DIGITAL REVOLUTION FROM STABICRAFT Stabicraft have launched some pretty exciting kit, which will likely change the marine industry in the coming years, and we're not even talking about a new boat design. This is a digital revolution. While Stabicraft's new digital face showcases the core brand story and breath-taking adventure content in the form of a slick new website, it is the company's new 'Build Your Stabi' program that breaks new ground. Build Your Stabi allows potential new owners to experience an interactive 3D boat builder to explore models in detail and build their dream Stabicraft. Once immersed, users can navigate 360 degrees both in and outside of each model, explore features through animation, learn about different packages, then customise and visualise their dream boat and, finally, request a quote. Stabicraft Marketing Manager Daniel Upperton said the research process for buying a new boat is increasingly digital, and it was identified that customers wanted better access to information online. The website phase of the project was partnered with Award-winning Auckland design agency Onfire Design. Managing Director Sam Allan said, "Stabicraft places a lot of emphasis on user-friendly design that is fit for purpose. The Onfire team looked to mimic this ethos, ensuring the website was visually appealing, easy to navigate, and educational. We introduced 'Stabi TV', a central hub for all video content, which meant users could learn about the boats and brand without being led away from the website." STABICRAFT.COM

BOAT TEST_MCLAY 661 CROSSXOVER

The McLay 661 CrossXover is a fantastic reimagination of two of McLay Boats top sellers. It has been designed to fit nicely in the 6.5m boat range that is the holy grail of kiwi boating. Its large enough that it can handle most weather conditions that many kiwis choose to go boating in yet small enough to keep at home and trailer around the country without needing a Mack Truck. Richard Milner headed to the beautiful Lake Wanaka to check it out.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS:

concern grows quickly that it might handle like a barge. I’ll stop you in your tracks here – It didn’t and more on that later. It appeared at this early glance to have all the parts in the right places, heaps of space and gave me the impression I was in for a treat. Lake Wanaka also turned on yet another stellar day. What I mean is these boat tests I keep doing are rarely on snotty days. I need to speak to mother nature about this.

At first, I have to admit I mistook the boat for another McLay at the ramp in Wanaka as the McLay brand certainly has street or perhaps I should say ramp appeal. But a moment or two later it became apparent that the McLay 661 CrossXover was the boat standing proud on the jetty presented in a beautiful blue. The 661 CrossXover is an aluminium hardtop boat that is finished to a great standard. There are no strange welds present that were left because they couldn’t be bothered, no loose ends or unintentionally bare alloy. This alloy boat has the finish that many glass boaties would be proud to show off at the ramp or to their mates. It struck me early on how carefully thought out the McLay 661 CrossXover is. Its wide, heck its impressively wide and the ALLOY BOAT 2022 ISSUE #25

POWER AND PERFORMANCE: We started out heading away from the Ramp with Steve on the helm and man he doesn’t hang about. Man after my own heart. The McLay 661 CrossXover was powered with a Mercury 175 which at first glance appeared a little small. Indeed, my glass 6.5m had a 175 on it when I bought

cruising speed of around 25 knots gave great performance and still meant we got from A to B to J with minimal fuss. Shortly after returning to the factory at Milton, Steve was able to replace the Mercury 150 with a Mercury 225 Pro XS V8 and what a difference. The top speed increased to just shy of 40 knots and the best cruise speed to 31 knots. The V8 is an incredibly smooth, quiet and responsive engine that delivers exceptional fuel economy. The V8 has impressive torque throughout the range and at slow cruise the fuel consumption is not much more than then V6 150. At WOT the Mercury Smartcraft indicated 80.5 lph, but when you drop the rpm back to around 4500 rpm that halved. Trolling speeds is around 10 lph. In my opinion the higher 225hp is the better match and lets you get the best out of this great hull.

it and while it was ok there was but one speed as it was underpowered. Would this be the same I wondered? Steve assured me that the boat would soon to be repowered with a Mercury 225, but with the stock shortages around this engine, the Mercury 150 was used as a starting point. We quickly got on the plane with plenty of power and without the tabs the boat rides slightly bow up but not uncomfortably so and a touch of tabs had the pointy end set dead on its target at the other end of the lake. We wandered out way up the lake sorting out fuel figures and I was quite happy to let someone else drive for a change and it really let me get a sense of the boat. With the Mercury 150, we topped out at just on 33.5 knots and the boat felt nimble yet planted in the water. A happy

he Mercury 225 ProXS V8 is a perfect package for the 661 CrossXover.

The large deck hatch leads to a dropdown bow ladder.

THE DRIVING EXPERIENCE: Enough of being chauffeured around it was time to have a play. On the helm it immediately struck me that it felt like we were on a much larger boat the low dash and rounded hardtop window made the helm area feel expansive. I wasn’t squashed in between the chair, the steering wheel, and my face against the glass like many boats of this size. No, instead there was plenty of room. Naturally I favoured the standing position leaning against the seat. The throttle was sensibly located, and the wheel was comfortable and light. It was apparent that thought had gone into this design. The helm itself was simple with a large MFD, tabs and switches. VHF and stereo are placed in the roof section which makes it easy to locate and allows the whole boat easy access. The overhead configuration isn’t my personal favourite and Steve happily said that being a manufacturer that prides itself on working ALLOY BOAT 2022 ISSUE #25

124

closely with its customers, anything is possible and there is certainly room on the helm area to tuck these items away. I admit I had to sheepishly check that the Mercury was in fact running. Damn these engines are quiet at idle. In my typical fashion it was from zero to WOT and the Mercury 175 accelerated smoothly, and the boat jumped out of the hole in a good time. I do feel slightly more power is needed. Up on the plane with the water about my feet she felt the business. I had earlier concerns that the boat would drive like a barge and handle like a tank like many wider pontoon boats but not the McLay 661 CrossXover. It sat flat in the water but in the turns didn’t hesitate to sink the chine in and corner nicely. For a change this boat felt great at the cruising speed and didn’t give me the desire to constantly put the hammer down. I feel the nice combination of a pleasant helm area, great visibility and a sense of freedom helps this sensation.

COCKPIT AREA: Right down to the working end there is plenty of space for your fishing gear. The side stow areas will tidy those rods away as will the rocket launcher on the top. There is space in the King/ Queen Seats for your tackle or tucked away in the bait board drawer. I could tell the pedigree of McLay Boats has all about fishing. Ok so you don’t fish – no matter, as the large hardtop has ample space for a small soft bottom dinghy or the water toys. The huge cockpit area has plenty of space for entertaining, taking the kids, cuzzies and half the neighbourhood along to boot. The McLay661 Cross Over is over 80mm wider than its predecessor and this small,

POWERBOATMAGAZINE.CO.NZ

yet critical change has made the cockpit area rival even a 7m plus boats. It’s truly fantastic. The King /Queen seat arrangement in this boat had a chilly bin tucked away under the port side and a box storage area on the starboard side. Steve tells me that a small cooker arrangement could be added here. The aft bench seat folds down or can be tucked away when using this space. All the electrics are out of sight but with easy access and off the floor which while simple by design so many get this wrong. The electronic s package was very extensive with Simrad NSS EVO3 with 1kW thru-hull transducer plus a Structurescan transducer. I was impressed with the clarity of the Simrad which showed a clear image all the way to the bottom at 250m. The 661 dash is a urethane pan; with everything a nice flush fit, with controls all easily at hand. There are plenty of hand holds all over the boat so you will never be short of somewhere to hold on. On the transom there is ample space with a shelf that runs all the way across. The outboard doesn’t get in the way, there is a ladder and neat handhold to help you get out of the water. A wrap around railing is available which would add another two fishing positions to this already large dimension mid-sized trailer boat. There is a port sidewalk through with live bait tank underneath and a tidy placement for the walk-through infill.

SUPER STABLE The McLay 661 CrossXover is a pontoon boat. McLay have managed to build that pontoon

D-cell into the hull hiding it away yet benefiting from all the pros of the pontoon design. Added buoyancy, handling in the rough and most importantly stability that no normal boat of this size that doesn’t have tubes or pontoons can offer. Without being rude, two of the three of us on the review were not skinny runts. With the three of us on. one side the boat retained exceptional stability without excessive lean. Yet another reason this McLay 661 CrossXover punches well above its weight.

INSIDE The forward cabin at first glance seems a touch tight but there is enough room for the average Kiwi bloke to be comfortable lying down. There is an infill squab for a cuddly couple or somewhere to send the kids when the fishing is hot, and the whining is hotter. Side windows are large enough to provide some natural light. For the self-aware there is a loo downstairs plumbed in as well. There is a hatch in the roof for air and for forward access. In yet another stroke of genius there is another window in the hatch that provides a good amount of natural light. A lockable sliding door finishes it off. It really is quite the package. In the forward deck area there is a step-down ladder arrangement for the lake and river boaties and to be fair I’d like to install one on my boat for the Gulf too. There is room for a drum winch in the anchor locker. The side decks have a sensible amount of space to walk around from the cockpit and even with my large feet this was no problem. The light bar was a nice touch and I imagine for late night adventurers this makes the typical 4 LED light

quiver in its boots. Like everywhere else it all makes perfect sense. Yet again it proves that McLay has been around the traps for some time.

The rear bench seat folds out of the way when you need the fishing space.

WHAT DO I REALLY THINK Since I own a 6.5m boat and most of my family boating has been done in this range it’s a little unfair to have me test this boat. It means I have quite high expectations. Steve can rest easy as I can say I’m suitably impressed. The finish is good, there is carpet and deck tread where it is meant to be. Fittings aren’t carelessly added over these surfaces. Equipment is where it should be. The helm and its curved windscreen are a real winner for me. The hard top pillars aren’t enormous and don’t take away too much vision. The helm is functional. I like that. With the 175hp outboard this McLay 661 CrossXover is a good fit. It has enough power, economy and get out of jail performance. I do feel however that going to the 225 hp V8 is the right option and is a perfect marriage. That extra power enables the boat to lift its bum and let all the others in its class know who is boss. The cockpit area is large it’s very large and very usable. If you are fishing, exploring our great marine playgrounds, using it for work or towing water toys, the McLay 661 CrossXover should be a must on your shopping list.

A wrap around railing is available which would add another two fishing positions.

WHICH IS BETTER: 4 BLADES OR 3?

Which is better 4 BLADES OR 3 BLADES? For many years now, boaters have debated the question of 4-blade propellers versus those with 3-blades. The traditional argument is that 4-blade props are slow and 3-blades are fast, end of discussion. Today, new trends in the marine marketplace, constantly fluctuating fuel prices, and shifting economic times are causing boaters to take a second look at this old debate. Speed is now a much smaller part of the boating equation and now practical, real-world performance is the name of the game for most people. Which props should you be using, 4-blade or 3? The world’s emphasis on economy and efficiency is causing everyone to take a second look at 4-bladed props. In the beginning, the idea that 4-bladed props were slower than those with 3 blades was true to a certain extent, but that is because many of those 4-blades were not designed with speed in mind. Instead, the few designs that were available were intended to cure handling issues such as ventilation, cornering blowout, motor elevation requirements, and hole-shot issues. Without many options in blade design, and very few of them truly intended to be particularly fast, the 4-blade got branded as slow, while their other performance benefits were largely dismissed. By contrast, today’s 4-blade propeller designs have evolved into both all-purpose and highly specialized geometries. These propellers can be tailored not only to address those traditional handling issues but can also be tailored to improve a boat’s performance envelope, which can, in some cases, even include speed.

WHICH IS BETTER: 4 BLADES OR 3?

Rake angle improves the ability of the propeller to operate more effectively in a cavitating or ventilating situation.

In short, a 4-blade propeller can improve all those characteristics that make for practical, all-around boat performance. Four-blade props usually have a lower pitch to keep the rpms the same as a 3-blade. But are 4-Blades Slow? So, why might a 4-blade generally be slower than its 3-blade counterpart? To be honest, many 3-blade/4-blade speed comparisons are simply not fair. That’s because the respective propellers in question are simply different styles, designed with different purposes in mind— different diameters, rakes, cupping, Cupping effectively and blade shapes. increases the pitch size. If however, for comparison purposes, we take two propellers, identical in design (blade shape, diameter, rake, cup, etc.) that are appropriate for a given application, and simply add a propeller blade, we get a truer representation of just where the difference lies. The addition of the extra blade causes increased drag, which, in turn, requires more horsepower, in order to achieve the same rpm. Since the horsepower is limited, the rpms drop, and the speed will tend to drop with it. This is why, when going from a 3-blade to a 4-blade, the pitch is dropped an inch, or more, in order to keep rpm parity. It is this difference in pitch that causes any potential speed differentials between the 3-blade and the 4.

WHICH IS BETTER: 4 BLADES OR 3?

An easy explanation of pitch – the distance the propeller moves forward, through one complete revolution.

Three blades can take a bigger bite.

REASONS FOR 3 BLADES Three-blade props can take a bigger bite but have their limitations. As to any actual speed loss between the two, in many cases, it is actually quite small (generally 1-3 mph). The reason is, although the 4-blade is one-inch lower in pitch, it runs more efficiently than its 3-blade competitor, allowing

it to run closer to its theoretical speed than the 3-blade, thereby, effectively closing the gap presented by the pitch differential. As we have learned more about what makes a propeller work and not work, and about how boats and motors perform and do not perform, we have designed propellers that address the inherent strengths and weaknesses of each of these respective pieces of the puzzle.

ALLOY BOAT 2022 ISSUE #25

These designs have become even more important as more and more specialised boat designs and motor trends have entered the marketplace and as new trends and economic challenges arise. All that said, the most important part of the equation remains is what is your performance expectation and satisfaction. So, the goal is to match the propeller to the boat, motor, and as always, having the right tool for the right job.

RETIRING THE TILLER TILLER TO WHEEL

The new driving position is more comfortable than the previous tiller.

ALLOY BOAT 2022 ISSUE #25

POWERBOATMAGAZINE.CO.NZ

After five seasons of driving my McLay 480 Fortress with a tiller, I finally changed and went to a conventional steering wheel. While I loved driving the boat with a Mercury Big Tiller, bolted up to various Mercury outboards, I felt it was time for a change. BY BARRY THOMPSON When I first took delivery of my McLay straight after the 2015 Hutchwilco NZ Boat Show, it was powered by a tiller steer Mercury 60hp outboard. I liked the setup as I didn't need a centre console that I always felt took up valuable fishing space. After five years, I am still of that opinion and love the side console-setup. The power was originally a Mercury 60 with a standard tiller, which was fine. However, as I increased the engine's horsepower and with it the boat's speed, I found at a specific trim, there was a lot of pressure exerted from the tiller. Today I have a Mercury 90 4 S, which is probably a bit of an overkill, but the boat handles it well. I also upgraded to the Mercury Big Tiller, which has all the trim, tilt, start, stop and gears on the handle. Great piece of kit that is a must if you are running a larger engine. Last year I replaced the Big Tiller with Mercury Marine's new multi-function tiller, their most feature-packed tiller arm ever. While a tiller steer is not the option for everyone, I have found it ideal for my boating style over the past few years. Mercury's first Big Tiller was released in 2007 and was rated for up to 250 hp. The diecast aluminium arm was designed to withstand a 400-pound load, and it was a huge success for Mercury. After 13 years, it was retired, and its predecessor is packed full of features, which make it one of the most advanced outboard tillers on the market.

REGULAR HELM

C

hanging to a standard steering system was easy as I already had a side console on the boat. A few seasons back, I brought a console from McLay Boats, so I had somewhere to mount the Humminbird Helix 9 sounder, a glove box and a couple of Mercury instruments. Previously I had made my own console, and while it worked well, it was looking a little worse for wear after a few seasons. The new side console was an easy fit, although I lowered it down somewhat from how they are typically mounted in the McLay Fortress because I was not running a steering wheel. Well, not until now. When changing to a steering wheel, the first alteration was to move the helm forward 120mm, so I had enough space behind for the wheel and the new helm seat. I kept the low profile, and you can hardly see the helm or wheel from a side view. I replaced the plastic seat with a Springfield moulded seat on a low-profile sliding base. I also needed a new pedestal to set the seat up at the right height. While the driving position is probably lower than you would typically find in a boat this size, I like it, and it has proven a comfortable driving position.

TILLER TO WHEEL

SEASTAR HELM

N

in the garage. I fixed it with rivnuts so it would be easy to remove if I needed to get into the shelf space behind it and covered it in black paint. Once everything was in place, I got the team at Mercury Marine to attach up all the steering hoses and control cables to make sure it was done right. And it was. The boat is a breeze to drive, and I love it. Well, that's when I can get out between lousy weather and the fact that I had a total knee replacement at the beginning of January, so I did not go boating for two months. I can't wait to get back out there and into those fish.

ext, I needed thing to sort out the right helm. That was easy as I asked McLay what they ran in their side console Fortress and got the same make and model. A quick call to BLA, the distributors for the Dometic Seastar range and I soon had a Dometic SeaStar hydraulic system complete with a Gussi 310 soft grip steering wheel. The SeaStar Hydraulic steering system is designed to provide that extra margin of muscle when needed and easily handles outboard, sterndrive and inboard engines in boats up to 15m. Perfect match for my setup. The system selection, installation and service are substantially simplified with just three major components – helm, cylinder and tube or hose. SeaStar has a comprehensive range of available cylinders to handle various steering applications, and as my boat is so light, I only needed the fundamental Baystar system. The BayStar hydraulic steering is rated up to max 150HP. It consists of a super low friction helm for smooth, comfortable steering a balanced cylinder–featuring a compact design that fits most splashwells. And what a difference! No more feedback on the tiller with precision control. The lack of steering effort, due to considerably no doubt to Seastar's patented No FeedBack steering lock valves, has transformed my driving. I also no longer have to sit a little sideways when driving, with the fixed helm now allowing me to face straight ahead. So it feels more natural and saver. I always ran with the kill switch attached to my wrist in the past, as if I let the tiller go, the boat would flick sideways so fast I could easily be thrown out. Even though I have a steering wheel and positive helm, I still do the same when I let the wheel go, especially when I am on my own. The lower steering effort has been a winner, and I am pushing the boat a little harder in the choppy water than I did with the tiller. The Mercury control unit was an easy fit to a side panel that I fashioned from a piece of alloy I had

The new Springfield seat is fully adjustable and fits snugly in the space behind the console.

I have left the console flush with the coaming as I had in the tiller steer arrangement.

ALLOY BOAT 2022 ISSUE #25

POWERBOATMAGAZINE.CO.NZ

Built as a replacement for the hugely successful Stabicraft 1410, the all new 1450 is everything the 1410 was but better. Barry Thompson checks out this awesome little boat. ABSOLUTE BEAST

When Stabicraft released the first 1410 a few years ago they laid the seed for what was to become one of their most successful boats ever. Boaties loved the openness, stability, layout and the ability of the boat to be ideal for whatever task it was assigned. Inshore fishing, towing the family on water toys, adventure boating, diving, or cruising inland waterways, the Stabicraft 1410 had all the answers. Like every model, no matter how successful there is always room for improvement, so when in 2020 Stabicraft introduced the 1450 as the 1410’s replacement, they knew they had something that was going to be a winner. And they were not wrong. Currently it is the biggest selling model in the Stabicraft range and, it is set to supersede the success of the 1410.

One certainly doesn’t need to be a rocket It has been described as an absolute beast of a boat, especially amongst the fishing fraternity. If you are looking for a boat to handle some choppy water and venture a bit further offshore, then don’t let the size of the 1450 (4.42m) scare you off. It already has a reputation for being a great performer in choppy sea conditions, albeit under 5m. However, it still is a small open boat so I would not recommend buying it if you are into a lot of blue water boating. Size does matter and Stabicraft have plenty more models to cater for that sector of the market. Hull construction for the 1450 is 3mm hull and tube thickness, with a dry weight of around 290kg and a tow eight

of approx 720kgs. The hull is an 120mm in length and 190mm of beam over the 1410. The sides of the 1450 have a height of 680mm, with the same wide flat side decks retained. The pontoons are foam filled for maximum safety and buoyancy with the boat carrying the CPC Floatation Certification, so technically it will not sink even when filled with water. The deck is also self-draining. The 1450 features Stabicraft’s patented Stabicraft’s Arrow Pontoon design which is designed to soften the ride. The company say that by raking back the welds on each pontoon join there is a smoother transition where the water comes up off the hull and meets the pontoon, as the wetted surface area is much smaller. Wide overhangs and chines add to the dryness of the boat.

SIDE CONSOLE Personally, I favour side console boats as you don’t encroach too much into the working space of the cockpit. When I drove the 1450 on my own, in choppy water with a single 25 litre tote tank, I had to make sure the tank was on the port side below the transom, so as to achieve a level trim. Stabicraft offer the 1450 Frontier as their console model, but if you still want

ALLOY BOAT 2022 ISSUE #25

142

more open space, then the boat is sold as the Explorer for tiller steer outboard power. The 1450 Frontier Sportfish comes with a side console and upholstered seat as standard as well as an 70L Icey-Tek chilly bin with a padded seat. If you want to step up then Stabicraft offer the 1450 Frontier Profish, which has additional stainless steel rodholders, belting up paint, dash windscreen and dual boarding platforms all as standard features. Coupled with optional features like port side dash and Fish Pro seats, the 1450 Frontier Profish is ready to compete with much larger boats. The base price difference between the 1450 Sportfish and the 1450 Profish is around $4000, depending on the power choice.

OPEN COCKPIT The extra space in the 1450 is amazing and everywhere is used. Forward there is loads of seating and storage and a high platform for casting. Extra wide aft side decks can be utilised as seating or the perfect place to sit with your SCUBA gear on before rolling over the side. The anchor tackle is kept in a bin under the forward deck. The 1450 Frontier powder coated side console is a hard-wearing, compact unit that gives the driver comfort and visibility. The console is mounted to the starboard coaming and up off the floor, keeping the deck space largely unobstructed and allowing you to carry a large amount of gear. The deck comes standard in alloy chequer plate with a faux teak optional. This is also ideal for the wide side decks. Boarding steps either side of the high transom make access to and from the cockpit a breeze, ideal for divers and swimmers. There is enough space to fit an after-market live-bait tank. The

POWERBOATMAGAZINE.CO.NZ

1450 comes with eight rod holders and of course you can still add more. Game poles are also popular.

POCKET ROCKET It would be far to say that the 1450 Frontier punches well above it’s weight and has the performance and handling of bigger boats. Toss it around and the hull hangs on like on rails. It turns flat and with extra weight in the bow from adding something like a trolling motor, the hull takes advantage of the deep forefoot. With 50 hp you can expect great economy with figures like 4000rpm @ 31 km/h and 3.9 km/l. With a standard 25 litre tote tank that gives you nearly 100 km/h range. Certainly a great boat in the sub 5m range that has the versatility to suit most needs.

The 1450 features Stabicraft’s patented Stabicraft’s Arrow Pontoon design which is designed to soften the ride.

ELECTR The development of electric outboards is growing at breakneck speed and doesn’t look like slowing down anytime soon. Maybe not quite as rampant as the automotive industry, we are still only seeing a fraction of the electric motor brands in New Zealand. If anything is holding back its acceptance into the recreational market, it’s batteries. But as Ron Czerniak said in last year’s article, battery development is quickly catching up. As the automotive industry makes lighter and longer-lasting batteries for satisfying the car market, the marine industry benefits from that research. In the Sept-Oct 2021 issue of Alloy Boat, we published a Buyers Guide to electric outboards and thrusters. The list comprised 36 models from seven manufacturers, although three have yet to find their way into the Kiwi market. After some more research, we have discovered more brands available on the local market, including some new rim and pod drive ‘outboards’ that were not available previously. Electric outboards fall into three categories: standard electric outboard, rim drives, and pod drives. The latter two are setting new standards when it comes to fossil-free power. The electric motor is sealed in an underwater casing or housed above the waterline under a cowling, much like a standard

outboard. Keeping the motor below the water helps with cooling and makes an already quiet engine virtually silent. The downside to electric outboard motors is that they are more vulnerable to water ingress if the seals get damaged. Above the waterline, the motor is easier to access, but the transmission is via a gearbox rather than a direct drive, so there will be some efficiency loss and a little more noise. However, this configuration allows much larger electric outboard motors to be installed as no submersible casing is required, such as the 150-180hp equivalent engines from Vision and Evoy.

Pod drives such as the experimental BlueNav Bluespin electric propulsion system is a clever invention that for now will help us transition from the ice age to the electric generation.

The rim drive engine, such as the Yamaha Hamo, uses the outer part of the tunnel as the stator and the inner section as the rotor. This gives just a single moving part, with all the electrical components ‘potted’ in resin to be completely watertight. Pod drives such as the experimental BlueNav Bluespin electric propulsion system is a clever invention that, for now, will help us transition from the ICE age to the Electric Age, which is probably a decade or so away. It creates an easy-to-retrofit hybrid system, but the inventor points out it is also ideal for new boat builders to incorporate in their boats at a low cost.

The unit consists of a retractable electric motor that lets a captain switch from fossil fuel to electric propulsion at the touch of a button. The shaftless, gearless motor is housed in the ring, with the rotor sitting within the surrounding stator that is also ring-shaped and creates prodigious torque. Since the blades are mounted to the rotor ring, there are no tip vortices to make noise and create drag. So what’s new in the world of electric propulsion since we brought you our detailed comparison less than 12 months ago?

MERCURY AVIATOR

M

ercury Marine has announced its Aviator electric outboard concept, representing Mercury’s next step in marine innovation, advanced technology and engineering. The electric outboard concept was displayed for the first time during the recent Miami International Boat Show and is progressing the company toward the formal release of electric outboard products later in 2022 and 2023. The specifications for the first Aviator have yet to be revealed, but it looks to be a low-horsepower, easily transportable engine intended for smaller boats. The removable and interchangeable battery system within the hood allows for easy and fast recharging. An integrated screen prominently displays the battery level. Aviator creates a new boating experience for Mercury’s global customers combining an investment in electrification with more than 80 years of expertise in the marine industry. Aviator advances Mercury’s commitment to sustainability by offering the prospect of boating with zero direct emissions. Mercury is also using electrification to make boating more accessible with features such as swappable batteries and enhanced portability. For those in Australia, New Zealand and South Pacific keen to look at the new concept, it’s expected that the Aviator concept will be displayed in the region in 2022.

YAMAHA HARMO

Y

amaha Marine, well-known for its outboard engines ranging from 2.5 to 450hp, has started mass production of its Harmo electric marine engine. The electric motor uses revolutionary electromagnetic-lineal technology, which allows for very high torque, suitable for all Harmo – the outboard that looks like a sterndrive. Utilising a rim drive electric motor that turns a large four-blade impeller, Harmo mounts to the outside of the boat transom in a low-profile housing that more closely resembles a sterndrive than a traditional outboard. Integrated digital electric steering (DES) and Yamaha’s Helm Master EX joystick provide a 140-degree total steering angle for what the company describes as exceptional handling and control. The system can rotate a single-engine boat within its length and allow true lateral operation in a twin-motor configuration. A 74-degree tilt angle helps keep the impeller clear of the water when not in use. Powered by a high-yield, low-drag 3.7kW motor and 48V battery, Yamaha’s Harmo generates 225 pounds of static thrust, giving it a power output roughly equivalent to a 9.9hp gasoline outboard. Run time is dictated by battery number, size and type. Available in single or twin motor configurations, the Harmo motor unit weighs 121 pounds, and the system can effectively manoeuvre boats up to 32ft in most conditions.

EZ OUTBOARD

E

lectric outboards are growing in stature and acceptance. One such brand which has only recently been available in New Zealand is the EZ Outboard. E stands for electric propulsion, Z for zero pollution. The new designs consider the installation compatibility, Teleflex remote control and exchangeable propellers, compatible with conventional gasoline outboards. The BLDC motors and controllers are optimally designed for electric outboards with motor speed up to 2800rpm matching standard propellers without speed reduction gears. The motor controllers use sinewave technology for smooth control. They are programmable via PC to set up speed limits, maximum current, lower voltage limit as you wish to meet your needs and local authority’s regulations.

EZ outboards “S” series is designed to cater to both the sports and commercial market. Optimised for power, the “S” series delivers a similar performance to a two-stroke. The S20 outboard, the biggest in the range, is ideal for lightweight, planning speed boats and can push a heavy displacement boat of up to ten tonnes. It has a net weight of 48 kg. The second range of motors from EZ Outboard is the “X” Series, very light in weight (20 - 24kg) and quick to set up, the propeller speeds are between 20002600rpm. The innovative and unique MOX9 motor developed especially for the X series is located in a fully sealed underwater pod. It drives the propeller via magnetic induction without a shaft. Because there is no physical link between the propeller and the motor, there is no possibility of leaks, nor can it be easily damaged by a rope

wrap or grounding since the lightweight propeller can stop instantly without stopping the motor. All EZ outboards support either tiller steering with speed control or remote speed control and steering, compatible with standard Teleflex cable steering. It can be ordered in both tillersteer or remote steer versions and can easily be converted between the two by purchasing the other steering kit. Distributed in New Zealand by The New Zealand Electric Boat Co (electric boat.co.nz), the EZ outboard can be supplied with various suitable batteries.

With a power range of 4kW to 30kW, equal to the propulsive power of 8HP to 40HP and realistic run times. They are easy to operate, quiet, emissionfree and virtually maintenance-free over the engine’s life. The E Class outboards are available in long or short shaft External batteries can be charged by solar for off-grid boating. The quality of the product and the diverse range allows them to offer electric outboards for all hull designs, from planing hulls to high torque engines for semidisplacement and displacement vessels. The top of the line 20kWUltra electric outboard has a total weight of 8kg and utilises the casing of a two-stroke 40hpwith electric trim and tilt and forward controls as standard. Twist grip throttles are also available on 4kW to 20kW models At the other end, the 4kW electric outboard weighs 30 kgs and use the casing of 2 stroke 8hp outboard. You have the option of programming this engine between 3kW and 4kW, depending on speed and run time requirements. Looking for something in between, there is the 6kW which is the equivalent of 15hp and weighs in at 43 kgs or the 10kW coming in at 45 kgs and offering similar performance to a 20hp outboard. E Class outboards suggest a battery for a minimum of 30 minutes at wide-open throttle, which is about 90 minutes at mixed speeds as an entry-level package. But you can buy whatever battery combination you need. Australian made to suit harsh NZ/Australian conditions and made possible due to the experience of innovator Ron Kelly, an automotive engineer with a long history as a boatbuilder and Surf Lifesaving manufacturer.

TEMO ANNOUNCES TEMO 1000

rench manufacturer Temo has launched a new 1000 W model portable electric motor, intended for dinghies and sailboats up to 8m. After the success of the Temo 450, the brand’s first portable electric motor, the French manufacturer of electric outboards for pleasure boats has announced the arrival of a new model, the Temo 1000. Intended for dinghies up to six people and sailboats up to 8m, it should be available in March 2023. For this new motor with an electric power of 1,000 W, Temo announces a power at the propeller of 500 W and a static thrust of 28 kg. The manufacturer has completely revised the architecture of the product compared to the Temo 450.

The Temo 1000 resembles a thick rudder profile, with a simple base at the bottom. The aluminum profile and the overall design means a total weight of 13 kg, including 5 kg of battery. The motor battery system is integrated into the vertical profile. It connects automatically to the insert with an IP67 waterproof connector. With a capacity of 20 Ah, it is interchangeable. The recharge time is 5 hours at 220 V and 12 hours at 12 V. The announced autonomy at full power is 45 minutes. The engine integrates a tiller that retracts inside the profile. Depending on the boat, the Temo 1000 can be used to propel the boat, while remaining in the axis, fixed on a plate screwed to the deck, without requiring a chair. To get rid of the choice of shaft length, long or short, the Temo 1000 is equipped with a vertical rail that allows to adjust the height of the propeller to the hull. It remains to be seen how this will really impact the comfort of the helmsman.

The notion of a walk-around configuration in a trailerboat invariably conjures up mind-images of a veritable ‘floating phone box’. As Barry Tyler discovered during a recent sojourn in the latest Extreme 915 Walk Around example, there are still however, those designers around who can address the conundrum admirably, by providing walkways to the bow – and, an acceptably-wide and therefore bonafide cabin/saloon/helm area.

A quiet achiever, the Extreme 915 WA performed and handled well.

range that now tops out at over 11m. Our staff of 90 now produce upwards of 300 boats annually, still very much adhering to the owner’s original boat-building philosophy, of building boats entirely built to purpose,” Cranswick enthused. The other key aspect of any successful enterprise is of course a good capable, enthusiastic dealer network; of the ilk of in this instance, Tauranga mega-marine-dealer Master Tech Marine. MD Karl Rastrick doesn’t just order a barebones boating package, he orders a boat to be built by Extreme Boats, that is spec’d to a level deliberately befitting the size and particular guise of the vessel concerned – nothing less. This particular Extreme 915 Walk Around model is a family boat, as well as a weekender, as well as a bonafide game boat, all in the one package. Therefore, as Rastrick maintains, “You need to dress the boat up accordingly, so it is fit for purpose,” he emphasised.

That’s a big call for sure, so you can bet one of my first ‘chores’ on stepping aboard the Extreme 915 Walk Around, was to discover how in fact they managed to fit it all in, and still look proportionately acceptable. Commencing their boatbuilding journey on the outskirts of Whakatane, Extreme Boats originally built plate boats in the bread-and-butter 5-6m range. Their point of difference even back then was to build boats with good bluewater sea-keeping abilities, as accurately and well spec’d and presented as they possibly could be – extreme boats! As Extreme Boat’s Sales and Marketing Manager Mat Cranswick explained, “Our point of difference if you like, is to build our boats unashamedly to the level of specification and styling a discerning boater requires. Attention to detail, is paramount. “You build them what they want, but in a ‘production’ as against a ‘custom’ level of build specification. As such, we have over the years been able to seamlessly transition from the smaller boats, into an ever-increasing trailerboat size-

A spacious saloon/ helm area, despite the ‘walk-around’ configuration.

SERIOUS SPECIFICATION One certainly doesn’t need to be a rocket scientist to appreciate the influence of a person like Rastrick, for our test boat, the Extreme 915 Walk Around, was one hell of a ‘serious’ boat. It was extreme in every way, and the more I looked, the more I discovered! The sheer size of course demands instant attention as of right, but add a very upmarket paint finish, nice well-balanced lines, eyecatching teak-styled floor and coaming protection and a plethora of high-specification creature-comfort ‘features’ scattered throughout – and you soon realise this boat is a little different from the ‘norm’. The 915 model is available in two configurations, the ‘Game King’ and this ‘Walk Around’. Strength and durability are paramount for the company, so naturally they start accordingly, with a hull built for purpose. The standard bottom thickness is a healthy 6mm, but appreciating the fact this may well be utilised as a Gamefisher also, Rastrick opted for an 8mm bottom – figuratively, an ice-breaker. Interestingly too, Extreme Boats have made no attempt whatsoever to hide any of the

structural welds, both inside or out. As you might appreciate, you can only get away with that aspect, when the welds are aesthetically acceptable. The 19-degree variable deadrise hull was devoid of any planing strakes. Yet, as we discovered during our sea trial, there was still very good ‘lift’ provided by the actual underhull shape, along with the generous-sized reverse chines. Another contributor to hull performance, was undoubtably the quite meagre weight factor. Complete with the Suzuki outboard, the rather striking triple-axle aluminium trailer and even half-ships of fuel, the weigh-bridge screen ticked over at approximately 3450kg – importantly, under the 3500kg towing threshold!

SAFETY IN THE WALK AROUND From street level it was hard to gauge, but from the moment I stepped aboard I could tell some serious thought (and innovation) had gone into addressing what is so often a mostcontentious issue in trailerboats of this particular configuration. Considering the generous beam of the helm/

POWERBOATMAGAZINE.CO.NZ

saloon level, I was taken aback by the actual width of these walkways each side of the main cabin structure. No need to walk sideways here; and the walk forward was made even easier by the sturdy, conveniently-placed virtually full-length grab rails. These were around the parameters of the vessel and along the top of the hardtop. The walk-around is a cross-over style of boat, and therefore purpose-designed for family days, water- skiing and/or sport fishing. At the bow, features included a mount for an electric motor, an anchoring bollard and short fairlead, and a tell-tale deck cavity which ultimately will house a Savwinch drum winch (yet another shipping delay). This area would be great for the kids on board plus it certainly helps spread the passengers out if you have a crowd on board. And, it is great for the mundane chores such as washing the boat, properly! Of particular note here were the well-engineered grates at the cockpit end of the walkways, which cleverly re-directed and thus prevented any water volume from entering the cockpit. The hardtop itself, as already alluded to was

aesthetically pleasing to the eye; window shapes and sizes, and the lines and angles of the structure itself, flowed nicely into each other. The actual roof-top however, offered perhaps the biggest clue to the level of specification. The Raymarine radar dome, the mounting bases for the Viper outrigger game poles, the near full-width LED deck-lighting, the twin hatches (for gamefish-spotting), the rod racks and the safety rails, were impressive!

SPACIOUS LIVING It may seem strange/irrelevant to refer to a trailerboat as having a saloon. However, in the true context of the ideal, any enclosed space that features a stove, bench, sink, running water (it features a 55-litre underfloor freshwater tank), table, seating, cupboards, a drop-down berth, no matter how grandiose or conversely, small – earns the right to have it described as a ‘saloon’ The 915 features all this. For the benefit of my observations then, I will refer to this area as the saloon-cum-helm station, for quite obviously the helm station was included in here also. And again, when I talk quality and appropriate seriousness of

A huge cockpit ready for some serious fishermen. The galley was a step above what you would traditionally expect in a sport-fisher. A serious dash with everything easily at hand. The bow area provides good access for the sport-fisherman, and the thrill-seeker’ bowriders’.

specification this area too, excelled. Taking pride of place on the dash was a Raymarine electronics package of radar, engine information, sounder, fishfinder and GPS on not one, but twin 12-inch monitors. The sounder, fishfinder, water temp and the other myriad of underwater information, were gathered courtesy of the 1 kW through-hull transducer, appear on one screen. Likewise for the mechanicals. While outboard motor performance and gear selection is controlled by ‘fly-by-wire’ remote controls to the motor, the actual NMEA information highway of other matters such as fuel management, speed, temperatures, pressures performance and ranges, appears on the other screen. The constant theme of providing the best specification possible, flowed through to the steering, which is top of the range Ultraflex Electric/hydraulic, and to the trim tabs located on the dash also, which are Lectrotab electric/ hydraulic. Creature comforts in this helm/saloon area include sliding side windows for ventilation,

a single windscreen wiper, and a very-wellpresented seating package. The captain has the full wrap-around ‘skipper’s chair’, with ‘king/ queen’ passengers seat modules behind this, and to portside as well. The higher king level of this portside seat was in fact a full-length lounge, that with the removal of the back-rest, transformed into an outside single berth. Further accommodation for three was provided in the for’ard fully-lined and securely-lockable cabin area. This full-width cabin berth is certainly big enough to cater for three – but, and it’s a big but - you would certainly have to be very good friends with the third person. Alternatively, it more than capably handled a twin-berth situation, with, room to move around. Removing the centre squab of this berth provided access to the underfloor electric head situated between the two berths. Cabin lighting was provided, overhead. All in all, like the saloon, this lockable cabin was a very well-presented area which was nicely lined, and boasted quality squab covers.

THE WORKING AREA Everything aspect of the cockpit literally oozed professionalism. But, three key aspects especially pleased me. Holding pole-position for me, was the extensive use of the composite SeaDek teak-look-alike protective pads. Often this ‘teak thing’ can appear overdone, especially as in this instance these pads were up the walkways, in the cockpit, in the saloon, on the internal face and on top of the coamings, and on the rear ‘Portofino’ boarding platform. In your face then, yes - but the fact these were moderated by a contrasting (to the hull decks and hardtop) light grey rather than teak colouring, and, by the fact they were CAD CAM designed and cut – elevated them into the 5-star category of visionary delight.

ALLOY BOAT 2022 ISSUE #25

BOAT TEST_EXTREME 915 WA Items two and three that caught me eye, firstly were the 360-degree swivelling rod holders inserted three each side, into the coaming tops. The other was the knee-activated saltwater pump-switch on the internal face of the coamings. This afforded fishermen the opportunity to quickly clean the messy stuff off their hands. In both instances seemingly an overkill but really, all just part of an ‘accomplished’ rich tapestry of a well-thought-out vessel. Other appropriately-user-friendly features within the confines of this huge and uncluttered cockpit feature, included the well-positioned steps up to the walkway level, the polished aluminium gunwale rub-strip, the sturdy overhead rod rack, the tuna tubes each side of the bait station, and copious quantities of storage along the internal side coamings and in the central cavernous underfloor locker. For the fisherman, the out-of-the-way custom (proper) bait station, and the innovatively-placed live-bait tank complete with viewing window, within the transom step-through, all added effective convenience to the equation. Outside and aft of the confines of the cockpit, was a boarding platform, Portofino-style, that had something for everyone. A pseudo-pushpit hand-rail assembly kept the area safe when at sea. The revelation here though, for me anyway, were the dive ladders each side that formed an integral part of the pushpit. Locked in place by a simple yet effective locking assembly, these two dive ladders cleverly semi-cantilevered out and well down into the water. Entirely, user-friendly.

BEHEMOTH SUZUKI POWER An integral part also, of this Portofino platform, was the central pod-assembly which supported the power of choice, in this instance a massive 350hp Suzuki which put power to the water through the (twin-propeller) contra-rotating 15½ x 19P stainless steel propellers. In light of the fact the 915 models have traditionally been powered by twin rigs, I must admit I had some reservations

about the single engine providing enough thrust. Especially when I learned the original intention was to run one of the new 600hp Mercury outboards. Wrong, for acceleration out of the hole and top speed, were both more than acceptable. The torque and power of the Suzuki was especially noticeable, literally rocketing this Extreme 915 Walk Around up to a top speed of 40.7 knots (46.85mph / 75.38kph) at the maximum 6300rpm. As if to further emphasise the convenience of the aforementioned Raymarine screen read-outs on the dash, all our speed trials and fuel-usage tests were done using information gleaned from these NMEA-controlled readouts. Interestingly, I also learned that with all the running we did during our test day - stop, start, full speed, up through the range, and the photo shoot - revealed the Suzuki ran for a total of 2.4 hours, using just 38 litres of fuel. DNA’s 450 series is fast becoming a favourite throughout the country. Barry Thompson checks out the centre console version to see why these entry level pontoon boats are so popular.

However, with a boat that runs out to just 4.60m overall, I prefer the spaciousness of a console. Yes, the console does take up some space, but the footprint isn’t huge and there is still ample working space on the deck. This is a genuine fishing boat, and while you can tow the kids on water toys, it’s unashamedly targeted towards fisherman. DNA’s growing range covers just about every trailer boating style, from open dinghies to cuddys, hardtops, full cabins and centre consoles. Computer design enables the boats to be studied and tested in depth while still in the 3D model stage, also allowing the owners to have some input without the costly exercise of first building a boat and then having to change it as it’s not how you pictured.

A few years ago, I reviewed a DNA 450C, one of the builders most popular boats and a great entry level pontoon cuddy. Released in 2014 the DNA 450 series is now available in three versions and all utilise the same hull structure, with DNA’s signature tapered pontoons. The 450 HSD is the tiller steer model with twin bench seats and a full flat floor that keeps the internal spaces clutter free. The 450 CC is the centre console version and the 450 C their cuddy design. The 450 series is the perfect step up from a big open dinghy to a small trailer boat, be it open or a cuddy. Depending on what you intend to use the boat for will determine what style you choose. I loved the little cuddy, it has to be one of the better ones on the market.

ALLOY BOAT 2022 ISSUE #25

BOAT TEST_DNA 450

The layout of the DNA 450 CC is all about best fishing options along with storage and comfort. With a trailerable weight around 500 kgs, it is an easy boat to beach launch.

ECONOMICAL BOATING The 450 CC is rated for a single outboard 4060hp. We ran a 60hp Yamaha, which gave a top speed of 22 knots (25.3 mph) @ 5900 rpm. The boat was lightly set up with a single tote tank, two people and hardly any extra gear. Personally, I think the 60hp is the right power option, especially if you see yourself loading the boat with plenty of diving and fishing gear and maybe a couple of mates. The 40hp would be fine, but it’s worth investing in the extra 20hp for peace of mind. Although I only got to run the boat in relatively calm water I have seen some videos of the same boat in rough water off Durville Island. The video tells the story and it is very impressive the way this small boat handles itself in extreme sea conditions.

UNIQUE DESIGN The 4.60m, DNA 450 Series is based on a 16 deg hull, with a 1.84m beam, 4mm hull and

ALLOY BOAT 2022 ISSUE #25

2.5mm tube thickness. Beneath the floor is an integral hull framing system using CNC cut interlocking full depth full length frames creating a rigid system adopted throughout DNA’s alloy boat range. The underwater sections are based on tapering down-turned chines to the hull, which means the pontoons could be stepped out further to increase the internal beam. This also meant the pontoons were slightly lifted so not to cause any drag in the water once planning. DNA pontoon designs are somewhat unique in that they taper towards the bow, however the tapered pontoons are still designed to retain sufficient reserve buoyancy. The pontoons are divided into individual air tight chambers as well as sealed tread plate floors, all of which are pressure tested to 5psi, creating a virtually unsinkable boat. “The tapering chines are better able to deal with spray deflection as they are a nice flowing curve with a more aggressive downturn than most conventional pontoon shapes”, says designer, Jason Elvines. He adds it makes for a much drier ride as the spray is thrown further from the boat and in a downward direction where the wind is less likely to pick it up and throw it at you. I have to agree with that. In a short choppy sea we took no spray aboard. The boat is very stable at rest and in hard turns it bites hard with virtually no slip. Acceleration from holeshot to 5500 rpm is also impressive. I said previously in the review of the 450 C that the pontoon design had an added benefit in the ride, as the chines acts as a shock absorber, trapping a cushion of air under them as they land, and reducing the impact to the buoyant nature of the pontoon chambers. The 450 CC is no different.

POWERBOATMAGAZINE.CO.NZ

DESIGNED FOR FISHING Where the 450C provided a nice cuddy with plenty of undercover storage, the 450 CC is all open. The open bow area on our boat was fitted with the optional raised casting platform, which gives you extra storage spaces. There is a deep anchor locker in the forepeak that is big enough to handle a small drum winch. I liked the extra wide fairlead, which allows you to run a heavier anchor and chain. Twin hatches give easy access to the cavernous space which is ideal for lifejackets and dry storage. It is also where the battery for the Minn Kota Riptide is stowed. All floor and coamings areas are covered in U-Dek. The owner of the boat we reviewed had DNA build him a removeable leaning station, as he is into his soft baiting and was looking for a little more stability when standing. Works well. Side coamings are wide and come with plenty of rod holders and drink/storage cups. While our boat had side railings along the aft coamings, I would expect that if you were into diving you would leave these off the option list. With a coaming height of 650mm, the cockpit is at a safe height for young children but also perfect for bracing against when fishing. The fishing area is ideal for two or three with 1.37m internal beam with a flat floor chine to chine. Storage trays under the coamings are wide and long so you can stow long 2m plus rods easily. However, with the coaming rod holders, two on the bait board and four more ahead of the console you have plenty of places for the rods already. There is no underfloor storage as it is all used for buoyancy. The centre console comes complete with a screen, which provides protection for the Garmin 9” MFD. The facia offers plenty of space for switches and instruments. We had a Yamaha engine management display, a switch panel and USB port. SEAT OPTIONS

PERFORMANCE DATA

A 72 litre Icy-Tek bin provides both seating for two and storage, plus comes with a fish measure set into the faux teak. There are a variety of seating options available, however, given the limited space available, the bin seat would seem the best option. Under the rear deck is a raised storage shelf, with provision for twin 25 litre tote tanks below. A deep sump is fitted with a bilge pump to expel any excess water that comes aboard. Twin boarding platforms are designed with very stylish flat handrails and you have the option of a drop-down ladder on the port side. Options include a custom-made bait board and live bait tank. You have the choice of a raw alloy finish, painted or as on our boat the owner went for wrapping. The 450 CC is a very competitively priced centre console boat with a base retail of $33,500 - $35,000. And then you add your extras on from there. Our drive away price as reviewed was $45,000. Overall a well build, and appointed entry level pontoon boat that takes a lot of beating. While DNA may not be as well-known as some of their competitors, they are certainly making their name in the very competitive alloy boat market. You can’t fault the finish and build quality and the handling is exceptional. It’s a small boat making a big statement.
