Your centre layout should facilitate a natural flow, helping children to move easily between different activity areas. This not only helps children transition smoothly from one activity to another but helps with organisation and planning. Consider indoor-outdoor flow, and the flow from one zone to another.
Divide your learning space into distinct areas for activities, such as reading, group play, eating, art or rest. Once each area has its purpose, equip it with ageappropriate resources that encourage exploration, creativity or relaxation. Make sure there is also an adult sized chair or couch for educators or families. Use zoning techniques, such as rugs, low bookshelves, colours or textures to create definition and flow. Zones help children understand the purpose of each area and encourage focused engagement.
Flow through to a sensory play zone to support babies, toddlers and preschoolers as they process information through touch, smell, taste, sight and hearing. Adding a sensory play table, den or room will stimulate exploration and sensory development.
Don’t forget the flow of natural elements to promote calmness and enhance creativity. Consider wide flowing doorways, windows and strategically placed mirrors to maximise the flow of natural light. Natural elements, such as indoor plants also brings the outdoors in and connects children to the natural world.
