The Royal School transitioned from a small independent school to become a thriving, energetic and outward-looking school community in a very short space of time. The Royal School is an allthrough (four to 19) day and state boarding school. The student population increased dramatically, going from about 400 students in 2014 to over 1,480 in 2021. However, throughout the conversion to a Free School, staff enhanced the values and ethos as an independent school. Children’s experiences are further augmented through an extended day programme of some 170 weekly wider enrichment activities. With the arrival of the scheduled Ofsted inspection in education and the boarding provision, the school now has external validation of the vision in practice.

Staff support students to gain academic qualifications, but also provide them with life skills, employability skills, and volunteering opportunities, ensuring they are relevant to the needs and aspirations of all of our students. Learning is extended beyond the classroom with the ‘Enrichment and Enhancement’ program through which students can get involved in wider activities such as sport, Duke of Edinburgh, music, drama, and Christian Union. New year, new opportunities at school
After the excitement of the Christmas festivities we all need something to look forward to in the New Year.
Luckily, students at Wolverhampton Grammar School have the ideal pick-me-up waiting for them. WGS proudly offers one of the most varied and plentiful selection of extra-curricular clubs and activities of all the schools in the area.
Interests Students can indulge and explore a huge number of interests, ranging from calligraphy and cooking to photography, Pokémon Go, BBC Young Reporter and Big Band. Many of these opportunities, including Medics Society, student newspaper and the Green Power project, are run by Sixth Formers; providing extra opportunities for leadership, mentoring and enterprise. What can WGS students look forward to in 2023? With extra-curricular trips firmly back in the calendar, there is plenty to tempt those seeking adventure! Perhaps a sports and cultural tour to South Africa? A French trip to Château du Broutel in Northern France, a visit to the First World War battlefield sites at Ypres and the Somme,

or even a chance to volunteer at a school in Morocco? This academic year has already seen three such successful international trips. The spectacular view of the Northern Lights on the Land of Science tour to Iceland will surely be an experience difficult to surpass! This much anticipated trip offered the chance to see some of the natural phenomena studied across all year groups in science subjects. Whether a discussion about the migration and evolution of whales in biology, walking on a melting gla-
cier and learning about the impacts of carbon dioxide on our planet in chemistry or seeing and appreciating the physics of ionised particles from the sun interacting with the Earth’s magnetic field, it was a truly memorable trip for everyone involved. The sports department has been busy with two European tours. Boys and girls took part in a Portugal Football Development Tour which provided a golden opportunity to train in world class facilities, interact with elite players and learn
from highly qualified coaches. Several competitive fixtures against local teams were enjoyed, as well as a full stadium tour of Porto’s ground, Estádio do Dragão. Further north, 29 Year 8 and 9 girls travelled to Valkenburg in the Netherlands for a Hockey and Netball tour. They enjoyed coaching masterclasses and games against local Dutch sides, including playing at the incredible facilities of the Horst Hockey Club. When not training hard there was plenty of fun leisure time spent tobogganing,

bowling and in the pancake house! On both tours there was time to appreciate local culture. The creative industries are the fastest growing sector of the economy, employing more than three million people and contributing more than £100 billion to the national economy. Yet a quarter of all creative industries struggle to recruit staff, with a third saying it’s because they lack the right skills. For every performer on stage or screen there are eight people working behind the scenes – marketing and producing shows; making costumes, applying make-up, wigs and special effects; creating sets and props; operating cameras, sound and lighting. And in many of these roles, unlike the dancers, singers and musicians on stage, there is a shortage of trained people. That is what BOA Stage & Screen Production Academy is seeking to address. The staff team comprises dedicated teachers and experienced film, TV and theatre professionals who provide high quality vocational training both at the Academy and on industry-wide placements. In 2019, Ofsted commended the academy, saying: “Sixth-form provision is a strength. It helps students to be successful, independent learners”. NSCG recognises that results matter to young people and their parents, and as such are exceptionally proud to say their A-level results are record-breaking! Following two years of Covid disruption, the NSCG ‘Class of 2022’ bucked the national trend to pick up results that exceeded all national benchmarks with a 99.1% A-level pass rate of which 87% of A-level entries achieved A* – C grades. Achieving three or more substan-
tial qualifications is key to unlocking progression on to university and into a good career and last year NSCG sent 1,220 students to 102 universities – more than any other college in Staffordshire. Within the extensive range of vocational programmes also available, last year NSCG celebrated a pass rate of 98.4% from those who completed a BTEC Extended Diploma with 49% of students achieving grades DDD or above – equivalent to three ‘A’ grades at A-level.
