Welcome to the July issue

July has arrived, bringing with it the height of summer and the start of the school holidays for many. Whether you’re planning days out or making the most of the longer evenings, there’s plenty happening to keep everyone entertained.

At the time of writing, England are still going strong in the World Cup, and with Wimbledon getting underway, sports fans have plenty to look forward to. Keeping with the tennis theme, our recipe this month is a delicious Strawberry Marshmallow Mousse – a simple summer treat inspired by one of Wimbledon’s most famous flavours.

Looking ahead to August, Wyken Vineyards will be hosting a month-long “Wellness at Wyken” event, featuring a wide range of classes, workshops and wellbeing activities in a beautiful lakeside setting. With everything from yoga and Pilates to mindfulness, crafts and nature-based experiences on offer, it promises to be a fantastic addition to the local calendar. Booking is now open, so if it sounds like something you’d enjoy, be sure to reserve your place. Find out more on page 48.

We’re proud to feature the many businesses that help make this magazine possible. If you’re looking for products, services or inspiration this summer, please do support the local advertisers.

Enjoy the issue, have a wonderful July, and we’ll be back next month with more.

HOW WE HELP…

This month we celebrate our support to our near neighbours at West Suffolk Hospital, and St Nicholas Hospice, offering our great facility free when they need a venue. Last month there was a fantastic celebration party where some 90 valued volunteers were thanked for their dedication and commitment, when the West Suffolk Blanketeers celebrated their 7th birthday.

The Blanketeers meet once a month at the Southgate Community Centre, which started in the chapel of the hospital. They have grown considerably over the years and being able to meet at the Centre is really making a difference. Their aim is to knit blankets and bears for the palliative care team at the hospital, providing comfort and support to patients receiving

end of life care. They have made an impressive 700 blankets in just the past year. Chief nurse, Dan Spooner, thanked members for their outstanding contribution and Sally Daniels from My WiSH Charity, highlighted how their efforts enhance patient care across the Trust. Anyone interested in joining the Blanketeers is welcome to come along. They meet on the second Wednesday of each month at 2pm at the Centre.

Our Chairman of Trustees Andy Abbott and son Archie decided to throw themselves our of a perfectly sound aircraft at 13,000 ft and freefall at 120mph to raise funds for the £1m Appeal for robot assisted surgery. Seemed like a good idea at the time!! Huge thanks to all who supported them and helped raise over £1,200.

We were intrigued to be invited to bring an empty tin and milk bottle to our June meeting! Our speaker was Michelle from Crafty Foxes who told us how she came to set up her business making everyday items into recycled craft. Then she showed us how to transform the tin into a bee. It was great fun and with much chat and laughter as we made the bees.

Some of Michelle’s ideas (and a few bees) will be on display in the Abbey Gardens shortly, so do keep a look out and marvel at what can be achieved with discarded everyday items.

Our July meeting is open to all so do come along to our July Meeting to find out more about how to CPR and first aid. Tickets are £5 on the door or for more information contact Alison on 07557 005343 or look for us on Facebook.

Local author publishes five novels to help animals

Local author Levity Brown has turned her storytelling into a fundraising opportunity by publishing five quirky, unique novels.

The books, written under the pen name of Levity Brown between 2010 and 2012, were penned as an attempt to save a Norfolk library from closing. The stories proved very popular, but a move to Bury St Edmunds meant she shelved the books for over 10 years.

Then, a chance meeting with a local company that supports authors led to the five books finally being published.

“Each story has a twist to it,” Levity explains. “I always describe them as the What if… elements. What if you could alter the course of history? What if you could live in a better world? And so on. A good story is a great place to go on a rainy day, and I have loved writing these books.”

“The five novels were always intended to entertain and also do some good in the world, so the profits from the books will be going to animal charities. I love animals, so it seems fitting that sales of my books will go to help find new homes for unwanted pets.”

Well known locally, Levity Brown already has interest from several businesses in the area, who want to hold copies of her books.

Ewen’s Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge

Discover upcoming fundraising challenges for My WiSH Charity

The West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust’s chief executive, Dr Ewen Cameron, has been spending his time off in some of prettiest areas of the country, as he prepares for his biggest fundraising challenge yet.

2025 saw Ewen run seven half marathons in seven days to raise money for our £1 million appeal for a surgical robot, but he’s now decided our fairly flat Suffolk roads are not enough of a challenge, and is planning on running the Yorkshire 3 Three Peaks this July.

This mighty challenge, normally a 24-hour trek, will see Ewen run up and down Pen-y-ghent, Whernside, and Ingleborough - covering around 24 miles.

Ewen said, “Training to run the Yorkshire Three Peaks is going well with visits to North Wales and Scotland hillwalking, as well as lots

of long runs. It’s going to be exceptionally hard - nearly a marathon with ascents equivalent to climbing Ben Nevis - but for an important cause which will transform surgery for the people of West Suffolk”.

Joanne Landucci, head of fundraising, said, “We are incredibly proud of Ewen for taking on this challenge. Ewen is a valued supporter of the charity and

a passionate champion of our campaign to raise funds for the surgical robot. We wish him the very best of luck and look forward to supporting him every step of the way.”

Complete

your bucket list and support My WiSH Charity

If you’re looking for a reason to push your limits, discover new places, and

Dr Ewen Cameron

create memories that will stay with you forever just like Ewen, My WiSH Charity has four incredible adventures waiting for you. Whether you’re a cyclist, a climber, or a thrill-seeker, these challenges don’t just test your endurance, they change lives. Every mile, every step, and every leap helps us support patients and staff across the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust.

Take a look at our upcoming events:

Cycle from London to Paris

A journey between two of Europe’s most iconic cities, this ride is a bucket-list classic. You’ll roll through the English countryside, cross the Channel, and glide past French villages before arriving at the Eiffel Tower. Riders love the epic scenery, and a finish line like no other.

Climb the National Three Peaks

Three mountains.

Twenty-four hours. One extraordinary test of determination. You’ll summit Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike, and Snowdon in a single, unforgettable push. It’s tough, it’s exhilarating, and it’s one of the most rewarding challenges you’ll ever complete. Adventurers choose this legendary UK challenge to experience a team spirit like no other, and

witness views that make the whole climb worth it.

Take on the Yorkshire Three Peaks

Shorter than the national challenge but no less mighty, the Yorkshire Three Peaks route covers Pen-y-ghent, Whernside, and Ingleborough in a single 24-mile loop. It’s a favourite for walkers who want a big challenge with a strong sense of achievement and some of the best landscapes in the country.

Skydive for My WiSH Charity

If you want a challenge that delivers pure adrenaline in

one breathtaking moment, this is it. Nothing compares to the rush of stepping out of a plane and free-falling through the sky before drifting gently back to earth. You’ll never forget the once-in-a-lifetime view, and that moment of courage you’ll always be proud of.

Why do it for My WiSH Charity?

Every challenge you take on helps us fund projects that make a real difference to patients, families, and NHS staff. From enhancing hospital environments to supporting specialist equipment and wellbeing initiatives, your adventure helps improve someone else’s care.

POSTCARD CLUB

British Gallantry Awards was the subject of Rob Durrell’s recent talk. This included a display of medals, and an explanation of how they were won.

Sergeant James William Norris, RAF Volunteer Reserve, 61 Squadron was awarded the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal (Flying) for displaying courage, fortitude and determination of the highest order.

He was the flight engineer of an aircraft sent to attack Dusseldorf in WW2. The aircraft sustained extensive damage, killing the navigator and injuring the pilot and crew. Sergeant Norris, despite a wounded arm, took control of the aircraft when the pilot collapsed. Upon reaching the UK, the semi-conscious pilot

managed to land the aircraft, only then did Sergeant Norris disclose his injury.

Keeping cool…

It may be tempting to try and do without your compression garment(s) but, without the support, in the heat your limb(s) will likely swell more than is normal for you and make your lymphoedema and/or lipoedema swelling worse.

• Pop your compression garment(s) in a sandwich

Some hints and tips for keeping as cool as cucumbers:

type bag and leave in the fridge overnight, so it’s cool to put on. Do Not put your compression garment in the freezer!

• Carry a small spray bottle of water with you when out and about and periodically spray your garment(s),and yourself. Keep spray bottles in the fridge to keep them cool.

• Cooling blankets, towels, wrist bands and neck wraps can make a big difference in helping to keep cool, as well using battery operated fans too.

• UV protection umbrellas and parasols can help provide sun protection if you are out and about.

• Do keep well hydrated!

At LSS’s 3rd August meeting Kerrie Frances, Lymphoedema Nurse from North Essex Health Trust, will be demonstrating armchair yoga and also telling us all about the benefits of this to those with lymphoedema and lipoedema. Yoga is excellent exercise for helping to keep the lymphatic fluids moving and armchair yoga makes this available to those who aren’t as steady on their feet or find standing up for too long difficult.

Superb day of nature, art and investigation at the Bury Wildlife Festival

We’re pleased to report that a great time was had by all at the fifth Bury Wildlife Festival in the Abbey Gardens in May. Lasting a full week, several schools immersed themselves in wildlife on Friday, followed by the main event on Saturday – stalls, talks, walks and bug safaris. Then, starting on Sunday, a very successful fourday exhibition in the Cathedral cloisters.

Three schools brought 180 children along, who spent Friday creating art inspired by

things they saw and heard on guided walks, all ably lead by Jackie and Jac. Their art was gathered up and while the main event was happening the next day, Daisy set up an exhibition in the cloisters. Warm sunshine and blue sky greeted us on Saturday when around 1,000 people took part in talks at the stalls and walks with various experts. Non-stop bug safaris were led by Gill and Sue with our walkers recording 126 observations of 58 species, the bulk of which were insects and spiders (because as you

know, spiders aren’t insects!).

Ross kicked off the stall talks with a load of rubbish...! Of course, I mean figuratively, not literally – he talked about the impact of litter on our environment, our mental health and our wildlife. He was delighted to discover how many people actively clean their local green spaces and was equally pleased to welcome lots of new volunteers. Also featured were several pieces of antique rubbish in a pop-up Litter Museum with some items dating from the early 1980s and 90s. One crisp packet featured a Spice Girl. It’s startling evidence of how persistent litter can be.

Every time a new talk started, Sharon and Libby moved the chairs and benches to the featured stall so the stallholder could address their audience with all their props around them. We had motivating talks from, among others, Larkwood Lakes, Sustainable Plants, Suffolk Prickles Hedgehog

Rescue, RLCP, the Abbey Reborn project, Suffolk Action for Wildlife and Suffolk Birds.

The walks were no less interesting. They started off with a dawn chorus walk, then a beginners’ introduction to 100 plants and an amusing stroll with Acorn Ecology called Be Enlichened. Who’d have thought lichen have such interesting lives?

Alongside the walks and talks, children and adults alike made bug hotels out of various recycled materials and natural objects. Volunteers had been collecting these for months, storing them in Gill’s garden before the big day. Hopefully people have now installed their hotels at home so the bugs have had somewhere to shelter since the weather well and truly broke a few days ago.

Our exhibition was entitled ‘Revealing our Living

Landscape’. Designed to explore the sights, sounds and feelings you get from a walk in the Bury water meadows, the school children’s art was accompanied by various bits and pieces from the meadows themselves. It was all skillfully curated by Daisy and supported by the Abbey Reborn project, who gave us

the space in the cloisters to use. Many people attended either having heard about it before or simply because they were walking through the cloisters. Jac and her helpers had recorded an intriguing soundtrack of insects going about their lives underwater in the ditches, as well as the dawn chorus on the Butts. Played throughout the exhibition, the birdsong made for a calming backdrop in the cloisters.

We’re grateful to everyone who came along or gave up their time to make this event happen. Make sure you join us next year when we’ll be doing it all again!

Living with a long term condition can take a lot out

of you and overachieving day in day out can certainly take the wind out of your sails.

As you get older it can creep up on you that your strength and energy isn’t what it used to be. It is hard to accept however if you have come to this point, you may have to look at other ways of doing things that do not impact on your body in quite the same way.

We are all unique individuals and long term conditions can affect many areas of our lives. We have to be kind to ourselves and listen to our bodies when we need to.

Need more from your existing solar installation?

If you already have solar, invest in a retrofit battery storage system

The electricity you generate from your solar panels can’t always be used immediately. A battery storage system is simple and relatively inexpensive to fit and can store any unused power to use in the evening, overnight, or to power an electric vehicle – the choice is yours.

A battery gives you your own renewable energy source, available to you 24 hours a day for however you want to use it.

If you’ve had solar panels fitted in the last few years, you may have been put off by the size of the batteries. Solar technology has advanced to the point where modern batteries are compact, more powerful, simple to retrofit and easy to store in the home, the loft and garage.

Most domestic properties will only require 5-8kW (enough to power an entire home for ten hours), but if you need more energy storage you can add additional batteries at any stage.

Cricket Club BURY ST EDMUNDS

We are almost half way through the cricket season, generally the weather has been good, a great deal of cricket has been played at all levels.

At senior level the club has provided cricket for 4 teams almost every Saturday, during the week practice sessions, coaching and many junior cricket matches have been played. Recently the ground hosted a Women’s Cricket Festival with ladies and girls of various abilities enjoying cricket. Much of the emphasis is on simply enjoying the

game in a relaxed family atmosphere. The Victory Ground has also hosted a girls cricket day with 8 local schools taking part.

Junior cricket from All Stars (Ages 5-8) and Dynamos (Aged 8-11) have been taking place on a Sunday morning. Bury St Edmunds have a very keen group of under 9 players (see photograph). Matches involve players batting in pairs for 4 overs each, scoring runs can be negated by losing a wicket which results in a 5 run deduction.

Players delight in whacking a specially adapted soft cricket ball over the boundary. The match involves when in the field everyone of the 8 players rotating so that everyone bowls fields and keeps wicket during the course of the innings. Even at this age group some outstanding catches can take place, the running between the wickets can be sometime chaotic which add to the fun.

We are most grateful to the coaches who give up their time to enable cricket to take place.

Dear…

When was the last time you wrote a letter to someone?

There are so many reasons why we no longer reach for a pen and paper; Our phones, our computer’s, the cost to post a letter, because of this our way of communicating has changed. I used to like buying postcards on holiday, and writing a little up date to family I didn’t see very often. I enjoyed receiving, and sending letters to Grandparents, and I know this was reciprocated.

As we get older, we enjoy the time we have more, but we still may not change our habits. Like many of you, our extended family have a what’s app group to stay in touch, which started when one of the family became unwell, and it was a good way to stay in touch without over burdening those dealing with ill health or life and death situations.

Jesus lived in a predominantly oral society teachings were memorized, not written down. Which is one of the reason people are sceptical about his life. However, the bestselling

book, (worldwide) the Bible are to me like thousands of letters to the world written by those who passed down the stories of what happened first hand. Can you imagine how many more people would have faith if Jesus had written the Bible himself? Or do you think there would be even more sceptic’s as it would be one person’s words rather than the 40 or so authors over a period of 1,500 years?

If you have said goodbye to a family member or friends, who have died, do you ever think about writing them a letter, even if its just in your head? I had the opportunity to go and see ‘Letters Live’ where Letters that can be written hundreds of years ago or last week are read out by famous people. Sue Perkins came, and she had written a letter to her dog, Pickle who died in 2014. (On YouTube type in Sue Perkins letter’s live). Sue has the opportunity to convey the rollercoaster of time with Pickles that she had, and opens up to an audience about not being able to have children, and

Pickles having cancer twice. There are many laugh out loud moments Sue describes as well as those that bring tears to your eyes. But I haven’t forgotten that Letter, and it made me think how many of us wish we could say something to someone who has died or someone we no longer see any more? Yes, it may take you time to write the words, and it may need a few attempts, but wouldn’t it be wonderful to share those thoughts, to connect through words even if you are taking it to a headstone or posting it in a Letterbox, or even keeping it safe for another generation to read. Why not change your habit’s and indulge yourself in the process, an see how it makes you feel. I am off to write to my uncle as I haven’t seen him for nearly a year!

If the stories from the Bible helped you with you faith maybe you could write down moments in your life you would like future generations to read about so they can reflect on how you came to believe in Jesus.

From trout lakes to Nature Reserve

In the short 42 year history of Larkwood lakes, much has happened on it’s journey to becoming a nature reserve. If you had stood in the centre of West Stow Lake 43 years ago, you would be on dry land with nothing around you but an open field surrounded by trees. It took the vision of the original owner to turn a small piece of land into trout lakes.

My supposition is that he struck up a deal with an aggregate company who came to the land and proceeded to dig out the sand and gravel for their business, leaving two large holes specifically designed as a trout fishery. The lakes have an island each and the shoreline is random with indents and promontories, now I may be wrong but for commercial reasons any aggregate company would take the shortest route to profit by digging a rectangular pit and moving on. Anyway, whatever the reason we are eternally grateful to be given the opportunity to fulfil a longtime dream and temporarily act as guardians for a small part of Suffolk.

One of the great features of Larkwood Lakes is that the water level never drops, due to freshwater springs feeding into the lakes from a huge aquifer under much of Suffolk. This high water level was an asset

for the fishery, as trout are oxygen hungry so the greater the volume of water to fish density, the better the conditions for survival. For 30 years all went well, but then fish losses followed after very hot summers and the re-introduction of otters into the area, which quickly began to impact fish stocks while also causing the fish to hide for long periods. Fish catches dropped off and soon the fishery became unviable.

Ian saw the writing on the wall and set the lakes up as a ‘Certificated site’ with the ‘Camping and Caravanning Club’ to generate income and keep them thriving. Two years later Ian and his wife Sue moved on, and in 2019 we were lucky enough to win a fierce battle to take over the lakes. Three months after moving in COVID lockdown was imposed, which gave us time to work on the lakes and understand the land and water before opening the CS site. We welcomed hundreds of campers for a year and a half but realised it was not right for us, as we had bought the lakes to run as a nature reserve and everything else was supplementary.

Now it is a haven for wildlife and I feel privileged to help a small area of England fulfil its own biodiversity.

Of course, we need some money to maintain the site and this is provided by the following:

Doing the right thing

Some years ago, I was working as an Art Director in an advertising agency in London. I had just been made a board director and so my career seemed to be on the up.

Around that time, the Creative Director turned 40. and people began planning his birthday party. One morning, the Managing Director told me that he had booked a stripper to come to the party, to “liven things up a bit”, as he put it.

That evening I thought about this idea and felt that it was wrong for many reasons. And so, the next morning I asked the MD’s PA for the number of the stripper’s agency. I rang them and cancelled the booking. That night I went home and prayed about the situation, asking God to intervene.

At the party, the Managing Director found out that I had cancelled the stripper. He was apoplectic and asked me who the **** I thought I was..? But then the Creative Director arrived and we saw that he had unexpectedly brought his wife.

The next day the Managing Director called me into his office, apologised and thanked me for cancelling the stripper.

In today’s world, we often find that our Christian values are very different to the values of those we live and work amongst. Normally, we do all we can to live peaceably with our neighbours and so we try to be patient,

tolerant and flexible. But every now and then, a situation arises that challenges us to speak out or to do something, even though we know that this will disappoint, anger or confuse those around us. In these instances, we can feel that we are being asked to choose between pleasing people and pleasing God. This can be hard and potentially costly because obeying God nearly always requires us to make a personal sacrifice.

However, it’s when we decide to be faithful to God, that we experience his faithfulness to us.

We meet every Sunday Morning at 10.30am in the Community Centre Main Hall with groups for children of all ages.

Service of Holy Communion is on the third Sunday of the month.

THE 19TH HOLE

Email: adamtrettpga@hotmail.co.uk Facebook: Adam Trett - ADT Golf Coaching

Welcome back to the 19th hole, well that’s three majors complete for 2026. I know, I can’t believe it either and that means one thing, this month brings us to The Open Championship.

Again the US Open didn’t disappoint and now Wyndham Clark has added to his major count.

Just like every year the course had its talking points but Wyndham seemed to mastering the course for the first three days. Sunday became close down the stretch with Sam Burns pushing Wyndham all the way to the end. The main talking point about most US open courses is the rough… grown to 5 inches deep and always very hard to play from, stay tuned for this months coaches corner for help with this.

This year sees The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale. The golf club makes the following statements about the club and course, Situated on the golden links of the North West coast in Southport, Royal Birkdale is possibly the finest of all courses in England and has held The Open Championship 10 times.

THE BIGGEST QUESTION as always is… Who will win this years Open Championship? This time I am not going to try and guess the winner as my track record isn’t that good. But it would be nice to have another English major winner in 2026.

COACHES CORNER: HOW TO GET OUT OF THE ROUGH!

Below are some helpful tips from escaping tricky lies.

Things to DO

Don’t get too brave from these lies, select enough loft to get the ball from these lies. After selecting a club opening face slightly will allow you to stop the club head closing at impact by the longer grass length. Reposition your weight, shift across onto your lead foot. This will allow you to create a steeper angle of attack into the ball and with the lofted club you have selected will give you a great chance to escape this lie.

Swing steeper and hold on tight, being steeper and holding it a bit tighter to the club through impact will help you stop the club face closing through impact and get you back into play.

Things to AVOID

Don’t try and help it up and out… you have changed your set up to help yourself come down steeper so don’t try and help it out, and lean back.

Just commit to these changes and swing down and through the shot, try not to let your weight fall onto your back foot.

Do not expect full control over this shot, remember it’s a shot you’re either trying to get back into position or are happy if it hits the green or surrounding areas. If you expect too much from these lies then you will often find yourself playing the same shot again or worse, get back in play first before taking on shots to the green.

Hopefully putting these simple steps into your game when you need to escape some tricky lies will help.

If you are having problems with this or any other part of your game, then I would be pleased to assist you in enjoying this game more. As this should be the most important aspect for anyone’s round of golf. Enjoy your golf in July and I will speak to you again next month.
