Alone Together, written by composer-in-residence John Wineglass, was jointly commissioned with the Fresno Philharmonic, Pacific Symphony and San José Chamber Orchestra.
Shostakovich wrote his cello concerto for Mstislav Rostropovich, who took four days to learn and memorize the piece before the premiere.

Mendelssohn composed two violin concertos: the E Minor, which he wrote at the end of his life, and the D minor, which he wrote when he was 12. Brahms wrote his second Symphony over a summer holiday, but it took him 21 years to write his first Symphony.

Rachmaninoff composed his second symphony while serving as Conductor of the Imperial Opera at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow.
