A Newport councillor says it’s vital that the right infrastructure is in place in the town to cope with new houses being built.

Newport residents have been warned that fraudsters are targeting them in phone calls by posing as court enforcement officers and bailiffs. The scammers claim to be acting on behalf of Telford & Wrekin Council – and even those without a debt are being targeted. The council says it has had reports of the crime actively taking place in the borough. The scam involves fraudsters claiming they are owed money – and demanding funds be transferred directly into a bank account. Councillor Rae Evans, cabinet member for finance, governance and customer services, warned: “Scammers are becoming more and more sophisticated and coming up with new ways to steal money, so it’s vital you stay vigilant. If it feels suspicious, don’t be afraid to end the call.” Anyone with fears over suspicious calls can contact Telford & Wrekin Council on 01952 383838.

Alpacas in the pink at family charity event Friends and family were joined by two special guests as they come together to raise money for a national breast cancer charity. The Clarke family, from Newport, held a fundraising event in their back garden, welcoming two alpacas from Knightley Alpaca Trekking. Teddy and Carlos hail from Peru and are based on the

the farm in Stafford. But instead of working on the farm they called in at the Clarke household in support of the Wear it Pink campaign on Saturday. Heather Clarke was diagnosed with breast cancer two and a half years ago and has undergone three successful operations to remove the tumour. She and her husband

Mike wanted to set up a fundraiser to raise money for Breast Cancer Now which helps fund life-saving research. Mike said it went “exceptionally well” and it was estimated that up to £600 would be raised once the money was all in. Donate at justgiving.com/fund raising/heather-clarke18.

Families are being urged to mark November 25 in their diaries to enjoy some festive fun. That’s the date when Newport will officially switch on its Christmas lights. The lights will be turned on by the winner of the Newport Town Council’s Annual Christmas Card competition, the Town Mayor Councillor Ian Perry and Father Christmas. The official switch-on of the lights will take place at 6pm in the town square and will be preceded by the Christmas Parade which leaves the Town Council offices at the Guildhall at around 5.50pm. The parade will be led by the Salvation Army Band, followed by Santa and his sleigh, the Mayor, competition winner and cast members from Nova Panto’s Beauty & the Beast. St Nicholas Church will host its traditional Christmas Carol service at 6.30pm and there will be a Christmas markets run by Newport Events Company.

A developer confirmed at the end of last week that it has bought a piece of land earmarked for more than 200 homes. Tilia Homes has completed a deal for an 18-acre site off Station Road in Newport. The site is allocated in the Telford & Wrekin local plan and has outline planning permission for the homes, as well as public open space and children’s play areas. It is planned to build 215 homes on the site. Councillor Thomas Janke said he supported, in principle, the building of new homes but more investment was needed in the town to alleviate any potential pressures. “It is very important that local residents are listened to during the planning phase of this development and indeed any future developments,” he said. “Like many other areas, local services can be put under strain from an increase in local population. “So we need to ensure local infrastructure like parking is well supported and invested in, including safe active travel links into and around Newport. “I do support more homes being built, there is a national shortfall of houses andI look forward to engaging with the planning application.” Tilia Homes said it would also be making significant investment into local infrastructure.
