The Moeller Varsity Crusaders won the Regional Championships Friday night, beating Middletown 20-14 at Dayton's Welcome Stadium. The Crusaders scored first in the first quarter when Adam Hyzdu faked a handoff, then stepped toward the line of scrimmage and veered to his right. In the open, Hyzdu ran 55 yards for the score. Terry Knecht's extra point was good and the Crusaders led 7-0. That was the only score of the first half. After a defensive struggle in the second quarter, both teams headed for the locker room, and the score remained 7-0. Moeller, again, scored first in the second half, on their first possession. Hyzdu lofted a 60-yard touchdown pass to senior Mike Beerman to make the score 14-0. After a Middletown fumble, the Crusaders scored again. This time on a one-yard run by Hyzdu, capping off a 38-yard drive. Middletown running back Jeff Cothran fumbled three times on the night. "In an option offense, there's going to be fumbles. He's running hard and everyone knows he wants to win, .. said Coach Klonne. The extra point was blocked, leaving the score 20-0. Middletown scored once in the third quarter and again in the fourth, both on two-yard runs by Cothran. The extra points were good as Middletown threatened late, 20-14.

FOR THEIR COLLEGE PROGRAMS Dickey '88 paces DePauw DePauw defeated Wabash 4114. as sophomore tailback Terry Dickey (Moeller High) rushed for a career-high 145 yards on 16 carries and one touchdown. He also caught six passes for 53 yards. Dickey has rushed for 1.032 yards in two season. D'Juan Francisco '85 is a starter in the defense secondary for the National Champion Fighting Irish. Vada Murray '86 has been a maJor force for the Rose Bowl bound Michigan Wolverines. Vada had a particularly big role in the victory over the u.c.L.A. Bruins.

Mike Hyzdu '85 is winding down his collegiate career for the Miami Redskins in an outside linebacker position. Ray Hilvert '86 continues to be as sure-handed as ever as he keeps the Boston College offense rolling. Trevor Ryals'86 helps anchor the center of the offensive line for the ACC Champion Virginia Cavaliers who are bowl bound. Ed Ennis '86 is completing a fine career for the resurgent Louisville Cardinals. Brian Murphy'86 is in his second season as a starter for Hanover Co liege. Biran Williams '86 continues to be a big contributor in the defensive secondary for the Boston College Eagles.

THE LAST Otrr For a brief moment, he didn't move. As the ball nestled into his glove, he cradled it as a mother would hold her newborn child, gently, lovingly, and full of wonder. Ron Tenkman loved this moment, probably more than any other in his life. As all kids had, he had fantasized about it hundreds of times, however, now that it was real. he wasn't sure whether to believe it. However. his eyes and ears told him it was true. The scoreboard read Moeller 12, Upper Arlington 4. This was the third out of the final inning. This was real. The ball and this feeling were his to keep. A full second had passed and he hadn't awaken to realize it was just a dream. He heard the cheers ringing in his ears and this wasn't a dream. it was really happening. His face exploded into a look of utter happiness and indescribable emotion. and he began to run. searching for someone to hug. He didn't have to run very far. Running towards him were Adam Hyzdu and Jerry Storm. hands in the air, screaming something that he couln't understand. This didn't matter. They had been there with him throughout the season. through all of the tough games, the losing streaks, injuries, suspensions and lost starting jobs. This season had a happy ending afterall. The Elder Panthers can proudly lay claim to having put a total of 8 of the 31 total losses on the Moeller ledger.

This was truly a happy ending to a great season. As they ran toward the mound, they saw yet another scene of celebration. They saw the brothers Hindersman leaping into each others arms, experiencing a moment filled with such joy that it didn't seem real. Then their teammates were climbing on them, screaming and reaching for them; each player was a part of this celebration because no one, not even the coaches, the fans or the people listening on the radio. could understand how they felt. For this brief moment before the fans. public address announcers, state baseball officials, television, and radio crews interrupted, it was just the Crusaders. piling on top of each other, experiencing a tremendous feeling that was theirs and theirs alone. They had won the state championship. They had bea~over 100 other teams and they had beaten the odds. They had beaten their own self doubts and they had beaten them on a few occasions. The coaches had been through the season also, and had felt all of the pain and joy involved. But this was different for the coaches. They had been coaching for years and in ten years, they would still be coaching. High school athletes have a brief lifespan. They are freshmen one minute, alumni the next. Within minutes of Tenkman cat~hing that last flyball, the rest of the would would intrude Âˇon their moment. The Hindersmans. Hyzdu. Coach Cameron. and others would be rushed in front of television cameras. The others would find themself surrounded by microphones, cameras and pencils. They would then look into the stands for family and friends to share the joy with them. But those first few moments belonged to them and to no one else. No one.

The Crusaders revenged a three-game losing streak to the Elder Panthers Saturday night, eliminating them from the Playoffs by a score of 35-7, before 20,000 fans at Nippert Stadium. Moeller advanced to the Regional Championship and will play Middletown next Friday night at 7:30 PM at Welcome Stadium in Dayton. The Crusaders got on the board first, after neither team managed to score in the first quarter. Quarterback Adam Hyzdu took the ball in from the one. The extra point, by Terry Knecht, was good and the score was 7-0. Moeller scored again before the half, set up by a Chris Ryals interception of a Rob Paff pass. Leaving the offense in good field position, the defense handed the ball over to the offense at the 20. Under a heavy rush on 3rd down, Adam completed a strike to tight end Joe currin, the play going to the 1-yard line. Carlos Collins dove in for the score. Knecht's kick was good- 14-0. With 26 seconds left, a Panthers threat was crushed by a Dan Buckley fumble recovery and both teams headed for the lock~r room. The third quarter was a defensive struggle as neither team scored. The fourth quarter saw 28 points scored, 21 by Moeller. Collins scored again on a one-yard run, capping off an 11play, 76-yard drive and the Crusaders led 21-0. Elder finally reached the scoreboard midway through the quarter on a 5-yard pass from Paff to 8atillo, 21-7. Moeller put the game away, reeling off two late scores by Jody Smith on runs of 52 and 43 yards. Jody had a remarkable night, rushing 12 times for 144 yards. The final score, Moeller 35, Elder 7. The Regional Championship will be at 7:30PM, Friday Night, at Dayton's Welcome Stadium.

Day in and day outâ€˘

There's the never-ending chore of hauling the equipment out of storage. spacing it strategically around the entire practice area so that each squad has exactly what it needs and 2-3 hours later comes the equally thankless task of collecting everything and getting it returned to secure storage. In between might come the marking or remarking of a field for a game or practice, or the many and varied requests of any one of the coaches or players to run an errand or help them solve a problem that "can't wait ... the athletes have When finished. showered and left for the day, these young men are still here, sweeping and mopping the locker room so that it will be 'reasonably' presentable until the masses return to wreck havoc again the next day. What kind of a support system is needed to insure that the 'Big Moe Machine' rolls on smoothly through each daily practice and weekly game on all three levels? In years past as many as ten to twelve young men shared in these duties. In 1989, these responsibilities are handled very smoothly and efficiently by three youngsters. The 'main' man - 2-year Head Football Manager, Senior Jeff Herricks Jeff is one of the four children of Robert and Lynn Hericks of the Loveland area. His older brother Tony, Moeller '89, is a first-year college student; younger brother, Andy. is a very active Moeller freshmen; sister Jessica is a 6th grader at Loveland Elementary. Jeff actually began his managing experience in the Moeller Basketball Program during his own freshmen year. At the end of his sophomore year. his quiet. polite and efficient ways had caught the eye of everyone in the Athletic Program. It was only logical to approach him with the ultimate and most demanding challenge - Head Manager of Football.

True to his loyalities, Jeff only agreed after consulting those involved and being assured that he could continue to do basketball as well. Jeff would like to continue this labor of love in the college of his choice next year. He will not have to look too far for enthusiastic references. In addition to the JulyMarch managerial duties, he serves on the Rally Committee coordinates the T.V. Studio and for two years, has worked on the Technical Crew for the spring play.

You're only as good as the people around you! Tom Rineair, a junior. is completing his second year of these duties. Tom is the .. pup" of Cliff and Betty Rinear of Milford, having four older brothers and two older sisters. Also a member of the Rally Commi.ttee, Tom has found a new 'love' -LaCrosse. In 1989, Tom received the 'Spirit Award' in this rugged sport. Andy Hericks - a freshmen more good qualities. continued

Can you believe? This 'ball of energy' is a member of the Band, runs Cross Country, in addition to serving as a critical third part of the manager team. It would certainly appear that the family work ethic continues with Andy. While these three young men are the Moeller student components of the managerical staff, it would be an unforgiveable oversight if the efforts of Joe Asbrock, Harry Becker and Cliff Kemp were not mentioned. Every Thursday afternoon, these gentlemen spend about 2-3 hours checking all of the players equipment for needed repair and adjustments On game day, they're here 4 hours before kickoff to help load the equipment and drive it the game site. Also deserving of special mention for his daily assistance is a future Man of Moeller, Mike Kamphake. A BIG ROUND OF APPLAUSE FOR THEM ALL. Yds.

Crusaders 38 The Crusaders earned the third playoff spot in Division I, Region 12, Friday night, defeating arch-rival Princeton 38-21 at Riverfront Stadium. Moeller opened up the scoring in the first quarter after Ardell Barkley intercepted a Johnny Mattress pass and returned it deep into Viking territory, leaving the Crusaders in excellent field position. Capping off the short drive, Adam Hyzdu carried the ball in from 6 yards out. The extra point by Terry Knecht was good making the score 7-0. Princeton then broke away for 21 unanswered points on runs of 20 and 3 yards by Tracy Peek and a 3-yard run by Mattress. Midway through the second quarter, the Vikings led 21-7. Moeller pulled within 7 when on 3rd and 10, Hyzdu lofted a pass to Carlos Collins streaking down the sidelines, who made a nice fingertip catch and raced 90 yards for the score, with 2:51 remaining in the half. Holding the Vikes four downs, the Crusader defense returned the ball to the offense with under a minute left in the half. Driving down the field on passes of 28 and 9 yards, Moeller moved the ball to the Princeton 48 with 2 seconds on the clock. Hyzdu dropped back and lofted the ball into the endzone where Mike Beerman made a miraculous grab in a crowd to come down with the score to tie the game at 21. Beerman caught 4 passes on the night for 131 yards and Hyzdu completed 9 of 19 for 274 yards.

After the half, the Crusaders scored quickly, on a one-yard run by Hyzdu to pull ahead 28-21. After Dan Buckley recovered a Mattress fumble to give the ball bacK over to the offense. Hyzdu tossed a 49-yard pass to Beerman to put Moeller up 35-21. Late in the third quarter, Terry Knecht. who was perfect for the Crusaders .all night making all 5 extra points, made good on a 27-yard field goal, making the final score Moeller 38, Princeton 21. The first playoff game will be played against Elder at Nippert Stadium on Saturday.

Reserves Review RESERVES DEFEAT VIKINGS, GO 10-0 The Moeller Crusader Reserve Football Team defeated the Princeton Vikings 21-15. Moeller became the first reserve team in seven years to go undefeated, 10-0. The Vikings scored first by returning the opening kickoff 87 yards. The extra point was good and Princeton led 7-0. Moeller struck right back and scored on a 9 yard run by Jason Borcherding. Jason Brown kicked the extra point and at the end of the first quarter, the score was tied 7-7. · Midway through the second quarter, the Crusaders scored again. Scott Fye punted the ball and the return man for the Vikings got hammered and the ball popped loose. Jon Morgan recovered the ball in the end zone and the score was 13-0.

Jason Brown kicked the extra point. In the closing minutes of the half, Princeton scored on a 74-yard run. The two point conversion was successful and at halftime, the Vikings led 15-14. The winning touchdown was set up by linebacker Scott Ostholthoff's interception deep in Viking territory. Junior Steve Larkin scored on a 13-yard cutback run. The 90-yard pass completion from Adam Hyzdu to Carlos Collins vs Princeton was the longest pass play in Moeller Football History. The three TD passes which Adam Hyzdu threw in the Princeton game brought his r~g~lar season total to 17 which will rank in third place on the all-time listing. The 273 yards passing in the final game brought Adam's r~ular season total to 1,464 yards, a 4th place all-time ranking. The 24-extra points which Adam has kicked this season brings his career kick scoring total to 93 points, at present, the 3rd place rank all time. Lancers Frustrate Crusaders Moeller suffered its second setback of the season Friday night, dropping a 42-38 thriller to LaSalle. The 4-point difference was made by extra points as each team scored 6 touchdowns. LaSalle got on the board first on a 3-yard run by Allgeier, but the Crusaders rallied for the next three scores, with Jody Smith taking the ball in each time on runs of 3, 25, and 6 yards to put Moeller ahead 20-7. LaSalle scored twice more before the half on a one-yard run and a 31-yard pass from Isphording to Umberg. Both teams went to the locker room with the Lancers leading 21-20. After the half, the Lancers scored first on a 12-yard run by Allgeier, and then again on a 28yard pass from Isphording to Umberg, to make it 35-20. The Crusaders rallied again, putting 12 quick points on the board. Carlos Collins broke off a 74-yard run, but the 2point conversion attempt failed.

Playoff

When the defense took the field, Dan Buckley intercepted an Isphording pass and returned it 65 yards for the score. Again, the kick failed, but Moeller pulled within 3, the score 35-32. In the fourth quarter, the Lancers scored again on a 4-yard run by Allgeier and the extra point was good. The Crusaders closed out the scoring on a 15 yard run by Carlos Collins, but the kick was no good.

The final score: LaSalle 42, Moeller 38. LaSalle improves its record to 7-1 while Moeller drops to 6-2. Next Game: PARENT'S NIGHT ROGER BACON at Galbreath Field Oct. 20, 1989 8:00 PM

PASADENA, Calif.- University of Michigan football coach Bo Schembechler summed up the last-minute exploits of a former· Moeller High safety against UCLA this way: "Vada Murray blocked the extra point, Vada Murray recovered the onsides kick and Vada Murray intercepted the final pass of the game. Vada Murray did a good job." Sophomore J.D. Carlson's fourth field goal, a 24-yarder with a second left, lifted the Wolverines to a stunning 24-23 comeback victory against UCLA Saturday night at the Rose Bowl. -~ Carlson's kick capped a nine-point Michigan flurry in the game's final two minutes. Murray made Carlson's heroics possible. He Vada Murray recovered Carlson's onside kick at the UCLA 46 with 1:35 left. The ball squirted through to the left sideline, where Murray dived on it. "When I saw it bounce high after it got by the second line, I knew I could get it," Murray said. "J.D. got it on the ground good."

Earlier, after a UCLA touchdown made the score, 23-15 with 5:42 left, placekicker Alfredo Velasco, who had converted 49 straight extra points, had this one blocked by Murray. Murray's interception of a desperation pass at the Michigan 4 was the game:S fmal play.

Reserves Review RESERVE FOOTBALL Saturday, September 14, the Moeller Reserve Football Team continued its undefeated streak to 8-0 by defeating LaSalle 21-0. Junior running back Steve Larkin (4-111-2) . opened the scoring, rushing 27 yards for a touchdown. The extra point attempt was unsuccessful and at halftime, the score was 6-0. The defense had another outstanding day as they held the Lancers to 46 total yards. C5 rushing, 41 passing). In the third quarter, Ryan Jackson (5-20-1) scored from 3 yards out. Sean Tunning scored the two-point conversion and the score was 14-0. Steve Larkin scored his second touchdown of the game in the fourth quarter on a 68-yard touchdown run. Jason Brown kicked the extra point and the final score was Moeller 21, LaSalle o. Moeller has outscored their opponents this year 163-43. Next Saturday, the Reserves play at Roger Bacon for complete ownership of the GCL title. Crusaders Move To-ward, Playoffs The Crusader Varsity Football Team returned to winning form Friday night, ending a 2game losing skid by beating Roger Bacon 38-0. The Crusaders scored quickly, putting 3 points on the board with a 27-yard field goal by Terry Knecht. The defense took the field and quickly returned the ball to the offense. The defense allowed only 66 yards of total offense on the night. Moeller's second score came on a 2-yard run by Adam Hyzdu after an impressive drive. The offense scored once again before the half on a 53yard run by Jody Smith, who had 2 TDs in the game and ran the ball 17 times for 157 yards. The score at the half was 17-0. Moeller scored 3 times in the second half as the offense continued to roll over the Spartans and the Crusader defense refused to budge. Carlos Collins opened up the 3rd quarter scoring with a oneyard run to make the score 23-0. The extra point by Knecht made it 24-0.

Playoff

Collins had a total of 70 yards rushing on the day. Brian Zelina, Jeff Crable, Tony Walker, Chad Whitaker, Brad Hindersman, Todd Ille, Jerry Storm, Pat Holt, Craig Meyer and ' Ardell Barkley had outstanding games for the defense, providing the Crusader offense with good field position all night. Jody Smith opened the fourth quarter with a one-yard TD run to make the score 31-0.

Neil Dougherty closed out the scoring for the Crusaders, rushing from 3 yards out and the extra point by Terry Knecht made the final score Moeller 38, Roger Bacon 0. The defense earned its 3rd shutout of the year. Next week's game is against Princeton in the traditional showdown at Riverfront Stadium.

Reserves Review RESERVE FOOTBALL On Saturday, October 21, the Moeller Reserve Football Team emerged as GCL Champions by defeating Roger Bacon 27-0. With one game left on their schedule, the Reserves have a chance to go undefeated for the season. As of now, they stand at 9-0.

Jeff Raussen scored the first touchdown in the first quarter on a one-yard run. The extra point attempt was unsuccessful and at halftime, Moeller led 6-0. In the third quarter, Moeller erupted for two touchdowns to blow open the game. Ryan Jackson scored from 4 yards out. Jason Brown kicked the extra point and the score was 13o. Jason Florimonte intercepted a pass and returned it to inside the 10-yard line. Ryan Jackson scored again this time from 6 yards away and Jason Brown kicked the extra point. The Freshmen Fighting Crusaders won against the LaSalle Lancers by a score of 20-6. This made their record 3-2. The Offense played a great first half. They scored 2 TDs. by Kelly Davis on an One approximately 25-yard run. The second was a pass to Mike Bell who was wide open. The offense line had a great first half. The second half. though, wasn't as good. The 3rd TD came on a punt return by Kelly Davis who was given great protection by the punt return team. The Defense had an excellent game holding the Lancers to one TD which came on a first and two because of some punt team difficulties. Otherwise they kept the Lancers deep in their half of the field most of the game. Overall. the team had an exce 11 ent game. Good Job! by John Kilgore

Tough Jgss Qn ~ ~old and rainy day_t The sixth game of the Freshmen Crusaders was a defeat of 12-7. They now have a 3-3 record. Bacon scored on two passes and some breaks, but that's basically all they did. The Moeller Defense kept fighting till the end. They didn't give up and they held Bacon pretty we 11 in check. The Offense had their one TD on a run by Kelly Davis. Even though they scored only once, they played an excellent game. Their last drive was about 60 yards to the Bacon 20-yard line. They were stopped by a penalty which gave them fourth and fifteen. They didn't get the first down and Bacon ran the time out. Overall. the team played a great game. Several coaches said the team played hard until the time ran out and that's all that matters. by John Kilgore

Panthers Rally Past Crusaders

The Crusaders suffered their first set back of the year Friday night, upset by a well-prepared Elder team 18-7 at Nippert Stadium before 20,000 fans, who were not turned away by the cold and the rain. The first quarter was a defensive struggle, as neither team scored. Moeller took the lead in the second quarter, capping off an impressive drive with Carlos Collins running off tackle from 4 yards out. Hyzdu added the extra point to put the Crusaders up 7-0. The Crusader defense allowed the Elder quarterback only 3 completions in 15 attempts in the first half. The turning point came in the 3rd quarter after Moeller's 5th sack of the quarter and 8th of the day. Paff found wide receiver Joe Ficker for a 61-yard TD pass to cut Moeller's lead 76. From this point on, the Elder offense moved the ball confidently, scoring in the 3rd quarter again on a 62-yard pass and a 28 yarder in the 4th quarter. A Crusader scoring opportunity was dashed in the 2nd quarter when Brian Zelina's return of a blocked extra point was called back. The ball was ruled dead. Elder remains unbeated at 70 while Moeller is 6-1. Next week's game is Homecoming against LaSalle at Galbreath. by Jeff Belle

In that printing, we noted in reference to a u.s.A. TODAY story which discussed the profile of their Top 25 Ranking from 1982 until the present, "The Crusaders .have not cracked the elite Super 25 ranking in that publication yet this season." Doug wrote us to say, "Would it interest you to know that Moeller has been ranked since pre-season in the na_i::JQ~S mo_st wide !.Y:-t:;:!_r_gy_l_ated r~nl5ingÂŁ. the National Prep Poll, which I have compiled the last three years for football and boys basketball? Also, you might note, that Moeller was listed .among the nation's pre-season Top 25 teams in 'Street & Smith's' College Football Yearbook, the nations's ffiQ.!<l.:t. wi9ely ciz::_culated and oldest pre-season publication. In that listing, Moeller holds down an impressive #14 ranking. Our tenth game opponent from over on Chester Road, the Princeton Vikings are two notches above us at #12. Doug has indicated in the way of further specifics that this particular poll is used by ESPN's Scholastic Sports American as well as being syndicated to over 200 newspapers. Reserves Review RESERVE FOOTBALL The Moeller Crusader Reserve Football Team improved their record to 7-0 by defeating Elder 21-7 on Saturday, October 7. The defense played another outstanding game. Joe Cameron blocked a Panther punt and the ball rolled out of the endzone for a safety. After one quarter of play, Moeller led 2-0. In the second quarter, Jeff Raussen threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Jeff Baur. Scott Fye added the extra point and the scoreboard read 9-0. Later in the quarter, Elder scored on a 2yard touchdown pass. The extra point attempt was good and at halftime, the score read 9-7. Early in the 4th quarter, Junior Adam Adkins scored on a 22-yard run from scrimmage. The extra point was no good making the score 15-7. With 4 seconds on the clock, Jason Florimonte intercepted an Elder pass and ran it back 36 yards for a touchdown insuring the victory. Final score 21-7. FROSH FOOTBALL On September 26, Moeller's Freshmen Fighting Crusaders beat St. Xavier 31-20 to give them a 2-1 record. The defense was awesome. They had 4 fumble recoveries Cone on a kickoff) and 2 interceptions. They stopped most of St. Xavier's running and didn't give them goodÂˇ pass opportunity with 3 sacks. The only bad spot was when St. Xavier returned Âˇour first kickoff for a touchdown. The offense had a great game too. Kelly Davis had 19 carries for 108 yards and 2 TDs. Chad Seigert had 30 yards on 5 carries. Quarterback, Dan Feichtner ran one touchdown. The other 2 TDs were passes to Jim Kennedy for 11 yards and Mike Bell for 41 yards. One extra point was kicked by Chris Kent. The offensive line was great with their blocking to help get a total of 259 yards on 55 plays. by John Kilgore

On October 3, Freshmen Crusaders lost to Elder 27-6 to give them a record of 2-2. There were comments from the coaches on the defense. But it was by far not their best game. The Elder offense scored on them 3 times in the first half and once in the second. The defense wasn't getting the turnovers they got the last game either. Offensively, Moeller was not at its best either. The quarterback just wasn't getting the protection he needed. He just couldn't connect with his receivers. The offense had 120 yards and one TD. by John Kilgore

In the closest game of the year so far, the Crusaders defeated a tough St. Xavier team 28-20 to raise their record to 10-0. Xavier took an early lead with a 41-yard first-quarter field goal capping off their first drive to make it 3-0. Moeller stormed back on a run by Jody Smith and Adam Hyzdu added the extra point to put Moeller ahead 7-3. The Crusaders started to pull ahead with their second score. A pass from Hyzdu to Keith Valerius for his first score of the year. This made it 14-3. However, St. Xavier kept fighting and pulled back within four with a late second quarter TD to make the score 14-10. After the half, a fired-up St. Xavier team drive it in from the one after being set up by a 48-yard pass. The extra point was good and St. Xavier pulled ahead 17-14. The Crusaders took advantage of penalities and substitutions when they received the ball and capped off their drive on a 52yard TD pass from Hyzdu to Matt Birrell to put the Moeller ahead for good, 21-17. However, the game was not over. St. Xavier did not lie down, making a field goal in the fourth quarter to pull within one, the closest margin of the day, 21-20. Threatening in the final minutes, the Bombers seemed ready to score and pull ahead, mounting an impressive drive, when Quarterback Shawn Brennan was spun around and fumbled the ball which Todd Ille scooped up and returned 62 yards to score and put the game on ice. The final score: Moeller 28, Xavier 20.

SOCCER - On Tuesday, September 19, the Moeller Soccer Team defeated perennial power St. Xavier 3-2, in a key GCL matchup. Goals for Moeller were scored by Scott Schaeper and Raul Renny (2). Standouts included goalkeeper Mike McMillan and stopper Kevin Balsly. Two days later, the Crusaders traveled to Dayton to play the Northmount TBirds, defending State Champs. Play was even throughtout the game, but Northmount prevailed 2o. However, no goals came from free play. The Reserves coming off a 2-1 loss to St. Xavier were defeated 3-0 Saturday, September 23. The Varsity defeated Purcell 3-0 on goals by Jeff Leinberger, Scott Schaeper and Mark Schaeper. The Reserves also won 2-0. This past week, Big Moe played its most important game of the year against 3rd-ranked Roger Bacon. Moeller pulled out a 1-1 tie on a goal by Scott Schaeper. The Reserve Soccer Team lost a heart-breaker, 2-1. A few days later, Moeller was defeated by Anderson 3-1, in a lackluster performance. The lone goal was scored by Joe Goodall, while Mark Schaeper played a tremendous game. On Saturday, the Soccer Crusaders tied LaSalle 0-0 in a tough match at Galbreath Field. The reserves were defeated 1-0. This week, Big Moe faces two tough teams in Elder CTuesday, 7 PM in the Pit), and St. Xavier (Saturday, 7 PM Away). Currently, Moeller stands on top of the GCL with one more round to go.

St. Xavier scored first on a safety and the score remained 2-0 at halftime. The defense kept St. Xavier scoreless in the second half. .Jason Florimonte had an interception and there were numerous losses contributed by the defensive line. Steve Larkin scored both touchdowns for the Crusaders. The final score read 12-2. Next week, Moeller plays Elder at home, Saturday, October 7. Game time is 10:00 AM. by Sean Tunning

Run Q The Moeller ~arsity Cross Country Team continues its fine season in grand style on Saturday 9-2.3 by placing second in a very challenging field at the Harrison Invitational. Mike Brewer maintained his pattern of winning the race. Scott Popolin, Mark Schaeper, Matt Holland and Scott Schaeper completed the Moeller top five. Tuesday, September, the team placed second in a solid field at the Anderson Invitational, one point separating them from first. In this fine field of runners, Mike Brewer had to settle for his first, second place finish of 1989.

Conditioning begins on Sunday, October 1st. Despite the departure of Moeller's pioneer of this sport, Father Tedesco, the program is anxiously preparing for its 3rd season of action. This year, Father's replacement wj_ 11 be that LaCrosse Czar from Northern Ohio, Brother Joseph Kamis, S.M., Principal of Moeller High Schoo 1.

.. GOLF - The team has completed the GCL regular season with a fine 82 record. This was good for second place in the league. Their dual meet record stands at a very solid 12-5. During the week of 9-25-89, the squad enjoyed a big week by beating two of the City's topranked teams. On Monday, September 18, the Crusaders defeated rival Elder 158-162. The Panthers were ranked 8th in the City. On Thursday, the team traveled to Hamilton and beat the area's 5th-ranked team, 162-164. Seniors Doug Daley and Brian Habegger led the Elder Victory by firing 36 and 38 respectively. Senior Bob Radwan led the charge against Hamilton with a 38 while Junior Scott Rahl shot a 40. The team also placed 3rd in the Troy Invitational. The highlight of that day was provided by Captain Doug Daley. Doug fired a fine 76 in some adverse wind conditions to tie for the individual championship. Unfortunately, Doug lost in a playoff, but, nonetheless, brought home a nice second-place trophy. Junior Mike O'Brien, along with Doug Daley have averaged around 40 strokes per match to lead the squad.

On Tuesday, September 26th, the Linkmen dropped a tough decision to the City's No.3 ranked team, the undefeated Braves of Indian Hill. The next day was another tough decision for Moe as they were beaten by St. Xavier by a 171-189 count. The Crusaders were led by Captain Doug Daley's 43 stroke effort. Thursday closed out the GCL League Race. Moeller claimed 2nd place with a 2-stroke victory over Elder 167-169. Junior Mike O'Brien shot a fine 37 and was supported by a solid 39 from Daley. They competed in the Princton Fall Classic at Middletown's Weatherwax Course on Saturday, September 30th and finished 14th out of 36 teams. Senior Doug Daley's 82 and Senior Mike Heenan's 83 led the Crusaders.

The Moeller Varsity Crusaders defeated a strong Erie Cathedral Prep squad 22-6 Saturday at Galbraith Field. Erie Prep was ranked No. 4 in the State of Pennsylvania coming into the game. Both teams were shut out in the first quarter because of strong defense on both sides. The Crusaders were first to score as the result of a 9-play. 85-yard drive. Quarterback Adam Hyzdu ran the ball in from 3 yards out to make it 6-0. Hyzdu then took a pitch and headed for the endzone. but flipped the ball to wide receiver Matt Birrell among a cluster of Erie Prep defensemen for the two-point conversion. The drive was highlighted by a 52-yard completion from Hyzdu to tightend Chris Asbrock. Erie Prep came right back on its next possession and caped a 9-play, 69-yard drive with a 31yard touchdown pass. Those were the only points that the Moeller defense was to allow. The Crusaders closed out the scoring in the first half with a 29-yard completion from Hyzdu to Birrell, with Hyzdu running over the goal line for another 2-point conversion to make it Moeller 16, Erie Prep 6. The third quarter was another defensive struggle with neither team able to score. A driving rain caused both teams to go to their running game. Carlos Collins ran 24 times for a total of 150 yards and Hy?.du completed 8 passes on 13 attempts for 162 yards.

Reserves Review The Moeller Crusader Reserve Football Team defeated Xenia Beavercreek 43-14 Saturday, September 9th. The Crusaders put points on the board early in the first quarter. Jon Morgan intercepted a Beavercreek pass and gave the offense its first possession. On the third play from scrimmage, Jeff Raussen (8-13-107) threw a 91-yard touchdown pass to Jason Brown (3-50-1). Jon Morgan rushed into the endzone for the 2-point conversion. Later in the quarter, Jeff Raussen rushed for a 9-yard touchdown. Jason Brown added the 2-point conversion. At the end of the first quarter, Moeller led 16-0. Beavercreek broke through the middle for a 72-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter. The 2-point conversion pass was deflected by Jason Florimonte. Moeller Linebacker Scott Ostholhoff intercepted a pass deep in Beavercreek territory late in the first half giving the offense great field position. Jeff Raussen threw a 18-yard strike to Clint Whalen (2-25-1) for a touchdown. Scott Fye kicked the extra point and Moeller led at halftime 23-G.

In the third quarter, Jeff Raussen scored his second touchdown of the game from the 1yard line. Scott Fye kicked the extra point and the score was 30G. Another great defensive stand led to Ryan Jackson's 1-yard plunge into the end zone. The extra point was no good. After 3 quarters of play, Moeller 36, Xenia G. Âˇ After a long drive that ate up the rest of the clock in the third quarter, Ryan Jackson scored again on another 1 yard run on the first play of the fourth quarter. Shawn Lucke kicked the extra point and the score was 43-6. Beavercreek scored their last touchdown with 52 seconds remaining by blocking a punt and recovering in the endzone. The 2-point conversion was successful making the final score 43-14. The Reserves play next Saturday, September 16 at home versus Purcell-Marian. Game time is 10:00 AM by Sean Tunning

On Course The Crusader Golf Team is proved to have been ranked No. 9 in the first City poll. Doug Daley is the only returning starter, but Coach Rick Bohne feels that as the season progresses, the Crusaders could be tough to beat. Mike O'Brian, Bob Radwan. Nick Sabino, Mike Heenan, Adam Fannon and Scott Rahl round out a potentially dangerous team.

. . ··The 'Spirit' behind the Spirit The Moeller Cheerleaders recently returned from a National Cheerleader Association Summer Workship where they received recognition as the top cheer 1 eadi ng squad at the camp. The workshop was held at the University of Kentucky and attracted over 350 cheerleaders from surrounding states. The N.C.A. sponsors the "Spirit Award" at each of their workshops. Each squad in attendance voted for the squad wn1cn they felt was the most deserving of this award. The Moeller Cheerleaders were selected for this award above all other cheerleaders at the workshop on _the basis oL--t.heh-· - -cheer leading technique, unity, friendliness. cooperation, leadership and sportsmanship. In addition to this prestigious award, both the Varsity and Reserve Squads were nominated for the Award of Excellence, based on their outstanding performances during the workship. Mrs. Connie Boehner is the Cheerleader Director of all ievels of the Moeller Program. Senior members of the Varsity Squad are Lisa Bonekemper, Arnie Davis, Joni Huninghake, Jane Mueller, Shannon O'Meara, Julie Sonnanstine, Angel Waechter. Although the Crusaders have not cracked the elite Super 25 ranking in the u.s.A. TODAY yet this season, they do hold the distinction of holding the best composite ranking in its seven-year history. Moeller has enjoyed final ranking positions: 1st-1982, 7th1983, 12th-1284, and Sth-1985 for four appearances totaling 76 points. Moeller graduate Scott Schaffner's fine, 12 of 18 for 220 yards and two touchdowns, performance in the Minnesota victory over Iowa State has him ranked 2nd in the Nation in passing. He has 206 points. This is based upon an NCAA formula which is similar to the NFL's. It figures in completions, TD and interception percentages.

1988 Most Valuable Player, Casey Fisher, suffered a broken finger as he prepared to go into action last Monday for Wittenberg's J.V. against the Dayton Flyers. He was looking forward to competing against his buddy, Scott Davis '88, and his nemesis, Steve Keller from Elder. There'll be other occasions, Casey - Good Luck.

The Crusaders exploded early against Dayton Dunbar Saturday night at Welcome Stadium. Carlos Collins took the opening kickoff 90 yards for Moeller's first score, and Adam Hyzdu added the extra point to make it 7-0. Dunbar received the ball, but couldn't hold on to it for very long, turning it over deep in their own territory on their first series. The Crusaders took advantage of the opportunity with a 41-yard TD pass from Hyzdu to tightend Chris Asbrock. However, the 2point conversion failed and the score remained 13-0. After a controversial onside kick attempt was ruled against the Crusaders, Dunbar mounted their first real drive, but were quickly shut down by an over-powering Moeller defense which allowed only 34 rushing yards and 0 passing yards all day. Moeller's final score before the half came on a 32-yard pass from Hyzdu to a wide-open Mike Beerman standing in the endzone and Hyzdu's kick made it 20-0. After the half, Moeller came back to score twice. In the third period, after an impressive drive, Hyzdu took the ball in himself from the 5-yard line and added the kick to raise the score to 27-0. Again the defense shut down Dunbar and returned the ball to the Crusader offense. The final score of the game came in the 4th quarter on an 8-yard pass form Hyzdu to wide receiver Matt Birrell and Terry Knecht closed out the scoring with the extra point, making the final score Moeller 34, Dayton Dunbar o.

Crusader hopefuls should lbe very satisfied with these early returns as only two of our first four opponents have broken in to the win columns. FRESHMEN FOOTBALL The Freshmen Moeller Crusaders are now 1-1 with their victory against Purcell-Marian. The score was 14-0. The defense was very aggressive with several sacks and a fumble recovering. They got their first scoreless game and only let Purcell come close to scoring on a few occasions. The offense had an excellent day. Kelly Davis carried 9 times fo 106 and 2 TDs of 4 yards and 35 yards. Tom Zinkan carried 5 times for 34 yards and an extra point. Doug Johnson ran the ball 4 times for 15 yards. The quarterback, Dan Feichtner, also ran for 6 yards on 1 carry. This came to a total of 161 yards running. Feitchner completed 6 out of 7 passes. Moeller Grounds Aviators

The Moeller Varsity Crusaders started off the 1989 football season in a big way, defeating the Sycamore Aviators 35-0 in front of an electrified home crowd at Galbraith Field Friday night. The Crusader offense scored on it's first four possessions leading 29-0 at the half. Moeller's first score came on a two-yard run by Carlos Collins, as he dove to his right, behind solid blocking on the offensive line, to put Moeller ahead G-0. Adam Hyzdu then took a pitch and raced across the goal line for the two-point conversion making it 8-0. Doug Burwinkel who kicked well all night, averaging 58.5 yards per kickoff, put the Aviators deep in their own territory for their opening drive. However, a tenacious defensive line and secondary allowed no ground. Led by Jeff Crable, Brian Zelina, Brad Hindersman, Jerry Storm, Chad Whitaker and Todd Ille, the defense forced Sycamore to punt after three plays. Moeller's second score came when Adam Hyzdu scrambled out of the pocket to his right and lofted a 52-yarder to wide receiver Matt Birrell, who had found a soft spot in the Aviator secondary. With a nice move, Birrell got by his man and headed for the end zone to make it 14-0. Hyzdu's kick made it 15-0. Again, the Crusader defense took the field, having yet to allow a first down, and held Sycamore on three plays. A tipped punt by Todd Ille left Moeller in good field position.

Set up by an earthshattering block by Todd Shaffer, Hyzdu rolled out to his left and threw to Junior Todd Naumann for an 18-yard score. Hyzdu's kick made the score 22-0. After the defense again held off a Sycamore threat with fine efforts by Crable, Zelina, Hindersman (2 sacks), Whitaker and Ken Darby, the offense came back to score once more before the half on a spectacular 28-yard diving catch by Chris Asbrock from Hyzdu. The kick made it 290 and both teams headed for the 1ocker room. At halftime, the State Champion Moeller Varsity Baseball Team was presented with their State Championship rings in a brief ceremony. The Crusader Baseball Team, led by Coaches Mike Cameron and Paul Smith was 26-6 in the 1989 season. The Crusaders took the field for the second half and scored late in the third quarter on a 20-yard pass from Hyzdu to Birrell for his second TO of the night. Hyzdu closed out the scoring, missing the extra point making the score 35-0. Moeller's next opponent will be Colerain in the Blue Chip Classic. by Jeff Belle

Reserves Review In the opening game of the regular season, the Moeller Reserve Football Team beat Sycamore 27-14. The first touchdown of the 1989 season was scored late in the first quarter on a 56-yard interception return by Jason Florimonte. Scott Fye added the extra. point and Moeller led 7-0 at the end of the first quarter. Halfway through the second quarter, Ryan Jackson rushed for a 4-yard touchdown. Scott Fye again added the extra point and the Moeller lead extended to 14o. With a minute and a half left in the half, Sycamore scored a touchdown. The defense stopped the extra point attempt and at halftime, the score was Moeller 14, Sycamore 6. In the third quarter, Moeller scored their third and fourth touchdowns of the game. Steve Larkin scored first on a 12-yard run and Ryan Jackson scored his second touchdown of the game on a 6-yard run. The first extra point was no good, but the second one was. At the end of the third quarter, the scoreboard read . Moeller 27, Sycamore 6. In the fourth quarter, Moeller apparently scored their fifth touchdown of the game, Sean Tunning threw a 68-yard touchdown pass to Max Langengamp, but the score was nullified by a clipping penalty. The same drive accounted for Sycamore's second score as a blocked punt resulted in a safety. Moeller 27, Sycamore 8. Sycamore scored a final touchdown late in the quarter, but the extra point was unsuccessful. Final score Moe 11 er 27, Sycamore 14. Tim first came to Moeller in 1982. He then spent a year coaching Varsity Football at Indian Hill High School. A 197 8 graduate of Moeller. Tim played on the the 1976 and 1977 National Championship teams. He also ran on the fourth-place-finishing State Mile Relay Team. After Moeller. Tim went on to the University of Cincinnati earning his B.S. in Business Education. HewasCaptainofthe 1982 U.C. Football Team. While at Moeller, Tim has taught Accounting I and II. General Business. and Physical Education I and II. Tim also serves Moeller as our Head Track and Field Coach.

Bob is a 1982 graduate of Moeller High School. He played for the 1980 State and National Championship and the 1981 State Runner-up football teams as a defensive back. Bob also participated in baseball and track teams. He was Co-Captain of the trac:< team his senior year. In 1988. Bob received ci B.S. in History from the University of Cincinnati. He is currently taking classes at U.C. to obtain his Masters. This is his seventh year of coaching. He has coached the ReseNe Defensive Backs for two years and the Freshmen Defensive Backs two years. This will be Bob's third season as Freshmen Defensive Coordinator and Linebacker Coach. Bob is also an Assistan~ Baseball Coach working with the Freshmen team.

Neither team put points on the board but the scrirmnage had some bright spots. The defense held Landmark to little yardage and the offense put together a long drive in their final series but ran out of plays and fell 3 yards short of the end zone. The second scrirmnage of the year was scheduled at Fairfield Friday. August 18. After an intense week of practice, Moeller scored on the first series of plays. A short Fairfield pass was intercepted and returned for a touchdown by Shawn Lucke. The extra point was assumed and the Crusader led early 7-0. In the closing minutes before halftime, the defense almost lost their shutout. A Fairfield running back turned the corner on a sweep and streaKed down the sidelines but Tony Terzo made a touchdown saving tackle. At halftime, the score remained 7-0. In the second half, the defense continued to hold the Indians from scoring with numerous sacks. It was now time for the offense to dent the scoreboard. Jeff Raussen hooked up with Max Langenkamp on a 49yard touchdown pass. The extra point was kicked and the score was 14-0. Late in the game, the offense marched the length of the field and added some insurance points. Ryan Jackson rushed through the middle for an 11-yard touchdown. Final score: Crusaders 20, Indians 0. Frosh Start Bob Kolkmeyer, Freshmen

Head Freshmen Coach Bob Kolkmeyer and his staff are excited about the 82 young men who have come out for this year's team. There appears to be excellent overall size and speed among the candidates. It will be the very challenging task to the staff of Randy Fath, Offensive Coordinator, Offensive Backs and Wide Receivers; Chris Higgins, Offensive Line; Bill Brewer, Defensive Backs: Bob Kolkmeyer, Defensive Line and Linebackers to attempt to mold these talented individuals into a successful team. The time is quickly upon the group as they'll be exposed to the up and coming Withrow tigers in a scrimmage on Wednesday, August 30th at 4:00 PM. After approximately a two week interval to learn from that experience, they will begin their Moeller careers in earnest when they will host the Delhi Junior High in a 4:00 PM start at Moeller on Wednesday, September 13.

He graduated from Miami in 1979 with a B.S. degree in Industrial Arts Education. He also holds a Master of Secondary Education from Xavier University. Bob began his coaching career as an assistant coach for Xavier High School in Xenia. He has been at Moeller since 1981. In addition to coaching football and wrestling. Moeller Decks The Cards The Moeller Varsity Crusaders extended their record to 2-0 Saturday, routing Colerain 64-3 at Riverfront Stadium in the first Buddy LaRosa Classic. Moeller's first touchdown came on a screen from quarterback Adam HyzduÂˇ to tailback Carlos Collins who ran 41 yards for the score. Hyzdu added the extra point and the Crusaders took an early 7-0 lead. A swarming Crusader Defense, which held the Cardinals to only 135 yards total offense, took the field and allowed Colerain's only score of the day, a 40-yard field goal. The Offense came back to score on another screen from Hyzdu to Collins. This time for 45 yards, with excellent downfield blocking. Hyzdu's kick made the score 14-3. The second quarter belonged to the Crusaders, scoring 22 points, with the Defense allowing nothing. The Offense scored on a 30yard run by Jody Smith, a 39-yard pass from Hyzdu to a wide-open Matt Birrell, and an 11-yard pass from Hyzdu to tight-end Chris Asbrock. The two-point conversion before the half made the score Moeller 36, Colerain 3. The Crusaders starters remained in for the first possession of the second half and Collins scored on a two-yard run with Hyzdu adding the kick to make it 43-3. The Defense, led by Todd Ille, Jeff Crable, Brad Hindersman, Brian Zelina, Tony Walker, Ken Darby and Jerry Storm shut down Colerain again and the Second Offense took the fiel.<;:f, led by back-up quarterback Neil Dougherty.

The 27-yard TD pass from Dougherty to Steve Langenkarnp late in the third quarter and the extra point by Jason Knecht raised the score to Moeller 5-0, Colerain 3. The Offense scored twice in the fourth quarter on a two-yard run by Dougherty and a 48-yard run by Steve Larkin. Knecht made both extra points to close out the scoring, making the final score Moeller 64, Colerain 3. The Offense racked up a total of 562 yards behind powerful line blocking of Keith Fulmer, Todd Shaffer, Rob Steltenpohl, Chris Asbrock, and Paul Barry. Reserves Review Moeller

The Moeller Reserve Football Team won their second game of the year by beating Colerain 20-0. The team improved its record to 2-0. Early in the first quarter. Max Langenkamp scored on a 31yard touchdown pass from Jeff Raussen. The two-point conversion was unsuccessful. The Crusaders led 6-0 at the end of the first quarter. The second score of the ball game was assisted by great defensive plays. Chris Hess sacked the Colerain quarterback deep in the pocket forcing the Cardinals to turn the ball over. Jason Borcherding ran 34 yards for Moeller's second touchdown of the game. Scott Fye kicked the extra point making the score 13-0 at halftime. The crusaders scored their last touchdown in the fourth quarter. Jeff Raussen threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Jackson. Scott Fye again added the extra point and the final score was Moeller 20. Colerain o. Defensive . players who led the shutout were Chris Hess with 3 quarterback sacks. John Morgan with numerous tackles. and Jason Florimonte with 2 interceptions and a blocked punt. Moeller on the Run

1988 Moeller graduate Brian Bonham has secured a starting job on. the Bowling Green State University Varsity Team. He orobably took a big step toward holding that position as he recently scored the only goal in the Falcon's season opener, a 1-0 victory. Not to be upstaged! On the local .scene, the Crusader Varsity Soccer Squad was in the process of achieving a momentous victory over State power Beavercreek only to have a dangerous and violent thunderstorm force the termination of the contest six minutes short of regulation. Coach Hurley and hi's team are starting to receive. some richly deserved recognitiort. Presently, the Varsity Squad's record stands at 1-0-1. They tied a fine traditionladen Sycamore squad 1-1 in their season opener behind another superb effort in goal by Mike McMillan. Then on August 31, following the tough experience at Beavercreek, they plucked the Colerain Cardinals by a solid 6-2 margin.

Early in the first week of school, the Varsity Cross Country squad traveled to Rapid Run Park in Price Hill and participated in a six-team 'scrimmage'. The MoeMen ran second to the defending State Champions from Elder in a very encouraging outing. But the Crusaders led by Junior Mike Brewer, saved their best first-week effort for Thursday at the very tough French Park course. They ran away with the team championship in the AAA Division as they bested a tenteam field. With Brewer leading the way with a new AAA course record time of 16:25 for the tortouous 3. 1 miles. Captain Scott Popolin, Steve Krimmer, Matt Holland and Doug Kohls joined Mike as the scoring unit, with all times finishing in the top seventeen runners. Congratulations to these young men and to their coaches Tim Erdmann and Rich Gemereth.

1989 Baseball Co-Captain Mike Olexa enjoyed an outstanding performance at the Connie Mack National Championships in Farmington, New Mexico in late August. He was named the tournament MVP as his Midland Squad took the National Title. Following the conclusion of the tournament, Mike left immediately for the University of Miami, Florida to begin his collegiate baseball career. An early highlight of that experience will be a trip to the Soviet Union.

The 1989 Moeller Varsity Football Team opened up their season with a scrimmage against a very-talented Mt. Healthy team. With a tough challenge ahead for the defense, it would be a longawaited scrimmage. The Owls' offense was led by an exceptional backfield. But like the defenses of the past, the Big Moe came through and was very tenacious. The .. D.. was led up front by Brad Hindersman and Jeff Crable with

exceptional job. Mt. Healthy stayed on the ground virtually the whole game even though they were stuffed but when they did go to the air, they were no match for the defensive back crew consisting of Ardell Barkley, newcomer to the defensive side of the ball Tony Walker, Chris Woycke, Jerry Storm and Ken Darby. Because of great pursuits, they managed to force 4 fumbles, 2 of which were recovered and intercepted 1 pass with a total of 3 turnovers. The Offense was led by Junior QB Neil Dougherty who had fine protection by Matt Baer, Paul Barry, Keith Fulmer and Todd Shaffer. Neil Dougherty was accurate, hitting the rece1v1ng corps of Keith Valerius, Mike Beerman and Joe McCullough. Carlos Collins scored the first TD of the game with a nice run. Also adding TDs were Keith Valerius, Jody Smith and Lonnie Blackley. The Big Moe won 35-6 and looked forward to their next ODDOnent. o I

The next step for the Crusaders was a passing scrimmage against Woodward. This would be a real test for the DB crew. With the exception of a few breakdowns, the "D" managed to give up only one TD on a 14-yard pass reception. Standouts on the defensive side of the ball were Todd Ille, Chad Whitaker and Brad Hindersman putting a lot of pressure and acquiring several sacks. The "D" gave up 9 first downs and only gave up 34 yards on the ground and 120 yards in the air for a total of 163 yards. Bie Moe's defense was all over the field forcing one turnover. Moeller's Offense moved the ball easily, but with the 10-play rule, it hal ted Moeller several times from scoring. But the Big Moe took the field in the second half and on their first drive, they marched down the field and capped it off with a 2-yard run by Junior QB Neil Dougherty. That was when the seconds took over and on their first series, an interception run back for a TD was Woodward's second score. The 2's were backed up against a rock and a hard place now down 13-7 but came back with Sophomore QB Jeff Raussen taking control with the help of Adam Adkins who had 5 rushes for .33 yards and a TD for 3 yards with Doug Burwinkle adding the extra point and winning the gall game 14-13. Some of the Big Moe's individual statistics were Carlos Collins who rushed 5 times for 45 yards leading the backs in rushing; QB Neil Dougherty was 16-25 hitting Asbrock, Valerius, Beerman and Currin. The leading receiver was Chris Asbrock with 8 catches for 93 yards.

Now for Moeller's real challenge. A full go-all-out scrimmage with a much improved Middletown team. Moeller struck first with excellent blocking by the line for Carlos Collins to break a 62 yarder with an exceptional downfield block by Paul Barry with Doug Burwinkle adding the extra point. The First-Team "D" held the Middies scoreless for all 3 quarters with exceptional play by Dan Buckley with 2 backs. Others playing exceptionally well were Ardell Barkley with an interception and Brad Hindersman forcing a fumble which Brian Zelina recovered. Then the Moeller Offense scored on a 19-yard run with Doug Burwinkle adding the extra point, making it 14-0. Moeller's one's managed to put a final drive together with Carlos Collins capping it off with a 3-yard run making it 20-0 and time for the two's to take over. The second offense fluttered which didn't help the "D" all that much. Middletown scored on a run which the "D" forced a fumble but it was recovered by the Middies to make it 20-6. Middletown then scored again on a 29-yard TD reception making it 20-12. On the offensive side of the ball, Matt Birrell came back into action at 100%, making 3 catches for 45 yards. Others with pass receptions were Keith Valerius who caught 1 pass for 20 yards and kept up a steady pace of receptions and Carlos Collins on a screen pass that went for 7 yards. Overall, the Coaches were happy with Moe's scrimmages, commenting on the constant and steady improvement of the team. The Moeller Crusaders will play for the first time against neighborhood rival, Sycamore. So come out and support the Crusaders at Galbraith Field on August 25th.

1989 Iron Man Contest Once again the Moeller Football Team conducted it's annual Iron Man Weight-lifting Contest. Every year at the end of the school year, the football players are tested in several lifts (bench press, squat, and power cleans). The total weight lifted in all three lifts is computed and a target goal is set for each player. For example, a player that has a combined lift of 750 pounds in June might be asked to get a combined lift of 780 pounds to make Iron Man. Right before group workouts start in July. the players are retested in the Iron Man Contest. The following is a list of the players that made Iron Man in 1989. Baseball State Champs Congratulations to Mike Cameron Baseball and the 1989 State Crusaders Champions. The captured the crown by defeating Upper Arlington 12-4 on June 4th. Adam Hyzdu, Brian Hindersman and David Bell led the charge in the Championship Game. Hyzdu opened the scoring with a booming first inning homerun to put the Crusaders ahead to stay. Hindersman who pitched a complete game in the semi-finals against Mentor, pitched 4-2/3 innings of relief to pick up the victory. He also had a couple of hits including a hit with the bases loaded in the second. Bell turned in several outstanding defensive plays as well as hitting a towering drive off the fence. Mike Olexa also contributed two hits to the winning cause. Moeller finished the season with a record of 26-6 which is the same record of Moeller's first State Baseball Champions back in 1972. Congratulations to all players, coaches, managers and scorekeepers for giving all at Moeller an exciting Championship Baseba 11 Season.

Food, Glorious Food "Two-a-days" - that is a term . that conjures up a lot of mixed emotions among football players and their families. It is the time when most of the hard. grueling physical work and preparation for the upcoming season is completed. At Moeller. the players come in at 7:30 AM and leave around 5:00 PM. During those hours, there is a lot of running, hitting and meetings. It is a day filled with activity with little time for rest and relaxation. It is similar to the NFL pre-season training camps. The one area of leisure time provided for the players is the lunch provided for them by the parents. Every year the Captains' Parents organize the "two-a-day" lunches for over 100 athletes and coaches.. NFL training tables never had it so good. Dozens of Mothers and Fathers volunteer their time spending hours and hours in preparation. Car washes and other fund raisers go on all Spring and Summer raising money for the Summer Lunch Program. Each year. it seems that the parents take on the challenge of trying to do more and more for the players. The Captains's Parents that have organized this year's lunch program are Elaine and Bob Birrell, Joan and Jack Crable. Shelly and Mike Hyzdu. Bob and Dottie Meyer. and Jan and John Shaffer. Only their sons can truly give them thanks for a job well done. On the last day of the "Two-a-days. the players present their mothers with a rose in appreciation for the sacrifices made during this time. To the Captains' Parents and all of the other parents that came in and helped out - THANKS! And another big round of "thanks-you's" go to the many businesses that donated food and supplies for the lunch program.

QUIGLEY WINS SKEET TITLE Two-time world skeet shooting champion George Quigley, Jr. of Kenwood (Moeller Class of 1987) was named All-American after capturing the u.s. Collegiate Skeet Title at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. Quigley, a junior at Xavier University, set a record by hitting 198 out of 200 clay targets in the combined American and Olympic skeet events. The Olin Corporation, manufacturer of Winchester Ammunition, gave a $1,000 scholarship to xu in Quigley's name. A total of 65 schools and 250 shooters tool< part in the tournament.

Congratulations for a fine Track Season to Greg Neumann. Greg did not place in the state meet, but he ends the season with two vaults, one indoors and one outside, over 13'6... He is the G.C.L. Championt the District Runner-up and 4th in the Southwest Region.

• On Saturday, September 2 of this Fall, Moeller will play in the Buddy LaRosa High School Football Classic. The Crusaders will take on the Colerain Cardinals in what has become a classic match-up of area teams. The first game of the day will feature Oak Hills High School taking on Covington Catholic at 12:00 noon. In the second game, at 3:00 PM, Moeller and Colerain play. The third game pits Fairfield against North Hills High School from Pittsburgh, Pa. at 6:00 PM. In the final game of the Classic, Elder's Panthers meet Aliquippa High School of Aliquippa, Pa. This game starts at 9:00 PM. All four games will be played at Riverfront Stadium. A student ticket for all four games will cost only $8.00. Adult tickets for the four-game series will be $12.00. Tickets will go on sale this comdng August. We ask that you support this event which will be a very special occasion for the schools involved, their athletes, and for all of Cincinnati.

Brian Bonham received the Distinquished Athlete Award at Moeller. The award is presented by the u.s. Marine Corps. Steve Busse was named Ohio Male Swimmer of the Year by the State Swimming Coaches Association. Steve was a State Champion in both the 50 and 100 meter freestyle. Next year. Steve will attend the University of Minnesota on a swimming scholarship.

Miscellaneous Moeller High School Athletic Director, Jim Lippincott, has announced the appointments of Dick Beerman as Assistant Athletic Director and Tim Schira as Head Track Coach. Dick Beerman is a 21-year teaching and coaching veteran of Purcell and Moeller. He graduated from Purcell in 1956 where he later served as Assistant Principal. Dick has been at Moeller since 1976 teaching in the Math Department and coaching a variety of sports. Most recently, he has been the in-house Swimming and Diving Coordinator. Dick will be Moeller's Sports Information Director and will assist in the day-to-day running of the Athletic Department. Dick replaces Bob Tull who resigned as Assistant A.D. to pursue business interests. Bob will remain at Moeller as a teacher and assistant football coach.

Tim Schira will take over the duties of Head Track Coach for the 1990 season. Tim has been at Moeller since 1984 as a teacher and assistant track and football coach. He graduated from Moeller in 1978 and from U.C. in 1982. While at Moeller, Tim was a football and track student. He was a defensive back on the 1976 and 1977 State and National Championship Teams. In 1978, Tim was Moeller's Most Valuable Runner holding or sharing five school records. While at u.c., Tim was Captain of the 1981 Football Bearcats. Schira replaced Forrest Brandt who has been Moeller's Head Track Coach for the past two seasons. Forrest stepped down as head track coach due to conflicts with his work schedule. Coach Brandt is a reading specialist for Hamilton Country assigned to Moeller and St. Gabriels.

Sports camps big success Moeller High School has been a busy place this summer. School let out on June 7th. On the following Monday. June 12. the All-Sports Camp started. Coach Mike Cameron and Coach Paul Smith along with a number of student counselors hosted a whopping 280 grade school athletes for two weeks. Organization at its finest was evident as the future Crusaders were put through their paces. The following week over 100 boys from grades 6-9 came in for Football Camp. Eight Moeller football coaches supervised flag football and taught Moeller's offensive and defensive techniques. During the week of July 1014. Moeller's Basketball Camp entertained over 60 hoopsters. Coach Ragland and his staff enjoyed another fine camp and boys in grades 7-9 learned the Moeller version of 'round ball'· The week of July 17-21 introduced the first-ever FUNdamentals Camp. Over 100 boys in grades 2-6 came in for instruction in Basketball. Football. Soccer. Track and Wrestling. Varsity coaches in all these sports were involved in making this a fun and educational week.

This issue marks the last issue of the Moeller Football Newsletter for the 1988-1989 year. The first issue of the 1989-1990 year will come out next week after the Crusader's opening game with Sycamore. Moeller wins in OT, 31-28 St. Ignatius awaits in final The Crusaders advanced to the State Championship game Saturday in a thrilling 31-28 victory over Lima Senior at Dayton's Welcome Stadium. The victory came in the third overtime on a 28-yard field goal by Junior Terry Knecht. on 4th and 1 from the 11. Neither team scored in the first quarter, and Lima scored once in the second quarter to lead 7-0 at halftime. The score came on a 5-yard run by Larmondo Watts and the extra point was good. Throughout the first half. the Crusader offense struggled to move the ball, hurting themselves with their own mistakes. Moeller finally got untracked in the 3rd period with an 80-yard. seven-play drive. capped off by a Hyzdu 3-yard run. Knecht's extra point was good to tie the score 7-7. Late in the 3rd period. the Crusaders were trapped inside their own one-yard line. only to drive 99 yards in 18 plays and score on a 7-yard run by Jody Smith.

With 3:55 remaining in the game. Lima drove 67 yards in plays. scoring with one minute remaining on a 2-yard run by Watts. With the score 14-14 at the end of regulation. both teams scored in the first overtime from their 20-yard line. First Lima on a 20-yard run and then Moeller on a 1-yard run by Hyzdu. The second overtime was identical with Lima scoring on a 7-yard run by Watts and the Crusaders scoring on a 2-yard run by Hyzdu. Finally, in the 3rd OT. the Crusader defense stopped Lima and took the ball over at the 20. Advancing to the 11. the field goal unit was called in and Knecht did the job. The final score: Moeller 31. Lima 28. The State Championship game will be played Sunday at Ohio State against Cleveland St. Ignatius, rated #1 in the Nation by USA TODAY.

CRUSADERS IN COLLEGIATE FOOTBALL RANKS

Steve Broughton '88 and classmate Don Feldhaus '88 have been impact players in both their seasons down in Murray, Kentucky with the Murray Sta~e Racers. Scott Davis '88 is the #3 QB for the Dayton Flyers. Scott has seen brief action this season, completing 2 of 3 passes for ~4 yards. The Flyers are once aga1n in the playoffs. Paul Hopewell '88 continues to be haunted by yet another fairly serious injury. As in his rookie year at Minnesota last season, Paul, after an outstanding first four or five games, has suffered a seasonending injury. Offensive linemen from the Class of 1988, Greg Huntington, Tom Thiel and Rick Schulte, are continuing to play key roles at Penn State, Holy Cross and Western Kentucky respectively. As might be expected when one reviews the graduates of 1989, the key word is "red shirted. " This is the role of Mike Nicholas at North Carolina State and Jack Thrush with the Ohio State Buckeyes. It is understood, also, that Chris Jenkins after beginning the year on the active roster for the Montana "Grizzlies" has been placed on the "injury-red shirted" status. John Fitzpatrick '89 has pleased the Murray State staff with his solid credentials. Casey Tucker '89 is enjoying his new home in Muncie, Indiana with the Ball State Cardinals and apparently the feeling is mutual. 89'ers Casey Fisher Cour '88 F.B. MVP), Kevin Henderson and Jason Griffis are now serving with distinction in the ranks of the Wittenberg program in Springfield, Ohio. Kevin sends his special thanks to Coaches Straub and Lippincott for the 'education' he received from them as a Varsity Crusader. It has provided him with a unique edge in the battle for college playing time.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Crusader Varsity Footballers can point with pride to the fact that 31 of their number are maintaining a quality point ranking in the top half of their respective classes. Five Senior footballers can point with pride to a ranking in the top 10~ of their class. The Junior Class can boost six teammates of similar ranking. Moeller is extremely proud of the classroom work of all of it's students. These young men sacrifice many. valuable primetime hours of study time to achieve their athletic goals. But that does not prevent a very high,percentage of these athletes from demonstrating their outstanding gifts in the classroom as well.

CROSS COUNTRY Mike Brewer - Aiming National Championships

Moeller Junior Mike Brewer completed his high school season on Saturday, November 4, by posting an outstanding 29th place in the State Championships in Columbus, Ohio. This represented the highest finish ever by a Moeller runner. On week later, Mike took 8th place in the Ohio District Qualifier for the National High School Championships in Lancaster, Ohio. This performance qualifies him for the Regional Qualifier this weekend, November 18, in Lexington, Kentucky. A top twenty performance at the Regionals, a very realistic goal, will earn Mike a trip to Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana for the National Championships.

Number One versus Number One The Crusaders closed out their season Sunday, November 26th coming up just short in a thrilling champi ship game at Ohio State Stadium. When the smoke had cleared, the score read Cleveland St. Ignatius 34, Moeller 28 and it was actually even closer than that. The two big guns, Moeller's Adam Hyzdu and Ignatius' Joe Pickens took to the air frequently putting on an a r al display unmatched in State Championship play. Ignatius scored first on a deep pass from Pickens to Ruddy. The extra point was good and Ignatius led 7-0. Moeller came back after two unsuccessful drives by both teams to score on a 64-yard bomb from Hyzdu to TE Chris Asbrock. That tied the score at 7. Ignatius scored once more in the first quarter, this time on an 11-yard run by Kennedy. After receiving the ball, the Crusaders opened the s~~ond period by capping off a J-play drive with a 7-yard r~n 0y Hyzdu which was set up by a 52-yard pass to Joe Currin. Then Hyzdu engineered a 76yard, 9-play drive to put the Crusaders ahead 21-14 at halftime. The score came on a 6yard run by Junior Carlos Collins.

After Moeller failed to move the ball on their first possession of the second half, St. Ignatius struck quickly. After a 3-play drive, Pickens tossed a 49-yard TD pass to Ruddy to tie the game again at 21-21. With 11:26 remaining in the game, the Wi~dcats took the lead on a 1-yerÂˇd run by Brian Spear, after a 4-play, 34-yard drive. fhe drive was set up by a 41-~ard punt return from Pete Fitzpatrick. The scoreboard read Ignatius 28, Moeller 21. After the Moeller drive was stopped at the Wildcat 35, Ignatius drove 65 yards in 6 plays, scoring on a 23-yard pass from Pickens to Jaekin. This proved to be the winning score. The Crusaders, however, not laying down, scored again on an 8-yard pass from Hyzdu to Keith Valerius, making the final score Ignatius 34, Moeller 28. Eleven State Game Rxecords were set in the game including total points C62), completions CHyzdu 21) and pass yardage CHyzdu 347). Congratulations on a great season, Crusaders.
