1. NFRF – International Joint Initiative (2026)
The New Frontiers in Research Fund (NFRF) – International Joint Initiative supports ambitious, interdisciplinary, and transformative international research projects addressing major global societal challenges, with explicit alignment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Principal Investigator / Team Structure
• Minimum 3 Co-Principal Investigators (Co-PIs)
• Each Co-PI must be eligible to receive funding from a different participating funding organization
• At least one Co-PI must be eligible to apply to NFRF
• International collaboration is mandatory
• Teams must be interdisciplinary
• Inclusion of at least one SSH Co-PI strongly recommended
• Individuals may not serve as Co-PI on more than one application
• Multi-stage process:
o Notice of Intent (NOI)
o Letter of Intent (LOI)
o Full Application (by invitation only)
Funding
• Up to $400,000/year in direct research costs
• Up to 25% indirect costs
• Maximum total: $500,000/year
• Duration: up to 3 years
Thematic Scope
• No fixed disciplinary themes
• Projects must:
o Address at least one UN SDG
o Be interdisciplinary
o Demonstrate transformative (not incremental) impact
o Show potential for paradigm shifts in research, policy, or practice
o Integrate ethical, social, and governance considerations where relevant

3. McGill / Horizon Europe – ERC Synergy Grant
Eligibility
• Open to 2–4 Principal Investigators
• PIs must demonstrate:
o Scientific independence
o Outstanding track records
o Complementary expertise creating genuine synergy
• PIs may be based in different institutions and countries
• No nationality restrictions
• One institution serves as the coordinating host
Principal Investigator / Team Structure
• 2–4 PIs (equal scientific responsibility)
• No lead PI hierarchy
• Additional team members allowed (postdocs, PhDs, etc.)
Funding
• Up to €10 million for up to 6 years
• Additional €4 million possible for:
o Major equipment
o Large research facilities
o Extensive fieldwork
o Relocation/start-up costs
