Contrary to what some may think Moeller's sports program does~'t go into hibernation after the football helmets are stacked away to collect dust. Ask Ed An·· derson, Paul Franer, or Ralph Moher and one will discover that life at Moeller simply beats to a ;· different drummer--In this c~se to ~ that of an All-American swimmer. In a sport that St. Xavier has overpowered foes for a decade, the Crusaders have deservingly taken an honored notch among the schools with the refined talents of these three men. The trio of seniors, ever since a trek to the State Meet their freshman year, have literally rewritten the record books at Moe. These three, who represent three-fourths of the defending state 200 medley relay team, have come ·a long way since being Impressionable freshman, but as all will testify, It was not a cakewalk. Ed Anderson, perhaps the most talented swimmer Moeller' has ever produced, practices up to three hours per day at the Fairfield YMCA. 'h'1pes to post a state victory In that event this year. After graduation, Ed plans to continue swimming in a college "somewhere in the south," and with his multitude of talents, a scholarship seems Inevitable. Because Moeller's pool time Is limited, Ralph Moher clocks his five to six hours per day at the ' Blue Ash YMCA, only practicing with this Crusader teammates on · a consistent basis near the season's end .. But Ralph is quick to point out that sheer aquatic ability is not enough to gua~entee success because the sw1mmer must also possess a mental prowess and be able to concentrate during the meets. Moher, who· swims butterfly on the the All American 200 medley relay, has an eye for Miami University (Oxford) after graduation. Since he was six years old, Paul Franer has been in or near the water. During the summer, he's a lifeguard at a swim club and when Paul is not busy saving lives he enjoys listening to some good old rock and roll. Besides playing a vital role ~>n _the Crusader team, Paul also sw1ms for the Reading Aquatic Club. College is definitely in the picture for Paul, with the Universities of Cincinnati and Dayton being the likely contenders. Fourth year head coach Dick Beerman confidently states that his senior athletes are the finest group of swimmers Moe has ever had. Ed, Ralph, and Paul, despite being outstanding swimmers, are very team oriented and provide the team with leadership. Even though swimming can become tedious and repetitious, the squad is able to maintain their In· tensity without going overboard. Moher explains, "We keep things in perspective but stili have fun." Indeed, through lhe abilities of Anderson, Frander, and Moher, the 1981-82 Crusader Aquamen will have fun all the way to the State Meet in Canton.

In a tight game that saw l'un·pJI lead only once, tlw kt•y came late in the fourth period when the Crusaders connected successfully from the charity line. With the score 45-4:{ and the ticker under 20 seconds, Moe's Steve Apke and Steve Spatz each calmly hit their l-and-1's to give Moe the six-point margin that Purcell failed to overcome. Center Tim .Jolley led Moe's offensive attack with 14 points., Greg Fritz hit for 11, while Apke and Spatz each had 6 .

Most of the top high school swimming teams will be in action this weekend at the Sycamore Invitational for girls and the Mariemont Invitational for boys. At Sycamore tonight, teams included in the field are Indian Hill, Turpin, Anderson, Mariemont, Oak Hills, Ursuline and host Sycamore. Diving will begin at 4 with swimming at 6. Saturday afternoon at Mariemont, the teams entered include Indian Hill, ·Turpin, Anderson,.
Sycamore, Elder, Princeton, Moeller, Oak Hills and host Mariemont. The meet will begin at noon wlth dlvlng and swtmmlngat2. In other swimming action, St. Xavier will spend the weekend in Kentucky and Tennessee as the Aqua-Bombers travel to Lexington today to face Louisvllle St. Xavier and to Knoxvllle on Saturday to battle HuntsvUle, Ala. and Baylor School of Tennessee.

Steve Grazulis will be there to introduce the team and comment on the 1982 season. This is a chance to meet our sons' teammates and coaches and show our support for a great effort.

The financial success of our athletic teams depends on the support of our advertising in the football program. Even if you were not contacted, please feel free to attend. B. Please support the Parents Club (Mom's & Dad's Club) Dance on March 27th, Saturday night. C. The Fifth Annual Moeller Alumni Association Stag will be Friday, April 16th in the Moeller Gym. Dan Ledford - Speakers to be announced. AWARDS NIGHT A. Wrestling- Wednesday, March 17, 1982- Time: 7:30- Moeller Cafeteria- Awards will be given to Freshman, Reserve and Varsity. Plan to come and show your appreciation to these fine athletes. B. Swimming and Basketball- Thursday, March 18, 1982- Time: 7:30pm- Moeller Cafeteria- Our teams have had good seasons and deserve your applause. CURRENT EVENTS A. Swimming - As we head into the state championship sequence, the Crusaders find themselves with a final regular season record of 12-3 with the losses coming at the hands of #1 St. Xavier, #2 Worthington and #6 Sycamore. The Crusaders are ranked #8 in the state. The GCL meet found Moeller's 200yd. medley relay setting a new league record and Ed Anderson posting new marks in the 50 Fr. and 100 Fr. The team finished with 267 points - good enough for a fine second place finish. The State Honor Roll includes Moeller in the 200 medrelay - 1st; 400 free relay - 8th; Ed Anderson - 2nd in 50 Fr and 3rd in 100 Fr and 100 Br; Paul Franer - 9th in 50 Fr, 5th in 100 BK; and Scott Barlow - 8th in 200 IM, 12th in 100 BK. B. Wrestling - The Varsi¡ty has .competed in the Milford Invitational and the GCL since the last letter. At Milford the team finished 4th out of 9 with Matt Macke and Dusty Stoy making the finals. In the GCL the team finished a disappointing 6th with Joe Hossenlopp (98 lbs.), Mike Melink (119 lbs.) and Dusty Stoy (Hwt), making the finals. On Thursday, Feb. 25th (5:00- 11:00) the Cincinnati Sectionals begin. A week later we travel to Dayton to compete in the Southwest District. Thanks to the parents of all our wrestlers for their help and cooperation. The Reserve have wrestled in two invitationals, one being the Purcell Reserve which Moeller placed 5th. Individually: Greg Swain- 1st in 119; Rich Ciseneros- 2nd in Hwt.; Sean Wallace and Joe Ashbrock 3rd; Steve Medl and Ken Morrison 4th. The other meet was a Varsity Invitational in Columbus in which the reserves did well considering the competition. Brian Hunter took a 1st, Rich Ciseneros 2nd and Joe Ashbrock 4th. The Freshmen lost to Bridgetown and then finished the season by placing 5th in the Bridgetown Tournament (ahead of Sycamore, St. X., and Fairfield). The Freshmen's final record stands as 2-3-1. C. Basketball - The Varsity, although struggling with a 8-11 record,is playing aggressive, hard working basketball. Statistically Greg Fritz is the leading scorer at 14 ppg. Tim Jolley leads in rebounding with 10 ppg. Bob Hill has the lead in field goal percentage with 53%, while Steve Apke leads at the free throw line with 75%. The Reserves record stands at an impressive 16-3 and a GCL Championship to go along with that. Byron Larkin leads the team with a 21.6 avg. Ron Ober is the top rebounder and Rick Ebel the top assist man. Also playing well are Chris Blomer, Jerry Ellis and Greg Heile. The Freshmen finished the regular season at 1Q-4. They have beaten both LaSalle and Roger Bacon in the GCL Tourney at the printing of this issue. D. Track- The Crusader Track Team is looking forward to another successful campaign in '82. The season opens March 26th at the Sycamore Golden Baton Relays for the Varsity and March 27th at home against LaSalle for the Sophomores and Freshmen. GENERAL A. Interest has been expressed by a number of people in obtaining the ICE BUCKET AWARD given at the football banquet this year. AGENDA A. Introductionof Tennis and Baseball Teams. The teams will have already started their respective seasons so the coaching staff will have plenty to say. B. Coach Steve Klonne will be on hand to update everyone on the progress of the Football Team. CURRENT EVENTS A. BASEBALL - The Baseball Teams are in full swing with the biggest emphasis at this time placed on cutting the rosters down to playing size. Fr. Tom Kriedler and Mike Sussli had 68 candidates for their Freshman Team. ·Tony Hollow and Fr. Dave Zaller had 43 come out for the Sophomore Team and Varsity Coaches Mike Cameron and Paul Smith had 33 hopefuls trying out. All three opened their seasons on Friday, March 26th. Moeller's Homefield is Malsbary - off of Kenwood Road in Blue Ash. B. TENNIS - The Varsity and Reserve Tennis Teams are getting ready for their first matches. They are working hard and are ready to give full effort for the G.C.L. Players to look for include: Joe Bruening, Jim O'Leary, Rich Lonneman, Al Litwin and Freshman Brad McCurdy. C. PAST EVENTS A. The Basketball Team has just finished it's most successful season ever in a heartbreaking 1 pt. loss to Roger Bacon in the Regional finals. The team was led in tournament play by Soph Guard Byron Larkin-25 ppg; Sr. Center Tim Jolley-10 plus rebounds/game and Sr. Guard Greg Fritz-16 ppg. The result of the final game could have been different if Tim Jolley wouldn't have been wearing a cast for torn ligaments in his ankle suffered in the Hamilton game. A big Thank You to Coach Hammer and his team for their inspired play that gave us many great moments this past month. Frosh: 12-5 GCL runner-up Reserve: 17-3 Champs - a great season for both teams. WhEm the state high school swimming championship meet ended several weeks ago, varying emotions consumed at least two Cincinnatians. One was elated; the other disappointed Now; as they look back over the season, both rell.lize just what they accomplished. They gave their all for their teams and for themselves. In return, both gained some things that wm stay with them a longtime. Because he broke two national records and two state records at . the state championship, Mook . 'Rbodenbaugh of Oak H1lls has :~en selected The Enquirer boys , :Swimmer of the Year for the sec:,..Qp.d year. And because of his per·')eYerance and faith In his swimmers, St. Xavier's Tim Blood Is The Enquirer coach of the Year. Blood was a downcast figure after the state meet. His Aquabombers had lost to Akron Firestone, ending a 12-year reign. "But I realized that I didn't really lose and the kids didn't lose. We all came out real winners from our experience this year," Blood said. The Aquabombers progressed from being considered a long shot as a state competitor-since most of last year's star swimmers had graduated- to finishing second In the state. trends. We were all pulling together," he said. "As a coach, you have to capitalize on the Individual talents while at the same time keeping in mind the team's common goal." For the Aquabombers, that was to go to state. Rhodenbaugh's successes this season are obvious. He set national and state records In the 200yard Individual medley with a time of 1:48.97 and in the 100-yard backstroke with a 49.76. · · Although setting those records took tremendous energy, Rhodenbaugh couldn't stop. He competed In the regionals with the Cincinnati Marlins last weekend and w1ll .swim· in the nationals In Florida this weekend. "It's hard to describe the feeling of setting a national record," Rhodenbaugh explained. "I just hope the records stay around longer than my record last year did. Sure, people knew the Oak H1lls girls' swim team had some strong individual swimmers, such as soph-omore Kim Rhodenbaugh. But, as a team, Oak Hills was the dark horse going In to the state high school swhnming championship. Win the state? Nah. Lo and behold, Oak Hills moved from 15th place last year to tie for first In the state with North Canton Glen Oaks this year. And, in honor of Its accompUshments throughout the year, Rhodenbaugh landed The Enquirer high school girls Swimmer of thi! Year award and her coach, Beth Richmond, earned the Coach of the Year award. Rhodenbaugh set a state and national record in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:02.5 and finished first in the state in the 200-yard individual medley. The happiness expressed on her face after the state meet could not be put into words. "I did It for the team because we really wanted to win state. And I did it for my well-being," she said. Then, after the meet and a brief break, she was up and at it again, swimming with the Cincinnati Pepsi Marlins In regional and, this weekend, In national competition. HER UNENDING enthusiasm ~-

for swimming doesn't stop there. Rhodenbaugh said she can't wait un t1l the swimming season starts all over again next year. "Well, when we went to state, I didn't think the team would win. I was really excited about that. Next year we'll be even better," she bubbled. "Kim's sure to be a top contender in the 1984-0lympics," said Oak Hills boys coach Yoshi Oyakawa, an Olympic gold medal winner himself. "She's close to making the Olympic team now." Richmond agreed that Rhodenbaugh w1ll go a long way. "Without a doubt, Kim was the key to our win. She's a nationallyranked swimmer. "It was the best season I'd ever had, not only because of how It turned out, but al5o because of the great group of girls I worked with." The next few years at Oak Hills look particularly bright to her. "We have seven strong sophomores. During the next two years, we're going to be tough," she said.

Junior Matt Foley churned out three personal best times including a school record. in the 200 Free and a :49.4 split on the first-place 400 Free Relay (Foley, Ralph Moher, Greg Dyson, Dave Bidwell). In the 200 IM, Scott Barlow set a school record and turned in a personal best in the 100 Back. Also swimming individual fastest times were Jeff Siekman (200 IM, 100 Breast) and Greg Dyson (200 Free). Additionally, the Crusader men of the high boards, Jim Judd, Steve Eddingfield, and Steve Vollmecke, grabbed 1-3 in the diving segment. Last, but not least, underclassmen Steve Stiles and Larry Dolan stroked at the top of their forms in the Butterfly: On Saturday, the Crusaders will match wits in an important quadrangular meet featuring St. Xavier, Sycamore, and Roger Bacon. Perhaps _the biggest difference c;ame at the charity stripe where St. X hit 19-38, while Moe only connected on a disproportionate 4-6. _· Except for that free throw statistic, Moeller played evenly with St. X. Each team pulled down 31 rebounds, and the individual scoring was .;:similar. Rob Heintzman ':led Moe with 11 points, ~·:with Greg Fritz knocking ;-:in 6. deficit and when the final period rolled around, Findlay led by a mere one point. From this time on, the .game was nip and tuck. With five seconds showing on the clock, senior point guard Greg Fritz lofted a 30-footer up and in to lift Moe to a 54-53 final score and the Crusaders' eighth victory. Center Tim ·Jolley paced the team overall, scoring ten points and grabbing a game high 14 rebounds. Bob Hill followed closely, pulling down 7 rebounds and 16 points. Moe outperformed the Trojans convincingly off the boards as they notched 30 to Findlay's 17. The Crusaders hosted McNicholas Feb. 9 and will play LaSalle on Feb. 12 and then Elder the following Monday. Moeller's swim team has nearly concluded its regular season with the last meet being at Sycamore on Friday Feb. 12. Over the past week, the Crusaders competed in two dual meets-one against Walnut Hills and the other against the state's .#1-rank'ed team, Worthington. In each contest, Moe reviewed the overall performances during the year and mixed and matched swimmers to

decide · which ones will give the Crusaders optimum scoring potential in the upcoming G.C.L. championships and sectional competitions. After the downing of Walnut Hills 94-74, in which Scott Barlow lowered his school record in the 100 Butterfly, the Crusaders fell to mighty Worthington 101-66. On Monday, the Moeller men .of the high boards took part in the G.C.L. diving championships at Sycamore. While accumulating 23 points for Moe, Steve Vollmecke, Steve Eddingfield, and Jim Judd finished fourth, seventh, and eighth, respectively. The swimming portion of the championships was held Wednesday Feb. 10, and at press time it looks as if St. Xavier's depth will once again prove to be a major factor in scoring. The Crusader matmen posted a fourth place finish in the Milford Invitational tournament held last weekend. Dusty Stoy was the lone winner for Moe, but others who placed high were Matt Macke, Rob Nozema, Mike Melink, Joe Hossenlopp, Frank Anastasia, and Mike Seeger.

Most of the top high school swimming teams will be in action this weekend at the Sycamore Invitational for girls and the Mariemont Invitational for boys. At Sycamore tonight, teams included in the field are Indian Hill, Turpin, Anderson, Mariemont, Oak Hills, Ursuline and host Sycamore. Diving will begin at 4 with swimming at 6. Saturday afternoon at Mariemont, the teams entered include Indian Hill, ·Turpin, Anderson,
Sycamore, Elder, Princeton, Moeller, Oak Hills and host Mariemont. The meet will begin at noon with diving and swimmingat2. In other swimming action, St. Xavier will spend the weekend in Kentucky and Tennessee as the Aqua-Bombers travel to Lexington today to face Louisville St. Xavier and to Knoxville on Saturday to battle Huntsville, Ala. and Baylor School of Tennessee.

.Glen Oak relay splashes to state title By BETH SHE BOY The GlenOak High girls 20().yard medley relay team won a state title Friday in the first day of the boys and girls state high school swim-. ming meet as three Ohio records and one national mark were set in C.T. Branin Natatorium. Senior Lisa Jandura, sophomores Carole Lyon and Kim Hanson and freshman Bobbi Jo Brannick captured a state crown for the Golden Eagles Friday with a blistering 1:51.75. The GlenOak quartet, champions at the district meet last week, qualified second in the morning preliminaries with a 1:53.7 It had been four years since anyone from Stark County won a title in the state swim meet. GlenOak's Kim Hillen won the 200 and 500 freestyles in 1977-78 when the GlenOak girls placed second. Also that year, Randy Chambers of North Canton won the diving event. Hanson, who had the second-best qualifying time in Friday's 50 freestyle prelims, finished second in that event in 24.01 behind Ashtabula St. John's Beth Wasbut, a junior who bad a 23.80 after setting the state
record of 23.74 in the preliminary race. The previous state record in tli.e girls 50 free was 23.97 set in 1978 by
Barbara Major of Lakewood. "They just swam well," said Glen¡ Oak coach Mark Pruiss. "I figured it would take a 1:52 to win it. Kim had
a good race in the 50. Going into the wall there was a lot of wave. She had more clear water in the relay," Pruiss said referring to Hanson's

Each school naturally cheers for their own swimmers, but all of the swimmers and spectators gave Mark Rhodenbaugh of Cincinnati Oak Hills two standing ovations for his national mark of 1:48.97 in the 200 individual medley. Rhodenbaugh's nickname "Mook" -.echoed through the pool after his outstanding feat. In the morning preliminaries he bested his own state record of 1:52.09, set last year as a junior, with a 1:50.05. The national mark had been 1:49.39, set in 1980 by Christopher Cavanaugh of San Jose (Cal.) Lynbrook High. "It felt pretty good. I thought I had a shot at getting it (the national mark)," Rhodenbaugh said. "I felt good this morning and I really wanted to lower that record," said Rhodenbaugh, a highly recruited swimmer who is considering Southern Methodist and Alabama among his many choices. Rhodenbaugh's sister, Kim, a sophomore who also swims for Oak Hills, won the girls individual medley event in 2:05.36. The record in that race is 2:04.29 set in 1979 by Kim Carlisle of Cincinnati Finneytown. The third state record set was by John Sauerland of Shaker Heights, who was visibly dissappointed with his 20.62 in the 50 freestyle after one false start in the race. Sauerland topped his own morning mark of 20.66 in the finals, and his prelim time bested his 20.90, set last year as a junior.

Rhodenbaugh delighted the packed house with a time of 49.76 in the finals, shortly after which his sister clocked a 1:02.49 in the breaststroke topping a national till'lt! of 1:02.9 by Kathy Smith of Bellvue, Washington. Kim's time of 1:03.10 in tbe prelims bad been thought to be a national record since the state meet book did not list Smith's time. ·•Kathy is a friend of mine and she called me recently and told me she'd done a 1:02.9 so I wanted to beat it," the pretty Oak Hills sophomore said. "Yes, I'm proud of Mark. He de. serves it. GlenOak girls tie for first By BETH SHEBOY The GlenOak Golden Eagle girls won a share of their first state swimming title Saturday in C.T. Branin Natatorium while GlenOak's Jim ' Brower won a state crown, two national records were set by two members of the same family, and Akron Firestone ended Cincinnati St. Xavier's 12-year bold on the boys title. It was an exciting and tense finish for the GlenOak girls, who at first thought a fifth-place finish by the team's freestyle relay would cost them the team title by one-point to Cincinnati Oak Hills. ¡ Official word of GlenOak's team victory, however, was quickly conveyed to the jubilant victors and to Coach Mark Pruiss, who was literally at a loss for words. 1 "They came through. They always do," the elated coach managed to say following the traditional team dunking after the awards were presented. Pruiss threw himself in a
couple more times and said, "I'm too lucky. This doesn't happen to me." The pressure had been on the freestyle relay squad of Betsy Bing, Amy Evey, Kay Walter and Kellie Snyder, two of whom were in tears and the other two were on the verge before they were informed of the tie. Also scoring on the second day of the meet for GlenOak was sophomore Kim Hanson, who took third in the 100-yard freestyle in 52.27. Beth Washut won her second race in the meet, setting a state record of 49.97 in that event. That time bested Wasbut's preliminary record of 50.24 which ousted the 1981 mark of 50.29 also set by Washut, a junior at Ashtabula St. John. Carole Lyon scored for the Golden Eagles, taking third in the consolation finals of the 100 backstroke event for an eighth-place finish overall. Brower, a senior who won the pre-
liminaries of the breaststroke with 59.34, took the district crown with 59.49. "I swam the best I could this morning and the best I could tonight. I won this one for Mike Crawford," Brower said of his GlenOak tea'mmate who suffered a neck injury in a pool accident two weeks ago and remains hospitalized in Timken Mercy Medical Center. "We're good friends and be wanted me to win this," Brower said. The GlenOak girls tied Oak Hills with 93 points to share the title of the sixth annual girls event. In third , was Toledo St. Ursula with 76 points followed by Worthington with 74. Pruiss and Akron Firestone coach Mike Wilcox were plotting to grab the state laurels this year, but neither appeared to grasp the reality when it actually happened.
