Montcrest Uniform Guidelines
Montcrest School’s uniform philosophy is grounded in a “dress for your day” approach. Our uniform is categorized by Formal, Everyday, and Health & Physical Education (HPE) pieces tailored to each division, with occasional House Shirt and Theme Days. A weekly uniform schedule, by grade, and list of special occasion days is available here.
Students should arrive with appropriate outerwear and footwear to participate comfortably in outdoor learning and recess all year long.
Uniform Category When to Wear
Formal Uniform
Days of significance (e.g. Remembrance Day), Guest speaker events, when representing Montcrest at events, on certain field trips and at Graduation.
Everyday Uniform
Non Formal Uniform days and Health & Physical Education (HPE) class days.
Health & Physical Education (HPE) Uniform HPE class days.
House Shirts & Theme Days
House Spirit days and other themed days (e.g Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Pink Shirt Day, Pride week, etc.
Montcrest Mustangs Athletics Uniform (for CISAA teams)
When CISAA teams have a practice, home or away game, students wear a Montcrest Mustangs Athletics shirt with HPE pants or shorts. (see pg. 10)
Note: Students have the option to scale up their uniform and choose more formal pieces from higher grades if they prefer.

Montcrest Mustangs Athletics Uniform
Montcrest Mustangs Athletics shirts are worn for practices and games, in combination with a student’s choice of HPE bottoms, athletic shoes and socks. Separate numbered jerseys will be lent to students for the duration of their season.
CISAA teams
Required: Students on these teams must purchase either a short sleeve or long sleeve ¼ zip, or both.
Developmental and Open Sport teams
Montcrest Mustangs Athletics shirt (choice of short or long sleeve ¼ zip)
Optional: Students on these teams can choose to purchase, or wear their regular HPE Uniform for practices and games.
Training Pant/Sweatpants/ Shorts (choice of style)
Montcrest Mustangs Athletics socks* or plain white Athletic socks

Used Uniform Sales
The Montcrest Parents' Association (MPA) holds Used Uniform Sales regularly throughout the year, offering second-hand pieces in excellent condition.
Sales will take place in the Taber Tuck Shop (lower level of Thomson House658 Broadview Avenue), and dates will be communicated in The Mirror and on the MPA Resource Page within MyMontcrest.

How do I know what the dress expectations are each day?
A weekly uniform schedule, organized by grade, and a list of special occasion days are available here.
What types of shoes should students wear?
Students are required to wear shoes as listed in our uniform categories and bring additional outdoor footwear for rainy or snowy weather.
What do you mean by a ‘black shoe’?
Black shoes should have both a black sole and upper, without embellishments or contrast stitching. Material and style are your choice. Some examples are Blundstones, Nike, Converse, Mary Janes, loafers or oxfords. Open-toe or open-heel shoes (e.g., Crocs and flip-flops) and black shoes with white soles (eg. some Converse) are not permitted as part of our Everyday and Formal uniform.
What are the guidelines for ‘athletic shoes’?
Athletic shoes for HPE classes need to be sturdy, comfortable and with non-marking soles. These shoes can be any colour, and can range from velcro closure to lace up, from cross-trainers to traditional running shoes.
Can students wear hats and accessories?
Students can wear hats at recess, but they are to be removed at the door when entering the school. Hats should stay in lockers or cubbies until the next recess and not be worn between classes. Accessories like necklaces, bracelets, and hair accessories are allowed as part of the uniform.
Can students wear non-Montcrest gear at recess?
Yes, as long as it is appropriate for a child-based environment and only outdoors at recess. Clothing with words or images that do not align with school values is not acceptable (e.g. alcohol brands, profanity, slang or violent or lewd imagery).
What do students wear on field trips?
When students are representing Montcrest in the community, the expectation is the same as it is at school. Depending on the nature of the field trip, homeroom teachers will provide direction on which uniform category to wear.
If students have practice on a day when they do not have HPE, do they need to change into an Everyday uniform?
No. If students have practice before or after school, they can wear their HPE uniform all day.
What happens if it is a Formal Day and a student has an HPE class?
On formal days, HPE teachers will plan activities that can be done wearing the formal uniform, and there will be no need to change.
What happens if a team is travelling on a Formal Day?
If you have an athletics game, students can arrive at school in their Montcrest Mustangs Athletic uniform, including their jersey, whether it be an Everyday or Formal day.
What happens if I have morning practice on a Formal Day?
If students have practice before or after school on a Formal Day they will be given time to change in/out of their Formal Uniform in our non-gendered washrooms. The only exception is for our cross-country and track teams, which are too large to have everyone change. Coaches will guide families if there is a Formal Day conflict for these teams.
What happens if students don’t have the correct uniform?
If a student arrives at school wearing the incorrect uniform for the day, homeroom teachers will address the issue with the student and make a note during attendance. If students continually do not meet dress expectations, progressive discipline will be considered.
