Bill Jones talked about his dad, James T Jones and his passion for the SCV and his work concerning the Plaza and Memorial Statue. His dad wasalongtimememberof the Grimes County Greys Camp924. Hethenplayed two selections on the bagpipes,whichwere...The Bonnie Blue Flag and Dixie. Bill Westmoreland gave a narrative about the creation of the Plaza and

Statue and is also a long time member of Camp 924 inAnderson. Lasttospeak about the event was Eva Rains, as she had attended the dedication in 2001, she gave her memories of that day

To close out the event, Steve Sodich from the 4thTexas Field Battery 2358 Tomball gave the benediction. This week’s veteran of theweekisDwane(D.D.) Shirley who served in the U.S. Army from October 1969 thru July 1973 as a combat Cobra pilot in Vietnam Originally growing up in DeRidder La. In his early years, his family moved from there to Bon Weir, Texas where his father opened a gas station. Interestingly, one of the customers was Ernest Tubb, a country western singer DD’s father, while stationed in the Philippines, had seen Ernest during one of the USO shows during World War II. When DD was stationedatDaNangAFB inVietnam-whoshowsup for a USO show, none other than Ernest Tubb! After graduating from Klein High School, DD gotmarriedandsoonhada familyontheway Having good grades in HS, he approached the Army recruitersandtheyaskedif hehadaninterestinflying helicopters. He did and took all of the requisite teststoqualify Hepassed them all, but flying was going to be contingent upon him making it throughbasictrainingatFt Polk,LA.DDdidwelland madeitthroughbasicwith no problems, but in the interim, the Army lost all of his military and testing records. Finally DD was off to warrant officer training at Ft Wolters, Texas.
