New sports facilities coming to Queen’s Exciting plans are afoot at The Queen’s School in Chester now planning permission has been granted for a brand-new AstroTurf multi-pitch at the Senior School site. Don’t let flu spoil the December holidays Flu cases tend to increase in December and January so it’s not too late to get your child vaccinated against flu. Flu can be a very unpleasant illness in children as they suffer the same symptoms as adults including fever, chills and aching muscles and some may need to go to hospital for treatment. Serious complications of flu include a painful ear infection, acute bronchitis and pneumonia. The best way to protect your child from flu is by having them vaccinated. Many children have already been vaccinated but there are still many local children yet to take up this opportunity. For most children, the vaccine is given as a nasal spray. It is safe, quick, effective and painless. The vaccine has been used over the last eight years in schools in the UK where millions of children have been vaccinated. The flu vaccine is offered in school to all primary school and secondary school aged children. Strains of flu can vary from year to year, so even if your child was vaccinated last year it is important that they are protected for this coming season.

The nasal spray vaccine contains a highly processed form of porcine gelatine. If this is not acceptable, speak to your child’s school nurse or local Immunisation team about the alternative offer. GP practices provide the flu vaccination to all children of 2 and 3 years of age. They can also provide the flu vaccination to children with certain long term conditions such as a learning disability, diabetes, heart problems and severe asthma from 6 months of age. Vaccinating children each year not only offers protection to children, but also protects family members such as grandparents and other vulnerable groups in our community. Reducing the chances of catching flu could also mean you and your children are less likely to need time off school or work due to illness, or to care for sick family members. Britain’s greatest ever Paralympian inspires pupils 14 Gold Medal winner Dame Sarah Storey, fresh from her success in Tokyo, told a packed audience of King’s pupils: “Don’t think ‘What if I had tried harder, done that extra practice session, gone that extra mile.’ Never allow yourself to fail for want of practice and hard work.” “If you feel upset when you fail, then let that build your determination and think of failing as an opportunity to learn where to improve.”

Christmas cheer comes back to Manchester in abundance!

Manchester’s world-famous Christmas Markets are back and will be full of festive cheer from the 12th November until 22nd December. For the first time Piccadilly Gardens will be transformed into Winter Gardens (from 12th November to 3rd Jan) complete with bars, food vendors, gift stalls and even a live music stage for the whole festive period. The festivities don’t stop there – Cathedral Gardens will host Skate Manchester’s ice rink and will be packed with fun activities and entertainment for kids of all ages. Ivy Cottage Tree Farm – all you need to get your home Christmas-ready Ivy Cottage Tree Farm in Wilmslow has been growing Christmas Trees for over 40 years. Now the biggest Christmas Tree retailer in Cheshire, they sell cut spruce, fir and pine. Potted and rooted trees are also available in various sizes. You can also walk in the plantation and pick a tree that is still growing which they will cut down for you. Open every weekend (10am-3pm) and then 7 days a week from the 20th November (9am-5pm), there is also a large decoration shop with a great range on offer, and an onsite florist making wreaths. There are also model trains running around the ceiling of the shop; you can see them delivering (miniature) trees and presents! In addition, they supply firewood which can be ordered year-round. Santa is back to make wishes come true at Gordale! Gordale’s charity grotto is back, and they are delighted to have The Hospice of The Good Shepherd running it this year. The Grotto opens on Saturday 27th November through to Thursday 23rd December with 100% of the proceeds being given to the charity. J.K. ROWLING AND THE CHRISTMAS PIG
Primary Times caught up with J.K. Rowling about her newest children’s book, The Christmas Pig Her first children’s novel since Harry Poמּer, The Christmas Pig, illustrated by Jim Field, is the story of a liמּle boy called Jack, his beloved toy, Dur Pig, and the toy that replaces Dur Pig when he’s lost on Christmas Eve – the Christmas Pig. Together, Jack and the Christmas Pig embark on a magical journey to seek something lost, and to save the best friend Jack has ever known. If you had to describe the character Jack in three words, what would they be? How about the Christmas Pig? Jack is brave, loving and a liמּle lost, though he finds himself through his adventure with the Christmas Pig (CP for short), and I’d describe CP in exactly the same way. Where did you write the story? I wrote most of the
story in my writing room in the garden, but I remember mapping out the Land of the Lost while our family was on holiday. My children were playing on the beach and I was huddled beneath a sunshade, drawing maps and thinking through the logistics of the world. Did you have a treasured toy growing up? My equivalent of Dur Pig was a large, blue-eyed, pink and white teddy bear, which was bought for me by
my grandparents. I ended up calling him Henry, aﬞer one of the trains on Thomas the Tank Engine. He’s still with me, bald in places due to my habit of picking at his fur when I was very small. Do you lose things? What’s the worst thing you have ever lost? I lose things constantly. It’s one of the things that irritates me most about myself. The worst thing I ever lost was my mother’s engagement ring; it still makes me sad to think about it. Why are there no socks in the Land of the Lost? Very, very good question. There should have been at least one sock! It might be because I’m so used to losing socks. I’ve started to think they all come in mismatched pairs. Who is your favourite character/thing from the Land of the Lost and why? I think my very favourite characters, other than the two pigs, are Pretence, Compass and Hope, but I genuinely love all of them, even the nasty ones. Horrible characters are always fun to write. If you had to get stuck in The Land of the Lost, where would you choose? Though in many ways it’s quite creepy, I must admit that I love the City of the Missed, for its beauty and the oddity of some of the Things that live there. However, if I had to be stuck anywhere, I’d definitely be on the Isle of the Beloved.
