards cash prizes to the winning team! And it’s that time of year where we’re putting together our Christmas Offer for 2014! We’ve got 4 nights planned this year on the 12th/13th December, and then the following week on the 19th/20th December. The first weekend of the 12th/13th December we’re putting on a buffet/ disco night, complete with table decorations and an arrival drink, for the rather tempting price of £14.95 per head! And then the following weekend of the 19th/20th we are doing a 3 course sit down meal, complete with live band, arrival drinks, and festive tables laden with decorations.
