COUNCIL SETS OUT POLICE PRIORITIES

Officers need to tackle drug dealers, speeders and anti-social behaviour in the town

Tackling drug dealing on the streets, speeding and anti-social behaviour should be top priorities for the police in Bridgnorth, town councillors have said.

The town council welcomed community support officers to its latest meeting and heard details of initiatives that are taking place. Shropshire councillor Kirstie Hurst-Knight praised officers for their work in clamping down on speeding through the town. “They are really tackling the problem and the ‘1,2,3 action’ of education, warning, then vehicle seizure seems to be working,” Councillor Hurst-Knight said. Town councillors agreed their priorities for the police in the town were tackling the problems of drugs being dealt, particularly in residential areas, speeding vehicles and anti-social behaviour in the town centre in the evenings. Councillor Alec Chetta said drug dealing in residential streets was making people feel uncomfortable and unsafe in their own homes. Councillor Julia Buckley said that residents were worried not only about the anti-social behaviour that drug dealing brought but also that the young people of the town would be sucked into using drugs. She said there were also concerns from older residents in the days leading up to Halloween. The community support officers said they had been into schools talking about Halloween issues.

999 crews unable to save man taken ill

A man has died after suffering a medical episode while travelling between Bridgnorth and Wolverhampton. Emergency services attended the scene at 4.30pm on Sunday after receiving reports of a medical emergency near Bridgnorth Garden Centre, on Bridgnorth Road at Shipley. Crews including two ambulances, a paramedic officer and an air ambulance from Cosford were called to the scene. The road was closed. A West Midlands ambulance spokesman said crews had been unable to save the elderly man and he was confirmed dead at the scene.

Warm welcome for Rishi as new PM

Bridgnorth’s MP Philip Dunne has warmly welcomed the arrival of Rishi Sunak as prime minister, saying he was confident he would govern the country with “integrity, professionalism and accountability”. Mr Dunne, who backed Mr Sunak both this summer and last week, said he was pleased to see “the best candidate” elected so swiftly. He said: “I am confident that Rishi will be backed by MPs to deliver his programme in Parliament.” Mr Dunne added: “He is best placed to rebuild trust in the Conservative Party.” l Opinion – Page 8

KA Horses Equestrian Centre owner, Kerry Parker. “Everyone is really looking forward to taking part.” The clear round competition will run on Saturday and is open to all ages and abilities. Booking is necessary to take part, and can be done by calling the centre on 07442 095049.

Highways chiefs have blamed inflation for increases in charges which will take place at council car parks in Bridgnorth and the rest of the county from next week. Shropshire Council officials have confirmed that the “small increases” will come into effect on Monday. Richard Marshall, Shropshire Council cabinet member, said: “Due to an increase in the rate of inflation and the cost of managing and maintaining our car parks and onstreet parking areas, there will be small increases to some of our parking charges.” l Defend – Page 2
