Their on-site restaurant, Terry’s Restaurant + Lounge, has long been famous for catering to dogs just as carefully as they do their humans. Shade is provided if needed, as are fresh bowls of water and a “canine delights” menu that includes a Nathan’s Hotdog.

They’ll enjoy the wind in their fur as you cruise along the quaint streets of Carmel-by-theSea, or on a longer journey around Pebble Beach’s 17 Mile Drive. For a glass of wine later in the day (or any time of day!) De Tierra Vineyards on Mission Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues is extremely dog friendly, allowing canine companions both outside on the patio or inside their spacious tasting room.

Several restaurants welcome dining dogs. Grabbing a Mediterranean-inspired meal or refreshment at Treehouse Café on San Carlos Street actually feels like you’re sitting amongst birds and branches. It’s also one of the best places to dine with your dog; a perfect place for them to sit with their humans and enjoy the sunshine and ocean breeze. Carmel’s Hidden Gem Restaurant is truly just that—an unassuming spot tucked away on Mission Street and Fifth Avenue, serving an exceptional breakfast and also, your pups. As you eat your Swedish Pancakes on the patio, your pal will be as cozy as can be in one of the restaurant-provided dog beds. No dog-centered visit to Carmel would be complete without popping in to Diggidy Dog—A Dog & Cat Boutique. A landmark in town for two decades, Diggidy Dog, on the corner of Ocean Avenue and Monte Verde Street, is filled to the brim with everything you want or need to treat your animals. The well-supplied store has a wide selection of natural snacks like biscuits, jerky, freeze-dried meats, and even cupcakes made with canine-friendly ingredients. They also have basic goods you may have forgotten at home like kibble or soft food. What really differentiates Diggidy Dog from being just another pet store is their selection of luxury clothing, bedazzled accessories, cloud-like bedding and unique toys sourced from women, minority and veteran owned small businesses. COMMUNIT Y EVENTS Being such a dog-friendly location has led to many dog fanatics basing their breed-specific meetups right here on the white sands of Carmel Beach and on the quaint streets of downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea. The Poodle Parade, otherwise known as Poodle Day, is a once-a-year event in early October that celebrates the brilliant breed and their unique physical traits—showcasing Poodles of all sizes—and hairstyles. The parade features a bagpiper who plays as the dogs march together through the Crossroads Carmel shopping center. Afterward, poodle parents can gather together for afternoon activities and evening parties at various cafés and wine bars. Proceeds from the festivities benefit the NorCal Poodle Rescue. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Beach Party is another annual pup meetup in mid-April celebrating one of the most lovable types of dogs. “They love to meet people and they’re fabulous with children and old people,” says local and Carmel Realty Agent Vicki Mitchell, who currently has three. “You can’t just have one Cavalier. Once you’ve had one Cavalier, you have to get another one!” This reunion, held at Carmel Beach, started as a small, casual meetup but quickly grew into a crowd-pulling function. Hundreds of King Charles Spaniels and their humans now assemble to frolic in each other’s company.

BassetCon is another convention held on a yearly basis in honor of the beloved floppy-eared, low-slung breed, the Basset Hound. Basset owners come from far and wide half-way through July to bring their funny fur babies to Carmel, a place where they’ll undoubtedly receive plenty of pets and the special attention they deserve. And if you fi nd yourself on Carmel Beach surrounded by dozens of smushedfaced beauties on the last Sunday of the month, there’s a good chance you’re in the middle of The Carmel Pug Meetup. The pug meetup is put on monthly by Bay Area-based Tiny Paws Pug Rescue and held at the beach where one of the most charismatic breeds can run freely in their curly-tailed glory.

Having dog-friendly businesses and events so readily at our fingertips is a huge part of the charm on which our little town is built. We’ve got the commerce, the architecture, and the location, but it’s the community of people—and their four-legged family members that participate in these activities—that really give Carmel its heart.

The Golden State Theater is celebrating 100 years in Monterey, and can sometimes seem too good to be true: Its ideal location on Alvarado Street attracts a lineup of big names for not-so-big-bucks. While the Art Deco theater attracts heavy hitters and comedians to perform in the intimate setting, it gives attendees the feeling of being right in the front row. Recently, the theater featured bands such as Ambrosia, Jefferson Starship, and Cheap Trick. Some of the performers in store for 2026 are George Lopez on July 18, a collaboration between Los Lobos and Los Lonely Boys on August 8, and Ingrid Michaelson on October 17. The legendary Monterey Jazz Festival has brought smooth and soothing rhythms to the Peninsula every year since 1958, making it the longest-running festival of its kind in the world. This year’s fest will take place from September 25-27 and will include jazz icons—The Herbie Hancock and Ron Carter duo (honoring Miles Davis,) the Charles Lloyd Quartet, and vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant. And though many veterans of the genre will be present, the festival is a place

for newcomers to shine in the spotlight—regional and national student ensembles are invited to perform amongst the greats every year. As the festival website states, “Monterey Jazz is committed to nurturing the next generation of jazz.” The Sunset Center in downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea is another conveniently located venue. Appropriately named, the performing arts hub is considered to be the center of the town’s recreation to many, and hosts musical artists, comedians, interviews with household names, and film screenings. The annual Carmel Bach Festival is held at the Sunset Center every July over a two-week span, and features world-class classical musicians paying homage to one of history’s greatest composers. This year’s upcoming Bach Fest will mark its 89th year in Carmel and will be held from July 11-25. September will bring electric instrumentals with Grammy-nominated blues rock guitarist Kenny Wayne Shepherd making his way onto the stage of the Center to celebrate the 30th anniversary of his album Ledbetter Heights. The California Roots Music & Art Festival, widely known as “Cali Roots,” seamlessly blends reggae, rock, folk, and hip-hop together over a three-day period at the historic Monterey Fairgrounds since 2010. Notable acts this past May included Ice Cube, The Expendables, and J Boog. While there’s an endless number of performances every year, musical acts aren’t the only thing for amusement at Cali Roots— you can also participate in yoga classes and support artists by taking home paintings, apparel and handcrafted jewelry. The Cali Roots website states that they’re “not just a music festival, it’s a multi-layered experience.” The West End Celebration is a free event where artists, musicians, locals and visitors have come together in the heart of Sand City for the last two decades. The family friendly party hosts more than 25 musical acts across various genres, but the crafty elements are just as important to the soul of the celebration. During this year’s celebration on August 22-23, vendors will sell hand painted pottery and jade necklaces, and even apply

tooth gems! Local establishments like Other Brother Beer will gear up to provide refreshments for adult West End goers. The Carmel Valley Fiesta is a free annual gathering at the Carmel Valley Community Park that reflects the jovial energy of Carmel Valley and its people. Hosted by the Kiwanis Club of Carmel Valley, an organization that strives to consistently improve the lives of children through service projects, the Fiesta is held the first weekend in August and is truly everything a fiesta should be: a vibrant celebration of community. The weekend entails a classic car show, a raffle grand prize drawing, and a horseshoe tournament, train rides for littles, and more. The quaint city of Pacific Grove holds the Good Old Days Street Festival every May, and this year marked the 67th year of the tradition. The famous weekend-long function consists of live music by more than 50 performers, artisanal goods sold by local vendors, and fun food and beverage options. The festival is for all ages to enjoy, with a wine and beer garden for

adults to relax in or a petting zoo and carnival rides to excite the little ones. There’s also several coinciding philanthropic events such as the Kids Firefighter Challenge, the Kiwanis Club of Pacific Grove Pancake Breakfast, and the Good Old Days Parade. The California Rodeo Salinas is the state’s largest and most well-known rodeo, and for good reason. This year’s three-day affair was held on July 16-19, but pre-rodeo festivities began on July 9 and include a carnival, the Kiddie Kapers Parade, a Monster Truck Throwdown, and much more. Miranda Lambert and Dylan Scott took the stage for the Big Week Kickoff Concert at the Salinas Sports Complex on July 11. With events inspired by—and for—all walks of life, one can find just what they’re looking for in the Monterey Bay area no matter their age, schedule, or taste. Come for the scenery and stay for a show (or two or three) and enjoy all that the Peninsula has to offer.

C A R M E L VA L L E Y Sun-seekers, hikers, and wine enthusiasts will also point you east to Carmel Valley, down the eponymous road into a sprawling basin shaped by lush hillsides and deep vistas into the Santa Lucia range. About seven miles inland, Ioli’s in the Mid-Valley Shopping Center is known for large pies and big flavors, including the Bronx Combo that boasts roasted veggies with pepperoni and sausage. Carmel Valley Village lies only a few more miles along the scenic roadway, noted for its small-town charm, numerous wine tasting rooms and dining spots that make the most of the inland sun. Corkscrew Cafe offers guests quintessential valley dining in a quaint country home setting, alongside al fresco tables in a shady garden area.

MONTEREY With all the restaurant options throughout the peninsula, Downtown Monterey doesn’t always get the same buzz as its neighbors. But among the historic adobes and seaside sites marking California’s earliest capital town, there are sneaky-good options from award-winning breweries and fast-casual faves to upscale seacoast dining and pizza joints for every taste. Closer to Cannery Row, Gianni’s Pizza offers scenes of the classic Italian restaurant, complete with red-and-whitecheckered tablecloths, vintage posters of the Sicilian coast, and pizzas that can feed the whole neighborhood. Point Lobos State Natural Reserve

B i g S u r, C a r m e l & C a r m e l Va l l e y Winding your way south along Highway 1 toward Big Sur is an experience in itself. Less than a 10-minute drive from Carmel-by-the-Sea, Point Lobos State Natural Reserve offers casual walking trails alongside a surreal blend of steep ocean cliffs, lush meadows and cypress forest. All these habitats host thriving plant, bird and mammal species including giant kelp, pelicans and sea otters. As you continue down the coast, the horizon explodes into Pacific blue. Keeping your eyes on the road is the hardest (and most important) part as everything becomes more extreme–the breathtaking beauty, looming precipices or sharp switchbacks where only a few cows might notice your passing. Garrapata State Park is the perfect stopping point, giving explorers the option to go by land or sea. Enjoy coastal trails leading to a cliffside beach (that allow leashed dogs!), or challenge yourself on the Soberanes Canyon Trail that winds through wildflower-laced valleys and redwood canyons up to Whale Peak. You’d never guess what you might see there. With the rugged granite of the Santa Lucia Mountains shadowing the east, seaside cliffs up to 400 feet high give the famous Bixby Bridge incredible perspective, with several miles of scenery straight out of a fantasy novel. As you get closer to Big Sur Village and beyond, your elevation drops gradually into groves of Santa Lucia firs and giant coastal redwoods. There may be no place on earth like Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, where the Big Sur River feeds into carved canyons. The legendary camping site features an array of hiking trails, swimming spots and forest paths that lead to the Big Sur River Gorge and Pfeiffer Falls. The journey to Big Sur and the time to enjoy its natural wonders likely require a full day trip, but it’s worth every second. Heading back inland, sunny Carmel Valley lies about 15 minutes east of Carmel-by-the-Sea and offers its own beautiful experiences alongside vineyards, delicious food sourced from the area, and outdoor recreation for everyone. Garland Ranch Regional Park is a favorite for visitors and locals alike, offering more than 60 miles of trails for hikers, horseback riders and birders. With elevations ranging from 200 to 3,000 feet, visitors can jog along the Carmel River, hike up to a local pond and seasonal waterfall, or challenge themselves to the top of Snively’s Ridge. The expansive and dog-friendly park is the perfect last stop before visiting any of the several wineries in nearby Carmel Valley Village. Continued on Next Page

Along sand-swept boardwalks cutting through protected sand dunes, the Spanish Bay Shoreline Trail is truly remarkable right around sunset when the resident bagpiper can be heard tipping his cap to another day in this Pacific paradise.

Fort Ord Dunes State Park

The Asilomar Coastal Trail picks up in Pacific Grove, dotted by tidepools rife with urchins and sea stars, and crossing by Point Pinos Lighthouse, the oldest continuous operational lighthouse on the entire west coast.

Home to the former U.S. Army training base, Fort Ord Dunes State Park features four miles of Pacific beach along terrain looking like something out of a sci-fi feature. The easygoing, dog-friendly boardwalk through the park makes this a sleeper sunset spot, only a few minutes away from the growing Marina and East Garrison communities.

Nearby Lover’s Point begins another popular exercise and biking path, the Monterey Bay Coastal Trail, which crescents 18 miles north amongst bustling squid boats, barking seals, and selfie-snapping tourists.

There’s no place for fall activities on the Peninsula like the incredible Earthbound Farm Stand at 7250 Carmel Valley Road. The stand, (almost like a little village) which consists of an organic market and café, farm, and colorful gardens, is considered the locals’ best kept secret and is a staple in almost every local family’s weekly schedule. And during those autumnal months, it’s especially magical. Certified organic pumpkins of every shape, size and color are piled as high as trees for visitors to pick out their own perfect one to take home. Their Fall Festival shares lively activities like corn husk doll making workshops, pumpkin carving demos, and music performances. Another location for a plethora of pumpkins and family fun is The Farm in Salinas. The name is simple, but the choices are ample. The Farm is famous for its fresh-baked sweet or savory pies and other buttery baked goods, bountiful artisan gift shop and produce stand. But beginning in September, The Farm’s delightful atmosphere is elevated even more with pony rides, hay rides, and a special train painted to look like a cow. Visitors can also grab snacks from local food trucks and pick pumpkins directly from their patch. Non-profit organization MEarth, located adjacent to Carmel Middle School, exhibits The Glass Pumpkin Patch of Carmel annually over the second week of September. A long-time tradition of displaying the glass-blown art of awardwinning local artists Nick Leonoff and Kevin Chong, the Glass Pumpkin Patch sells more than 1,500 intricately crafted pumpkins in a medley of colors, ranging from the size of a small tangerine to an enormous, well, pumpkin! A portion of the profits from the sales of the molten-glass gourds

benefit MEarth, the Hilton Bialek Habitat, and their position as a major learning resource for young people about environmental stewardship. Also present at the event are a Kids Zone where children can partake in arts and crafts, local live music, and food prepared with the organic produce sourced right from MEarth itself. Borchard Farms at 142 Rodgers Road in Salinas thrives during the fall months due to their time-honored legacy, wholesome atmosphere, and being “the home of the giant pumpkins.” A local family run business for 70 years, it was Tom Borchard who discovered his love of growing massive pumpkins topping the scales at over 1,000 pounds and entering them into contests—winning many of them. Nowadays, visitors to the farm can buy or behold the big, beautiful pumpkins that are often painted or carved with eccentric faces. If you don’t mind getting a little lost, step into the corn maze and wander off. When Halloween rolls around, what better place to celebrate than right on the water? Old Fisherman’s Wharf in Monterey is worldfamous for whale watching, seafood and saltwater taffy, but a special event that flies slightly more under the radar is their Halloween on the Wharf celebration. This year’s function, held on October 31 from 4-7 p.m., will welcome all ages for trick-or-treating, dancing to an expert DJ’s tunes and a costume contest with a cash prize. Whether you are seeking tunes, trains, tricks or treats, a thirty-minute drive in any direction will satisfy your every craving.
