Oculus DESIGN FOCUS

LO N G D I S TA N C E C R U I S E R

Oculus is the first “design launch” of Schöpfer Yachts LLC.

T

his 250-foot vessel was designed by E. Kevin Schöpfer, founder and owner of his namesake company. Designed to accommodate 14 guests in extraordinary comfort and style, Oculus is a long distance cruising yacht capable of speeds upwards of 21 knots. The exterior styling is representative of the jaw and eye socket bone structure of large oceanic fish and mammals. Featuring a dramatic reverse bow configuration, the yacht’s armature balances an elegant expression of symmetry and structure. In addition to the bow, Oculus also

features a “low rider profile”. This slightly lowered surface allows for new side recreational areas, alternate dockage access and light cruising openness. Lateral retractable side panels close this area when heavier wave action is indicated. The interior features of Oculus focus on a 12 foot high ceiling in the main salon, a cylindrical double height dining room, central stair and elevator tube, and seemingly anatomical ceiling and floor lighting extensions giving definition to the seating areas. The second level is the dedicated Owner’s suite. Living areas and bedchambers are divided by a series of

four freestanding tubes, which house bath and storage necessities. In addition to the main common stair, the second Owner’s stair connects to the third level aft private salon and deck / water feature. The third level also contains the forward pilothouse and separate captain’s quarters. The generous open decks with separate water features are located forward and aft for convenient guest use. Specifications and plans are in the final stages of completion and will be posted at a later time. www.schopferyachts.com

2019 plans T WAS SOMETIME IN 1998 when Footprint we have been approved to use myself and Tim Porter (Boating NZ) Thank you to Panuku Development Auckland and Viaduct Harbour Holdings approached Peter Busfield, Executive Director of the BIA (now MIA - Marine Industry Association) about getting an on water boat show started, one that could handle non-trailerable boats. While the NZ Boat Show in May, held at Greenlane was suited to trailerable boats, it’s inland location didn’t suit the big cruisers. The logistics and costs of moving boats to the showgrounds put a lot of companies off and apart from a few such as Genesis and WaveCrusher, non-trailerable boats were rarely displayed. At that time the Viaduct was being developed due to the America’s Cup and it presented the perfect venue to display not only boats in the water, but on land on Te Wero Island. The rest they say is history and the first BIA-owned Boat Show was held at the America’s Cup Village Island in Feb 1999. It proved an instant success with over $25 million of product on display. There were around 50 boats on the water and a further 30 on the island. The American Express New Zealand Cup Village Island as it was called had exhibitors inside displaying a vast range of marine hardware, especially engines, electronics and clothing. We were there with both Propeller magazine and our recently launched, Launch & MotorYacht. My memory fades a bit, but I do recall we had a reasonably good show and most exhibitors were very positive and indicated they would return in 2000. Over the years the show outgrew the venue and as the commercial operators packed out the viaduct berths for the rest of the year, they were not always happy to move for even a few days. In 2001 the organisers also utilised temporary sheds being used by AC team Stars & Stripes and America True. In 2011 the big move was made to the current venue at the Viaduct Events Centre where the show has been headquartered for the past seven years. In 2017 the show, since renamed the Auckland On Water Boat Show had been grown to many more boats on the water and onshore exhibitors housed in two marquees and around the Events Centre. Every year the show has been full or close to full and last year the marina space was increased to accommodate the growing number of exhibitors requiring water space. Well, 2018 will be the last year the Auckland On Water Boat Show will be held at the Viaduct Events Centre because Team New Zealand will be taking over the site for their America’s Cup base. They have already taken occupancy of the top floor and will be moving into the remainder of the Events Centre immediately after the show. So where to for next year? The MIA has been working hard with their planning for 2019 and beyond and have secured a new show site at……. Te Wero Island! Yes, it’s all going back to where it all started. The on-water space takes on a whole new look with custom berthage being built especially for the show, large marques and possibly even a two-story temporary building. Plus some of the outdoor space around the Viaduct Events Centre/Team NZ base will remain and probably be used to display trailer boats. The 2019 show will be held around the same time in September.

iving in Auckland and paying Auckland’s ridiculous fuel prices these days is driving me crazy - sure, it’s my call to live in Auckland, and I understand the taxes are to help pay for improvements to Auckland’s public transport system which is well needed. But my problem is having to pay regional and road taxes, on the fuel we are putting in our boats !!! A few years ago I brought this up with the government and NZ Marine also chased the issue. We were told that the road tax portion on the fuel for boats would be put back into boat ramps and marine facilities around the coast of New Zealand - that was 5 years ago - and I am not aware of any significant improvements at any of the ramps I visit around the country! On top of the Government’s proposed increased excise on fuel, likely to be about 3 or 4 cents per litre each year for the next three years, Aucklanders are now also paying an extra 15 cents (regional tax) more a litre at the pump. When I checked today, Auckland petrol is sitting at anywhere between $2.10 and as high as $2.50 per litre, diesel as high as $1.53 per litre. For those that enjoy numbers, NZ Marine has done a survey and come up with some estimates as to the fuel we are probably using each season. 180,000 x Trailerable Power Boats between 3m and 9m, on average these boaties typically use 50 engine hours per year, this is about $600 per year x $2.30 per litre = $1380pa x 180,000 boats = $248,400,000 of fuel burnt a year - with a good portion of that being road tax. Using a similar formula for our 450 x 9m plus petrol powered launches and we have another $4,140,000. Add in other petrol powered boats (dinghies, barges, houseboats etc) and that gives us a grand total of 114,800,000 litres (@ $2.30) = $264,040,000 spent on petrol by NZ recreational boaties. An estimated $103,700,146 of this is gst, road user and regional taxes. The estimated 8550 diesel-powered recreational launches (9m plus) average 100 hours pa (burning 20 litres per hour) and you can add another 17,100,000 litres. With an Auckland Regional fuel tax of 10c per litre, our recreational launch owners are paying $1,700,000 in road tax. If these millions of dollars of regional taxes, gst and road user taxes are to be put back onto our industry - I look forward to the much needed improvements to our ramps and marine facilities - certainly more than what we have seen in recent years. Happy Boating Doug Dukeson

aving been in the marine industry for over 30 years, I have seen many changes. There has been a real lift in professionalism, particularly with the larger dealers. At Family Boats we compare ourselves to a high-end European car dealership who are very professional in sales and service and our industry has come a long way, but there is still room for improvement. At Family Boats we have invested heavily on our indoor showroom that can hold more than 25 boats and 20 Yamaha Watercraft as well as an outdoor yard which is the biggest in New Zealand selling new and pre-loved boats. We stock a wide selection of alloy, fibreglass and inflatable brands both NZ made and imported from Europe and the Americas. But all of this investment is no good without a good team behind you. Our sales and operations team have over 200 years of combined marine industry experience all this helps to keep us in the number one spot for boat & watercraft sales in New Zealand. Alloy boats now make up 62% of the New Zealand market, fibreglass is about 30%, and the balance is mainly RIB Inflatable Boats and some roto-moulded plastic boats. Alloy boats have grown in popularity as they have become much better looking , finished and built, they are far more practical and easier to customise for clients. I believe in NZ we make the best alloy boats in the world. Southern Boats are a great example of a good quality alloy boat and are more often compared to a fibreglass boat than they are to other Alloy brands. Southern has invested a lot of capital in designs, finish and ride quality and we feel they are at the pinnacle of the alloy boat market. Surtees is another quality alloy boat brand that is NZ made and has a massive following with their strap line being ‘Built to Fish’ so is extremely popular with those who like to fish. Fibreglass boats sold in NZ are mostly NZ made such as the likes of Buccaneer and there are about six major players that have invested a massive amount of money in designs and moulds to keep their sales going. Gerry & Jenny Gerand, the owners of Buccaneer Boats, now have 17 different models, which offer clients a lot of different options from bowriders to outright fishing boats, all of them well finished and great riding boats that suit most of the NZ fibreglass buyers market. Rigid Inflatable Boats (RIB) is the fastest growing in our industry and globally due to their excellent smooth ride ease of use and versatility. BRIG RIB inflatables from Europe and AB inflatables from the Americas are major global brands now well established in New Zealand and these brands are superbly finished and have many different designs to suit various applications. Their volume of production is in the many thousands so they can always keep ahead of the market. As they have massive volume, they are also very price competitive. At Family Boats we have been selling RIB inflatable boats up to 10.5m and are the primary supplier of tender boats to large boat brands such as Riviera, which is doing exceptionally well in this market. One of the biggest things that people have to remember about is resale values. A good quality brand of boat well maintained, will have excellent resale value versus a brand that is less known and not as well made will lose a lot more value and is also a lot harder to sell. Summer is just around the corner so go out now and spend some quality time on the water with family and friends.

Whitehaven 6000 Flybridge defines custom design Spacious, gracious and entirely unique, the latest addition to the Whitehaven fleet, the Whitehaven 6000 Flybridge “La Robelle” was one of the stars at the recent Sydney International Boat Show. At 62’6” (19.1m) LOA, La Robelle was custom crafted to her owners’ requirements and is destined for many fantastic days cruising from her new home-base of Brisbane. With her metallic silver hull, La Robelle is the sister ship of her equally customised predecessor, the navy-hulled Bella Sky. “Her owners inspected Bella Sky at the 2017 Sydney boat show and were impressed with their ability to customise their own version of this exceptional model,” explained Ryan Hanson, Production Director at Whitehaven. “They made up their minds that the flybridge model, with its massive social and entertaining space and aft deck, was ideal for them and worked closely with our design team to bring their vision to life.” The owners selected Whitehaven for the numerous features they could include in their 60-foot cruiser, including the generous indoor-outdoor entertaining zones and the spacious tender garage. The 6000 Flybridge offers the option of either a tender/toy garage to accommodate craft up to 3.6m or a Beach Club/ recreational room with a full bathroom including shower. Both are accessed via internal stairs from the saloon.

22 PACIFIC POWERBOAT SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018

During the 12 months of La Robelle’s construction, her proud owners visited their vessel twice - once at the factory and then again for sea trials. “They are thrilled with the appearance and performance of La Robelle,” stated Mr Hanson. “Their vessel is unique, finished in gloss walnut with their own 3Beaches textiles on furnishings throughout. They are particularly pleased with the huge entertaining spaces, including the aft seating on the flybridge, as they plan to host a lot of people onboard during their cruising north to the Whitsundays.” On the water for only a few months, La Robelle has already inspired her own homage, with a 6400 model in the works. This exciting model offers a variety of amenities including a Beach Club with full wet bar and bathroom, a tender garage, which can accommodate a huge 4.2m tender as well as a laundry with separate washer and dryer, or a full-beam guest cabin with queen sized bed and ensuite, all with sensational views via the transom door. All options are accessed internally via stairs from the saloon entertaining area. This new model will also have extra spacious saloon and flybridge entertaining zones and to top it all off, the flybridge will also have a day head which is ideal for longrange cruising, additional guests or crew. www.wmy.com.au

2018 SIBS CLOSES ON HIGH NOTE T

he Sydney International Boat Show for 2018 has closed, with industry participants feeling positive and buoyant about the event, following some apprehension in 2017 when entering a new facility. Domenic Genua, Event Manager for the Boating Industry Association (BIA) Ltd who organise the event, said “This year’s show hosted 59,753 visitors over the 5 days. While this is 5% (or 3,292) fewer visitors from the 63,045 last year, it is also above expectation. Both history and research showed that an element of last year’s visitors were those inquisitive about the new facility. This bodes well for the show and is a testament to the importance of the event with the rebound from our days at Glebe Island continuing.” On display at the show was an array of products that assisted existing boaties upgrade and improve their vessels, as well as helping those new to the lifestyle learn about how they can venture into boating for the first time. The boat show fulfils many things for many people. As an industry, the BIA was able to share the beauty of the

recreational marine lifestyle, and various methods of sharing that lifestyle, with visitors to the show. President of the BIA, Alan Blake said, “We made a few changes to the venue layout and signage this year to assist with visitor traffic flow and experience, and that appears to have had the positive impact we had hoped for. Along with the effective industry response presenting A class exhibits, visitors to the show enjoyed an exceptional opportunity to satisfy their expectations and to help make their time on the water safer and more fun.”’

“Overall, a positive result for everyone,” Domenic Genua. Show dates for 2019 are 1 to 5 August.

Suzuki New Zealand To Take Over Marine Distribution From September 1, Suzuki New Zealand Limited will once again be the distributors of Suzuki marine engines. The distribution and marketing of marine outboard motors were previously done through Haines Suzuki in Australia, but the New Zealand subsidiary of Suzuki worldwide now takes over that responsibility for this corner of the planet. “It’s huge and we’ve recently employed extra staff to help cope,” said Wanganui’s Simon Meade, Suzuki New Zealand general manager of motorcycle/ATV and marine marketing. The first confirmed sale of Suzuki outboards by Suzuki New Zealand has been made to Coastguard Wanganui, enabling them to upgrade their craft’s power-plant from the current DF150 to new model DF175APX.

With a number of high-profile rescues associated with this organisation, the choice of Suzuki as an engine supplier is a strong endorsement of how the coastguard organisation regards the reliability and performance of these four-stroke engines. Tom Peck, the CEO of Suzuki New Zealand Limited, said he was excited to have Suzuki Marine join the already successful motorcycle and ATV business and motor vehicle network. “With our motorcycle brand holding

the number one position in the New Zealand market since 1998, and a very strong market share in the small motor vehicle segment, we are looking forward to promoting Suzuki Marine from September 1,” Peck said. www.suzukimarine.co.nz

SUPERYACHT BERTHS INCREASED FOR AC. With over 100 superyachts expected to be in Auckland for the 36th America’s Cup, there has been a rush to find berthage for them all, something that is a major issue in Auckland already. Auckland city has plans to construct an additional 60 superyacht berths to make a total of 92 available. It is reported that half all the berths have already been booked by superyachts planning to visit for America’s Cup. With previous America’s Cups, Auckland is already well supplied with superyacht berths. The Silo marina can accommodate superyachts of 100m (328ft) or more. Also taking account of the long journey the yachts will have to make to reach Auckland, the city has recently announced a new repair and refit facility to be developed at what is

DIESEL SPEED RECORD CORRECTION

In the previous issue of PPB, we ran a feature on the breaking of the long standing diesel speed record and made mention of the record breakers that had gone before. However, we somehow left out Carpe Diem which held the record at 41.83kts from 1992 - 1995. CHASING THE WAKE OF SUCCESS Stressfree Marine have just launched their latest winch incarnation they call the Wakechaser. A remotecontrolled winch for on-the-water rope adjustments in seconds, this revolutionary new product is ideal for both professional and recreational wakeboarders, waterskiers and water sports enthusiasts. Before the Wakechaser, wakeboarders, water skiers and tubers would manually adjust and tie-off rope onto a tower while docked. With the new Wakechaser, adjustments can be made on-the-water, to suit any rider, making it easier to change riders and change rope length when individual riders are chasing a wake or perfecting a trick. The drum capacity can store up to 30.5m of rope. The Wakechaser solves another headache in the wakeboarding, water-skiing and water sports world - the issue of manual rope pull-in and tangled rope in the boat while on the water. The fully automated remotecontrolled winch mechanism simplifies water sports for riders, boat operators and observers. Retrofitting to any boat tower, The Wakechaser can be retrofitted to any boat tower. www.stressfreemarine.com.au

Twin Disc is 100 years strong Along with radar, bombsight gyroscopes and Nylon, one piece of crucial technology gave the Allies the edge in WWII and had been credited as the advance that secured victory: the Higgins boat, with Twin Disc marine transmissions. This ingenious vessel enabled the Allies to launch the surprise attack on Normandy. Twin Disc’s history is interwoven with this incredible craft. From a background in farm tractor clutches developed by company founder, P.H.Batten in Racine Wisconsin in 1918, Twin Disc developed durable marine transmissions for Great Lakes fishing boats in 1930, manufacturing countershaft reduction gears with 100% reverse power. When WWII broke out, Twin Disc won the Navy’s contract for marine transmissions on more than 20,000 Higgins landing craft.

The utilitarian and rugged Higgins Boat was conceived by American inventor Andrew Higgins. Working in the timber industry, Higgins always had an interest in boats, building his first in his garage before he was a teenager and then developing an extremely low-draft boat to transport lumber from in a shallow waterway. He undertook a correspondence course in naval architecture and in the late 1930s, took ownership of a small shipyard in New Orleans. By then, Higgins’ special shallow-draft boat had become a vital piece of kit with loggers and oil drillers. They were “tunnel stern boats” whose magic was in the way the “hull incorporated a recessed tunnel used to protect the propeller from grounding,” according to the Louisiana Historical Association. Higgins called it the “Eureka” boat. The war brought interest from US forces in a similar style vessel to attack unguarded beaches and avoid coming ashore at heavily defended ports. The Marines chose the Higgins boat, transforming Higgins’ company from a 50-employee business into one of the world’s largest manufacturers. Though Eisenhower and even Hitler acknowledged the importance of the Higgins boat - military leaders came to call it “the bridge to the beach” its builder went mostly unmentioned in histories of the war. That is, until 18 years ago, when the World War II Museum opened in New Orleans and

30 PACIFIC POWERBOAT SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018

recognised Higgins’s life, displaying a reproduction of his boat. In the biography written by historian Jerry E. Strahan, titled “Andrew Jackson Higgins and the Boats that Won World War II”, he writes “Without Higgins’s uniquely designed craft, there could not have been a mass landing of troops on European shores or the beaches of the Pacific islands, at least not without a tremendously higher rate of Allied casualties.” For Twin Disc, this year commemorating its 100th anniversary, excellent service during WWII earned the company the Army-Navy “E” Award, reinforced its reputation for reliability and expanded Twin Disc’s marine transmission applications to coastal fishing, shrimping, and transportation vessels all over the US. Twin Disc continued to increase its transmission line throughout the 1950s to include more types of commercial vessels as well as pleasure craft. In the following decades Twin Disc complemented this critical link between engine and propeller to include electronic controls, highspeed surface drives, the revolutionary QuickShift transmission, propellers, joystick controls, various boat handling components and, most recently, a position holding system all for application on shaft-line dieselpowered workboats and pleasure craft. www.twindisc.com.au

OCEANMAX UNVEILS NEW PRODUCT FOR UNDERWATER LIGHTS Marine coatings company Oceanmax launched its new product, Lightspeed, at the Auckland on Water Boat Show. The first transparent foul-release coating specifically formulated for underwater lights, Lightspeed will be distributed by West Marine and Land ‘N’ Sea in the United States, Burnsco in New Zealand, and All Marine Spares and QEP Marine in Australia. Following the success of Propspeed, Oceanmax’s industryleading foul-release system for propellers and running gear, the company adapted its proprietary coating technology to maximize the long-term performance of underwater lights. Like Propspeed, Lightspeed is an eco-friendly alternative to conventional anti-fouling, which has recently come under regulatory scrutiny due to its toxic biocide content. Lightspeed’s technological advantage comes from its proprietary silicone base, which enhances luminosity by increasing emitted light organization while decreasing its scatter. Unlike current competitors, which are opaque and use toxic chemicals to kill marine growth, Lightspeed repels growth by creating a nontoxic, “super-slick” transparent coating that prevents barnacles and algae from colonising on underwater surfaces in first place. www.oceanmax.com

He said the X series’ innovative design made a strong statement to the industry that Maritimo is a united team committed to further establishing itself as industry leaders continually pushing the boundaries of design and technology. From its race infused bloodline, the X50’s powerful exterior form blankets an innovative yet simplistic functional web of expansive customisable arrangements and advanced design

features that will be inherent in all X-Series models. The Maritimo X50 design incorporates an innovative aft accommodation space accessible from saloon and swim platform deck. The customisable aft cabin can be optioned and utilised as a beach club with ensuite, twin single stateroom with ensuite or 3.2 metre tender garage. Experience gathered from the company’s international racing development program have been infused into the design and construction of the vessel. Volvo Penta D11 670hp or 725hp power units are located further forward to neutrally balance the hull and minimise shaft angle, resulting in increased efficiency and a flat efficient planing attitude. In addition to the trademark X series aft accommodation the new X50 has two large staterooms and ensuites in the forward accommodations. “By designing the third stateroom to be situated in the aft cabin, it creates much more space to expand the size of the two forward staterooms, incorporating design influences from

the X60 accomodations. The X50 also features a large full beam master stateroom with queen bed standard (king optional), desk, day bed, and spacious ensuite. The saloon design incorporates optional three stage sliding vista windows that flank each side of the hard top letting in unprecedented amounts of light and ventilation when needed. An optional sunroof centered over the galley provides the ability to lighten and ventilate the saloon. The performance inspired dashboard and helm, with optional second helm seat and available joystick docking systems, are designed for both comfort and control. The expansive cockpit features a starboard side entertainment unit and two opposing euro lounge units that can be combined to form an eightseat protected dining area. The X50 has a starting price of ($Aud1.398m) and will premiere at the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show in May 2019. www.maritimo.com.au

OXE & DTorque NOW AVAILABLE T

HE diesel outboard revolution has undoubtedly started, with a recent media day held by Power Equipment Ltd in Melbourne, Australia where two brands were unveiled. No longer just renderings and drawings, the German-engineered Neander Dtorque 50hp diesel outboard, globally marketed by Yanmar and the OXE 150hp and 200hp diesel outboards, designed and built by Cimco Marine in Sweden were available for on the water testing. Power Equipment General Manager Luke Foster says, “These are the first high output diesel-powered outboards that were specifically designed and manufactured from scratch, rather than existing engines that were modified to accept diesel fuel.” Each of these companies has invested years of research and development in creating diesel outboards that can meet the demanding requirements of commercial operators and military vessels. The Dtorque 50hp and OXE 150hp and 200hp are now available for order in Australia and New Zealand. Power Equipment Product Manager Noel Van Der Meulen says, “Each of these outboards offers significant benefits that have not been available before. Because they are diesel-powered, these outboards deliver superior torque and lower fuel consumption than comparable petrol-powered outboards. They also provide operators greater safety because of their lower fire risks.

38 PACIFIC POWERBOAT SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018

DTORQUE:

TWIN CRANKSHAFT POWER HOUSE

The 50hp Dtorque diesel outboard delivers more torque and consumes less fuel than comparable 60-70hp petrol outboards. Frugal fuel consumption means the diesel Dtorque reduces the number of refuelling stops and gives lower running costs than petrol outboards. Its fuel consumption is 10-12 litres/hour and it peaks when the petrol engine is just starting out. At full throttle, a petrol outboard will consume 2.5 times more fuel than the Dtorque. Dtorque’s diesel outboard has a unique 804cm3 twocylinder powerhead that produces an impressive 50hp at the propeller. More important is that torque output peaks at 111 Nm at 2500 rpm, which outstrips the latest four-stroke 70hp petrol outboards on the market today. A significant innovation is the Dtorque’s dual counter-rotating crankshaft design. By generating opposing forces, the two crankshafts cancel out most of the vibrations around the steering axis that would otherwise make such a small and powerful two-cylinder diesel hard to handle. At idle, the Dtorque is quiet, and once on the water, the noise it produces is negligible. Acceleration is the same regardless of the load. It has an exceptional lugging ability and reaching the plane is quick and smooth. The engineering expertise Yanmar has invested in the Dtorque diesel outboard does not end there. Dtorque diesel outboards feature common-rail fuel injection and turbocharging, which also contribute to better performance, fuel savings and lower emissions. The Dtorque 50hp is now available for order in Australia and New Zealand at an approximate retail (plus GST) of $AU54,000 / $NZ59,000

OXE:

AS BIG AS IT GETS….FOR NOW

The OXE 200hp diesel is the world’s first diesel outboard engine in the high horsepower segment. It has a unique beltdriven propulsion system coupled to a full hydraulic multiplate clutch transmission. The OXE diesel outboard is a common-rail, turbocharged engine that provides high efficiency and torque. It delivers powerful thrust and acceleration and can carry heavy loads. The engine can be mounted horizontally, doing away with vertical shafts and bevelled gears, and allows for the full torque of the diesel to be transferred to the propeller shaft. It also provides crash stop capability, smooth gear engagement and low-speed control. It has a closed circuit cooling system inspired by modern inboard technology. This allows Cimco Marine to add a powerful alternator and cabin heating, which are essential to anyone who operates in cold weather or uses demanding power equipment. OXE Diesel outboards are designed to work for extended periods between servicing. This keeps maintenance and lifecycle costs to a minimum. The outboard’s modular design makes it easy to change parts and maintain the engine. All service points are on the front of the engine so that maintenance and servicing can be done on the water. Cimco Marine’s patented belt drive on the OXE Diesel gives excellent torque transfer without affecting hydrodynamics and is coupled to a hydraulic multi-plate clutch transmission.

Belt propulsion gives operators transmission efficiency that is usually only found in inboard engines. By switching the orientation of the primary belt housing, you can change the gear ratio to suit high torque or high-speed operations. The belt propulsion unit has no bevel gears and it transfers more torque to the propeller. This means the engine can have smaller torpedoes and a slimmer submerged module. Again, the benefits of this are less drag, lower fuel consumption and higher speeds. Because it delivers high torque, the OXE diesel has also been designed to support large diameter propellers specifically for high thrust applications such as displacement vessels and work barges. Likewise in high-speed operations, the high torque levels provide superior acceleration and higher load carrying capacity, without compromising on performance. The gearbox is located under the powerhead but above the waterline, so it is protected from damage if the craft runs aground. It is designed to withstand crash stops and it can transmit full power to the propeller in both forward and reverse. The gearbox has an electro-hydraulically operated clutch with sensor-controlled propeller speeds. This gives seamless low-speed control from zero to maximum RPM and allows for smooth shifting between neutral, forward and reverse. The approximate retail price (plus GST) of the OXE 150 is $AU57,000 / $NZ62,000 and the OXE 200 is $AU68,000 / $NZ74,000 www.powerequipment.com.au www.powerequipment.co.nz

Volvo Penta’s hybrid IPS propulsion system will enable zero emissions operation for marine vessels.

VOLVO PENTA UNVEILS HYBRID MARINE PROPULSION CONCEPT Designed to enable zero emission running for marine vessels, Volvo Penta has unveiled a hybrid concept for its IPS propulsion system. The electric-only mode allows entry into environmentally sensitive zones, as well as offering enhanced onboard comfort and boat handling characteristics. Hot on the heels of Volvo Penta’s announcement that it will provide electrified power solutions for both land and sea by 2021, the company has revealed details of a hybrid-powered Inboard Performance System (IPS) concept. Designed to extend further IPS’s advantage, the hybrid variant will allow boats to operate in the low-and-zero emission zones that are expected to be introduced in the coming years. The hybrid configuration will also bring additional benefits, including lower noise, vibrations and running costs. The IPS hybrid system is planned initially for the 8-13 litre engine range – suitable for powering vessels such as ferries, pilot and supply boats, as well as yachts. It uses proven hybrid technology first developed within the Volvo Group, which Volvo Penta is now adapting and certifying for marine applications, using its extensive boat propulsion experience. “A hybrid provides a flexible solution, one that maintains the high efficiency offered by the IPS system and adds the ability to run in zero emission environments,” says Niklas Thulin, Volvo Penta’s Director of Electromobility. “With full torque from the electric motor available instantly, the boat will maintain the responsiveness and controllability that IPS is famous for in electric-only mode, as well as offering the ability to run at 10 to 12 knots.” 40 PACIFIC POWERBOAT SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018

How it works A clutch and electric motor are added between the engine and the IPS pod. The electric motor is supported by scalable (depending on application needs) Li-ion battery packs that can be charged externally using AC or DC chargers; or recharged using the primary diesel engine. Opening of the clutch allows the boat to run in electric-only mode, and with the clutch closed both diesel and electric power can be used in parallel. In terms of operation, the captain will use the familiar control interfaces of the IPS system, with the addition of new drive modes to choose from.

Scalable design The modular nature of the battery packs allows customers to tailor the design and performance of both commercial and leisure boats. More battery capacity offers extended electric-only cruising, and – with frequent external charging – the use of smaller diesel engines and lower fuel costs. With the electric motor and batteries maintenance-free – and the diesel engine operating for fewer hours – the cost of servicing should also be noticeably lower. Volvo Penta will continue to support customers in tailoring a prop-to-helm configuration based on the specific application needs. The hybrid IPS will be available to commercial customers in 2021, followed by a leisure boat option soon after. www.volvopenta.com

ARCHERS WIN SI MARATHON SERIES T he final round of the 2018 NZBMC Championship run by the Gore Boat Club saw the Skater 34 Fairview, driven by Warren Lewis easily take out the winning spot, from fellow North Islander Shannon Martin in the twin Verado powered Cat “Race For Life”. While both A Class Tunnel and A Class Vee Championships had already been won by Craig Archer in the Playco (vee) and Ryan Archer in the Hirepool Stealth (tunnel) there was still a Trophy Championship to fight for with Craig heading into the final round with a slim advantage over Ryan for the CB Marine and Single Rig Driver of the Year Championship honours. From the flag drop, the Playco bullet got the early lead over Hirepool and never looked like giving it up over the 100km race, giving Craig the result the team has been trying hard to win for the last three seasons.

Wayne Valder and Chris Hanley are still in contention to take out the US1 title in Superboat but need a strong finish in the final events. The seven-race series allows a team to drop one event for the final points tally

B Class honours again went to Jamie Chittock in the Yamaha powered viper “Enforcer” wrapping up an impressive and consistent season for their first year running in B Class giving him the Class Championship. Greg McEwan had the speed on competitors for C Class in “Vindicated” to take first place for the round however it was not enough to take out the Championship with Nigel Smethurst in the “LJ Hooker” Sonic keeping the point scoring up with a second place giving him enough to take out C Class for 2018. D Class race honours went to Alan Weir in the Stealth “Pog Mo Thoin”. But like C Class a winner had already been determined, as had the Howat Trophy - C & D Class Driver of the Year with ever consistent performance from John Buckland in “Renegade Fighter / Dreamweaver”.

and as PPB went to press Pro Floors had run four of the five events, choosing not to run the Mentor, Ohio event. The team had a very successful race at Sarasota with a great win taking them to second place in the points.

42 PACIFIC POWERBOAT SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018

Jane Pollard in “Pacifier” got the last laugh in what has to have been the closest racing all season, finally getting a win over John Weild in “The Stig”. John had the E Class Championship sewn up before the round and also took out the MLC Trophy - E & F Class Driver of the Year and finished the season with the highest points overall giving him the rights to run number 1 for the 2019 season. A DNF in the final round was still enough to claim Mike Bloxham in “McLay 1” the 2018 F Class Championship. Life member Doug Payne took out the G Class Honours in “BlackDog Cat”. This wrapped up another action filled season with plenty of close racing, with the inclusion of the two big Cats from the North Island adding another dimension.

The next race was Michigan City which saw them out to an early lead, but unfortunately, due to a power steering hose leaking, they were forced to retire. This now placed them in fourth place in the championship with three races left to run with the final round at Key West, Florida (Nov 7-11). With the top four positions all very close, so it is still anyone’s championship.

REALITY CHECK: BUY OR CHARTER Envoy, our Greece-based Nordhavn 46 passagemaker, is currently for sale (see www.envoyinthemed.blogspot.com for details) and one enquiry is from a Kiwi saying due to work commitments he's only able to travel to Greece to use the boat for about one month a year. He asks my opinion on this idea. As much as I'd like to sell Envoy and proceed with our new boating plans I don't want to mislead anybody so tell him it would be much more practical and cost-effective to charter one of the thousands of boats available throughout the Med. He agrees. We've chartered boats several times here, in Britain and in Queensland's Whitsunday Islands and never been disappointed. If you own a boat locally there's a lot to be said for chartering overseas during our winter for a muchneeded sunshine boost combined with enjoying a cruising adventure in a different location. Consider the Whitsundays, Pacific islands, the countries bordering the Mediterranean, the exotic Caribbean or Alaska's Inside Passage. Alternatively you could explore British canals by narrow boat or meander through European canals. However it's quite another option and mindshift to charter locally instead of owning your own boat, even though there's a compelling logical and financial case to do so where people enjoy boating, but would use their boat infrequently (say less than about 20 days in a year). There are two main issues to consider when comparing ownership with charter – the intangible and the tangible (financial) aspects. Several intangible factors favouring ownership include pride in your vessel, the ability to potter around aboard doing odd jobs, having the exact boat and equipment you prefer, knowing how to handle your own boat and her limitations, being able to keep your gear aboard and unrestricted availability. Conversely several intangible factors favouring charter include the ability to use different types and sizes of boat, cruising in different locations, being able to step on and off without the worry of repairs and maintenance (R&M) and being able to try out cruising before making a major financial commitment to purchase. Then we come to the tangible – the financial question. The cost of boat ownership is something many owners probably don't like to think about and is only generally discussed in hushed tones, preferably without spouses present. As the saying goes, if you have to think about this you can't afford it. Let's consider the costs attached to a typical 12 metre twin-engined planing flybridge launch about 15 years old 44 PACIFIC POWERBOAT SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018

costing $300,000, of which there are many similar examples advertised. First you have to consider annual cash costs which I've calculated as: marina $8,500, insurance $2,800 and R&M $12,000, totalling $23,300. In this calculation the marina and insurance costs can be accurately defined, but R&M is always a guestimate based on factors like the vessel's age and condition, how much work the owner does versus using contractors, how fastidious the owner is and whether the owner wants to upgrade ageing equipment etc. Some years may be less than $12,000 but in other years factors will certainly come out of left field to exceed it. Since we are comparing ownership with charter, where diesel is an extra cost, the above figures don't include diesel, but a good guess on costs would be about $11,000 based on using your boat for a reasonably common 200 engine hours anually and a diesel cost of $1.70 per litre. To bareboat charter a vessel around 12m typically costs about $1,000 to $1,500 per day, so let's take an average of $1,250. This would reduce if you share the charter experience and cost with others. These figures show you only need to use your boat more than 19 days per year for ownership to be the better financial option. However we are missing vital components in this equation – the non cash costs of depreciation and opportunity cost. The vast majority of boats depreciate and like cars the level's higher for newer boats. A fair figure for depreciation on a boat of this age would probably be around 5 per cent annually, so in the first five years of ownership the depreciation cost would be $90,488 or about $18,000 per year. Opportunity cost refers to the fact that if you didn't spend that $400,000 on a boat it would be earning for you. In recent years that would easily be 5 per cent annually in a managed fund. So over 5 years that is over $110,000 or about $22,000 annually. Are these “real costs”? You betcha – the actual figures may vary higher or lower than this example but they are real nonetheless. Now we have quite a different picture with your total ownership cost being about $63,000 annually and chartering being beneficial at any usage level below about 50 days per year. Of course if you borrow money and pay interest to buy your boat the figures change even more in favour of chartering. To hell with logic though, in our case we'll follow our hearts not our heads and stick with ownership combined with occasional chartering in exotic locations.

See it on the water and you’d be hard-pressed to pick the difference between the 72 and 68, but while virtually the same boat, the 72 been upsized. And just like McDonalds, you get a lot more for your money and what you get extra is certainly worth having. The extra length is evident in the twin level cockpit with more deck space, plus with the extended hull, the fuel tank capacity has been able to be increased from 8500 litres to 10,500 litres. The 72 Sports Motor Yacht has all the right attributes to be either a seriously comfortable, practical cruising boat or a dedicated sports fisher. The cockpit is clearly defined with two distinctive areas, each for a distinct purpose; aft deck for fishing and upper deck for entertaining. While there are plenty of choices on how you configure the boat when you look at the options and build list, the 72 SMY has been so well resolved and considered, I can’t see why you would change anything. This multi-faceted approach covering a wide range of owner’s needs is what Riviera has been promoting with the sports motor yacht range which now comprises three models; 39, 68 & 72. The Riviera 72 Sports Motor Yacht is one metre longer than the 68 SMY in both overall and hull length but shares the same beam. After all, both boats are from the same set of moulds, but due to the extra length, the 72 SMY comes in at 47,000kg dry displacement and the 68 is around 1000kgs lighter at 46,000kg. The 72 also carries more fuel and water and while a pair of 1550hp MAN V12 engines is the standard engine package in the 68, these are speced up to 1800hp MAN V12s for

the 72 SMY. However, both boats are available with the MAN V12 1900hp engines, a pair of which were in the 72 SMY I had the pleasure to experience. Power is transmitted through Twin Disc remotemounted Quickshift gearboxes that integrate with the Express Joystick System and Seatorque’s The Boss, bolt on shaft system. This is an enclosed, oil filled, self-contained, shaft and thrust bearing assembly, supplied as a complete unit from the transmission output coupling to propeller end. The 72 SMY was also fitted with Seakeeper 16 gyro stabiliser. The first impression when driving the 72 SMY was just how intuitive everything was and the effortless way in which the boat handled. Running across a 1/2m chop with 10 knots of breeze, the 72 SMY was smooth, vibration free and extremely quiet. The hull runs true and straight and by pre-setting the Humphree Interceptors, we maintained an optimum running angle of around 4.3 deg. At 18 knots @ 1600 rpm the I recorded a low 61dB in the flybridge and even at 1900 rpm @ 25 knots - an ideal cruise speed at 80% load - that only increased to 65dB. Maximum speed is close to 35 knots. Big boats can be a handful, but not so the 72 SMY, and while I appreciate some owners would choose to have a captain and maybe a deckie on the boat, to me it’s a boat that can be run by just two people…it’s that easy! The hull was designed by Mulder Design in the Netherlands and tank tested at the Wolfson Institute at the University of Southampton in England. This all-new Riviera hull delivers in every aspect of performance and handling, offering a smooth dry ride at any speed.

ONE LEVEL The effect of opening the considerable hopper window and saloon door is one of complete openness and with the U shaped galley to port, it’s a convenient saloon layout. However, just as easily as you can expose yourself to the elements, you can also shut it all down and keep warm inside. The varnished walnut timber cabinetry encases a four-burner induction cooktop with pot-keepers, range hood, a large convection microwave oven and a dishwasher. The galley also offers exceptional refrigeration capacity with four drawer fridges and two freezers. It’s a galley suitable for a Masterchef winner. There’s a large lounge to port and, to starboard, a leather dinette that seats up to eight people. A most relaxing setting complemented by a 55-inch TV, that is easily viewable from both the lounge and dinette. A watertight pantograph door on the port side leads to the side deck, and an internal timber staircase provides direct access to the flybridge.

Clockwise:

The foredeck lounger is certainly going to be well used.

A Masterchef style and equipped galley.

Triple 22-inch navigation screens dominated the helm.

The Classic accommodation layout offers a massive midships master stateroom.

The forward VIP stateroom is spacious with its own en-suite.

COMMAND CENTRE I loved the layout of the saloon, the enlarged cockpit and even the master stateroom, but when I entered the flybridge, I was in a different world. I don’t like using the phrase state-of-art, but it is probably the best way to describe the helm station. Set into hand-stitched leather is a comprehensive engine and control system, complete with Twin Disc electronic joystick system (EJS) and three 22inch navigation screens. You can have up to four. Helm seating comprises a central Norsap helm seat and port side companion seat. Guests can relax on lounges across the entire starboard side facing the helm, skipper and an entertainment unit. A distinctive feature of this space is a fold-out double bed secreted under the aft lounge, offering additional accommodation. Ideal if you do happen to have a captain or some additional guests. A stainless steel framed glass door and awning window connect the flybridge with a large aft deck complete with dedicated engine control station and alfresco dining area with an L-shape seating area, wet bar, as well as space for two stand-alone dining chairs.

FOUR STATEROOMS There are two accommodation options available; the three cabin Presidential and the four cabin Classic, both with three bathrooms. The Classic accommodation layout offers a massive midships master stateroom with ensuite bathroom along the starboard side.

54 PACIFIC POWERBOAT SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018

The Presidential suite features a larger full-beam master stateroom with ensuite in the starboard forequarter. A private sitting area on the starboard side can serve as an open workstation, make-up bureau or breakfast retreat. Both Classic and Presidential options feature a kingsize bed, a feature headboard and bedside tables with leather in-lays and ample storage underneath. There are his/hers cedar-lined hanging wardrobes on either side of the stateroom. The VIP guest stateroom forward includes a walkaround queen-size bed with storage beneath and wardrobe space either side, outboard cupboards and a private ensuite. The port cabin aft of the guest stateroom features twin single beds which can form a double as the inboard bed slides across. The Classic layout includes an additional fourth guest cabin with full-sized pullman-style beds, cedar-lined hanging wardrobe and bedside table. The two cabins share a bathroom located on the port side, forward of the twin cabin. With the Presidential layout, you also get a dedicated crew cabin, complete with head/shower, while in the Classic this is turned into a storage and utility room. Access is via a staircase from the port side of the saloon, with a watertight bulkhead door providing entry to the engine room. The spacious full height engine room has eye-height engine systems monitors and remote controls. Everything that needs to be easily accessible is close at hand, so you don’t have to be a contortionist to check any of the system or components.

The extra length of the cockpit has allowed for an increase in storage options with the expansive cockpit, (16.32 m2) offering a very relaxing and entertaining space. A large barbecue unit is set forward of the cockpit in cabinetry located below an elevated mezzanine deck. The elevated alfresco mezzanine forward of the cockpit includes a sizeable under-cover dining area. A bar with two swivel stools under is set below the awning window, creating additional informal seating in the mezzanine. The cockpit is not your only outdoor option as Riviera have also created a large rear deck with L-shape lounge and table off the Flybridge. They have incorporated a foredeck sunken lounge area on the 72 SMY. With seating for eight, the deck also includes a hydraulic crane and tender that are designed to fit atop the entertaining area. There is also a bimini option. What was once a mostly unused area has been transformed into a functional workspace and separate relaxing zone.

SUMMARY The 72 SMY is truly a genuine sports motor yacht in every sense and combines all the great accommodation amenities, internal layout, enclosed flybridge, separate entertainment areas and raised mezzanine cockpit of a traditional motor yacht, but with the speed and performance of a sports cruiser. Attention to detail, the level of finish and the engineering throughout the 72 SMY is exceptional. It’s a boat that looks modern and comes with all the integrity and support that people know Riviera deliver. It’s a boat for all generations.

NEW ELECTRIC SPEED RECORD 58 PACIFIC POWERBOAT SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018

Jaguar Vector Racing have broken the outright world and national electric speed records in a battery-powered boat. The unique Jaguar Vector V20E recorded an average speed of 88.61mph across the two legs of the famous 1km course on Coniston Water, England.

T

he new world and national records broke the previous electric best of 76.8mph set in 2008 Developed in partnership with Jaguar Racing’s technical partner Williams Advanced The battery powered F1 tunnel boat was developed using Formula E technology The electric boat was designed and constructed by Jaguar Vector in partnership with Jaguar Racing’s technical partner Williams Advanced Engineering. Jaguar Vector co-founder and technical director Peter Dredge piloted the V20E. “After 12 months of hard work, this is a fantastic result for the team and our partners and a great first step in bringing the power and versatility of electrification to the marine industry. It is a great honour for the Vector team to follow in the footsteps of Donald Campbell CBE and to set a world record on the historic Coniston Water”, says Malcolm Crease, CEO, Jaguar Vector Racing. Williams Advanced Engineering have supported this new world record by Jaguar Vector Racing by using their knowledge of electrification to provide the boat’s electric

power, motor and control systems. Their experience from powering the entire Formula E grid for the past four seasons of racing and their ongoing partnership with Jaguar in the ABB FIA Formula E championship provided the technical and operational platform required to achieve this result. Williams Advanced Engineering is the technology and engineering services business of the Williams Group. Williams battery expertise first originated from its Formula One programme, following the introduction of Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems into the sport in 2009. Williams Advanced Engineering drew upon the battery systems used in Williams’ Formula One cars to create new battery and battery management systems capable of powering a fully electric racing car and now a boat. Following Jaguar’s announcement in October 2017 to become the exclusive title partner of Vector, the team will attempt further world and national records over the next 18 months as part of a major initiative to push the boundaries of performance and to showcase British engineering. SEALEGS 8.5M ALLOY CABIN

Who needs a boat ramp when you have a sealegs.

The 250hp Yamaha gave a top speed of 38 knots.

Y

es, it was a quiet Tuesday news-day in Sydney’s ritzy Rose Bay, yet for once the lycra-clad, latte-sipping lovelies in the nearby café were largely overshadowed by this intriguing amphibian. On engineering merit alone, the new Sealegs runabout is irresistible to the average red-blooded male with a modicum of mechanical curiosity. Aesthetically it cuts a fine figure as well. What’s most interesting, perhaps, is that we haven’t seen a Sealegs cabin boat before, save for a 7.7 RIB and 2100 Stabicraft. Really these are niche outliers, whereas the 8.5m Alloy Cabin takes the Kiwi company deep into the plate-alloy territory beloved of fishermen, divers and camping folk. There’s enormous competition here from a plethora of skilled builders, so any new plate model must quickly stand on its own two feet … or three feet in

the Sealegs’ case. And indeed the 8.5 should, judging from our two-hour test on a petulant Sydney Harbour. Australian sales manager Michael Rigby reckons he’s been chomping to sell a genuine offshore boat. And once in the brine the 8.5 is certainly a proper contender, completely uncompromised by the amphibious appendages. Not all its buyers will be beachfront home owners, although it’s certainly the jewel in the crown if you’re fortunate to have one. Many will be content to simply drive on and off the trailer wearing their shoes and evading the boat ramp blues. Brilliant, too, for inhabitants of tidal areas. As testament to the finish and fit-out, a fisho at Sydney International Boat show asked if he could buy one without wheels. That would be sacrilege, however, for the hull was designed from the keel upwards to incorporate legs.

COMING ON STRONG The bow and stern are appropriately strengthened to bear the load and there’s an underfloor grid structure to keep the 6.7-metre hull taut and true amidships. For both the underbody and topsides, they’ve employed 5mm plate. The cabin, attractively finished with flush-fitted glass panels and a slim roofline, rests seamlessly on old-school sheerline that sweeps down from the bow then flattens for the cockpit run. A plumb bow allows the front wheel to hinge well clear of the waterline and rest just shy of the lengthy bowsprit. From here, the hull has a good amount of both rocker and curve in the forward sections before flattening to a 16-degree vee aft. A pod extension supports the motor and hydraulic paraphernalia. There’s just one strake and a chunky chine to 62 PACIFIC POWERBOAT JULY/AUGUST SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018 2018

provide lift, grip and hydrodynamic stability, which is all refreshingly simple and sensible in a world riddled with marketing gimmicks and meaningless acronyms – especially since it works with ease and efficiency. Mated to a Yamaha F250 V6 outboard, the 2.2-tonne hull blasts onto the plane in just a few seconds, without bow lift or hesitation, and it can maintain a minimum plane at 10 knots with a fuel burn of 18 litres an hour. Acceleration is sweet throughout the rev band, as expected from the maximum-rated powerplant. At 4000 rpm with moderate out-trim, the 8.5 pulls 25 knots and seems happy as a hog in mud, taking waves in its stride while drinking modestly from the 250-litre underfloor fuel tank. Top speed during our test was 38 knots, impressive in the choppy conditions. Michael Rigby got fully airborne on a ferry wake during the photoshoot but the aforementioned rocker and roll in the forefoot cushioned the landing. At the same time, Zipwake tabs help provide a sure-footed ride in cross seas, dynamically keeping the hull on an even keel. They cost $Au3490, money well spent. It’s not the quietest ride, and there’s pedestal or pod seating for only two of the six-passenger complement as standard, unless you consider the cabin’s veelounges. Otherwise it was hard to fault on our test day – the wind protection afforded by the cabin makes life a breeze, so to speak, as does the fingertiplight Seastar power-assisted hydraulic steering. Speaking of which, Sealegs offers EPS or “enhanced power steering”, whereby magnetic sensors keep the bow wheel centrally aligned when raised, rather than continually turning with the helm. When the landing gear is lowered, wheel steering locks in automatically.

READY FOR LANDING Approaching shore, you summon a four-stroke 35hp Briggs & Stratton engine that resides in a transom hatch and powers the hydraulic pumps, sipping from the same fuel tank as the outboard. As a 50% upgrade in standard horsepower, it gives the Sealegs 8.5 a 7.5 km/h land speed and operating range of 3.5 kilometres, on a maximum incline of 14 degrees. Legally it’s a boat up until the high-water mark, although in Queensland they can apparently have a limited road registration akin to a farm tractor. The bow wheel lowers first under the watchful eye of a camera that projects to the Simrad NSS12 chartplotter, plus there’s an audible beep to confirm the ram is fully engaged. Next go the two 26-inch aft wheels to provide a paddlewheel effect and drive when they finally touch bottom. The throttle is adjacent to the driver’s hip, some 400mm behind the outboard throttle. Hydraulic motors propel the all-wheel-drive system,

Hydraulic motors propel the all-wheeldrive system, with a diff lock being optional. Sealegs parked up on the beach in front of the restaurant. Perfect! A very busy helm, with inboard, outboard and leg controls, as well as all the necessary electronics.

It’s strange and magical to roll up the beach high and dry, again to an appreciative audience of camerawielding onlookers. Once ashore, the skipper lowers the wheels and can heroically transition through the open transom to a two-step ladder and then the beach. To get forward while aboard, the 8.5 has nominal walkaround sidedecks with 3M anti-slip tread or, better still, access through a deck hatch.

Layout-wise, owners can spec the hull virtually any way they want. Offshore fishing is the obvious market, and for that you can have a livebait tank, bait station, underfloor kill bin, outriggers and gunwale padding, along with cockpit shelves, rocket launchers on the cabin top and aft station, and a concealed Savwinch drum winch. A plumbed marine toilet is a $1990 option for the cabin, residing beneath the centre squab. Lighting comprises a bow-mounted LED headlight for land use, LED nav lights and white/blue interior lights. Maximum beam is just 2.3 metres, well within towing limits, which somewhat limits cockpit space relative to its opposition. From a durability perspective, hydraulics are used in all kinds of equipment, in all kinds of environments, including power trim on outboards. The seals that keep oil in also keep water out. An unexpected bonus comes when hosing down the hull – you can get underneath without worrying about trailer rollers and lower the stern to drain the cockpit. As tested, splendidly rendered in Majestic Blue topsides and Arctic Grey, the Sealegs 8.5 Alloy Cabin retails for just under $290,000 sans trailer. Not cheap, but good value for the right buyer. The leg componentry represents perhaps a third of that cost, and you can be assured of strong resale value because of the specialty value. The Sealegs 8.5 stands head and shoulders above conventional plate boats on land and easily holds its own on the ocean.

HILST NOWHERE NEAR THE AUTOMOTIVE OR MOTORCYCLE INDUSTRIES (OR EVEN THE LAWN AND GARDEN EQUIPMENT SECTOR) IN TERMS OF OVERALL INTERNATIONAL VOLUME, IT MUST BE BORNE IN MIND THAT, WITH ONLY SIX KEY MANUFACTURERS, THERE IS ENORMOUS POTENTIAL FOR EACH OF THE MAIN OUTBOARD COMPANIES TO ACHIEVE MARKET SHARES WHICH WOULD COMPLETELY ECLIPSE EVEN THE WILDEST DREAMS OF ANY AUTOMOTIVE CEO. A COMPANY THAT HAS RELENTLESSLY BUILT, STAMPED AND CONSOLIDATED ITS AUTHORITY IN THE OUTBOARD SECTOR WORLDWIDE IS YAMAHA AND DANNY CASEY PROVIDES SOME INSIGHT INTO THIS CONSISTENT, PHENOMENAL AND UNTRAMMELLED SUCCESS.

Standing alongside the 5.3 litre V8 F350A is the 123cc P7A, the first outboard model made by Yamaha (1960).

Heritage Like all Japanese companies, Yamaha is delighted to let people know, albeit in a subtle, modest but nonetheless proud Japanese way, of its heritage and about its voyage from humble beginnings to the present. To this end, many Japanese companies – and Yamaha is no exception – will have a corporate museum, usually based at corporate HQ rather than at a manufacturing facility. Yamaha’s museum is on the first floor (second floor in Japanese/American parlance) of the company’s headquarters in Iwata City. One can tell that this museum means a lot to Yamaha. It operates

as a division of the company, with full-time staff, and sells merchandise, memorabilia and clothing. I have been fortunate to visit this museum three times, and despite decades in the outboard industry, I was drawn each time to an object of such innovation, beauty, perfectly proportioned presence and rarity that it never failed to stop me dead in my tracks. Between breaking cover in 1967 and the year of its untimely demise in 1970, Yamaha produced only 351 units. Whilst it most certainly has an engine, it is not a motorcycle; nor is it a boat or an outboard motor, nor is it a special-purpose, prototype or F1 GP engine. It is a car - a sports car, in fact. It is the Toyota 2000 GT - built, in-house, in its entirety, by Yamaha, under contract to Toyota. The one in the Yamaha museum is of a very peculiar, but somehow appealing, metallic brown (almost muddy green!) hue with a stunning wooden dashboard, wooden steering wheel rim and wooden gear knob – all magnificently created, in a superb example of inter-company overlap and harmonious corporate synergy, by the Music Division of Yamaha Corporation. When introduced in the US, the 2000 GT was $1,000 more expensive than the vehicle it specifically targeted, the E-Type Jaguar, which would help explain the paucity of sales. However, try to buy one today (assuming you could even find one - and the one in Yamaha’s museum is most emphatically not for sale), and you would firstly have to find close to US$1.5m. While somewhat of an off-topic start,

68 PACIFIC POWERBOAT SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018

and not really at the core of what will be discussed here, the foray into the creation of the Toyota 2000 GT served to illustrate the nous, technological competency and innovation possessed by Yamaha, and the company’s adaptability, readiness and ability to participate, compete and excel in any sphere it chooses. Whilst there is certainly some innate Japanese caution at Yamaha, it is also a company to challenge convention and not afraid to step outside its comfort zone. Beginnings and Identity Torakusu Yamaha, who founded the company in 1887, began by building high-quality reed organs. Over many years, the product range (all musicbased at that time) expanded greatly to include pianos, electronic organs, keyboards wind instruments and, later, audio-visual equipment. In 1955, Yamaha Corporation created a spinoff company called Yamaha Motor Company Limited, which initially began to produce motorcycles. The first president of the newly created Yamaha Motor Co. Ltd was Genichi Kawakami. The motorcycle (and now powersports) entity, Yamaha Motor Co. Ltd, is operated separately from Yamaha Corporation, but Yamaha Corporation is the largest shareholder in Yamaha Motor Co. Ltd, with a holding of just over 12%. Another key shareholder in Yamaha is Toyota, with just under 5% equity in the company. Note, then, that there are in essence two Yamahas and, in terms of branding, trademarking and corporate/visual identity, some

people have been known to become easily confused - and this confusion, regarded as a minor gaffe by outsiders, is something that tends to somewhat irritate the Japanese. The confusion arises over the fact that whilst the core, common Yamaha logo - of both entities - is of three overlaid tuning forks (used for tuning musical instruments) and an outer ring encircling the tips of the crossedover tuning forks, this is where the similarity ends. In the logo for Yamaha Corporation, the tips of the tuning forks do not touch the radius of the circle, whilst in the Yamaha Motor logo, they do. In addition, in the Yamaha Corporation logo, the middle stalk of the “M” is shorter than the outside legs whilst, in the Yamaha Motor logo, the centre stalk of the “M” is of the same length as the two outer legs. Lastly, while the Yamaha Corporation logo is always presented in a 2D

format in either black or violet, the Yamaha Motor logo is red (although it used to be blue for both motocross and marine) and presented in 3D, with a “chiaroscuro” (light and shade) effect. To convey the importance of what you may consider a wholly ridiculous and unnecessary diversion, I can only tell you about the time –several years ago – when I was the Sales and Marketing Manager for Yamaha. I always prided myself on my innovative, exciting and unique summer promotions, and one year I commissioned a water-sports manufacturer to make me some Yamaha-branded tow rings to give away in a sales campaign. Well, the exceptionally eager vendor duly and diligently made the tow rings and had them with me in record time – all sporting the wrong Yamaha logo! The poor bugger had to trash them all…

First Outboard Offerings

In a previous article, I touched on the first time I ever came face-to-face with a Yamaha outboard – which, you may recall, was being offered by the seller of a second-hand boat who was highly embarrassed that he was including it in place of a Johnson (a “proper” outboard, he said!) which had fallen into the water and subsequently seized. The Yamaha motor in question was a single-cylinder, air-cooled 1960 P7A, which, at the time of being offered for sale to me and my father, was already 13 years old. Whilst undoubtedly crude, noisy and “thrashy”, it just ran and ran – nothing could kill it. I eventually sold it to a highly active and resourceful salmon poacher who was only apprehended

Nevertheless, be under no illusions: from humble and rudimentary beginnings, Yamaha was eventually to build what was to become an immensely viable, successful and profitable business unit on the back of the 7hp P7A and then with other single-cylinder, air-cooled motors that bore the cubic-capacity designation rather than the horsepower rating. There was the P65A (3.5hp), the P95A (5hp), then the P125A (a revised 8hp successor to the P7A). One still runs across these engines or their derivatives today – in fact, I saw a mint 1977 5B (an air-cooled successor to the P95A) on a freshwater lake near Vasteras, Sweden, a few years ago. I firmly believe that it slowly began to become clear to the Americans that Japanese outboards – Yamahas in particular – would eventually be a threat, rather than amusing, rattly, half-baked curios when Yamaha’s first water-cooled twin-cylinder outboards were introduced in the early 1970s. The P200A and P250A (12 and 15hp) were followed by the P450A (25hp) in 1971. Suddenly, Yamaha was now in territory – particularly commercialusage applications – that had previously been the sole domain of OMC (Johnson and Evinrude).

Yamaha was to further develop the 25hp into the 28A (larger capacity and thru-prop exhaust), and this engine would emphatically and resoundingly trounce any old 33hp OMCs (and there were still plenty of those running around in the mid-1970s). Then, with the introduction of the 55A for the 1975 model year, it was abundantly and starkly clear to everyone (except perhaps those in charge at OMC) that Yamaha was resolutely serious about being a mainstream player in as many horsepower segments as possible. However, it’s not as if the appearance of Yamaha’s earlier outboards was transient or fleeting. In 1978, the company introduced the then largestto-date Japanese outboard (just beating the Suzuki DT85 by a matter of months): the 3-cylinder 85A (same bore and stroke as the twin-cylinder 55A but with an extra cylinder). This engine would spawn many derivatives, such as the 75A, 80A and 90A, all sold concurrently over the years in various markets. Indeed, even today, in the second half of 2018, it is still possible to buy several versions of this venerable, time-proven engine. That makes a constant, unbroken production run of 40 years for one model – surely a record no other manufacturer will ever match.

70 PACIFIC POWERBOAT SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018

The Mariner Years At the end of the late 1970s, the only outboard brand in the United States market that was recognisably Japanese was Suzuki – which went for a “soft”, nofanfare official introduction after their outboards had been selling under the rather insipid “Spirit” name for several years. However, at that time, despite Yamaha having not yet officially entered the US market, it was actually possible to buy one there, even though that was not the name on the cowling. In the early 1970s, OMC had over 30% of the world market with their two brands, and Mercury was losing market share rapidly. To hit back, they, too, needed a second brand, and so began negotiations with Yamaha for supply of several models on an OEM basis. Thus was born the Mariner brand – a full range of engines, initially from 2 to 115hp. The lion’s share of models, from 2-60hp, would be Yamahas and only the two largest engines (at the time) would be Mercury’s own 85 and 115hp units. The pilot launch for the

new Mariner brand was in Australia in 1974, with the US and Europe following two years later. Many putative experts have suggested that Yamaha benefited most from the alliance with Mercury, as the tie-up supposedly introduced the Japanese to the world of high-HP outboards and taught them much about things such as metallurgy and corrosion resistance etc. I would strongly dispute this theory, and would suggest the obverse, as Japanese-type influence was all too apparent on the loopcharged, auto-lube 3-cylinder engines (initially the 70/80/90hp models) Mercury began to produce in the late 1980s. In relation to the US market, however, I also firmly believe that, in 1983, Yamaha outboards would never have been so enthusiastically accepted under their own brand name upon their official introduction there, had many of the models (albeit older generation by then) not previously been available from Mariner dealerships.

The last Yamaha-supplied Mariners were still filtering through dealerships up until 1992, when Mercury began painting more of their own motors in Mariner livery and then eventually collaborating with Tohatsu for the smaller-HP models. However, even today, particularly in Europe, the Sanshin-produced Mariners still command great affection and respect, and used ones are much cherished by small-boat owners on a budget. For years in the UK, the “go-to” (in fact, mandated) engines for the RNLI’s inshore (inflatable) lifeboats were the Mariner versions of, firstly, the Yamaha E40J and then the E40X, and many budget-conscious inflatable or RIB owners bought these at clearance auctions convinced they were more dependable and robust than their Yamaha siblings! Most people will know that Yamaha and Mercury have had a couple of collaborative ventures. While the most recent one (Yamaha’s supply of midhigh HP 4-stroke power heads until Mercury built their own) probably

The 1983 introduction of the first V6 outboards was a significant milestone for Yamaha

ended up more unpleasantly and acrimoniously than both parties would have liked, there is no doubt that the early Mariner years were a rewarding, successful and halcyon era for both companies. I do think, though, that although Mercury’s owners, Brunswick, benefited hugely from the Mariner arrangement in terms of increased market share, Yamaha, in the long term, got more out of it. After all, they did go from bit player to world leader in a relatively short period.

SPOTLIGHT ON YAMAHA

1980s to the Present I have dealt with technology and the introduction of key, innovative models by Yamaha (and other manufacturers) in previous articles and do not really wish to revisit and regurgitate such material here – it would not be fair to you, the reader, for a start. Whilst technology, nous, creativity and innovation are crucially important (after all, where would any engineering company be without these basic tenets?), I believe it might be a little bit more insightful if I persist on the “genealogy”-type tack for a little longer. It is a given that Yamaha’s technology has lifted it to an exalted position of world leadership and, had it not researched, developed and refined the products that people wanted to buy, it simply wouldn’t be where it is today. That said, however, it must be borne in mind that three seminal events probably launched Yamaha on its introduction to the soaring trajectory it has enjoyed for the last four decades. The first event was the launch of the V4 models (originally 115/140hp) in 1981; the second was the launch of the Yamaha brand in its own right in the US market in 1983, and the third was the introduction, also in 1983, of the V6 outboards. This relatively compressed, 3-year period at the start of the 1980s was undoubtedly a crucial and epochmaking time for Yamaha, as it rapidly became a mainstream, full-line-up brand and a formidable competitor. In 1984, Yamaha introduced its firstever 4-stroke outboard, the F9.9A and, although Yamaha has always continued to make conventional 2-strokes for as long as emissions legislations permit, there was a flurry of 4-stroke introductions throughout the 1990s – the F25A, F50A and, F80/100A, to name but a few. By the end of 1999, Yamaha had introduced what was then its largest lean-emission engine, the 4-stroke F115A but, in the absence of larger 4-strokes at that time, they expediently introduced the 2-stroke HPDI (High Pressure Direct Injection) range of V6s, from 150-200hp. While these engines were undoubtedly a pragmatic step for Yamaha before they could

develop a 4-stroke range, they were far from being a half-hearted stopgap. Although the later, larger series of HPDIs – namely the 3.3litre 250/300hp motors – could hardly be given a glowing endorsement as a paradigm of durability or reliability, the 2.6 litre models almost certainly rank as some of the best motors ever made by Yamaha, or indeed any other manufacturer. The consolidation of Yamaha’s hold on the 4-stroke market truly began in 2001 with the introduction of the first V6 F200/225A models and the midrange F60, followed by the F250A in 2004. Since then, they have plugged any gaps in the horsepower line-up, now with a complete, comprehensive range of 4-strokes outboards from 2-350hp. In latter years, two of the most significant engines they have introduced have been the F350A (the first 4-stroke V8 outboard, but maybe not an overly resounding success in terms of niggling product issues) and the svelte, diminutive F70A – which is within 10kg of the venerable 2-stroke it replaced. Additionally, by the time you read this, Yamaha will have introduced the largest ever outboard by a mainstream manufacturer: a 5.6 litre V8 with direct fuel injection (a first for any outboard manufacturer) and an output of 425hp.

72 PACIFIC POWERBOAT SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018

Simply and starkly put, and honestly not indicative of any bias or favouritism, it is a fact that, of all the manufacturers, Yamaha is by far the most committed and proactive in relation to service campaigns – especially in underdeveloped regions or less affluent markets where outboards are tools of trade and relied upon for one’s livelihood. As outlined before in my previous piece on the rise of Japanese outboards, I believe that Yamaha has always been ahead of everyone when it comes to securing, building and consolidating market share in less developed nations. It has its own internal organisation, OMDO (Oversea Market Development Operations), to service such markets, and OMDO people – from the sales, service and product quality divisions respectively – are always in the field working with some of the smaller, less sophisticated and tech-savvy distributors in these markets. Yamaha’s standing in South Pacific nations like Fiji, PNG, the Solomon Islands, Samoa and Tonga goes way beyond market dominance – it is a virtual hegemony, where, in many of the small nations, the collective numbers of all other brands do not come anywhere close to Yamaha’s volume. There is a reason for this: the implacable trust and confidence placed in the brand – particularly the venerable 2-stroke Enduro models. Not for nothing is the E40X Enduro model known as the “Hi Lux of the sea” in Fiji. As a proactive and professional manufacturer, Yamaha regularly “takes the show on the road” by going to distributors’ mechanics in these developing nations, rather than having distributor staff go to Japan. are a remarkable sight, with a surging armada of boats steaming ashore in the morning for engine checks and servicing. Furthermore, as a redoubt of the true engineering purist, Yamaha makes it a priority to know that mechanics understand what they are doing and how to use tools and diagnostic equipment correctly. I remember observing mechanics at a training course at the OMDO facility in Japan and the Yamaha instructors made sure that the trainees were

able to read a conventional, slidetype Vernier caliper gauge. A modern digital one (the use of which would be permitted by other engine companies) would have been easier to use, and maybe even more accurate, but that was not the point – the point was that the technician had to know how he arrived at that particular measurement. Finally, bearing in mind the old adage about exceptional service followthrough assuring even greater future sales, I honestly cannot see Yamaha’s market dominance evaporating anytime soon. There are maybe two competitors, both of them now with cutting-edge new product, who, if absolutely determined, focused, resolute and resilient, could possibly cause Yamaha a few headaches. This, however, is a theoretical premise we can examine another time.

This page clockwise: Inherent in the X-Series bloodline is the company’s racedriven performance prowess. Cocktails anyone! The fact that you can get four large cabins into a 60 footer is impressive. A beach club on a superyacht is commonplace but almost unheard of on a 60 footer.

I

f there had been an award for Boat of the Show at the recent Sanctuary Cove Boat Show, I would have given it to the Maritimo X60. The response to the boat, both from the industry and those attending the show was exceptional. It was an inspiring recognition for Tom Barry-Cotter, the chief designer behind the X-Series programme. Son of Maritimo founder, Bill Barry-Cotter, Tom has recently taken a more active position in the business and while initially coming on board to head the X-Series programme, his role has been expanded to also included full-time marketing and sales. With father Bill taking a less public role, although still very much involved with the business, Tom is undoubtedly being groomed as the ‘new’ face of Maritimo. A beach club on a superyacht is commonplace but almost unheard of on a 60 footer. Maritimo has nailed it with their beach club option, which is the piece-deresistance of the X60. The beach club sets the X60 - and the soon to be released X50 - apart from its competitors, with the versatile aft cabin space enabling a high level of customisation for owners to cater the space to their specific requirements. This spacious area allows an additional cabin accessible from the saloon and swim platform, that can be arranged as a beach club, additional stateroom, tender garage, euro galley

78 PACIFIC POWERBOAT SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018

and other custom options. What is traditional taken up with an engine room, or mechanical and engineering equipment has been transformed into 4m of extra space. In a boat of less than 20m that’s a huge bonus and now provides the accommodation space of 25m. “The additional aft cabin is completely unique and is resonating with buyers within the sports yacht market. The ability to add extra accommodation space that is similar in size to an additional master cabin in terms of volume, is clearly something special”, says Tom. In fact, the whole boat was initially designed around the aft cabin feature and involved some seriously complex engineering, getting the balance and structure perfect. The X60 is very much a superyacht that has been shrunk down.

RACE BRED Inherent in the X-Series bloodline is the company’s race-driven performance prowess. With a complete new efficient shaft-driven hull and driveline design, the X60 has been tested at speeds up to 34 knots with 925hp Scania power. Other power packages include a pair of Scania D13 @ 800hp or the Volvo Penta D13 @ 800hp or Volvo Penta D13 @ 1000hp. Tom says that they have

had some enquiry for even more horsepower from potential owners that are looking for speeds more than 40 knots. He is quite confident that a pair of 1200hp engines would be suitable. Hull efficiency within the cruising speed range was a significant focus of the hull and driveline design and the X60 has the best efficiency numbers of all Maritimos. At 2000 rpm @ 27.9 knots, the X60 recorded 250 lph for a range based on 90% fuel capacity of 420 nm. I found around 18-22 knots was an ideal cruise range for the X60 and returned a range of about 450nm. If you are towing lures, then you could drag them for over 2000nm before running out of fuel. One of the most noticeable things when the boat transitions from idle to plane, is just how flat it remains with no noticeable bow lift. The variable deadrise hull design with deep-v bow entry, also offers a soft dry ride, while weight distribution within the hull design allows for a low running attitude throughout the RPM range. It is a wellbalanced boat that is effortless and very cool to drive. We were on the plane at 10-12 knots and with no tabs! You can sit at the helm and not have your visibility forward obscured by the bow lifting over the horizon. Plus, the acceleration from zero to maximum speed, in our case around 33 knots was amazing. I can see where the race-bred technology has come from. Marina manoeuvering is made very easy with the Twin Disc EJS joystick systems. The X60 is fitted with Twin Disk Quickshift transmissions, EC 300 Electronic Control System, Express Joystick and has the option of being equipped with Express Positioning System technology which enables precise and continuous position and heading hold.

VENTILATION & LIGHT Much as the aft cabin defined the rest of the hull, so too did the panoramic side windows which open an impressive 2.8m each side of the saloon. How the rest of the deck and hardtop was styled was determined by the massive sliding side windows which cascade aft and intensify the brightness, natural air flow and lightness of the saloon area.

This is an awesome feature of the boat and one that was mentioned as much as the beach club by visitors looking over the boat at SCIBS. But wait there’s more! While most sedan cruisers have a forward sunroof, in the X60 there’s two, with the addition of a separate sunroof over the galley. “We felt that a rear sunroof gave us the ability to light up the rear of the saloon and especially in the galley, where solid side panelling tends to shade this essential space”, says Tom. The saloon layout is traditional with an aft galley to port, with island counter, forward U shape settee and dinette area, with the helm and the second lounger to starboard. Twin helm chairs are standard and you have the choice of a variety of displays and electronics. I especially liked the new reconfigured dash which can take twin 22” MFDs, plus separate recess for the engine management displays. All controls are within reach and the screens in perfect eye line. Outstanding.

MULTI CABINS The fact that you can get four large cabins into a 60 footer is impressive, but it doesn’t stop there. You have a multi-choice when it comes to the accommodation with different layout configurations that maximise the space available. Depending on how many beds you want aboard, you can have up to four cabins, or as little as two. If you go for the beach club or tender garage aft, then you can still have the standard three cabins, with a full-width master, forward VIP and port side guest cabin. However, you can just go for two massive forward cabins with en-suites and go for the Regency option which gives you get a third cabin aft. Plenty of choices to suit your needs.

SUMMARY Development has also commenced on the next model within the X-Series Range, a Maritimo X50 - which the company is closely guarding until its introduction at Sydney International Boat Show with its world premiere scheduled for 2019. The X60 is Maritimo’s first serious foray into the luxury sports yacht market and has been designed to give them a competitive edge in a very

Maritimo is entirely different from a lot of production boat builders, as they offer a full customisation service so the standard layout can be altered throughout the boat, something that most large production boat builders will not do. “We wanted to come out of the gate firing and we reckon we have achieved it with the X60. Some of the world’s leading sports car manufacturers are challenging the marine industry with radical new concepts in boating.

WWW.BOAT M AGS.C O M 83

In recent times, some of the world’s most iconic automotive brands have been quietly dipping their metaphorical toes into the areas of boat design and construction. And we’re not talking Hyundai or Daihatsu here. Prestigious marques such as Bugatti, Aston Martin, Mercedes-Benz, AMG and Lexus have turned their attention to the marine world as they seek to expand their brand reach and awareness. The exclusively high-end companies have sought collaborations within the marine industry, pairing with prestigious boat designers and manufacturers to transplant their own brand values and signature design cues into hulls, decks and interiors. And the results are stunning. While some are clearly design exercises or prototypes, most are either in production or not far off being launched. But one thing all have in common is that they boldly go where few, if any, conventional boat builders have dared to tread. Intended exclusively for the well-heeled, who are just as likely to have a flagship superyacht in their fleet of nautical playthings, these craft, nevertheless, push the boundaries in form and function and all share a common emphasis on performance. Materials are invariably space age when it comes to hulls and decks, with exotic composites par for the course, while interiors tend to reflect the cabins of their road-going siblings, with lush upholstery, extensive high-end electronics and exotic designer touches. Ultimately, these boats are all about making personal statements and being noticed. Nobody buys a MercedesAMG Cigarette Marauder SS to unobtrusively putter off for a picnic in a secluded bay. Anglers will be hard-pressed to uncover a rodholder or livebait tank on any of these vessels and those with a taste for long-range cruising and all the practical necessities that go with it are likely to view these thoroughbreds with scorn. But there’s no denying that all of these creations are at the absolute edge of current marine design – with one or two arguably plunging over the precipice altogether. And so we begin our troll through the halls of boating exotica with a look at the latest effort from the world’s biggest car maker …

84 PACIFIC POWERBOAT SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018

LEXUS NEXUS

For more than 20 years, the world’s largest car builder has also been in the business of making boats, albeit exclusively for its Japanese market. Toyota’s Ponam range of mid-sized cruisers includes 28-, 31- and 35-footers, with construction materials including aluminium, fibreglass and high-tech composites, while it has also recently added a new hybrid variant. The company draws on its automotive products for powerplants and, while overall sales of its fleet are modest in comparison to its global domination of the automotive sector it, nevertheless, sells enough boats to maintain a small, yet profitable production quota. More recently, the company’s luxury arm, Lexus, has shown off its own marine credentials with a sleek open day cruiser prototype dubbed the Lexus Sports Yacht. The inspiration for the stylish cruiser came right from the top, with Toyota’s President, Akio Toyoda, tasking Lexus’s top designers with the job of designing a striking new boat that would reflect the brand’s core DNA. An experienced boatie himself, Toyoda’s challenge to his marine colleagues was to create an open sports craft that could carry up to eight guests in style. And it also had to be a sharp performer. A collaboration between Lexus, the Toyota Marine Department and the US Marquis-Carver Yacht Group, which actually built the prototype, the 42ft Lexus Sport Yacht was unveiled to the public in Miami in January, 2017. It draws on the automotive department for its twin high-performance Lexus 5lt V8 engines, delivering a combined 880hp for a respectable top speed of around 50mph (93km/h). Power passes through a conventional twin sterndrive. Naturally, the skipper has a joystick controller at his disposal, along with all the latest and greatest electronic aids, with some touches borrowed from the car brand,

such as a single central touchscreen, which connects with all the main functions, including GPS, sonar, radar, lighting and entertainment systems. The centrally placed skipper’s chair incorporates ‘jump seats’ that fold down either side. “This concept for a Lexus Sport Yacht allowed us to explore how Lexus design language could be applied to a maritime lifestyle,” said Yoshihiro Sawa, Executive VP of Lexus International. “For the Lexus Design Centre, this project has been very exciting. The effort is valuable to us as it stirs our creative energies and pushes our imagination to design and lifestyle possibilities outside of the automotive realm we know well.” The forward cabin is Lexus-like, with plenty of leather,

polished timber and glass highlights, and includes all the creature comforts and features you’d expect to find in a quality dayboat. No surprise that the Sport Yacht boasts exotic composites in its construction, employing carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) in much of its hull, bulwarks and decking, as used in the company’s 325km/h road-going LFA supercar. The result is an impressively light boat – claimed to weigh nearly 1000kg less than an equivalent fibreglass craft – with a hull design intended to reduce drag and improve balance at higher speeds. It’s a sleek craft that would be right at home cruising the high spots of Monaco or Miami. There has been no announcement yet regarding production plans.

For those who believe there is no such thing as too much power or speed, we present the Mercedes-AMG Cigarette Racing Marauder SS. To celebrate their 10-year collaboration building high performance boats paired with equally exotic road cars, Mercedes-AMG and Cigarette Racing unleashed the 50ft Marauder SS at the 2017 Miami International Boat Show. Inspired by the ferociously fast Mercedes-AMG GT R sports car, the intimidatingly named Marauder lives up to its name, with a pair of Godzilla-like, 9lt Mercury Racing QC4v (Quad Cam 4 Valve) V8s that between them deliver 3100hp to the M8 racing drives. Enhancing the Marauder’s performance credentials, the needle-sharp hull and sleek deck lines are smoothed out for improved aerodynamics, while the engine hatch has been redesigned to ensure adequately stupendous amounts of atmosphere are delivered to the twin-turbo engines. Light weight and strength were priorities, so carbon fibre was used liberally in the construction, with more than 590kg shed from the Marauder’s production-spec base model. In addition, the deck, cockpit and consoles employ advanced laminates and vacuum infusion technology to reduce weight, ensure adherence to design specifications and maximise performance. 86 PACIFIC POWERBOAT SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018

Speaking of which, top speed is rumoured to be around warp factor 135 – as in mph – or 217km/h, while the price tag is said to be substantially north of US$1m. “Performance, perfection and passion are the values that unite Mercedes-AMG and Cigarette Racing. Based on these values, eight sensational special editions have been created during our successful 10 years of collaboration, and the 2017 50ft Marauder AMG presented here is a particular highlight among these,” said Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes AMG. “It is an extremely proud moment to celebrate 10 years of working together and demonstrate the strength of our collaboration with Mercedes-AMG by unveiling our most impressive high-performance boat yet,” said Skip Braver, CEO of Cigarette Racing.

BRIT CHIC Quintessentially British marque Aston Martin raised a few manicured eyebrows when it took the wraps off its radically styled AM37 powerboat at the 2016 Monaco Yacht Show. Developed in partnership with Netherlands-based Quintessence Yachts and Mulder Design, the 37ft waterborne Aston Martin is offered in two versions, with the highperformance AM37S version capable of 50 knots (93km/h). The result of two years of research and development, the sleek day cruiser is intended to encapsulate the design and brand values of the high-performance sports car maker. Aston Martin’s EVP and Chief Creative Officer, Marek Reichman, commented: “The AM37 is a pure translation of the Aston Martin DNA into an entirely new maritime concept. The powerboat reflects our values in terms of power, beauty and soul. “It was important to us to make sure that the boat design was as beautiful and timeless as our cars. The AM37 is a striking boat with fantastic proportion and elegance.” Designed to accommodate up to eight people, the AM37 is a day cruiser that can be transformed into an overnighter, with a suitably well-appointed cabin with all the luxury fittings, including the finest leathers, woodgrains and metal highlights. Elegance and simplicity were at the core of the design brief, exemplified in the wraparound windscreen that was created from a single piece of sculpted glass shaped to hug the AM37’s foredeck.

The enclosed central cockpit is exposed to the daylight at the push of a button, with three lightweight carbon panels folding under the aft deck. An electro-hydraulic carbon fibre bimini top is stowed under the engine hatch when not in use and, extending from the aft deck, a swim platform allows for easy access to the water. The AM37’s carbon fibre helm echoes styling elements from Aston Martin’s most advanced sports cars, including liberal use of fine leather, while navigation, boat and entertainment systems are all integrated with advanced multimedia functions. The base – if that term can be applied to a boat like the AM37 – model is powered by a pair of 370hp Mercury diesels or twin 430hp Mercury petrol engines, while the flagship AM37S boasts twin 520hp Mercury petrol engines. No lightweight, Aston Martin’s 37-footer tips the scales at 6.7 tonnes, with an equally hefty price tag in excess of US$2.1m for the AM37S.

BUGATTI BOUTIQUE

A boat inspired by legendary automotive brand Bugatti. In March, 2017, the makers of the world’s most powerful, fastest, most exclusive and luxurious production super sports car (and that’s just in their own words), Bugatti, stood shoulder to shoulder with representatives of renown US motor yacht builder Palmer Johnson to announce the release of the limited edition Bugatti Niniette 66. A bespoke stratospherically premium cruiser, intended as the nautical equivalent of its 420km/h Chiron supercar, it positively reeks of innovation, including the use of MJP waterjet drives hooked up to either 1000 or 1200hp MAN engines. And that’s not to mention the Jacuzzi and fire pit … The 20m craft features an innovative hull design, combining a slender main hull with two outrigger sponsons that contribute to stability and roll dampening, even at high speeds, says Bugatti. Capable of 44 knots (81km/h), and – better yet – with a shallow draft of just 83cm, keen anglers will note the Niniette is ideal for chasing flathead into the tidal flats … The skipper and open bridge visitors will enjoy a futuristic command centre with an interactive infotainment system for vessel navigation, systems monitoring, control and entertainment. “This construction also allows for a wider build compared to other yachts in this class, thus offering the experience of a much larger yacht,” says Palmer Johnson CEO Timur Mohamed. The extensive use of carbon fibre also adds to the yacht’s structural rigidity, while at the same time reducing weight and increasing hull efficiency. Bugatti, which actually built boats way back when, says the Niniette is the first of a new series of luxury yachts spanning 50 to 88ft. Borrowing its name from a one-of-a-kind speedboat built in 1930 for one Prince Carlo Maurizio Ruspoldi, company founder Ettore Bugatti named the low-on-the-water beauty Niniette – the pet name of his youngest daughter, Lidia. With boldly sweeping lines unmistakeably drawn from its 88 PACIFIC POWERBOAT SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018

exclusive range of supercars, the Niniette 66 oozes style from every pore of its carbon fibre hull. Early in the design process, Bugatti sought input from current car owners, which saw many Chiron themes woven into the final product. “The Niniette is a genuine member of the Bugatti family,” explains Etienne Salomé, Design Director at Bugatti. Staying true to the company’s guiding design principle of ‘form follows performance’, the clear lines and dynamic stance of the yacht fuse with the characteristic Bugatti side profile. “Even from a large distance when entering a port, the Niniette will always be recognised as a true Bugatti,” says Salomé. A spacious open deck is a showcase for quality materials, including precision finished carbon fibre, the finest possible leather from the most well-bred cows, marble and naturally blue morta oak wood. With room for 12, most won’t be spending too much time outdoors, given that the lower deck is home to a combined Jacuzzi/sunpad/champagne bar. And what self-respecting megayacht would be complete without its very own fire pit for those chilly nights sipping champers off the Antarctic Ice Shelf. Centrepiece of the futuristic interior saloon is the large Bugatti horseshoe-shaped lounge, while natural light streams in through the macaron-shaped window in the ceiling. And as for the price? Bugatti won’t say, but it’s the old story – if you have to ask, you probably aren’t even in the running. Better get in quick though … they’re only making 66.

SILVER SERVICE

With an emphasis on luxury and style rather than outright performance, Mercedes-AMG has once again dipped a toe in the water with the 2016 unveiling of its elegant Arrow460 Granturismo, a collaboration between UK shipyard Silver Arrows Marine and Mercedes-Benz Style, with input from naval architect Martin Francis, designer Tommaso Spadolini and Van Oossanen Naval Architects. Not known for rushing into things, the gestation period for Mercedes-Benz’s S Class for the Sea was almost eight years, before it finally got its hull wet. Design was handled by the Advanced Design Centre for Mercedes-Benz Style, located appropriately on Italy’s playground for the stupendously wealthy and surgicallyenhanced, Lake Como. Drawing heavily on design cues from Mercedes’s legendary Silver Arrows racing cars of the 1930s, and including the iconic 1954 gull-wing 300 SL, the Arrow460-Granturismo very much embodies the granturismo concept of travelling in style and comfort.

While performance wasn’t an overriding priority, twin 880hp diesels still propel the GT to a not-too-shabby 38 knots (70km/h). The interior has an almost ‘concept car’ feel to it and is clearly designed to pamper – and occasionally surprise – its up to 10 occupants, with a bed and dining table seemingly appearing from nowhere in the open-plan saloon, depending on the prevailing mood or occasion. Generous use of Alcantara and mesh fabric materials and a pop-up sunroof add to the automotive sensation of the interior spaces, which include a large shower, for which electronically dimming glass guarantees privacy. The first 10 units sold incorporate a few extras, including a premium audio system, ice-maker and … wine cellar. “This new motor yacht, with its emotional and high-tech features, embodies our Mercedes-Benz design philosophy of sensual purity and is a perfect expression of modern luxury,” waxed Mercedes-Benz’s Gorden Wagener. A cool AU$3.5m will see you in your own Arrow460 Granturismo, which probably ensures you’ll get a bit of exclusivity to go with your wine cellar. Swan off to: silverarrowsmarine.com.

OCEAN ALEXANDER 85 MOTOR YACHT

Classic

Contemporary 90 PACIFIC POWERBOAT SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018

Review by boattest.com

The OA 85 Motor Yacht combines classic semidisplacement, seaworthy hull design with contemporary style.

ONE OF THE BIGGEST BOATS AT THIS YEAR’S SCIBS WAS THE OCEAN ALEXANDER 85 MOTOR YACHT, A STUNNING FOUR STATEROOM MINI SUPERYACHT THAT DEFINES THE BUILDERS ABILITY TO PRODUCE VESSELS THAT EXCEED EXPECTATIONS.

T

he Ocean Alexander 85 Motor Yacht cues its styling from the 112 and 120 motor yachts in the builder’s collection. This all new design, four stateroom yacht, has an interior decor in keeping with that of the finest of luxury yachts, while holding true to Ocean Alexander’s heritage of rugged sea-going capabilities. With wide open layouts and large windows that give her a contemporary feel and look, she can serve as either an owner-operator or crewed vessel. The oversized fly bridge is planned and engineered to provide maximum functionality for entertaining

both family and friends, and with her four stateroom en-suite configuration, she optimises her size, where she to be put into charter. The Ocean Alexander 85 Motor Yacht weighs in at just under 84 tons, with a maximum draft of 1.80m. From entry into the main saloon, the sight line extends through the yacht out to the bow, providing a feeling of expanse and openness. Capable of sleeping up to eight guests plus two crew members, the 85 Motor Yacht is a logical choice for an owner who seeks a yacht suited for weekend and extended cruising, “fly-in” capability, and the flexibility to charter.

MISSION STATEMENT By its very design, the mission of the Ocean Alexander 85 Motor Yacht is simple: to create as much useable space for enjoyment through efficient engineering and detailed ergonomic design, right down to the function and livability of the crew quarters. In this regard, the flying bridge is certainly no exception, providing a large entertaining space where more than two dozen could gather comfortably. Clean, yet functional, the fly bridge of the 85 Motor Yacht is its central gathering space, where entertaining is its focus. With its day galley and wet bar, flip down 32” TV and A/V system, guests, family

and friends will gravitate to the fly bridge. The bar has five fixed stools and a granite surface countertop. A 795kg. hydraulic davit raises and lowers a 4m tender which is secured in the aft section of the bridge – a location that we call the “boat deck.” When the tender is launched, and the deck chocks removed, this space can serve double-duty as a place for folding chaise lounges for sunning and reading. At night it can add space for a large cocktail party. The helm station on the fly bridge is located on the center line and has two Stidd helm seats, with an armrest control at the captain’s chair which is linked to the Garmin Navigation package, and twin multifunction displays. An option offered by Ocean Alexander for the 85 Motor Yacht is to enclose the fly bridge, creating a sky lounge. With this option, a day head is added along with double opening aft bullhead stainless doors to open the space. Some owners like this option because it creates a large inside living space without a commensurate increase in price. Others prefer to have an open-air fly bridge with the option of buttoning it up with isinglass when desired.

SOLID BUILD The 85 Motor Yacht’s hull is vacuum-infused to ensure a high-glass to resin lamination ratio. A reinforced collision bulkhead forward is made of cross-knit directional carbon fibre in high-stress areas 92 PACIFIC POWERBOAT SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018

for added structural integrity and torsional strength. This is unusual in boats of this size. Marine-grade aluminum beams are utilised in the decking sub structure, bulkheads and overheads, providing greater rigidity and a more monolithic structure. This helps to prevent hull racking and warping while underway in challenging sea conditions, further eliminating the “creaking” sounds heard all too often on yachts which do not employ this technique. It is important for consumers to understand that the Ocean Alexander 85 is built to highly regarded standards set down by the ABYC, ABS, Norske Veritas, in addition to meeting CE standards.

AWESOME AFT DECK The stern platform provides ample room for the loading and staging of luggage, gear and supplies. It also becomes a “mini marina” when friends come over by tender to attend a cocktail party or dinner. The upside down “U”-shaped stainless steel safety rails are a stylish way to keep guest aboard during cocktail parties and when casually fishing off the stern when at anchor. The aft deck is accessed from the curved staircases to both port and starboard. Courtesy lights illuminating the treads make footing sure at night. A granite counter topped wet bar with a sink, refrigerator, and icemaker, is incorporated into the aft deck to make this the primary social area in the

evening when not entertaining a large group. The transom dining settee has a teak table, where seating for an additional four can be added. Since the flying bridge extends to the transom, the space is completely covered and a flip down 32” LCD television is located in the overhead. The whole aft deck can be enclosed in isinglass to create a cozy sun room in cool weather. To starboard are throttle and thruster controls for manoeuvering and docking which should make it easier for an owner/operator. Port and starboard are large cleats with warping winches on platform that make line handling a pleasure for family and friends, if need be. The stainless steel rails which begin at the stern, continue the length of 85 Motor Yacht above the cap rail to the bow. On the foredeck is a twin sun pad with SS rails on either side.

SALOON AND DINING The sliding glass doors with polished stainless steel frames from the aft cockpit into the saloon offer a push button open control. The enlarged windows in the saloon are custom engineered to incorporate marine grade aluminium beams allowing for industry leading window expanse. Furniture is not built in, which signals both elegance and comfort. Below the cushions are storage compartments. Air conditioning ducts are located on the bottom of stylish overhead cornices which also contain indirect lighting. All cabinetry in the salon and dining area is matched-booked walnut. Countertops and side boards have in-laid granite tops. It is important to note that joiner work, carpet and countertops are all up to the owner, as is the furniture and much else in the Ocean Alexander 85 Motor Yacht. A narrow cabinet separated the saloon from the dining area. The eight-person formal dining table is athwartships on the starboard side. Again the emphasis is on plenty of room. Even on 85-footers some designs have a hard time fitting such a large table into the living space without compromises. In keeping with the formal dining area, the galley is hidden behind a bulkhead which separates the two areas. This is a traditional arrangement on a motor yacht of this size. If wanted, a pocket door could even be inserted here, in order to separate the sounds and smells from the galley even more, if desired. What is not so traditional about this galley layout was the forward side of the galley which is open forward to a dinette, creating what is a country kitchen effect. Granite countertops and marble flooring appoint the rich detailed finish of the cabinetry, which includes the storage and overhanging cabinets, and overhead dish locker forward. The helm of the 85 Motor Yacht is located to port of the centerline. A single Stidd mechanical captain’s chair is placed in front of leather wrapped destroyer wheel and the helm contains a navigation package comprised of literally every electronic device of vessel of this size should have and many more than we have seen on some commercial vessels of twice the size. Visibility from the helm is sweeping with unimpeded sight lines over the bow through the tempered, five panel windshield, each glass having its own wiper and washer.

FOUR CABINS & FOUR ENSUITES Access to the accommodation deck is via the lit staircase situated on the centreline, to the right of the helm station. Proceeding down the staircase and turning aft, beyond the two guest staterooms, the passageway leads to the master stateroom. There is a storage closet beneath the staircase and washer and dryer forward and to starboard. The master stateroom on the 85 Motor Yacht is huge and is full-beam. It enjoys a true king-sized bed flanked by nightstands. A bureau and vanity are installed to starboard with a sofa to port. The windows are custom engineered to incorporate aluminum beams and “sandwiched glass” construction allowing 28% greater visibility and more incoming light, says the builder. The his-and-hers cedar-lined closets are full height with automatic lighting and glass faced lighted drawers.

THE QUINTESSENTIAL KIWI TRIO

SPORT SEDAN REVIVAL KIWI TRIO SHOWS THAT WHEN IT COMES TO POCKET SEDAN CRUISERS, PRODUCTION BOAT BUILDING IN KIWI LAND IS FAR FROM DEAD. RAYGLASS, SUPERIOR AND ADMIRAL ARE THREE BRANDS AT THE FOREFRONT OF THE LOCAL REVIVAL.

T

he GFC hit, the local built small cruiser production market took a sudden and what for many years looked like a permanent nosedive into oblivion. An industry sector that had been so buoyant was decimated, with company closures, moulds sold offshore and others tucked away and left forgotten. The trailer boat builders seemed to come through all the economic downturn and popped out the other end scratched, bruised but still intact. Today the Kiwi trailer boat builders in both fibreglass and alloy are busy, many busier than ever, with record annual sales. So what happened to the Kiwi built sport sedan boats around 10-12m?

Unquestionably New Zealand’s most popular boat in the smaller sedan cruiser market pre-GFC, was the Genesis 3100/3200 and when the company ceased operations and the moulds went to China, there was a huge void in the market. This was a great boat to step up from a big trailer boat and 100s were built, retaining great value on the used boat market and are very popular today. Rayglass had the Legend 4000 (12.5m) and Next Generation Boats kept on building the Corsair (13.5m), but both saw decreasing sales as the economy hardened. In 2009 Rayglass made their last Legend 4000 (#54) and Next Generation moved their moulds to Taiwan. So while local designers such as Bill Upfold filled the gap with

custom designs and the imports, mainly from European brands enjoyed a growing market, little was available in semi-production and nothing in full production form from Kiwi builders. When Next Generation left NZ, it was like someone had turned out the lights and closed the door on this market sector. Well, not so and after a considerable time frame of nothingness, the Kiwi production sports sedan market is back and back with a vengeance. We look at three Kiwi built and designed production pocket sedan cruisers that are showing that there is still a local market for a traditional Kiwi style boat.

RAYGLASS 3500

SALOON

THE LEGEND GROWS

Rayglass Legend 3500 Superior 1050 Sedan

Admiral 10m

F

irst to announce their arrival was Rayglass with their Legend 3500. Released in 2016, the 3500 was an instant success, with sales exceeding expectations to a point where the waiting list for a new boat was more than 18 months. To date over 30 boats have been sold and with revamped production facilities, customers now have less than 12 month lead time. Production is around to 2 boats a month. Scott Little, Sales manager for Rayglass Boats, attributes a lot of that success to the fact they produced a boat that the market wanted. “ The 3500 is an evolution of our customer feedback and where they saw their next step in their boating lifestyle”. With the Rayglass trailerable range finishing with the 2800, it was only natural that the company would offer a replacement for the 4000, but given their owner demographics a boat that would be cruising orientated. The 3500 does all that and more. “The 3500 was primarily designed around the saloon”, says Scott, with the prerequisites being standing and seated helm position, huge lounge, a separate aft galley and as large as possible rear cockpit opening. From there the boat was proportioned accordingly in the forward accommodation spaces and the cockpit/boarding platform area. Another criteria for the length was the boat need to fit into a 12m marina and dry stack. While the 4000 had a larger cockpit and was very much targeted towards the fishing enthusiast, the 3500 is more for your ‘wine & cheese’ owner. In saying that however, there are two different transom arrangements available, one with an island station and the other with a fore and aft folding double rear seat. If you are into your fishing, then the large boarding platform is ideal as a fishing platform, with a rail mounted bait board. The Rayglass 3500 is as close as you will ever get to a full 98 PACIFIC POWERBOAT SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018

production boat. It is primarily built from three main moulds; the hull, the inner liner which includes the deck and the hardtop. This isn’t a boat that you can move galley, seating or accommodation spaces as they are all predetermined due to the mould design. You can, however, personalise your upholstery and equipment and while the standard boat package is already extremely well supplied, there is always other toys you need. The standard boat comes with a Fusion stereo, Side Power bow thruster, Maxwell RC10 windlass, ICOM VHF, Bright Light underwater lights, Lenco trim tabs Garmin 16” MFD and solar panels. Oh yes, let’s not forget the diesel heater as well. The 3500 is a very high spec production build. Standard power has until now been a pair of Mercruiser 260hp TDI through Bravo drives, but this will change with the introduction of the new Mercruiser 270hp 3.0 litre diesel. While the pair of 260s is already good for 33 knots, the 3500 is also available with a pair of Mercruiser 370hp V8s, which cranks the top end speed to around 40 knots plus. The 3500 offers an excellent utilisation of space for a boat of this size and with an efficient layout that suits a broad market. There are two dedicated cabins; the master which runs under the saloon sole and the forward VIP. Both offer large twin berths, copious storage and share the one ensuite/bathroom. With the dining table dropped down you get another double berth to bring the accommodation to six. The saloon is about as big as you can get on a boat of this sport sedan style, with a large starboard helm with a dash big enough for a 16” MFD, L shaped settee with dinette opposite and an aft galley. There’s also a starboard side lounge with storage under. The 3500 has been the single most successful launch by the company and its popularity doesn’t look like tapering off anytime soon.

H

amilton-based, Admiral Boats entered into the sport sedan market in mid-2018 with a very much modified and entirely revamped Steadecraft 28 hull. In fact, there wasn’t much left of the original hull when they popped out their first boat. “We built a new higher deck with more curve, put swage lines in the topsides, moved the saloon door bulkheads back 600mm to increase the cabin living space and built a onepiece inner liner, so the boat is effectively three large moulds; hull inner liner and deck, with lots of small moulds filling all the gaps”, says company director Steve Clement The Admiral 10 is designed around fishing, diving, family boating and overnighting in comfort. “We wanted to try fit as much ‘big boat’ features into an XL trailer boat as possible with the luxury of being able to up and drive it to anywhere we desired”, says Steve. With a beam of 3m, the Admiral is still trailerable with a special permit and of course the appropriately sized tow vehicle. The forward cabin has a v-berth that can convert into a double and a full-width double under the saloon floor. With the port saloon settee used as a berth, there is comfortable sleeping for seven. The bi-fold window and door open the saloon and cockpit up for the one living area. The cockpit has two substantial underfloor lockers either side of the engine room and another four lockers in the coamings. The centre island unit houses the bbq, sink and live bait tank. Power for the first boat was a Volvo Penta D4 260 hp engine with DPH stern leg, with power options being 220-350hp single Volvo Penta packages. Part of the standard package is a pair of Humphree X-Series interceptors, which offer stabilisation at any speed. They are not ordinary trim tabs. The Interceptor system creates a hydrodynamic lift force by intercepting the water flow underneath the hull. In that way,

100 PACIFIC POWERBOAT SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018

Superior 1050 Sedan

the interceptor creates a lift force acting on the hull instead of on the trim-device itself, which is indifference of the regular trim tab. With a complete moulded construction, the opportunities to customise the boat is limited, although items such as upholstery and timbers are owner’s choice. The builders have tried to present the optimum layout for what they feel most people would want in a boat this size and they have indeed achieved that. Perhaps the only significant changes available are in the cockpit, where you can have the choice of a central island with live bait tank, sink and bbq or wrap around seating and single access. A good size platform aft of the transom complete with a central bait station looks after the fishing aspects and you can add removable rails either side if you feel you want some extra security. The Admiral 10 is a two berth one bathroom boat with the aft cabin that is designed under the saloon sole left relatively open to give a spacious feel. The forward cabin has twin single berths below, with an infill to make a significant double and a single above on the starboard side. The saloon is very Kiwi traditional layout with forwarding helm starboard and an aft galley port. In between, there’s side loungers and a dining table, plus further aft an entertainment centre. You have the choice of a single Hi-Tech pedestal seat or a bench seat base with storage under. Opposite is a settee that is long enough to make another berth and the dining table that can be either fixed or drop down. Bi-fold doors divide the cabin and cockpit and when everything is open, it presents a seamless flow through the boat. The cabin top overhang has been adapted for storage of things you often need in the cockpit, such as a net, gaff, boat hook and cleaning gear. Another ingenious use of space.

CHANGING WITH THE MARKET

S

uperior Boats based in the Auckland suburb of Manurewa have been building the Superior 1050 Flybridge for some years and even though the GFC they kept making 3-4 boats a year. However, they knew that if they wanted to move forward they needed to diversify and in so doing have come up with a sports sedan version. Based on the same hull as the 1050 Flybridge, 1050 Sedan #1 was launched mid this year and was sold to a client who keeps the boat in Nelson. “With the change in demand and increasing popularity of the sedan model boats, we decided to recustomise the current hull to suit to the market,” says Sam. While the hull is the same as the 1050 Flybridge, the profile is very different, although still retains a lot of the original and very traditional look of the Superior 1050. The hull is 10.65m overall and slots in between the Rayglass 3500 and the Admiral 10m. It has a displacement of 6000 kgs, some 1500 kgs lighter than the Rayglass and 1200 kgs heavier than the Admiral.

Admiral 10m

In its base form, it is priced from $465,000. It is suitable for dry stacking or marina berthage and ideal for a dry berth. The first 1050 Sedan was in fact ordered by an owner who already had a 1050 Flybridge and while he loved the boat, especially the internal layout, he found he never really used the flybridge area. He also worked closely throughout the project with builder Sam Dorotich, to develop the new sedan and despite a longer than anticipated build period is more than happy with the end result. There are some new features in the Sedan, such as seamless curved glass windows allowing for a clear nonrestricted view, bi-fold doors and lift up glass allow for full connectivity between the saloon and cockpit. There is a new cockpit layout which has an accent on entertaining and the saloon beam is also increased. Overhead there is more light through the glass window, which adds to the expansive feeling you get when aboard. The dash design has also been changed to easily accommodate the

102 PACIFIC POWERBOAT SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018

larger MFDs and all the extra controls and electronics that tend to be added. The saloon layout is conventional with the well setup galley to port, with a dinette forward and a small settee with the removable helm chair opposite. The helm seat can be removed transforming the settee into a small bunk, big enough for a child. There is fixed seating around the dinette for three, but it’s easy enough to bring a fourth place to the table with a loose chair. It’s a few steps down to the accommodation area, with two cabins and a single bathroom. The bathroom has the shower, toilet and vanity combined, plus there are extra light and ventilation from a large port above. The guest cabin provides adequate accommodation for a couple or children, with the cabin offering a sizeable island berth with cupboard and drawer storage as well as significant side shelves. There is some customisation available in the cabins giving you the choice of double or single berths. Superior Boats do allow you the freedom in the build process to specify precisely what you need in a vessel. The Superior 1050 Sedan is available with a 300-400hp single diesel package through a V-drive or twin stern drives. The first 1050 Sedan was powered by a Yanmar 6LY2/370hp which returned a top speed of 28 knots and a best cruise around 22 knots. The Superior 1050 sedan is an excellent example of a traditional Kiwi pocket cruiser and comes with an excellent pedigree.

AS GOOD AS IT GETS Nimbus describe the 365 as a functional design built for the conscious yachtsman who appreciates simplicity, comfort and safety but also for families who want to enjoy a relaxing weekend cruise. A perfect description says Barry Thompson.

R

eleased in January 2017 the new 365 Coupé was marketed as a redesigned and refined version of the prizewinning 365 model with “side-walk”. Nimbus stated that the focus of development was on improving functionality and further increasing onboard comfort, ease-of-use and flexibility. The most eye-catching feature of the new boat is its appearance. The new 365 has a more modern design language, with sportier contours inherited from its sisters the 305 and 405. The intention has of course been to provide the boat with a new appearance more in harmony with the rest of the Coupé range. When I reviewed the Nimbus 305 last year, I commented then that I felt the boat was one of the best I had ever come across and overall an outstanding vessel. There are three boats in the Nimbus Coupe range, with the 305 being the baby of the fleet. Top of the line is the 405, with the 365 tucked in between. While all three follow a similar design form, they are all very different in what they offer. Obviously the bigger the boat, the more you get and in the case of the Nimbus, the bigger, the better. The Swedish built Nimbus 365 Coupe was the second Nimbus imported into New Zealand by Sports Marine and was interestingly sold to the owner of the first 305 Coupe, who wanted something bigger. The 365

108 PACIFIC POWERBOAT SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018

is effectively the 305 on steroids. Overall, the 365 is 1.49m longer and 0.36m wider than the 305 and while the 305 is strictly a single engine boat, the 365, is available with either single or twin engines. The 365 has a displacement of 6391 kgs with a single engine, with the 305 over 2200 kgs lighter at 4100 kg. Power options range from a single Volvo Penta D4260, through to a pair of Volvo Penta D6-300s and all through shaft drives. A single 260hp is good for around 20 knots, twin D4-225s will see 28 knots and if you go all the way to the twin D6-300, then you can expect 32 knots on the speedo. Our 365 was powered by a single Volvo Penta D6435 and gave a maximum speed of 29 knots, with the best cruise around 22-23 knots. We ran the boat out of the Tamaki River and into the Auckland harbour and while it wasn’t anywhere as rough as it was when I ran the 305, there was still a small sea running and enough to test the Nimbus. I certainly wasn’t surprised at how well the hull handles the water. It is a pleasure to drive, being effortless and responsive in all manoeuvers. With a bow and stern thruster, docking is made easy. The 365 was also fitted with EVC, Volvo Penta’s electronic engine control platform. EVC connects the engine, transmission, instruments and accessories in one and the same system. The result is high reliability, simple updates and access to smart accessories.

It was a cold winter’s day when I ran the 365 and I really appreciated the electric heating system, which quickly brought the saloon up to a comfortable temperature. There was no generator installed with the boat running a full 12-volt system.

OPEN PLAN Light, Light and more light. The 365 saloon is bathed in natural light from deep side windows, glass rear bulkhead doors and the glass skylight with two front opening hatches. These are electrically operated and come with integrated sun blinds. The open plan of the saloon is very Scandinavian with large flat surfaces and is made cosy with lighting, timber fittings and attractive material design. The Nimbus 365, just like the 305 utilises every available space for either storage or access. It’s also a boat that the more you walk around it, the more you find an intricate detail that sets the bar higher than other similar style sedans. For example in the saloon, the way the TV is hidden in the passenger side storage compartment, or the reversible passenger seat that flips down to become part of the dining arrangement. Plus all the Nimbus branded china, cutlery and glassware are standard. The galley is compact and functional with a large fridge, LPG oven and 2 burners ceramic stove, plus optional freezer under the dinette seat. Above the

Corian bench top, the 365 has a large extractor fan to take out the galley odours. The dinette is big enough for six and at a perfect height, so you have clear sightlines through the deep side windows. From the driving position you have excellent visibility all around, helped a lot with the one piece forward screen and large saloon windows and full height glass rear doors. The helm seat is fully adjustable and includes a bolster position so you can position it to suit your driving style. Our boat was equipped with a 12” MFD, but there is space for a 16”. Another neat feature is the flush-fitted sliding door which leads through to the side deck. The sliding door provides quick access when laying alongside and enables manoeuvring the boat from a standing position on the side deck. The Nimbus 365 differs from most coupes as it only has a single side deck on the starboard side. Nimbus call it the side walk and is designed to provide a generous wide deck for convenient movement to the foredeck area, plus makes maximum use of the interior volume. This means the cockpit, saloon, lower deck and cabin are more substantial than would otherwise be the case in a boat of this size with standard twin decks.

cabin with a large island berth with plenty of storage spaces and excellent headroom. The second cabin is neatly designed in under the saloon sole and has a large bulkhead to bulkhead squab, a small seat and enough space to stand when dressing. Both cabins share common bathroom space with a glass surrounded stand-up shower, head and composite vanity surface. Teak timber is used throughout the 365, and the accents in the bathroom offer a classic look into what is often a clinical space.

OUTDOOR LIVING Kiwis like a cockpit that is multi-functional for entertaining and fishing. The 365 gives you both with the large teak covered boarding platform incorporating twin deep bins for wet gear or as fish lockers, a central telescopic ladder is perfect for divers or swimmers. There is plenty of usable space to do all your fishing from here and with the addition of a stainless stable you can mount a small bait station with rod holders and a cutting board. There is a single starboard side access door to the cockpit, where you find an L shape lounger to port, with fold out table. Because there is no port side deck, the lounger maximises the beam and still leaves plenty of open space in the rest of the cockpit. The extended hardtop has enclosures all round so you can close off the outside area completely. Plus, if you are a sun lover, then the Nimbus 365 has that covered, with a foredeck sun pad complete with cup holders.

AS GOOD AS IT GETS Like the 305 I couldn’t fault the 365 and like the smaller version, it is without doubt as good as it gets. The boat is sold ready to cruise with standard options such as the Fusion entertainment system, shore power, Sleipner bow thruster, Eberspacher heater/defroster, and a Simrad NSS 12 all part of the $NZ720,350 package.

PASSION AND LOVE FOR BOATING SINCE 1968. 27- 30 SEPTEMBER 2018

It started in the early seventies when Volvo Penta needed a new kind of boat to suit their newly developed engine. An innovative group of people quickly seized the opportunity to create a new kind of boat for the social lifestyle. The Nimbus 26 was born and along with it a company that would become of one of Europe´s most renowned boat manufacturers. The company´s history is a true success story, a tale of innovation, perfect timing and survival. But most of all a story about people who know about boats and their passion and love for boating. A story still being told.

HIGH

& DRY If you want to keep your boat high and dry, be it in a waterway or in a marina the simple answer is a boat lift or dry berth. There are many different options available, but in their own way they all do the same job.

Essentially, a boat lift or dry berth is a system that you install inside a marina berth or next to a dock, and when the boat is not in use it holds the boat up, or in a dry enclosure, completely clear of the water. We look at some of the popular boat lifts and dry berths available and what they offer. WWW.BOAT MAGS.C O M 113

FABDOCK

FAB Dock is all about taking away the hassle and high cost of maintenance and antifouling your boat. Now available in New Zealand FAB Dock is in fact manufactured in New Zealand and has now been well tested on the Australasian market for over seven years and is now in use in nine countries. Incredibly robust and durable, FAB Dock eliminates the need to antifoul your boat. Your boat sits in a dry dock that is affordable, quick and easy to use. Drive your boat in, inflate the back of the dock and walk away as the

automated system takes over. Your boat is kept clean and dry and barnacle free. With a FAB Dock being about half the price of previous dry docking systems, it will pay for itself in just a few short years in maintenance and fuel savings, as well as improve the resale value of your boat. New Zealand water ways are fast becoming clogged with Fan-worm and other imported biological concerns, so the use of a FAB Dock will help the environment by not spreading these pests, as well as reducing the poisoning of our waterways through the elimination toxic antifoul. www.fabdock.com

AQUA DOCK The AquaDock AD2 Docking Platform is a boat storage system suitable for jetties, docks, pontoons and floating walkways. Access alongside is provided to enable inspection or fitting a cover after a day’s outing. It is available at 1,000 kg capacity and can be front or side mounted. The drive-on module is immensely strong and incorporates two longitudinal spars and a keel slot making loading a simple affair. Operation is very simple: line up your bow with the centre of the module, ensure your rudder/motor is pointing you directly forward then gently increase revs and power until your boat runs up the high density bow guide to sit safely cradled. Removing your boat is a reverse of this procedure. www.boatlift.co.nz 114 PACIFIC POWERBOAT SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018

AIR BERTH As the name suggests, the Air Berth uses air chambers to hold the boat high and dry above water, with an air chamber and pump system. Air controls regulate the supply of air to the main buoyancy chambers, which are made from High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) that is non-corrosive and has high UV stability. AirBerth’s patented flexible support cradles (9 models) suit both mono-hull planing and power catamarans from 1500kg to 10,000kg. As the boat is lifted from the water the flexible cradle will shape to the hull giving even, stable support. Spray jets give the boat a full hull rinse by connecting a standard fresh water hose to the AirBerth. www.airberth.com

FLOATBRICKS Be on the water in your jetski or small boat in seconds, jump on and go. These stylish FloatBricks docks allow you to drive on and off in seconds, making it super easy to get out and have fun on your PWC or trailer boats from 4m to 6m. Due to the modular design a flexible range of floating dry-docks for boats up to 1300kg / 6m are also available. One of the unique features of FloatBricks is there are no gaps between the bricks, which is also really important for maintaining the structural integrity of your PWC or boat. The high freeboard keeps your jet ski completely out of the water and the stabilisation systems mean your dock will not sag or bow over time. The modular design gives you the flexibility to add more bricks for extra docking space. You can also get storage bricks designed to easily store items, like your jet ski cover, or ropes while you are out on the water. www.dockpro.com.au

SEAPEN The SeaPen is like a garage for your boat, keeping the marine growth and barnacles off you’re your boat whilst stored but gives the boat owner the thrill and boat performance of a clean hull when they take the boat out. The SeaPen is quite different from a normal ‘boat lift’ as it doesn’t lift the boat above sea level. In Basic terms the SeaPen is like driving into a swimming pool and then close the swimming pool around the boat and pump all the water out. This allows the flexible pool liner/skin to shrink wrap the boat keeping it dry and marine growth free at water level! Designed and manufactured in Australia this local technology is now exporting all over the world, it is engineered with a robust outer layer (skin) and protective inner layer (woven rope mesh) that combine to give an incredibly strong and durable system. SeaPen’s patented rope mesh system has been designed to maximise air space around your boat,

118 PACIFIC POWERBOAT SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018

providing ventilation and helping to keep the hull and running gear clean. SeaPen’s special polymer skin resists barnacle growth when kept in sea water. No barnacles, means you never need to remove the SeaPen for cleaning. The SeaPen can be raised or lowered at the mooring, allowing access for the boat. When you come into your mooring simply raise the pen; this creates an isolated pond around the boat. Water can then be pumped out just like a normal dry dock. The SeaPen is operated like a car garage at home. When it is time to go out, using the remote control (optional) opens the SeaPen, water floods in and within minutes it has sunk away from the boat ready for you to simply drive away. Coming in is just as easy. Because SeaPen works at water level it doesn’t detract from the look of your boat, nor will it ruin yours or your neighbours view across the water. Looking out from your house, you’ll hardly even know the SeaPen is there. It is suitable for boats over 6m. www.dockpro.com.au

Whether you have a jetski, kayak, dinghy, 5m runabout or 15m sport boat, a Jet Dock product will provide an easy drive-on lift method, very low-maintenance construction and superior boarding and access, while also being modular and portable.

Simply drive off and you're ready to enjoy the water. JetDock Floating Dock
