It’s almost steady as she goes from the three major players in the PWC market for 2023. Yamaha and Kawasaki are more about colour alters and upgrades to existing models, with Sea Doo reinvent ed a couple of existing models to diversify the brands appeal. For 2023 Sea Doo are offering 17 models, Yamaha 14 and Kawasaki 5. Again, there are only two stand-ups, one each from Yamaha and Kawasaki. All are four strokes and none have yet announced a serious move into the electric PWC market, preferring to leave that to a number of niche companies around the world.

While the 2023 Se Doo model range remains much the same as 2022, there are a couple of new and exciting models for 2023, which offer a whole new perspective to the PWC market. Big news for 2023 is the addition to the top of the Sea Doo line up with the new RXP-X Apex 300. The new Apex is a new carbon fibre style with racing green accents and full of features. A great looker it is also epic to ride and while featuring all the best of the RXPX models, it has even more cool features. There is a dedicated front bumper for added protection and easier handling of the unit when docking, beaching and departing whilst also adding to the machines rugged look
The Apex comes wrapped in Racing Green and Graphite Gray, and featuring carbon fiber on the mirrors and hood with blacked-out emblems. What truly sets the Apex apart from the standard RXP-X 300 (which returns in Millennium Yellow and Premium Triple Black) is the use of a Hydraulic Steering Damper on a reinforced steering column (with three resistance settings).
The adjustable hydraulic dampening action is designed to reduce the amount of rider input necessary to track through chop – particularly at speed – and consequently, reduce rider fatigue. The exclusive Apex also includes both seating options for the RXP-X, the high-backed single seat (Ergolock-R) and the optional passenger seat. Otherwise, all other characteristics of the Apex remain identical as the standard RXP-X (sponsons, power output, weight, etc.)
New for 2023 also is the new long range Explorer Pro 170, Sea Doo’s first ever adventure model.
This machine shares a great deal in common with the Fish Pro Sport 170, employing the full-sized ST3 platform, the same thickly-padded flat “Touring” bench seat, gunwale footrests, a modified Fish Pro extended rear deck and 7-inch Garmin GPS/Fish Finder combination navigator.
The Explorer Pro 170 includes several firsts for both Sea-Doo and the PWC industry like a full-sized removable windshield, a heavy-duty front bumper, a vertically-adjustable steering neck,
a LinQ Explore Bag, a standard LinQ multi-cargo rack, and a redesigned rear platform with three-times the LinQ mounts, allowing adventurers to bring upwards of SIX LinQ accessories! The Explorer Pro 170 will appeal to those who want to venture far upriver, down the coastline, and even camp overnight near the shoreline. These two new models stand alone as the solitary additions to the family of Sea-Doo watercraft, and expands the brand’s already diverse variety of purpose-built products.
Apart from a limited number of new colourations – including the topof-the-line GTX Limited 300, GTI and Spark models – the remainder of the watercraft lineup are direct carryovers from 2022 in both livery and equipment. This decision allows the 2023 lineup to seamlessly dovetail into last year’s production run.

The team at PowerBoat magazine trust their Isuzu D-Max to get them in, out, over and around anything in the way. All while towing a boat behind them.
With the D-Max’s 3500kg braked towing capacity, 5-star ANCAP safety rating and luxury interior features, who can blame them for choosing our bloody tough ute. Take one for a test drive and experience the toughness for yourself.
For just plain fun on the water, it’s hard to beat a PWC. They’re fast, agile and allow exhilarating riding for those with adventurous spirits.
they can be great family rides adding lots of entertainment at the holiday home or the beach for long weekends. And ride-control features make them suitable even for younger members of the household. Best of all, they don’t break the bank they’re among the most affordable of watercraft, easy to buy, easy to tow and easy to store. Fuel consumption is also moderate compared to many powerboats.
Water-jet-powered PWC’s have
been around since the early 1970’s, with gearhead and motorcyclist Clayton Jacobsen II of L.A. and also Kawasaki Motors Corporation USA, headquartered in Chicago, both claiming the original.
Jacobson was ultimately paid some $50 million by Kawasaki for his claim, pretty much establishing him as the father of the genre, but Kawasaki was definitely the first commercial manufacturer of the machine that became known as the “Jet-Ski”— basically, the self-propelled water-ski. The machines quickly evolved
into sitdown vehicles more like a motorcycle than a water-ski, and the modern personal watercraft or PWC was born.
Yamaha’s Wave Runner series and Bombardier’s Sea Doo’s are the bestknown models in addition to Kawasaki Jet Ski today. A few fledgling makers are dabbling in premium-grade PWC’s clearly designed for the transom garage of larger yachts at this point, but production details are scarce.
Water-jet power is the essential feature of all PWC’s, eliminating the dangerous, spinning propeller of most
powerboats. On boats that frequently dump the rider, the safety factor of the jet drive is obvious.
The capability of jet steering systems to allow PWC’s to turn almost within their own length is also a big part of the attraction, allowing impressive trick riding with experience.
The waterjet has a relatively large intake under the hull, a fully-enclosed impeller powered by a 3 or 4 cylinder four-stroke engine from 900 to 1800 cc, and a relatively small steerable output nozzle.
The compression of the water through
the impeller generates thrust, and the steerable nozzle controls steering. Baffles can redirect the thrust to stop the PWC quickly, or to put it into reverse.
PWC’s are designed for one to three riders, and are typically ridden by straddling the center-mounted engine similar to riding a motorcycle, though some models are built for standup operation with no seating.
Intrepid PWC riders take on enormous surf in some areas around the world, proving the capabilities of these tiny machines in expert hands.
Though the primary use remains enjoyable riding and agile maneuvering, PWC’s have also proven themselves very useful work vehicles for marine law enforcement, marine construction, and famously, for towing intrepid surfers into the world’s largest waves. There are also models designed specifically for racing and for fishing. While nearly all are currently powered by gasoline four-strokes, a few electric power models are starting to appear on the market, such as Taiga and Narka.
For just plain fun on the water, it’s hard to beat a PWCPWCs are great fun in the waves and offer a whole new dimension to boating fun.
This is a 1973 Kawasaki Jet Ski, among the first PWC’s on the market. (Kawasaki).
PWCs are used a lot to tow surfers onto a wave.
All PWC’s operate on the basic principle seen here, with a water jet compressing the intake water and shooting it out through the aft nozzle providing both propulsion and steering.
The V8-powered Strand-Craft is not in production, but the company says it should be late this year or next.
Most builders have one or two basic platforms, which they offer with various levels of accessories and features packages—economy, standard and luxury. Small economy models made for one or two riders can be priced from as low as $11,000, while the largest three-rider models fully loaded can be upwards of $30,000.
The most expensive PWC we have heard of is the V8 powered Strand-Craft— which is just a concept so far—will be priced at nearly $80,000 if and when it goes into production in Florida later this year or early 2023.
B. C. D. E.
Single stand-up
PWCs give an extra adrenaline rush.
PWC’s are light enough to be towed by the smallest vehicle, even on a tandem trailer.
Launching and reloading is a snap with PWC’s, which have no exposed propeller to hit the trailer or the ramp during power loading.
Through an agreement with the U.S. Coast Guard, manufacturers selling in the U.S. limit speed of all PWC’s to 58.2 knots (67 mph) to avoid a horsepower race and the resultant dangers to riders. Most performance models can run a bit faster with a light load and in perfect conditions, into the low 60 knot region, but hitting the water at these speeds is not for the faint of heart. (Don’t forget the wet suit or you’ll regret it.)
Just because you’d like to know, the world speed record for modified PWC’s is 110.35 knots (127 mph), set by a turbocharged Yamaha FZR WaveRunner in 2020.
Buying a PWC is a relatively simple transaction, but there are a number of parameters you’ll want to consider to get one (or more) that best suits you and your family. Here are a few things to consider:
1. Determine the number of passengers you want to carry.
2. Compare different models—reclight, recreation, touring/luxury, performance, or stand-up.
3. Decide if you’d like to buy new or pre-owned.
4. Set your budget and explore financing options.
5. Start shopping—find out where to buy.
6. Once you’ve selected a brand and model, consider options—do you need added storage? A GPS? An ice chest? Fishing options?
7. Research personal watercraft values and consult pricing guides.
8. Work with a dealer—and close the deal.
9. Don’t forget the trailer.
Yamaha’s EX Series Waverunners, fly in the face of what is considered “affordable”. The EX Series constitutes two machines in the Rec-Lite category that we had more fun on than should be allowed. With a starting price from $11,999 (inc gst) the features being offered are more than expected, but that’s not a surprise coming from Yamaha. They’ve been doing it for years.
Affordability comes in many forms. Sometimes it pretty much means “disposable” and other’s it means a bargain that is hard to resist. With Yamaha’s EX Series, the two models definitely fall into that latter category. In fact during our performance evaluation of the EX Deluxe, we had more fun than on any of the company’s other machines, probably because this one focuses on exactly that… fun. Not speed, not bells and whistles, not seats made out of Panda… just fun, in its purest form.
For 2023 there are two models to the EX Series…. The basic EX, and the EX Deluxe, which is obviously the top of the line in this re-lite segment. Both are built on the same hull and simply add more features in succession to the Deluxe model.
One thing (of many) that separates Yamaha from the rest of the field is that the company builds watercraft, boats and WaveRunners alike, with stock features and no options are offered… per se. You can get options, but you have to get them in a different model. So as we move through the EX series of WaveRunners the difference between the two is separated only by the amount of “standard” features that each one has. The higher the price, the more features it has, all attached to the same hull with the same dimensions. This is how Yamaha controls its pricing. All the machines are cookie cutter versions and there are no up-charges.
Both models are made from fiberglass. Not plastic. That’s a major feature right there and one that really serves to differentiate the EX models from the competition. The strength of the SMC (sheet moulded compound) build alone is worthy of a higher price tag, but here, it’s held down, mostly through the refined build process and the above mentioned fact that all come out the same. And with fiberglass construction these fun models will be in the family for years.
Fuel Efficient TR-1 Engine. This award-winning 3-cylinder, 4-stroke 1019cc engine is 40-percent smaller, 20-percent lighter and more fuelefficient than its 4-cylinder M1 predecessor. All while putting out more power.
Because of this, the EX models are shorter, lighter and more affordable than any three-person, 4-stroke WaveRunner that Yamaha has produced in the past. The engine is drawing fuel from a 49.97 L tank, which is a significant increase over competing models in the Rec-Lite category. Best of all… the TR1 engines burns regular 91 octane fuel.
New Hull Design and Handling. Yamaha came up with a new hull design for the EX series that seems to be more forgiving and predictable in its handling characteristics. During our tests we found precise handling response and a stability that we did not expect. In fact, while evaluating its handling our test captain tried every move he could to get the EX to roll over and dump him in the water but it just wasn’t having any of it. By the time he was done, it was as if the WaveRunner sat there saying, “what else you got?” No matter what we did, the EX remained predictable, precise and fun. Did we mention fun?
Was it still a wet ride? Of course it was. That’s part and parcel of what these watercraft are about. Getting wet and wild. If you want dry, get a boat. No one ever went to the waterfront restaurant in a suit and fancy dress while riding a personal watercraft. It’s not what these are made for. You wear a bathing suit and a floatation vest. Storage capacity is 29.15 L in three
straps that hook onto a pair of back knobs.
The second, and most convenient, storage is just ahead of the driver and behind the handlebars. This is where the quick grab items go such as the drinks. Put the cellphone in a dry bag if it goes in here, or anywhere for that matter. None of these compartments are watertight.
The third storage is under the seat in two removable containers just above the engine. One of these, the forward one, holds the fire extinguisher. True three-person capacity. This is a big feature and one that is optional on competing watercraft. Both the seat, and the EX models are large enough to hold three persons. Now that takes more than space, it takes floatation and stability as well. Sometimes adding a third person means adding an optional set of features, such as the bigger seat and larger rear deck for added floatation. At Yamaha, these models hold three people right out of the box.
A tow hook is included so that the EX models can all be used for watersports. This is a big feature since all three models carry three people so we can still tow while having a legally required observer onboard.
Mechanical Reverse is a convenience feature that increases the functionality of the EX Sport well above the base EX and it makes docking and manoeuvering much easier. A reverse lever is alongside the body of the WaveRunner, to the right. This means that we have to take our hand off the throttle to engage the reverse mechanism. This pull-lever is cable connected to a reverse bucket that drops down behind the jet exhaust to redirect the thrust forward, thereby backing the WaveRunner. Steering is reversed in this mode so to steer correctly, we continue to steer the bow, not the stern.
Dual Mirrors. The EX Deluxe also offers dual mirrors which go a long way towards not only keeping us safer, it also helps when towing a tube. For the safety factor, it’s nice to be able to see a boat about to overtake the EX (as if), and for towing, remember that mirrors do not take the place of the legally required observer, it just enhances the driver’s orientation to his/ her surroundings. Reboarding Step. This makes it much easier to re-board the EX Deluxe. A flip down step to the starboard side of the aft platform provides a stepping point
for coming aboard rather than having to climb aboard the platform from a floating position.
In addition the EX deluxe also adds a two-tone cut and sew seat. This may not seem like much but it does add a significant amount of class to the EX Deluxe. Metallic Paint Colours may be another feature that doesn’t really improve the ride or comfort but certainly ups the class level another notch.
This is probably the most significant features of the EX Deluxe that makes it worth so much consideration.
RiDE used to stand for Reverse with Intelligent Deceleration Electronics, but it has now evolved to much more than that, but the name stuck. The RiDE Technology in the EX Deluxe is controlled from the left trigger of the handlebars.
Reversing: The throttle is still on the right side, and probably always will be. Now, however, we add a trigger to the left side of the handlebar for the RiDE technology. Squeeze it and the EX Deluxe shifts (actually the reverse bucket drops down, there’s no shifting in jet watercraft) into reverse. Now we can manoeuver around the dock and even back off of the trailer or beach.
Steering is reversed so when backing, we steer the bow, not the stern. So we have reverse with a trigger now… but as the saying goes… wait, there’s more.
Neutral: Just a quick squeeze of the left trigger drops the EX Deluxe into neutral. This is pretty intuitive. If we think of pulling the trigger back to back down the EX Deluxe, it’s just as easy to think of pulling the trigger back briefly as a means of stopping the forward motion, but not causing reverse motion. Try it once and it clicks forever. Now again, there’s no shifting of gears going on here, the reverse bucket simply is dropping down just enough to deflect the thrust that is always coming out when the engine is running, down instead of forward or back. That keeps us from moving but turning the wheel will still cause us to pivot, rather than turn. Pretty neat. Braking: When cruising at speed, squeeze the left trigger and intelligent braking kicks in. We say intelligent because imagine cruising at full speed 44.4 knots (51.1 mph) and hitting reverse. What would likely happen is the driver, and passengers would be launched over the handlebars, as both the reverse thrust and plunging bow would contribute to the resulting deceleration trauma.
Instead, when squeezing the RiDE
trigger at full (or any) speed, the engine slows (regardless of how much we’re holding the throttle trigger) while simultaneously dropping the reverse bucket. Now we can stop the EX Deluxe in the shortest distance possible while still remaining onboard and in full control. We tried it over and over again and it worked flawlessly. Keep squeezing and the braking reverts to reversing.
Performance: With the TR-1 powering the EX models, Yamaha reports a top speed of 44.4 knots (51.1 mph) and a best cruise of 25.2 knots (29 mph) with a 12 litre fuel burn.
There’s certainly a lot to like with the EX models. Depending on what features you’d like, the important ones are readily available in both models. For more advanced features, there are more advanced models in the lineup but that brings them out of the scope of the affordable EX series and we delve into the VX and FX lineup. Either way, there’s no denying that these are among the most fun machines we’ve tested and the safest as well. Pricing and stability seem to be the two hallmark takeaways from our performance evaluation and inspection.
