RARE LUXURY OFFERING

Local experts provide a full-service approach, along with a keen eye for detail by Tom Connor

When a house along the Rhode Island coastline comes on the market, realtors have a relatively easy sell. From Westerly and Watch Hill to Jamestown and Newport, so desirable has residential property become that in the rare event a listing was built by Jeff Sweenor, an agent’s pitch gets easier still: “It’s a Sweenor home!”

People report driving through neighborhoods in those and other popular coastal towns and recognizing a Sweenor designed and built house almost immediately. There’s a certain sharpness and crispness to the exterior trim and siding, and an exquisite attention to detail, that enable even new construction by the Wakefield, Rhode Island-based company to look as if it’s always been there—and always will be.

After 35 years of building large, luxurious houses on or within sight of the Atlantic Ocean, Sweenor and his 50-plus person team seem to have an almost mystical relationship with the 400-mile coastline.

Longevity and familiarity give them an uncanny understanding of the effect of waves, wind, tides and salt air on roofs, siding, windows and concrete. As such, they are able to navigate for homeowners the stringent state and Federal environmental

regulations that help keep the coastline pristine and property values high.

“We’re dealing with wave action, we’re dealing with flood and wind zones,” says Sweenor, 62, who founded the company in 1989. It hasn’t exactly been a breeze. They’re building in the highest hurricane zone, equivalent to the Miami-Dade zone, and to a standard far exceeding codes for energy, air quality and moisture mitigation.

“We dance the dance,” Sweenor adds, “contending with those and other forces while making sure a project not only conforms to regulations, but also is extraordinary.”

“Extraordinary” is the operative word here.

Traditionally in new construction, architects will propose a project to a number of contractors, who calculate time and materials in bidding for the job and who then, in turn, negotiate with subcontractors. The finished product may be well-built but it’s likely to be average.

“We don’t do average,” Sweenor says simply.

The company’s sprawling 3,200-square-foot shop hums with industry and efficiency. State-of-the-art technology and top-ofthe-line machinery produce precision cutting for the gorgeous custom cabinetry and architectural millwork that define Sweenor interiors.

The shop gives Sweenor Builders full control over the entire design-build process. But it also allows for a continual in-person feedback loop for the extended family of career craftsmen and craftswomen who share a singular passion for excellence.

Since the majority of clients look to the Rhode Island coast for vacation homes and summers spent outdoors, interiors and exteriors are designed simultaneously—hence “design-build” in the company profile—as opposed to traditional homes that are built first and landscaping is considered an afterthought.

Sweenor doesn’t do afterthoughts, either.

A new project starts at the civil engineering level and with the immediate engagement of the company’s landscape architect. The transition from the interior to the exterior appears seamless because any shortcomings in design are spotted and corrected well before actual construction.

“We’re designing from the inside out and managing on the desk, not in the field,” Swenor says. “It’s a lot easier to use an eraser than it is to use a Sawzall (a powerful electric saw used in remodeling or demolition).

At the same time, since many customers maintain year-round, fully-furnished homes elsewhere, the interior design team often custom creates entire new living environments—everything from couches, throw pillows, rugs, window treatments, towels and bedding to china, dishware, silverware and the cabinets where all those items are stored.

When all is said and done, it’s the details that both attract and—because that's where the bulk of expenses lie—thin the crowd.

“We’re not for everybody,” Jeff Sweenor advises. “But when you choose us, you're going to get those details. That's mandatory. We don't skimp on details, because they’re who we are!”

Devastation Strikes Watch Hill

A

major fire and hurricane cause destruction and loss in 1938

Ayear of unimaginable destruction in 1938, Watch Hill faced a series of catastrophic events and challenges that tested the community’s resilience. The year began with optimism, as merchants and resort owners anticipated some recovery during the middle of the Great Depression, and they looked forward to a bustling summer season based on July hotel bookings. However, the community was tested by a devastating fire in the winter and a historic September hurricane, both of which left lasting scars on the village and the heartbreaking loss of life.

February Fire on Bay Street

During the early morning hours of February 15, 1938, a fire broke out in the heart of Watch Hill. At approximately 2:45 a.m., surfman Edward McSweeney of the Watch Hill Coast Guard Station observed black smoke and flames rising above the village bluff while returning from his East Beach patrol. Station lookout Oliver A. St. Sauveur likewise witnessed the fire lighting up the town. Having burned for more than an hour before firefighters arrived, the block was fully involved. The fire consumed several structures along Bay Street, beginning at the Columbia House (now Olympia Tea Room) and advancing nearly as far as Larkin Road. The blaze destroyed the Sisson Block of stores and five buildings, resulting in the

loss of businesses, including Vars Brothers Drug Store, Sisson’s Restaurant, McCarthy Linen Shop, Furcolo Shoe Repairing Shop and Rose’s Garage. In addition, a two-story building and four cottages on Mastuxet Terrace (present-day Olympia Way) were also destroyed. While the Columbia House suffered extensive damage and was gutted, it ultimately escaped complete destruction.

Firefighters from Watch Hill, Westerly, Misquamicut and the Coast Guard brought the fire under control by 7:00 am, successfully preventing its spread to the Holiday House

(currently Taylor Swift’s residence) and cottages on Bluff Avenue. The damage was the worst since the Great Fire of 1916, causing losses that exceeded $50,000—more than $1 million in today’s terms—and threatening the upcoming summer season. Despite this setback, the stores were rebuilt in time for summer.

The Hurricane of September 1938

On September 21, 1938, Watch Hill was struck by a historic hurricane, called the Long Island Express due to its rapid movement, traveling

more than 40 mph across Long Island Sound and arriving at Watch Hill during an astronomically high tide with sustained winds over 100 mph.

The storm obliterated 44 cottages on Napatree Point and generated a storm surge of 20 to 25 feet, with seismic activity from the crashing waves detected as far as Alaska. Of those on Napatree, 15 people lost their lives, while 27 managed to survive by holding onto wreckage and floating across the bay to the Connecticut shoreline. The hurricane caused widespread devastation throughout New England, resulting in 680 deaths and extensive inland damage all the way to Vermont. In Watch Hill, the Ocean House, Narragansett House and the Plimpton Hotel suffered heavy

damage. The Plimpton House was demolished after losing its roof during the storm. The recently installed Village Park was also wiped out, along with the beach and Yacht clubs.

Recovery and Resilience

In the aftermath, the owners of Ocean House took steps to minimize reports of destruction, hoping to prevent cancellations for the following summer. A letter dated September 28, 1938, from Louis Miller to his wife Augustine, the owners of Ocean House—preserved by the Westerly Historical Society through Rebecca Purdum—provides a comprehensive account of the hotel’s issues, including the loss of sections of the roof, water infiltration, destruction of the Marine Deck

and porch columns, broken windows, beach erosion and debris. Louis Miller expressed concern regarding guest retention for the upcoming summer season, advising Augustine to reassure clients that only minor repairs were required, and affirming the structural soundness and readiness of Ocean House for reopening. Despite these challenges, the Millers, along with other hotel operators and property owners, acted swiftly to engage contractors to restore the resort before the 1939 season.

The year 1938 stands as a defining period in Watch Hill’s history, marked by extraordinary loss and destruction, but also by the community’s unwavering determination to rebuild and move forward.

OCEAN STATE PYROTECHNICS

John Ruggieri, Owner

Celebrating 24 years at Ocean State Pyrotechnics, John Ruggieri started the company to create unique displays and “not the kind other companies shoot.”

Since 2011, he has orchestrated the Ocean House fireworks for Fourth of July, resort weddings and special events.

Fireworks Style: “Bright color, vivid effects and multi-tiered layering. The quality is only half of what makes the fireworks spectacular. The pacing and layering bring emotion to the display. Anybody can play the notes, but it takes an artist to play the music.”

The Method: “The Ocean House displays from a barge are multi-tiered, layered shows. The other types there and at Weekapaug Inn are the 1.4 displays, used for weddings and celebrations that require tighter distances.”

Special Effects: “I've done special effects for many decades, from large movie and TV productions in New York, Atlanta and Boston, running the gambit from Sopranos to Happy Gilmore 2.”

About Ocean State Pyrotechnics: With over 200 combined years of pyrotechnic experience, John and his team create large-scale fireworks displays for Ocean House, Weekapaug Inn, country clubs and events. The company has a special effects division for movies and television.

the red-clay tennis court or putting green, in the billiards room, or gathering around the baby grand piano. And within walking distance to Watch Hill Village and Ocean House, an historic captain’s cottage has been thoughtfully renovated and decorated in a coastal New England style. Ocean House’s five-star standards pervade. Beds are made up in luxurious linens, and appliances

INTERNATIONAL REALTY

COTTAGE ON THE LINKS

17-19 East Hills Road

Golfers and their active multi-generational families and friends will love this newest property, offering direct access to the premier Misquamicut Golf Course, a private 18-hole course originally designed by Donald Ross, the legendary professional golfer and golf course architect. The ocean air, scenic rolling fairways, fast greens and notable holes, including a top example of the volcano and a three-par finish, create a memorable and challenging loop.

Cottage on The Links encompasses a newly renovated four-bedroom main house and a one-bedroom guest house, sleeping a total of 10. Accommodations include a kingbedded primary suite with private balcony, and two queen bedrooms on the second floor, and one king bedroom and entertainment room on the third floor. The guest house has one queen bedroom, a full bath and a kitchenette.

The third floor beckons with an entertainment room featuring an oversized sofa, along with a charming, covered deck overlooking the fairway. The interiors are bright, with multiple windows and views of the course. The interior design, with its nod to New England golfing history, is contemporary and serene. Bathrooms are sleek, with upscale finishes. Original antique details of the 1920s house include a tiled fireplace in the kitchen and leaded windows.

An outdoor swimming pool and stone patio provide a relaxing haven to enjoy after a day on the links. This place is an ace.

SEAWOOD ESTATE

23 Shore Road

Perched atop the highest peak of Watch Hill, Seawood Estate is a private five-acre playground designed for the art of the "good life" with world-class amenities for every generation. The ultimate host’s heaven, Seawood is for those who believe entertaining is a high art form. The indooroutdoor flow continues in a series of expansive decks and covered lounging porch, with a fire feature and outdoor cinema setup.

Days on the estate offer opportunities for competitors—a professional red-clay tennis court and a private golf sanctuary including a four-hole putting green and a two-hole chipping green, and inside the house, a dedicated billiards room. Water lovers will swim and sun in the stunning pool with underwater speakers and a secluded hot tub. Performers will be drawn to the baby grand piano that anchors the living room, and the whole crew will enjoy the lower-level theatre stage for legendary karaoke nights. After a full day of activities, guests can retreat to a private spa designed for deep restoration, indulging in steam showers and a dedicated massage room (the concierge can arrange for a therapist).

Spanning 12,000 square feet, Seawood can host 14 guests within five elegant bedrooms—including four palatial suites—plus a charming, self-contained pool house with its own kitchenette and bath. With eight bathrooms, multiple kitchens and five acres of privacy, Seawood is ready for a grand celebration.

GREAT AMERICAN SUMMER

The Inn celebrates our nation’s big birthday year with carefree pastimes and special events

From its earliest days at the turn of the 20th century, the pristine beauty of the ocean beach and Quonochontaug Pond’s gentle waters were compelling attractions for a stay at Weekapaug Inn in high season. White sand for children’s castles and sunbathing, great food, and a wide range of summer sports have always been part of the daily fun. Now, 127 years later, the tradition continues.

This year marks a significant anniversary—the 250th birthday of American independence. The Inn’s calendar celebrates this milestone with events that focus on local contributions to national history, woven through a wide-ranging schedule of activities. Pastimes such as gently paced outings on the pond, outdoor dining, and movies under the stars are part of the Inn’s all-American summer plans.

Holidays are occasions for open-air feasts, and Executive Chef Gerardo Viejo, along with his culinary team, prepare a wide variety of summer favorites. The season kicks off on Memorial Day weekend, culminating on Sunday evening (May 24) with a lobster boil and barbecue, along with some glorious sunset views as desserts are served and s’mores are prepared by the firepit.

Independence Day is celebrated here on the evening of July 3, with the Inn’s traditional Stars & Stripes Bash. Festivities begin with canapes and cocktails, followed by a bountiful buffet featuring New England favorites from the farm and sea. As families and friends gather on the lawn for a patriotic sing-along and spectacular fireworks display, guests are surrounded by the panorama of the pond, the ocean and the village beyond—a perfect setting for a momentous national birthday.

July and August at the Inn will also

bring some outdoor supper fare with Pitmaster BBQs on Sunday evenings. Meats are prepared in the Inn’s custom-made smoker, served with classic summer sides. Firepit-toasted s’mores are also on the menu.

Activities on and around the Inn’s coastal waters are some of the property’s most popular attractions. The placid currents of Quonochontaug Pond lend themselves to sailing, kayaking, cruising and paddling the various watercraft available at the pondside Boathouse. A highlight of summer on the water is the moonlight paddle, timed to coincide with each month’s full moon and guided by the Inn’s resident Naturalist Nic Donahue. Participants commemorate the occasion with a Champagne toast. Guests can book excursions under the Blue Moon on May 31, followed by the Strawberry, Buck and Sturgeon moons of June, July and August, to experience the hushed beauty of Quonnie Pond at night and create an unforgettable memory.

Beyond the water and beach activities—an ocean dip, a swim in the Inn’s pool, a wade-in to observe pond wildlife or some hands-on clamming— there is also plenty to do on land. The Inn’s vintage 1967 Land Cruiser stands at the ready to give guests a tour of Weekapaug and its environs, and the Inn Naturalist guides guests on a fleet of E-bikes for tours to nearby Watch Hill and its many attractions. A perusal of the list of other activities, available with a click on the Inn website, offers many more options.

Drive-in movies were a summer thing in generations past, and Weekapaug Inn has perfected an addition to this old favorite: Movies on the Pond. Film fans can join the fun on the Lawn, where

guests enjoy popcorn, cotton candy, wine, beer and more while watching iconic film favorites. This year’s movies include E.T. The Extraterrestrial and The Sand Lot, as well as a lively sing-along to Grease

In this special season, the Inn will also invite guests and community members to the Meeting House—the property’s own freestanding gathering place—for a series of lectures that feature expert speakers about local people, places and history, in addition to natural wonders from over the past two and a half centuries. RSVPrequired, the events are held on Sunday afternoons throughout the America 250 summer; guests enjoy light bites and wine as guest lecturers guide their audiences through each presentation in the season-long series. Among the varied topics are patriots such as Weekapaug’s

own Samuel Ward; Rhode Island artisans who crafted some of America’s most famous furniture, dating from its earliest days; and the history of Weekapaug itself, from its Colonial agricultural era to the current timeframe that encompasses Gilded Age cottages, boldface 21st-century celebrities and the Inn itself.

As his team puts final touches on the summer schedule, General Manager Dan Abrashoff reflects on the Inn’s perfect fit with the nationwide celebrations.

“Weekapaug Inn has an unparalleled location with so many options to enjoy, which has cemented our reputation as a destination since 1899. The American tradition of summer vacations began in the late 19th century, making our historic Inn a perfect place to celebrate the nation’s milestone birthday.”

The capable Inn staff is tuned in to family fun, and the carefree days at Weekapaug lend themselves to children’s learning and discovery. Resident Naturalist Nic Donahue has developed this season’s Camp Weekapaug, a series of daily sessions that enable the Inn’s young guests to build outdoor skills in a fun environment. The program focuses on a particular theme each day. Naturalist Nic was a camper for many summers and a counselor for a few more, developing his love for the great outdoors and its natural wonders. He and his staff will guide campers ages 6 to 13 to safely acquire some outdoor abilities that they will be able to use far into the future. They will learn orienteering, basketry, pioneering (making your own tent or stool from simple materials, using knots and lashing) and discovering nature in the Weekapaug landscape. The camp will run weekly, Monday through Friday, from June 22 until August 28. Sessions start at 10 a.m. and run a bit less than two hours, so children have plenty of time to explore the Inn’s other offerings with their families.

Ocean House Guest Rooms

Debut a Colorful New Look

OCEAN HOUSE Luxurious

The 46 guest rooms at Ocean House have been refreshed for the first time since 2017. The redesign is vibrant, bursting with colors and patterns—and functioning like a breath of fresh (and, perhaps, salty) air.

For this endeavor, Ocean House owner and bestselling author Deborah Goodrich Royce recruited expert designers from the New York–based firm Iliana Moore Interiors, Iliana Moore (founder) and Manon Roux (partner). Moore and Royce share a sense of aesthetics, having already collaborated on more than 10 of Royce’s projects, including Avondale Farm in Avondale, Rhode Island, and the Deer Mountain Inn in Tannersville, New York.

This is a redesign—not a redirection. “We’ve always used chintz fabrics and florals, but I think we doubled down on the brightness and the number of patterns,” explains Royce. “It’s new and brighter, fresher and more exciting, but it’s not going to feel unfamiliar.”

Opposite page: Iliana Moore Interiors created a "bright and homey" feel for the redesign.

top: Each room is distinctive with varied furnishings and original art.

bottom: Bathrooms feature custom vanities with marble surfaces.

The process started at the D&D Building in Manhattan— where the women reviewed racks of samples for hours. Ultimately, three color themes were chosen, each bursting with prints and textures from brands like Osborne & Little. These have been layered around the rooms, from the custom curtains to the bespoke lampshades. Behind the beds, there are pictureframe moldings that feature wallpaper panels.

“Because we’re by the sea and there’s so much light, we wanted to make the rooms colorful to be in harmony with the environment,” shares

It’s new and brighter, fresher and more exciting, but it’s not going to feel unfamiliar.

Moore. “We tried to give them layers so that it feels threedimensional, and you really feel enveloped when you walk into a room.”

Royce echoes: “There are three different schemes.

Top row: The guest rooms are designed with three different schemes and an array of patterns.
bottom row: Furniture is classic with a modern touch.

They kind of all talk to each other, but they’re all distinct—very bright and homey with mismatched pieces of furniture. There are beautiful floral fabrics with smaller patterned fabrics. Think pattern on pattern.”

Ultimately, the aim was to create the sensation of being in someone’s home, with rooms that are individual and intimate. The architecture encourages this, actually: Each room is distinctive, with its own features and lines, like a river-rock fireplace or a terrace. To this end, curator Hilary Pierce worked with Moore and Royce to commission original paintings of Watch Hill scenes for all 46 rooms by local artists, Joanne Sloneker and Annie Wildey. The art on the walls also includes

giclées of the Royces’ collection of Sem caricatures (created by Pierce) and vintage photographs of Watch Hill.

The furnishings lean antique and classic, with carved bamboo and bobbin accents, as well as campaign-style bedside tables and dressers. A bold, lacquered piece or two have been added to the dark woods for a fashionable flourish. Surfaces are punctuated with ceramic lamps.

Ocean House continues to bridge the past and the present—and this refresh is, simply, the most recent example. “I just love old houses and antiques and that’s why Ocean House, for me, is such a thrill,” says Moore. “I think it’s just the best of America. This iconic hotel is very American and fabulous.”

SEAWORTHY Stay

The historic yacht Chanticleer, after an extensive winter restoration, is part of the Ocean House experience this summer.

For a true waterfront adventure, the Chanticleer will be docked in Watch Hill Harbor this summer—just a short walk from Ocean House. Guests can stay on board the newly renovated 108-foot yacht with a captain and stewardess to handle all their needs. The luxury vessel has its own historical character, similar to the resort’s nautical-themed Morgan Suite.

THE HISTORY

In 1973, philanthropist and renowned horseracing enthusiast Ogden Phipps took delivery of a new yacht that he christened after the 1966 Horse of the Year: Buckpasser. This yacht was notable in several ways, including design

and naval architecture by Jack Hargrave, who had made a name for himself in the world of fiberglass sportfishing yachts with the Hatteras Yachts brand. At 98 feet long, Buckpasser was also the largest yacht that the well-respected Burger Boat Company had ever built, and it was the first Burger to leave the shipyard with a helipad.

As with many historic yachts, this one was celebrated with its new owner, but it eventually changed hands several times. In 1986, the singer and actress Frances Langford (who had married Ralph Evinrude, of marine engine fame) bought the yacht and renamed it Chanticleer. She converted the helipad to a dining area and lengthened the vessel to 108

feet by adding a sporting cockpit. The changes suited the two primary ways she went on to use Chanticleer: fishing and entertaining.

“Langford was a huge entertainer. A lot of presidents and celebrities have been on the boat,” says Chanticleer’s project manager, Rob Saunders. “She would fish from sunrise to sunset, and even after sunset, she’d be out there fishing all night.”

After Langford died, Chanticleer passed through additional owners. And now, another admirer of historic American vessels has stepped in to build on Chanticleer’s already notable legacy.

This storied American-built yacht spent the winter undergoing a significant refit under the new owner’s direction—and this summer, for the first time, Chanticleer will become available to Ocean House guests in New England.

MODERN LUXURY

Chanticleer’s next chapter includes being used as a floating space that’s akin to a fourbedroom Ocean House suite or cottage. It will be docked in the heart of Watch Hill Harbor, providing access to resort amenities and personal waterfront views. Guests can also use Chanticleer as private accommodations at the dock without ever firing up the yacht’s engines, or they can cast off for customized charters around the area to see the sights. The twin 435-horsepower Caterpillars allow for a cruising speed of 10 knots and a top speed of 12 knots.

Chanticleer provides Ocean House guests with the true experience of a bygone era, whether the occasion is a family’s summer vacation or a special event such as a wedding. As just one example, Chanticleer could be used for a private rehearsal dinner afloat with family. Or the yacht could serve as the platform for a truly one-of-a-kind engagement cruise ahead of a long-weekend wedding on the main property.

“There’s something special about classic American craftsmanship. Ocean House on land and Chanticleer on the water both capture that spirit,” the new owner says.

YACHT RESTORATION

Chanticleer spent much of this past winter at

INSPIRED INTERIORS

“Kellie Burke is the muscle and design expertise behind the restoration,” explains the new owner. “My intention, with her assistance, was to create a design that reflects Chanticleer’s inheritance: dignified American repose, suspended in nature and time.”

To bring the design into focus, the owner explains her inspiration:

“Materials and decorative elements were selected to honor Burger’s legacy of craftsmanship, durability and performance, while expressing those qualities with weightless radiance. The palette takes its cues from the natural world—romancing luster and endurance through fresh color, artisanal detail and tactile richness— alongside finer fixtures and ornament that preserve the clarity of air, water and salt. In dialogue with the yacht’s original wood tones and varnished finishes, the result is an interior suggestive of buried treasure under a blue sky, harmonizing jewel-like accents drawn from sea and shore.”

Our redesign captures the relaxed American heritage, in the spirit of Burger, with lighter sea tones and rich materials— and maybe even some quiet winks to 1973.
Kellie Burke Interior Designer

Cracker Boy Boat Works in West Palm Beach, Fla., where the yacht underwent extensive restorative work inside and out. The exterior received new paint as well as all-new teak decking, bringing the two most visible elements of the yacht back to perfection.

Designer Kellie Burke worked closely with the owners to bring their vision to life. “Our redesign captures the relaxed American heritage, in the spirit of Burger, with lighter sea tones and rich materials—and maybe even some quiet winks to 1973.”

Inside, the guest staterooms are true to the yacht’s era, but were refreshed with paint and new wallpaper, as is often necessary on classic vessels. An entirely new master bathroom was renovated. The other bathrooms received new tile and stone, also with the intent to refresh the yacht without changing its historic accuracy. Choices of materials were made with great care, to ensure the work was restorative.

“We’re rebuilding this yacht to honor the history and craftmanship,” Saunders says. “The Chanticleer just has that feel to it. Some of the retro-mods are interesting, but they’re not real. You hop on this boat, and it’s 100 percent authentic. You can look around and see things, like some of the showers are a little shorter. It’s from back when they were built as boats, not as megayachts.”

A few invisible modern systems were included in this winter’s yard work, such as new ducting with an ultraviolet-light system for air purification—a frequently requested system on charter yachts ever since the pandemic. Rewiring was also done on the yacht, along with the installation of new Furuno and TimeZero navigation equipment at the helm.

Underwater lighting was added too, as well as era-correct cushions for the exterior lounge spaces where guests can relax with a wide view of the surroundings.

NEXT CHAPTER

Similar to the meticulous renovation of Ocean House, Chanticleer was preserved in an authentic way to capture the correct era while infusing modern touches for discerning guests.

“Pretty much everything you see, touch or feel outside is new,” Saunders explains. “All the chrome was sent out, all the 1973 originalbuild components; those are being chromed as original. It is an elegant floating suite that reflects the Ocean House luxury.”

Bespoke Delight

With two different approaches to their weddings, these couples enjoyed the customized weekend of their dreams

Some brides have general ideas about their dream wedding. Maybe it’s a handful of photos, a few color swatches, a favorite flower. From there, the planning team makes suggestions, bringing the overall concept to life.

Danielle is that kind of bride. “We didn’t have a super-specific vision,” she says. “We were very focused on how people would feel. We wanted everyone to have a great time and feel like they’d had a getaway. But when it came down to the specifics, the vendors were really helpful in

coming up with a vision.”

Other brides begin the planning process with a level of specificity that rivals a NASA shuttle launch. They want to help orchestrate every last detail to perfection.

Tori Krause is that type of bride. “I was crazy about the timeline,” she says. “At the ceremony, we handed out Greyhound cocktails. It’s vodka and fresh grapefruit juice. They were offered as guests were seated, and while they were waiting for me to walk down the aisle. I didn’t want people to be thirsty.”

Both women say their visions came to beautiful life thanks to the in-house teams and vendors who work with Ocean House and Weekapaug Inn.

“We really pushed them to do some fun stuff, and they were all about it,” Tori says. “Nathan and Lauren from the catering team were incredible. So were my planners. I’m sure everybody says this, but our guests said they had so much fun; it was the best wedding ever. I would relive it again if I could. I don’t think it could be any better. It was just so perfect.”

Left: Frank and Tori relied on the Ocean House team and an event planner to bring their wedding vision to life. Right: For their Weekapaug Inn wedding, Eli and Danielle wanted guests to enjoy a weekend getaway.

Tori and Frank dated throughout high school in New Jersey. They’ve been together since 2012. For Christmas 2023, they traveled from their shared home in Jersey City down to Miami to visit her parents.

“Frank flew his family down. I didn’t know,” Tori says. “I was told we were going to my mom’s friend’s house for a party, a networking event for Frank, but that wasn’t true. It was all for the proposal. Everybody surprised us, and then we did a boat ride around Miami and celebrated with friends.”

Tori, who is a marketing director, and Frank, who works in real estate private equity, then went looking at venues. Tori knew she wanted the wedding to be a weekend-long event, but she was open to all kinds of possibilities.

“We looked in South Carolina at Palmetto Bluff, but my parents and sister had all been

Below: Tori and Frank added unique touches, from a St. Barth's beach vibe to a birthday celebration for the groom.

to Ocean House,” she recalls. “They said it was the most beautiful place ever. We went there in March 2024, and we signed the contract that weekend.”

The festivities began on Thursday night with a private family dinner at Weekapaug Inn. Friday was a beach party at Ocean House, with a tequila bar stocked to the hilt, she says, because “My mom and Frank are tequila aficionados.”

“We called it Club Colantuono,” she says. “The theme was the Eden Rock in St. Barths. We modeled the logo and colors after that, because we love that vibe. We didn’t want it to be so formal, because Saturday was going to be black tie with a DJ and lighting.”

Saturday included the ceremony, a cocktail hour and a tent reception—but no traditional cake. Instead, the staff offered mini desserts on the dance floor.

“We had mini strawberry shortcakes, chocolate-covered pretzels, and they passed them around like hors d’oeuvres,” she says. “I didn’t want people to stop and sit down.”

The couple topped off the night with a unique afterparty in the ballroom. “There was a sound ordinance that starts at 11 o’clock,” she says. “So we had one hour with the DJ, and then the DJ handed out headphones, and we had a ‘silent disco.’ There were two live DJs, and you could change the channel on the headphones, red or green. One station was rap, and the other was pop. You could see what color people’s headphones were and what they were listening to, so you could dance.”

And then, in the end, out came a cake.

“It was Frank’s birthday after midnight,” she says. “He turned 29. He blew out the candles, and then we all went back to dancing.”

Adating app matched Eli and Danielle long before they began dating. They talked a bit when they were both living in Boston, but never went out. “A few years later, we matched again on a dating app, and Eli loves to tell the story that I sent him a rose,” Danielle says.

“I was ecstatic,” he recalls. “I was hoping she didn’t remember I ghosted her when life had gotten a little crazy. I admitted it immediately, and said I was so sorry, and I asked if she would forgive me. She had no recollection of it.”

They were engaged in November 2024 in the Berkshires of Massachusetts. While they were at dinner, the inn’s staff filled their room with flowers and candles. “When we came back, she was shocked,” Eli says. “She thought we were going to watch the Golden Bachelorette and go to bed. But there was a whole setup, and I got down on one knee and everything.”

Danielle’s godmother, Sue, had a beach house 10 minutes from Weekapaug Inn, and Danielle spent every summer visiting. “What was also

cool is that Eli’s mom, as a kid, used to go to the beach in the same neck of the woods,” she says. “And I used to go to Ocean House all the time. I actually didn’t know much about Weekapaug Inn. When we went there, we thought it was perfect. It felt intimate, but still luxurious.”

Their wedding weekend began Thursday, with dinner for their families at Danielle’s godmother’s house. Friday night was their rehearsal dinner at Weekapaug Inn’s Meeting House, followed by a welcome reception on the lawn. Saturday was the big day, with cocktail hour and a tented reception. The afterparty was held in the Sea Room. Everything was scheduled so their guests could enjoy the property, along with the festivities.

“I told my friends they could come see me on the wedding day, but I wanted to make sure they also went to the pool, for a bike ride or whatever else they wanted to do,” Danielle says. “It was all about the feel.”

To document all the important moments,

the couple turned to Jackie Fox Photography. “Jackie knew all the right angles to capture everything perfectly,” Eli says. “Having a photographer who’s supportive is so helpful. She had shot Weekapaug many times before, so she knew all the great spots.”

Yumiko Fletcher of Hana Floral Design was also an immense help, Danielle adds. “I can tell when I like something or not, but I wasn’t sure what I wanted. So I gave her some Pinterest pictures of hydrangeas as the key flower,” Danielle explains. “She added a purple flower and made it very natural, combining the Inn’s understated ambience with an upscale twist.” They also appreciated the guidance from Nathan Venne, who serves as the resort’s Director of Catering and Events. “He was our point person the whole weekend,” Eli says, “and the Weekapaug staff was so helpful. One of my cousins forgot his cufflinks, and the general manager offered his own. That’s the kind of hospitality. They go above and beyond.”

he production schedule for Tori and Frank’s wedding was 19 pages long, with high-level curation of everything—including the Friday night welcome party with a St. Barth’s vibe.

“We outfitted the Dune Cottage into an Eden Rock theme with really custom décor and music,” Simeral says. “We had magnums of Champagne with sparklers coming out of them. We bought seagrass rugs and put them on the beach to add more square footage for lounge furniture, so people didn’t have to step on the sand. We had custom acrylic wine glasses printed with her artwork for

the night. Custom surfboards were created. We had a DJ booth made. The music was very high-end with a beach-club vibe.”

Having a detailed production schedule is a necessity to create this type of experience, Simeral says. She and her team—which included five people at Ocean House all weekend—start building the production schedule on the first day they speak with a couple. They capture every detail the couple wants, down to the garnishes for every drink, and then work from the schedule to keep everything on plan.

“It’s really something we want the clients to be involved with and approve,” Simeral says. “We want it to be their dream weekend.”

Working in collaboration with the Ocean House team is also key, she adds. “We’re all working as one army to create the client’s vision,” she says. “The Ocean House catering team and their banquet managers, when we’re all together, yes, we’re going to exceed your expectations every single time. It’s white-glove service. It’s caring, thoughtful, gracious and one-of-a-kind.”

At the last minute before her wedding, Danielle saw a photo from a bride that Fletcher had worked with in 2023. It was a hydrangea bar, with flowers draped as a centerpiece sculpture during the cocktail hour. It had never been done at Weekapaug Inn, which made Danielle want it even more.

hydrangeas, we used clematis as an accent. It is subtle, using another soft hue so it’s not so much blue.”

The blue hydrangeas she prefers to use are the Dutch variety. “They’re bigger; they’re stronger; they’re not going to wilt as fast as the South American hydrangea,” she says. “And local hydrangeas are great, but you can only find local blue in July, so you have to get them from other markets.”

“A lot of brides just love that lush hydrangea moment,” Fletcher says. “We call it hydrangea clouds. It’s actually pretty easy to do, but it takes a lot of flowers, which adds to the costs. Then it’s just a question of deciding if we add other flowers to it.”

For this wedding, Fletcher’s team added a smidge of lavender to the blue hydrangeas. “The coastal aesthetic makes sense at Weekapaug Inn,” she says. “To bring in another tone to the

In the end, the result is a major flower statement where not just the wedding party, but also the guests can take memorable photos for social media. “The big flower moment has become increasingly popular over the years,” she says. “The days of putting down centerpieces and some votives, that’s over.”

Explore tips from our team who make the wedding bells ring by KIM

When couples choose Ocean House and Weekapaug Inn for their “Big Day,” they turn to two of our most knowledgeable wedding experts: Nathan Venne, Director of Catering and Membership, and Tanya Brenton, Catering and Sales Manager. Since 2024, they have worked with countless couples to offer unparalleled support, handling every last detail. Here, they share insider knowledge about making each wedding spectacular.

What is your favorite aspect of bringing a wedding vision to life?

NATHAN: Witnessing their individuality unfold in the most meaningful ways. It’s a privilege to translate their personalities, stories and style into an unforgettable celebration. From the carefully chosen linens and thoughtfully designed florals to the entertainment that keeps their guests dancing and the specialty cocktails that reflect their favorite flavors or shared memories, every personalized touch becomes a reflection of who they are. No two weddings are ever the same, and that’s what makes this work so inspiring.

Why is Weekapaug Inn a romantic wedding spot?

TANYA: It is surrounded by nature and exudes an intimate, cozy feeling. Calm waters, quiet surroundings and wood-burning fireplaces add to Weekapaug’s magic.

How much time do you need to plan a wedding?

NATHAN: Each wedding is different. We work with some couples for almost two years, speaking often and planning, while other couples come to us three months prior and we make it happen.

What important details do you add to enhance a small, medium or large celebration?

TANYA: No matter the size, we love to keep everything

top-notch, while putting a focus on what is important to the couple. For example, if they love dining, we can add an extra course to dinner. If they love music, we may incorporate live musicians in creative ways. If aesthetics are important, we create a showstopping tablescape.

Any tips for adding personal touches?

TANYA: I always recommend adding details that feel true to the couple and not forced. When the details feel authentic, guests naturally connect to the celebration, making the day unforgettable. Something as simple as a signature cocktail named after a beloved pet, a latenight snack inspired by a

favorite date-night food, or handwritten notes to guests can create moments that feel intimate and meaningful.

Do you recommend special menus?

NATHAN: Our wedding menus are a great place to start; however, most couples customize their menus. We love including favorites from childhood or important milestones as a couple.

What are the advantages of renting the entire Inn for wedding weekends?

TANYA: Renting out the entire Inn for your wedding weekend creates the perfect home base for your friends and family. A full buyout enables your VIP guests to stay on property together. It allows for privacy and flexibility throughout our event spaces. The Weekapaug team is amazing and has experience in creating custom weekends of family fun, including water activities, crafts for kids and more.

Are you seeing any new wedding trends?

NATHAN: Weddings are becoming full weekends designed around connection and experience. Couples are planning thoughtfully curated, multiday gatherings to spend meaningful time with guests. It often begins with an intimate family dinner on

Thursday—something relaxed and intentional to ground the weekend. On Friday, couples often plan daytime activities: morning yoga on the lawn, a round of golf, sailing excursions, wine tastings or beach gatherings. These shared experiences create natural moments for guests to connect before the main event. Friday evening flows into a rehearsal dinner and welcome party, often with its own distinct vibe. Sometimes it’s elevated and elegant, other times it’s playful or themed, but always personal.

Saturday is the wedding celebration itself, the culmination of the weekend’s energy and anticipation. And we love that it doesn’t just end there. A send-off brunch on Sunday gives everyone one last chance to gather, relive the highlights and say goodbye in a relaxed, joyful way.

The overall trend we’re really seeing is a move toward immersive wedding weekends where the focus is on presence, shared memories and creating an experience that feels like a true reflection of the couple from start to finish. It is not just about one moment anymore. It’s about the entire story.
