Dear EarthTalk: What does “phantom load” mean with regard to energy con sumption, how big of a problem is it, and what can we do to prevent it?

Many electronic devices consume energy even while turned off. The total sum of electricity used by devices while in standby mode or powered off is known as a phantom load, an undetected inancial and environmental burdens for most house holds. According to the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC), phantom loads in America accumulate to a cost of $19 billion each year. Ultimately, each American house hold spends approximately $200 annually on phantom loads, as determined by Cit izens Utility Board, a nonpro it/nonpartisan advocacy organization created by the Illi nois General Assembly.

Most phantom load energy is used by devices with remote controls, indicator lights, motion sensors or timers, like a gaming system control box with a small light or a microwave with a clock. Remote controlled systems, chargers, printers,

QUESTIONSAND ANSWERS ABOUT OUR ENVIRONMENT

DVR systems and kitchen appliances are likely phantom load contributors, in lat ing energy bills and greenhouse gas emis sions even when not powered on. According to Columbia Climate School Dean Alexis Abramson, phantom load electricity makes up around ive to 10 percent of all home energy use.

There are ways to prevent phantom loads, like unplugging electronic devices when not in use. After a computer, phone, tablet or digital watch has reached full battery, remove idle chargers from outlets. Also, households can invest in a variety of items to more easily control phantom loads. Single switch power strips allow users to conserve energy by turning off multiple devices in one motion. Larger appliances such as microwaves, toasters and ovens contribute to a phantom load because they have timers, clocks, screens and indicator lights that keep functioning when the appliance is off. When shopping, look for Energy Star appliances, which are designed to limit phantom loads and pro mote energy ef iciency.

POLICE DEPARTMENT, COUNTY OF SUFFOLK, NY ACCREDITED LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY E-Bike & E-Scooter Guide

Suffolk County Police Department Guide on E Bikes & E Scooters

In an effort to educate and ensure the safety of the public, the Suffolk County Police Department would like to make sure that parents and students are aware of and adhere to the following laws governing the operation of e bikes & e scooters.

Individuals operating e bikes & e scooters: must be at least sixteen (16) years of age; 1 must be wearing a helmet while operating (per Suffolk County Code); 2 cannot operate on a sidewalk; 3 cannot operate on a roadway with a speed limit over 30 MPH; 4 must stop at red lights, stop signs and adhere to all other traf ic controls; 5 cannot operate in a reckless manner (zip zagging, trick riding, etc); 6 cannot have passengers; 7 must operate on the right side of the road and low with traf ic; and 8 cannot carry any item that obstructs their vision or affects their ability to 9 operate.

Failure to adhere to the above laws may result in the e bike/e scooter being impounded and/or the operator being issued a summons or being subject to arrest.

* For e bikes, if the motor is capable of propelling the bike faster than 28 MPH, it is considered a motorcycle and subject to the NYS Vehicle & Traf ic Law.

FISHING MONTAUK WITH CAPTAIN SKIP

Well, we had a couple of warm days but that was just a tease. Winter is not going away easily this year. Nevertheless, it is time to get ready for the 2026 ishing season in Montauk! As one of the top 10 ishing destinations in the world Montauk has so much to offer to anglers from all over the planet.

Whether you’re looking to go inshore ishing or offshore ishing, Montauk has it all, from ly ishing with the lightest of tackle, to giant tuna ishing, with the largest of tackle! Not too many places can boast of such variety. Many historical world record catches have been taken right off of Montauk!

The days of the isherman special for the motels and hotels has de initely changed, and the 24 hour diners that catered to the isherman have been replaced by high end restaurants, but yet the isherman still come because the ish still come, that will never change! Back when Thomas Jefferson was commissioned by George Washington to build the Montauk lighthouse they would catch striped bass and use them for fertilizer for their gardens because there was just so many of them. Still after all these years the Striped Bass come by in droves through the Long Island Sound and down the South side headed for the Hudson & Chesapeake like they have done for hundreds of years.

Still waiting on the 2026 regulations to come out not sure if there’s going to be any signi icant changes. Hopefully, they’ll be an increase in the allotment of Black Sea Bass because they are taking over the entire Ocean. Just trying to ish through them to catch a Fluke can be quite frustrating! As usual we will post the inal updates when they come out.

Fuel for Surfers

Wake up. Coffee. Check the surf. Pad dle out. Surf. Breakfast. Have more coffee.

The morning surf routine is delightfully simple, especially in the summer when volatile weather and layers of neoprene are at a minimum. Sur ing does not require an app, signing up in advance, having a class card or imposing cancelation fees, but it does demand that you are up for the task physically and mentally. One way to be at your best in and out of the water is through what you are putting in your body.

Making healthy choices with preferences about what works for your diet are a great start. Incorporat ing more of those choices and adding others speci ically to fuel, recover and reset are critical to our wellness. And it will help you be an ef icient surfer with less op portunities for injury and illness.

Every person’s diet, activity level, and health sce nario varies, but generally we can calibrate our meals to better match our goals. Have you noticed you crave speci ic foods after sur ing? While it is true you are what you eat, this doesn’t necessarily mean you will turn into a ish taco. Ho wever consuming non pro cessed, nutrient dense foods on a regular basis will make you healthier and stronger.

Mindful of a sensitive stom ach or dietary restrictions?

Consuming foods abundant in vitamins, nutrients, and minerals facilitate better di gestion, a robust immune

system and aid in hydration. Think fresh fruits and vege tables, lean protein ( ish, eggs), complex carbohydrates (oatmeal, sweet potatoes), healthy fats (nuts seeds), lots of water. We battle the convenience of less healthy meals over shopping, prepping, and cooking for our own lon gevity. If you are taking the time to surf, why not take the time to give yourself all the support your body needs to fully enjoy it.

fore is how you look and feel sur ing today. A friend would always have a container of raw cashews in his car post sur ing. Another eats avocado, hard boiled eggs and blueberries before paddling out. You must choose what works for you, so be mindful of avoiding added sugars, empty calories, ingredients you cannot pro nounce. In recognition of Women's History Month (an annual observance dedicated to hon oring the contributions of women throughout history and in contemporary society), I had the pleasure of speaking with one of the prominent female igures shaping the North Fork wine scene, Melissa Rockwell, Execu tive Director of Operations at Sparkling Pointe

After admiring the impressive tasting room, Melissa a I sat in a back room with a view of one of their production rooms and had a lovely conversation. Covering many topics, I’ll attempt to share with you some of the highlights of her jour ney in the wine business.

While a student at RIT, Melissa’s curiosity about wine evolved from casual college sipping into a genuine passion after she took a "Wines of the World" elective. She loved the subject so much that she completed four more wine courses before graduating. Returning Home to Long Island, she scouted for opportunities along the North Fork’s main road until she landed a position in the tasting room at Lieb

Over the next ive years or so, her experiences in cluded a position working for Michael Croteaux’s graphic design company, as well as design and whole sale with Lieb. As she immersed herself in different aspects of the business, Melissa realized dealing di rectly with consumers was what she liked best. At the end of 2010 just a year after Sparkling Pointe opened its doors she was hired to run their tasting room. Re lying on her organizational skills and creativity her

Good day and welcome to this month’s edition of the Mon tauk Fire Department Corner, a place where you can stay in touch with the monthly hap penings at the Montauk Fire Department. I hope everyone has had a safe and happy Easter and Passover with family and friends.

I am sorry to report that on March 25th the Mon tauk Fire Department lost a 60 plus year veteran, Charles “Charlie” Morici. He had just celebrated his 88th birthday on February 28th. Charlie was a great guy and a ixture at the irehouse and the hamlet of Montauk. After graduating from East Hampton High School, he joined the United States Air Force where he was trained as a mechanic. He served in Okinawa and throughout the United States for 8 years. Upon leaving the Air Force he and his wife, Betty, returned to live in Montauk. He was hired as a patrolman with the East Hampton Town Police Department where he had a ca reer spanning 25 years, rising to the rank of Lieuten ant. Charlie joined the Montauk Fire Department in the mid 1960’s and was an active member until his death. He was initially a member of Engine Company No. 2 and eventually joined the Department’s Fire Police Company No. 6, where he rose to the rank of Lieuten ant. Also during his time he served on many important committees in the Department and his Company. On Saturday, April 11th the Montauk Fire Department, along with Charlie’s family and friends, said our good byes at his funeral mass. I am proud to say that over 100 Montauk Fire ighters and EMS personnel at tended. On behalf of the Of icers, men and women of the Montauk Fire Department, we send our con dolences to the Moricci family. He will be sorely missed. Patrick’s Day Parade. It was made all the more special when this year’s Grand Marshal was Ex Chief of the Montauk Fire Department, Tom Grenci, Jr. As you can see from the photos the Montuk Fire Department had a full complement of personnel marching, driving apparatus and manning the Department’s loat, a replica of the HMS Culloden. The Culloden won irst prize as the best loat in the parade. Congratula tions to Tommy, he has represented the Department and the com munity of Montauk as Grand Marshal. Thanks to the men and women of the Department who made this event a great success.

Avoiding Vacation Scams

It’s been dec ades since we’ve re ceived one of those “hard to believe travel” offers on the telephone. The typical call was from a company telling us “You’ve won a vacation for two after we had en tered a drawing”. Then the caller added you only have to pay for the taxes and small service fee to process your travel winnings. Right away our suspicions went up because we never entered a drawing or contest for such a prize and the caller was requesting money. When I told the caller we never entered any drawing, his reply was, “Are you sure you didn’t enter a contest at your local mall or a family member did?” I replied no and

politely told the caller we are not inter ested and hung up without further con versation. These types of phony offers are still being made to unsuspecting con sumers by emails, texts or robo calls of fering promotional vacation packages. Often the literature or email will name le gitimate travel agencies we may see ad vertised on television, but in reality they are not connected to those companies. If you have not made the initial call to a travel agent or known company, be cau tious if an unsolicited call or email comes in saying you have won a free luxury va cation or “special promotion”. Remember the old saying, “If it sounds too good to be true”, it probably is. However, here is a side note about accepting an offer that was totally legitimate. Good friends of ours, Joachim and Gudrun that live in Germany recently took advantage of an advertisement of a cruise around the world from the port of Hamburg and back. Writing their annual holiday newsletter, Joachim describes in detail their family news about their daugh ters and grandchildren, as well as their continually travel excur sions. This year’s newsletter de scribed the wonderful cruise they

took via a promotional offer. A cruise shipping company, Phoenix, offered a special deal seeking “ lexible customers” as passengers for just the irst leg of their world cruise. Apparently the cruise line was ilming several new episodes of their

television series, Das Traumschiff (The Dream Boat) that would start in Aruba and continue through the Panama Canal and across the Paci ic Ocean to the South Seas. The name of this series reminded

A CHARLESTON INTERLUDE OF GARDENS, GRANDEUR, AND GRACE THE MIDDLETON PLACE PLANTATION IN SOUTH CAROLINA

There are moments in travel when everything aligns so effortlessly that the ex perience feels almost curated by something beyond us. Our stay at Middleton Place began with a simple search for a two night stay in Charleston, South Carolina. That’s when we discovered, about a half hour from Charleston’s historic district, The Inn at Middleton Place. Once we learned of its fascinating history—and that it had recently joined the Salamander Collection—we were sold.

It was close to 80 degrees when we arrived, a perfect Southern welcome. Check in was warm and unhurried, immediately setting the tone for what this 65 acre award winning property does so well: understated luxury rooted in nature, privacy, and a deep sense of place. It was one of those rare, golden Lowcountry afternoons in late March—soft air, lingering light, and an irresistible invitation to be outdoors.

Our accommodations felt less like a traditional hotel room and more like a private retreat tucked into the landscape. The architecture is intentionally minimalist—con crete, wood, and glass—designed to frame, not compete with nature. Floor to ceiling windows opened the room to the outdoors, as if the Ashley River and surrounding woods had become part of our living space. In side, the palette was quiet: natural textures, clean lines, and a wood burning ireplace that added warmth. Nothing felt excessive. Every element was deliberate. The luxury was in the surroundings.

After unpacking, we wandered across the lawn to a small gathering space where guests meet for late afternoon drinks and light bites. Casual and social, we shared a couple simple plates, chatted with fellow travelers, and discovered the pleasure of pickled okra—a Southern staple that proved both tangy and unexpectedly addictive.

Soon after, we set out in search of the Inn’s famed gardens and stepped into something extraordi nary. Lucky for us, the azaleas were in full bloom—not just scattered clusters, but sweeping, old growth plantings cascading over hillsides and lining the paths. Shades of pink, coral, red, and white blended to gether, while Spanish moss hung above like a soft canopy. The late af ternoon light made everything glow.

Walking further, Middleton Place re vealed its depth. This is not simply a garden, but a designed landscape dating back to the 1740s—the oldest landscaped gardens in America. Inspired by European principles yet softened by the natural Lowcountry terrain, terraces guide the eye, water re lects the sky, and every movement feels intentional.

Along the way, we came upon the Spring House, built in 1741—a quiet structure where underground springs once kept food cool before refrigeration. Inside, original brick basins still hold gen tly lowing water. Crocks remain where they once sat centuries ago. It is simple engineering, quietly brilliant.

Further along, the path opened to one of the prop erty’s most remarkable living landmarks: the Middleton Oak. Estimated to be between 900 and 1,000 years old, it predates everything around it—long before the plan tation, long before the country itself. Its massive limbs stretch outward, low and wide, some now supported to prevent collapse. Standing beneath it, time feels differ ent—not distant, but alive.

He can be shy and unsure in new surroundings, but beneath that quiet nature is a sweet and sensitive companion ready to blossom. Shadow would thrive in a calm home where he can move at his own pace. With reassurance and kindness, he will become a devoted and loving friend.

(ARF Hamptons) will hold its Pet Celebration Day on Saturday, May 2, 2026, from 11 AM to 1 PM at the ARF Adoption Center, 124 Daniels Hole Road, East Hampton. A person, real or imaginary, from whom a place, inven tion, or, commonly, a word takes its name. It also refers to the word itself derived from that name (e.g., "sand wich" from the Earl of Sandwich).

I’ve always been fascinated with word origins, includ ing eponyms, which are words based on or derived from a person’s name. For instance when we hear the name Ebenezer Scrooge, a miser or stingy person comes to mind. Or if we think of a product like a thermos bot tle or Jell o, we all know what that is, but do we realize that is actually a brand name and not generic? Here are a few eponyms that have been created over the years and are easily familiar, but perhaps you may not know their origins.

There are still old movies on television starring the cute child actress of the 1940’s, Shirley Temple. Her singing, dancing and bouncing blonde curls made her the darling of the silver screen back then. From her name a non alcoholic beverage was derived that could be served to children. It was made with ginger ale, a bit of grenadine and garnished with a maraschino cherry. By the way, grenadine back in the day was syrup that was red in color and used to be made from pomegra nate juice. Today it might be more arti icial lavors or other juices like raspberry or elderberry. Of course ev erybody knows what a leotard is as it can be worn in winter as a warmer alternative to stockings, or part of a dancer’s attire. Actually it was named after a famous French trapeze artist of the 1900’s, Jules Leotard that developed the art of lying high on a trapeze. He wore a bodysuit that was skin tight, to make his daredevil acts easier, and so the recreation of this out it now bears his name, leotard.

Continuing with another popular garment, we come to the word, cardigan, which most closets to this day have one hanging there. During the Crimean War, a wealthy British general, named James Brudenell, created uniforms for his regiment that were stylish, knitted waistcoats, the same way he liked to dress. He was the 7th Earl of Cardigan and led the famous Charge of the Light Brigade and returned home a hero. The stylish uniform the cardigan, he created was then named after him and continues to be popular around the world for everyday wear. Hairstyles have also been named after a person famous for wearing a certain cut or creation. Back in the 18th century, the mistress of King Louis XV of France, Madame de Pompadour, wore her hair swept upwards from her forehead, with ex treme volume. (Think Elvis in the 1950’s and other rock stars of that era and their hair styles.) French women of the day co pied her hairdo and referred to wanting a pompadour and the hair dresser knew exactly what was meant. Now we come to a word, the original person might not be so pleased that his name represents a negative connotation. In 1880 a wealthy English estate manager that worked in Ireland set hefty rent hikes and evictions to the tenants. His name was Charles Cunningham Boycott and he angered the farmers by hiking their rents really high so that they stopped harvesting the crops. Even shop owners joined in to support the farm workers and all of them refused to serve Mr. Boycott. To this day, anyone that refuses to deal with an organization, or coun try or protests in some manner, it is referred to as a boycott What do you think of when you see a darkened outline drawing of something, usually a pro ile of a person or animal, done in all black? You’d call it a silhouette. This term came about in the late 1700’s because it was a way to save money producing “portraits.” Here’s what happened.

The French minister of inance, Etienne de Sil houette, raised taxes on the upper class dur ing the Seven Years War to raise funds. Photography wasn’t invented yet and painted portraits were expensive. A cheaper way to portray a face was to make it on black paper as a caricature. So, the name Silhouette became a description for this method.

These organizations create a supportive network for women affected by breast, ovarian, cervical, and uterine cancers. Their services include educational, emotional, financial, and treatment, support- as well as wellness for survivors. They rely on donations, grants, and fundraisers to support their many efforts So don’t miss out on this enjoyable family-friendly event. This panel looks at how artists today are building real, long-term careers without relying on the traditional music industry playbook. We’ll talk about what it actually takes to stay independent—from owning your music and growing a fanbase to playing shows, touring, promoting releases, and making money. Panelists will share what is working and what is not working for them or their clients, and how their approach has changed over time.

John’s career in the business began unexpectedly in the 1980s while managing bars, nightclubs, and hotels, where he discovered a talent for booking live entertainment. From Harrisburg’s iconic Metron (1,000 capacity)—which hosted artists such as The Ramones, Bon Jovi, Hall & Oates, Joan Jett, Simply Red, Steppenwolf and Beck—to the city’s City Island amphitheater, where he produced shows with Grateful Dead, Metallica, Bob Dylan, Motley Crue The Cars and Santanna, John helped put the region on the live music map.

is acting principal investigator of the Perseverance Rover team that discovered possible biosignatures on Mars. Dr. Hurowitz will discuss the mission, its indings and their implications regarding the potential for habitability of Mars.

On September 10, 2025, NASA announced that the Perseverance Rover, which launched in July 2020 and has been exploring Mars since February 2021, discovered the most compelling evidence yet of

potential ancient life on Mars. Stony Brook University geoscientist, Dr. Joel Hurowitz, has worked on NASA’s Mars missions for over twenty years, is acting Principal Investigator on the Rover team, and is the senior author of the article in the scienti ic journal, Nature, that reported on this inding.

BAY STREET THEATER’S SUMMER SEASON HEATS UP!

It’s going to be an exciting season for Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor, which is celebrating its 35th year of ine theatrical productions. This theater, which seats 299 people and is located on Sag Harbor’s Long Wharf, was founded by Julie Andrews’ daughter, Emma Walton Hamilton, her husband, Steve Hamilton, and Sybil Chris topher, in 1991. Over the years they have attracted major actors, musicians and playwrights, and have also added special programs for children and teens.

In addition to shows, Bay Street has attracted well known musicians, and on April 11, they welcomed the music of the New York Bee Gees, a popular tribute band. This sold out show turned into a huge dance party, as lead singer Peter Mazzeo (Barry Gibb) welcomed everyone to come jive to their electric disco hits as “Stayin’ Alive,” and “Night Fever.” Some fans wore colorful 70’s and 80’s disco out its, and the party went on, with no inter mission, until closing.

“The Bee Gees has always been one of my fa vorite bands, and it’s great to be able to dance, since there’s not many places out here for that,” said Jeff Smith of Sag Harbor.

“I felt the New York Bee Gees were totally au thentic, and that if I closed my I eyes, they were right in front of me,” said Juliette Parker of East Hampton.

The Bay Street 2026 season kicks off with a documentary ilm called “Amy & Monte: A Legacy of Love and Creativity,” about the life and career collaboration of artist and fashion designer Amy Zerner and her husband of 50 years, best selling writer and astrologer Monte Farber. rocks to understand the planet’s history and search for signs of ancient life. Last year, it reached an area called Bright Angel, where it found something unique: ancient, hardened mud. Inside this mudstone, the Rover discovered tiny spots and chemical "reaction zones" containing iron, phosphorus, and sulfur. More importantly, these spots are mixed with organic carbon. The evidence suggests that after the mud was irst laid down, a chemical reaction took place at cool temperatures between the carbon and the surrounding minerals. On Earth, when we see this speci ic mix of minerals and carbon, it is often caused by microbes (tiny living organisms) processing nutrients. While the Rover indings don’t yet prove that life existed on Mars, the Rover found the exact kind of chemical "signature" that biology often leaves behind in similar environments here at home. Dr.

Hurowitz will discuss the mission, its indings and their implications regarding the potential for habitability of Mars.

Dr. Joel Hurowitz is the acting Principal Investigator for the PIXL instrument, which is one of seven instruments on board the Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover. He has worked extensively on NASA’s Mars missions, playing roles ranging from scientist, to rover instrument design and operations specialist, to science and engineering operations team leader. In 2006, he received a Ph.D. in geosciences from Stony Brook University. From 2006 2007, he was a Caltech postdoctoral scholar at NASA’s Jet

Propulsion Laboratory where from 2007 to 2013 he served as a research scientist. In 2013, he joined the faculty of the Department of Geosciences at Stony Brook University where he is currently an assistant professor. His research is focused on the study of the properties of ancient sedimentary rocks on Mars and Earth, and what they reveal about past environments, habitability, and biology.

Animal House

Raise your hand if you have seen (or traveled with) a therapy dog or emotional support animal on a plane? If you are a pet owner, are you familiar with treats as positive reinforcement, separation anxiety and PTSD in pets that have had a traumatic past? We apply these ob servations in pets as we do people, but somehow it is easier when we are not talking about ourselves. Or are we?

While we dislike being compared to dogs, we too re spond to positive re enforcement over punishment. When our dog performs a trick, listens to instructions or completes a task, there is a reward. We forget that in humans interactions and often have it backwards. We are punished for speeding, being late, forgetting some thing instead of praised and reinforced when when we do the opposite and get it right.

There is an additional ease in speaking about a dog’s mental health, and we are acutely aware of behav iors they employ to calm themselves down or to act out. Is this projection of our own personalities onto our dogs, or is there is accuracy in what we see? We know that being pet owners improves our mental health, and we try to be even better at interpreting the mental health of our pets.

Humans do however anthro pomorphize pets, treating our animals like hu mans with the same emotions and behaviors to explain what we see. Ironically, people that tend to feel more guilt in general are likely to inter pret behaviors in dogs as anxious and lonely more often that by humans that are not feeling perpetually guilty. So, while we speak freely about our animals, is it us projecting our own feelings, processing our own behaviors through pets? Or can we clearly see that they are signaling? Maybe both. Most of all, having a pet and a pet having a loving home are positive for everyone, deserving some reinforcement.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t wait until Memorial Day to start my grilling season. It happens every year...usually in early March I buy a couple of nice steaks and put them in my freezer awaiting the first warm, sunny day of the season. But first, there’s work to be done and some things of which you should be aware.

In 2013-2017 outdoor grilling caused an annual average of 10,200 home fires, according to the National Fire Protection Association. Gas grills caused more home fires than charcoal grills, the association added. Regardless of the type of grill you own, here are some safety tips that will keep you and your home safe for the grilling season:

1. Grill outside and away from any structures: Charcoal and gas grills are designed for outdoor use only. However, NFPA reports that more than one-quarter (27%) of home fires started by outdoor grills began in a courtyard, terrace or patio, and 29% started on an exterior balcony or open porch. Pay attention to overhanging tree branches when you set up your grill.

2. Make sure your grill is stable: Only set up your grill on a flat surface and make sure the grill can’t be tipped over. Consider using a grill pad or splatter mat underneath your grill to protect your deck or patio.

3. Keep your grill clean: Remove grease or fat buildup from both the grill and the tray below the grill. If you are using a charcoal grill, allow the coals to completely cool off before disposing of them in a metal container.

4. BEWARE THE WIRE BRUSH: If you use a stainless steel or brass wire brush to remove stuck-on food from grill grates, be aware of this surprising downside: Small, sharp bristles can break off as you’re cleaning and get stuck to your grill’s cooking surface. The next time you grill, those stray bristles may adhere to food and be accidentally ingested. (This happened to my brother! He ended up in the emergency room with a wire bristle lodged in his throat! My nephew told me he was quite the celebrity in the ER that night...all the doctors

The Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons (ARF) partnered with Hope4Fur, Run 2 the Rescue and the Andy Sabin Family Foundation to save dogs from the China Meat Trade. An estimated 10 million dogs a year are slaughtered in areas of China for human consumption and endure horrendous suffering before and during their ordeal.

Recently a group of dogs rescued from these conditions arrived at ARF, including basset hounds, pomeranians, corgis, poodles and schnauzers, many of which were purebred. This is the beginning of their new lives and hopefully more dogs will follow in their footsteps to a happier future for them and their future families ready to adopt them.

Unplugging personal electronic devices is a straight forward undertaking by each individual, but it yields a large cumulative impact. Jonathan Gilligan, an environ mental science professor at Vanderbilt University, ex plains that unplugging devices could help reduce U.S. emissions by 20 percent, which is about 450 tons of carbon dioxide. “If people see that other people are doing actions to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, they want to do that,” says Gilligan. Unplugging unused devices and chargers or invest ing in an energy ef icient power strip and appliance is an effective way to lower the cost of energy bills, reduce carbon emissions, and even encourage each other to create a healthy environment.

Dear EarthTalk: Do motorboats still spew a lot of toxins into water? What’s being done to clean them up and are newer engine models greener than the past or not?

In recent years, the climate crisis has drawn increasing attention to the eco logical impacts of everyday activities, including motorboating. Motorboating cre ates immense pollution in various ways. Not only are pollutants often found in the water column of motorboats, but the toxins in the water column can be ingested by ish and, in turn, by people. According to A.K. Whit ield of the South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity, motor boating “has created major problems to the ecology of aquatic systems.”

This is particularly the case with older motorboats. The propellers on such models are of poor quality, thus affecting water clarity by increasing the sediment parti cles in the water. The dissolved oxygen and pH levels can also harm ish around the motorboat, as metals and hy drocarbons are often toxic to wildlife, leading to a decline in marine life. In older models with two stroke engines, the inef icient motor can release unburned fuel, entering and polluting the surrounding water. This pollution does not solely occur at sea; caring for boats can also pollute the water. This is because many materials used to care for boats, such as solvents, paints, oils and other pollutants, can seep into the groundwater. Many boat cleaners also contain chemicals that harm ish, like chlorine and phos phates. Another problem is oil spills, which can release sediments that persist in aquatic ecosystems and harm the bottom dwelling organisms.

An alternative that many boat owners have begun to opt for is newer models, as cleaner, newer technology, such as four stroke engines, is likely to help reduce the inputs of fuel and exhaust in water bodies over time. Particularly if these newer models are used properly through well tuned engines and using the recommended mix of oil and gasoline to help engines run ef i ciently, these models can be incredibly ben e icial in reducing the negative environmental effects of motorboats. Besides buying newer models, some are taking other steps to re duce toxins. For instance, people are increasingly choos ing safe cleaning products that do not harm humans or marine life, as well as carefully fueling boat engines, re cycling used oil, and discarding worn motor parts into proper receptacles. Another step that is being taken is draining water out of tanks during colder seasons to re duce the possibility of bursting pipes.

Voucher incentive programs, which provide coupons, vouchers and inancial incentives to low in come individuals, offer a viable solution. The New York City Health De partment, for ex ample, introduced the $2 NYC Health Bucks coupons in 2004, which gave SNAP recipients $2 to purchase fresh produce for every $5 they spend at a farm ers market. By re ducing the inancial barrier to purchasing fresh produce, these programs allow con sumers to choose healthier food options without sacri icing affordability.

Similarly, Produce Prescription programs expand ac cessible access to fresh foods through a health care pipeline: Health care workers like physicians and nurse practitioners can prescribe fruits and vegetables to pa tients with chronic diseases or a lack of access to nutri tious food. Fresh Prescription, a Produce Prescription program implemented in Detroit, found signi icant de creases in hemoglobin H1c for its participants signifying a lower risk of diabetes complications and better heart health.

These programs have proved successful in improv ing both access to fresh food options and the quality of

people’s diets. According to Fresh Approach, an organi zation that provides Veggie Rx service—a Produce Pre scription Program—in the San Francisco Bay Area, 89 percent of participants reported eating more vegetables since the program began. “With eight people in our fam ily, I’ve had to really watch what I spend money on, so I do a lot of coupon clipping, but you don’t ind coupons for fruits and vegetables,” reports Bethany Thompson, a VeggieRx client. “The VeggieRx program has been ab solutely great because it helps me to actually afford the healthy food that I want to feed all my kids.”

However, America’s food and nutrition insecurity

crisis is far from over. Organizations still face inconsistent funding, limiting the amount of people they can directly assist. Consumers can support these programs by donat ing to partner organizations and telling others how to get involved. Together, the community can help expand ac cess to nutritious food for everyone, by everyone. ———————————————————

Consider using a pumice stone or a coil-shaped bristle-free brush. I use a home-made brush...a wadded up piece of foil held with a long handled pair of tongs! After heating your grill, use the foil to scrub off the grates.

5. Check for propane leaks on your gas grill: Before the season’s first barbecue, check the gas tank hose for leaks by applying a light soap and water solution to the hose and then turning on the gas. If there is a propane leak, the solution will bubble. Other signs of a propane leak include the smell of gas near the barbecue or a flame that won’t light.

6. If the flame goes out, wait to re-light: If you are using a gas grill and the flame goes out, turn the grill and the gas off, then wait at least five minutes to relight it.

7. Take care around the grill: Never leave a lit grill unattended. Don’t allow kids or pets to play near the grill. Never try to move a lit or hot grill, and remember the grill will stay hot for at least an hour after use.

8. Be careful with charcoal starter fluid: If you use a charcoal grill, only use charcoal starter fluid. If the fire starts to go out, don’t add any starter fluid or any other flammable liquids to the fire. Consider using a charcoal chimney starter, which uses newspaper to start the fire instead of starter fluid.

9. Wear the right clothing: Loose fitting clothing is NOT ALLOWED! Clothing can easily catch fire, so be sure your shirt tails, sleeves or apron strings don’t dangle over the grill.

10. Be ready to put out the fire: Have a fire extinguisher nearby...and check that it is charged and ready to use! A fire extinguisher should be purchased at the time you purchase your grill! If you can’t afford a fire extinguisher, you can’t afford a grill. Never use water to put out a grease fire, it will just spread it.

Also on May 9, in honor of Mother’s Day May 10, Bay Street will have a fun show called “Mom’s Night Out,” presented by HA HA Hamptons Comedy. And on May 23, will be “Talk of the Town,” a concert staging of a new musical inspired by the real story behind the founding of the New Yorker in the 1920’s.

June 2 21 marks the beginning of four Main Stage shows throughout the summer, and this line up looks really amazing! The irst show is “Mister Hal ston,” produced in association with Bruce

Robert Harris, and Hamptons resident Donna Karan is Executive Producer. This show is about the rise and fall of famous fashion designer Halston, during the 1970’s and 80’s in New York City.

From June 30 to July 26, the show “Cag ney” will feature this Hollywood legend in an exciting dance musical. Through song and movement it captures his in luence on the era of the Golden Age.

It’s also very exciting to see a Broad way show favorite come to the Bay Street stage, as “Dear Evan Hansen” will make it’s Hamptons debut from August 4 29. Winner of six Tony Awards, this produc tion is being directed by Bay Street’s Ar tistic Director Scott Schwartz, and promises to be a big hit here.

Another Hamptons local, Joy Behar, will present her ive short plays, a world premiere comedy called “Bonkers in the Burroughs,” on September 1 6. Starring Behar and her friends, it takes a candid

look at the absurdities of New York life.

Like Behar, this show is comical and fear less. It should be lots of fun for all, and we are lucky to have such famous talent ap pearing at Bay Street this summer.

These oatmeal cookies are truly versatile besides being soft and chewy. If you’re looking for a crisp oat meal cookie, this isn’t the recipe for you.

Why do I call them versatile? Well, this was once my basic oatmeal cookie recipe, sometimes with rai sins…sometimes not. One day I went to make them and I was down to a snack box of raisins in the pantry. Damn…I really didn’t want just plain cookies! Oh wait… here’s half a bag of chocolate chips! Mixed together they came to 1½ cups! I can truly say this was my best batch of oatmeal cookies ever.

After that, I started adding different things to the cookie dough like assorted nuts (macadamias were really good!), different dried fruits (cut into raisin size), and besides chocolate chips, different chip lavors. So far I’ve tried white chocolate and butter scotch…at a friend’s urging. You can also combine add ins as long the mix comes to 1½ cups. I think next time I’ll try a combination of choc olate and peanut butter chips…I bet you can guess my favorite candy now. I hope you try these cookies. Your friends will think they came from a bakery. Enjoy.

VERSATILE OATMEAL COOKIES

INGREDIENTS:

• 1 cup UNSALTED BUTTER, softened

• 1 cup LIGHT BROWN SUGAR, irmly packed

• ½ cup GRANULATED SUGAR

• 2 LARGE EGGS, at room temperature

• 1½ teaspoon VANILLA EXTRACT

• 1¾ cup ALL PURPOSE FLOUR

• 2 teaspoons CORNSTARCH

• 1 teaspoon BAKING SODA

• ¾ teaspoon TABLE SALT

• 1 teaspoon GROUND CINNAMON

• 3 cups OLD FASHIONED ROLLED OATS

• 1½ cups ADD INS such as raisins, nuts, chocolate chips, etc. (optional)

DIRECTIONS:

Beat the softened 1 BUTTER either with a stand mixer or hand mixer) for about 30 seconds.

Add both SUGARS and 2 beat until light and luffy, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed.

Add EGGS, one at a 3 time, beating until combined.

Stir in the VANILLA EX 4 TRACT.

In a separate bowl, 5 whisk together the FLOUR, CORNSTARCH, BAKING SODA, SALT and CINNAMON.

Gradually add the FLOUR MIXTURE to the BUTTER 6 MIXTURE until completely combined, scraping down the sides and bottom of the bowl.

Gradually stir in the 7 OATS until com pletely combined. If using any ADD INS, stir them in. Cover the dough 8 with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes or up to 3 days. Take the dough out 9 of the refrigerator and leave on the counter for about a half hour to let the dough become easier to work with. Mean while, preheat your oven to 375° with your rack in the center. Line your cookie sheets with

parchment paper.

Roll 2 tablespoon measures into balls and place at 10 least 2” apart on your cookie sheets. (I have a 2 table spoon scoop for this. If you don’t, just measure out 2 tablespoons, make your irst ball, and eyeball the rest to make them about the same size)

Back, one sheet at a time, in your preheated 375° 11 oven for 12 14 minutes, depending on your oven. The edges should be slightly browned. The centers will seem slightly underbaked, but the next step takes care of that.

Allow the cookies 12 to cool completely on the baking sheets. The resid ual heat of the baking sheets will fully bake the centers of the cookies, while not making the edges and darker.

BEACH FIRE – An outdoor fire burning wood materials other than rubbish on a beach where the fuel being burned is not contained in an incinerator, outdoor fireplace, barbeque grill or barbeque pit and has a total fuel area of thirty (30) inches or less in diameter and twenty four (24) inches or less in height from natural grade for pleasure, religious, ceremonial, cooking, warmth or similar purposes. All beach fires must comply with the regulations contained in Section 141-19.

§141-19A.

Beach Fire Regulations

1. Beach fires shall not be started or maintained less than fifty (50) feet from any beach grass, vegetation, tent, fence, building or permanent structure, nor within one hundred (100) feet of any lifeguard stand. Should there not be

enough beach to comply with the fifty (50) foot setback, the location of a beach fire may be reduced to twentyfive (25) feet from any beach grass, vegetation, tent, fence, building, or permanent structure, but in no instance any beach fire be located less than twenty-five (25) feet from any beach grass, vegetation, tent, fence, building, or permanent structure. (Ed. Fires of greater dimension are considered “Bon Fires” and “Open Burning” and as such

require a Burning Permit. An unauthorized open burning or bon fire will result in the immediate issuance of a citation.)

2. Only clean wood shall be used for a beach fire. No chemically treated wood, or wood with paint or nails, nor wood or plastic pallets shall be used.

3. Metal, plastic or glass shall not be placed or thrown into the fire.

4. No beach fire shall be left unattended.

5. A Fire Marshal, Marine Patrol Officer, any person in the Division of Code Enforcement or Police Officer may require that a beach fire be extinguished when deemed to be dangerous due to wind condition, size or whenever atmospheric or other circumstances present an increased fire hazard that threatens public safety.

6. No beach fire shall be started, kindled or maintained if the prevailing wind velocity exceeds twenty (20) miles per hour. However, the Fire Marshal, Marine

Patrol Officer, any person in the Division of Code Enforcement or Police Officer may exercise discretion in requiring that a fire be extinguished when wind velocity exceeds 10 miles per hour.

7. A two gallon bucket of water must be kept within 10 feet of the beach fire at all times.

8. No beach fire shall be set, started, kindled or maintained prior to 5:00 p.m. and must be fully extinguished prior to 12:00 midnight.

9. A beach fire must be fully and completely extinguished with water. No burning, smoldering, smoking, hot embers or debris shall be left on the beach. No beach fire shall be buried or extinguished with sand.

10. All fire debris must be removed and disposed of properly and the site must be restored to its natural condition at the conclusion of a beach fire.

11. All beach fires must be fully contained within a metal container.

Tips to Avoid Scams:

Even if you go into a travel agency of ice or stop at a booth at a mall, ind out if the seller of travel is registered with the department that licenses in your state. Each state has different requirements to obtain a permit as a travel agency and is registered with them. Con tact your Department of Consumer Affairs to learn about the com pany you are thinking of booking your travel. Find out if any complaints have been iled against the travel bureau you are thinking about booking your vacation. After an eye opening morning, we made our way into Charleston’s historic dis trict for a completely different kind of expe rience—afternoon tea at The Bennett Hotel on King Street. A sister property to the Inn, yet entirely different in tone. Where Middle ton Place is quiet and rooted in nature, the Bennett is re ined and polished.

Afternoon tea here is more than a meal—it is an experience shaped by ritual, detail, and artistry. Tiered trays arrive, each level thoughtfully composed: delicate inger sandwiches, warm scones with house made preserves, and pastries that feel almost sculptural. The balance of lavor and preci sion is striking. Deviled eggs topped with caviar offer a playful yet luxurious nod to Southern tradition. Meeting the chef and pâtissier adds a layer of human connection, elevating the experience be yond indul gence. A personal visit from General Manager Marty Hall fur ther re lects the hotel’s phi losophy—hos pitality that is both inten tional and gen uinely felt.

Returning to Middleton Place that evening brought us gently back to stillness. Though the Inn’s restaurant was lively and well loved. Under Executive Chef Caleb Hulsey, the cuisine re lects both place and season with con idence. We began with she crab soup—rich, creamy, and deeply South ern—paired with warm rolls and honey butter. Marcus chose the cold smoked duck, balanced and re ined, while I opted for the shrimp and grits, a Lowcountry classic exe cuted with depth and precision. Dessert— chocolate ganache cream topped with fresh whipped cream and raspberries—was both structured and light. Service elevated the ex perience. Lucy, the restaurant manager since the age of 15, brought warmth and ease, while Ryan, our waiter, was attentive without intrusion.

And then, once again, the walk back. That night, the gardens revealed another dimension. Soft lighting traced the path ways, shadows deepened be neath the trees, and the air cooled, carrying the quiet sounds of the river. Walking back to our suite felt dream like—still, hushed, and deeply atmospheric. Charleston offers many expe riences. But it is places like these—where architecture, landscape, history, and hos pitality intertwine—that stay with you long after you leave.
