Busy season ahead for Sukanen Ship Museum Ron Walter - For Moose Jaw Express

The Sukanen Ship Pioneer Village and Museum is planning a busy year, says President Gord Ross. “We’re going to have a busy season’’when the gates open Wednesday May 13. The Museum will conduct five special events during the period to Sept.13 as well as see new construction. “We’ve got two new buildings going up.’’ One, located at the edge of the parade marshalling grounds, will house a collection of old trucks from a Lethbridge, Aberta collector. The museum already has two of the vintage trucks and has to bring up the rest from Alberta. Unfortunately, the collector just passed away, but the construction of a 58 foot by 120 foot building and the truck donation were documented. He had recently bought another vintage White truck model from the 1920s. The second building will be erected for Matt Sattler of Wilcox to house the airplane his father used to spray crops. “His father used to be a member. He donated a freight shed and a Gleaner combine.’’ The truck building will be open for the Threshing Bee but the sprayer plane 46 by 120 building won’t be open until later in the fall. Ross said the heated shop building was used a lot over ts first winter. “On Wednesdays we had a minimum of eight guys out there and sometimes 12. We did a lot of maintenance.’’ Major work by volunteers this season includes rebuilding the rotting platform on the CN Rail station. As always, the volunteer-run museum is looking for more volunteers to replace some aging out. “I tell them they should come out Wednesday morning, have coffee with us, meet the guys and talk about what they

want to do, what they can do.’’ Since its first year in 1969 the museum has had Wednesday work days when much of the work happens, The five special events during the season are : — Spring Fling car show and shine, June 6 — Outdoor Flea Market, June 21 — Family Day, July 19 — Threshing Bee Sept. 12-13 Museum hours are 10 am to 5 pm Monday to Saturday, and noon to 6 pm Sundays.
