Where does the name Moose Jaw come from?

There are many stories related to the origin of the name “Moose Jaw”. It is believed to originate from two potential Indigenous Cree words “Mosocapiskan” or “Moscastani-sipiy”. Indigenous scholar Arok Wolvengrey believes that Moscastani-sipiy is the original Cree name for the Moose Jaw River and surrounding area. This translates to “river of warm breezes, river of slighter winds”. Moose Jaw likely comes from the phonetics of this word rather than translation.

Why is Moose Jaw “Canada’s Most Notorious City?

Moose Jaw’s slogan is “Canada’s Most Notorious City” because of our colorful and sometimes dark past, especially during the Prohibition era in the 1920s and 30s. Today, we embrace our “notorious” label with a wink, using it to tell engaging stories, run fun tours like the Tunnels of Moose Jaw Tours, and promote our city’s one-of-a-kind history.

Just south of Moose Jaw, a visit to Sukanen Ship Pioneer Village and Museum offers something truly unexpected on the Prairies: a full-sized ocean-going ship, built by hand, far from any sea.

At the centre is the story of Tom Sukanen, who set out in the 1920s to build a ship on the Saskatchewan plains in hopes of returning home. Though the journey was never completed, the vessel remains as a lasting symbol of perseverance and determination.

Surrounding the ship, a pioneer village brings early Saskatchewan to life. Historic buildings, vintage farm equipment, and curated exhibits reflect the resilience and resourcefulness of those who settled here, offering a hands-on look at life on the Prairies.

The Burrowing Owl is a prairie icon that continues to face extreme hardships. Since the 1980’s their range has shrunk by more than half and scientist have estimated that over 94% of Burrowing Owls have disappeared from the Canadian prairies.

The Burrowing Owl was officially listed as an endangered species in 1995. Historically Moose Jaw and the surrounding area were a hotspot for a local population of burrowing owls. In 1992 there were 39 pairs of owls nesting throughout the city, but by 2006 not a single nest remained.

The Saskatchewan Burrowing Owl Interpretive Centre (SBOIC) opened its doors to the public in 1997 with the mandate to promote the conservation of Burrowing Owls and their prairie habitat, through education, eco-tourism and stewardship. Our educational programs are provided year-round with in-house visits to the Centre from the May to the September long weekend as well as our “Owls on Tour” program. This is a traveling program that consists of a presentation, pictures, skits, and stories as well as the opportunity to meet one of our ambassador owls. Over the years SBOIC has also added a small parliament of burrowing owls, a Short-Eared Owl and several Richardson’s ground squirrel to our

SBOIC is the only facility of its kind in Saskatchewan, and as a non-profit organization we are dependant upon partnerships with industry, government and the public to help continue our work with the owls and to fulfill our education mandate.

Canada’s Snowbirds –A Moose Jaw Legacy

For more than five decades, the Canadian Forces Snowbirds have called Moose Jaw home, bringing precision flying and Canadian pride to audiences across North America.

Formed in Moose Jaw in 1971 under the leadership of former Canadian Forces Base Moose Jaw Commander Colonel O.B. Philp, the Canadian Forces Snowbirds have grown into one of the world’s most respected military aerobatic teams. Flying the legendary CT-114 Tutor aircraft, which served as Canada’s primary jet trainer from the 1960s to the early 2000s, the Snowbirds have proudly represented both Moose Jaw and Canada on stages across North America for more than five decades.

The team’s reach has extended from performances above the Arctic Circle to appearances as far south as Mexico. Over their distinguished history, the Snowbirds have completed more than 2,880 airshow performances and over 1,000 flypasts. Their precision flying has been showcased at events of international significance, including performances for royalty, the Commonwealth Games, the Olympic Games, Formula One races, and Canada’s own Grey Cup.

It is estimated that more than 155 million people have witnessed the Snowbirds in action, experiencing firsthand the Skills, Professionalism, and Teamwork that defines every performance. The team is comprised not only of highly trained pilots, but also of dedicated technicians and support personnel whose behind-the-scenes expertise ensures each display is executed safely and flawlessly.

In 2026, the Snowbirds proudly celebrate their 55th anniversary, marking a milestone that highlights Moose Jaw’s enduring connection to one of Canada’s most iconic and inspiring air demonstration teams.

Whether you’re discovering Moose Jaw for the first time or seeing it from a new perspective, climbing aboard the trolley is a fun and memorable way to explore the city’s history and character.

Located in the heart of Crescent Park, the Moose Jaw Museum & Art Gallery brings together the art, history, and experiences that have shaped our community. What started as a small effort to preserve local history has grown into a nationally recognized institution that continues to evolve. Today, it serves as both a cultural anchor and an active gathering place, where residents and visitors can connect with the people, events, and ideas that define the region.

The gallery is now home to more than 7,000 historical artifacts and 3,000 works of art. These are presented through rotating exhibitions across the main gallery, the lobby, and the Moose Jaw Co-op Discovery Centre, alongside hands-on learning spaces that invite people to spend time exploring.

MJMAG maintains an ongoing commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action. The gallery invites and supports Indigenous Knowledge Holders, Elders, artists, and

curators to lead and inform programming. With this approach, the gallery continues to evolve how Indigenous histories and cultural narratives are shared. An Indigenous Advisory Committee helps guide this work and supports the development of policies, including repatriation for collections of living cultural objects. This commitment is reflected not only in what is presented, but in how it is developed and shared with the community.

Recent initiatives include an Indigenous Artist and Curator in Residence program led by Sadi-Rose Vaxvick, which developed a new exhibit in the museum. Môso-tâpiskan: Indigenous Living Heritage shares stories from Treaty 4 nations through living objects, ranging from 8,000-year-old projectile points to detailed beadwork. This work extends beyond the gallery and includes the 2025 repatriation of cultural artifacts to the Kahkewistahaw Cree First Nation, reflecting a commitment that goes beyond exhibition into action and into long-term relationships with communities.

Wakšúpi is one example of how the gallery successfully brings art and heritage together. Curated by Dr. Claire Thomson, it shared Lakota history through historic, beaded living objects. The exhibition ran from September 2023 to September 2024 and was recognized on the Office of the Treaty Commissioner’s Treaty 4 Timeline as a significant moment in regional history.

Our summer exhibitions launch on May 22, featuring Odyssey by Alison Norlen, a series of large-scale drawings that explore the objects that make up a home. The season also presents Stilled Lives from the permanent collection, examining historic and contemporary still life, as well as With Pride, a selection presented in partnership with PRISM in support of Pride Month. Together, these exhibitions offer a range of perspectives, from personal and domestic to collective and cultural.

MJMAG’s public hours are 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm, Wednesday to Friday; 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm, Saturday; and 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm, Sunday.

The valley has long been a gathering place, with deep connections to Indigenous history and the early days of settlement in the region. Today, that sense of community continues through local events, interpretive sites, and the ongoing efforts to preserve and celebrate this natural treasure.

Holiday Traditions–The Season Comes Early

In Moose Jaw, the holiday spirit arrives well before December. Early in the season, the city comes alive with lights, festivities, and traditions, creating a cheerful atmosphere that lasts through the new year.

The holiday fun begins with Christmas in October. Downtown shops fill with festive displays and stay open late, inviting people to get into the spirit early. For many, it’s become a beloved tradition and the perfect way to start the season.

The annual Santa Claus Parade, organized by the Moose Jaw Kinsmen Club, brings the community together along Main Street. Floats, lights, and familiar faces line the route, wrapping with the lighting of the community Christmas tree.

In Wakamow Valley, the Valley of Lights features stunning displays and themed sections to explore by car or on foot.

Wagon rides and seasonal characters enhance the festive atmosphere, making it a favourite each year.
