Windmill Greenhouses will officially open for the season on May 1, with updated details confirming the business is currently completing final setup ahead of its annual spring launch. Manager Brenna Wells said the greenhouse is not yet open to the public as staff wrap up seasonal preparations, with opening day set to coincide with its “Gardening by Moonlight” event. The evening event, which begins at 7 p.m. on-site, will once again offer a unique after-hours shopping experience inside the greenhouse. “It’s an evening event where you can take a look at our selection. It’ll be under patio lights, fairy lights, and candles. It’s just a different atmosphere. It’s beautiful, actually — it’s dark outside, and everything’s lit up inside. It’s really pretty,” she said. “And we have a selection of cupcakes, cookies, and punch to go with it, so you can enjoy a little treat while shopping.” The event is designed to offer a relaxed, informal shopping experience for visitors. “Come at your own pace and enjoy your evening,” Wells said. “People can plan their gardens before they get started — you can get an idea of what you want to use or plant this year.” Following the opening event, Windmill will operate on limited hours from 1 to 4 p.m. daily until Mother’s Day, when the greenhouse transitions into its full seasonal schedule. After that point, hours will expand to 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 to 4 p.m. on Sundays. Wells said many plants and products will be available immediately upon opening, with further inventory arriving shortly after. “We have our moss as usual, and perennials will be coming starting May 5. So there’s shrubs, strawberries, perennial lilies, and things

like that,” she said. “(There is) a lot of variety.” Although there are no significant changes from past years, the greenhouse continues to tailor its offerings in response to customer demand. “Each year I listen to what customers want and remember it for the next year,” Wells said, noting interest in ornamental trees, shrubs, berries, and perennial flowers. Much of Windmill’s product line is grown and assembled on-site, a point of pride for the long-running greenhouse, where several staff members have been part of the operation for more than two decades. “We do everything from scratch here. Everything except the perennials is put together on-site,” she said. “All our hanging baskets are handmade here, and all our floor pots are assembled on-site.” Wells added that each arrangement is intentionally unique. “I try to make them all different … so if you get one, it’s a great gift because it’s unique.” As in past years, Mother’s Day is expected to be one of the busiest periods, and Wells said customers often shop early for the best selection. She also credited the greenhouse’s longstanding team for its continued success. “It’s the same great staff as always — without them, we wouldn’t be here. They’re amazing, and they work really hard,” Wells said. “It’s a familiar group, with some staff having worked here for 20 or even 25 years.” Windmill Greenhouses is located at 1640 Ominica Street East and can be reached at 306-692-1663.
