TAKING ECOTOURISM TO THE NEXT LEVEL ECOTOURISM HAS BEEN identified to have one of the highest annual growth rates in the industry, according to the World Tourism Organization’s (UNWTO) study on ecotourism. One of the qualifying criteria on ecotourism, is to reduce transport related greenhouse gas emissions and to use renewable energy sources where possible. Soel Yachts and Naval DC have introduced the SoelCat 12, an autonomous solar electric catamaran for coastal water, lagoon and inter-island transportation and for the fast growing ecotourism market. ‘Soel’ stands for Solar Electric and is pronounced like ‘soul’. The SoelCat 12’s generous deck space is fully customisable and can host a variety of seating arrangements and layouts. For dive operations, the vessel offers generous tank storage space and wet storages for the dive gear. Moreover, SoelCat 12’s mobile power station capabilities of providing 6kVA of AC power make the SoelCat 12 an ideal and autonomous base for scientific and governmental coral reef research and marine life expeditions. The SoelCat 12 is purpose designed for salt-water applications and can even be beached on sandy beaches due to its reinforced hull build from lightweight fibreglass composite. The SoelCat 12 benefits from Naval DC’s nine years electric propulsion experience in harsh environments. The marine grade lithium polymer battery systems weigh in at just 8kg per kWh and can be remotely monitored. There is a total lithium battery capacity of 120kWh and can operate for 6 hours at 8 knots speed on the batteries alone. Measuring 11.80m in length, the SoelCat 12 can cruise at speeds between 6 and 15 knots. The SoelCat 12 has been designed to be demountable and fits into two 12m high cube containers. As a result of such compact dimensions, the vessel can easily be transported at affordable rates to remote areas or islands all over the world. Neither lamination processes, nor specialized tools are required for the SoelCat 12’s assembly on location. Launch of the first vessel will be in the third quarter of 2016. A weekender yacht version based on the SoelCat 12’s platform is currently being developed on the drawing table. www.navaldc.com

When Doug Dukeson and myself launched the first edition of New Zealand Propeller magazine at the 1996 Hutchwilco NZ Boat Show, we never envisaged that 20 years later we would still be working together and still producing New Zealand’s only powerboat based magazine. What started as a single title aimed solely at New Zealand trailer boats, quickly morphed into something bigger and we found a ready audience for the magazine in Australia. This then led to a dedicated Australian Propeller magazine that was edited by Barry Tyler. With the success of NZ Propeller, we could see the need also for a magazine dedicated to powerboats over 10m and so in 1998 we launched the prestigious Launch & MotorYacht magazine. At a time when New Zealand manufacturers were enjoying strong exports, the magazine was highly sought after as a promotional source for overseas boat shows. Both NZ Propeller and L&MYwere the only 100% power boating publications in New Zealand. Both were also sold in Australia and a number of other countries. In the following years, we also produced some specialist titles, including, the all Chinese language, China Yachting and Pacific Yachting, (edited by the late Shane Kelly) our one and only venture into sailing. The China Yachting magazine proved too difficult to continue and we closed Pacific Yachting after a few years as sailing wasn’t our thing. In 2011 with the effects of the GFC hitting hard we made the commercial decision to combine Propeller magazine (the NZ had been dropped) and Pacific MotorYacht (the Launch had been deleted) to form Pacific PowerBoat, the magazine that is currently being produced still by D & B Publishing Ltd. This had mixed reactions from readers and advertisers but has ultimately proven to be the right move. In recent years, we also added other specialist titles to the stable of

magazines; Pacific RIB, Alloy Boat, Pacific PassageMaker and PWC magazine. All of which now appear as annual publications in issues of Pacific PowerBoat both online and in print. You’ll see we have the 2016 Pacific PassageMaker Annual in this issue. As stand alone publications they are not viable anymore, but we still feel there is a need to give these market sectors particular exposure. I have been a marine journalist for over 40 years and along with business partner Doug with nearly 30 years in marine sales and marketing, we reckon we make a strong team. However realising that the print world is in a vulnerable position from social media and online, we recently ventured into online videos, social media promotions, such as Facebook and YouTube. We have been developing a strong synergy between print and online and it seems to be working well for us, especially with our video packages. However, we are convinced that the printed magazine will always be an important part of the business and happily we are currently seeing some growth not only in advertising support but also sales. While I don’t see us adding any more titles in the near future, we are investing heavily in building our online presence, as that as where I see our strength will be in the future.

A GREAT 20 YEARS & MORE TO COME
PREMIER SHIPPING • Specialist Worldwide Shipping of Boats and Marine Equipment •
Wow, 20 years on, and still rattling the keyboard of a powerboat magazine. I still remember sending a fax to Barry, our editor and business partner from London in early 1996 (and still actually have the faxed document - believe it or not) it was a list of potential feature ideas we could start with to get a powerboat magazine off the ground. Barry and I had discussed this idea before I set off on my OE adventures. About two months after sending the fax, while paddling in a canoe down the Zambezi in Africa – I managed to make a call back to my girlfriend of the time, who told me she had received a call from Barry and was keen to look at the opportunity. Two weeks later I was in a rented a car and drove from Invercargill back to Auckland spreading the good word. 20 years later, we have made the same trip many times more and met many special people along the way – both industry and readers. We have sadly seen some great brands come and go, the likes of Sea Nymph, Bonito, Formula, Wave Crusher, Oliver, Genesis and the likes. We have had the opportunity to meet and unfortunately see the passing of some great designers and personalities, including Malcolm Tennant, Ken Lusty, Sandy Sands, Roger Arkell, Len Gilbert, Shane Kelly, Ginger Gibbs and many more. I have personally been lucky enough, along with Barry, to experience hundreds of new boats and the adventures that came with them, in some very mysterious and glamorous places, the misty Doubtful Sound, the Marlborough Sounds, White Island, Great Barrier, jet boat adventures up the Waimak and North Island rivers. Adventured across to exotic places as far away as Spain for the Volvo IPS launch, Tahiti, Raro, North Queensland charters and Fijian destinations. Countless Australian Boat Shows in Sydney, Melbourne, Queensland, Perth, Fort Lauderdale, Singapore, Taiwan and so on, even though they involved a bit of work, they have been great experiences (with a few stories) and an opportunity to assist the marine industry down under to share their fabulous marine wares to the world. I feel very privileged to have been able to accomplish this and work with the many great people I have, as work colleagues, clients and readers – thanks for a great 20 years – I look forward to a few more yet.

>> GUEST COMMENT NICKY SINDEN
Nicky Sinden presenter of Ados Addicted To Fishing
FISHING IS MY ADDICTION We all have our addictions, and like many of us, mine just happens to be fishing. Lots of people ask me, Nicky, why do you love fishing so much? I have been fishing since I was a sprat myself. My family own part of Motiti Island off the coast of Papamoa in the Bay of Plenty. My aunty and uncle live there and grow avocados, farm bees, cattle and sheep. I spent every summer as a kid out there inspecting rock pools and fishing off the breakwater. Motiti is where I fell in love with fishing from the age of three, when I was able to hold a hand line. My uncle & my dad were my fishing mentors and would take me on fishing adventures during my childhood. Being one of three girls, I was the tomboy and loved to get my hands dirty. I’d be the girl with a huge smile on my face while having my hands right up inside the gill of a snapper for a photo. I love fishing for much less rational reasons than simply providing food on the table. I love to go fishing for the sense of adventure. It’s the unknown mystery of the fact that anything could happen. It’s the comradery with your friends and family while you are on the water. It’s the sense of relief having your phone out of range and being able to disconnect from every day stress that being on land provides. It’s the challenge of man or woman vs fish and perfecting your rigs, trusting your knots, being a pioneer and believing in yourself enough to give different rigs a go. You never know what will happen next and when you catch the target species by trying something new you feel a sense of achievement. Then there’s the sharing aspect, coming back to land and filleting 12 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MAY / JUNE 2016
your catch and then giving it to everyone you know. As I sit here in my Stabicraft 2400 Supercab with a line in the water, and joting down this column, Ados Addicted to Fishing is on the on the eve of its third season. I have always been passionately curious about fishing and have had a hunger to learn more and share it with those around me and season three of the show will be no different. From billfish to blue cod, this new season of the show will appeal to everyone. The premier episode sees myself embark on an epic adventure to the remote Wanganella Banks, a location that most anglers can only dream of fishing. We travelled 400 nm offshore and over six days landed numerous yellowfin tuna, including one ‘horse’ over 65kgs! In later episodes we tow the Stabicraft to the South Island to fish with several locals in the stunning Marlborough Sounds. Trout fishing is a favourite amongst Mainlanders and I’m quick to learn how it’s done in the southern rivers. Season three will not only see us undertaking some exciting adventures, but I also want to educate the viewers on the basics of fishing, how to get out there and ultimately catch fish. Of course, a season of the show wouldn’t be complete without a swordfish thrown in the mix for good measure! Most girls are addicted to chocolate and shoes. My addiction is fishing and I love it. The new season of Ados Addicted to Fishing premieres on Prime TV, Saturday May 7 at 5pm. www.addictedtofishing.co.nz www.facebook.com/addictedtofishingnz

Azimut Verve 36

ENERGETIC PERFORMANCE At the Miami Boat Show in February this year, Azimut presented the first drawings of the Verve 40. Belonging to the small boat range and the successor of the Verve 36, which was launched two years ago, the Azimut Verve 40 is a real ocean hot rod. The place of the presentation couldn’t be more suitable, considering that this 12m boat with a central console has a particular American spirit, starting from the engines ( three 350 hp outboards). The boat is in fact conceived for the American market but it will have a Mediterranean soul as well. It’s not by chance that it will be officially presented at the Cannes Boat Show next September. 14 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MAY / JUNE 2016
The Verve 40 is a fast, comfortable, and safe walk around for medium-range cruises, where convenience combines with versatile comfort and Italian style. A sun pad area at the stern converts into a dining area for six people, with access to the sea and a modern suite below deck. The Verve 40’s cockpit is the epitome of comfort, thanks to simple insights and genius solutions like the large sun deck that in two easy steps and without moving pillows, turns into a practical table for six people. The below deck is a synonym of functionality and liveability, with spacious and bright spaces. And amenities that will make special
your stay on the boat, even during a short cruise, taking advantage of the comfortable sofa that converts into an extra bed, or the fully equipped galley. The 12.68 m x 3.84 m, 11.9 tonne Verve 40, will run 45 knots with triple 350hp outboards and cruise at 37 knots. Fuel tankage is 1,300 litres, with 250-litre water capacity. Exterior and interior styling are by Neo Design & Azimut Yachts, with the boat built by Azimut do Brasil, a branch company of Azimut|Benetti Group. PROTECTORS FINDING FAVOUR IN AUSTRALIA New Zealand built Rayglass Protector RIBs are proving increasingly popular in Australia, with significant numbers now making their way across the Tasman. Rayglass CEO Dave Larsen says the substantial increase in Australian sales has been driven 20 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MAY / JUNE 2016
largely by the Protector’s reputation for the highest quality. “The buyers were all looking for a highend RIB that could travel a fair way offshore quickly, safely and with a high degree of comfort for those on board. “Quality of build, good looks and a top class finish, both inside and out, were also very important.” He says the most popular Protectors so far have been outboard-powered centre consoles in the 7.5-metre to 12.5-metre range. “The Protectors’ incredible versatility has also been a strong selling point for us all over Australia,” he says. “For example, one Protector is being used primarily for pot hauling, another for fast fishing trips out to
the Great Barrier Reef and another for cruising offshore to an outer island holiday home in Western Australia.” As well as being very popular in New Zealand and Australia, they can also be found in most parts of the globe: Europe, the United States, Scandinavia, Russia, Asia and throughout the Pacific. The Protectors high build quality and ability to travel quickly, safely and comfortably in virtually any conditions has seen them successfully employed around the world: as patrol and rescue boats, as support vessels for international yacht racing teams, as fast pleasure cruisers and sports fishing boats, and as superyacht tenders. www.rayglassboats.co.nz

TRIPLE V8 YAMAHA POWER NEW NAIAD A new Naiad for Coastguard was launched at the end of April – this one for the PIctonbased Marlborough unit that services the Marlborough Sounds and Cook Strait. Road and helicopter access to much of the Sounds is limited so this boat, unique amongst the Coastguard fleet, performs a large amount of ambulance work. It has a full-sized ambulance bay which is laid out just like a road ambulance, and is completely separate from the rest of the boat. The wide walk-around decks allow a stretcher to be wheeled from the bow around the boat to the ambulance bay aft. Two of Naiad’s clever fender features also nicely come into play - the bow section of
the fender folds down with builtin steps to allow patient transfer (or stretcher) from a beach, and when back at the dock the side gate means you can step straight off (or wheel the stretcher off) without climbing over the pontoon. This is a big, brawny 14m boat, powered by triple Yamaha 350 V8 outboards. It features the latest Naiad notched bow and proven stepped hull design. The notched bow extends waterline length in heavy seas and the steps improve efficiency at speed in calmer conditions. The all-aluminium boat was locally

Constructed of aluminium, the Cree Mini LED flashlight has three modes, high/low/strobe so it becomes an excellent emergency signalling device. It runs on a single AA battery and weighs just 65g. constructed by Blenheim firm Cuddon, and features an impressive Furuno electronics kit. It is “wrapped” in vinyl rather than painted, with working areas of the boat left in bare aluminium for minimal maintenance. TRISTRAM SALES GROWING IN AUSTRALIAN MARKET
NEWS
Tristram hardtop sales in Australia’s Eastern & Southern States have recently experienced unprecedented growth. This growth has set a new record in the company’s 30-year history for international sales. Tristram Marine’s decision to be the one and only retailer for their highly reputed brand have brought Australian customers to New Zealand to view the range, choose colours and options, and see first-hand the ‘Tristram Difference’. The 5th annual Tristram Marine Expo this May has also sparked further interest in the brand and some prospective buyers from Australia have already booked their flights to experience the Expo first-hand this year.
Tristram Marine’s General Manager Kingsley Fink has suggested the growth has been driven by Tristram’s brand name gaining traction in a market where cockpit space, practical design features, cockpit-based cooking stations and blue water performance are top priorities for boat owners. “Australian customers are attracted to our CAD design and CNC moulding process which is not common in the New Zealand or Australian fibreglass trailer boat industries. Coupled with our second-to-none attention to detail, and intrinsic passion for all things ‘fishing’, our owners in Australia have all suggested that Tristram was undeniably their first choice when it came to offering all of
these features” says Kingsley. Tristram Marine’s Directors Lance & Bronwyn Fink have recently secured further property on both the northern and southern boundaries of the company’s existing state-of-the-art production plant. This strategic plan is set to enable the business to keep up with everincreasing local and international demand for Tristram’s range of offshore fibreglass trailer boats. Tristram Boats are now owned in all states of Australia, with a number of Australian orders currently in production to be shipped over the coming months through into the summer of 2017. www.tristram.co.nz
ULTRAFLEX’S INTUITIVE TRIM TAB JOYSTICK Ultraflex’s latest MTC trim tabs come with a new small footprint, low profile joystick that is so intuitive there is no need for any trim indicators. With traditional trim tabs, skippers need indicators to show the current position of the two tabs before they can make individual adjustments. In contrast, Ultraflex’s patented new control system features a single, highly intuitive joystick, complete with simple, clear graphics. “Keeping a trailer boat on a comfortable, 24 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MAY / JUNE 2016
even keel has never been so simple,” says Grant Matthews from Ultralflex’s New Zealand distributors, Lusty and Blundell Ltd. “Want to bring down the port side because the boat is leaning to starboard? Just push the joystick to port until the boat is level. Ideal for both novice and experienced boaties and both portofino and traditional transoms, the MTC series comes in a variety of plate sizes, from 9x9” to 12x18”. www.lusty-blundell.co.nz.
LEIGH-SMITH YACHTS GO BIG AT SCIBS
Sanctuary Cove based Leigh-Smith Yachts will present a wide range of boats at this year’s SCIBS. Amongst them are two new releases from Alaska Yachts. The long anticipated addition to the Alaska fleet has arrived with the 43ft Sedan, forged from the same hull mould as her larger cousin the 47 Sedan. LeighSmith Yachts have developed the 43ft “Compact Version” aimed at providing the largest vessel platform with a mid-queen cabin that fits into a 12m marina berth. One of the class leading differences is the 4.2m beam - variable deadrise hull design
offering a far more stable and volumetric platform ensuring the vessel can cruise comfortably at 9-10kn or sprint to 20kn+ yet also is incredibly stable & conformable while at anchor. The new Alaska 49 is set to make a splash at SCIBS 2016. A spirited performer, this vessel offers a pilothouse feel with the single level usability of the sedan format. Of special interest is certain to be the new Elandra 53. Beyond it sleek profile and well-proportioned lines, the discerning will be enticed by a signature development. Elandra incorporates an incredibly broad
beam that provides immense cockpit deck space with aft lounge. This elegantly transitions with the saloon, which opens up to combine a generous indoor/outdoor entertainment area on a single level. Second-hand boats will include a 2011 Hampton 650 Endurance, 2001 Azimut 100 Jumbo, 2005 Monte Fino 88 Flybridge, 2005 Kingfisher 56 Royal and a 2007 Fairline 47 Targa. LSY will also collaborate with Rolls Royce, Aston Martin & McLaren by sharing our showroom and co-branding events through the show. www.LSYachts.com.au

RUTLAND MARINE RELEASE NEW WIND TURBINE Boat owners know the challenges of providing power on board for essential equipment such as navigation instruments and lighting and so many will already know the well known brand Rutland Windcharger. Now the manufacturers have introduced their first 1.2m diameter 3 bladed turbine to deliver the increasing power demanded by modern boaties. The highlight of the Rutland 1200 Windcharger’s elegant design is the highly efficient but quiet running aerofoil blades which the company term Tri-namic Profile. The purpose designed profile brings together features that ensure very low aerodynamic noise; high power performance and low wind speed start up. Cruisers with battery capacities over 200Ah are most likely to benefit from this wind turbine as it can typically deliver around 120Ah per day. That’s enough to keep a refrigerator, lights, occasional watermaker usage and other low energy appliances running on board without the need to run the engine. Reducing engine running time is an important issue, especially when long distance cruising as fuel is a premium and topping up can be unpredictable. See the new Rutland 1200 windcharger on the Stella Systems display at the Auckland Hutchwilco Boat Show 12th to 15th of May stand 239 as well as Sanctuary Cove Boat Show 19th to 22nd of May stand 53 in the main pavilion. www.stellasystems.com.au

WIN THE DREAM WON When Surtees, Isuzu and Honda teamed up to bring the Win The Dream competition to Facebook, they certainly started a groundswell. With over 40,000 entries, the response to the grand prize was outstanding. And what a prize! Wellington couple Dean and Anita Adgo were the lucky winners of the ‘Win the Dream’ promotion. Valued at just over $134,000, Win the Dream is possibly the biggest prize pool ever stockpiled in the NZ Marine industry. The competition ran over six months.
“Win the Dream was a huge success” states Ian Biddick, GM at Honda Marine “The level of interest and the huge number of entries saw the promotion go viral and the hype around it in the final week in the lead up to the draw was just massive.” Dean is a keen fisherman but didn’t own a boat until winning the ‘dream’ package. He was regular crew on a neighbour’s boat which he said was beginning to develop some ‘issues’. “He was talking about selling it so I was thinking about buying a boat myself, but
now I won’t have to!” Dean says. Included in the Honda ‘Win the Dream’ package was a tricked out Isuzu D-Max utility, a Surtees 575 Workmate loaded with Shimano tackle, Garmin electronics and RescueMe safety gear’ all powered by a Honda fourstroke V-TEC 100HP outboard. Dean & Anita are clearly enjoying their new prizes with the distinctive Surtees already having been spotted on the water’s around Wellington which is great to see!

GOLD COAST AUSTRALIA TAKE PODIUM IN X-CAT OPENER
While the Victory Team lived up to their name and reputation by taking the first title of the 2016 UIM XCAT World Powerboating Series with a win at the Fujairah GP, it was the performance of the Australian teams that attracted a lot of attention. The defending Series champions, Arif Al Zaffain and Nadir bin Hendi, stormed to the front in typical fashion and led from start to finish to top the podium and the Series after round 1. It was not a race without drama, however, as Team Australia (Brett Luhrmann and Paul Virik Nilsen) and Abu Dhabi Team 5 (Rashed Al Tayer and Faleh Al Mansoori) collided at the first turn and the Australians flipped their boat. With both drivers safely back on land, the race was restarted with Victory Team once again storming to the front on the first lap and staying there until the end.
Meanwhile, further back Gold Coast Australia was steadily making their way up the field. After a dismal start in eighth position, Tom Barry-Cotter and Ross Willaton made the decision to take their long laps early and the strategy paid off. The pair had worked their way up to fourth spot when the Fujairah Team (Serafino Barlesi and Alessandro Barone) experienced problems and lost speed, meaning the Australians moved up into the podium places. Swecat Racing (Mikael Bentsson and Erik Stark) who were then in second still had one more long lap to complete however – and when they tackled that, the Gold Coast boast made their move up into second, where they stayed until the finish. “We had a really bad qualifying session, so we were starting from eighth on the grid,” explained Gold Coast’s Barry-Cotter. “We had a lot of technical issues but we knew all
weekend that the boat had a lot of pace. It was just the technical issues holding us back. “We got a really bad start so from there we were literally one of the last boats to come around the second corner, so we made the call to take both the long laps straight away and we managed to have clear water. We honestly didn’t know until right at the end that we were still on for a podium, just because so many of the boats waited so long to take their long laps. So it was a lot of suspense for us. We were really aggressive. It’s a really great result for the team. They worked so hard to get the boat ready and I can’t thank them enough.” Swecat eventually finished third with the Dubai combination of Salem Al Adidi and Eisa Al Ali grateful they weren’t the ones flipping their boat again – and finishing in fourth place.
Maritimo recently launched their third entry into the 2016 Australian Superboat Series, with the totally revamped Team 3. Previously raced as a twin cockpit boat, Maritimo have totally rebuilt the decks and changed to a single cockpit, but also added some extra width in the tunnel. Power is still twin Mercruiser 525s and the new Maritimo is now running #6 drives. Andrew Willaton and Andrew Searle will be running the boat in Superboat 1000 class this season. 40 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MAY / JUNE 2016
NAPIER THROWS UP THE ROUGH Extreme water conditions created a very challenging race for the “Red Steel 100” in association with “Napier Now” offshore powerboat race in Napier. Officials considered the conditions marginal prior to the one-hour race start, improving slightly and the race went ahead. The most spectacular race so far in the 2016 NZ Championship Series, 23 boats thrilled the thousands of spectators who lined the bank of the Napier foreshore to watch the race. Competitors spent more time in the air than on the water! The race started off with drama and disappointment – “Profloors International Racing” returned to the pits with a broken trim pump which the crew quickly replaced, and therefore missed the sighting lap but were back in the water in time for the race start. The race favourite “222 Offshore” team
from Australia was forced to withdraw with a broken impellor water pump which was a huge disappointment for the team who had spent many days putting in bigger engines for this race to give the Kiwi’s “a run for their money”. Spectators and Officials were on their feet with the spectacular action as they watched “Profloors International Racing” (Wayne Valder and Chris Hanley) and “FMI Racing” (Warren Lewis and Andrew Koolen) go head to head in the trying conditions. “FMI Racing“ missed a buoy on the first lap, forcing them to turn and round both buoy’s saving them from a race penalty. This gave “Profloors “ the lead. Not one to come second, “FMI” fought back from 30 seconds behind after the first lap to just four seconds in lap six of thirteen of the one hour race. The battle went on lap after lap until “FMI” was forced to pull
out with a broken fuel line reducing them to one engine and limping back to the race pits. “Profloors International Racing” took the win, with “Profloors 10” (Wayne Carson and Richard Shores) finishing in second. “Barley Legal“ (John Shand and Mike Knight) dominated the Superboat Light Class with their boat handling the rough water conditions until one lap to go and lost power with an electrical problem, leaving the door open for “Outboard Pro “ (Hayden and Delia Speirs) to take the win. “NZ Home Loans“ (Chris Haeger and Karl Wall) finishing in second. Classic Class saw “Gull Force 10“ (Gavin McGrath and Haaka Le Sueur) returning to the series after missing the last two rounds, battled with “Supercock Racing” (Shan Martin and Aaron Fletcher) on every lap. The result was a three second win to “Supercock Racing”.
AUCKLAND PTOP TO PROFLOORS While the recent Auckland Point to Point race in the inner Hauraki Gulf could hardly be called a true point to point event, it was a break from the traditional typical old style of offshore racing. The fleet started off the Pier next to Kelly Tarltons Okahu Bay and then headed out to do several laps of the one hour race before heading back to Okahu Bay. When the flag dropped for the first of three tiered starts, the excitement of the Superboats roaring off left an impressive sound of V8’s leaving Auckland’s Waitemata Harbour. Aussie team “222 Offshore“ (Darren Nicholson and Peter McGrath) were the first out of the shoot, leaving the Kiwi teams “FMI Racing“ (Warren Lewis and Andrew Koolen), “Profloors 10“ (Richard Shores and Garry Smith –sitting in for the Wayne Carson), “Profloors International Racing“ (Wayne Valder and Chris Hanley) struggling to catch the two 850 hp powered engines of 222 Offshore. They remained in these positions throughout the race with “222 Offshore” crossing the line
in first place, “FMI Racing” came in second with a blaze of smoke following them to the finish line. At first feared it to be a fire on board, rescue teams followed them to the finish, with a blown engine – luckily no fire and the boat was quickly back on its trailer. Third and fourth across the line was “Profloors 10” and “Profloors International Racing”. However the first two teams “222 Offshore“ and “FMI Racing” missed two race buoys on the 100 mile course resulting in them both receiving a 20 minute penalty relegating them back to third and fourth places, leaving the win to “Profloors 10“ (Richard Shore and Garry Smith) with “Profloors International Racing” in second place. The start of the Superboat Lite Class saw an early withdrawal of “Total Home Developments” (Michael Fletcher and Jason Way) forced to return to the pits with a broken engine mount. “Barely Legal“ (John Shand and Mike Knight) shot to the lead having a brilliant race crossed the line in first place from
“Fuel Doctor” (Allan Branch and Alex Smith) and “Outboard Pro” Hayden and Delia Speirs finishing within seconds of each other. Again a course infringement saw “Outboard Pro” missing race buoys and gained a time penalty. Rookie driver in this class Chris Haeger and his Aussie throttle man Karl Wall in “NZ Home Loans” were happy to take second place while their other teammates also received race time penalties relegating them back to third and fourth placing. “Chindit,” (Peter and Kane Wingate) won the Sports 225 Class and really enjoyed the old style offshore race format, with new team “Irate” (Paul Ludeman and Justene Anderson) in second place. >> CRUISING MATTERS WITH LAURIE CRANFIELD Lossiemouth harbour was once full of trawlers
SCOTLAND’S LOSSIEMOUTH HARBOUR THE MORAY FIRTH The next best thing to boating is wandering around interesting marinas and I’ve seen few as interesting as fishing harbour-turnedmarina Lossiemouth in Scotland’s largest Firth – the Moray on the north-east coast. Bordering the Highlands this is wild territory, where temperatures can struggle to reach double figures (the days we spent there were around 7dC), vicious North Sea gales and huge waves often lash the coast and the har (fog) severely restricts visibility. The Firth’s 500 miles of shoreline includes salt marshes, mudflats, rocky shores, windswept cliffs and surprisingly, many stunning sandy beaches. But even in summer the water is a very chilly 12dC, discouraging all but the most masochistic of swimmers. Nevertheless hardy types enjoy kayaking, surfing windsurfing and sailing. The Firth has abundant wildlife including seals, whales, dolphins, lobsters, scallops, many varieties of fish and hundreds of bird species. At its western end the Firth leads to the famous Loch Ness and the 60-mile-long Caledonian Canal providing access to western Scotland and numerous whisky distilleries surround the area, many of which are open for the public to enjoy. LOSSIEMOUTH The quaint village of Lossiemouth’s harbour, blasted out of solid rock in the 1830s as a trading port for the nearby town of Elgin, is found at the mouth of the Lossie River Access to this area is by train or air to Inverness 40 miles to the west of Elgin. Between the two is the site of the historic Culloden battlefield where the last major battle on British soil took place in 1746 and still gets passions rising. The RAF has long maintained an airfield here, nowadays home to Tornado fighters, Sea King 42 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MAY / JUNE 2016
Helicopters and the 617 Squadron – famously known as the Dambusters. Fishing became the mainstay of the economy and the first modern seine-net boat was designed here. Lossiemouth was Scotland’s second largest whitefish port and a fascinating quayside maritime museum brings back to life the tough times the hardy fishermen endured. At its zenith Lossiemouth was home port to about 80 fishing boats and the present harbour chairman, George Reid, once owned 18 of them. He explained to us the industry not only provided employment for about 400 boat crews but also for an infrastructure of a further 600 associated workers including packers, drivers, chandlers, mechanics and riggers. Nowadays all we could see is a solitary lobster boat plus about six small open fishing boats. The area around the harbour is hugely atmospheric including many historic stone buildings now used as cafes, shops and a museum. The harbour’s main source of income nowadays is a marina accommodating up to 120 boats in the water and 48 on the hardstand, where they are securely lashed down during winter to prevent them blowing over during severe gales. . It’s not by chance that we’re visiting Lossiemouth but due to a family connection – my brother, Charles, is the Harbourmaster and we can see his 36ft van der Staadt designed sloop, Acrobat, moored to one of the pontoons. Charles and his nowwife Marie sailed Acrobat from Brisbane Australia through south-east Asia, across the Indian Ocean and up the Red Sea into the Mediterranean. It was here during our 2005 visit to Acrobat in Turkey that Charles and Marie became our inspiration for the Med cruising life we now enjoy. After spending several years living and working in Turkey, Italy and France Charles and Marie motored through France’s
Midi Canal system eventually arriving in Lossiemouth, where they continued to live aboard while working as well as finding time to sail and explore Scotland’s rugged and remote offshore islands and some of Norway’s frigid coastline. Charles has a great sense of humour and gets on very well with most everyone - he’s also a practical and highly technically qualified guy, being a shipwright, builder and cabinetmaker. After Acrobat arrived in the marina the staff and other berth holders were soon tapping his skills until he eventually gained employment there, later becoming the marina’s manager, a position which is very much hands-on. One of the most interesting vessels in the marina at the time of our visit was Lady Kathryn, an 18 tonne, 54ft oak-framed timber motor yacht powered with two Perkins diesel engines which were more than 10 years old when they were installed in the new vessel in 1929 and still going strong. Her owner proudly gave us a tour of his vessel and explained that she had participated in WW2, loaded to the gunwales with allied troops during their evacuation from Dunkirk. THE ULTIMATE “BIG BOY’S TOY” Most marinas move boats in and out of the water using a travel lift that straddles a boat and lifts it with high tensile strength strops. Lossiemouth uses a Swedish designed and built diesel-powered, remote-controlled submersible sub-lift with a 25tonne capacity. As the whole unit including the engine goes underwater the engine has a watertight hood using trapped air to keep the engine dry, and a snorkel for the exhaust to be used while the engine is under water. If like us you enjoy wandering around marinas and fishing harbours, there’s plenty to see on Scotland’s wild north-east coast.

Battling the Bluster
After launching at a very low tide alf oon ay ramp, we find that the day we have picked is not one would call a ractive. Although there is no lack of warm sunshine, the wind is blustery and the sea conditions in ast Auckland s amaki River are challenging to say the least. f course, that s not a bad thing, especially if one puts aside the comfort of the reviewer. irtually every boat can look
fantastic when the sea is dead at and one is seriously considering water-skiing off to the outer islands. t is when there are unpredictable holes of varying depths, cross currents and confused seas that one sees how a hull performs. And, as every boatie knows, that is very important. ecause, although we do not usually head out in those conditions, we often have to cope with them on our way back home. am therefore happy to report that would uite happily head to sea in such conditions and considerably worse in this Surtees amaha combo. hile hard charging around the camera boat, the rig performed both predictably and surprisingly comfortably and there was never a time when felt anything less than in total control. ard charging into, across and down the nasty chop was simply a ma er of dialling in the correct combination of engine trim and ectratab auto-retract trim tabs and occasionally tweaking the wheel. At rest, the boat is very stable, even in the reasonably unstable conditions, thanks to Surtees renowned ooding keel. his features a chamber along the centreline, open to the rear, which automatically fills with water at rest, and then discharges its contents as the boat moves forward. n rough conditions, a manually operated ap allows the skipper to retain this ballast while underway, thus making the boat heavier and less likely to be knocked around by the wind and waves. or a fishing boat, being able to back up at speed, even into the chop, is a necessity and the Surtees amaha combo handled this with ease.
The cabin has plenty of handy stowage, clever steps up to the side-opening hatch and the twin infills.
The compact hardtop and cuddy cabin are a good compromise.
Even the sides are fully featured with rod and drink holders, LED lighting, a Jabsco washdown system and rubber matting in the side lockers.
The business end with a bait station, live bait tank and a front-opening hatch that doubles as a seat or step.
n fact, it handled pre y well everything with an easy aplomb. At times, it was easy to forget that there was an outboard of any si e on the transom, let alone one with horses under the cowl. nfortunately, the conditions and a slightly mal-functioning digital fuel readout although it may have been the operator that was at fault meant it was difficult to get accurate speed and economy figures. owever, we certainly had no trouble in e tensively blasting across the waves in the normal cruising band of rpm at speeds in e cess of knots.
Practical Cockpit
ike all good fishing boats, the pri e package s cockpit is one big, unclu ered space, with loads of practical stuff around the fringes. Starting at the transom, the dominant feature is the Surtees ait Station. A stylish and effective piece of kit, it comes with three integral rod holders and, best of all, a drainage hose that has been plumbed right through the platform. etween the transom and washdown pump is another superbly useful piece of kit a live bait well under the walkthrough to the platform. asily accessed by lifting the treadplate
top hatch, it comes complete with a cockpitfacing glass panel, making it easy to check what is happening inside. he twin ba eries and their isolating switches are safely out of harm s way in the large transom locker. his comes with a large front-opening hatch which like transom above, the inside of the side lockers and the top of the coamings has been fi ed with thoughtfully-positioned rubber ma ing panels. he hatch also comes with a typically-practical piece of Surtees engineering a simple aluminium catch that fits over the base of the starboard side locker, meaning the opened hatch can be used as either a seat or even as a step up to the transom. A large wet stowage locker, with its own bung, occupies the aft end of the centreline, behind the -litre under oor fuel tank. here are two-rod holders and a drink holder in each of the coamings and a further si rod holders in the stylish, integral rocker launcher that forms part of the hard top. his la er also comes with three well-positioned hand grips, a white navigation light and two aerials one for the Garmin and the other for the usion stereo system .

POWERBOAT HISTORY
OUR
20 YEAR JOURNEY
Part One - NZ Propeller Magazine 1996 - 2011 At the New Zealand Boat Show, June 1996, we launched the first issue of New Zealand Propeller magazine, the first and only magazine totally devoted to trailer boating. The response was exceptional and with the industry on a high and a stable economy, the magazine boomed. Our mission for the magazine was to cover every aspect of trailer boating in New Zealand and some in Australia and become the ‘bible’ for trailer boats. I feel we certainly
achieved that and over the 15-year live span of the magazine we covered just about everything. We ran hundreds of boat reviews, countless destination articles, delved into all aspects of fishing and brought you hundreds of technical articles. We were and remain the only magazine to run detailed engine shootouts and head to head comparisons of similar boats. In 2011, at the height of the GFC, things were not great financially in the marine market and we made the decision to incorporate Propeller (we had dropped the NZ a few years earlier after a big push to OZ) with our sister publication, Pacific MotorYacht. The new magazine was called Pacific PowerBoat and now five years on and 20 years since Doug Dukeson and myself started D&B Publishing Ltd, it is more than holding its own in the very tough marine publishing market. We have seen quite a few marine titles fade away in that time, but through hard work and personal commitment to the market, we have survived and will continue to service a market that we know so well. The new Pacific PowerBoat remained a magazine entirely dedicated to powerboating, albeit from 3m to around 30m, so the size range just got bigger. This came with mixed reactions, but ultimately it has proven the right move and got us through a difficult few years. However as the economy has improved, we saw the need for another
dedicated trailer boat magazine, this time covering the very lucrative alloy boat market. In 2014, we launched Alloy Boat magazine and now eight issues later, it is going stronger than ever. Currently, it is a tri-annual, but we do have plans to turn this into a quarterly sometime soon. Pacific PowerBoat remains as our principal title, published every two months and now also incorporates three other specialist magazine inserts, RIB Magazine (Sept-Oct), Pacific PassageMaker Magazine (May-Jun) and Pacific PWC Magazine (Jan-Feb). We have also embraced the online and video markets, with a significant investment in those areas. We are continually adding more on-line content and videos and working towards our on-line marine store. Rather than ramble on about what we have done over the past 20 years, we decided to put together a pictorial portfolio of some interesting and cool things we did, places we visited and people we met. In Part One we cover the first 15 years of Propeller magazine. In Part Two in the next issue (JulyAug) we look at the ten years of Pacific Motor Yacht (1999-2009) and Part Three (Sept-Oct) it’s the turn of Pacific PowerBoat (2011-now) and our other stand alone publications in the last 20 years, Pacific PassageMaker, (20112014), China Yachting (2006) and Australian PowerBoat (2003-2005). Lake Karapiro has always been the ancestral home of GP racing and has been a favourite venue of ours over the past 20 years.
Over the past two decades, we had carried out numerous engine head to head tests, such as this one when we compared ten different 50/55hp outboards.
When we took a CSB Huntsman Dorado to White Island in late 1997, we found a very active volcano with an awesome grandeur of nature and a desolation that made it hard to believe that people once lived and earned a living on the island mining sulphur. When we shot the images for the Aug 1997 cover of the Tristram Millennium 701, designer and builder Lance Fink chose a very appropriate background to show off his new boat. An image that still portrays the highest quality of the brand today.

THE BENCHMARK OF
Tony Kean explores the development of the Hamilton jet boat, from the early 1950s to the present day.
Early jet boat - the first known photograph of a Hamilton jetboat in action - taken in Easter 1954. Bill Hamilton on the Ohau River.
64 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MAY / JUNE 2016
A publicity stunt to promote the shallow draught and “clean hull bottom” of the jet boat.
Sir William (Bill) Hamilton is considered the father of the commercial jet pump.
Any discussion about the development of the jet boat must first talk about the development of the waterjet propulsion unit. Obviously, you can’t have one without the other, and as the term “jet boat” now represents a far greater variety of vessel types around the world than it did 60 years ago it’s the waterjet unit that is the one common factor in all. It was during the summer of 1951 when South Canterbury farmer, engineer and inventor Bill Hamilton turned his creative mind to the challenge of shallow river boating. Returning home from a holiday at Lake Wanaka Bill’s wife Peggy suggested they camp beside the Waitaki River, but Bill complained there’d be nothing to do there unless they had a boat to explore the river. In fact, Bill had considered this problem over 40 years earlier, when as an eight-year-old he would canoe down the flooded creek on his family farm, only to have to physically haul the canoe back to the top so he could go again. Back then his less-than-ideal solution was to build a cart that the dog could tow behind. Jump ahead 43 years and Bill, having built up a successful engineering business which was now pretty much running itself in Christchurch, was in a much better position to make this river-boat dream a reality. Bill was no stranger to boats and had spent many family holidays exploring the Central Otago Lakes in a 17ft inboard he’d bought after WW2. But the swift, shallow water was a different prospect and he wasted no time trying out some highly unsuccessful ideas. These included a catamaran “tunnel” boat with a propeller mounted in the cavity along its centre (sucked more air than water) then a cathedral hull with a retractable prop below and a Tiger Moth propeller above. Bill’s son Jon recalled how it was his job to sit in the bow with a stick to test the depth of the water to decide if it was deep enough for the prop or rely on the noisy and inefficient airscrew to make their slow progress forward. WWW.BOATMAGS.COM 65
The Jet 32 was one of the most popular jet boat models ever built in NZ.
HANLEY HYDRO-JET Two years later Bill seemed out of ideas until a boat building friend showed him a copy of Popular Mechanics which featured the Hanley Hydro-Jet, a waterjet propulsion system developed in the US for use on firefighting boats. Despite the very small picture and limited information provided by the magazine article, Bill’s team quickly built a prototype copy of Hydro-Jet, which was installed in a 12ft plywood hull with a 100E Ford engine. The principal was simple enough – the engine drove a centrifugal impeller via a bevel gear, with water drawn into the jet unit through a hole in the bottom of the boat and expelled through an elbow under the boat. You’d steer by swiveling the outlet nozzle to either side. At a top speed of just 11mph this boat was only just fast enough to overcome the current, but it was certainly a step in the right direction and Bill learned much about boat handling and reading the river on his many excursions in this little craft. In an attempt to improve performance Bill and 66 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MAY / JUNE 2016
his team altered the jet unit, so the jet stream was expelled out the boat transom above the waterline. This eliminated any appendages from under the hull – meaning even shallower draught – while increasing boat speed to 17mph. The addition of gate steering well aft of the transom improved steering capability too. JETBOATING BEGINS Suddenly the waterjet unit and the shallow river jet boat were viable prospects and Bill began to see commercial opportunities. He hired newly graduated engineer George Davison to draw up plans for this “Quinnat” waterjet and seven units were manufactured and sold around NZ. Jet boating had begun – sort of. There were problems. The bevel gear was noisy and unreliable. George’s solution was to redesign the centrifugal pump to be directly driven by the engine with a longer intake to channel water into the pump. Over 100 of these “Rainbow” jet units were manufactured
and the popularity of jet boating increased further. Most of the early hulls these waterjet units were installed in were either modified prop boats or home-made runabouts, with builders having little understanding of the idiosyncrasies of jet propulsion compared to outboards or propellers. Through trial and error, the pioneering jet boaters quickly learned to adapt their hulls with reduced deadrise (V) and bow stem, while ensuring they were as light but as strong as possible. Plywood was the building material of choice for many of these boats – being relatively inexpensive, light weight and easily repaired on the river bank. The low power and modest speeds of these early boats made them quite forgiving for novice drivers whose mistakes generally didn’t result in much damage (other than to the driver’s pride). Unfortunately, the Rainbow jet unit proved to have several limitations of its own, including the frequent need to prime the impeller and a low tolerance for additional weight. ARRIVAL OF THE AXIAL PUMP George’s next suggestion was to get away from a centrifugal pump and go to an axial flow system, where water is accelerated along a straight line through two or three impellers. Axial pumps move a larger volume of water, meaning they can push more boat weight, and the use of multiple impellers ensures velocity is high enough at the jet stream to accelerate the boat to faster speeds. The “Chinook” two-stage axial flow jet unit first appeared in 1956, followed by a three-
stage unit a year later, and finally Bill Hamilton had a commercially viable waterjet propulsion unit that would handle bigger engines and boats, carry more weight and go faster. Around this time, it was a fortunate coincidence that fiberglass became a viable boat building material and seemed particularly well suited to the rigors of jet boating. Plywood was okay for small low powered boats but bigger, faster boats required something with a bit more strength and durability. Initially, fiberglass was used just to repair holes in a plywood hull, but when it became clear these patches were the strongest part of the hull, jet boats with fiberglass bottoms quickly became the norm. So by the late 1950s Bill Hamilton had developed a commercially viable waterjet unit that was being manufactured en-mass in his Christchurch factory. The next logical step was to showcase the potential of this form of marine propulsion by manufacturing a range of boats specially designed for waterjets and shallow water operation. FIBREGLASS JETBOATS In 1960, the CWF Hamilton Marine Division was opened and began producing fiberglass jet boats, mainly for the domestic market but with the occasional export opportunity. One of the first of these production boats was the popular Jet 30, which traces its origins to the moment pioneering jet boater and
photographer Guy Mannering decided to cut 1m off the stern of his hull to create a lighter and more manoeuvrable boat than his friend Bill Hamilton had at the time. At 4m (13’8”) long and with a deadrise of just 8 degrees, the Jet 30 was a great river explorer. Over 170 were made between 1960 and 1969, and it is one of the most common jet boats to be restored today. Its big brother at the time was the rare Jet 50, (4.9m) it was much roomier and better suited to less challenging rivers. Fewer than 30 of the Jet 50s and 51s were made in the early 1960s but its successors, the Jet 52 and 53,
were very popular models through the 1970s. Over 600 of these were built in variants which included semi and full cabins, and either 15 or 20-deg deadrise to suit rivers or deeper water. The Jet 50 was the first Hamilton Jet boat seen in the US, with one used to scout the lower end of the Grand Canyon in 1959 in preparation for the famous Colorado uprun expedition a year later. THE COLORADO IS BORN It was following the Colorado expedition that next model of Hamilton waterjet unit appeared and opened up yet more

opportunity for jet boating. The Colorado jet unit was a much-simplified design which was cheaper to make, easier to install, more efficient, offered improved steering and reverse and was available in single, two and three stage options by 1965. The extra power input and thrust achievable with the Colorado unit made jet boats a more viable option for water skiing as well as commercial activities such as fishing, diving, ferries, tourism, etc., where higher weight was previously a limiting factor with jet units. The most popular jet boat model appeared in 1969 in the form of the Jet 32, a 4.3m, 10.5deg deadrise hull, powered by a V6 engine and two stage Colorado jet unit. The Jet 32 mould had quite a workout between 1969 and 1977 when over 460 hulls were produced at the Hamilton Marine Division. The Jet 32, like other fiberglass boats of the era including the Jet 20 and Jet 30 MkII, combined a shallow deadrise with a complete lack of planning strakes, which resulted in them steering a lot like a car on ice – drivers would slide through corners rather than turning. OPEN WATER & RACING Hamilton Marine was also producing larger 5.5m cabin boats for the offshore recreational market by the early 1970s. The Jet 83 was popular in both NZ and overseas markets and was joined later by the 6.4m, Jet 210 which featured two overnight berths, a galley and head. Improved multi-stage jet units also opened the door to jet boat racing – first against propdriven boats in open water, then dedicated jet boat races on a variety of rivers and lakes. The first of these all jet boat “marathons” took place in the central North Island in 1970, with 52 starters using a variety of standard recreational jet boat hulls. While largely social at first, the competitive nature of these events quickly took over and organisers were forced to include new boat classes to account for the bigger and more powerful engines being installed – many over 6000cc. In a bid to promote the advantages of 68 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MAY / JUNE 2016
waterjets for deep water vessels Hamiltons had dabbled in the offshore boat racing circuit several years earlier with V-Jet, a Bertram designed hull driven by a 400hp engine and modified 3-stage jet unit. However modifying a hull to suit a jet unit wasn’t ideal, so in 1970, Hamilton Marine built its own 8.5m offshore race boat named “Jetmark”. While this boat showed huge potential, it was dogged by engine issues and was soon retired after winning only a handful of events. Meanwhile on the jet boat marathon scene, Hamilton’s Jet 52 became a popular racing hull - fitted with a big block engine and trim tabs it was more than a match for many prop boats in international races. However, it was soon superseded by the larger and faster Jet 73. The “Sports” version of the Jet 73 won a design award for its classy styling, but as it became more popular for racing a lower profile windscreen was fitted and this Jet 73 “Mexico” version became a Hamilton factory option. Further improvements to the waterjet and increasing popularity of racing and jet sprints spurred Hamilton Marine to produce some deep V compact competition hulls over the years, in both fiberglass and aluminium. The largest and fastest of these was the 182A, one of which is still entered in many of the local marathon races. WELCOME ALLOY HULLS The constant “tinkering” required on these
high spec race boats to eek every last ounce of speed and handling performance out of them resulted in a marked increase in understanding of the effect of LCG, strakes, trim tabs, ballast, etc. on jet boat performance in a range of situations. These developments were then carried through to recreational hull designs as well. However, the demands for specialisation of these racing boats competed with the pressures of producing enough recreational boats at the Hamilton Marine factory, so that as marathon and sprinting jet boat designs evolved to be even faster and more specialised Hamilton Marine quietly withdrew from these smaller segments of the market. As jet boats became faster and jet boaters themselves looked for the next shallow water challenge, it became clear the days of fiberglass hulls were numbered. Delamination of the fiberglass following a rocky impact was all too common and while a skilled DIYer could repair this relatively easily, most recreational jet boaters didn’t have the time, skill or money to keep repairing their boats. Hamilton Marine produced a short run of steel hulled, fibreglassed decked jetboats in the early 1980s. However, while the strength of this material was obvious to potential customers, so too was the additional weight – not to mention the unattractive rusty red colour these hulls inevitably turned. As a result, only around 50, 140M and 141Ms were built (M for metal). However, this number
In 1970, Hamilton Marine built its own 8.5m offshore race boat named “Jetmark”.

may have been higher if not for the increased availability and reducing price of a relatively new boat building material – aluminium. Of course, aluminium had been tried in jet boats before - in the late 1950s Arnold Grundy from Gisborne purchased one of Bill Hamilton’s first Quinnat jet units and installed it in a 5m riveted aluminium hull. However, before the 1980s, aluminium was not readily available in forms that would stand the test of shallow water boating and the effort required to form a hull outweighed any benefits compared to fiberglass. Thanks to the establishment of the Tewai Point smelter in 1971, high-quality aluminium sheet was now readily available and affordable, and it quickly became the material of choice for jet boat builders due to a range of advantages including; • Able to weld several thicknesses together to create strength where required (generally a jet boat hull will have a 10mm delta keel, 8mm each side of this to the chine, then 5mm hull sides). 70 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MAY / JUNE 2016

Light and strong – will dent rather than delaminate. Easy to install the jet unit intake. Easy to repair if damaged. Can be used to create a complete boat or combined with a fiberglass deck. Doesn’t absorb water over time. Low corrosion. Mould not required to form the hull (though Hamilton’s uses a jig pattern for consistency). Easy to customize.
• • While aluminium is not as user-friendly for mass production as fiberglass, this suited the jet boat building industry of the 1980s. After the hey-days of the 70s, a number of factors had reduced the market for jet boats and Hamilton Marine was now largely custom building a small and specialised range of jet boats for either recreation or commercial (tour boat) operators. And this situation has remained to date. Hamilton NZ (formerly the Marine division)
produces a number of standard hull designs from the 132 (4.25m long) to the 161 (5m long), each with an aluminium hull and a fiberglass deck and propelled by a HamiltonJet HJ212 waterjet. These can be customised in a number of ways, including the obvious colour, finish and engine options, but also, some options with seating layout, engine compartment and accessories such as swim platforms, ski poles, bow and stern deck hatches, etc. HamiltonJet’s most popular models today are the 141 and 151s, which offer the best all round capability for family jet boating on rivers and lakes. These boats are renowned for their reliability and performance in a wide range of situations. The full range consists of six boats, from the 132 (4.2m), through to the 191 (5.9m) and all are constructed with alloy hulls and fiberglass decks. Power options vary from 130-300hp and all run the Hamilton HJ212 jet unit. To see a full range of Hamilton Marine jetboats, go to www.hamiltonmarine.com

Recessed into the starboard bulwarks, there is a ip out table that makes a great use of space and eliminates the need to find a place to store the table and a pedestal, and the hassle of se ing it all up. he usual storage compartments are located under the bow seats and this time, they feature a uni ue twist. ayliner inserted removable dividers that separate the compartments into three individual storage spaces. his is a feature we ve never seen before and the utility and functionality of it became immediately apparent as soon as the cushion was removed. he ayliner has an A of . m, a beam of . m and an empty weight of , kg. ith itres of fuel and two people onboard we had a test weight of , kg.

A three-step reboarding ladder is mounted under the starboard uarter, directly in line with the walkthrough to the cockpit. hen it comes to functionality of the stern at anchor, the will be hard to beat no ma er how e pensive the boat. he is a sterndrive-powered boat

Rather, it is located inside the cockpit under the corner of the -shaped seating where it is easier to access and install. o give its customers e tra utility, ayliner makes a couple of optional packages available so the whole family can en oy their favorite water sports.

Going out fishing Grab the fishing gear bin. eading to the beach Grab the bin with the snorkels, masks and frisbees. n addition to being an e cellent gathering spot, the cockpit also serves as a convenient impromptu dining area. A ip up table is recessed into the starboard bulwarks and when deployed is within easy reach of not only the rear of the -shaped seating but the swiveled helm seat, too. he centre storage compartment on the is huge. t runs fore and aft . m, has a depth of . cm and the opening measures cm . cm, easily making the compartment large enough for an additional kneeboard, wakeboard or ski storage. he hatch is held open by a gas assist strut and a latch locks automatically upon closing, as opposed to having to turn it in ust the right direction. his is another li le detail that like and wish all builders would adopt it. he snap-in carpeting on the deck is optional and included in akeland arine s boat.

Hand-cranked manual winches multiply your strength, allowing you to pull a relatively heavy boat against gravity and friction. 78 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MAY / JUNE 2016
SELECTING A
TRAILER WINCH Had a hard time this summer hauling your boat back on the trailer? Then maybe it’s time you considered looking at replacing your winch. We look at some of the options and things you should know.
Trailer winches let you pull your boat onto the trailer while it’s on an inclined launching ramp or beach with relative ease and are mounted on a dedicated winch stand on the trailer tongue. They come with about 10-15m of wire cable, rope or webbing, depending on the size of your boat. With the snap clipped onto the bow eye of the boat, the winch allows you to pull the boat back onto the trailer or allows the boat to slide backwards into the water at a controlled rate. Just how easy all that is will depend on not only the incline of the ramp or as is often the case in New Zealand, the beach, it is also affected by the state of the trailer rollers or pads. Multi rollers, which are relatively standard on all new boat trailers have the advantage of allowing the boat to slide on and off with ease. However, if there is a downside, it’s the boat can slide off too fast if you are not ready for it and either dump the boat on the ramp/ beach or maybe leave you with a nasty bruise or gash on your arm as you try to stop the winch handle. Both these things have happened to me. Once I managed to dump a Smuggler Reefrunner on the ramp at Whangapoua ramp after
unhooking the chain and then releasing the brake on the winch without having the cable secured to a ‘deadman’. You should have a secondary means of holding the boat when you disconnect the brake or hook, so you can control the exit speed of the boat off the trailer. This can be done by attaching a rope to the bollard, down to the winch post (with a couple of turns around to take off the tension) and back to someone standing beside the boat. On another occasion on Manly Beach, I attempted to jerk the boat off the trailer, just as my son unhooked the winch brake. The result was a nasty gash on his arm from a flaying winch handle. Conversely, I have had a hell of job launching (especially off the beach) a boat on pads. This often requires reversing the trailer deeper in the water so you can get the pads wet and the angle isn’t too acute. Not so good for your car or tractor. However if you have an old boat trailer with well-worn keel rollers and just a couple of side guide rollers, you can also find it hard to launch and also keep them lined up on the trailer, if the rollers aren’t spinning freely. Preseason you should grease the roller shafts and make sure they are all free-running.
Changing an old flat keel supported style trailer to a multi-roller set up is not easy or in fact in most cases very impractical. Firstly, to make the multi-rollers work correctly, you need a V-shape trailer and the entry point also needs to be open. If you leave the flat frame as it is and only remove the keel rollers, you’ll end up with a boat that’s so high on the trailer it will probably be even harder to launch and retrieve. The best solution is invest in a new more modern trailer. If you have an electric winch with “power-out” you can control the speed of the launching. Instead of just “free-spooling” with gravity controlling your descent, a winch with this feature uses the motor in reverse for a more controlled launch.
MANUAL VS. ELECTRIC There are two types of winches, manual, which is standard on just about every boat trailer and electric, which is more prevalent on larger trailer boats, especially over 7m. However according to trailer expert, Greg Dutton of DMW Trailers in Hamilton, there are more and more people putting electric winches on boats around 6m and even smaller, simply WWW.BOATMAGS.COM 79
Left: Trailer winches are not tie downs, so having a safety chain to the bow eye is essential.
Above: Multi rollers, which are relatively standard on all new boat trailers have the advantage of allowing the boat to slide on and off with ease.

for the convenience and effortless recovery process. Hand-cranked manual winches multiply your strength, allowing you to pull a relatively heavy boat against gravity and friction. They also have a ratchet to hold the boat at any point on the trailer, so it doesn’t slide back into the water, allowing a normal person to retrieve a boat weighing over 1000 kgs, using a crank about a 30cm long and simple gearing. Larger models have a lower gear ratio to multiply your strength even more and two speeds for extra power. Electric winches use rugged DC motors, which are usually hooked into the tow vehicle’s battery and electrical system. Some people prefer to have a standalone system on the trailer with a separate battery mounted by the winch post. If you do this, then make sure your battery is always fully charged before you head out boating. There are some high-quality electric winches on the market, such as Powerwinch and Superwinch, but there are also some cheap and not so good ones. The secret of a good winch is a powerful electric motor that is fed the power through heavy cables from the battery. Lightweight cables don’t transfer the same amount of power as heavy duty cables 80 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MAY / JUNE 2016
and while the electric motor might be rated high if it can’t get the juice it will stall when the pressures on! However, if the battery fails, most electric winches have a manual retrieve feature, a simple hand crank, in the case of electrical or mechanical failure. Electric winches draw substantial current when retrieving boats. The towing vehicle’s battery provides the power, but a dedicated winch circuit must be added to provide power to the back end of the tow vehicle. If you’re using an electric winch, keep your tow vehicle’s engine running while you’re winching to reduce the drain on your battery. Wiring harnesses are included with electric winches and the science of wiring them up to your vehicle’s 12V DC system is not complicated and an easy DIY, or if that’s not you, any auto or marine electrician will hook it up for you. Using low-stretch steel cable to connect to the boat, some electric winches use a pulley or block at the boat’s bow eye to double the pulling power (which doubles the cable length and halves the retrieval speed). Pulling capacities range from around 700kgs for smaller models to over 4500 kgs for the most powerful models.
HOW MUCH CAPACITY DO YOU NEED? Winches are rated by their weight capacity, not by the length of the boat. Choose a trailer winch to fit the weight of your boat, motor and equipment. Heavier and longer boats require more powerful winches with longer cables. The general rule is to select a winch with a capacity rating of at least 3/4th the combined weight of your boat, motor, fuel and gear. This rule varies depending on a number of factors about your boat and where you launch it. Do you typically launch on steep ramps? Is your trailer equipped with carpeted wood bunks, instead of rollers? If so, the load on the winch will be higher, and you should select a winch with a capacity closer to the actual weight of the fully-equipped boat. Launching ramps that are gently sloped, or trailers equipped with rollers result in less resistance so that you can choose a smaller winch. However, since the difference in price between winch sizes is pretty minimal, you can choose a bigger winch for nearly the same cost. Most trailers have a standard winch assembly bolt pattern, so upgrading to a stronger winch is easy if the current winch is inadequate. SINGLE OR TWO-SPEED? How much cranking resistance is there when you pull your boat? For lighter boats like dinghies, inflatables and small tinnies, a manual winch with a 3:1, 4:1 or 5:1 gear ratio may be all you need. For heavy-duty work, a two-speed winch is a better option. A ratio of 5 to 1 means that you turn the handle five times to get the drum to rotate once. If a two-speed manual winch isn’t strong enough,

CABLE, ROPE OR STRAP? Most electric winches use steel cable because they’re handling larger loads. Better cable winches use a level-wind mechanism (similar to a fishing reel) to prevent cable snarls. Winches with cables also allow you to add a pulley block that will nearly double the weight capacity and cut the speed of the boat’s travel in half. Smaller manual winches designed for lighter boats use polypropylene rope or nylon straps (the same material as used in the seatbelts in your car). Trailer winches are not tie downs, so having a safety chain to the bow eye is essential. It is always good policy to engage a secondary means of securing the boat at the winch, a safety chain at the very least is imperative. A turnbuckle or similar is a wise option not only as a safety device but also a means to take the weight off the winch bushes or bearing whilst travelling, thus avoiding premature winch failure.

ANOTHER ALTERNATIVE There is also another alternative to the traditional winch. Balex is a remote-controlled boat-launching device, invented in a Tauranga garage, that has been developed to take the stress out of the boat ramp experience. The hydraulically powered ABL is installed on trailers and lets users launch and retrieve their boat without getting their feet wet, using a remote control that allows boaties to start, stop or pause the process at the touch of a button. The ABL is aimed at boats in the 5-9 metre range with a boat weight of up to 2500kg and is suitable for both fibreglass and alloy hulls.

The large wheelhouse space has a starboard helm and galley, with an L-shape settee and dinette to port.
HEN YOU TALK TO e perienced boaties about a serious aluminium offshore alloy trailer boat, that s key motivation is to provide a fishing platform for the most demanding fishermen, then the first name that comes to mind is more often than not hite Pointer. uilt in Gisborne by Re riant and his team, hite Pointer oats have been sold for more than years and in that time, they have established an e tremely loyal and e perienced group of owners, not ust in ew ealand, but also Australia and the Pacific slands. hite Pointer certainly don t build the cheapest boat s in town, far from it, but the adage of ou get what you pay for , has never been more appropriate when it comes to the brand. nterestingly, the owner commented that when he looked at what was on the market, hite Pointer offered the best value for money. he hite Pointer website states that every boat built, over in total, has added to the brand s reputation for producing ruthless fishing machines of supreme craftsmanship and performance. f you have ever been aboard a hite Pointer, you know that s a statement that s hard to argue against. he uality, finish and overall presentation of every hite Pointer that leaves the Gisborne factory is e emplary and sets the standards for what is now a 84 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MAY / JUNE 2016
hugely competitive market. have tested a number of hite Pointers over the years, but until went aboard the all new and very customised ustom ruiser, Predator, felt hadn t appreciated the depth of commitment that goes into the boats. Predator is not ust another with a few frills. t s something special and very much a boat that has been owner driven right from the start. hile Predator started as a basic hull, over the design and build stages it morphed into something e traordinary, that breaks new ground for hite Pointer. he most obvious are the wide side decks, which was something the owner specified right from the start. his has meant the cabin interior is slightly narrower, but it hasn t impeded on the space too much inside. he owner also wanted a ush cockpit sole, which meant a redesign of the oor. n Predator, the cockpit sole has been raised about mm and features an obvious crown in the centre. Special hinges were re uired to enable the rear section of the oor to open for access to the olvo Penta and also the forward under oor wet locker. Re commented that the engineering re uired to achieve the perfect deck shape and the deck to gunnel height ratio took some working out, but the result is an e pansive one level oor that works perfectly.
A special feature of Predator is the teak decks, which not only e tend down either side of the cabin, from bow to stern, but also from the cockpit to the wheelhouse and cabin. t took Auckland-based irebird arine over a month to install all the urmese teak, with its black Sika corking. t looks ama ing and lifts the uality image of the boat. A comfortable and somewhat traditional look that is convenient and practical. Another fascinating feature on Predator is the transom cage. he stanchions are milled from a billet for perfect accuracy, with fold down -bars either side of the cage. hese are designed to drop well down into the water while still being at a functional height when secured up in place. his is the first time this new cage system has been used in hite Pointer s series. Another first for the is the game tower, something that is not common on a boat of this si e. t s a very solid structure and built strong enough to stand on the roof, something the kids have already used as a diving platform. A small toggle looks after your steering, plus there s an autopilot and an iPad is used to relay all the electronics to the driver. ot the place you would probably drive the boat at speed, but a great place for spo ing marlin.
The optional game tower is a special feature of Predator.

Warm Interior
aving previously owned a hite Pointer ustom ruiser, the owner had a fair idea of ust how much you can put into the interior and with a lot more e tended cruising in mind, he was after a layout that re ected those re uirements. ith the , he got a far greater accommodation and wheelhouse area and then it was a ma er of making everything fit. o start, the forward accommodation area was made into a four-berth cabin with the addition of pipe berths either side above the lower -berth. here are triple tier storage trays either side and storage under the s uabs, so there is plenty of areas for stowing gear. Another re uirement was a separate head shower compartment, which is a reasonable si e and works well. pposite is a deep pantry storage locker, which the owner tells me is also destined to become another rod storage area. Step up one level and you are in the large wheelhouse space, with a starboard helm and galley, with an -shape se ee and dine e to port. he dine e table drops down, so you have another large sleeping area. Again all available areas that can be used have been used for storage. hile there s no doubt Predator will be used e tensively for fishing, the owner also wanted the interior to be warm and appealing. e has plans to use the boat

Fishing Cockpit
Predator s cockpit is big and open and obviously designed for fishing. here is a large custom made bait station aft, twin live bait tanks with lights, twin tuna tubes, a game chair mount in the cockpit sole, si rod holders set into the teak coamings and dedicated rod storage above and in side lockers. here s even a pot hauler on the starboard side and sockets at hand to plug in your electric reels. our catch can be kept on ice under the sole, in a huge lift out bin. he forward section of the cockpit is slightly raised, with a sink and hand held shower one side and a very large fridge free er on the other. A vertical ladder gives access to the game tower and doubles as a handrail. he lower trays either side have been shaped to stow dive bo les or fenders, which means you don t have to step around them in the cockpit. So you don t have to carry a bucket of water and it s too far to

he owner was looking for a reasonably uick boat so he could get out to some of his favourite fishing spots as far away as the okohinau slands and Great arrier sland on a day trip. hile twin outboards is an option, he went the diesel sterndrive way, with a single olvo Penta . aving had a smaller olvo sterndrive in his hite Pointer , he admi ed to having a real liking for the brand and could see no reason to change. he olvo Penta , the world s most powerful diesel sterndrive, has a common rail fuel in ection system, double overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder, turbocharger, compressor, and aftercooler. he interaction of these, the large swept volume, and the system results in

ASIAS NEW BOOMING MARKET Barry Thompson attended the recent Taiwan International Boat Show and found a growing market not only in export but also domestically. With the recent lifting of recreational boating restrictions in Taiwan, which now allows residents to buy and use pleasure boats, Taiwan is fast emerging as a key market in Asia. While the number of new sailing yachts and power boats is not high, it is growing and if the presence of some of the worlds’ biggest brands at the recent Taiwan International Boat Show is any indication, it is one that needs to be looked at by the marine industry in the future. The 2016 show saw a strong line up of boats not only from the local builders, such as Horizon Yachts, Alexander Marine, Global Yachts and Tachou Shipbuilding, but also international brands such as Jeanneau, Beneteau, Bavaria, Princess, Bavaria, Monte Carlo, and Absolute. Most impressive were the Horizon and Alexander Marine stands that saw 100ft plus superyachts inside. Horizon displayed a 120, an 85 and a 56, while Ocean Alexander was not far behind with a 100, 85 and 72. Impressive stands that attracted international buyers. The 2016 Taiwan International Boat Show, hosted by the Bureau of Foreign Trade and Kaohsiung City Government, and organized by the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), took place in mid-March at the Kaohsiung Exhibition Center and Horizon City Marina. TIBS, Asia’s biggest indoor yacht show with eight main exhibition areas, attracted exhibitors from 10 countries showcasing a full range of products from the yacht industry supply chain, as well as an international industry forum, a
practical yacht design workshop, and over 15 Ocean Forum Series of events. It was reported that over 70,000 people attened the show and that business transactions were brisk during the show. On top of orders for a total of 33 yachts , the show’s largest exhibitor, Horizon Yachts sold an E56, and an F85. Exhibition statistics show that Horizon Yachts, Princess Yachts Taiwan, Monte Fino Yachts, Novatec Yachts Taiwan, TransAsia Airways, Lohas Ocean, Amal Yachting, and Morningstar Boats, were all commissioned with orders. The exhibition featured 63 vessels from Taiwan, Sweden, Italy, UK, Germany, etc., with sizes ranging from 3m to 37m. In addition to yacht manufacturers, the accessory business was also well supported, both by local manufacturers such as Aritex Products, Asia’s number one yacht hardware and accessory manufacturer based in Taiwan, but also products from the USA, Italy, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. “Like the first Taiwan boat show, the 2nd edition was well organised and the exhibition centre is proving to be a great venue. Most of the Australian exhibitors were there to support existing distributors in Taiwan, by showcasing products and getting a better feel for the local marketplace. For the next show I think more will have to be done to get greater visitation by the trade,” says Richard Chapman, President of AIMEX. WWW.BOATMAGS.COM 91

Sea Ray developed the S to provide families looking for a big lu urious bowrider and a do-everything boat in a single-engine package. She comes well e uipped for water sports or cruising and can handle up to people and all their carry-on gear. ptions such as a submersible hydraulic swim platform and an award-winning power tower that folds down with the push of a bu on further enhance the S s versatility.
Since the S is a big bowrider, let s start with her bow. he seating area measures . m across the backrests on the consoles and . m across forward. he side lounges have . m of cushion fore to aft so passengers can stretch out. utboard gunwale trays contain speakers and have -volt power plugs. here s a bracket to mount a table forward and a filler cushion is an available option. he S s bow has good storage capacity starting with the anchor locker beneath a hatch in the foredeck. here s a large locker in the sole that opens on a gas strut and the forward seat bo om cushions can be pulled aside to access small compartments. he side lounge bo om cushions lift up on scissor-style hinges that hold them up so crewmembers can use two hands to deal with gear being stowed or retrieved. he locker in the starboard console is big enough for an adult to crawl inside and there are removable panels that provide access to helm rigging.

RETROFITTING A
SEAKEEPER GYRO Motor Yacht Service Centre recently installed a Seakeeper 9 gyro into, Rhapsody, a Maritimo 60, one of a number of gyro installs they have done using both Seakeeper and Mitsubishi units.
Preparing the mounting area to fit the gyro.
The Seakeeper 9 is designed to achieve 70 to 90% roll reduction on boats up to 35 tons, vessels 50-65’. The Seakeeper 9 requires only modest electrical power, has no outside appendages, and can be installed 100 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MAY / JUNE 2016
off centreline, if necessary. Its computerised control and vacuum technology make it a truly practical, and modern, anti-roll gyro. Owner of Rhapsody, Murray Sinclair said after the install that he was very pleased with the results after an initial run up to the Bay of Islands game fishing and cruising and also some general bottom fishing. “The boat is very stable, I can walk around without looking for hand hold’s when trolling and when stationary it’s like standing on land, I do fish a bit solo and with getting older it gives me a lot more assurance I’m safer than wobbling around, I take my little Dachshund dogs with me which didn’t appreciate getting
wobbled about, now they sit up on the fly bridge as comfy as can be”, says Murray. He added that the actual installation is a credit to Motor Yacht Services and visually its appearance is as it was a factory fit. Murray remarked that he appreciated the tight timeline as the job was done in Feb when he wanted to use the boat, but it was completed as promised. “Motor Yacht Services had also done an underwater extension to the boat and a internal fit out pre Xmas and now with the gyro installation completed we have a excellent overall package thanks to the workmanship of Dean and his team”, he added.
Left: In place almost ready for first trials.
Right: The Seakeeper 9 is designed to achieve 70 to 90% roll reduction on boats up to 35 tons.
The Process The install of the Seakeeper in the Maritimo 60 started with and initial investigation of the lazerette area and confirmation of the available space to the gyro in relation to specified dimensions. Once this was determined, the existing floor structure was removed and the areas where the gyro bearers were to be bonded to the hull were ground. Bearers were then fabricated from, laminating Canadian Yellow Cedar with West System Epoxyto a specified thickness. A stainless steel mounting plate was then bonded onto the bearers and using the Seakeeper jig to ensure correct positioning in relation
to Seakeeper mounting points, a vinylester-bonding compound was then used to fix the bearers to the hull and bulkheads. Once all this was done, all laminated bearer areas were applied with flocoat. The Seakeeper unit was then bolted in place, followed by the installation of the cooling pump intake, exit skin fittings, valves, plumbing and wiring. Motor Yacht Services then fabricated and install new lazerette flooring in and around Seakeeper unit, complete with non-skid to provide a step into lazerette area. The Seakeeper was then fully commissioned before handing the boat back to the owners.

COMPANY PROFILE
TOHATSU’S
history of reliability 2016 marks Tohatsu’s 60th Anniversary of their first outboard. We trace the history of the outboard brand that grew from the aftermath of WW2. The Tohatsu tradition began by building reliable motors for Japanese commercial fishermen who needed an outboard motor that could run for days on end, no matter what the weather. The ocean-tested engineering that enables Tohatsu motors to work under these demanding and often harsh conditions have given Tohatsu a reputation for reliability and toughness. No more than 15 years after WW2, outboards made by Mercury, Johnson and other foreign manufacturers were not allowed to be imported into Japan and it was made all the more difficulty because the foreign currency was not allocated to them. In 1956, Tohatsu introduced their first prototype outboard engine, a 1.5hp, which combined an American made lower unit. The second prototype soon followed and this formed the basis for thet new Tohatsu OB series. Recognising a strong demand from the market, Tohatsu developed a 2hp model in 1959 and in 1961 came the updated OB2B, which became a massive success. Since then, Tohatsu outboard engines have capably served a variety of marketplaces; commercial fishing, marine transport, recreation and competition. In the early 1960s, Tohatsu dominated the Japanese outboard market with their annual sales well exceeding all the competition. In 1961 for example, Tohatsu sold close to 10,000 engines and Yamaha, who were relatively new to the outboard market, just short of 3000 units. In 1962, the sales figures showed Tohatsu dipping to 8500 outboards, with Yamaha already making big inroads into the outboard market with over 4000 engines. While all the small and mid-sized outboard manufacturers other than Tohatsu had learned the features and characteristics of foreignmade outboards, and their nice appearance was their selling point, Tohatsu went down the path of promoting durability and usability. This was a strategic move on the company’s part as with the post-war food shortage, the nation was hungry for fish and so they directed their market at the fishermen.
102 PACIFIC POWERBOAT MAY / JUNE 2016
INTO BANKRUPTCY However, in 1964 it was resolved at a board meeting that Tohatsu would file for bankruptcy, having being unable to clear its debts. However, due to the Reorganisation and Rehabilitation Act, introduced by the US lawmakers into Japan for the purpose of sustaining, reorganising and rehabilitating those companies with financial hardships that were expected to recover, the company was able to trade on. As sales of motorcycles had stagnated, outboard motors had alternatively played a significant role, until the reorganisation plan was applied. A group of companies in the marine industry had joined to hold a boat show in 1962 and it formed the Japan Boating Industry Association in 1970, of which the company building Tohatsu outboards became a founding member. Although severe and continuous competition in the outboard industry had tired out some manufacturers, Tohatsu was quite affirmative
in the development and launching of new products into the market. The B13A (8hp) had become Tohatsu’s longest seller for 15 years (1970-1986). In 1971, new 6hp and 18hp outboards were introduced. As the restrictions that partially limited the importation of foreign outboard motors until then had been removed, competition in the outboard industry in Japan had become more aggressive. In 1971, Tohatsu was judged by the Court to be able to cease the recovery plan, five years and seven months after they went into administration. The experiences of that difficult time brought meaningful lessons for future management. In June 1972, Tokyo Hatsudoki was renamed Tohatsu Corporation. In the mid-70s, Tohatsu took the initiative in the 500cc class outboards to bolster their domestic market. They launched the M35A and a few years later in 1977, they took on the US market. The engine proved extremely popular in racing circles, as well as the recreational market. It proved to be one of
Tohatsu’s most successful models. This was soon followed by new 70hp, 55hp, 25hp, 12hp, 18hp, and 9.9hp engines. The brand was building a diverse product range to cater for a bourgeoning market, both in Japan and overseas. Company profits and sales increase dramatically and company capital was increased to 500 million yen in 1978. By the early 1970s, export sales of Tohatsu outboards exceeded the domestic market and the brand was getting a strong following throughout the world. TOHATSU IN NEW ZEALAND In early 1960 Cory Wright & Salmon Ltd, a Wellington based hardware and electrical distributor introduced the Tohatsu brand of outboards to the New Zealand market. This continued into the late 70,s at which time Bill Rutherford of Aotea Marketing, in Auckland purchased the distribution rights for New Zealand. The business was on sold to Boat City in 1987 and subsequently disposed of in 1989 to the present and current distributors, Diversified Products NZ Ltd in Wellington, who continues as the Tohatsu distributor today. The brand Tohatsu has now been available to the public in New Zealand for over 50 years. ENTER BRUNSWICk In Feb 1988, Tohatsu established a joint venture with Brunswick, builders of the Mercury and Mariner outboards. Brunswick was looking for a Japanese partner who could supply products with advanced technology and productivity. At that time, Tohatsu
reconstructed their facilities at Okaya, with a full-scale assembly line for outboards to 120hp. Brunswick was not the only company to show an interest in Tohatsu, with Nissan also wanted affiliation with Tohatsu for their domestic and worldwide expansion plan. The Brunswick association continues to this day with Mercury Marine outboards from 2.5hp – 30hp built by Tohatsu and badged with the Mercury Marine decals. 2 STROKE OR 4 STROKE When outboards started changing from 2 stroke to 4 stroke, Tohatsu had to make a decision as to which path they would take in the future development of their outboards. However, Tohatsu decided to go both with 2 stroke and 4 stroke and in 1998 added its first four stroke, a 5hp. In 2000 TLDI (2-stroke, low pressure, direct injection) technology was introduced and in 2011 the durable and fuelefficient Everrun series was introduced and geared toward the commercial market. Using the TLDI ( 2-stroke, low-pressure direct injection) system, the company made this advanced 2-stroke fuel injection technology standard on all engines bigger than 40hp. In early 2000, Tohatsu Marine acquired ISO 9002 and since then has also received ISO14001, which standardises environmental management systems. In 2002, Tohatsu America Corp was established and started its distribution in the US, the world’s biggest outboard market. By 2003, the annual output of Tohatsu outboards reached 115,785 units. In January 2005, Tohatsu opened a new
state-of-the-art manufacturing plant in the mountainous area of central Japan that boasts over 370,000 sq. ft. of space and has a production capacity of over 200,000 outboards per year. Tohatsu’s new plant uses technologically advanced machinery that is fully automated to produce reliable outboards with award winning reputations. All Tohatsu outboard motors are manufactured in Japan. Beginning in late 2013, Honda Motor Co. began production of eight outboard models private-labelled for Tohatsu Corporation. The private-label outboards from Honda were eight models; 60, 75, 90, 115, 150, 200, 225 and 250 hp, all of which are also in the current Honda line. Painted blue and bearing the Tohatsu logo, the motors are available in U.S., as well as 17 other countries. The relationship between Honda and Tohatsu is not new. Historically, Honda Marine has a business relationship with Tohatsu in Japan. By adding these larger four-stroke outboards, Tohatsu can now offer a full range of outboards from 2.5 hp to 250 hp. However, unfortunately, these Honda rebadged engines are not available in New Zealand, due to a distributor/dealer arrangement with Honda’s private importer. Today’s Tohatsu range of outboards has come a long way since, 60 years ago when 1956 ushered in the production of Tohatsu Outboards with the “OB-2”, an air-cooled 1.5 hp outboard. Since then, Tohatsu outboard motors have capably served a variety of marketplaces: commercial fishing, marine transport, recreation and competition.
