MOCO Human Trafficking Efforts Trigger a Forgotten Paris Memory Buried Deep

In covering a story on child sex trafficking this past Wednesday, it hit me more than I expected. For one thing, I don’t dream. Well,Ido,it’sjustthatthey are slow low down in my unconsciousness when I sleep that they don’t register Itakeaconcoction of medications to keep the bad war dreams down, which terrify me, and I’ve written in the past about missing crucial medications that alter my psyche fortheworse. OnSaturday morning,Iroseearlytoturn off an alarm that had gone off in my office, it was probablyaround5:45am. It’s not often that the Wisecrack Warriors (WCW) are laughed off their game, but one wiley oldKoreanWarveteranhad the wacky warriors laughingtofallingover,and one reaching for his puffer before almost passing out.

The WCW, a group associated with the Lone Star Honor Flight Veterans Group,aka105,areabunch of nutty Veterans who recently re-visited the Veterans of the Live Oak SeniorCenterinMontgomery The group is slowly working their way to other senior centers around Montgomery County, and the Veterans at the LOSC are really a cool bunch of dudes that are starting to loosen up, and let their funny bones out. We all needlaughterinourlivesto

stave off life’s pressures, and Veterans are extra special, whether having served in combat zones or not, we are all cut from the samecloth,andeveryoneis equallywelcomed.

The Wisecrack Warriors are growing with interest coming from HoustonareaVeterans,plus contacts from other states, and the WCW are eager to spread the healing with their formula of joking, laughingandcaring,ineach of their visits. The group even has a Birthday Club for Veterans to receive a little something from the WCW, on the anniversary of their days they entered thisworld. It’satestament to the Veteran (and their mothers) enduring their military service whether it was peaceful domestic or foreign service, or in combat zones with

experiencing unpleasant things that best go unsaid, no matter if you did two years of service or retired with30.

, afterwards being stationed in France working in ordinance logistics, and he loved traveling to Paris when he was off-duty For some reason the French girls always asked for his Kielbasasausage,andPaul, who was friends with a local butcher, provided the Polishfavoritetreat.

The WCW met with John ‘Jo’Kin, the jovial 96 year old Field Artillery Forward Observer who served in Korea, from 1951-1952 Everyone loves Mr Kin’s story of being born in China, then

movingtoSouthTexastobe with his father eventually becomingfluentinSpanish, and losing his Chinese instincts. Most think Mr Kin is Hispanic, and even duringhisserviceyearswas confused for American Indian or Japanese. He is still fluent in Spanish, without knowing a lick of Chinese. Jo Kin is a cool dudeandworthyofhanging outwith.

The jokester of the week for the WCW visit was Tom Cook, 96, who himselfisanaturaljokester at heart, and truly has the mind of a wisecrack. Mr Cook was an Explosive Ordinance Disposal engineer during the early part of the Korean War in 1950. He really did, like Mr Kin, experience some hard times in The Peninsula noting the harsh conditionsofwinter,where alotofsoldiersexperienced frostbite. His admiration forGeorgeC.Marshallwas most evident in noting the MarshallPlaninrebuilding Europe following WWII One topic that came up in talking with Tom was the mechanics of nature in a combatzone,withnomanmade facilities about to providesomeprivacy And with young soldiers, when workinginthefieldwithno facilities available the consequencesoflettingone buildupbecomeinevitable, perhaps from the embarrassment of exposing one's derriere to another one’s view Manyepisodeswere bandied about of number twos, some in areas that provided some cover, and

forthosewhowereindesert environments where no coverwasavailable,snakes wereaccusedofcomingout of places of privy areas. It was hilarious, because pooh,andwearenottalking about the Winnie kind, is necessary, evenin themost desperateofconditions.

“It felt like a greased cucumber,” said Mr Cook, as he described one of his first episodes as a 19 year oldkidinKorea,andhehad the whole room rolling in laughter

Everyone in the room had their own remembrances of their own excretionary events, when toilet facilities were not always there when you needed them. When you had to go, well, you had to go. Noonewaslaughingat Mr Cook, in fact, every Veteran in the room was laughing at themselves and their own memories, because everyone had the same experiences, whether it be training in field exercises, or in a combat zone. Itwastrulyawonderful afternoon that the Wisecrack Warriors had with the Live Oak Senior Center Veterans. Laughter is great medicine for sure, and for a bunch of old soldiers, we can share our experiences and still have some laughs. God Bless ‘emall.

cleaned properly, they walked the grounds and sawthemanygravesitesof the Confederate soldiers whoareburiedthere.

The battle that took place there, saw the fighting become fierce quickly

Thisbattletookplaceon December31,1862andthe officer involved with the battle from the South, was Brigadier General Nathan Bedford Forrest and the

Union officers were, ColonelsCyrusL.Dunham andJohnW Fuller General Forrests' troops become encircled by the Union forces and with Forrest being quiet savvy in his thoughts, ordered his troops to "charge both ways", they brokethrutheUnionlines, that allowed the CSA to escapeandsafelycrossthe TennesseeRiver

TheCSAwasoutnumbered from the beginning of the battle, with only 1,800troopsandtheUnion troops numbered 3,000 There were many deaths thatday,with500Confederate soldiers dying and 237 Union troops passed away Both sides claimed this battle as a victory but

the CSAdid withdraw and sufferedgreatercasualties.

TheRev.JohnParker andhiswifeRebecca,lived on the land of 1,400 acres, before there was a battle fought there. Rev Parker supported the Union at first, but turned his allegiance to the South, afterUnionsoldiersplaced cannons in his yard and refused to move them. Of the 1,400 acres, 380 acres is preserved of the actual battleground.

Montgomery and Montg o m e r y County are growing fast, and in driving Hwy 105 between Conroe and Montgomery, we take for granted that the road beneath our wheels, or at least most of it was just gravel, asphalt, or a dirt shoulder between the woods for decades and decades. 105 was authorized in 1925 by theTexas Legislature,buttheroadin Montgomery County did catch traction until the 1930s and even then it wasn’tastraightshotfrom Montgomery to Conroe Some old timers have described105asapigstail, since it would snake turning left or right along property lines even though Texas had eminent

domain built into its 1845 Constitution,butduetothe rural nature and low population, evidently it was not pursued at the time. OldHwy105W,just south of the Lake Conroe Dam is a remnant of the snaking highway, that wouldworkitswaytoFM 2854, on the way to

Town as those in Montgomery would call Conroe, since it was was the center of Montgomery County’s economy back then. If you needed a car part, fabric for a dress, or neededsomethingthatwas available, or cheaper than the two small grocery stores inMontgomery Or if you wanted to see a picture at the cinema, you had to travel the road to Conroe.

Donald Duncan recalls his older brother Clinton’s dilemmain1947,whenthe car he was driving back to Montgomery broke down. They lived near today’s Blue Heron Drive, where the water back then was just a little pond. It’s said thatClintonhadtowalkall the way back home to Montgomery,neverseeing another vehicle on the road.

Donald’sbrotherBilly Ray remembered a story from the early 1950s, wherepeopleinMontgomery who didn’t have cars, would start walking on

foot to Conroe, knowing that people would be traveling to Conroe, and with everyone knowing everyone, rides were offered and accepted, in factbothways.

On one particular Saturday afternoon, Billy Ray remembered a local craftsmanfromMontgomery Mr Jim, a local craftsman, who had an old gray Dodge pickup. Mr Jim recognized a man walking back towards Montgomery so he did as any upstanding citizen would do, and offered the manaridehome. Oncethe mangotsettledintheseat, he realized that Mr Jim was somewhat drunk. He probably had had one too many at Talley's Domino HallinConroe. Sothemansaid,"Mr Jim, do you want me to drive for you?" Mr Jim said "Man, I can drive this truck through an auger hole."

When Mr Jim approachedthenarrowtwo lane bridge at the San Jacinto Bridge, he completely missed the narrow two lane bridge, and went down the embankment, andflippedthetruckonits side near the water line. Mr JimsmokedaSherlock Holmes type and always

Hwy 105 was eventually straightened out, with the dam forming the lake being finished in the early 1970s, and along with the development, it started to put congestion pressuresonthearea.
