Furrows and Faith offers an ideal small-town retirement venue for Mossbank area residents

Furrows and Faith Retirement Co-operative Limited offers an ideal independent living venue in Mossbank, Sask., for older adults who prefer to enjoy the perks of retirement outside of the big city.

Dale Nagel, a long-serving member of the board who was also on the original building committee, said the residence stands apart because of “a little bit more one-on-one with the workers” and a better worker to resident ratio, “a little bit more

of a home feeling,” and of course, “a little better cooking” than you might find elsewhere.

Furrows and Faith was established in December 2011 by Beverley Singbeil and Betty Ray with the mission of providing affordable retirement and assisted living options in the Mossbank area.

“The people that got the ball rolling on it saw the need for some housing in the area that would keep people that maybe didn’t need to be in a full retirement home,” Nagel explained. The goal was to also allow older area residents to stay close to friends, family, and their community without having to move to a larger centre.

At the time, Nagel said one of the founders had a

According to the home’s website, Mossbank “has always been behind keeping our facility going so our residents can stay in a safe, caring environment, where they could be close to nature and close to their children, grandchildren, and friends.”

Mossbank itself has around 360 residents (2016 Census) and the village features a few amenities including a modern swimming pool, hockey, and curling rink, a ninehole sand green golf course, a K to 12 school, grocery store and restaurant, and three church denominations.

The home features 12 single, 325 square foot rooms along with three couples’ suites and one studio room. Both single and double room layouts are available, and each unit comes with its own bathroom including a walk-in shower. An elderly gent was invited to his old friends’ home for dinner one evening. He was impressed by the way his buddy preceded every request to his with endearing terms-Honey, My Love, Darling, Sweetheart, Pumpkin, etc.

The couple had been married almost 70 years, and clearly they were still very much in love. While the

wife was in the kitchen, the man leaned over and said to his host, “I think it’s wonderful that, after all these years, you still call your wife those loving pet names.”

The old man hung his head. “I have to tell you the truth,” he said, “I forgot her name about 10 years ago.”

Moose Jaw Fire Department Fire Safety Tips for Older Adults

Knowing what to do in the event of a fire is particularly important for older adults. At age 65 and older, people are twice as likely to be killed or injured by fires compared to the population at large and with our numbers growing every year it's essential to take the necessary steps to stay safe.

Make sure a fire never starts by following these simple tips:

 Don’t reach for danger! Wear tight-fitting or rolled-up sleeves when cooking and don’t reach over a hot burner. Always stay in the kitchen when you are cooking, never leave cooking food unattended. Cooking fires are the number one cause of fire injuries among older adults. If you need to step away, you should turn off the stove.

 Always blow out candles before leaving the room.

 Ensure items that can burn are one meter (3 feet) away from space heaters.

 Avoid overloading the electrical outlets. Extension cords should be used only as a temporary connection.

 Avoid running cords under rugs, which can damage the cord and cause a fire.

 Install smoke and CO alarms on every level of your home, especially outside sleeping areas. Combination smoke/CO alarms are available and detect both hazards in one device. Test alarms monthly and replace batteries yearly or if you hear a chirp. Replace smoke alarms every 10 years, and CO alarms every 7–10 years (check label) even if they are still working.

 Know exactly what to do and where to go if there is a fire. Plan and practice your escape! Develop a home fire escape plan or refer to your building’s fire safety plan.

 Know your local emergency number 9-1-1

 If you smoke, do it outside and use large deep ashtrays. Don’t extinguish smoking materials in a potted plant. The soil used for potted plants can burn. Never smoke in bed.

Since opening its doors in the mid-1960s, the Cosmo Centre has been a cherished gathering place where friendships are formed, stories are shared, and local talent shines. Inside, two spacious halls — one seating up to 320 guests and a smaller hall for 100 — can be combined to host up to 420 people, making the venue ideal for everything from intimate card games to lively concerts. Two inviting meeting rooms and a brand-new yoga studio add even more ways to stay active and engaged, especially during the cooler months.

The Centre’s programming keeps the community moving, mingling, and making memories all year long. In the fall and winter, polka parties, monthly dances, and festive

Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners brighten even the chilliest days. When the weather turns warm, summertime barbecues and Canada Day celebrations — complete with live entertainment — bring the community together.

Of course, no visit to the Cosmo Centre is complete without a slice of its beloved lemon meringue pie, a treat that’s become something of a local legend. Visitors can also mark their calendars for the much-anticipated semi-annual craft fairs, lovingly organized by Anita Duncan. These vibrant events are the perfect opportunity to browse unique, handcrafted items, enjoy a sweet treat, and perhaps find the perfect gift for a friend or family member.

Membership is an open invitation to make the Cosmo Centre part of your regular routine. For just $50 a year, members enjoy access to a wide and ever-expanding selection of activities, the chance to connect with like-minded peers, and the satisfaction of being part of a lively, welcoming community. A wife was making a breakfast of fried eggs for her husband. Suddenly, her husband burst into the kitchen. ‘Careful,’ he said, ‘CAREFUL! Put in some more butter! Oh my gosh! You’re cooking too many at once. TOO MANY! Turn them! TURN THEM NOW! We need more butter. Oh my gosh! WHERE are we going to get MORE BUTTER? They’re going to STICK! Careful. CAREFUL! I said be CAREFUL! You NEVER listen to me when you’re cooking! Never! Turn them! Hurry up! Are you CRAZY? Have you LOST your mind? Don’t forget to salt them. You know you always forget to salt them. Use the salt. USE THE SALT! THE SALT!’

The wife stared at him. ‘What in the world is wrong with you? You think I don’t know how to fry a couple of eggs?’ The husband calmly replied, ‘I just wanted to show you what it feels like when I’m driving.’

The Royal Canadian Legion: A home for veterans, families, and the community

For nearly a century, the Royal Canadian Legion has been a cornerstone of life in Moose Jaw. From its origins after the First World War to its long tenure at its former High Street West location, the Legion has always been more than just a building — it has been a place of service, remembrance, and fellowship.

Now, with the move to its bright new home on Fairford Street West completed, Branch No. 59 is opening its doors wide to seniors and community members who may be asking: “Why should I reach out to the Legion, and what can it do for me?”

The new building, which opened in May 2025, was designed with accessibility in mind. Gone are the steep stairs and the dark basement lounge of the past. Today, members enjoy a bright, spacious hall filled with natural light and easy entryways. For those with mobility challenges, this change is especially important — no elevator to wait for, no obstacles to

Aaron Walker: Moose Jaw Express

climb, just a warm, open room that feels like home.

“The camaraderie is still here,” noted one veteran on opening day, adding that the Legion’s new setting makes it easier than ever for friends to gather, laugh, and share stories. For seniors looking to stay socially active, the Legion offers an inviting place to spend time.

While the morning veterans’ coffee hour is a popular tradition, the Legion’s purpose stretches far beyond companionship. As Canada’s largest veteran support and community service organization, the Legion is committed to helping those who served — but also their families, seniors, and the wider community.

For older adults, this can mean practical support in areas such as:

Access to benefits: The Legion helps seniors connect with Veterans Affairs Canada for services like hearing aids, mobility supports, and independent living assistance.

Financial help: Emergency funds are available for essentials like food, heating, or home repairs through the Poppy Fund.

Health and wellness: The Legion offers referrals for mental health support, peer support programs, and connections to senior-focused resources such as McMaster University’s Optimal Aging Portal.

Family and remembrance: The Legion assists with funeral and burial services, preserving dignity for veterans and offering comfort to families.

Importantly, these services are always free of charge, and you do not need to be a Legion member to access them.

Membership, however, is open to everyone — not just veterans. For as little as the cost of an annual membership, anyone can join and show support for those who have served. Becoming a member means being part

of a community that values remembrance, service, and connection. It also means taking part in social events, volunteer opportunities, and programs that keep the spirit of community alive.

With its 100th anniversary approaching on Oct. 16, 2026, Branch No. 59 is embracing a new chapter while honouring its past. The move to Fairford Street represents more than a change of address — it’s a renewal of the Legion’s promise to be “a happy home” for veterans, seniors, and all who walk through its doors.

For Moose Jaw’s older adults, the Legion is not just a symbol of remembrance. It’s a practical, welcoming place to find support, friendship, and purpose — today, tomorrow, and for generations to come.

You can find Branch No. 59 of the Royal Canadian Legion at 693 Fairford Street West. For more information, call 306-692-5453.

Most Canadian seniors want to remain in their own homes for as long as possible. Canadians are living longer and are increasingly reaching the age of 100. Between 2006 and 2011, the number of Canadian centenarians increased by almost 26%, the second highest increase of all age groups, after the 60 to 64 age group which increased by 29%. According to new data from the Office of the Chief Actuary, the average life span for Canadians aged 65 and above, is 87 for men and 89 for women.

Think about what you can do now to improve your life as you age, based on the experiences of people like you, who have shared their thoughts about planning and preparing for their older years.

Thinking about what you would like your life to be like in 10, 15 or 20 years, and what you might be able to do now to give you more control over future changes, will help you to maintain your health and independence for as long as possible. Having a plan to age in place could prevent you from having to make hasty decisions in the future, especially when dealing with change resulting from a crisis.

1. My health

There are laws in Canada that allow people close to you to make health care decisions on your behalf if you can’t make them yourself. In some provinces and territories you can prepare a legal document naming someone to help you make health care decisions. Check with your province or territory, or speak to a lawyer to find out about making this kind of document.

Think about your state of health as it is now. What can you do now to help ensure a healthy future?

2. My home

The majority of older adults live in the community and want to age in place in their own home. Think about the home you live in now.

Do you plan to live there when you are 70 or 80 years of age or older? Do you own or rent? If you rent, your ability to make changes to your home to support your needs may be limited. Consider what you can do to age in place as a renter or homeowner.

3. My transportation

Most older adults will live 7 to 10 years past their ability to drive safely. Think about the type(s) of transportation you use now. Do you plan to continue travelling in the same way when you are older?

4. My finances

Financial planning leads to greater well-being regardless of household income. Think about the state of your finances and your source(s) of income now. What will they be like when you are 70 or 80 years of age or older?

contribution to general wellbeing and quality of life. Volunteering helps to keep people connected with their community, is associated with longevity, and increases happiness and satisfaction in older age. Think about your social life as it is now. What will it look like when you are older?

6. My safety

Falls account for more than half of all injuries to Canadians 65 years of age and older. Approximately 20 to 30% of Canadian seniors experience one fall each year. Think about some of the things you do now to protect yourself and reduce the potential for various types of injury, harm or abuse. Might you have other safety concerns when you are older? What could you do to reduce the risk of these occurring?

7. My supports and services

As Canadians age, the care and support from family and friends

becomes increasingly important to the well-being of seniors.

In 2012, about 8.1 million individuals or 28% of Canadians aged 15 years and older, provided care to a family member or friend with a long-term health condition, disability or aging needs. That is nearly 3 in 10 people who are family caregivers.

Supports

You may already be caring for a parent, spouse, child or friend, or you may do so in the future. Think about how this role is affecting, or may affect, your life and what you might do that would help you in providing that care.

Services

At some point in your life you may need help with some activities or with some of the daily needs of living at home. This includes things such as house cleaning; delivery of prepared meals, groceries and prescriptions; snow removal; yard work; dog-walking;

W.J. Jones & Son Funeral Services

A New Way to Remember, A Tradition of Care

At W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home, we understand that saying goodbye is more than a moment—it’s a lifelong journey of remembrance. For over a century, our family has walked alongside yours, offering compassionate support, professional guidance, and respectful care through life’s most tender transitions.

As we continue to serve families in Moose Jaw and the surrounding communities with dignity and devotion, we are proud to introduce a meaningful new option for honoring your loved one’s memory: Parting Stone – A Solidified Remains Service

Beyond the Urn: A Tangible Connection Cremation is a deeply personal choice, often selected for its simplicity and flexibility. But for many families, cremated ashes can feel impersonal or difficult to display and interact with. That’s where Parting Stone comes in.

Instead of receiving ashes in a container, you now have the option to receive 40–60 smooth, solid stones - each one a clean, touchable representation of your loved one’s

and personal supports. Would you be able to manage if you could not do these activities for a short or longer period of time?

8. My community In an age-friendly community, policies, services and structures related to the physical and social environment are designed to support and enable older people to “age actively” – that is, to live in security, enjoy good health and continue to participate fully in society.

Think about the community you live in now. How close are you to a grocery store, a drugstore, a coffee shop, the library or a restaurant? How much farther do you travel to reach medical offices, a dentist or a hospital? And how far do you travel to visit family and friends? What features are important to have in your community when you are older, and will your current community meet your future needs?

essence. These stones can be held, shared, displayed, or even carried with you, creating an intimate and permanent connection unlike anything else.

Every stone is unique in shape, size, and natural color—just like the person it represents. Whether you choose to keep them all, give some to family members, or place them in a meaningful location, these solidified remains offer a beautiful, healing alternative to traditional cremation options.

Why Families Choose Parting Stone

• Clean & Touchable: No more worry about spills or scattering. Solidified remains are clean, safe, and easy to hold.

• Shareable Keepsake: Perfect for families who want to divide and share the memory of a loved one in a dignified way.

• Personal & Permanent: Stones don’t degrade, scatter, or fade over time. They offer a timeless tribute to a life well-lived.

KNOCK ON WOOD

Three sisters ages 72, 74, and 76 live in a house together. One night the 76-year-old draws a bath. She puts her foot in and pauses. She yells down the stairs “was I getting in or out of the bath?”.

The 74-year-old yells back “I don’t know. I’ll come up and see.”

She starts up the stairs and pauses. Then she yells “was I going up the stairs or down?”

The 72-year-old is sitting at the kitchen table having tea listening to her sisters. She shakes her head and says “I sure hope I never get that forgetful.”

She knocks on wood for good measure and then yells “I’ll come up and help both of you as soon as I see who’s at the door”.

Senior Activity Planning and Support Ideas for 2025 for organizations and senior facilities

Seniors play a vital role in our community, and it is essential to create opportunities for them to stay active, connected, and supported. Whether through engaging activities, practical resources, or community-building efforts, there are countless ways to make a meaningful impact in their lives. Below is a detailed guide on how you as an organization or senior facility can help and support seniors in 2025, along with actionable strategies to ensure their well-being.

1. Activity Planning and Hosting

Planning and hosting activities are great ways to keep seniors socially engaged, physically active, and mentally stimulated. Here’s how you can make a difference:

In-Person Events

• Arts and Crafts Workshops: Encourage creativity with sessions like painting, knitting, or sculpting. These activities not only stimulate the mind but also provide an opportunity for seniors to create something meaningful.

• Fitness Classes: Offer low-impact exercises like tai chi, chair yoga, or gentle stretching. These activities improve mobility, balance, and overall health while reducing the risk of falls.

• Social Gatherings: Plan events like bingo nights, movie screenings, or themed potlucks. These gatherings help combat loneliness and foster new friendships among seniors.

Virtual Gatherings

• Online Meetups: Use platforms like Zoom or Google Meet to organize virtual coffee chats, book clubs, or discussion groups. This ensures that even homebound seniors can stay connected.

• Live Streaming Classes: Provide live sessions for fitness, cooking, or art tutorials. This allows seniors to learn new skills or stay active from the comfort of their homes.

• Support Groups: Create virtual support communities where seniors can share their challenges and triumphs, fostering a sense of belonging.

Holiday and Special-Day Themes

• Seasonal Celebrations: Organize themed events like spring gardening workshops, autumn harvest festivals, or winter holiday parties.

• Milestone Celebrations: Celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, or achievements to make seniors feel valued and appreciated.

2.

Specialized Support for Seniors

Not all seniors have the same needs, and some require specialized support to ensure they can participate in activities comfortably and safely. Here’s how you can provide tailored assistance:

Support for Seniors with Dementia

• Dementia-Friendly Activities: Plan activities that reduce stress, such as listening to familiar music, gentle exercises, or engaging in reminiscence therapy with photo albums or storytelling.

• Safe Spaces: Collaborate with memory care centers or other organizations to ensure activities are designed with safety and accessibility in mind.

• Caregiver Resources: Offer caregivers practical guides, tips, and activity kits to help them provide the best support for seniors with dementia.

Health and Wellness Support

• Physical Wellness: Partner with healthcare professionals to organize health screenings, wellness workshops, or nutrition classes tailored for seniors.

• Mental Wellness: Offer mindfulness sessions, therapy groups, or guided meditation classes to reduce anxiety and promote mental health.

3. Providing Practical Resources

Access to resources is critical for empowering seniors and their caregivers. Here are some ways to support them:

Activity Kits or Packets

• Cognitive Activities: Include games like Sudoku, crossword puzzles, or memory cards to enhance mental agility.

• Arts and Crafts Supplies: Provide pre-packaged

materials for simple creative projects that seniors can enjoy at home.

• Seasonal Kits: Create themed kits for holidays or seasons, such as spring gardening sets or winter craft kits.

Community

Resource Directories

• Comprehensive Listings: Develop directories of senior-friendly centers, clubs, and programs. Include essential details like accessibility, schedules, and costs.

• Interactive Maps: Create location-based search tools to help seniors find activities near them with ease.

Caregiver Support Materials

• Guides and Checklists: Provide caregivers with resources that outline best practices for managing seniors’ health, well-being, and activities.

• Online Communities: Host virtual forums where caregivers can share advice and support each other.

4. Building Community Connections

Fostering connections between seniors and the broader community creates a supportive network. Here’s how you can build those bridges:

Local Partnerships

• With Community Centers: Collaborate to organize shared events or activities that engage seniors and other community members.

• With Local Businesses: Partner with cafes, gyms, or entertainment venues to provide discounts or special programs for seniors.

• With Nonprofits: Team up with organizations focused on senior care to expand resources and outreach.

Intergenerational Programs

• Mentorship Opportunities: Pair seniors with younger individuals for technology lessons, career coaching, or skill-sharing programs.

• Family-Friendly Events: Organize gatherings that welcome all age groups to promote inclusivity and understanding.

What is Radon?

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that forms when uranium in soil and rock breaks down. It’s colourless, odourless, and tasteless, which make it impossible to detect without specialized testing. While it’s diluted to safe levels in the open air, it can seep into buildings through:

• Cracks in foundation slabs and walls

• Gaps around pipes and wires

• Floor drains and sump pits

• Sewer backflow prevention valves

• Crawlspaces

Health Risk

Radon is a health hazard. When inhaled, the gas decays into radioactive particles that can get trapped in your lungs. These particles can damage lung tissue and increase your risk of developing lung cancer. Exposure to high levels of radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking. The risk is even greater for people who smoke and are also exposed to radon. Health Canada says that the measurement of 200 Bq’s is the “acceptable risk limit” however they also say that there is no safe level and the lower you can get it, the safer it is for anyone in the home.

Master Radon is the longest operating radon mitigation company in Saskatchewan and has installed thousands of systems. Our technicians are certified with the Canadian National Radon Proficiency Program (C-NRPP), the licensing body that formulates our standards. The staff use their training to run diagnostics and design a radon mitigation system that will be the most efficient in lowering the radon level. We’re now learning that 1 in 3 homes in Saskatchewan are high for radon gas. More specifically, in the Regina area that number jumps to 1 in 2! Test your home today!

RADON GAS CAUSES LUNG CANCER

• Lung cancer is the most common cancer in Canada

• Long-term exposure to radon is the #1 cause of lung cancer for non-smokers

• All homes have radon gas, the question is - how much?

The only way to know is to test!

Sole Alignment Reflexology: One step to balance and relaxation

Aaron Walker: Moose Jaw Express

If you’ve ever wished for a simple, soothing way to unwind and give your body a gentle boost, you might want to explore what reflexology can offer — and you won’t have to go far to find it.

For 12 years, Sole Alignment Reflexology has welcomed clients into a calm, comfortable setting, where licensed reflexologist and owner Connie Zinn works with people of all ages to help them relax, improve circulation, and encourage overall well-being.

“I was quite amazed at how it made your body relax and helped you with your sleep,” Zinn said, recalling her first experience with reflexology 15 years ago. A close friend had recommended the therapy for sleep issues, and the results inspired her to train in the practice herself.

Reflexology is a natural, non-invasive therapy that involves applying pressure to specific points in the hands, feet, or ears. “It’s good at calming your nervous system, so that’s where it’s going to help lower stress and restore circulation, which helps your body rest and repair,” she said. Additionally, the therapy offers a great way to reduce pain and restore balance to the body.

There are more than 7,000 nerve endings in each foot, each linked to different organs and systems in the body. By applying pressure to these specific points, reflexology stimulates nerve pathways, sending calming signals to the central nervous system.

Every first appointment begins with a short health form and a friendly conversation to discuss what the client hopes to address — whether that’s difficulty sleeping, stress, anxiety, or simply wanting a quiet hour of relaxation. Treatments are tailored to each individual and typically last about an hour.

While some clients come in to help with stress or sleep issues, others simply enjoy setting aside an hour for self-care. “Everybody’s reasons are different,” Zinn said. “Some want to address certain concerns, while others just want that quiet time to themselves.” She added that reflexology can be a valuable part of maintaining overall well-being, regardless of age or activity level.

For older adults, the benefits can be especially appealing. Many clients appreciate the improved circulation, reduced muscle tension, and overall sense of calm that reflexology can provide. While reflexology is not a replacement for medical care, Zinn said it can be a valuable addition to a healthy lifestyle.

She offers both foot and hand reflexology, as well as specialized techniques including lymphatic drainage and structural reflexology. The focus, she said, is always on relaxation and supporting the body’s natural ability to function at its best.

Appointments are available year-round, and Zinn suggests booking up to a month in advance to avoid any possible delays. Her practice remains open to new clients, and gift certificates are available — a thoughtful option for birthdays, holidays, or simply to treat a loved one.

Zinn continues to expand her training and is currently studying nerve reflexology, a specialized approach that targets reflex points connected to the body’s nervous system. Once certified, she plans to add this service to her offerings, further broadening the ways she can support her clients.

Whether you’re managing stress, looking for a way to unwind, or simply curious about how reflexology might benefit you, Zinn encourages people to give it a try. “You don’t need to have specific problems for reflexology,” she said. “It’s just good for everybody.”
