Dear Valued Members,
Welcome to our latest Journal. I hope you have all enjoyed a wonderful start to 2026.
It has been an exceptional beginning to the year at Sporties. We came together to celebrate Australia Day, filled the lounge for the Super Bowl on the big screens, shared plenty of laughs at another Comedy Club night, introduced a fresh new menu at Lighthorse, and welcomed families for another fantastic Family Fun Day. We also now have Guinness on tap, so next time you’re in, grab a pint and have a crack at “Splitting the G”.
While the year has already started strongly, there is so much more to look forward to.
One of our proudest achievements has been the continued growth of our Junior Membership program. I am delighted to share that we now have over 1,000 junior members as part of the Sporties family. Through this initiative, we have returned more than $50,000 directly to families with children participating in junior sport. This is something we are incredibly proud of. We firmly believe that no child should miss out on participating in sport due to financial barriers, and this $50 voucher is our way of helping to make this possible.
Our thanks go to our sporting codes who continue to encourage families to be part of the program. Together, we are strengthening grassroots sport and supporting the next generation.
Throughout March, we were proud to host the NSW BreastScreen van in our carpark. As part of Sporties’ ongoing commitment to supporting women’s health, we were pleased to offer members access to this free service in partnership with NSW Health, and hope many took the opportunity to utilise it.
The Board continues to work diligently on the Masterplan of Hammondville Park. We are working with planners, architects and construction consultants to ensure we deliver the best possible venue for Members. The future of the Club and community is at the forefront of everything we do, and I ensure you we working towards building a new venue which delivers an unparalleled member experience.
We were proud to place Bronze (third) in the Registered Clubs OOPS Mystery Shopper Program, where trained researches anonymously assess customer service, compliance, and overall atmosphere across Clubs and hospitality venues. This result reflects our strong performance, consistent service, and commitment to member experience.
Earlier this year, we were proud to award our second Bob Fleeton Scholarship to an outstanding young man, Lucas Azzopardi. In the spirit of Bob Fleeton’s legacy, defined by strength, dedication, authenticity, and service to others, we are confident this year’s recipient is someone who truly embodies those values. I encourage you to read more about Lucas’ inspiring story in this edition.
We are also pleased to announce that applications for our 2026 ClubGRANTS are now open.
In 2025, through the Liverpool City Council ClubGRANTS process, Sporties committed a record-breaking $336,810 to local community organisations and sporting groups. Supporting our community remains at the heart of everything we do. Community organisations and local charities have until Friday, 31 May 2026 to submit their applications. Further information is available on our website.
As we enter our 32nd year, I am confident that 2026 will be our best year yet. We have many exciting initiatives and events planned for our members and look forward to bringing you along on the journey.

White Cane Mingle is a recurring, inclusive program supporting people who are blind or have low vision through accessible events that build connection and confidence. It reflects the Club’s ongoing commitment to inclusion and meaningful community impact.
Our knitting group gathers at Sporties, supported with a dedicated space and materials, to create handmade items for those in need while fostering connection and wellbeing. Their ongoing generosity continues to make a meaningful impact across the community.
Moorebank Sports Club’s Junior Legends program removes financial barriers to grassroots sport, promoting inclusivity, confidence, and community connections for young people.
We are proud to announce Lucas Azzopardi as the recipient of the 2026 Bob Fleeton Scholarship!
Lucas will be supported by Moorebank Sports Club as he commences a Bachelor of Fine Arts / Bachelor of Education (Secondary), majoring in Music at UNSW.
Throughout the application and interview process, Lucas stood out as an exceptional candidate. He shared his journey with honesty and humility, speaking openly about the challenges he has faced, and the perseverance required to reach this point. His story is one of resilience, perspective, and a deep desire to give back — qualities that strongly align with the values of this scholarship.
Lucas has a longstanding connection to Moorebank Sports Club, having grown up involved in sport, with his father also contributing to the Club as a player and coach. In recent years, Lucas faced significant health challenges that changed his path and required immense strength to overcome. Throughout this period, he demonstrated remarkable determination and self-awareness, expressing pride in how far he has come both physically and emotionally.
Music became a powerful source of strength during his recovery and has since evolved into a way for Lucas to support others. Rather than seeking personal recognition, he has used his talent to give back — performing with a not-for-profit music group, supporting community initiatives, and remaining actively involved with organisations that supported him during his recovery.
Lucas has a clear and genuine aspiration to become a teacher, driven by a desire to support young people through education in the same way his own teachers supported him during difficult times. He is already acting on this commitment by mentoring students and contributing positively to his school community.
Lucas sees this scholarship not only as financial support, but as recognition of perseverance and a platform to inspire others who may be facing similar challenges. His character, resilience, humility, and commitment to community service make him a truly deserving recipient.
In the spirit of Bob Fleeton’s legacy — defined by strength, dedication, authenticity, and service to others — we are confident this scholarship has been awarded to someone who embodies those same values.

Sporties was proud to recently host the inaugural BreastScreen mobile van in our carpark, making it easier for women in our community to access this vital health service close to home.
Over the three-week visit, the response from our community was incredible. A total of 459 women were screened, with the service offering two late-night Thursday sessions and one Saturday clinic to ensure more women could attend at a time that suited them.
We would like to extend a sincere thank you to everyone in our community who participated and supported this important initiative. The strong response highlights just how valuable accessible health services are to our members and the wider community.
Due to the success of this visit, the BreastScreen mobile van has already been secured to return to Sporties in two years’ time, allowing those screened this year to conveniently return to the Sporties carpark location for their next recommended check.
Alison Hester, Community Manager at Sporties, said the initiative demonstrates the important role community clubs can play in supporting local health outcomes.

This recognition reflects a year of strong operational performance, consistent service standards, and a clear focus on delivering positive member experiences. The feedback highlighted structured processes, responsive management, and ongoing growth across both service quality and measurable results.
Most importantly, this award belongs to our people. From front-of-house to back-of-house, bar, gaming, dining, security, and support teams as this achievement is the result of teamwork, professionalism, and pride in what we do every day.

In May, Sporties will proudly support Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month, reinforcing our commitment to raising awareness and standing against domestic and family violence in our community.
Throughout the month, a range of in-club initiatives will be introduced to encourage conversation, increase awareness, and show support for those impacted. As a community-focused organisation, we are committed to promoting safety, respect, and support for all.
A key initiative will be Purple Friday being held on Friday 8 May – Clubs Say No to Domestic Violence, a statewide campaign led by ClubsNSW. As part of this, Sporties will join clubs across the state in recognising National Domestic Violence Awareness Day, encouraging staff, members, and the wider community to stand together to promote safe, respectful environments for everyone.
Purple Friday began as a grassroots movement in Ballina following a local tragedy, with a simple but powerful message: wear purple to show that violence has no place in our homes, workplaces, or communities. The movement has since grown significantly, with clubs, schools, and businesses coming together to raise awareness and support those affected.
Today, through initiatives such as ClubsNSW’s Clubs for Community – United Against Violence program, more than 25 clubs across New South Wales, Queensland, and the ACT are working collaboratively to drive education, advocacy, and meaningful change.
Sporties is proud to be part of this collective effort. By taking part, whether through conversation, participation, or simply wearing purple, we can all play a role in raising awareness and supporting those impacted. Together, we can help create safer, stronger communities.

We are also proud to advise that our Club is an official stockist of Escabags, containing essential items for victims of abuse and their children when leaving an unsafe or dangerous situation.
Every year, Sporties extends a helping hand to community organisations that provide vital services for people in our local area. In 2025, we supported five organisations with $135,910 in financial contributions through ClubGRANTS.
In addition, we provided support through in-kind donations and sponsorships for initiatives within our local community. CLICK
The Lions Recycle for Sight initiative ran throughout January, concluding on 31 January, with Sporties acting as a community collection point for prescription glasses and lenses. The response from the community was overwhelmingly positive, with a significant volume of donations received. All collected items have been sorted, cleaned, and posted to the Lions collection centre. We want to extend thanks to every person who donated.
As part of our Family Fun Day, Sporties collected donations for Supertee to help bring strength through imagination to sick kids in hospital. We are proud to say we raised close to $1,500!
The Supertee is a medical garment that inspires imagination. It provides parents and hospital staff with an easier way to change their child while accessing or bypassing medical lines. Supertee aims to bring convenience, comfort, and the wonders of imaginative play to hospitals in Australia and around the world. They want kids to be recognised as the true Super Heroes they are.
This year, we celebrated all the important women in our organisation this International Women’s Day. This years’ theme, Give to Gain, reminds us that when we give generously and support one another, we create stronger opportunities for women, and our whole community. When women thrive, we all rise. From our mums and patrons to our volunteers and dedicated staff, the women within our community play a vital role in shaping and strengthening our club every single day.

Over three weeks, 459 women were screened, with extended hours helping improve accessibility.
The strong response highlights the value of bringing health services directly to our members, and we’re pleased to confirm the van will return in two years for follow-up screenings.
In April, we will be calling on our community to donate pre-loved football boots, giving them a second life for the upcoming season. This initiative will be delivered in partnership with Rugby Rams, Moorebank Soccer Club, and ‘Kick It Forward’, helping to support young players in need.
In June, we will collaborate with the ReConnect Project to collect donated devices—including mobile phones, laptops, and iPads—which will be securely wiped and repurposed for individuals in need. Further information on how to contribute will be shared closer to the date. This initiative continues our commitment on raising awareness of domestic and family violence, where access to technology can play a critical role in support and safety.
In May, Sporties will proudly take part in Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month, supporting important efforts to raise awareness and stand against domestic and family violence in our community.
Throughout the month, we will be introducing a number of initiatives within the Club to help raise awareness, encourage conversation and show support for those impacted by domestic and family violence. As a community-focused organisation, Sporties is committed to playing our part in promoting safety, respect and support for everyone.
As part of this commitment, we will also join clubs across the state in Purple Friday – Clubs Say No to Domestic Violence, a statewide initiative led by Clubs NSW. On this day, clubs unite to show their support for National Domestic Violence Awareness Day, encouraging staff, members and the community to stand together and say no to domestic violence. Through these initiatives, Sporties hopes to help raise awareness, show support for those affected and contribute to positive change in our community.
On 21 May, we will be hosting a staff-led Biggest Morning Tea in support of the Cancer Council. This initiative will bring staff together to raise funds and awareness for cancer research, prevention, and support services, while fostering our sense of community within the workplace. Members of the public will be invited to attend.
This June, members of the Sporties team will take part in Sleeping Rough to raise vital funds for Georges River Life Care. Now in its 12th year, the event invites participants to spend one night sleeping rough in a Riverwood car park, raising awareness and support for those facing hardship in our community — including people experiencing homelessness, domestic violence and financial insecurity.
We’re proud that our team will be supporting this important initiative and helping make a difference for vulnerable families in our local area.
Sporties is proud to once again support Beanies for Brain Cancer in collaboration with our football and soccer sporting codes, helping raise awareness and funds for the Mark Hughes Foundation.
From 25–28 June, staff and patrons are encouraged to get involved and show their support for this important cause. During this period, beanies will be permitted to be worn inside the Club, and official Beanies for Brain Cancer beanies will also be available for purchase at the Club.
We encourage everyone to get behind the cause, wear a beanie, and help support the important work being done to fight brain cancer.

With trials and gradings done, our 2026 winter season preparation is being finalised, and some competitions have already begun.
It will be another year of growth at Moorebank Soccer Club with a record 99 nominated teams across all age groups. At this time of the year, the committee are very busy preparing training equipment, playing kits and arming coaches and managers with vital pre-season information. Many new faces can be seen around our club and we welcome all new players, coaches and managers to MSC.
We also thank all returning members, particularly those that have volunteered their time and energy to coaching and managing our teams. Without their efforts, teams cannot be part of any club and we wish them a fun and successful season.
Our elite teams – Premier League, Under 23s, Under 18s and Championship – kicked off their season on 1st March and are looking to back up last season’s achievements. We wish them well with their season. M-League are still yet to start their competition, but have been participating in the Jess Zaccheco Cup these last weeks to prepare for the season ahead.
To date we have 960 approved player registrations together with 186 team officials and committee registrations and we still have a way to go to get everyone approved and ready for the season. It is anticipated to be our largest membership ever.
The Sporties Junior Legends membership is proving popular with our membership with about 580 vouchers redeemed already, helping to reduce the registration cost to parents.
Football 4 All is continuing with its popularity with at least 26 players registered. The program is so important to this community and we hope to see these happy faces back on the park soon.
Moorebank Soccer Club thank Sporties for their ongoing support and look forward to working with Jeff and the team this year.

The summer cricket season concluded on Sunday, 22 March 2025, with Moorebank Cricket Club celebrating another successful year both on and off the field.
Participation
Participation levels remained strong across all grades:
Minis / Cricket Blast (U7 & U9): 4 teams, 40 players (stable year-on-year)
Juniors (U10–U16): 8 teams, 100 players (+30% growth)
Seniors (Open Age): 3 teams, down slightly on last season but still above historical averages
Three teams reached Division 1 Grand Finals: Under 9 Blue, Under 14, and 3rd Grade Seniors, with the Under 14s crowned Fairfield-Liverpool Cricket Association (FLCA) Premiers.
Under 14: Minor premiers with just one loss, securing an outstanding fourth consecutive premiership.
Under 9 Blue: Undefeated minor premiers who narrowly fell short in the Grand Final, showcasing great promise for the future.
3rd Grade Seniors: Finished fourth and produced a strong finals campaign, defeating the minor premiers in the semi-final before finishing runners-up.
Several other teams also performed strongly throughout the season. The U10 and U13 White sides were narrowly defeated in their semi-finals, while U9 White, U15, and 5th Grade Seniors all reached Division 1 semi-finals.
Across all grades, the season was highlighted by strong performances, skill development, and most importantly, players enjoying their cricket.
The Club welcomed several new committee members this season, including Katrina (Secretary), Lisa (Minis Co-ordinator), and Shekhar (General Committee Member).
Congratulations to all players, and thank you to the coaches, managers, and scorers whose efforts made the season possible.
Presentation days will be held at Moorebank Sports Club, with Mini and Junior presentations on Saturday, 23 May, and Senior presentations on Saturday, 30 May. We look forward to celebrating the season with players and their families.
