Page 1

The magical season is upon us! The lead up to Christmas is such a special time of year and there are so many lovely experiences to share together as a family.

From events like light trails and ice skating to shopping and visits to Father Christmas himself, there are lots of trips that can be planned from our feature starting on page ten. Plus, as the nights draw in, we can enjoy cosy nights at home in front of the tree lights too –a Christmas jigsaw puzzle is one of my family traditions that the children look forward to!

On pages 20 and 21 we have a roundup of fantastic shows coming up, including several pantomimes in the area and some interactive on-stage entertainment.

Wishing all our schools and families a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, from all of us at Primary Times Berkshire, and we look forward to bringing you more news and events in 2026!

Reading Family Aid launches Christmas Toys & Teens Appeal 2025

Reading Family Aid has launched its 2025 Toys and Teens Appeal, calling on the local community to help bring Christmas cheer to disadvantaged children across Reading. Recent figures from End Child Poverty reveal that more than 11,000 children in Reading –30% of the town’s young people – are living in poverty. For many, Christmas morning would pass without a single gift. Run entirely by volunteers, Reading Family Aid works to change that. Last year, thanks to the generosity of donors, the appeal delivered gifts to more than 2,000 children. The charity is once again asking for support to ensure every child has a present to open this Christmas. Supporters can help in two ways:

• Donate toys and gifts at local drop-off points (or arrange for collection).

• Give a financial donation to help purchase additional presents. Every child deserves to feel the magic of Christmas, and with your support, Reading Family Aid can make this a reality for thousands of children who might otherwise go without. Visit the website for details on how to donate or to find your nearest collection point. W: www.readingfamilyaid.org

Real experiences from Foster Carers in Wokingham

“We love ‘our foster children’ as we get to play games together and it makes them happy. I feel happy that they live here” said daughters aged 4yrs and 6yrs. Wokingham Borough Foster Carers, Amy and Will: “We like fostering because it fills our heart with so much love and joy. There are challenges, especially when you have children of your own as well. It’s trying to work out a new balance that works for you all, but the amount of love you receive from another little person in your life as a family is incredible and well worth it. It’s the best experience we’ve ever had, and we fully encourage anyone interested in fostering to find out more. We are so very grateful that we have had this experience and couldn’t imagine our life any other way.” For information on fostering with Wokingham Borough, call 0300 131 2797 or visit fostering.wokingham.gov.uk

Can you Bake a Difference?

Sammy de Laszlo looks like any other 17 year old, happily playing with his Lego or on his Xbox.

Until November 2018 he was trying to chase his brother but unable to catch him because Sammy lives with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, an incurable progressive genetic disorder that affects children, around the world.

One in 3,500 boys is born with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, with 2,500 children currently affected in the UK.

So over 10 years ago Sammy’s parents Oliver and Tricia de Laszlo launched Bake a Difference in a bid to do something and to help raise awareness and funds for medical research.

Oliver de Laszlo said “It’s amazing to think Bake a Difference has been going over 10 years! That is down to families around the UK amazing support. And our friends at Muscular Dystrophy UK.

Thank you for your continued support. This year we’re inviting families/ schools and businesses to help raise some dough by hosting bake sales for Muscular Dystrophy UK and show off their showstoppers and delicious treats. Could you be the secret ingredient to making a difference to helping people living with muscle wasting conditions? Time to put on your aprons and cook up some delicious treats.”

Visit the website to sign up and you can email your photos too… happy baking! E: bakeadifference@musculardystrophyuk.org W: www.musculardystrophyuk.org/get-involved

Make Christmas truly inclusive

Christmas can be magical, but for neurodivergent children, it can also be overwhelming. Changes in routine, sensory overload, and social expectations can lead to dysregulation. Bright lights, loud gatherings, and unpredictable schedules may trigger anxiety or meltdowns. Families can support their children by planning ahead, offering quiet spaces, and keeping familiar routines where possible. Visual schedules, noise-cancelling headphones, and gentle transitions can help. It’s okay to say no to events that feel too much. Focus on what brings joy and connection, not perfection. Every child deserves to feel safe and included, whether that means celebrating quietly at home or creating new traditions that honour their needs. A calm Christmas is just as meaningful as a busy one. Let’s make the season truly inclusive. Merry Christmas from all at Berkshire Psychology! W: www.berkshirepsychology.co.uk

A note from the Editor: I took my two children to see South Hill Park’s 2024 pantomime, and we absolutely loved it! It was everything a panto should be, with great characters, high energy singing and dancing, a fun storyline and even some water pistols for good measure! It’s a lovely theatre, we enjoyed ice cream in the interval, the show ended with the audience up and dancing and everyone left feeling elated. I’m sure this year’s performance will deliver the same.

Leighton Park’s Enquiry Week: Changemakers in Action

Inquisitive Year 7s tackled some of the world’s greatest challenges during Leighton Park School’s annual Enquiry Week. The students’ natural curiosity, supported by insightful teaching, enabled them to explore some of the big questions facing us today such as ‘how can we introduce more green spaces into our megacities?’ or ‘how can we best support our aging population?’.

Oliver Staines, Sustainability Lead and organiser for the week-long initiative, explained: “If we are asking them to be changemakers and to bring our values out into the world, they have to believe that the actions they take are going to make a difference.”

This interdisciplinary approach to learning enables students to make connections between subjects and develop skills such as teamwork, creativity and problem-solving. The success of this approach has been celebrated by the school winning the ISA’s Future Readiness Award for 2024-25. Arrange a visit to find out more. W: www.leightonpark.com

St George’s student’s winning words

Earlier this year, Windsor Writers’ Group invited students from across the Royal Borough to take part in their annual Young Writers Competition. Open to children in Year 6 and above, budding writers were requested to submit a short story or poem demonstrating their masterful use of language, grammar and spelling.

Last month, shortlisted writers were invited to attend an Award Ceremony at The Old Court in Windsor where the winners were announced and also given the opportunity to read their work aloud to the audience. Among the winners was Year 8 student, Julia (pictured), from St George’s School Windsor Castle, whose poem “My Bonnie and Me” – a heartwarming tale depicting a day at the seaside with her dog – won first place in her age category.

“I am thrilled to see Julia justly recognised for her exceptional writing,” commented Kevin Wills, Head of Senior Prep at St George’s School Windsor Castle. “I look forward to reading more of her work in the future!” W: www.stgwindsor.org
