Yachting & Sportfishing in 2022 We welcome 2022 with a huge sigh of relief and renewed expectations. A whole slate of sailing regattas and fishing tournaments are back and better than ever. The Halifax River Yacht Club is hosting the Commode’s Cup Offshore Race Series from April to October, while the St. Augustine Yacht Club is having their annual St Augustine Race Week again this April, along with the 2022 Regatta of Lights Boat Parade in December. The New Smyrna Beach Big Game Tournament is on again in late May, and the Ancient City Game Fish Association 2022 Challenge is set for July. And the Halifax Sportfishing Club is launching their 2nd Annual Kingfish Tournament in August. The CCA (Coastal Conservation Association) is promoting catch and release practices, and of course The Billfish Foundation has guidelines to enjoy and protect our treasured big game fish for future generations. The Riverside Conservancy Center in Edgewater is enabling local scientists and volunteers to restore and protect our shoreline with the Protect Our Lagoon campaign.

Interview with Capt. Rick Trussell - Vulcan Charters

Y&SFG – HI CAPT. RICK. THANKS FOR TAKING THE TIME TO ANSWER A FEW QUESTIONS. LET’S START AT THE BEGINNING. WHERE DID YOU START OUT FISHING? Capt. Rick – I was under 14 years old when I got my first boat. I fished up in Maryland in the Susquehanna River, the Conowingo Dam, and where the Susquehanna River dumps into the Bay. I caught hybrid bass, walleye, and muskie. Years later I got a 25’ Mako with twin Johnsons. We had to go 72 miles off Ocean City to get to where the wahoo and tuna are. We caught only a few Blue Marlin but lots of White Marlin and Sharks. I’m 71 years old now.

Y&SFG – HOW DID YOU DECIDE TO BECOME A CHARTER FISHING CAPTAIN? Capt. Rick – So I am one of the owners of Phoenix East Aviation Flight School in Daytona Beach, and we had lots of extremely wealthy kids who came over from Greece, Norway, we even had a Saudi Prince. I had a 21’ center console Wellcraft and I’d take them out fishing on weekends. They would send photos to their families back home, and the next thing I knew their uncles and relatives would be heading over. I had a Greek millionaire give me a $1000 tip once. So I decided to have a bigger boat. In ’04 I got my USCG six pack charter license and in “06 I incorporated as Vulcan Charters. I went from a hobby to a legal business. Named after Vulcan, the Roman God of Fire. Lucky for me I was befriended by the oldest living captain, John Ellis of the Rainbow III. This year I caught the #1 bull dolphin and a lot of it is due to my experience. We made a good run of it!

Y&SFG – WHAT IS THE BIGGEST FISH YOU’VE CAUGHT? Capt. Rick – It was a 275 lb. Blue Marlin in the U.S. Virgin Islands off St. John off the Puerto Rico Trench. I didn’t catch any Marlin in Costa Rica. Only big pacific sailfish, but I did catch a few smaller blue marlin off of Ocean city. The sharks we caught up there were 90 % Mako sharks. (continued on page 33)

Yachting & Sportfishing: Tell us about your husband Theo and how he fell in love with “Metal Art”. Amber: It was kind of an accidental introduction, He wanted a plasma machine to cut parts for bikes, cars, stuff like that. Then one day he said, “Hmmm, I saw a flat steel piece online. What can I do to stand out amongst the crowd?” Our pieces started to rust, so we moved to aluminum. We paid people to powder coat, then we decided we might as well do it ourselves. A lot of people use paints. We came across a gentleman who uses translucent acetonebased dye that we mix in house. Anything colored is one of a kind. They are unique hand mixed colors. The overspray on blue/ yellow gives you that green patina. It doesn’t fade in the sun! Anything else eventually fades over time. Y & SF: How did you come up with your custom functional designs like trailer hitch covers, rod holders, license plate holders?

Amber: The trailer hitch covers happened when we saw one. Theo has a truck, and the ones available were cheaply made vinyl decals that peeled. We wanted something more solid. The license plate holders were an extension of the hitch covers.

At the time no one was doing them. I like being a trend setter. Ours are solid, not tin from China that pits, or plastic that peels and cracks. We can do custom silhouettes too. We recently came up with the rod racks because we wanted to appeal to a different market. We fish and have a lot of friends who fish. Y & SF: Do you still fabricate custom motorcycle parts and do custom welding? Amber: Yes, we still do custom welding, usually by referrals. We also do airplane parts. Y & SF: Tell us what is your favorite kind of fish or sea creature to replicate? Amber: I love sea turtles! Theo just made a 4’ sea turtle for a client to hang on his back porch. 904.669.5153 Challenge Dates: July 8 – 11, 2022 The Ancient City Challenge Tournaments is a four-day tournament and celebration of fishing in the Ancient City. Our beloved, not-for-profit and locally produced fishing tournament has nearly two decades of history in St. Johns County and is a tournament that celebrates family fun, our waterways and our community. Most proceeds from the event go to support local charities and to our offshore restoration efforts including the upkeep of our 40-acre artificial reefs which include Andy King Reef, Honest Jim Blalock Reef and our “Eternal Reef” which is dedicated to the placement of reef balls that provides the opportunity for families to place the ashes of loved ones as a final resting place. For the fourth year, as part of our conservation efforts, we are encouraging live release of all redfish after weigh-in. The Coastal Conservation Association (CCA) will be on site to assist with proper release, questions and techniques. This tournament would not be possible without the help of our many volunteers and sponsors. We hope that you enjoy the weekend, thank the volunteers for their efforts, and support our sponsors when you can.

RELEASE RECOMMENDATIONS Modifying the types of hooks you use can significantly affect a fish’s chances for survival after it is released. When fishing with natural bait (dead or alive), IGFA strongly encourages the use of non-offset circle hooks. Extensive research on species from salmon to sailfish has demonstrated that circle hooks gut hook significantly fewer fish without sacrificing catch rates. Lures that have treble hooks should have the barbs bent down or removed to facilitate easier hook removal. Interested in the science behind circle hooks? Read Circle hooks, 'J' hooks and drop-back time: a hook performance study of the south Florida recreational livebait fishery for sailfish, Istiophorus platypterus published in Fisheries Management and Ecology in 2007.

If you’re not going to photograph your fish or document it for record purposes, the best method is to not remove the fish from the water. In-water releases can be aided by the use of de-hooking devices that eliminate the need to boat the fish and keep hands safe distances away from the fish. If the fish has swallowed the hook, it is much better for the angler to cut the leader as close to the fish as possible, rather than trying to forcibly remove the hook. If a fish needs to be removed from the water to remove the hook and/or document it for record purposes, anglers should use either their hands or knotless, rubberized landing net. Most small to moderately large sized fish can be landed by hand. Ideally, this should be done with wet hands or soft, wet gloves to minimize slime and scale loss. Lip gripping devices may be used to help subdue fish. However, they should not be used to hoist fish vertically out of the water, as this can cause damage to jaw muscle and bone as well as to internal organs. The best method for removing fish from the water is to grip the fish or the lower jaw and support the fish’s underside. Again, the point is always to hold fish horizontally and not vertically.

PROTECT OUR LAGOON CAMPAIGN

The Indian River Lagoon (IRL) is home to an incredible variety of life. As part of the Be Floridian Now campaign, and in partnership with Project H2O, along with some help from our caring locals, we are striving to protect our lagoon and restore this ecosystem back to health. But what exactly is the issue, you may ask? Too many nutrients! This excess within the IRL can lead to many imbalances in the ecosystem, including harmful algal blooms. Overabundant nutrients can come from many sources, such as lawn fertilizers, pet waste, lawn clippings, agricultural runoff, and inefficient septic systems. This is quite concerning. However, there is something YOU can do, right now to help! Skip the fertilizer, herbicides, and pesticides on your lawn and learn about your local fertilizer ordinances. You can even opt for native or Florida-friendly plants that require less watering. The less harmful run-off we have, the less contaminated the water will get. Oh, and be sure to pick up after young Fido. Pet waste also causes harm to the IRL with excess nutrients.

Marine Insurance Tips 1) Current Trends in Marine Insurance: We are presently in a tough market for marine insurance, especially on vessels over 30 feet and over 15 years of age.

policy changes (at renewal---not mid-term of a policy period) more easily as the market dicatates. In general, it is better to obtain insurance with an “Admitted” carrier, but often this is not possible.

South Florida is considered to be a higher risk area with theft issues, coastal hurricane exposure, a litigious environment, among other factors.

Another current trend is for some insurance providers to require vessels not be kept on a lift during a hurricane. It may seem like a lift is a safe place to secure a vessel, BUT loss experience has shown that lifts are not designed to handle the torque and wind load of a powerful storm. Another issue with securing a vessel to a lift is storm surge, where the water raises up and over or into the vessel.

Within the last few months, a couple of yacht insurance carriers have begun non-renewing policies and have pulled out of the State of Florida entirely, pushing some vessels into the surplus lines market (known as non-admitted carriers). A non-admitted carrier is less regulated by the State insurance department, not financially backed by the Florida Insurance Guarantee Association “FIGA”, and can raise and lower rates and make

safety course, or obtaining a Captain’s license, are both good ways. On smaller vessels most insurance companies give credit for having prior insurance, having favorable credit, being claim free, owning a home, and having a safe place to moor/store the vessel. On larger vessels and those over 10 years of age, an in and out of water survey is most often required every three years (some carriers require within the last 18 months). It is important to keep this in mind, next time you have the vessel hauled out for annual maintenance, in case it is time for a new survey. On high value vessels and most importantly vessels with multiple outboard engines, it is normally required that the vessel have a GPS theft tracking device—and that the device have a current monitoring contract in effect at the time of a loss. 3) Hurricane Preparedness It is vital to have a hurricane plan in place. Most seasoned boat owners and those who have been through a hurricane are more familiar with the process than newer boaters. Hauling a vessel out of the water and securing it inside a building or next to a house on a trailer is a good idea. If a vessel will remain in the water, remove all loose covers & canvas, lower or remove outriggers, antennas, etc. Some insurance carriers exclude coverage if a vessel is on a lift during a storm (check your policy). Plan in advance and have a backup plan if needed. 4) Things not to claim: Insurance is meant to provide protection

for catastrophic loss, and is not designed to be a maintenance plan. A small scratch in the gelcoat or a minor dent on a prop should be taken care of out of pocket. It often saves a significant amount of money to carry higher deductibles and self insure for smaller issues. 5) Why it is more expensive to title a vessel in a Corporation or LLC Be aware that some insurance companies charge extra premium if a vessel is not titled in an individual name. A corporation/trust/LLC is a different type of entity, often with other exposures, and although these could be a way to protect assets and limit liability, this is not always the case. I had my heart set on a brand new Yellowfin over in Bradenton. I had a 26’6” Supersport Proline with twin 150 hp Dorados. It was too light, and I got beat on too much. So, I asked him if he wanted to do a trade out and he said nope! 30% down. Then someone there told me they had a Regulator over at Galati. The Regulator is known for its “Carolina Bow” – the flared bow design that keeps you dry in the boat. Plus, the Regulator has 30% more dense composite, so it sits lower (same as a Grady-White). I love the boat. The 29-footer does everything. It’s a very seaworthy boat, and it’s fully equipped with a satellite phone and an EPIRB.

Y&SFG – HOW IS THE FISHING OUT OF THE PONCE INLET THESE DAYS? Capt. Rick – It’s getting better. Fishing is very equivalent to hunting. My specialty is trolling. Looking for pelagics like tuna, dolphin, kingfish, wahoo, cobia. You have to learn the best migration routes to cover the most live bottom to get out to where you’re going. It just so happens “The Party Ground” just off New Smyrna Beach 19 miles is one of the largest live bottoms on the East Coast. That’s what keeps a bunch of charter captains in the area. I caught a 71 lb. wahoo recently and my daughter caught a 54 lb. wahoo.
