“Support traders in their hour of need” is the message to residents in Newport as local businesses look to bounce back after a raft of challenges.

With a rich history dating back to the 12th century and scores of independent businesses, many offering goods that can’t be found on the internet, Newport has plenty to offer to both locals and visitors alike. Local councillor Peter Scott said businesses had gone through a tough time due to the pandemic, cost-ofliving crisis and the closure of St Mary’s Street due to safety fears. But traders had shown resilience in the face of adversity and were now ready to thrive again, with the backing of the public. He said: “When people come to visit us they come back again and again. They are surprised at what a beautiful town we have. It’s been a challenging time for businesses, particularly in St Mary’s Street, and I would encourage everyone to go down there and support them.”
