THE IMPORTANCE OF GOOD SEATS I
...when quality counts
N researching the trailer boat seating article for this issue I was reminded of when I first started in this industry back in the early 1970s and how boat seats have changed so much, but then in some cases not. Okay that may sound confusing, but I can remember boats in the 1970s had very similar plastic moulded or fibreglass seats with an optional layer of foam and vinyl. Really not a lot different from today, apart from the fact that most seat bases today are now rotationally moulded polyethene. They are also better shaped and certainly have the durability and toughness to outlast most of our boating lifetime. Plus if you have to trash them, they can be melted down and be reborn into some other shape. Not something that grp allows. Having being offshore powerboat racing for around 30 years and sitting in thinly upholstered seats, I stuffed my back through constant pounding of the spine and even ended up having to have a spinal fusion. Until I started racing with a harness to hold me in tight, I endured hundreds of hours being bounced off the seat and landing with such a force my teeth rattled. I was young and tough and yes a little bit stupid. I still suffer today when I go boating in rough water, so I know the benefits of having proper seating. The old foam was a little dodgy and over time used to break down and fall to bits. It also lost its firmness and the types of vinyl were not to the same standard as our UV stabilised materials of today. If you wanted a suspension seat, or in the new vernacular, shock mitigation seat, you grabbed one from a truck. Trouble is they were steel and after exposure to saltwater never lasted. Today we have specialist marine shock mitigation seats that are designed for the marine environment. The old seats were mounted on moulded bases or fixed pedestals and while they did take some of the ‘shock’ out of the ride, they were only mildly effective. Then along came the Softrider hydraulic suspension pedestal and things changed. Today they are just about standard in 5m+ trailer boats fitted with pedestal seats. Seats today are more ergonomic, robust and versatile with better foams and vinyls. We now have bolsters, adjustable armrests and high back designs that make our on water experience so much better. But let’s not forget the basic moulded, un-sprung, un-upholstered seat shell, such as the Hi-Tech 150, of which over 26,000 have been made. These are still the most popular small to medium seat for smaller tinnies.

DNA RELEASE NEW 7.3 HARDTOP
Designed as an offshore fishing platform with weekending capabilities, the new DNA 7.3 hardtop retains all the best attributes of similar models in the range. This includes the X-Series hull which is designed to maximise the internal hull space, but without having to add so much beam that the wetted surface is increased to a point where you need more horsepower to power the boat. Using CAD design and CNC profile cutting, the X-Series hulls are built to fine tolerances and allow a perfectly symmetrical and wellbalanced boat. Jason says the computer design enables the boats to be studied and tested in depth while still in the 3D model stage.
The 7.3 hardtop has a 300-litre fuel and 35-litre water capacity, with the first boat powered by a Honda BF250. If you are going to sell a boat as a weekender, then you need a small galley and the 7.3 Hardtop comes with a nice compact two burner cooker and sink unit. Other features include underfloor cockpit storage, live bait tank, rear platform railings to extend useable deck space and a lock-up cabin featuring bifold door and cavity sliding window. Dunedin based Nyalic NZ recently coated their clear coat protection both inside and out of the latest 16m high-speed Police catamaran, Stewart Kerlin. Built by Norman R. Wright & Sons in Brisbane, she is powered by triple Hamilton Jets through MTU engines. The ‘new’ Stewart Kerlin replaces a previous 11.99m vessel built some years ago at Yamba. Their latest project, the 16 M Stewart Kerlin was given the full Nyalic treatment, which involved the Nyalic coating applied via paint rollers on the topsides and in tight areas and framing, a small HVLP unit was used. This involved 24 quarts of Nyalic. A simple and practical layout with plenty of storage.

CORPION’S 470 CENTRE CONSOLE MODEL HAS BEEN AROUND FOR SOME YEARS NOW, and in that time has hit favour with those who want the practicality of a centre console without the price tag that seemingly has been associated with boats of this configuration in recent times. “The Scorpion 470 is being bought by a wide range of people, those who are new to boating, whether it be a young guy who wants to get out fishing with a few mates or a young family, or by those who are more experienced boaters and find that to enjoy their boating they are in need of a smaller, more easily handled vessel,” says Sportcraft Boats Jamie Black. The layout of the 470 is quite functional, well appointed and ideal for those who want a no fuss, open and workable fishing platform. The wide side gunnels are very practical, both to use as seats and as a flat surface to work on. The centre console is very easy to get around, making it great to fight fish from all around the boat . Across the transom, you have a sizeable boarding platform on either side of the outboard. There are handrails on both sides and a sturdy boarding ladder on the port side. Aft seating is on either side of the transom, with squab cushions available. Storage space is standard via full-length side pockets that can house a number of fishing rods, while underneath the transom there is storage space, big enough to accommodate a couple of tote tanks. A bait board sits in the middle of the transom, and there are six-rod holders in the coamings. Up in the bow, there is a high bow rail and access to the anchor locker which will see you do your anchoring duties by hand. ALLOY BOAT 2018 ISSUE #15

INSHORE FISHER We spent much of our test day exploring the upper reaches of Tauranga harbour, fishing various channels. We followed the birds, drifted over the drop off in the channels, dropped the anchor in a few spots and cast a few baits. As we experienced on the day, the 470 Centre Console is ideally suited to calm inshore waters such as Tauranga’s inner harbour, although you could quite safely take it out of the harbour if you wanted to. The windshield is nicely designed and provides adequate protection from the wind. We stood to drive most of the time, however, the sizeable chilly bin located directly behind the helm doubles as a seat with a squab on top. The dash is very well equipped with a switch panel, VHF, Garmin engine instruments and an MFD mounted on a bracket above. The steering is hydraulic making it very light to use. Plus I liked the binnacle helm which allows you to have dash mounted key. Additional storage is located below with shelf that keeps gear up off the floor. Though not fitted to this particular model, a Targa Top is also available as an option. ECONOMICAL CRUISING Our 470 Centre Console was powered by a 60hp Honda Four-Stroke outboard. Wide open throttle will see a top speed of 28 knots @ 5800rpm using 20L/H. You’ll achieve a comfortable cruise speed of 20 knots @ 4500rpm using just 9.0L/H The 470 is an easy and fun boat to drive, not requiring too much trim to get it running nicely. I was surprised how effortlessly the 60hp Honda got us up out of the water and onto the plane.

The 470 is a compact yet well appointed centre console from Scorpion Boats. The bow area is spacious and great to cast a few baits from. Easy access to anchor locker also. Storage for tote tanks under the transom. The helm area is well appointed.
Stability at rest for a little boat was quite reasonable, with two of us managing to move around the boat surely and safely, and as far as fishability goes, there would be enough room for two adults to fish comfortably with a couple of kids. Handling was excellent for a smaller boat. We encountered a reasonable chop on Tauranga’s inner harbour as we headed back to the ramp. The ride was excellent, and more importantly, it was dry! Launching and retrieving, as you would expect for a boat this size, was a breeze, and quickly done by one person. On the trailer, the 470 only weighs in at 750kg and given its size, and beach launching is easily achievable as well. Back at home, you’ll find that the windscreen can unlatch and fold forward making for easy storage. Overall a very affordable and well-priced package considering all the extras that are included. The boat, motor, trailer, fish finder, VHF, bait board and the anchor pack all comes in at $32,500, with packages starting from $28,950. Great value for money? You bet.

A look at tiller-steer dinghies
N THE VERY FIRST EDITION OF ALLOY BOAT MAGAZINE we ran a feature on tiller steer boats, a market that has remained very popular over the past four years, but with many changes in brands and models. We take another look at who the players are now and just what you can expect to pay for an entry-level package.
horsepower so did the boats in size to accommodate them. However, there was still a place for the entry-level tinnie, a style that has always maintained a reasonable share of the alloy boat market. While there are no actual figures available, it is estimated that there were more than 10,000 Fyran/Parkercraft 10 and 12 footers built over the years and that may be conservative. The first of the runabout styles followed them with the Parkercraft 14 and the Fyran 14 that both had a small windscreen, with a forward helm and rope and pulley steering, These were a significant upgrade on the tiller steer models and started the alloy boat runabout trend. While they were slow to gain acceptance when it did, it grew at a rapid pace and today alloy boats dominate the trailer boat market.
In the beginning, there was no choice. Aluminium boats were tiller-steer only. The earliest brands, Fyran and Parkcraft, didn’t have cabin boats or runabouts, just 10ft to 14ft open tiller steer or in some cases such as Starcraft a side console. These were boats that suited your Seagull outboard. It was the humble small ‘tinnie’ that the whole aluminium boat market has grown from. During those development years the style and size of alloy boats changed and as engines grew in

easily powered with low horsepower outboards. While we still see very flattish low deadrise open boats in this class, some manufacturers have done a lot to improve the ride and spent time developing hull shapes that provide a little more comfort and handling. Stability has always been an issue in a small tinnie, but not so much of a concern in larger tiller steer boats, where they have the extra beam and coaming height. The development of pontoon alloy boats has also done a lot to alleviate the stability issue in smaller tinnies, Not that we are talking trying to make these performance boats. They are the domain of calm water, close to shore and with outboards at the lower end of the horsepower range. If you went out today to look for a suitable 3.3m-5m open tillersteer dinghy, you might be amazed at the options available. Around 26 brands are offering over 135 models. Of those, Telwater, through their three brands, Quintrex, Savage and Stacer list a staggering 84 models available from 3.58m to 6.13m, with the rest all Kiwi builders. In many cases, the same open dinghy tiller-steer hull is also available as a centre console or side console and in some cases as a runabout. Hull thicknesses vary from 1.2mm to 5mm, with 3mm on average and size range from 2.5m to 6.3m. We take a look at some of the brands and what they are offering for the coming season:
Back To Basics
But fear not, the age of the dinghy is back and today, with a little help from some very enterprising manufacturers, the open tillersteer dinghy is again an essential sector of the aluminium boat industry. While some manufacturers have gone completely away from dinghies, there are some that have embraced them to the extent that they are a mainstay of their production. The reason for their continual success probably has a lot to do with affordability as much as practicality. For example, you can put a 4.3m-4.5m tiller steer tinnie with a 30/40 hp two stroke outboard and trailer on the water for less than $20,000. If you go right back to basics and are looking for something to replace the 30 seasons old 12ft Parkercraft, then you don’t need to spend any more than $10,000, and that includes 15hp outboard and T bar trailer. The first of the tinnies were riveted, 2mm to 2.5mm thick pressed hulls with no separate floor and with no inbuilt floatation. If they filled with water, they sunk. Today the level of engineering in the boats has become very sophisticated and it’s rare to see a riveted boat anymore. Hulls and decks are welded and in most cases they include foam either under the seat, gunnels or if big enough under the floor. They are built tough, but lightweight and easy to handle on a beach or bring back on a trailer. The underwater sections are relatively flat, so they are

Bluefin
There are two tiller-steer pontoon models from Bluefin, the 420 APB and the 480 APB. Both are constructed with 3mm hull bottoms and are suitable for outboards 15hp - 25hp. The 480 APB is also available in a centre console version.
DNA This very active Nelson based alloy boat builder has three tiller steer boats; the 300D, 420D and 420HSD. These pontoon boats are packed full of standard features, such as heavy-duty fendering, sealed pontoon chambers and a sealed self-draining floor.
FREWZA Frews Marine, in Invercargill, produces two smaller dinghies. The Frewza 4.1 is a high-sided dinghy with great deck and storage space and the smaller 3.4m pontoon dinghy is as rugged as its 4.1m counterpart, but about half the weight at 100kg. The F14, F16 and F18 are also available as tiller steer runabouts.

This 4.50m tiller steer alloy dinghy from designer Jarrod Hall is 4.70m overall with a beam of 1.95m and built using 4mm plate. Power options are 40-60hp for this soft riding hull that offers loads of storage, seating, a raised casting deck and sealed air buoyancy chambers.
Savage
One of the big three Australian alloy boat brands owned by Telwater, Savage offers 23 tiller steer models from 3.m to 5.25m. The vast range is diversified into different styles and layouts to suit a variety of owner’s requirements.

here is no point in just blaming past governments the commercial fishing industry or the limited research funding over the past thirty years that has not seen the level and depth of research we would have liked and needed. Surely now is the time that we all need more than ever to all work together for the future generations or am I just a dreamer? Let’s just stop and take a breath and pretend we are in a “perfect world”. Put all the past differences aside and start with a clean slate, we all know fisheries research are working under a limited budget the cost of fuel and compliance is costing the commercial fleet more each year as it is for the recreational fisher, so there is no point in blaming each other about past or present injustices. In my “perfect world” knowledge is the key going forward and each of us has a part to play, can you imagine what information could be gained from all the log books/catch records and local knowledge of the skippers of old. Sure there would be some red faces as there was a hell of a lot of rouges high grading and illegally landing fish[and that’s on both sides] but to get back to a starting point this is what we need to know to have some idea of how big was the biomass in the first place. On top of that, there

is bound to be other things such as climatic conditions that may have had an impact on the spawning and migratory movements in certain years. There are many hardcore recreational fishers and charter boat operators that fish well within the areas targeted by the commercial fleet that would also have some valuable input as to the changes that they have seen take place over the years.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION If we had all that historical information for all to see it would no dought scare the shit out of ourselves but at least for once we would genuinely know why and how we all got to the place we are now in, and would we all want to do something to change it is the question and at what cost ? Personally, I see this as the perfect time for everyone to honestly and openly work together for the first time for the sake of our countries future - but as I said if only we were living in a “perfect world” where greed and profit were not the driving force of humanity. Without any law or limit changes we all can do more to limit the damage we do, wouldn’t it be a great move from the commercial trawl sector if they took up the net design changes that have

We the recreational fishers need to really take on board that we also need to tidy up our act as well, overall my years of writing and lecturing I have seen a massive change in attitude to releasing big prime breeding stock and only taking a feed rather than a limit but even that is not enough in my opinion. I still hear a lot of people say I only get out a few times a year, so I want to take all the fish I legally can yet how many fish do you need, seven fish equal fourteen fillets - that’s a hell of a lot of fish.

Not only are hooks of 7 0/0 or larger easier to rig a bait, but also, when a fish is lifted on board, big hooks enable you to hold the shank giving you greater control over the fish than trying to get hold of it when it’s thrashing around on the trace. With the fish being held by the hook it is under control, now with a damp rag in your hand lay the fish upside down, so your thumb and forefinger are gripping it at the top of the gill plate. Holding a fish upside down in this way calms them down and the pressure on the hard bony section of the head above the gill plate prevents them from thrashing around, now you merely reverse the hook from the jaw. At no time will you have to have your fingers anywhere near the gut cavity or in the gills, remember fish swim in neutral buoyancy so never have pressure applied to these areas. Think about this, even a 45cm snappers rib cage bones are very soft so if you hold an undersize fish by the gut and squeezed it as you struggle to remove a 4 or 5 0/0 hook the damage to its internal organs is huge. Holding a fish in the gut /stomach area means you have to squeeze it tightly to get a grip so for a fish that swims in neutral buoyancy it would be like me standing on your stomach. The pressures are enormous and it may take a day or so for the injuries to be fatal when we are long gone and don’t see the results.
THE RIGHT HOOK SIZE What we use in the way of hook size along with the way we handle and release undersize fish is what will go a long way to making a long-term difference! Let’s face it none of us wants to get frustrated by wasting fishing time plus valuable bait catching undersize fish especially when we know that some [ or most] of these released fish may die. If everyone used a 7 0/0 hook or larger to start with there would be a considerable drop in undersized fish being caught and the fish that are caught will have a greater chance of survival when

STATE OF SHOCK When have you ever seen a shag catch a snapper on its own yet they manage to catch the small ones you release, so why? Simply despite you thinking the fish you released was in good condition as it swam off fast, it was in a state of shock, and more than likely had internal organ damage. There will always be some mortality rate no matter how careful we are but just think if every one of us caught and released only one fish that survived each year we would all have an impact on the inshore fish stocks. On average there will be many hundreds of people out fishing during the week and many more every weekend, but just say that its only 100 anglers all releasing just one fish that survives every week over a year that’s 5200 fish that get a chance to breed. The worst case scenario is an undersized can get gut hooked fish even when fishing with 7/0 hooks, trying to remove the hook will kill it no matter what. Give that fish a fighting chance for the cost of a hook [a few cents] by holding the fish by the trace close to the water and cut the line as close to the mouth as possible. Two simple things we should all be doing can make a difference is using a bigger hook size and handling fish correctly, please stop and take this on board as it will take a while to get used to handling fish this way but there are some real benefits. Bigger hooks are easier to rig baits, get away greater hookup rate than smaller hooks, and catch less undersize fish, but best of all are easier to remove from the fish. Holding all fish upside down in a damp rag with the thumb and forefinger on the hard-bony area at the top of the gill plate [not in the gut area] you get fewer spiked fingers and its quicker and less dramas removing the hook and best of all the fish has a higher chance of survival when released. Maybe I am just a dreamer but why couldn’t we simply change the recreational bag limit down from 7 to 5, from October to the end of February and proportionately the commercial sector cut back their catch take by the same percentage. Imagine then the amount of fish that would then get to spawn, it would be immense and I am sure within a few years the biomass of the snapper in the Hauraki Gulf would dramatically increase. Maybe I am a dreamer and want to live in a perfect world, but I am sure there are a lot more people like me out there that want to leave the sea in a better place for the future generations. IT’S ALL IN Electronics One-O-One Editor Barry Thompson has never taken full advantage of the many functions his Humminbird MFD and Minn Kota, electric trolling outboard offers, but after some on the water training reckons he has it mastered. I have to admit that when it comes to electronics, especially marine electronics, I am technically challenged. I even have problems getting all the functions and apps on my Samsung phone to work and don’t even go there when you’re talking about our home stereo. So when I got my new Humminbird Helix 9 Mega SI MFD and Minn Kota RT55 ST Link Advanced trolling motor I thought, yep easy pezzy, just plug and play. Yeah right! While I have no issues in turning the Helix 9 on and reading the basic sonar functions, when it comes to setting up and understanding things like down and side Mega imaging I was out of my depth...literally. Hidden inside the menu button of the Helix 9 are hundreds of functions and when it looked like such a complex assortment of displays were possible on the screen, I went back to the basics. I was still catching fish and after all, that’s the main reason for both pieces of equipment. Mind you everything is well tabbed and easy to navigate even for me. If I had spent the time going through it.

OWEVER, while looking at the bottom shape and fish recognition I was okay, I really needed to explore the Helix 9 more and understand what I was missing out on. Catching fish, or rather detecting fish is much more of a science now than when I used to go fish as a kid with my father. He tossed a heavyweight handline, with 80lb test nylon over the side and we just kept pulling in big snapper. If the snapper pulled his line into the weed and rocks, he merely dragged up the bottom as well. Light tackle gear….what was that! Today you have to be a little smarter and that’s where a good fish finder or multi-function display (MFD) comes into play. So what to do? I could spend hours reading the online manual and play around with all the buttons, but I have never ever been very good at that. So when BLA, who supplied me both the Humminbird and the Minn Kota said they had a guy who went around the country training dealers on how to use their products and that I should talk to him, I was in. Lucas Allen, BLA’s in-field training & support guy is well versed in all the Humminbird and Minn Kota products. A day was decided on and in early July, Lucas took me for a serious training session in my McLay 4.5 Fortress. “So first thing is”, said Lucas, “what chart have you got”? I had fallen at the first post as the Helix 9 didn’t even have a chart installed. I have never really found the need for one as the area I fish off the Whangaparaoa Peninsula I know so well I didn’t see the need for it. I got the depth and the bottom structure on the sonar, so that seemed enough. Lucas mentioned that if I had a chart, I could utilise a few more functions and take better advantage of the Helix 9. So to make sure we started with all the right gear I jumped the fence to the neighbour’s place and ‘borrowed’ a Navionics Gold card from his Humminbird 7”. All good, it soon booted up and we headed for the water. Thanks, David. “What functions do you have on your favourite’s?”, said Lucas. “Well I have a sonar chart and a track chart with some waypoints and also combo structure scan and Side Imaging but I never use the last two as I don’t really understand the display and to be fair have never even attempted to learn”. “Okay,” he said, “ that’s just a matter of adjustment and setup so we will dial that in when we are on the water with some structure underneath the boat and you can see how good it looks and what it shows you”.
With i-Pilot Link, I learnt how to control the Minn Kota from a virtual remote or the Humminbird screen.
Lucas then asked me had I set up my Minn Kota so that it talked to the Helix 9 through the iPilot and that is where I really needed help. Firstly we had no power to the heading sensor as the earth wire wasn’t even connected to anything. After fixing that and getting the right flashing signals from the antenna on the deck, we had established contact between everything. But that’s fine, it’s just that I didn’t have a clue how to make everything work. First thing was we had to the set up the heading sensor and using the Minn Kota I drove two complete circles in the boat. This was to make sure the GPS was calibrated with the boat so that from now on I would know that when I set a course and steered by the Minn Kota it would be even more accurate. This also enabled me to go from the basic AutoPilot function, which I was able to use without the heading sensor, to the far more accurate Advanced AutoPilot function, with a chart this time, which enabled me to lock in a straight line course and the Minn Kota would compensate for variables like wind and drift. IMPROVING MY IMAGE While I have never used, Side Imaging or Down Imaging, after a few lessons from Lucas I could see what great tools they were and what I had been missing. The first job was for him to adjust the screen displays so they were readable and I could see the bottom contours both well out to the side and under the boat. Previously it was all one big dark orangy blur.

Lucas Allen, BLA’s in-field training & support guy is well versed in all the Humminbird and Minn Kota products and I learnt a lot.
The Side Imaging gives you a 180 degree side-to-side perspective with an ultra-thin beam that scans the area up to 122m to the left and right of your boat location-for total coverage of up to 244m. The return image for each slice is then added to the images taken immediately before and after to build an incredible view of the bottom. You can then magnify the detail of the image with the zoom feature or mark the GPS location of promising cover or structure directly on the screen. The Side Imaging reveals structure, cover, and contour changes with crystal clarity. The images are very real and it doesn’t matter how murky the water is. We found a couple of old railway wheels that had been used for mooring blocks in about 5m of water and the definition was amazing. Being the only bit of structure in the surrounding sand, it was guaranteed to be a fish attractor, so I immediately marked it as a waypoint to investigate in the future. This clarity is due to Humminbird’s MEGA Imaging, running 1.2 mega hertz (1200 kilohertz) frequency. The Down Imaging returns a portrait-like snapshot of what lies beneath your boat. These incredible images are created with high-frequency sound waves which produce a “portrait.” As you cruise along, you’ll watch clear definitions of any structures on the bottom in stunning detail. Much like the Side Imaging, but this is directly below the boat. If you see something you like you can mark it and there’s also a great function in i-Pilot that will take you back to the spot even though you have passed it. As they say, it’s all in the detail.

Electronics One-O-One Using the remote I could get the Minn Kota to do my bidding and explore some very shallow areas I had never been before.
I now have my favourites buttons set up the way I want them.
i-PILOT LINK One of the functions I was very keen to learn more about was the i-Pilot Link, with the Integrated GPS trolling system. This enables your Humminbird fish finder and Minn Kota trolling motor to communicate and deliver precise, automatic boat control with a full-colour LCD touchscreen. Lucas showed me how to use either the Humminbird Helix 9 unit or the wireless Link remote, to not only drive the boat but also can store and revisit areas and spots I had been over. With i-Pilot Link, I was able to take command and lock onto spots, learn and retrace paths and depth contours, and more. It’s a function that I am certainly going to use a lot more. Since I have had a Minn Kota, it has become my virtual anchor and in the past few seasons, I have very rarely put the hard anchor down. With Spot-lock, the GPS anchor holds you on your fishing spot and you don’t move. I am amazed at how it stays even when the wind and waves are up. Absolutely brilliant. Another option that I didn’t know about until Lucas pointed it out is Spot-Lock Jog, which lets you move your SpotLock 1.5m in any direction. With every press of the directional keys, saving you the time of navigating then re spot locking at your altered spot. Another cool feature is iTrack, which allows you to create, store, retrace and return to your most productive trolling paths. I must admit I had given this a try before as I wanted to map around Wellington Reef and
so was a little familiar with it. After Lucas’s tutorial, I am now much more confident and have a few more reefs that I want to trace. It works by simply turning on iTrack and through i-Pilot Link will automatically retrace it up to 2nm. You can dial-in your BackTrack travel distance in 0.1nm mile increments. You can also retrace your track with the backtrack function. Great for doubling back on a productive drift or recent flurry of activity. With i-Pilot Link, you can control your motor from a virtual remote or your Humminbird screen, plus take command of speed, steering, SpotLock and Advanced AutoPilot, directly from your fish finder. It allows you to get quick command of speed, steering, Spot-Lock and AutoPilot, plus easy software updates straight from your mobile device and is compatible with iPhone and iPad running iOS 8.0 or later, and Android 4.4.2 and up. I have to thank Lucas for his time and I now understand a lot more about how everything works and why. I have my three favourite buttons set up the way I want them, understand how to use the Minn Kota i-Pilot Link and when I bring up Down and Side Imaging I know what I am looking at. So will all this mean I will catch my bag limit every time....you bet! COOL CUDDY Barry Thompson braved the wild Nelson weather to check out one of the coolest little cuddy cabin boats in the country, the DNA 480XC and loved it.
B
ACK IN THE 1970S, there were only a couple of alloy boat builders in New Zealand. Today there are over 75 and growing. Every time I go to a boat show I seem to find a few more and while most are low volume producers with limited models, they all take a share of the alloy boat market. It is also interesting to note that the majority of the more established builders are away from the major population centres and more especially in the South Island. One of those is DNA Boats, based in the small town of Brightwater, 20 km southwest of Nelson. When Jason Elvines built his first alloy boat back in 2005, a friend saw it and wanted it. He made a second one and the process repeated itself, and so began the formation of a boat building company. After setting up his own engineering firm, in 2008 due to continued demand for his boats, he launched DNA

Boats and as they say….the rest is history. While DNA is certainly not one of the biggest alloy boat manufacturers in the country (about 50 boats annually), what Jason designs and builds is first class. Jason is an outdoorsman, so when it comes to designing boats, he knows what serious fisherman want and has even delved into boats to suit hunters. “Our boats are a combination of years of designing and building experience and from the teams own personal experience using boats. We are constantly striving for the best build and owners experience we can”, says Jason. The range today comprises eight different segments, in either pontoon or plate. These run from small pontoon dinghies through to large trailerable hardtops…and everything in between. While the website lists 22 models, from 4.2m to 8.21m, Jason says with the custom builds he does that’s only part of the total range.

BOAT TEST DNA 480XC

“While we have a stock range, we also have a lot of requests for custom boats and while sometimes we will use maybe a stock hull design, the rest can start with a clean sheet of paper and be a total custom built for an owner”, he says. Often that design is then added to the stock range and over the years it’s the custom request that has been very much responsible for the recent expansion of the DNA range. I have made a few trips to Nelson to review DNA boats and usually, it is as the tourism literature says “Sunny Nelson”. Someone forgot to tell the weather gods the day I arrived with a cold Southerly pumping across Golden Bay, with pouring rain and rough seas. “Perfect day for a test, “ said Jason. “Yeah right”. But I had to take what I got and as I was only stopping off on the way through to Christchurch. I don’t mind the rough water, but I hate doing reviews in the pouring rain, especially in an open boat. And, that’s just what Jason had lined up for me, a 480XC, one of three models in the pontoon cuddies series. The 480XC slots in between the 450C and the 535 XC and is the smallest boat in the range to feature the X-Series hull design. They are designed to provide the perfect balance of stability, soft dry ride and space. Using CAD design and CNC profile cutting, the

X-Series hulls are built to fine tolerances and allow a perfectly symmetrical and well balanced boat. Jason says the computer design enables the boats to be studied and tested in depth while still in the 3D model stage. “This is perfect for when we are designing a fully customised boat as it takes all the guesswork out of the process and so when the boat is built it looks exactly as it should and there are no surprises”, added Jason. One of the most significant aspects of the X-Series design is maximising the internal hull space, but without having to add so much beam that the wetted surface is increased to a point where you need more horsepower to power the boat. DNA’s answer was tapering downturned chines which allowed them to step the pontoon out further to increase internal beam. The pontoons have been slightly raised so while at rest they are in the water and offering greater stability, underway they are clear of the water, so the drag factor is minimised. With the tapering chines acting also as a spray deflector, the X-Series hulls really toss the spray low and away from the boat. The chines also act as a shock absorber trapping a cushion of air under them as they land, and reducing the impact to the buoyant nature of the pontoon chambers.

Basic Layout There is one basic layout available, although DNA does offer some customisation on the seating. Back to backs, cantilevered, pedestals, you can have just about the style you want. Forward under the cuddy, it’s all about space to stow gear with an alloy upstand to stop stuff flowing back into the cockpit. Squabs are available should you want them. The windscreen opens to provide access to the open anchor locker, which is deep enough for a small drum winch. There’s no doubt the 480XC will be predominately used for fishing and the cockpit layout reflects that. At 1.44m, the internal beam is 200mm wider than the 450C and as part of the X-Series design has flat floors and a toe space where you can actually hook your feet in underneath the pontoon giving you more positive grip stance and allowing you to stand closer to the edge. There is storage in deep side trays as well as under the aft deck, a central bait station with foldup bait board, and a locker for the battery. Fuel is carried in tote tanks and there is an easy port side walk-through to the boarding platform with drop down ladder. Uncluttered and functional. The 480XC was released early 2017 and is a development of a previous 5m hull that has been discontinued and while overall a smaller boat, it provides more internal space, thanks to the X-Series design. Jason points out that while it’s a boat designed for fishermen, it is also well suited to family boating,

towing water toys and generally having fun with the kids. At 750 kgs towing weight, it’s light to tow and well suited to beach launching. The optional sports arch can carry a bimini and clears for extra protection and also a rocket launcher for the rods. It’s built tough and can be modified to fold down. Underfloor is all buoyancy, but there is the option of fitting a 65-litre underfloor fuel tank.
80hp Perfect Match The 480XC has a horsepower rating of 50-90hp, so the Honda 80 is a right size mid-range engine. If you are loading the boat with three guys and a load of fishing or dive gear, the 50-60hp outboards are too small and will be working hard all the time. The 90hp is undoubtedly not overpowering the boat, but for me, the 80hp was the perfect match. With two aboard, the 480XC was quick to plane and we recorded 33.5 knots in the calm water of Nelson Harbour. At 4500 rpm, around 24 knots, the 80hp was using just 15.0 lph and with a couple of tote tanks the range was getting up around 70nm.

Summary In the short chop in Golden Bay outside Nelson Harbour, the 480XC performed better than I would have expected for such a small boat. Driving the boat for the conditions it handled the seas well, but you still need to remember it’s not a big boat. I could see just how much the X-Series hull design comes into its own in rougher water and the boat maintained great stability and dryness of ride. Generally, a very soft ride although there were some deep ‘holes’ that jarred the boat, but probably less than I have experienced in even bigger pontoon boats.

The 480XC is another perfect example of why Kiwi alloy boat builders punch above their weight on the world stage. An entrylevel boat that defines the meaning of an all-rounder and comes with a build quality second to none. Jason says a lot of his clients come from the local Nelson area and boats are sold on owner’s recommendations. However, they are sold New Zealand wide and as the brand gains more national exposure so do the sales figures. If I were looking for an alloy cuddy cabin boat under 5m, the DNA 480XC would be at the top of the list.

Trailerboat Seating

OULD YOU BUY A CAR THAT HAD AN UNCOMFORTABLE OR ROCK HARD SEAT? Probably not! When many of us purchase a boat, more specifically one that is a customised build, the seating or seats is often the most neglected area of the process. We take a look at some of the seating options that are available; everything from plastic moulded bin seats; right through to the more expensive suspension seats. The helm chair and its pedestal are two separate components. You can purchase them together as a unit from one manufacturer, or, because the interfaces between them come in standard sizes, you can mix and match chairs and pedestals from different suppliers. The first point to consider with regard to pedestals – and also the chair frames – is whether you want them in stainless or aluminium. Each material has one obvious advantage. The mirror finish of stainless steel looks very fine, but is comes at more of a cost. Aluminium is definitely not as corrosion resistant as stainless steel, and because it is a softer metal, aluminium swivels can get sloppy with wear over time. When it comes to seats you have a huge choice again from the very basic plastic shell which you can mount on a dedicated pedestal or on top of a moulded or fabricated base, through to deep cushioned designer seats that move every which way for total comfort and support. While traditional the vinyl covered bucket seats were fixed, today most come with a swivelling base or sliding mechanism so you can set the seat into a position that suits you. functions going into seats, not just with better and longer lasting UV resistant materials, such as Sunbrella, but also in their shape. Ergonomics now play a big part of seat design at the top end of the market and boat manufacturers are more conscious of getting the right seat for the best comfort of ride. Most of the helm chair developments in recent years have involved the contours and plushness of the chair. can adjust the tilts and angles of incidence of the seat cushion, backrest and headrest. Some seat backs now have horizontal rows of bolsters with different degrees of compressibility to suit the different parts of your back. You can get helm chairs with lumbar support, electric heating, cooling and a vibrator that works at different speeds for different parts of your body. Another type of seat – the folding bolster seat, can give one step better access than a slider. This is a seat on which the front half of the seat cushion folds up and creates an access space or a bolster that a skipper can stand and lean against for stability. While production boat builders tend to offer a more Springfield adjustable pedestal mount is easy to fit most boats.
basic, yet still highly functional helm seat, some custom boat builders have found discerning owners are prepared to pay a little extra for a more technical chair. SOFT RIDE A common feature now on trailer boats are gas filled pedestals. These give the chair a dampened springiness that enables the occupant to ride relatively smoothly over a boat’s impacts with the waves. Designed and developed in NZ in the early 1990’s by David Goldsborough and sold through his company MTI, the Softrider pedestal transformed seat comfort, especially in trailer boats. Now marketed in New Zealand by HiTech in Hamilton, the Softrider is designed to give you the softest ride possible. Made from marine grade aluminium that gives non-corrosive protection, the pedestal incorporates a unique feature of gas powered height adjustment, by lifting the Softrider handle up you can raise & lower height by 100mm. The new Inverted Softrider pedestal is designed to mount to an existing box or plinth. With a gas filled pedestal you simply lift a handle up so that you can raise and lower the pedestal height and select the height that is just right for you. When you release the lever, the pedestal is locked in that position. These are a great addition for any trailer boat, with a gas adjustable alloy seat pedestal priced from around $500. Basically a pedestal just bolts the chair to the deck, but there are different kinds of pedestals to suit different options. Pedestals can be made higher to elevate the chair, or with a longer floor plate for added strength. Another key thing in a pedestal helm chair is the slider. The slider allows the seat to move forward and back on its pedestal.

If you’re planing to use the seat a lot when driving, it pays to fit one that has a locking mechanism, enabling you to lock the seat in place. This is best because if the boat goes one way, the chair will swing the other, and you will risk a wrenched spine as you twist to stay on the controls just as the boat moves into a wave. A fixed pedestal mount with swivel is relatively inexpensive, priced from around $150. Rotationally moulded helm seats are quite popular and are supplied and manufactured by a number of companies. Many chairs are foam filled and have an aluminium inner frame for added strength and durability. Others are a more basic plastic seat, that come with easily removed and attached squab bases and back rests. These are ideal for a trailer boat that is stored outdoors. Popular brands are manufactured by companies such as Hi Tech and Springfield.

Where cockpit space could be at a minimum, you could have opt to have a bin seat on one side of the boat, and when not in use it can be taken out and left at home or on the beach if you wish to free up cockpit space for when water skiing. Probably the most common version is the isky/cool bin that comes with a clip on top cushion and still retains its intended use as a storage

maximise the internal space of a boat. Some of the more popular brands are IceStation, Icey-Tek and Engel. CUSTOMISED A lot of the customised aluminium manufacturers fabricate the seating in their boats, to incorporate storage underneath as well as a galley or a cabinet that converts to a bunk. Some choose to fabricate their own basic bench seat; or you could choose to have the movable slider and mount a helm chair; still giving you the security and comfort of a well constructed seat and also the versatility of one that you can adjust to suit. One of the popular choices now is the helm seat that has a lift up bolster in the seat base. This is a great option to have as it allows you to quickly have yourself sitting higher in the seat, providing extra visibility forward. This seat is most popular in small runabouts and ski boats, but is also becoming more widely seen in larger boats such as hardtops.

SUSPENSION SEATS Now if you are really serious about wanting a soft ride, then you can always consider shock mitigation technology, or to give it it’s better known term, suspension seating. must admit that I was filled with my own nautical lust from my first glimpse of this full bodied, hot blooded temptress with her curvaceous lines, flowing design and enticing aesthetics, plus an internal appeal that lures you to her clutches like a mythical siren. Let’s face it, there aren’t many alloy cats in the world that you could call “elegant” or “sexy” like this un! Whilst the C-8000 is easily trailered with its 2.5m beam, Dale lives on a waterfront property on the Caloundra canal system and moors the boat on an inflatable berth. He’s an avid fisherman who loves the seafaring ability of the tough plate aluminium hull for a number of reasons. ALLOY BOAT 2018 ISSUE #15
The Caioundra bar is often shallow and quite treacherous yet the Moda confidently takes it in its stride whether running into the swell on the way to sea, or back in over the shallow sandbars that often seem to emerge from the depths like some mythical Kraken reaching upwards to engulf unsuspecting prey.
CUSHIONED RIDE The twin hull gives a smooth and highly predictable ride jumping easily onto its cushion of air with the grunt of twin Mercury Verado 150hp engines that power the package up to a very respectable 64kmh at 5700 rpm. The combination gives

the immediate power, plus the torque needed so often in bar crossings. It’s a long way to the shelf yet the Moda is a very capable armour plated battlewagon that tames the long journey through the slop and swell. It sits high and proud planing easily across the fray with its stable footing and air cushioned tunnel creating an exceptionally soft ride that tempts you to travel further, and often faster than you ever dreamed. There is no hint of the forward body slam that often grips many competitors with its proud bow riding with a truly confident, slightly nose high seafaring attitude. Whilst the concept is purely Moda, the hull design is true Kiwi with renowned marine architect Scott Robson refining the concept with a unique design that certainly sets a premium standard amongst the field of ocean capable catamarans. The strong hull has a bullet proof 6mm bottom and unique sponsons with wide chines designed to create the beam and planing surface of a much wider boat. She pops the hull to plane WWW.BOATMAGS.COM
very quickly with almost unnoticeable transition and very minimal bow rise. The C-8000 has a most unique tracking ability that turns easily without the outward lean that can scare the hell out of you in many opposition twin hull designs.
COMFORTABLE ACCOMMODATION Yet the Moda offers Dale a number of other advantages. He’s a busy professional who loves his quiet time often choosing to nose the boat up onto a white sandy beach or overnight mooring in the extensive tidal estuary to enjoy the serenity of his idyllic surrounds. He has all of the facilities for comfortable accommodation with a large double berth in the wide forward cabin. There’s not a huge amount of head room due to the upward curvature of the tunnel at the bow but the design is quite adequate and very comfortable for an eight metre cat. The cabin volume is enhanced by the cat’s full beam all the way to the pickle fork bow.

Moda have designed a compact but very workable head with hot/cold shower located immediately as you step down into the deep sponson on the port side. It has a simple clip-in spray screen that keeps the rest of the cabin dry, and a drain in the floor. There’s a tonne of storage under the double berth as well as sensible LED lighting plus a large forward hatch and twin fans for ventilation. This one isn’t a lock up cabin but it does have a soft privacy screen as a doorway. Moda offer a number of optional cabin and access layouts. Another strong pre-requisite for Dale’s selection is the huge amount of deck space inherent to the catamaran design, plus the immense stability. This factor is highly relevant to any would-be purchaser, but perhaps far more-so in this instance as his son is confined to a wheelchair. Moda designed and constructed a wide, hinged side door and ramp from the mooring pontoon, and they are currently discussing a further davit style system to make life even easier. The extended hard top is an absolute must in the harsh northern sunshine and Moda fitted a SureShade wind out extension awning that covers the expansive cockpit. I have seen all sorts of concoctions for extended awnings and in my opinion this one is by far the best.
SEADEK SOLE Dales C-8000 has been fitted with SeaDek throughout, including the combings and internal floor. It provides a very manageable, easily cleaned surface that is soft and comfortable underfoot in all weather conditions. The visual appeal of the SeaDek enhances the air of premium quality when teamed with the midnight blue hull and polar white decks. Plus it drastically reduces glare and reflection, and is cool in summer and warm in winter. The internal layout is attractive, functional and spacious blending a long list of sensible fittings and accessories. The helm is a

skippers dream with panoramic vision through the chic and highly dignified one piece curved windscreen. I hate to imagine the cost involved in this little piece of opulence but it certainly adds to the overall appeal, vision and refined aesthetics. The dash is a relatively simple affair but one that ticks all of the boxes. There’s a large horizontal section for keeping those nick knacks that need to be close at hand such as telephones; and I find it a terrific place to quickly throw lures, traces, tackle and terminal equipment when the excitement explodes on the trolling rods. From a skipper’s perspective the helm is comfortable either seated or standing and the array of gauges, electronics and instruments are immediately at hand. This craft was fitted with one of the first Simrad NSS-16 multi-function displays including radar and a 600watt through hull transducer that has performed faultlessly. The unique sponson design with its fine entry is stepped below the stem before forming quite wide running WWW.BOATMAGS.COM
planks that taper toward the stern. The flat running surfaces reduce the cavitation that can create problems for transducer mounting in others.
FEATURE RICH Other features include Lewmar capstan winch controls, Mercury VesselView 7” display, auto-pilot, switch panels, fuel gauges and twin binnacle electronic controls for the Verado’s. Note Moda will fit nothing but electronic, “fly by wire” engines recognising their superior control, fitting and maintenance features. You will love the level of comfort from the superb beige leatherette upholstery including the helmsman style skipper and passenger seats. There’s a really smart side lounge with a large Waeco fridge/freezer on sliding tracks below. Premium craftsmanship abounds throughout but is particularly evident in the aluminium construction including welding, finish and rolled

corners especially in the internal cabinetry. I believe the level of alloy manufacture to be some of the highest I have witnessed. To the starboard is a functional kitchenette complete with a Dometic 3 burner gas stove, pressurised sink with hot and cold water and a large amount of storage with preparation bench. Some may call it a weekender but I could be comfortable for months. Moda haven’t just created a large, functional deck area, it’s a virtual dance floor! The layout will please a tribe of offshore fisho’s, a gang of divers or quickly convert for an evening chardy cruise with the pop-up rear seats extended the seating for up to six passengers. You can be sure that you won’t spill your drinks with the maximised stability. Dale’s boat also features padded combings throughout and a nifty removable rear doorway that flows through to the platform between the engines with its drop down boarding ladder. There’s a cutting board to the port and plumbed live bait tank starboard as well as properly placed rod holders and a rocket launcher overhead. Under floor are twin 200 litre fuel and a 100 litre water tank with full foam filling throughout. The only difference between the recreational and commercial build is the inspection process during construction and upgraded survey accessories.

If you have a trailer boat from a Kiwi manufacturer,. There’s a good chance you have a Hi Tech seat, bait board or even a live bait tank that was made by Hamilton-based Hi Tech Plastics. AB talked to Jared Mills about the company, its products and its future.

ROTHERS Jared and Bevan Mills have enthusiastically worked in the business for the last 13 years after their father purchased the company in 2002. Both Jared and Bevan take pride in their industry reputation and use New Zealand based suppliers to ensure our products are of the highest quality. They supply every boat builder in New Zealand with some form of product and also provide over 200 Marine Dealers NZ wide. They have full in-house CAD design capabilities for the manufacture of new moulds and custom-made products. Custom-moulding is a vital service that can drastically improve the performance of a boat; whether it’s a live bait tank, bait board, water/effluent tank or a comfort enhancing seat, the team at Hi Tech Plastics have the skills and knowledge to produce the perfect piece to fit the jigsaw.
WHEN DID YOU TAKE OVER THE COMPANY? Our father Eric was having industrial products made by Hi Tech Plastics and in 2002 brought the company. Within a few years both myself and Bevan joined the company and since then it has grown considerably. When we took over the company, we were not only making seats but a lot of industrial moulding such as water systems, septic tanks systems, playground and automotive equipment, all of which we still do today. On the premises, we have around 400 moulds, some of which we own and some are owned by customers. WHAT ARE YOUR STAFF LEVELS? We have a small team of eight, including Bevan and myself. What we do is very labour intensive and nothing pops out in a hurry. We have 12 ovens, with one man responsible for two ovens and another who runs the finishing shop and custom area. We also have a dedicated pedestal base assembly area that takes care of our Softrider pedestals. Bevan looks after all the CAD design and running factory and I am responsible for sales and marketing. We have a fabulous team of guys that have been with us for quite a while.
WHEN DID HI TECH PLASTICS START? Hi Tech Plastics all started when in the early 1990s when Jim Perry brought a seat mould and started making rotationally moulded seats for Ramco Boats. The seat was called the Hi Tech 1500, which we still use today and from which over 26000 seats have been produced. So primarily the company was formed from one seat built for one company. From that seat, the company grew and within a few years had around 30 different seat models designed not only for Ramco but also to other manufacturers and the public.

WHAT IS THE COMPANY STRUCTURE? We have a number of divisions within the company. The plastic welding looks after a lot of the custom work, especially when it comes to tanks and then the rotational moulding side of the business is huge which incorporates seats, industrial mouldings

and just about anything that we can put in an oven and mould. On top of that we have a separate section selling and marketing not only our own seats but also international brands such as Scot Seats. We specialise in small products with small runs. In fact, if you only want one item, then we are happy to oblige, something that a lot of the more significant names in our business will not do. We can take your idea from concept to the finished product and it is all done in-house.
seats from $80 through to $9500, so we have a size and seat to suit any boat. HOW DID YOU GET INTO SHOCK MITIGATION SEATING? We got approached a few years ago by Scot Seats in the UK to become their NZ agent for their shock mitigation seats and it has gone well for us, especially the jockey seat range. We only look after the marine side of the business for both commercial and recreational, with the product now being used by Coast Guard and recreational vessels. We use both their own seats as well as our own, it’s just a matter of what a customer requires and the best fit for their boat. Our High End range is used both in larger trailer boats as well as luxury launches by builders such as Dickey Boats and White Pointer.
WHAT HAPPENS TO THE WASTE PLASTIC? The powder we use is a medium density polyethylene, which is UV stabilised and entirely recyclable. This means all the waste and off-cuts can be used again and even the bags the powder comes in and the pallets they arrive on are all 100% recycled. Nothing ends up in the landfill! We don’t allow anything to go into the factory that can’t be recycled.
WHAT ABOUT EXPORT? Apart from Australia which we supply most of our products it’s not huge, but we are selling our Softrider pedestals into the UK and the tuna tubes into Florida and Hawaii.
WHEN DID THE MARINE SIDE OF THE BUSINESS REALLY DEVELOP? We started with a few seats and while that side of the business has grown hugely, we have diversified into other products such as live bait tanks, tuna tubes and bait boards. Marine is now about 30% of the business and we produce around 300 seats a month for boat builders and dealers. When we purchased Marine Tech Industries, we were able to bring the Softrider pedestal manufacture into the business and currently, we are producing dozens a month. We offer marine WWW.BOATMAGS.COM
WHAT’S THE FUTURE FOR HI TECH PLASTICS? We have just added another oven and we are importing other products from overseas, not only in the seating range. With around two new moulds a month we are working at about 95% capacity, so we are looking for ways to increase production to keep up with the growing demand.

hereas most buyers of a 6-metre aluminium trailer boat are primarily just after a good fishing boat, the new owner of Innovision’s latest 616 Explorer was considerably more demanding. He wanted a good cruising boat, able to be used for overnighting; a boat capable of “commuting” from his home on Waiheke Island to his holiday house in Coromandel; and a serious fishing platform, complete with hard-wired outlets for his electric reels. He had long admired the Innovision’s trademark plumb bow and had been looking for a while at the company’s 515 Sport before deciding he needed a 6-metre vessel. After deciding that the new Innovision 616 Explorer was “easily” the roomiest 6-metre on the market, he found he also liked the helm station (“nice, neat and flush”); the integral bait station (“awesome”) and the “can do” attitude of Innovision owner, designer and builder, Simon Minoprio. Although Simon does design and build to set sizes (current models so far include 515, 585, 605 and 616), virtually every
boat is its own model, customised to meet its owner’s needs. This latest iteration of the 616 Explorer, for instance, is finished to the highest spec yet. “It boasts just about every extra possible,” jokes Simon, “apart from outriggers and window wipers.” Because it will regularly transit across the Firth of Thames, an area known for its conflicting currents and often short, sharp chop, construction is very solid and there are strong hand grips carefully positioned throughout. Even the boarding platform, with its step-thru’ access on both port and starboard, seems supersized, easily big enough to accommodate the Yamaha 175hp 4-stroke outboard, with room left over for substantial pushpit “cages” if desired. FOCUSED ON FISHING As is usual with a boat intended for serious fishing, the transom area is dedicated to things piscatorial. There are large round tuna tubes in each quarter, a live bait tank under the port step-

thru’ and that “awesome” island transom bait station. This latter features 5 rod holders to complement the 8 in the wide side decks and another 8 in the rocket launcher. There is also a hard plastic baitboard screwed into the middle section and flanked by two enclosed open areas ideal for stray hooks, sinkers or thawing pieces of bait. It also features a large, lockable tackle drawer. Under this is a totally enclosed double battery locker, safely high off the deck and also home to the isolating switches and the connection bus for the Zipwake automatic trim tab system. Lower still is access to bilge with the fuel filter, hydraulic steering unit and bilge pump all protected behind a drop-down alloy hatch. Like many of New Zealand’s leading trailerboat designers, Simon Minoprio is one of those fellows who is always thinking about ways to make things better, easier and more enjoyable for those who spend time on his boats. His latest addition is a

perfectly positioned tube holder for the coiled washdown hose, high up at the aft end of the port side locker. Cockpit stowage is in the large carpeted side lockers, under the starboard walkthru’ and in a spacious underfloor locker that comes complete with lift-out hard plastic liners. UNDER THE HARDTOP The 616’s seating consists of two permanent padded bench-style seats for the skipper and crew, with drop-down seats behind for the kids or other passengers. There is a handgrip-style footrest for the skipper while the upstand separating the cockpit from the cabin serves the same function for crew. That much-admired helm station has an unusual but attractive asymmetric shape and is just the right size to accommodate all the screens, instrument gauges and control panels one could want on a 6-metre craft. Pride of place is occupied by the Raymarine Axiom 12” MFD,

delivering charting, CHIRP DownVision, CHIRP SideVision and 3D sonar information. Below this, flanking the wheel, are the BlueSea DC panels, Maxwell RC6 and Rule bilge pump controls (to port) and the Yamaha digital instrumentation, the Raymarine VHF and the Zipwake auto trim tabs’ controls. Completing the 616’s electronics package is the Fusion MSRA55 stereo with its two waterproof speakers centrally mounted in the open carpeted lockers alongside the seating modules. There is also a great space for old-fashioned paper charts, cruising and fishing guides and the like in the large carpeted space above the cabin. Smaller objects such as sunglasses, cellphones, wallets and keys find a safe haven in the small, again carpeted, lockers on each side. The 616’s cabin is a large, spacious affair, boasting 2m-long bunks, an infill that converts the entire area into a giant berth and a Jabsco marine toilet, cleverly positioned out of the way on starboard, directly behind the helm station. A canvas curtain across the entrance provides the privacy and a Vetus Slimline hatch the ventilation. All lighting on board is LED with a practical red/white light under the hardtop, white cockpit lights for night fishing, blue lights under the side decks, a spotlight bar on the cabin top and attractive blue underwater lights for attractive baitfish and looking good.

ENCLOSING THE COCKPIT Because the 616’s owner is keen on extended cruising and overnighting, he wanted to be able to fully enclose the cockpit. Simon has achieved this by creating a structurally sound enclosure that has been designed to look like an integral part of the boat rather than a caravan-type add-on. To do this he has used twin powder-coated aluminium poles that sit in the aft-most side deck rod holders and a selection of multiple separate clear panels. These include the “roof”, two large and two small side curtains and a three-segment rear curtain. The result is as attractive as such an enclosure can be and one that can only really be appreciated from on board. It literally feels as though the interior space has been doubled, one is completely protected by the elements and yet still able to enjoy all-round visibility. Even better, the multi-panel design means one has an almost infinite choice of combinations depending on weather, wind strength and direction and whether one wants to continue fishing or not. IMPRESSIVE PERFORMANCE Have now driven several of Simon Minoprio’s Innovision models I am well acquainted with how well they perform. This owes a lot to that distinctive plump bow. By dropping the stem virtually directly down to the waterline, Simon’s ensures his vessels’ waterline is virtually as long as their overall length. And we all know that, when it comes to handling chop and flattening out those waves, there really is no substitute for waterline length. Innovision boats also boast a fine entry, wide shoulders and hydrodynamic stability chines. Together they combine to produce a large volume boat and a smooth, even ride almost totally regardless of the conditions or the strength or direction of the waves. In practical terms, that means the 616 covers ground like a far larger boat, lands softly when it does leave the sea and corners at high speed like a jetboat. The first time I drove an Innovision, I spent a considerable time trying to make it misbehave, trying to find a flaw of some type
