Survey finds ‘overwhelming’ public support for better bus service in Market Drayton

Residents in Market Drayton fear being cut off from the rest of the county and are demanding better bus services.
A major survey has been carried out into bus services in the town – and the findings reveal a clear demand for action. Residents of Market Drayton are ‘overwhelmingly’ in favour of having better access to public transport, as they talk about being ‘marooned’ and ‘cut off’ from neighbouring towns and villages. It comes after members of Market Drayton Climate Action’s (MDCA) Transport Working Group ran a bus survey to document people’s experiences using public transport. Its purpose was to provide evidence of demand in the area, which saw nearly 200 people submit responses, calling for improvements to be made. Janey Manton, secretary to MDCE Transport Working Group said: “We don’t have enough public transport – the town is expanding, while the bus service is declining. People like the bus that goes around the town, but it needs to go to more places, it only serves a small part of the town.” The bus survey results means the group will pursue four key recommendations for change. They are: connecting Market Drayton to Whitchurch by bus; introducing evening services; re-organising the existing service to include more of the town and outlying villages; and providing a direct bus to Telford and Shrewsbury hospitals.
Adding a splash of colour to festive tree
Residents have been encouraged to choose the colour they would like their town’s Christmas tree to be over the festive period. The LED Christmas tree lights on the High Street in Market Drayton will be shining brightly for residents and visitors. Every evening this week, the LED tree will have a different colour and residents have been asked to vote for their favourite. From Monday the Christmas tree will be lit up in the most popular colour. Shops get dressed up to impress judge
It’s the most wonderful time of the year in Market Drayton, as shops and stores get ‘dressed up’ for the festive period. The Market Drayton Christmas shop window competition has now been launched – and all shops in the town have been encouraged to take part. All of the stores that are decorated with a Christmas theme will be automatically entered into the competition. The Mayor will be judging the shop windows from Monday. Flores Diem won the competition for last year’s display.

Festival sponsors jazz up charity coffers A jazz and blues event at Market Drayton’s Ginger & Spice Festival provided music to the ears – and money to the coffers – of two charities. Ticket sales at the event raised more than £2,000 thanks to the generosity of sponsors Dourish and Day Estate Agents which covered
the cost. The money has been split down the middle for Severn Hospice and St Mary’s Church, in Market Drayton and a cheque presentation was held in Market Drayton on Tuesday to mark the occasion. Each charity is getting £1,018. Ginger & Spice Festival director, Julia Roberts, said: “We were so
pleased to have Dourish and Day on board as a brand new sponsor for 2022, enabling us to donate all of the ticket sales monies to two very worthy organisations.” The next Ginger and Spice Festival will take place on and around September 30. More information at www.gingerandspicefestival.co.uk

The Met Office has issued a severe cold weather alert for England, as it warned plummeting temperatures could increase health risks to vulnerable people and disrupt deliveries. The level three, or amber, cold weather alert was issued at the beginning of the week and warns that temperatures were expected to turn colder from yesterday as air from the Arctic spreads across the country. Daytime temperatures are expected to be near or just above freezing. Nights will be ‘very cold’ with potentially severe frosts.
