NHS MAY FUND GP HUB BUSES

Health bosses say they won’t rule out providing buses to get patients to a planned super GP hub. Proposals for the Shrewsbury hub, which would become home to six of the town’s GP practices, have prompted concerns from councillors and residents over transport to the site. Shropshire Council has said it will not pay for bus routes to any new hub, but a meeting of the authority’s health scrutiny committee has been told the service could potentially be provided by the local NHS. Gareth Robinson, director of delivery and transformation at NHS Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin Integrated Care System (ICS), said he could neither rule it in, or out, and said any decision could only be taken after finding a definite location for the proposal. Initially the plan had been to build the hub on Oteley Road in Meole Brace, however a search for other potential locations is now under way after concerns were raised about the Meole Brace site. While speaking to the committee Mr Robinson also highlighted comments from a local GP, who said that practices in the town have had to turn down 20 trainee GPs because

of lack of space to bring them in. He said that although the hub would not entirely solve the problem, it could help. Speaking on the transport concerns he said: “In terms of reduced travel, again it is right at the heart of this but until we know the location it is really difficult for me to say what I can do and what I cannot do as part of the development. “The council have been very clear that there will be no funding for bus services. Actually I haven’t been clear to say there won’t be funding from the ICS for bus services, but I have been clear to say that I won’t say there definitely will be either. Again, until we know the location we cannot work this out.” Mr Robinson said they had heard of the experiences of a similar project in Crewe, where a bus service was set up, but it was closed after six months because people were not using it. Hospital chiefs have confirmed their decision to take part in a pilot scheme designed to tackle the ongoing ambulance handover crisis. Shrewsbury & Telford Hospital NHS Trust has been plagued by lengthy handover delays for more than a year. The situation means patients frequently waiting for hours in the back of ambulances for a space in A&E. A new joint pilot with West Midlands Ambulance service will set up a dedicated area at RSH where patients can wait with trained staff – freeing up the ambulance to respond to emergencies. n Plea – Page 3

A heritage society insists a ‘masterplan’ is needed for a controversial project to build a hotel, or face ‘pleasing no-one and offending everyone’. Morris Property has shelved plans to build an 83-bed Travelodge on Barker Street car park in Shrewsbury town centre, right next to the Grade II-listed Rowley’s House and Mansion. The developer withdrew the planning application and has gone back to the drawing board to work on a revised proposal. Shrewsbury Civic Society has welcomed the move, and asked to be consulted so there isn’t a “hotchpotch that pleases no-one”. They want a “masterplan” drawn up.

Some of top gardeners in the “town of flowers” have been honoured at an awards ceremony. Mayor Elisabeth Roberts presented Shrewsbury Town Council’s annual Town of Flowers Awards with residents and businesses invited to the Mayor’s Parlour at Riggs Hall for an awards presentation. Competitors were judged in a range of categories including best residential large and small front gardens, best floral container and best commercial premises. Entries were judged in July by members of the Shrewsbury in Bloom Group. Among the winners were The Woodman Inn in Coton Hill, which won the commercial properties category. Alex selected to fight seat

The Liberal Democrats have selected Bowbrook councillor and NHS campaigner Alex Wagner to stand for Shrewsbury and Atcham at the next general election. Mr Wagner won his seat on the county council last year at the age of just 20 with 1,001 votes, beating the second placed Conservative candidate Arlinda Ballcaj, who received 322 votes after the incumbent Peter Adams who chose not to stand. On his selection by the party he said: “Shropshire is a wonder-

ful part of the world. I was born at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital in the part of town I now serve. People here deserve the very best, yet often have the worst services in the country. Our NHS services are in the fourth-division, our roads are crumbling, and it feels like we don’t have a voice at Westminster. “There needs to be a local choice on the ballot paper next election who is dedicated to banging the drum to get Shrewsbury a fair deal. I’m putting myself forward to do just that.”

Parade marks end of link with submarine

The parade commenced at Shrewsbury Castle and the crew marched through the town Salopians showed their support for the crew of a Navy submarine at a parade through town. The crew of HMS Talent marched through Shrewsbury town centre as they returned the Freedom of the Rights of the town. The parade saw the end of a long-standing affiliation between Shrewsbury and HMS Talent which commenced in 1989, with the Freedom of the Town being granted in 2002. Following a Defence Integrated Review in 2021, the decision was taken to decommission HMS Talent from May 20 this year.

The parade commenced at Shrewsbury Castle, and the crew marched through the town to the Square, where His Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of Shropshire, Mrs Anna Turner, took the salute, with the Mayor Elisabeth Roberts, past mayors and other civic dignitaries in attendance. Councillor Roberts said: “It is with a sense of sadness that we welcomed members of HMS Talent to the town for the last time as the Freedom of the Rights of the Town are returned. Over the years, we have enjoyed strong links with the submarine and its crew, and we

will miss that association. We wish all those crew the best as they are transferred to other vessels.” HMS Talent returned the Freedom of the Town, which had been a gift given 20 years ago by the people and Mayor of Shrewsbury, and has been proudly held ever since, displayed inside the submarine next to the Officers’ Mess. A spokesman for HMS Talent added: “Today marked the end of what has been a long, rich and fruitful relationship between the town of Shrewsbury and the submarine HMS Talent. It is an affiliation that dates back to 1989.”

Plea to health secretary Campaign groups have joined forces to write to the new health secretary Steve Barclay to provide more funds to support the discharge of patients from hospital. Shropshire Needs Ambulances and Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin Defend Our NHS wrote to the minister 24 hours after it was confirmed that 22 out of 23 ambulances serving the county were in queues outside A&Es at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and Telford’s

Princess Royal Hospital. They say the system is in ‘gridlock’ and claim patients are being seriously harmed or are dying as a direct result. The letter urges the health secretary to lobby the chancellor for a reinstatement of the social care levy increase in National Insurance in order to release the gridlock in the emergency healthcare system.The groups have welcomed the latest initiative taken by West

Midlands Ambulance Service for patients to be ‘cohorted’ – to be cared for by paramedics working in a designated space within the hospital, to enable other paramedics to return to responding to emergency calls. But they say it is mitigation, not finding a solution to the crisis. Gill George, chairwoman of Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin Defend Our NHS, said: “This is a stopgap measure.”

Green campaigners visit town A nationwide bus tour to raise awareness of climate and ecological crisis paid a visit to Shrewsbury. The Shropshire Extinction Rebellion group welcomed the Change is Now Bus Tour to the town’s Quarry park. As part of the day local Extinction Rebellion supporters sprang into action, organising outreach sessions and activities for children. Natasha Guryeva, spokesperson for the group, said it also provided a way to interest people in the movement to demand action and to join with thousands of others taking action in spring 2023. She said: “Shropshire is frequently suffering from bad flooding which will only get worse with the climate change and the council’s persistence to build on flood plains. “The state of the River Severn is in decline due to the activities of industrial farming and the failure of Severn Trent to treat sewage which really adds insult to injury when it comes to flooding.”

Planning permission delay call is made Campaigners involved in a row over land wrongfully sold for £550,000 are calling for a planning permission extension to be delayed. Permission for homes on land within Greenfields Recreation Ground in Shrewsbury is due to expire next week. It is not currently on an agenda for any planning committee meetings. The land was sold by Shrewsbury Town Council to CSE Developments in 2017, and has been subject of a legal battle which is

due to end up in the Supreme Court this December. The land should have been kept for community use. In June, following an independent review conducted by Michael Redfern KC, the town council “unreservedly apologised” over the sale, and vowed to try and return the land to the community. Greenfields Community Group have now raised concerns over a planning revocation document from 2018 in which a senior planning officer said: “The land was not and is not considered to be part of

Greenfields Recreation Ground or public open space”. They also disagree with correspondence from the developer, who said: “I have grown up in Greenfields. For as long as I can remember, this piece of land has never been maintained as parkland.” Dr Peter Day, who has led the legal challenge, said: “Questions need to be asked. This information needs to be reviewed. The judicial review said it was not possible to come to the conclusion that it wasn’t public land.”

Homes plan is criticised A councillor says a 150-home development is “in the wrong place” and implored planners to make sure traffic issues are resolved before anything goes ahead. Bellway Homes has submitted plans for homes in Meole Brace in Shrewsbury after winning a planning appeal last December. The developer wants to build the one, two, three and four-bedroom houses, which would include 37 “affordable” properties, on a patch of land between Home Bargains and the park and ride next to Meole Brace Retail Park. There were a number of objections to the original proposal on grounds including noise, air pollution, traffic congestion, poor provisions for pedestrian and cyclists and over-development as well as risks to a historic Neolithic site. Meole councillor Bernie Bentick said: “There were multiple reasons for objection in the original application, many of which are still relevant. If this development proceeds, it will be vital to ensure that traffic issues are resolved. I still don’t accept this proposed housing development. It’s in the wrong place and on far too large a scale for the area. Residents are crying out for real investment in doctors, schools and roads and this new estate would put further strain on our already creaking infrastructure. Additionally, links with other communities are poor.”

Query on pharmacies in GP super hub plan Report by Megan Howe A councillor has questioned what will happen to the adjoining pharmacies of GP practices if they are relocated to the ‘super hub’. The issue was raised at a meeting of Shropshire Council’s scrutiny committee on Monday. Gareth Robinson, director of delivery and transformation at NHS Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin Integrated Care System (ICS), presented an update on the development of the Shrewsbury hub and answered questions from committee members. Councillor Heather Kidd asked what the impact will be on local pharmacies if the six GP surgeries are re-located as part of the plan. Those surgeries involved in the hub plans are The Beeches Medical Practice, Belvidere Medical Practice, Claremont Bank Surgery, Marden Medical Practice, Marysville Medical Practice and South Hermitage Surgery. Under the proposal they would leave their current premises, and all be based at one new location – the site of which is yet to be confirmed. She said that the majority of money that adjoining pharmacies make is through prescriptions and

A life-saving heart defibrillator has been donated to a youth club which is used by hundreds of young people. The medical device was presented to the SYA – formerly known as Shropshire Youth Association – in Upton Lane, Shrewsbury, after staff at local company Hartshorne Group raised cash as part of a Healthy Heart Campaign. The defibrillator can be used to restart a person’s heart in an emergency and it will be available to the community within the immediate area, which includes a scout and guide facility and a BMX park. Richard Parkes, chief executive officer of the SYA, said: “We are located close to a recreational park that is popular with young people, so we are very grateful to Hartshorne Group. “Young people can sometimes have undiagnosed heart problems, so it is reassuring to know we have access to a defibrillator.” SYA supports 100 youth clubs and organisations throughout Shropshire, offering age-appropriate facilities, used by 5,000 children and young people weekly, from school Year 6 and above. “We are a registered charity that offers a warm and welcoming environment staffed by experienced youth workers, where young people can talk to appropriate adults who will listen and offer support,” added Mr Parkes.

Members of a group who meet up at a parkrun say it is helping them to cope with the effects of cancer. The 5kYourWay group is a community initiative linked to parkrun for anyone affected by cancer. They meet on the last Saturday of each month at the event in the Quarry, Shrewsbury. Sarah Mawhinney, one of the founders, said: “The Shrewsbury 5kYourWay group has now been going for over a year and is growing from strength to strength. Shrewsbury parkrun have been very supportive and welcoming to the group and there are always lots of positive comments. “The group has six ambassadors. Three of these have been through a

cancer diagnosis and treatment themselves. “The ambassadors are there to support people who come along, either walking or running with them and then going for coffee afterwards to continue the friendship and conversation. There is no pressure to do all the 5k, do what you can and join us for coffee afterwards.” The group meets on the last Saturday of every month at 8.45am near the bandstand in the Quarry park, Shrewsbury, ready for a 9am parkrun start. Police sign up to stop hare coursing The county’s police force has joined a partnership in an effort to stop hare coursing. West Mercia Police have been joined by the South Staffordshire force in signing up to the UK wide, ‘Operation Galileo’. The operation is primarily an intelligence sharing platform, allowing police to target key areas to prevent and detect crime where those responsible cross force boundaries. Back in August, the Country Land and Business Association welcomed significant new changes that were made to the legislation surrounding the practice of Hare Coursing. The new measures have allowed law enforcement to strengthen using new maximum penalties, of unlimited fines and up to six months in prison. Two new criminal offences were also added to the Police Crime Sentencing and Courts Act 2022 which will give extra powers to the courts.

Crime up by fifth in a year Crime in West Mercia is up nearly 20 per cent year on year, official figures have revealed. The latest data from the Office for National Statistics shows rises in a host of offences for the year ending in June – compared to the previous 12 months. Sexual offences, violence and robbery are all up significantly, as well as a huge rise in public order offences – particularly impacted by the ongoing relaxation of Covid restrictions. Overall crime was up by 19 per cent, higher than the England average of 12 per cent. There were falls in some areas, notably drugs offences which were down by 22 per cent, along with bicycle theft which fell by 16 per cent. For West Mercia violence was up by 20 per cent, sexual offences by 17 per cent, robbery by 18 per cent, and theft by 21 per cent. Residential burglaries were also up by six per cent, with non-residential burglaries increasing by 15 per cent. In total across West Mercia there were 91,276 offences in the year up to June – 39,549 of which were categorised as ‘violence against a person’. In Dyfed-Powys overall crime was up by 19 per cent – and 22 per cent for violent offences. Sexual offences were up by 27 per cent. Forces recorded 196,889 of sexual offences in the year to June, with 4,083 of those in West Mercia. Reacting to the figures, Diana Fawcett, chief executive at the charity Victim Support, said: “This huge increase in sexual violence reported to the police is seriously alarming and a stark reminder that the Government needs to get a grip on staggeringly low conviction rates and horrendous court delays. “Things simply can’t go on like this – women deserve better.”

Tasty new cereal venture launched A Shropshire man has become a cereal entrepreneur after creating a new breakfast food. Hammond Brown, of Telford, has been mixing his own muesli for years after failing to find one he liked in shops. He has now launched his own brand after completing a start-up course. “I was dissatisfied with the quality of the mainstream muesli available in supermarkets,” said Hammond.

PCC ‘disappointed’ The county’s police commissioner says he is “disappointed” at the rise in crime shown by the latest government figures. John Campion, Police and Crime Commissioner for West Mercia, was speaking after data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed an overall rise in crime of 19 per cent when the 12 months up to June is compared with the year before. The figures included rises in a number of offences – including sexual offences and violent offences. Mr Campion said that although he was not pleased at the figures it was important to bear in mind the time scale cover-

ing the data – which was being compared to levels of crime while Covid restrictions were still in place. He said: “I am disappointed that the latest ONS crime data shows an increase in crime but it is important to bear in mind that this is only a snapshot in time. “There has been a rise in overall crime nationally, which is to be expected following the aftermath of the Covid pandemic and the associated lockdowns.” Mr Campion said he was focused on making sure that policing in the county reflects the concerns of its residents.

14 new county additions to pub guide By Mark Andrews The latest edition of a prestigious guide to the nation’s best pubs features 14 new entries from across Shropshire. A total of 51 pubs across the county feature in 2023 Good Beer Guide, produced by the Campaign for Real Ale. Bridgnorth does particularly well, with eight pubs featured in the 50th edition of the book. It is beaten only by Shrewsbury, which has 13 pubs listed. But the guide notes that the county has lost more than a quarter of its breweries since the last edition was published at the end of 2021. The latest edition shows the county has 14 breweries, with five of them being lost over the past year. Most notable of these was Wood Brewery in Wistanstow, which had recently celebrated its 40th anniversary. The Corvedale brewery, based at the Sun Inn at Corfton near Craven Arms, has also suspended brewing due to the recent sale of the pub, although it is expected to resume soon. The guide also features 33 pubs and nine breweries in Mid Wales. The popular Three Tuns Inn in Bishop’s Castle, one of the ‘Famous Four’ brewing pubs to feature in the first edition of The Good Beer Guide, makes a welcome return for 2023

In Bridgnorth, the Black Horse, Fosters Arms and George are all new for 2023, joining The Black Boy, Golden Lion, Old Castle, Railwayman’s Arms and Shakespeare Inn which all retain their place from last year.

The 17th century Gaskell Arms Hotel in Much Wenlock is a new addition for 2023, with mention made of its beamed ceilings, open fires and bay windows. It joins the George & Dragon which also appeared in the 2022 guide. The Apple Tree at Onibury, which returned its original use as a pub after spending many years as a shop,

is praised for its quirky appearance, and emphasis on beer and conversation. The Kings Yard in Shifnal is typical of the growing trend towards micropubs, small bars often created in former shop units. The guide notes that two of the handpulls are dedicated to Wye Valley beers, with at least one dark beer also available.

The Anvil Inn and Plough Inn, also in Shifnal, have kept their listings from last year. At Kinlet, on the road between Bridgnorth and Kidderminster, the 17th century Eagle & Serpent is praised for welcoming atmosphere and log fire. The Red Lion in Market Drayton retains its place. Over in the Shropshire Hills, the Green Dragon at Little Stretton is another new entry. “The pub’s L-shaped bar has a comfortable and welcoming feel, and the pleasant dining areas are always popular,” says the guide. The Yew Tree in Church Stretton retains its place. The 17th century Blue Boar and 14th century Church Inn are new entries for Ludlow, the latter having received a comprehensive refurbishment. Ludlow Brewing Co’s tap house in the old railway shed keeps its place, along with the Charlton Arms and Rose & Crown. Shrewsbury has 13 pubs in the guide, with Brunning & Price’s Armoury and J D Wetherspoon’s Shrewsbury Hotel making the guide. The riverside Armoury in Victoria Quay, which originally was an armoury, is praised for its excellent food and tasting notes, while the guide notes the number of nooks and crannies in the Shrewsbury Hotel.

Roman camp is protected The site of a temporary Roman camp that could have housed 10,000 soldiers has been granted protected status by heritage guardians. Historic England has confirmed that part of a field at Uffington will become a ‘Scheduled Monument’, owing to its archaeological importance. The designation comes despite the farmland being included in Shropshire Council’s Local Plan for potential development as an employment site. Shropshire Council has confirmed it has been notified of the scheduling but said no decision had been taken on whether it would continue with its inclusion in the local plan. Eddie West, Shropshire Council’s planning policy and strategy manager, said the issue would be discussed by planning inspectors at further hearings over the local plan next spring. Historic England says there is an expectation that scheduled monuments “will be handed on to future generations in much the same state that we have found them”. It says the camp is the fourth largest known of its kind in England, and adds that it is one of 18 sites, either in, or close to Wroxeter. The evidence shows it initially covered 16 hectares.

Ruth Ross will succeed Richard Sheehan when he retires from the role at the end of March after nearly 16 years with the organisation. Ruth, who joined the chamber in 2015, was appointed deputy chief executive earlier this year, having previously fulfilled a variety of roles including membership recruitment, skills and compliance, and director of business. She said: “I’m incredibly proud to have been given the opportunity to lead this fantastic team. “This is a challenging climate for our business community, but it is at times of economic struggle that the support and backing of a member organisation like Shropshire Chamber really comes into its own. “Collectively we can fight the county’s corner and lobby our decision-makers – and we will continue to listen to our members and partners to shape our services in a way which best meets their needs.

Firefighters had an animal audience when they rescued an unfortunate horse from a rather sticky situation. Gouchy the horse managed to get its front leg stuck after stepping on a trailer in Bridgnorth Road, Broseley, and firefighters were called to help the owners to free the helpless equine. Two fire appliances including the rescue tender raced from Bridgnorth and Wellington with an operations officer. A vet also attended the scene at about 6.20pm last Tuesday. Sending a vet is standard procedure with animal rescues. A spokesman for Bridgnorth Fire Station said: “Gouchy the horse had stepped on a trailer and managed to get his front leg stuck. “He was fit and well, but just couldn’t get himself free.” The vet was called on to sedate the large animal, which allowed the fire crews to use their Holmatro cutter and spreader to free the horse. The spokesman added that the crews had an animal audience while they worked their rescue magic. “Nice to see his horsey friends staying close to him to make sure he was ok while we helped him out of sticky situation,” said the spokesman.

Politicians are too quick to condemn fracking to history Too many of our politicians seem only too quick to condemn fracking to the dustbin of history without any convincing analysis which is particularly galling given the present energy crisis facing the UK. It’s oh so very easy to glibly say that instead of fracking there needs to be more investment in renewables – presumably wind and solar.

The simple truth which they do not mention is that the supply of electricity from renewables requires the wind to blow and the sun to shine which is not always the case of course. That is why National Grid have warned of possible power cuts in the New Year because of likely anti-cyclonic conditions which means the wind will not blow and shorter days with reduced sun-

I have been waiting since January 2021 for a routine eye operation lasting 20 minutes at a NHS hospital. In the interim I have had four in-person appointments of dubious purpose, except possibly to meet some administrative target. Each has specified an appointment with “Dr X or one of his team”. In the event I have never seen the great Dr X. Told at the last appointment that the operation would be in three months time (exactly what I was told in January 2021). I decided to research a local private hospital for the same operation. Prominent in their brochure was the beaming face of Dr X. This suggests to me that that the NHS

needs reform, including consultant employment conditions, not just money thrown at it, if it is to function efficiently. Certainly Dr X will not be a recipient of my cash to support his moonlighting lifestyle. The more talk there is of inflation, the more inflation there is. Six months ago, at my regular supermarket my favourite biscuits were £1, now they are £1.49. Similarly a £1 carton of fruit juice is now £1.49. Is it Ukraine, the value of the pound or just a straight forward bit of profiteering? There is no point in whining, we need to act, I’m writing to the Health Secretary and changing my supermarket. The British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS) issues the following advice on how best to reduce the risk of harming hedgehogs this bonfire night and has a three-step plan to try to ensure their safety: MOVE the materials to clear ground on the day they’re to be lit, then; CHECK the pile carefully just before striking that match, and finally; OFFER an escape route by

only lighting from one side. Hedgehogs tend to hide in the centre and bottom two feet of the bonfire, which should be checked by gently lifting the bonfire section by section with a pole or broom. Never use a spade or fork as these can stab them. Using a torch will help to see any signs of life. Also listen for a hissing sound, as this is the noise they make when disturbed. If a

hedgehog is found, take as much of the nest as you can with it and place in a high-sided cardboard box with plenty of newspaper, old towelling or straw. Food Hub charity is recruiting trustees By Dominic Robertson A charity which helps get food to families who need it is looking for new trustees. Since April 2016, Shrewsbury Food Hub has been collecting surplus food from supermarkets, manufacturers, and farms, and sharing it with local charities and community groups. The initiative helps save the groups money so they can do more with the funds they have. A spokesman for the food hub said: “We are a trusted voice in the local community with an excellent track record, and we are looking for new trustees to govern the charity as we seek to grow over the coming years. “After a strategic refresh in 2021, we are looking to appoint three new trustees to our board. Arctic char can be found in the local area

Remnants of Earth’s Ice Age There’s not so much I can write about the cold blooded members of the Salopian natural history at this time of the year; most being hunkered down to survive the coming winter. But there are a handful which are at their most vibrant and energetic now. Most fish have a spawning season in late spring and early summer, but salmon mostly spawn now, in October and November. As you may well have seen, the Shrewsbury weir is one of the best places in the country to see them leaping as they surge upstream to their breeding grounds. It has been a good year for these fish judging by the spectacle they have put on in the town centre these past weeks. But I am not going to talk about salmon this week, instead I’m opting for a species rarely spoken of in Shropshire, the Arctic char. They are in fact found in Ellerdine Lakes, near Telford, that being one of the only locations in England, save for the Lake District, to hold them. But for truly wild fish you’ll have to head to Scotland. They are breeding this month, with the males particularly resplendent in their red breeding ‘flush’. Char are much more cold-tolerant than our other native trout and salmon, allowing them to thrive in deep, cold post-glacial lakes as well as more fer-

ON THE WILDSIDE By Ben Waddams tile, shallower waters of Scottish and Irish lochs. Like their fellow salmonid the brown trout, char feature sea run populations and freshwater resident populations. Sea run char however, only occur in the northernmost part of their range; above 65 degrees latitude and not in the UK. There are around 340 separate Arctic char populations in the British Isles and they are often described as ‘remnants of the ice age’ perhaps because of their association with the Arctic and the fact that they (along with other species including trout and grayling) populated our waters soon after the glaciers retreated around 12,000 years ago. They arrived as sea-run char, and then subsequently lost their sea migratory tendencies, becoming freshwater residents. Brown trout are genetically very diverse and show a wide range of local adaptations but this is even more pronounced in char. We are of course still overcoming and building back after Covid and some of us still feel unable to return to our usual activities and ways of life. Capital gains in a US city of spacesuits and speakeasys Smithsonian Castle

The Capitol Building in Washington DC As shafts of fading autumn sun dance through a bank of clouds above the Washington Monument, my eyes are drawn eastward to the Statue of Freedom sitting high atop the Capitol Building. David, my affable guide from Wisconsin, points to the 19ft bronze female figure that embodies the founding spirit of the United States. “She faces east because the sun sets in the west,” he says. “So as long as she stands there the sun will never set on the face of freedom.” Symbolism pervades the US’s capital city, and no visit is complete without a tour – by foot, bike or bus – of the familiar landmarks that chart the story of a nation through narrative architecture. Most of them are centralised and relatively close together, so you can easily take in all the main monuments in one afternoon. My highlight is standing on the granite steps of the Lincoln Memorial, looking out on the shimmering

The museum is midway through a $1 billion refurbishment and the first completed section has just recently been unveiled to the public. The collection houses some remarkable items, from the Wright brothers’ Flyer, which completed the world’s first manned flight, to the Columbia command module that brought the original lunar astronauts back to earth. Neil Armstrong’s Apollo space suit is also on display. More than half of the 1,200 artefacts in the new section have never been exhibited before, including a full-sized X Wing fighter from the

The museum is free, and for that you can thank James Smithson, who died in 1829, after bequeathing $500,000 in his will to establish an institute in Washington that would promote the “increase and diffusion of knowledge”. He had one stipulation – that entry would be forever free. As well as the Air and Space Museum, I visit the National Archives – where the Declaration of Independence, Constitution and Bill of Rights sit side-by-side – and the National Museum of Natural History. I have the fortune of being able to combine another Smithsonian favourite – the American Art Museum – with a dining experience like no other. One night a year, the museum hosts the Embassy Chef Challenge – a charitable initiative that offers a unique opportunity to sample food from around the world, courtesy of the city’s 175 diplomatic missions. Outside of the Smithsonian In-

A bit more daunting are the steepling steps at the nearby corner of 36th Street and Prospect Street, where one of the most famous scenes from the 1973 horror movie The Exorcist was shot – an enjoyable way to end my break in DC.

I could have picked no better spot to watch the celebratory fireworks than my window-side table at the fabulous Japanese restaurant NaRa-Ya. On the northern side of the National Mall is the Peruvian gastro bar Pisco Y Nazca Ceviche, which

With its spectacular coastline, dense woodlands, beautiful dales and vast expanses of moorland, the North York Moors National Park could be just the ticket for some much-needed peace and quiet. A few miles west of Pickering, on the park’s southern boundary, is the pretty little village of Sinnington, which dates back to Anglo-Saxon times and is listed in the Domesday Book of 1086. The focal point of the village for more than 300 years has been its charming 18th century inn, the Fox & Hounds (thefoxandhoundsinn. co.uk), which has just undergone a

£1.25m refurbishment and is a prime spot to stay for exploring the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. The Grade II listed inn has 14 luxury bedrooms and an AA rosette-accredited restaurant. Our luxury cottage room was named Parr, in homage to the last of King Henry VIII’s wives, Catherine Parr, who once lived in the manor of Sinnington. The menu is mouth-watering – although, unusually in this day and age, there was nothing vegetarian on the menu. Head chef Fabien Hombourger does create a bespoke vegetarian menu for me with a goat’s cheese starter and a vegetable bake, followed by warm Parkin and ice cream for dessert. Happily, the next morning there is a vegetarian cooked breakfast

option, which sets me up for our subsequent day of exploring. This comprised a gentle walk round the lovely, quiet village of Sinnington, through which the River Severn meanders. We then drove about 12 miles through nearby Pickering to the bustling Saturday morning market at Malton. Then it was off to the spectacular and immense Castle Howard (castlehoward.co.uk), where both Brideshead Revisited and Bridgerton were filmed and learned that the colossal 145-room mansion is still home to some of the Howard family more than 300 years after the 3rd Earl of Carlisle, Charles Howard, began its construction in 1699. n Rooms at the Fox & Hounds start from £120 per night.

As temperatures drop and the nights draw in, winter can pose both a challenge and a danger for drivers.

Here are some top tips to help you drive more safely this winter…

Check your car

Preparation is key and one of the best things you can do is check over your car before winter sets in. Colder weather puts a greater strain on batteries, meaning they’re far more likely to struggle or fail at this time of year. So, if your battery is struggling to turn the car on, it might be time to replace it. Remember to check the fluid levels as well. When it comes to windscreen washer fluid, you shouldn’t use water on its own as this will struggle to clear windows in the winter months – instead, get a dedicated solution with antifreeze in it. Having tyres in good condition is especially important in winter, when the roads tend to be wet and grip levels are lower. Make sure they’re correctly inflated, with no signs of damage. Although 1.6mm is the legal tread minimum, we’d advise having plenty more than this over winter. You could also think about choosing winter tyres.

Turn your lights on

If you’ve only driven while the sun’s up in summer, it can be a shock when all of a sudden it’s close to dark by mid-afternoon. Being visible on the road is really important, so for starters it’s a good idea to make sure all lights and indicators are working on the vehicle (including fog lights). But crucially, remember to put your lights on at the start of every journey if it’s going to get darker. Even if your car has automatic lights fitted, don’t presume they’ve turned on. Also, all new cars have daytime running lights (they’re mandatory at the front, but not the rear), so you can falsely think you have your headlights on, even if no lights are illuminated at the rear. Visibility also extends to making sure your lights are clean – it’s worth wiping them every now and again – while never setting off if your windows are fogged up or still covered in ice or snow.

Keep your distance

Winter brings much less grip on the road, as temperatures fall and tarmac is more likely to be damp, etc. One of the best things you can do to improve your driving – irrespective of season, but particularly in winter – is to keep your distance on the road. Whether you’re on the motorway or around town, always ask yourself if the vehicle in front slams on its brakes, would you be able to stop in time? The larger the gap you have from the vehicle in front, the more likely you’ll be to stop before hitting it, particularly in winter when braking distances are extended.

Slow down when the temperature drops

As soon as the temperature drops to anywhere close to zero, you need to change your driving behaviour. You should avoid any harsh braking or turns of the wheel, as this could cause you to skid and lose control, and make sure you keep your speed down. Even if a road has been gritted, there may be patches that are still icy, so you should still be cautious. And even if the temperature has increased well above zero, there may be shaded patches that might not have thawed.

Volvo goes all-electric with XC40 SUV

Volvo has gone the Full Monty with their small XC40 leading the electric charge, if you pardon the pun.

The firm has confirmed it will be an electric-only car manufacturer by 2030 and will roll out several additional electric models in the coming years. The stylish Recharge is their first 100 per cent electric SUV, offering the usual Volvo refinement, and depending on the model, a claimed range of 261 miles. They are not cheap, this range starts at £45,750, but Volvo is a premium brand and you do get plenty for your money.

It is a stylish SUV looking very much like non-electric versions, with smart light clusters to front and rear and a choice of striking alloy wheels. It has a sleeker look and the front lights feature the now familiar ‘Thor’s Hammer’ design. It also features a discrete rear spoiler. Like other electric vehicles, the grille has been blanked out, rendering the car less attractive as a result. The interior is real premium quality and dominated by the nine-inch tablet style touchscreen and a 12-inch TFT display behind the smart multi-function steering wheel.

The central screen controls major functions and now features Google Maps, navigation, infotainment and smartphone connectivity. There are also a number of apps available. It has a real high-end feel with leather-style microtech powered seats, soft-touch finish and a minimalist approach to buttons and and dials. All models are well equipped, and standard kit includes two-zone climate control, cruise control, rear parking sensors, electric windows and door mirrors and a host of other goodies. This model adds 20-inch alloys, Sensus Connect with Premium Sound by Harman Kardon with Dolby Pro Logic II Surround Sound, powered boot, power-adjustable and heated front seats, adaptive cruise control, a panoramic sunroof and a 360-degree parking camera. Like most electric cars, acceleration is instant and the 231bhp on tap from the electric motor powers the car to 60mph in seven seconds. Pretty much hot-hatch territory. A fairly lengthy road trip put the claimed 256-mile range to the test, as well as recharging availability on the UK roads. On that particular journey, 200 miles might have been achievable. Hook up though, and it can be charged from 10 to 80 per cent capacity in around half an hour using a 150kW fast charger, if you can find one on the services, otherwise a full hit using the 11kW onboard

Rolls-Royce has revealed its first electric car with the Spectre – a sleek twodoor coupe that represents ‘the start of a bold new chapter’. Positioned as a spiritual successor to the Phantom Coupe, the Spectre was first announced last year, with RollsRoyce covering more than 1.5 million test miles since then, which the firm says simulates more than 400 years of use for a Rolls-Royce. Described as an ‘ultra-luxury electric super coupe’, the Spectre gets a particularly elegant silhouette, while the grille is the widest ever fitted to a Rolls-Royce, and is also ‘softly illuminated’ with 22 LEDs. Inside, the Spectre is available with ‘Starlight Doors’, which incorporate 4,796 LEDs that aim to give an impression of the night sky. Built around a specific ‘Architecture of Luxury’ platform, the Spectre is unrelated to parent company BMW’s electric cars, with the battery integrated into the structure of the car, enabling it to be 30% stiffer than any previous Rolls-Royce. A clever ‘planar suspension’ has also been developed to deliver the brand’s hallmark ‘magic carpet ride’. This includes decoupling anti-roll bars that help to keep the car stable over bumps, which can then recouple and stiffen the dampers when a corner is identified. Rolls-Royce says full technical details are ‘still being refined’, but the firm is expecting the Spectre to offer

an electric range of 320 miles. The powertrain is also set to deliver 577bhp and 900Nm of torque, allowing for a 0-60mph time of 4.4 seconds – figures that are comparable with the brand’s current V12 models. Torsten Müller-Ötvös, chief executive of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, said: “This incredible motor car, conceived from the very beginning as our first fully electric model, is silent, powerful and demonstrates how perfectly RollsRoyce is suited to electrification. “Spectre’s all-electric powertrain will ensure the marque’s sustained success and relevance while dramatically increasing the definition of each characteristic that makes a RollsRoyce a Rolls-Royce.” The Spectre will be positioned between the Cullinan and Phantom in the Rolls-Royce line-up, with prices starting from around £275,000. Orders are now open, with first deliveries expected by the end of 2023.

Shropshire duo earn places in Pears academy

Congress back on the agenda for next year The blue riband event of the Shropshire chess calendar will make a return in the new year – three years after it was last held. The 2023 Shropshire Chess Congress will be held at Wrekin Housing Trust’s headquarters in Telford over the weekend of January 6 to 8. It will be the first time the event has been held since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, and those behind the tournament will hope to attract a bumper entry, writes Peter Kitchen. First held in 2015, the congress regularly attracted well over 100 entries each year across multiple sections, including some of the nation’s top players. The 2016 open section was shared between three top British grandmasters – Keith Arkell, Danny Gormally and Mark Hebden. But it last took place in January 2020, with the pandemic and ongoing restrictions on large indoor gatherings putting paid to holding such a large-scale chess tournament since – until now. Already a trickle of entries have been received, and it is hoped many more will be received in the run-up to Christmas. There will be five rounds played from the Friday night to the Sunday afternoon at the Colliers Way venue, for all four sections. They include an Open section with a top prize of £300, which will also feature a trophy for the highest-placed Shropshire-based player. The Major will be for players with an ECF grade under 1950, the Intermediate for players graded under 1750 and a minor for those rated under 1500. Players will have one hour and 40 minutes of thinking time to make all of their moves in each game, with an increment of 10 seconds per move. Two talented Shropshire cricketers have been awarded places in Worcestershire’s academy, writes Ollie Westbury. Shrewsbury’s Harry Darley and Shifnal’s Jack Home are part of a 10-strong group selected for 202223. It is the first time pace bowler Darley (under-18s) has been selected for the academy, while Home (under-17s) is retained for another year. Elliot Wilson, academy director at Worcestershire, said : “Harry is a Shropshire player who has played on and off for Worcestershire for the past two summers. “He has been on the Shropshire satellite academy that Paul Pridgeon and Dave Manning have run for the past decade and more. “He was originally from Oswestry CC but moved to Shrewsbury CC in 2022. At the end of last winter, Harry tore an intercostal muscle, so his season didn’t really get started until mid-summer. “Harry finished the season strongly, and there are characteristics in him that we are excited about.” Josh Leach (under-16s), Seth Essenhigh (under-15s) and Alfie Higgins (under-14s) are also part of the academy for the first time. Allen dedicated his life to sport for over 70 years An Honorary Townsman of Wem who dedicated his life to sport has died at the age of 84.

Allen Evans was a tireless champion of Shropshire Cricket, the Wem Sports and Social Association and Wem Cricket Club – where he had a seven-decade association. His goddaughter Hazel Ruscoe said: “Allen was a true Wemian and family man. He loved his hometown and was passionate about sport. “He spent his life working for local sport and his legacy is clear to see in the town. He was a true champion of Shropshire sport.” Evans grew up in Leek Steet, Wem, and attended Wem Primary School and Wem Secondary Modern School. After school, he joined Wem timber merchants Isherwoods to start a five-year cabinet-maker apprenticeship. He worked building houses in Wem and later joined North Shrop-

Evans was passionate about sport and at the age of 11 he joined Wem Cricket Club, the start of a 70-year association with the club. He was a prolific wicketkeeper and batsman. When his days behind the stumps came to an end, he joined the club’s committee and served as chairman for 14 years, later becoming president. He led fundraising campaigns and was instrumental in the club’s move from the Castlefields Ground to the Kynaston Ground in Soulton Road. He also helped to shape county cricket when he joined the Shropshire Cricket Board and the Shropshire County Cricket Association.

In 2011, he received a special award for his service to cricket when he received a Lifetime Achievement Oscar from the Shropshire Cricket Board. As part of the award, Evans and his wife Jessie enjoyed a special trip to Lord’s for lunch and a tour of the home of cricket. He was also a keen golfer and member of Hawkstone Park, winning many trophies, including the club’s prestigious Masters title when he was awarded the famous Hawkstone Park green jacket His golfing highlights included a hole-in-one and a trip to St Andrews to play in a national foursomes final. Evans played football for Wem and Rubery Owen, Prees. He was on Wem’s Powell Cup Charity Committee for many years and for 50 years, he served on the committee of Wem Sports & Social Club. For his contribution to sport, Allen was recognised by the town he loved when he was made an Honorary Townsman of Wem in 2006.

The end of an era for a Shropshire bowling league was celebrated in style. Mabel Finnigan founded the Telford Ladies Afternoon League more than 30 years ago – and has run it ever since as secretary. But she officially handed over the secretarial reins to Carol Faulkner at the league’s presentation lunch at the Sinclair Club in Ketley on Wednesday. “The afternoon went really well and was very well attended by 94 attendees,” said Faulkner, who bowls for Bowring. “A beautiful buffet was done by Mabel and her team of ladies and a raffle made £300. “Mabel was presented with some flowers for her work during her final season as secretary.” League chairperson Sybil Rhodes presented all the prizes, with

Chris Sayers, joint secretary of the Drayton league with husband Graham, confirmed: “Eddy Broad is standing down as chairman, treasurer Brian Allen is in his 80s and is standing down and we said we would do the secretary role for two years. “That two years is nearly up now and nobody has come forward to take up any of the roles and there will be an empty top table. “So the stark reality is that if clubs say no to joint administration at the AGM in January, the Market Drayton League will cease to exist.” Clubs in both leagues have been fully updated at recent meetings about a merger of sorts that will see both leagues retain a separate identity.

Shifnal strike to secure the derby spoils Two first-half goals ensured the derby bragging rights were with Shifnal Town as they heaped more misery on basement boys Market Drayton Town. Kane Lewis and Kyren Hamilton struck inside 31 minutes for Jamie Haynes’ Shifnal, who climbed to seventh in the Midland League Premier with a fine response to successive defeats. Richard Brown’s Drayton remain rock-bottom following the Friday night home defeat under the lights in the clubs’ fourth meeting of the season, following FA Cup and FA Trophy contests. The teams shared a win in the cups, while Shifnal also won the reverse league clash. Keanu Cooper helped create Lewis’ first on 14 minutes, which was finished via a deflection. Hamilton opened his account for Shifnal just after the half hour mark as his strike from the corner of the box found its way into the corner through a sea of bodies in front of almost 200 fans. The Greenfields hosts were unfortunate not to pull one back through Joel Jones, reacting to ex-Shifnal man Harvey Lewis striking a post, but the offside flag was raised. Ex-AFC Telford youngster Jeremy Abbey went closest for Shifnal of either side after the break, but his 18-yard drive came back off the upright. Elsewhere in the Midland League’s top flight, mid-table Whitchurch Alport fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat at high-flying Stourport Swifts. In Division One, AFC Bridgnorth climbed to 15th with an impressive 3-1 home comeback victory over Paget Rangers, who started the day in the top half. The hosts recovered from the worst possible start having fallen behind after two minutes at Crown Meadow. But Connor Parker found a fine equaliser from outside the box barely a minute later. Bridgnorth then led by the half-hour mark. Parker’s pass released Craig Knowles and he kept his cool to finish beyond the onrushing Paget goalkeeper. The second half was tight but Knowles bagged his second of the afternoon in the closing stages to put the contest to bed. The Meadow Men extended the gap between themselves and the relegation zone to five points. Shawbury United are one place and two points further back having taken a point from a 2-2 home draw against struggling Heath Hayes. Jeffrey Agyeman headed a second-half equaliser for Shawbury, who were behind at the break. James Tindall-Bennett had handed Shawbury a fourth-minute opener but Hayes struck back to lead at the break.
