Jon Rice of Sharonville won the Bulldog Award, the Crusader Award and the Most Valuable Wrestler award. Rice went 29-6 this past year and became only the lOth Moeller wrestler to qualify for the state tournament. Rice finishes his high school wrestling career holding the school record for the most takedowns in a season and in a career, as well as four other school records. Ken Darby, of West Chester, won the most improved wrestl,er award. In basketball, West Chester resident Scott Remmy was selected as the most improved player and Matt Messersmith, also of West Chester, earned the team's best field goal percentage, at 52 oercent.

State title capped Laflin's big year BY KEN ROBINSON Enquirer Cor.tributor

jason Laflin, Fairfield's 112-pound wrestler and the area's only state champion this season, is The Enquirer's Wrestler of the Year. Princeton coach Dan Moody, who led the Vikings to the city poll championship and sixth place in the state meet, is Coach of the Year. A four-time state qualifier, Laflin competed in three weight classes this season, compiling a 30-3 record. His prep highlights also include four conference, four sectional and four district titles. Laflin, with a career mark of 126-15, avenged a disappointing third-place finish in last year's tournament by dominating the 112-pound field. He captured the title with an overwhelming perJason Laflin formance (18-3 technical fall) over 1988 runner-up Chris Russo of Amherst Steele. An official's late reversal of a ruling resulted in Laflin's semifinal loss to eventual winner Tom Manning in 1988. "I scored a takedown (late in regulation) and was sent to the chair before overtime. When I came back out, the referee said M d there wasn't a takedown after 0 Dan Y all," Laflin recalled. In his final attempt to win a state title, Laflin was determined not to allow any intervention on the part of an official. "I tried not to let any match get close," remarked Laflin, who was also a surprise second at state as a 105-pound sophomore. "In the past, jason felt he could win state. This year, he knew he'd win it. It was a difference in attitude," Fairfield coach Ron Masanek added. In addition to his personal accomplishments, Laflin exemplified the team aspect of the sport. Earlier in the season, Laflin competed in both the 119 and 125 classes and suffered several losses despite plans to wrestle at 112 in postseason competition. "A lot of kids are afraid to wrestle at other weights -they want to protect their records. jason's always· been a team man," Masanek said. Laflin is considering an impressive list of colleges. Top choices include Penn State, Ohio State, Purdue, Pittsburgh and Kent State. Moody led Princeton to the Greater Miami Conference championship. Voted Cincinnati's top team in the final Enquirer Coaches Poll, Princeton went on to place second in both the Division I Cincinnati Sectional and Dayton District tournaments. The Vikings, on the strength of four qualifiers, finished higher than any other local team at state, only a half point out of fifth. "We and the rest of Cincinnati are thinking not only of going to state but winning it," said M6ody, 30-22 in six seasons at Princeton. Moody gave credit to his four state qualifiers: Ken Powell (125), who was second in Columbus; Charles Gray (119), who came in third; and Mike McGowan (189) and Quincy North (103).

Sports Moeller's Rice must grapple against unfamiliarity By John Tymoski Post contributor

Moeller senior John Rice will have a problem and an advantage when he wrestles in the District Tournament at Dayton's Hara Arena this weekend he'll be wrestling against new faces. Rice, the winner of the 140·pound class at the Division I Sectionals last weekend at St. Xavier, is still unde· feated at 140 although he is 26·4 overall. Rice's four defeats are all to state qualifiers - two to last year's thirdplace finisher Josh Robbins of St. Xavier, one to Maurice Vilaboy of St. Xavier and one to Vic Voinivich of Lake Catholic in northeastern Ohio. None of these opponents are wrestling at 140 for the state tournaments. That means Rice

will be seeing plenty of new faces if everything goes well for him. "John has a really good chance at the state because he's stronger than anyone he will wrestle - that, and he's extremely quick," said Moeller assistant coach Joe Hunt. "The only thing that could keep him from winning the whole thing is that he hasn't wrestled as much as some of the others." "Things look pretty good," Rice said cautiously. "But I don't know many other people at 140 other than (three-time state champion) Allen Freed (of Lakewood St. Edwards)." Although Rice conceded that his lack of familiarity with possible opponents could haunt him, he's eager to meet the challenge.

"It really makes it a lot easier when I know the person I'm wrestling," he said. "If I don't, I just prepare for everybody the same way and try not to take anyone lightly." It is doubtful that Rice will be taking anyone lightly, especially after being defeated just one match short of qualifying for the state championships last year. Since then, Rice has concentrated intently on wrestling, foregoing his fourth year of football at the school and working on his wrestling technique all summer. "I wrestled about 50 matches this summer - about 30 with Team Cincinnati and about 20 on my own," he said. "I was lucky enough to have a job this summer allowed me to practice and let

me off on weekends to go to tournaments." "John has done a good job for us this year. There's been a lot of pressure on him to lead and he's done real well," said Moeller head coach Jeff Gaier. With typical ease, Rice shifts credit to his teammates and coaches. "Sometimes when there is only one senior on the team, it's hard to be any kind of leader, but on the other hand, everyone on this team has made it easier because they looked up to me for support and I just tried my best," he said. "I've seen it carry on to them now, because we started out this year with a very inexperienced team and have improved greatly over the year."
