TOWN IS TO GET A NEW NHS DENTIST Contract confirmed as council campaign proves successful
A new contract for the provision of NHS dental services has been awarded in Llandrindod Wells following a town council campaign.
The service will take over the former MyDentist premises in the town. Bosses say it will offer an expanded NHS dental service from this month. A Llandrindod Wells Town Council spokeswoman said: “Llandrindod Wells Town Council is delighted to see the appointment of an additional dentist within Llandrindod Wells. “This follows a campaign set up by the town council which instigated a community survey, pressure

She said: “Having worked towards securing 50 per cent of the funding for this position from the Welsh Government, I know that that it will make a vital difference to the people of Llandrindod.” Appointments are being offered to people who have received NHS dental services from the former MyDentist practice in Llandrindod Wells in the last two years.
They will be contacted by the practice to attend for an appointment. People in the Llandrindod Wells area who do not have an NHS dentist, and who have contacted the Powys Dental Helpline, will also receive an appointment. They are being asked not to contact the dental practice directly for appointments. Bosses said there is currently a waiting list for NHS dental services in the area. They said it will take some time to offer appointments to everyone on the current waiting list. People who live in Powys, or who are registered with a GP in the county, are being asked to call the Powys Dental Helpline on 01686 252808 if they need help in finding a dentist.
Four-day school week option is now ruled out Schools in Powys will not move to a four-day week to reduce costs, the county council has confirmed. To help support schools with the pressures they face due to increasing energy and inflationary costs, Powys County Council produced a financial management toolkit which included ideas on how to reduce costs. One of the potential options put forward in extreme cases was a
four-day school week with the fifth day moving to online learning. However, this option has now been removed by the council. Councillor Pete Roberts, cabinet member for a learning Powys, said the four-day school week proposal was the “most extreme” of the options in the financial toolkit. Welsh Government, who were not supportive of schools moving to a four-day week at this time. “This decision doesn’t mean the financial challenge has fundamentally improved, just that there is one fewer option on the table.” And Councillor Roberts added: “We will continue to support our schools and look at options to reduce their running costs which do not impact on our learners.”

Magical ingredients pull in crowds at farming showcase
Reindeer, Santa and fireworks were key ingredients in this year’s Royal Welsh Winter Fair. The reindeer, Simba and Thor, flew in from the North Pole to thrill the crowds at the event, along with Santa who returned to this year’s fair following the pandemic and was kept very busy with lots of visitors. The first day of one of Europe’s premier agricultural events was rounded off on Monday with a spectacular fireworks display and late night shopping. The two-day event looked to be continuing its resurgence after Covid as crowds packed in to enjoy the best of Welsh produce, a packed schedule of competitions, eye-catching displays, a relaxed shopping experience and some great food and drink. The World Cup was not far away from people’s thoughts and even the site’s well-known sculpture of a farmer and his sheep took to wearing a Welsh bucket hat. Providing a wonderful festive atmosphere at the event was a range of singers and entertainers including Katie Fairclough, The Welsh Whisperer, Llandrindod Wells’ Holly Richards and Lowri Evans.
