Prices in Texas are 10.6 cents per gallon lower than a month ago and stand 33.0 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has decreased 2.3 cents compared to a week ago and stands at $3.475 per gallon. According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Texas was priced at $1.92/g yesterday while the most expensive was $3.95/g, a difference of $2.03/g. The lowest price in the state yesterday was $1.92/g while the highest was $3.95/g, a difference of $2.03/g. The national average price of gasoline has fallen 0.8 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $2.73/g today. The national average is down 17.0 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands 28.9 cents per gallon lower than a year ago, according to GasBuddy data compiled from more than 11 million weekly price reports covering over 150,000 gas stations across the country. While the situation in Venezuela has dominated headlines, it’s far too early for any measurable impact on what consumers are paying at the pump— whether prices go up or down— as it would likely take years to see a meaningful increase in oil output there. Joint Operation R e c o v e r s Te n S t o l e n Vehicles, MCSO Seeks Public’s Assistance in Locating Suspect On January 8, 2026, a multi-agency operation led by the Montgomery County Auto Theft Task Force (ATTF) and the Te x a s D e p a r t m e n t o f Public Safety (TXDPS) Criminal Investigations Division resulted in the recovery of ten stolen vehicles. Authorities are now seeking the public’s help in locating the suspect, Justin Bowman. The investigation b e g a n w h e n AT T F Detectives and TXDPS Agents tracked Bowman, who had an outstanding felony warrant for Unauthorized Use of a M o t o r Ve h i c l e i n Montgomery County, to a specific location. During surveillance, agents observed the suspect preparing to leave the premises. As ATTF Detectives and Deputies from the Harris County Pct. 4 C o n s t a b l e ’s O ff i c e attempted to intercept the suspect, Bowman fled the location in a truck towing a trailer containing an additional vehicle. This initiated a vehicle pursuit led by Pct. 4 Constables. The pursuit concluded when the suspect abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. Despite an extensive search, the suspect remains at large. Upon securing the scene, investigators confirmed that the truck driven by the suspect had been reported stolen out of Harris County three days prior. Further inspection revealed that both the trailer and the vehicle it was carrying were also stolen. A subsequent investigation led to the

However, the Houston Texans rose to the occasion despite the lackluster performance from Texans' quarterback C.J. Stroud to win their first playoff road game in franchise history beating the Steelers 30-6 and advancing to the AFC Divisional game against the New England Patriots this Sunday. It was an off day for C.J. Stroud as he seemed off center with five (5) fumbles and an interception, yet he went for twenty-one (21) completion on thirty-two (32) attempts for two hundred and fifty (250) yards with a touchdown. The citizen commentary was united in defense of the old building, and the sentiment spread to the council and committee dais and tables. At the December 9th council meeting, citizens expressed concerns that the community center was destined to be razed to the ground following the November 18th Montgomery Economic Development Corporation meeting, but council had yet to speak its piece, and the issue was immediately tabled at the suggestion of Councilwoman Cheryl Fox to allow for a cooling off period. The Public Forum continued the call in favor to save the community c e n t e r, w i t h c i t i z e n s recalling treasured memories or the historical significance the building has played in their lives. Others noted the trail ride dances, or its use as a site where Christmas events in Historic Montgomery take place, such as the Cookie Walk, or other community events throughout the year such as bingo and civic meetings. “I can say that one of the reasons that I made the decision to purchase property in downtown

City Administrator Brent Walker addressed various issues associated with the community building, from its closure to community groups, the smells from the sewer problems, and the general condition of the place. He described the impetus to the initial MEDC meeting in November, when a lady who rented the building in August made a statement

He noted C o u n c i l m a n To m Czulewicz’s (who passed away over the Christmas holiday) had earlier brought up the smells there, coupled alongside other issues. “Things got deeper and a little deeper with more issues,” said Walker in reference to the community building. “We see there's some movement in the walls, and roof structure issues, so that’s when we brought it to the attention of the MEDC.” Walker suggested that the issue with the community building be tied in with the Montgomery ‘Downtown Improvement Project,’ or McGowan project, that is designed to improve water and sewer in the downtown area. The building has been shut to potential renters due to the concerns raised, but citizens have expressed interest in renting the space, which sparked a passionate appeal by Councilman Stan Donaldson. “We're going to fix it where it's usable and people enjoy it,” said the councilman. “We have made a lot of people mad by closing the building down.” Mayor Countryman a s k e d t h e C i t y Administrator why can’t the community building be opened until the facility is remediated, to which Walker yielded to City Attorney Alan P. Petrov, who responded that additional language regarding waivers could be

added to rental agreements provided that citizens understand the risks of the current building condition. Montgomery Planning and Zoning Commission member Merriam Walker argued for a certain course of action, and the Mayor, Council, and members of the committees encouraged community involvement. No decisions were made during the Workshop Meeting on the community c e n t e r, a n d w i l l b e addressed at the January 13th Council Meeting, after MCN’s press time for its January 14th edition. Where should you retire?

By Kent Pendleton, AAMS, Pendle Hill Advisors, LLC Retirement & Longevity Hint: It's about more than the weather and scenery. Dreaming of a sunny retirement? Or one with a mountain view? Where you retire depends on more than the weather and the scenery. Different states have different tax considerations – and taxes can have a major effect on the quality of your retirement. Among other financial factors, local taxes should be considered as you decide where you'll spend

the next chapter of your life. Tax considerations One way to cut your tax bill is by moving to a state that doesn't have an income tax. There are seven U.S. states that do not have an income tax: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas and Wyoming. Washington state taxes investment income and capital gains, but only for certain high earners, and New Hampshire taxes investment and interest income but is phasing out those taxes. Keep in mind that wherever state taxes are lower or absent, statefunded programs may be similarly lacking. If you expect you may one day depend on certain government-supported services, you may find a state with higher taxes a smarter move in the long term. Avoiding destinations with a state income tax isn't a surefire way to minimize

your tax burden. WalletHub conducts an annual analysis of the total tax burden by state, measuring the proportion of total personal income that residents pay toward state and local taxes – including state income taxes, property taxes and sales and excise taxes. There are a few additional states on WalletHub's list that keep their tax burden low, even while taxing residents' income. According to WalletHub, the 10 states with the lowest overall tax burden, lowest to highest, are Alaska, Delaware, New Hampshire, Tennessee, Florida, Wyoming, South Dakota, Montana, Missouri and Oklahoma. Other financial factors A lower tax bill shouldn't be the only consideration when it comes to location-specific expenses in retirement. The biggest expense in retirement is housing cost, which

fluctuates drastically by location. Even if you've paid off your mortgage, other homeowners' expenses like property taxes, insurance, maintenance and repair costs are higher in some regions and cities than others. Moving where housing costs are low – even if taxes are high – can help your overall budget significantly. If you plan on working in retirement, you'll want to take note of the second-act career opportunities in some areas. (Of course, with remote working becoming widely available, job location is not as important as it used to be.) Also important is the accessibility of quality a ff o r d a b l e h e a l t h c a r e where you plan to retire – healthcare ranks third on the list of biggest expenses in retirement and may be

In order to determine the best meals for feline friends, owners must be able to distinguish and select between numerous food options — a choice that is best made by knowing their specific cat’s needs and preferences. D e b Z o r a n , a professor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, provides guidance to cat owners on choosing the most nutritious food to support their cat’s health and well-being. The wet vs. dry debate When considering whether to feed your cat wet or dry food, owners should understand the benefits of both options. “The differences are primarily physical — texture, moisture, and how they are processed,” Zoran said. “Wet is cooked, while dry is extruded, made into pellets, and then cooked. Wet food is about 75-80% water, and dry is less than 5% water, unless it’s a ‘soft moist’ product.” In addition to its crunchbased texture, dry foods tend to have higher fiber and other carbohydrates, and while canned foods can vary widely, they can have a higher protein content. Because the majority of a cat’s daily hydration needs are typically met with their diet, according to

Zoran, wet food goes a long way in ensuring adequate water intake, which is especially important in the prevention of constipation and maintaining a good urine output. However, many people prefer to feed both, and with proper feeding approaches cats can benefit from diets that contain both dry and wet foods. Because dry foods contain little water, they are more calorie dense than wet foods, so if dry foods are fed, portion control is essential to prevent overfeeding and weight gain. “Most adult cats only need about 200 calories a day, and if you are feeding both canned and dry food you have to account for both,” Zoran said. “A good rule of thumb is that if you are feeding a volume of food that is larger than the c a t ’s h e a d , y o u a r e overfeeding.” Because of the importance of portion control, Zoran advises against the use of demand-feeder methods — in which the cat triggers a dispenser — and free feeding. “Indoor spayed and neutered cats are particularly prone to weight gain because they get less exercise, less stimulation, more food, and more calorie-dense food,” Zoran said. “So, it’s really crucial to control their intake.” Selecting a brand

Mike Holley spoke to “How Conservative Principles Inform Prosecution”. A fan of Author C. S. Lewis and Thomas Sowell he detailed the conservative approach to how Montgomery County prosecutions are handled. Quoting Sowell he said “If You Care About People, You Tell Them The Truth. If You Care About Yourself, You Tell People What They Want To Hear”. Mr. Holley leads an office of approximately 130 prosecutors, investigators, and professional staff dedicated to public safety, justice, and the rule of law. A career prosecutor and former U.S. Army officer, he brings more than 25 years of experience in the courtroom and in organizational leadership across military, private, and state practice. District Attorney Mike Holley served thirteen years on active duty in the United States Army. He began his military career as a Military Police Platoon Leader with the 1st Cavalry Division and later served as a Judge Advocate. His assignments included Trial Counsel, Senior Defense Counsel, Professor of Criminal Law at The Judge Advocate General's Legal Center and School, and Chief Prosecutor for the Abu Ghraib detainee-abuse cases in Baghdad, Iraq. He

concluded his active-duty service with the rank of Major. Holley practiced complex civil litigation at The Lanier Law Firm before returning to public service as a Texas prosecutor. He has served as a felony prosecutor, Chief of the Misdemeanor Division, and First Assistant District Attorney. He also helped establish the Montgomery County Veterans Treatment Court and remains actively involved in veteranfocused programming. He is Board Certified in Criminal Law and holds a Master of Laws (LL.M.) from The Judge Advocate General's Legal Center and School, a Juris Doctor from Texas Tech University School of Law where he graduated summa cum laude, and was inducted into the Order of the Coif, and received the Fortney Award for Ethics and the Judge Meade F. Griffin Aw a r d — a n d h o l d s a Bachelor of Science from Abilene Christian University, summa cum laude. Mike's address to the group, including the elected official Montgomery County Republican Precinct Chairs did not fall on deaf ears. He was addressing the group that has expressed serious concerns about the a l l e g a t i o n s t h a t M r. Metcalf is actually a Democrat that has been

running as a Republican in M o n t g o m e r y, C o u n t y Te x a s f o r y e a r s . M r. Metcalf has been accused of misleading 5 different Montgomery County Republican women's groups for years with conservative speeches while going to Austin and promoting the Democrats agenda. “If You Care About Yourself, You Tell People What They Want To Hear” has worked well for Mr. Metcalf. One such group, the “North Shore R e p u b l i c a n Wo m e n ” , group has been hijacked by Wi l l M e t c a l f a n d h i s propaganda. They are known for providing money and support, defending Mr. Metcalf and his voting record, which includes him voting to give California $1.5 BILLION DOLLARS of Texas tax payer money for the California movie industry under SB 22 which he voted for. Now The North Shore Republican Women, who ironically was meeting in Bentwater at another location while the Montgomery County Republican Voters were meeting, appears to be a biased mouthpiece for Will Metcalf, including staff from his own office known for regular attendance. The “North Shore Republican Women” organization has morphed into the biased organization it is today.

Led by a California transplant, it is rapidly becoming known for its bias and failure to promote all conservative Christian candidates with real Republican conservative values. Suppression of free speech and being part of the “California Cancel Culture” is nothing new for this organization. Initially founded to promote an unbiased platform for all genuine conservative voices of Republican Candidates to be heard, the women have lost there way and lean toward a few select candidates most of whom promote propaganda from Will Metcalf and his staff. Debates are a joke. They don't have them. After a riveting speech from Mr. Holley and a lively meeting thereafter, the Conservative Christian Women and Men's voices that the North Shore Wo m e n ' s G r o u p a l s o known as a “Mouthpiece for Metcalf” were finally heard. Growing in numbers the “Montgomery County Republican Voters” are looking forward to their next meeting. Contrary to the message of courage and engaging in open dialog, and free debate that Turning Point USA President Charlie Kirk died for, this organization openly and hypocritically claims to “Promote Republican Party candidates by keeping members i n f o r m e d o f a l l c a mpaigns”. Not true! Haven't heard a word about Jon Bouche's campaign activities. Jon Bouche a “Real Republican”, is running in the Republican Primary of Montgomery County for the Texas State Representative seat in House District 16 against Will Metcalf also known as “Slick Willie”. Over the years this organization, also referred to as the “Mouthpiece for Metcalf” is alleged to have sent thousands of Dollars to “Slick Willie's” campaign, who in turn like a good Democrat, has empowered himself by selling out his own constituents in exchange for Democrat votes just like his good friend Dustin Burrows, and Dade Phelan. Willie was caught on camera patting his friend Dustin on the back with an “Atta Boy”, who like Willie, is known

for lying to his own constituents when he pledged not to defect from the Republicans in order to propel power upon himself as Speaker of the House, but instead did the opposite and defected to the Democrats. What a guy! Just like a good Democrat, the North Shore R e p u b l i c a n Wo m a n Sorority alleged to be meeting in Bentwater engage in suppressing free speech, and fear open debate. This organization is not worthy to use Charile Kirk's good name. What hypocrites! The Northshore group said that Annie Kate (precinct chair) is on record supporting Mr Metcalf who was censured by the majority of all elected voting Montgomery County Republican Precinct Chairs, and instead of allowing questions from any members of their organization wanting to know the truth, is on record saying if you want to know “Just Give Me A Call”. The fear of honest open debate and suppressing free speech has become the rule of the day for this left wing Democrat oriented group o f m o s t l y, n o t a l l , “RINO's”, “Republicans In Name Only”. Then, after seeing the names of those who voted to censure Mr. Metcalf were on the reservation list to attend, were all canceled. Canceled! This is a prime example of Willie's Democrats “Cancel Culture”. Genuine conservative “Practicing Republicans” are all too familiar with it. It's what Charlie Kirk fought against and died for. OPINION “THE METCALF MUSE” Will Metcalf's campaign slogan is “LET'S MAKE LYING WRONG AGAIN”, but is it true? Most people would agree that lying has always been wrong. Perhaps in Mr. Metcalf's case a better slogan would be “Let's M a k e Ly i n g S t r o n g Again”. According to Brandon Walten (Senior E d i t o r o f t h e Te x a s Scorecard) on December 4, 2024 in an email Metcalf wrote to a constituent he stated that “As a staunch Conservative Republican, I will stand by whoever is chosen at our caucus meeting later this year as our party's endorsed candidate to serve as Speaker this upcoming January.” However, that is not what Mr. Metcalf did, instead he broke his pledge to his Republican Party, and to his own constituents and joined with the Democrats to vote for their choice for Speaker in January, not the Republican Caucus's choice for Speaker. The factual truth is that Governor Abbott's office sent fliers to residents all over Montgomery County Dist. 16 pleading for Metcalf to honor his pledge when he promised his own voting constituents that he would remain loyal to the Republican party, but, instead Metcalf ignored it, defected from the Republican party and voted with his Democrat friends.

Arnold Metcalf along with his defecting buddies, Dade Phelan and Dustin Burrows, led the charge to turn the Texas House of Representatives over to the Democrat Party. It resulted in Democrats taking control of all of the Vice Chairmanship seats on every one of the House Committees, and included adding Democrats to 10 of the 12 permanent subcommittees. They increased the Democrats budget allowing for the door to be open for Democrats to receive millions of dollars from Tax Payer money. However, that wasn't enough for Mr. Metcalf and his fellow defectors. Remaining loyal to their promise to the Democrats, all Republican State Representatives from all over the State of Texas were prohibited from being able to serve on any c o m m i t t e e a s a Vi c e C h a i r m a n o r C h a i rwoman!

COMMUNITY MCN’s ‘Veteran of the Week’ Nick Tran This week’s Veteran is Nick Tran, who served in the U.S. Army from 19881991 and 2003-2013. Nick was born in Vietnam, and was five years old when he left during the Fall of Saigon under fire from the North Vietnamese. His father was a South Vietnamese officer, and before being picked up by an US Navy Destroyer from the 7th Fleet on his third day without water, while others in the boat died. Nick’s Mother and others in his family were arrested by the North Vietnamese, and sent to a

re-education camp. He never saw her again. Nick knows about Communism, and he loves the United States, his adopted country. After graduating high school in 1988, Tran joined the US Army serving in the Field Artillery, and served in Iraq during Operation Desert Storm in 1991. After his first term of service he went to college, and following his reenlistment in 2003 he returned to Field Artillery, then switched to being an Army Combat Medic. Tran then won a place with the Army Special Forces.

He went on to deploy to Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. Following his military service, Tran worked for Schlumberger building programs to help veterans get off the streets, helping them heal and get the help they needed, getting them jobs within the oil field s e r v i c e s i n d u s t r y. Currently, Nick is running in the Republican Primary for the 8th Congressional District. Good Luck Nick, and Congratulations on being MCNs ‘Veteran of the Week’.

The oldest grave at Oak Wood Cemetery dates back to 1869 and on December 13, 2025, some 253 wreaths were placed at the grave site of all veterans from all the wars. It is a beautiful site to see those brillant, vivid evergreen wreaths with a red bow, placed all over the cemetery.
