Moeller was ranked No. 1 in The Enquirer's coaches poll going into the game. Aiken placed all of its starters in double figures and played excellent team defense. Moeller's Bobby Brannen had a big first half, scoring 23, but the Falcons defense - which had 16 steals - slowed him down in the second, holding him to 10 points. Aiken improved to 5-1, and Moeller dropped to 3-1.

Four summers before University of Cincinnati basketball coach Bob Huggins offered Bobby Brannen a scholarship to bring his 6-foot-8, 225-pound frame to Clifton, a 14-year-old green-eyed boy from Reading gathered himself at mid-court inside an empty, nearly silent gymnasium in Columbus. He cradled the ball in his right arm and took off in a loping stride toward the basket. He accelerated, leaped and stretched. His fingertips slipped above the rim; he slammed the ball through with what authority he had left. Ronnie Wegman, who now feeds Brannen from the point-guard position at Moeller High, yelled his approval. "I was in shock - I couldn't believe I finally dunked one," said Brannen, who was 6-2 at the time. "Up until then,. I had clanged 'em or pinned 'em against the rim. That one, I got just right It felt great."

Bobby Brannen has taken his game up a notch. As a result, the Moeller junior is having an impact on the area high school basketball scene. Brannen, a 6-foot-8 center, spent two weeks last July. at the L.A. Gear Basketball Camp in Los Angeles. The camp, run by former Nike executive Sonny Vaccaro, was started as a rival to the Nike Camp, which draws college basketball's top recruits. Brannen played well enough in Los Angeles, said Moeller coach Carl Kremer, that Division I college coaches are now recruiting him. "Bobby's stock went up the most this summer," Kremer said. "When he came back to school, you could see how much he developed physically. He is much stronger and has more confidence in himself." Brannen is averaging 19.6 points and 9.2 rebounds per game while shooting 60.6 percent from the field. His performances have carried Moeller to a 7-2 record, 4-0 in the Greater Catholic League South Division. He scored 15 fourth-quarter points and finished with 28 in rallying the Crusaders to an 78-61 victory over Kettering Alter Dec. 11. He also had 23 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter, of Moeller's 80-67 victory over St. Xavier Dec. 18. At the Las Vegas Holiday Tournament last. month, he scored a career-high 30 points against Merced, Calif., making all 13 of his shots from the field. "Bobby is in such great condition that he has a wearing effect on players," Kremer said. "His best , quarter always seems to be the fourth quarter." Last season, Brannen averaged 17 points and eight rebounds as a sophomore. He paired with 6-7 senior Dan Maehlman, who averaged 15 points, to

form an front line. "Not having Dan around has made it a lot different on me," Brannen said. "I can't go one-on-one inside anymore, because we don't have another big guy. Plus, he was a great passer. The toughest thing for me has been getting double- and tripleteamed this year." To compensate, Moeller's perimeter players are shooting three-pointers, making an average of eight per game. Kremer said Brannen must work on his outside shot to become a more complete player. "A lot of players reach their potential in high school, but he'll continue to get better."

University of Cincinnati basketball fans will have to wait another week to find out whether Dan Fortson will attend UC next year. But Moeller High School senior Bobby Brannen is expected to join the Bearcats' fold Wednesday, the first day of the week-long early signing period. Brannen, a 6-foot-8 forward ranked among the nation's top 55 players by Hoop Scoop magazine, said Monday he expects to sign his letter of intent at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Moeller gym. He made an oral commitment last July to avoid being pestered by college recruiters.
"I haven't been bothered by any· · body," Brannen said. On the other hand, Fortson - a 6-9 post player from Pittsburgh Shaler High School - still is trying to choose between UC and Michigan. "He's going to stretch 1t until the last day (Nov. 17)," ·said J . O. Stright, who runs the Amateur Athletic Union program where FoFtson played .in Pittsburgh. "He's still a little confused." Because Fortson has failed to meet the NCAA's test-score requirements, he is not allowed to make an official visit, but Stright said Fortson will visit both UC and Michigan on his own this weekend. Fortson is ranked among the na-
tion's top 10 players by Hoop Scoop. After Brannen signs, UC will have one scholarship to offer for next season, and it will go to Fortson if he wants it. Brannen, who played tight end for the Moeller football team last year, gave up football this fall so he could concentrate on basketball. He said he has missed being part of Moeller's city championship football team, but the time has been well spent. "I've been lifting (weights) a lot and we play in open gym twice a week," Brannen said. "I also run three times a week." Brannen averaged 21 points and 10 rebounds per game last season.

It is a long way from Dury Park to the 18,865 red-clad screamers in Freedom Hall. · It is an equally long way from that dank gym in Columbus to the 13,176-seat rockhouse called "The Shoe" on the UC campus. It is not far at all between the city's two top players. They are head and shoulders above the rest. Their teams don't meet during the regular season, but if things go according to form, they will meet in the playoffs. Brannen and Johnson don't give off the hauteur of the spoiled, pampered athlete. Off-the-court, their feet are firmly planted. Debra Brannen and Fannie Johnson, Bobby's and Eric's moms, have seen to it. Being older children in big famili~s probably has something to do With It, too. Johnson is the oldest of six, Brannen the second-oldest of seven, five of them girls. Baby Matt is three. "I figure it might be a while before I have another player like Bobby," says Moeller coach Carl Kremer, smiling. "I've already said, 'I'd like to stay in coaching until Matt comes along.' " One more year of high school. That's all Brannen and Johnson have. After that, the age of innocence ends. But for now, for one last, big, beautiful go-round, Bran.nen and Johnson are prep stars. Mother of s-even, third-shift packager at a chemical plant, Debr~ Brannen strives to give her children something she didn't feel she was given: opportunity. It costs $3,000 a year to go to Moeller, and there are no such things as full or partial rides. It's tough enough to feed seven kids, but when one of them eats a steak and "three or four" baked potatoes at one sitting (when he's at Burger King, it's three Whoppers and a large order of fries), it's safe to say Brannen's board exceeds his tuition. He eats a dozen raw eggs a day - just the whites - trying to bulk up. "I think Bobby looked somet~es at how we struggled," said his mother, '_'and he figured, 'If they can do this, I can do that.' He's always been a hard worker.'' Bobby works at his coach's basketball camp, works at Catholic Youth Organization games and delivers pizzas on Sundav.
"People see Bobby ·on TV all the time - they· don't know he's out delivering pizzas," says coach Kremer. "He wanted to go here and so did his family, even after his dad lost his job. His dad was offered a job if (Bobby) would go to a certain high school. But they weren't going to sell their kid." Brannen's dad, Bob, was a fme athlete at Reading High. He was a dominating center in basketball He is employed now and has neve; _wavered as a major, positive influence in his son's life. "I've got this picture of him in high school in the lane, getting re~dy to score," says Bobby. "I athletic ability from tJ?nk I get him. Everything he did, he did on his own. He didn't get any support. He saw to it that I did." The younger Brannen still rem~Jllbers the time he was going to qmt Pee Wee football after the first few days. His dad wouldn't let him. Not because his dad was pushy; he just didn't want his son to renege on a commitment. Football used to be Bobby's sport. He was a linebacker for Reading and he loved to hit. Then in the seventh grade, he broke hi~ leg in a game against Sharonville. "It tore the growth plate " he said. "I had a bunch of problems because of it. The other leg developed a stress fracture. It is a long way from Dury Park to the 18,865 red-clad screamers in Freedom Hall. It is an equally long way from that dank gym in Columbus to the 13,176-seat rockhouse called "The Shoe" on the UC campus. It ·is not far at all between the 1 city's two top players. They are head and shoulders above the rest. Their teams don't meet during the regular season, but if things go according to form, they will meet in the playoffs. Brannen and Johnson don't give off the hauteur of the spoiled, pampered athlete. Off-the-court, their feet are firmly planted. Debra Brannen and Fannie Johnson, Bobby's and Eric's moms, have seen to it. . . Being older children in big famIhes probably has something to do with it, too. Johnson is the oldest of six, Brannen the second-oldest of seven, five of them girls. Baby Matt is three. "I figure it might be a while before I have another player like Bobby," says Moeller coach Carl Kremer, smiling. "I've already said, 'I'd like to stay in coaching until Matt comes along.' " One more year of high school. That's all Brannen and Johnson have. Mter that, the age of innocence ends. But for now, for one last, big, beautiful go-round, Brannen and Johnson are prep stars. Mother of s·even, third-shift packager at a chemical plant, Debr~ Brannen strives to give her children something she didn't feel she was given: opportunity. It costs $3,000 a year to go to Moeller, and there are no such things as full or partial rides. It's tough enough to feed seven kids, but when one of them eats a steak and "three or four" baked potatoes at one sitting (when he's at Burger King, it's three Whoppers and a large order of fries), it's safe to say Brannen's board exceeds his tuition. He eats a dozen raw eggs a day - just the whites - trying to bulk up. . "I think Bobby looked sometl!lles at how we struggled," said his mother, ''and he figured 'If they can do this, I can do that.' He's always been a hard worker." Bobby works at his coach's basketball camp, works at Catholic Youth Organization games and delivers pizzas on Sundav.
"People see Bobby on TV all the time - they· don't know he's out delivering pizzas," says coach Kremer. "He wanted to go here and so did his family, even after his dad lost his job. His dad was offered a job if (Bobby) would go to a certain high school. But they weren't going to sell their kid.'' Brannen's dad, Bob, was a fine athlete at Reading High. He was a dominating center in basketball He is employed now and has neve~ _wavered as a major, positive influence in his son's life. "I've got this picture of him in high school in the lane, getting re~dy to score," says Bobby. "I tJ:ink I get my athletic ability from him. Everything he did, he did on his own. He didn't get any support. He saw to it that I did." The younger Brannen still rem~mbers the time he was going to qUit Pee Wee football after the first few days. His dad wouldn't let him. Not because his dad was • pushy; he just didn't want his son to renege on a commitment. Football used to be Bobby's sport. He was a linebacker for Reading and he loved to hit. Then in the seventh grade, he broke hi~ leg in a game against Sharonville. "It tore the growth plate " he said. "I had a bunch of problems because of it. The other leg developed a stress fracture. DIVISION IV • Cincinnati Country Day (17-3): A small but talented team, the Indians were state semifinalists last season and are out to earn another trip to Columbus. Jamel Kings leads the balanced attack with Jim Hilleary and Andre Barkley also playing integral parts for the Miami Valley League champions. • Summit Country Day (15-5): An up-and-coming squad, the Silver Knights rally around sophomore center D.J. Christian along with Cary Daniel, Tom O'Brien and Chris Gramme!. The Silver Knights forced CCD to overtime before losing Friday nig~t.
Teams to watch • Aiken (12-8): A junior-dominated squad, the Falcons have been one of the surprise teams in Cincinnati. Led by Senneca Herring (15.0) and Shamahn McBride (16.5 points), Aiken appears to have the talent to win the sectional but must get by Taft and Elder along the way. • Moeller (15-5): Champions of the Greater Catholic League $outh Division, the Crusaders have the inside game with Bobby Brannen and the outside shooting of Mike Bell, J. D. Heilmann and Joe Schimpf. • Princeton (12-8): Led by Rick Asher, Gordon Elliott and J.T. Roberts, the Vikings have shown they are capable of playing with any team- they knocked off Middletown. They could be the darkhorse in the Oxford tournament. • Fairfield (9-11): The Indians have been a hard-luck team this year, losing seven games by three points or less. However, following Fairfield's upset of highly regarded Colerain, the Indians are now a team that appears ready to play with the best. No. 3-seeded Middletown, their first-round sectional tournament opponent, will have to be at its best to eliminate the Indians. DIVISION II • Purcell Marian (8-11): After struggling during the early season, the Cavaliers have come on strong, finishing third in the tough GCL North Division. Led by Bobby Kelley
after playing a predominantly Division I schedule. DIVISION Ill McNicholas (6-13): Don't let the record deceive you. The Rockets play a Division 1-11 schedule and play a tough man-to-man defense that gives opponents trouble. Look for Craig Trapp and gang to emerge as the leaders during the sectional DIVISION IV Mariemont (15-5): Two of the Warriors' five losses came with the entire team suspended early in the season. Since that time, Mariemont has been impressive, · winning 13 of 16 games, including a triumph over Wyoming.
Players to watch • Damon Flint, Woodward (28.7): Named to the McDonald's All-American team, the 6-5 Bulldog senior is a dominant player who has the supporting cast as Woodward seeks another state crown. • Chris Kingsbury, Hamilton (21.9): Considered one of the most competitive players in Ohio, the Big Blue senior was named to the McDonald's All-American team. • D.J. Bosse, Colerain (22.8): A force in the middle for the Cardinals, his leadership will determine how far the Cardinals advance. • Bobby Brannen, Moeller (20.2): Only a junior, this 6-7 center is the key for the vastly underrated Crusaders. • Derrick Johnson, CAPE (22.3): An excellent outside shooter, Johnson will also have to get it done underneath for the Crusaders. • J.J. Lucas, Middletown (18.7): The team's leading scorer, he also averages 11.7 rebounds. • Jamel King, Cincinnati Country Day (20.5): A projected Division IV all-state player, King does it all for the underrated Indians. • Tony Wright, North College Hill (20.3): An excellent outside shooter, Wright's ability and leadership could carry the Trojans far in the Division Ill tournament. • Darius Johnson, Winton Woods (18.4):

Moeller High's Bobby Brannen(~, 215 pounds) became the University of Cincinnati's first commitment for the 1994-95 season when he announced his intentions to attend UC on July 27. Brannen chose to become a Bearcat because he couldn't find a reason to leave home. UC won the recruiting battle over Michigan, Notre Dame, Kentucky and Virginia. Brannen led his team to its first Greater Catholic League title in 23 years and can now focus on his senior year, working towards his dream- a state title. The senior forward~ who averaged 21 points and 10 rebounds last season, is rated by most recruiting analysts in the nation's top 40 and as the second best player in Ohio. The following is Brannen's press confer路. ence in its entirety. Coach Carl Kremer: "Bobby Brannen has been recruited by every major school in the country, The secretari,es here at Moeller have told me that no athlete that they can recall has ever had as much mail. As you all know, we have had quite a few good athletes go to Moeller over the years. I just want to compliment Bobby and his family. I think they have handled this whole process very well. They have been very thorough when looking at each of the schools and also very fair to every school. At no time have they ever led a school along for the purpose of stroking their own egos. I am very proud that I have been associated with the family. It is unusual for a player to commit this early but I want it to be known that Bobby did investigate each school. He made unofficial visits to Ohio State, Indiana, Notre Dame, Michigan and. Cincinnati. He narrowed it down to his final four choices of Michigan, Cincinnati, Notre Dame and Virginia. This is a very proud day for me and our school so without further delay I will let Bobby make his announcement." . Brannen: "First, I would like to thank everyone for showing up, my friends, my family and everybody else. To tell you the truth, I knew Sunday Guly 25) where I was路 going so I called Coach Kremer to ask him to hold a press conference for me. Before I announce I would first like to take the time to thank my parents who have had to put up with the recruiting process and also my coach. I just want to say that I have made my decision on what I thought was best for me, where I would get the most playing time and where I felt most comfortable. I would like to thank each of the schools that recruited me and I'm sorry I could only pick one but I decided to stay at home and attend the University of Cincinnati and be a Bearcat. I hope that it is a wise decision. This way my parents will get to see me play. UC has a great program. Coach (Bob) Huggins is a great Coach. . Media: How crazy had things become i11 the last few weeks? Brannen: "Well it got to the point where, even when I went down to North Carolina I got three or four calls just sitting in my room. That kind of stuff was beginning to become bothersome." Media: Was part of it so you could enjoy your senior year without this hanging over your head? Brannen: "Definitely." Media: Does Coach Huggins know about this yet? Brannen: "Oh yeah. This is kind of how it happened. I came home Sunday and set up a little visit with Coach Huggins. I went down to talk to him for a couple of hours and after that conversation I knew where I was going but I didn't tell him. Instead, I came home and told my parents and my coach. I then called Coach Huggins back and told him." Media: Was your family the most important reason for selecting UC? Brannen: "That was one of the major reasons but UC has such a great program and coaching staff. Cincinnati is a great town. There are fantastic people here. This city has a lot to offer." Media: What did Coach Huggins say when you told him? Brannen: "He told me I made his day." Media: Were you aware that he has bee11 comi11g to your games si11ce you were a sophomore? 路 Brannen: "Yes I'm aware of that. Coach Huggins was really recruiting two kids from our class but he even showed up for a couple of my games down in North Carolina when I wasn't even playing due to injuries and that made an impression on me." Media: What do yqu like about UC's style of play and how do you think you'll fit in there? Brannen: "Well, they play an up~ tempo style. You have to be able to get out on the floor and guard somebody. I believe that style of play will help me get to the next level. You have to be able to play defense to get to the next level.'' BSD: Did UC's recruiting of Danny Fortson play a factor in choosi11g UC? Brannen: "Danny Fortson is a different type of player than I am so it really didn't matter to me. He is more of a back-to-the-basket type player. I really didn't see us playing the same position.'' . BSD: Did the fact that he is another big man botlter you at all? Brannen: "No. With UC's style of play, they have to play nine or 10 guys regularly because of how much they run." BSD: Because of the potential depth
that UC will have, do you worry about being just another talented player and not getting 路 the chance to play a lot? Brannen; "I hope to play a lot. I mean, I'm just going to do whatever I can for the program and work as hard as I can to put myself in a position to play.'' BSD: You talked about how Coach Huggins started to come out and see you as a sophomore. Was UC's continued commitment to recruit you a major factor? Bra~nen: "It was important but there were other schools that did things like that. Notre Dame was as big as anyone when it came to commitment. I really just wanted to stay home. There was no reason I could find to leave when it came right down to it.'' BSD: Did you inform the other schools before this press collference? Brannen: "I didn't personally but Coach Kremer did. I'll call each of the coaches later to thank them for their interest."

NBA-style basketball in Ohio high school play? No way! Any hopes for the slam-and-jam,· swing-on-the-rim action will be erased later this month when the . Ohio High School Athletic Associa- · tion adopt> recommended rule changes for the 1993-94 season. "The grasping the rim rule will be more restrictive," veteran official Owen Donohue said. "There will be no NBA action because of the possibility of a player getting hurt." Another concern was the potential of bending rims or breaking glass backboards, which occasionally occurs in college and professional play. This change is 1 of 10 to be voted on by the OHSAA. Among others: • The elimination of the oneand-one bonus free throw. A new rule would award two free throws after the seventh foul in each half, rather than the bonus. "Most of the coaches are in favor of that change," Donohue said. "It will cut down on a lot of the fouling near the end of the game." • The requiring of all players to wear a protective mouth piece. • A new foul lane rule when shooting free throws. "No player will be allowed in the foul lane until the ball touches the backboard or rim," Donohue said.

"All team substitutions must now be made as a group and not one at a time," Donohue said. "This will prevent coaches from sending in players one at a time in· a free throw shooting situation which is disruptive to the shooter." Donohue expects the following suggested rule changes to fail. They include: • Making the 3-point field goal line closer than 19-feet, 9-inches for girls. • Allowing pregame dunking. • Expanding the overtime period from three to four minutes. The OHSAA will also take a look at prohibiting school barids from playing while the clock is running or a player is shooting a free throw.

Senior guard Ron Wegmann added 11 points and seven assists, while junior guard Brad Keating also handed out seven assists. The Crusaders rolled to their 28th consecutive home victory spanning three seasons. The Crusaders improved to 17-2 on the season, a school record for regular-season victories. High school seniors Bobby Brannen of Moeller and Dan Fortson of Pittsburgh Shaler will be named Gatorade players of the year in their respective states. A 6-foot-8 .center, Brannen led the Crusaders to an 18-2 record and The' Enquirer's poll championship, averaging 24 points and 13 rebounds. He is 16 points short of tying the Moeller career record of 1,330 set by Byron Larkin.· A three-year starter, Brannen is the first player to be named the Player of the Year in the Greater Catholic League three successive seasons. Fortson, a 6-foot-9 center, is averaging 29.6 points and 14.6 rebounds while leading Shaler to a 21-3 record; Both players are now eligible for Gatorade's national team that will be announced· in April. The players are also eligible for the Gatorade national player of the year.

On a recent road trip to IncUana, Moeller High School basketball coach Carl Kremer glanced across the team van at his players before stopping at senior forward Chris DeBow. One player was sleeping, the three behind him were listening to music and next to them a player worked a Nintendo GameBoy. And then there was DeBow. "The rest of our team is listening to music or whatever," said Kremer, "and there's Chris, looklng out the window counting the deer and daydreaming about hunting." DeBow, a 6-foot-6, 200-pound forward is averaging 14 points and seven rebounds for the 14-2 Crusaders, who are ranked second in The Post's DiVision HI coaches poll and on the verge of a second straight Greater Catholic League south division title. When he's not leading the Crusaders on the court, Debow prefers hooking catfish to nailing three-pointers and bagging deer to beating Elder. "I don't like cities, I don't like smog and I lJ.ate malls. If I stay inside too long I get a headache," said DeBow, 17, who lives in Mai
OUTDOORS AND RECREATION neville. "I enjoy the challenge and peaceful¡ ness of outdoors sports." Stories of DeBow's outdoors interests, like the deer watching episode, abound at Moeller. He has been known to pull up for preseason workouts with a buck tied to the trunk of his car. Or strip off his camouflage coveralls, kick off his hunting boots and start shooting baskets with the team. In the Moeller media guide, he lists becoming a pro fisherman as one of his goals. "Chris will be the first one in at 8 a.m. to shoot baskets," said Kremer, "and then he'll tear out of here to go chase squirrels." DeBow enjoys catfis.Qing during the summer and deer hunting - with bows and guns - during the fall before basketball begins. His t.rpphies include a 33-pound shovelhead catfish and a six-point buck. DeBow said some of his friends kid him about his outdoors interests, but he thinks young people spend too much time inside taking the outdoors for granted. "Most of my friends don't know a thing about the outdoors and haven't bothered to

; For upcoming Moeller opponents, here's a *cary scouting report: • The Crusaders' 6-foot-8 Bobby Brannen is *ood - very good - and La Salle placed as much emphasis on defending him as any pru~ent team could. They still were buried, 75-57, Frid~y night at Moeller in a battle for control of the top of the Greater Catholic League's South Division. It wasn't that La Salle didn't play good defense - it did. It wasn't that .it had a miserable shooting night - for a half, the Lancers shot it about as well as possible from the perimeter. The problem was that, if necessary, Moeller can play much more as a team than most people realize. : "I think La Salle's whole game plan was to make the other guys on our team beat them, and those other guys stepped up and did," said Moeller coach Carl Kremer. : Kremer felt that La Salle - with its packedjn, collapsing 2-3 zone - paid more attention to stopping Brannen than any other opponent had all season. The result was that Moeller had seven players score - all posting between 8 and 13 points. Crusader guards Brad Keating, ,Ron Wegmann, Brian Young and Travis Smith benefited from an open perimeter to hit 10-of'20 3-point tries in the game. . La Salle's coaching staff had scouted Moeller ·in its Jan. 14th victory at Elder. "Anytime you have someone like Brannen, you have to give up. so many shots," said La Salle coach Dan 'Fleming. "At Elder, he and (Moeller's 6-6 .forward Chris) DeBow scored 50 of their 67 'points, so you have to try and take that away. ,So tonight, he showed that he's pretty good that way." ; For a half, La Salle's strategy worked well. :The Lancers were hot from the outside - in the first half, the team made 8-of-13 from ;3-point range, including 5-of-6 by junior Todd ·Smiley - and led by one, 34-33, at halftime. Moeller seized control early in the third 'period, however. The·Crusaders went on a 9-3 'run to start the quarter. La Salle temporarily ·stopped the bleeding, but with a 44-41 lead with 4:00 left in the quarter, Moeller again 'went crazy. Six different players scored the ' Crusaders' next six baskets, and Moeller fin- ' ished the quarter with a 17-6 run to pull away for good. • "Moeller just showed their heart," said La Salle's Fleming. "Our guys honestly backed down, and if you do that, Moeller will kill you." ' The game was a match up between two of the city's top five teams - No.2 La Salle and No.5 Moeller, but defending last. year's GCLS title is what is foremost on the minds of Moeller's players. : "We knew this was an important stepping stone towards that goal," said Moeller's Smith, one of six seniors who plays regularly for Moeller. "This puts everyone else two games back in the league.
